Can a Viking forgive the woman who cheated him of his vengeance?

All Dráddor has to do is kill the Earl of Caithness, wed the man’s daughter, and vengeance would be his and the oath to his father would be fulfilled. But when he arrives at Caithness, the earl is already dead, poisoned by own wife. And when he finds the earl’s daughter, the Lady Xára, he find she’s unable to speak. Unwilling to be thwarted, Dráddor marries her anyway to claim the earl’s lands and title, knowing King Kenneth could not fault him for later casting her aside.

She must win Dráddor to her side before he discovers the secret that will destroy all. But the Saracen warrior, Niketas, has other plans. He needs the blood of two virgin half-immortals to win eternal life and the powers of the gods. Until the god Heimdallr, Xára’s true sire, makes it clear he has other plans for his beloved daughter…

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil…

In Ms. Xára’s case, she fits the speak no evil category, but she has certainly seen and heard plenty, particularly when it involves her step-uncle Néill and his spell-casting concubine, Magnhildur. After living for several years in a convent, coming back to her home in Lathairn is a shock for Xára. First, she finds out she has a younger sister who is destined to wed her depraved uncle, and then her father’s evil reign is suddenly brought to a tragic end by her mother’s own hand. As her mother lies dying from the same poison that killed her father, the lies surrounding Xára’s family begin to unfurl. To save her little sister from marriage to Néill, Xára devises a scheme of her own, but a surprise attack not only robs her of her ability to speak, it also leaves her shaken and terrified for their futures. Alas, there is much more for poor Xára to learn. Néill’s thirst for power goes deeper than she could imagine. Things are not what they seem and there are family secrets she has yet to discover, secrets that threaten to destroy everything she holds dear in the world, including her relationship with her new husband, Dráddør.

Hefnd Hamarr (Vengeance Hammer) is what Dráddør calls his mighty weapon. The prospect of quenching his thirst for revenge is so close he can nearly taste his enemy’s blood, but it seems the gods have other plans. The disappointment in learning that his rival, Arnfinn, had been poisoned by his wife is fast but fleeting. Even though he was ordered to marry Arnfinn’s first born and claim Lathairn and all it’s lands, he is pleasantly surprised when his intended turns out to be quite comely with nice “titties” and a lovely “puss”. But his approval of her outward appearance turns bitter sweet when he learns she can’t speak. However, if Dráddør thinks he’s inherited a fortune in lands and holdings plus a dumb and mute wife, he has another thing coming. While Lathairn’s value certainly isn’t questionable, its state of disrepair and filth leaves a lot to be desired. Dráddør certainly has his work cut out for him. Riddled with secrets, lies, and misgivings, it’s going to take one hell of a man with a crap load of patience to pick through the rubble and restore Lathairn to its previous glory, which includes righting the wrongs committed against his new bride and her remaining family.

Vengeance Hammer is book three in Ms. Carlo’s Viking Vengeance series, and it left me wanting to read books one and two. The story opens with an instant hook for me: barbarian storms the castle, then whisks the helpless maiden off for a night of passion in his bed. Well, not quite like that, but close enough. While many readers might be appalled by that notion, it’s Dráddør’s tenderness and compassion while carrying out the required actions to stake his claim on Lathairn that had me instantly falling in love. Even though Xára is dumb, she’s certainly not stupid and she quickly discovers that Dráddør is not the brute she expected him to be. Don’t get me wrong, he’s stubborn and bossy—as I imagine most Viking warriors were. Taking his new wife’s virginity in front of a room full of witnesses, then hanging the bloodied sheets out for proof of his claim seems pretty darned cold-hearted—I guess they did things a bit differently back in those days—but his tenderness and thoughtfulness throughout the ordeal is surprising not only me, but to Xára as well. He has a level of compassion that I imagine was rare for his kind and it sets him above others, making him a perfect hero for Lathairn and all its inhabitants.

Seems that kindness runs in the males of his family, for when his brothers and their wives show up, I see a similar pattern in them—lucky girls. The passion between Xára and Dráddør is undeniable. While some of his pet names for various parts of Xára’s body might make some readers cringe with distaste, I found them endearing because they were used with tangible respect. Dráddør falls for Xára quick and fierce, and it has him reeling. Even though lingering secrets and lies threaten their newfound affection for each other, Dráddør handles himself admirably and certainly earned my respect. The secondary characters add depth and excitement to the story, without overshadowing the main stars. Overall, Ms. Carlo has penned an exciting and romantic tale that stole my heart and left me dreaming about my own Viking warrior.

