“So, it’s – what – like magic?”

No, according to Pen’s uncle, the Rite is not magic at all. But, if it’s not magic, then how could Pen push the school bully into a pond while he was really studying alone in the library?
When Pen’s family realise he has the Rite, he is sent to live with his Uncle Napier, who can help him control his ability.

But Napier has other duties. He is the Rendelf, in charge of the Rite in the UK, and he has gathered many enemies over the years…
…enemies who would be delighted to use Pen against him.

He says we never had a proper honeymoon.

So, instead, he’s giving me… a prepper honeymoon?

Who knew billionaire preppers were a thing?

I guess I’m about to find out.

Julia Kent’s New York Times bestselling romantic comedy series continues in Shopping for a CEO’s Honeymoon as Andrew and Amanda settle in to married life… and so much more.

I am eating a piece of grilled white asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, drizzled with melted manchego cheese and coated in crushed pistachio, when my friend and co-worker Josh ruins my culinary orgasm by bringing up my honeymoon.

More specifically, my lack of a honeymoon.

And all I can do is grunt.

“I’m just saying,” he says with a sigh as he waves his bacon-wrapped, goat-cheese-stuffed date around on its toothpick like he’s the conductor of the Boston Pops doing a tapas bar gig, “you married a freaking billionaire. You deserve a honeymoon.”

“It’s not about what Amanda does or doesn’t deserve,” Carol insists on my behalf. As I chew, I give her a look that either says thank you or is so indecent, I need a cigarette and a fan, because damn, that asparagus is good.

“What is it about?”

“It’s about what they want. I mean, my God, Josh! Andrew bought her an estate as a wedding gift. I think he’s got all the good-husband bases covered.”

“Pfft. That? He’s a billionaire! That’s to be expected.”

“You’re pooh-poohing my husband’s gift to me? An estate in Weston, Massachusetts? It’s one of the most expensive zip codes in the country,” I say, parroting his affect.

“Hello? Billionaire? For him, that’s like buying a cheap condo behind the railroad tracks in Clinton. Declan bought Shannon an entire coffee chain.”

“This isn’t a competition,” I say, alarm making my pinot noir taste like vinegar.

“And he managed to give her a nice honeymoon in Hawaii.”

I lean in. “Define nice. Because those two still refuse to talk about their honeymoon.”

From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men’s room toilet (and he isn’t a billionaire). She lives in New England with her husband and three children in a household where the toilet seat is never, ever, down.

Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Memories

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!  This week is all about Bookish Memories  I have many wonderful memories about books, so let’s get to the list!

One of my very earliest memories of reading is sitting on my mom’s lap in a rocking chair as a child.  She would have a stack of books on one side, and she read them, she’d set them on the other side.  When we made it through the stack, she’d start over again!

I’ll always remember going to the library as a child.  I’d go to the back section and check out the old, often overlooked books of fairy tales and myths from places all over the world.  I loved the feel and smell of the old pages.

Reading Little House in the Big Woods is another cherished memory.  My second grade class read it and did all sorts of activities associated with the book, like making butter and candy in the snow.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and it sparked my interest in history and historical fiction.

As I’ve mentioned before, my favorite book is Beauty by Robin McKinley.  I read it for the first time when I was in fourth grade.  I was browsing the school’s library (again seeking out old books of fairy tales) when the librarian recommended Beauty.  I loved it and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Book on Brown Leaves

I’ll also never forget the first time I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.  I was in seventh grade at the time and we read The Hobbit  and The Fellowship of the Ring as part of our class work.  I fell in love with Middle Earth and all the characters and adventure to be had.  My parents gave me the series for Christmas that year so I could finish it on my own.

Discovering Edgar Allan Poe was also memorable.  I had to memorize a poem for a Language Arts class, and as I was looking through my dad’s books, I stumbled upon his collection of Poe’s poetry.  The first one I read was Annabelle Lee.  It was so haunting and passionate!  It remains my favorite poem.  (Of course I then went on to discover Poe’s short stories!)

Interview with the Vampire was the first book with vampires I ever read.  My husband (who was my boyfriend at the time), was reading it.  We were in high school and he’d borrowed it from his older sister.  He had the book out one afternoon, and I started reading over his shoulder  It wasn’t long before I had the book.  I went on to read the rest of the series and to seek out more books with vampires.

Of course one of the great things about books is sharing them with others.  I’ve had a lot of fun discussing books with my husband and my friends.  However, the best memories are of sharing books with my children.  Snuggling with my kids under a blanket on the couch reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas is one memory that comes to mind as we’ll be heading into the Christmas season soon.

I had a lot of fun making this list and reminiscing! What is your favorite bookish memory?

Death comes, and misery follows. As a man in his early twenties, Leon never genuinely contemplated what would happen after his death. Like those before him, he never understood the truth of our universe. After his sudden demise, the terrorizing reality of a mysterious dystopian afterlife begins crushing him as it has those prior. Men have started enslaving and killing each other to sate their greed while enigmatic creatures oppress the masses. Only a select few have shown the courage that is needed to challenge their supremacy.

Through this eclipsing darkness, there is hope. But will that hope prove to be enough to save this turbulent cosmos? The revelations of advanced science, magic, human savagery, and even our gods will be showcased. Both in a new light and disturbing darkness, will the verities of Earth and Afterworld give him a greater understanding of our universe; or in turn, begin to break him as they have done to so many before?

What would you do if you crossed over into the next life and got the shock of your life? This is exactly what happened to a young man, Leon. A tragic accident leads him to a world where evil beings do great harm to others. Leon witnesses much violence on his grand adventure, but he meets good beings as well, including historical figures.

Is there hope for those lost in this world? Not many have the courage to make it so; however, Leon is special. He makes friends and enemies in his plan to make a difference. He will discover himself and his own strengths and weaknesses.

Things move quickly in this story, and the suspense is high. The stakes are high. Readers will feel a lot while turning these pages, and they will think about things as well. If you like intricate, unusual tales of fantasy and other worlds, why not give this book a try?

The Devil’s Necromancer by Alexa Piper

Lionel, a necromancer and consultant for the Brunswick Police Department, wants nothing to do with immortals. Specifically, he wants nothing to do with Lucifer, who shows up on his doorstep one day with a ridiculous proposal. Lucifer, also known as the Devil, wants Lionel to be his pretend boyfriend. Except the pretend part is something the Devil doesn’t really seem to care for.

Lucifer has read enough romance novels to know that a good dose of forced proximity might be just the thing to get the stubborn necromancer he desires into his bed. The Devil’s plans are soon complicated when Lionel proves more uncooperative and oblivious to love than Lucifer could ever anticipate.

While the Devil wants to claim Lionel, all Lionel wants is to get away from Lucifer. Meanwhile, magic users are being murdered in the city. Lionel cannot escape the implications of those murders for long, and the case soon takes a different turn. Will Lionel be able to escape the Devil’s thrall, or will the necromancer fall for the immortal seducer?

Enter a world where magic users, including necromancers, help out the Police Department; where you can find cursed Hellpoodles, and Lucifer prefers to be called Lucy.

The blurb offered me so