Fierce barbarians, cunning maidens, a little bit of magic and plenty of mayhem, what else can you ask for in a fierce tale of love, war and honor? Ms. Carlo balances it all in Vengeance Hammer. I enjoyed every moment from beginning to end and look forward to reading more from this skilled author.

Nerdy astronomy geek Marsha, M to her few friends, has never been anybody special. Orphaned as an infant and reluctantly raised by an overly-strict “aunt,” she’s not even sure who she is. M’s dream of someday escaping tiny Jewel, Indiana and making her mark in the world seems impossibly distant until hot new quarterback Rigel inexplicably befriends her. As Rigel turns his back on fawning cheerleaders to spend time with M, strange things start to happen: her acne clears up, her eyesight improves to the point she can ditch her thick glasses, and when they touch, sparks fly—literally! When M digs for a reason, she discovers deep secrets that will change her formerly humdrum life forever . . . and expose her to perils she never dreamed of. Yes, the middle of nowhere just got a lot more interesting!

Even after nine years as the class dork, I couldn’t quite squelch a fizzy little hope that this year would be different.” Thus begins Marsha’s sophomore year in high school, a year in which her life would change in ways that she never could have imagined.

Marsha is a kind-hearted astronomy geek who has two good friends but otherwise, she is shunned. She suffers from bad acne, wears thick glasses, and is very bright. This combination of characteristics would doom her chances for popularity in nearly any high school. The opening of this novel had me hooked immediately, and I was expecting a heart-warming coming of age story. I was not disappointed, but I also got so much more.

The school’s new quarterback, also a sophomore, is immediately attracted to Marsha, to the disgust and dismay of the cheerleaders. But again this isn’t a love story, although Rigel and Marsha are attracted to each other. This story has a great deal more depth and a real mystery to be solved. Rigel and Marsha need to work together against formidable odds to save not only the small town of Jewel, Indiana, but possibly the entire earth.

This is a fast-paced exciting story, but it is also one with a great deal of heart and the characters are very real. I felt as if I were walking into any small high school filled with teen angst, but what separates this novel from others are the deep secrets within Marsha’s past. She comes across knowledge that would cause most people, even those a good deal older, to panic, and she does have her fear-driven moments, but she also is able to handle difficult situations with amazing courage.

Readers who enjoy suspenseful fantasy and coming-of-age stories are sure to enjoy Starstruck. The author indicates that this is the first in a new series, and I, for one, hope that there are many more novels to come.

How do I handle negative criticism?

There are people who love my writing and rave over Painted Boots; there are people who might actually hate the story … and there are all kinds of opinions in between. The opinions I receive aren’t unusual. The same love/hate stuff follows everyone who put themselves in the public eye: actors, singers, writers, reporters, reality TV stars, bloggers—you name it. The best advice I have to offer is the approach that works for me: ignore criticism publicly, learn from it privately, and know the difference between a genuine critique and a person who can only feel better about themselves by tearing other people down.

Sometimes I’m a disgruntled movie-goer. Sometimes I’m appalled by what a singer might do for attention. There are many times when I simply have to turn the TV off. And sometimes, though I know I chose to read a given book, I don’t agree with what I’ve read. Maybe I despise the ending. Maybe I vehemently believe the author cheated her/his characters. I’ll shut the book and wonder why everyone raves over a heroine I see as weak and stereotyped. I’ve been known to cheer on a character the majority hates.

So when people express negative opinions about my characters or my story in general, I respect their right to say it. I read what they post, think about why they feel the way they do, and move on. The result is always good – I learn a new perspective, I see my own work in a new way and I become a stronger writer.

But … when people post negative or rude comments under the guise of ‘anonymous’ I discount what they say completely. Anonymous, negative statements (and yes, I’ve received one or two) tend to be cruel or completely obnoxious. These types of posts aren’t criticism – they are a personal attack – and say more about the poster than they do me (or whoever).

A few months ago I read an anonymous post on a friend’s Goodreads page that was so mean I felt sorry for the people said-anonymous-poster lives with. My friend took the high road and ignored it, but admitted privately that when he first read it, the words stung.

When I choose to post criticism on others’ work (which I will only do on WIPs, not published books) I offer my thoughts as kindly as I can; I’m hoping to help the author clarify their intent. But when commenting publicly on a finished product I always follow the rule my mother taught me: If you can’t say something in a nice way, don’t say anything at all.

Somehow the scattered fellowship of wizards must locate their missing members, break the old enchantments, and bring peace to the Choinese in time for Douglas to pass his firemaster exam and marry Myrn Manstar.

Pyromancer Flarman Flowerstalk takes one look at the tea leaves in the bottom of his cup one morning and promptly disappears. Then his apprentice, Journeyman Pyromancer Douglas Brightglade is kidnapped by the Stone Men, who were enchanted centuries ago by an ancient Geomancer. And finally, magician Wong discovers his homeland of Choin is suffering from a major political upheaval surrounding the struggle for the emperor’s throne. Suddenly the fellowship of wizards is faced with three different catastrophes. Will they be able to solve the mysteries?

Once again, Don Callander has crafted a fantastically imaginative and exciting story about wizards and their world. This is the third in the ‘Mancer Series, and I have really enjoyed each one. Callander gives an introduction in each so that readers who begin in the middle of the series are quickly updated and each book stands alone with a totally complete and finished plot.

I think one of the greatest strengths in Geomancer is the way in which Callander is able to juggle a varied panoply of characters and locations so that the reader never feels lost or unsettled. The descriptions of the Stone Men’s village is unique and complex, as are the Stone Men themselves. An ancient and evil Geomancer turned the entire village into stone and understandably, after living this way for centuries, they want the enchantment lifted. They also don’t trust wizards, again for a very good reason, so Douglas must use all his abilities to work with them. I like Douglas, especially because of his understanding and compassion for the Stone Men.

There are many different supporting characters in this novel, and they are each brought to life with amazing depth and clarity. Many different species are active in the story, as well as magical objects with personalities and abilities of their own. I love Bronze Owl, Doorknocker and official greeter, who is also able to move to different locations and instruct the ornate “Ostrich-Hume Pen, which had been busily writing to his dictation all morning.”

Lovers of fantasy are certain to find the wizard’s world in Geomancer to be spellbinding and exciting, filled with action and adventures in a variety of different richly described settings.

Storyteller Judy Ann Davis weaves her award-winning tales to make her readers laugh, maybe cry, but always able to relate to the unique characters and the dilemmas they encounter.

There’s more to thriving in a small town than might first meet the eye.

Just when I thought I knew where Ms. Davis is headed with certain plots she steers it into entirely new directions. The appeal of this book lays in her ability to transform even the most ordinary experience into something special.

“Up On the Roof” is a good introduction to this collection. David’s father, Henry, keeps climbing onto the roof in order to have conversations with God. The problem is that Henry isn’t as young as he used to be, and David and the rest of the family are genuinely concerned about the patriarch’s safety during these conversations. The characterization in this tale is wonderful, especially when it comes to how the younger family members relate to one another as they attempt to figure out how to get Henry back on solid land. While I found the conclusion a little hard to believe due to how quickly it came together and how certain characters reacted to it, the final scene did provide a sense of closure for questions that were asked earlier on.

There were some stories that I had trouble understanding. “The Amulet” begins with a young woman on a road trip with her boyfriend that makes a stopover at a flea market. I liked Greta’s flashbacks to her childhood, but I had trouble connecting those experiences to her current life. She seems conflicted about the parts of her heritage that she wants to hold onto, and I never knew how her mind would change on the topic from one scene to the next. The premise was intriguing, but the ending never tied up all of the loose ends from earlier on in the plot. This pattern was repeated in several other tales and it is the reason why I gave this anthology a 3 star rating.

In “Holiday Bonding” Raymond Harper and his wife Celeste are celebrating their first Christmas with their four young adult children. Raymond wants to recapture the magic and beloved traditions of previous holidays, but coordinating the schedules of so many adults is difficult. It isn’t easy for anyone to readjust interpersonal boundaries as children become adults, and Ms. Davis captures the growing pains of this experience quite well. I especially enjoyed the conversations between Raymond and Celeste in the first scene because of how much it reveals about their relationship now that they are empty nesters.

Up on the Roof and Other Short Stories is a solid collection of contemporary and historical mainstream fiction. It’s a good choice for anyone who likes reading about life in small, rural communities as Ms. Davis’ snapshots of their subcultures are quite well done.

Even the unthinkable can sound reasonable when you mix alcohol, sexual frustration, and a bachelorette party—especially a bold proposition. Now in the light of day, Naomi’s hung over, horrified, and anxious about facing this complicated man again and the unexplored feelings their encounter brought with it.

She called, he came, but Ryan didn’t exactly conquer. Is it too much to hope that Naomi will give him a do-over? She can’t avoid him, not when he’s walking her down the aisle. But who ever heard of a bridesmaid getting cold feet?

Naomi has been single for over six months and has sex on the brain. Getting slightly drunk at her friend’s Bachelorette party, she boldly announces her desire to get laid, and is hurriedly carted back to her duplex by a friend. Alone again, she calls one of the groomsmen – Ryan – and gives him a sexy ultimatum, if you want me, come get me. What follows is a wonderful mixture of hilarious and sexy start of their relationship.

Naomi is a great heroine, smart and relatable, I loved her declaration in the opening pages of wanting to get laid – because really, who hasn’t said something similar when half-drunk at a girls night out? Ryan is a sweet and eager hero, someone who I’d enjoy to come running when I called late at night. I really enjoyed how neither character is perfect, they’re funny, sweet and all the more interesting for their flaws, but they also so clearly work seamlessly together. The set up of the plot isn’t anything blindingly new – a friend’s wedding, a long standing crush on one of the groomsmen and alcohol fuelled bravery – but I still felt as if anything could happen. I was a little disappointed that Naomi lost her gumption a bit the following day, but it did make Ryan work for it, which was sweet. The author still managed to make a very traditional, well-known story seem fresh and different, and that little bit of humour added in between Naomi and Ryan had me laughing in places.

This is somewhat raunchy, caught between a traditional romance and a deliciously explicit, steamy novel. All the scenes are written tastefully, with a light touch and I found them sexy without pushing the envelope. Almost from the beginning I was rooting for Naomi and Ryan to hook up and found the outcome of their spicy relationship to be very satisfying.

Laurann Dohner has done it again! She did a fantastic job with this book. I loved it so much, could not put it down. Despite the promise to myself to take it slow and savor the story, I ended up reading it straight through instead. By the ending my hands were cramping from clutching my kindle so tightly, and I’d ran an emotional gamut from reading this wonderful love story.

Laurann Dohner changes up the series by putting a unique spin on this book. The story ushers in some new and intriguing characters, and catches up with some familiar ones as well. True and Jeanie are both fairly new characters, though we have had a few glimpses of True in a couple of the other books. Ms. Dohner plumbed the depth of each character in the story, though I didn’t always like what was revealed. Some of them acted different from what I’ve come to expect. Some were mean, while others shone brightly. For one thing, I am now dying to find out more about Darkness and his mysterious past. While I’m somewhat mad at Tim and Trey. This book had a complex plot, with an intricate tangle of betrayal, suspicions, and passion. Above all else, it told of a wonderful love story that was sweet and honest. This story was very dramatic with rich characters and plenty of suspense. The drama thickened as the plot unfolded and a web of deceit was uncovered. It had a clever villain who seemed to stay one step ahead of the game. The why of that was shocking enough to make this reader gasp. It was an ironic twist, in a way. As usual, Ms. Dohner had all kinds of things happening in this book. Yet, the main focus always remained with the romance.

I couldn’t help falling in love with True and Jeanie. I feel that their story is one of the more compelling ones in the New Species series. Jeanie was a good person who walked into something that was a bad situation. But she stayed and tried to help everyone. She fell in love with True, and that love was nearly her own undoing. I will say that some of the earlier scenes in the book were very hard for me to read. I could almost feel Jeanie’s frustration when nobody believed her story. Yes, she was definitely one of the strongest heroines in the series. Then there was True. What can I say except that he was the most perfect hero. *sigh* He was so steadfast in his support of his woman. Even when he thought she was guilty of betraying him, he was still drawn to her. Their relationship was sweeter than most in this series, though it was just as hot. Dohner never lets her readers down with the love scenes. In case you are wondering, they were scorching hot. Now, the villain always loses the game in the end. I’ll just say that it was very satisfying, and I loved how this game ended. Yet, I am left wondering about something. Was Ms. Dohner setting up her next book ? Maybe so.

What kind of magic is this ? True is the eleventh book in a series that just keeps getting better with each new story. Laurann Dohner simply must possess some kind of wicked writing magic. This book was perfectly written. There’s no way to critique perfection. Overall, I look at this book as some of her finest work yet. I loved it. New Species fans will be crazy for it. I predict that new readers will jump on the Laurann Dohner bandwagon. True gets a great big recommendation for everyone.

Their paths cross on a rainy morning when Spencer can’t take his eyes off of a bubbly, dark-haired beauty with an unconscious urge to dance.

What do you do when you have to choose between your calling or true love?

Maizy Owen is a kindergarten teacher in the small town of Divine, Texas. She is fulfilling her calling to shape the young minds of the future. Despite a recent break up from her fiance, Maizy is living a pretty good life. Her brother, one of the heros from the previous book in the series, Lucy’s Revenge, is getting married and is happy. Her new sister-in-law rocks and her nephew is blossoming. And then she meets the three bears.

Cody, Heath and Spencer’s are brothers we met three books ago in Tiny Dancer. Thrown together during their time in foster care, the men formed an unbreakable bond. Did I mention that they are super tall, muscled and sexy? Yeah. When they see a woman performing a mesmerizing belly dance on Halloween, the guys are done for. Hook, line, sinker. But before they can meet her she’s gone from the club. Believing they will find her the men set their plan in action and ready themselves for the love of their life. Thankfully it doesn’t take much to convince their belly dancer she’s the one when they finally meet her by chance.

These three men instantly grabbed my attention when they first graced the page and as a fan of the series I was eager to hear their story. I really enjoyed how the author made the story focus on how strong true love can be if you let it. Heather Rainier again proves what an amazing author she is with her 16th novel in her Divine Creek Series. Ms. Rainier is able to keep her tales fresh and make her fans salivate for more while keeping us in touch with the series favorites. Oh and she’s really great at making her fans hate a character so much we swear at our e-readers.

Again, I applaud the authors recent addition to her ever expanding series and personally I hope to never see it end!

For Gemma Green’s first time, things should have been straightforward. Find your subject, hold their gaze and push a thought into their head to save them from future disaster – Aversion complete. A pretty simple process given that the subject was to have no recollection of the experience. But Russ Tanner doesn’t seem to want to forget. In fact the more she tries to avoid him, the more he pushes to get to know her. Gemma knows she has a problem but is she facing the side effects of a failed Aversion or has the school’s tennis champ really fallen for her?

Would you want to have someone watching over you who could foretell when one of your actions would get you into major trouble and that person could prevent you from doing something disastrous in a way that you would be totally unaware of? Gemma Green is one such person and she does this by pushing a thought into the person’s head, a thought which that person never remembers.

I really liked the premise of this novel. The thought that there are averters out in the world stopping people from taking actions which would destroy the path that they are meant to follow is a most intriguing idea. Obviously the averters have to remain secret or else people would engage in all sorts of reckless behavior without worrying about the consequences. Gemma has been trained her whole life to deal with the fact that she is an averter. But when her first Aversion seems to have failed because Russ Tanner doesn’t want to forget, Gemma’s life suddenly becomes much more complicated and dangerous.

I like Gemma a lot and her character seems very real and well-developed. She works hard to stay as invisible as she can at her high school, never drawing attention to herself, living the life of a loner. But she has her father and together they have a good life even if they do move every four years. Nevertheless, Gemma is also a normal teenage girl and the life she is forced to lead isn’t at all easy for her.

The plot is riddled with mysteries and just as Gemma solves one mystery, several others pop up in its place. Gemma finds help in very unlikely places and I was totally captivated by this story. It is not only a great fantasy adventure, but it also raises a number of extremely interesting philosophical dilemmas.

Fantasy readers are sure to enjoy this story filled with rich overtones, and I look forward to reading the next in the series.
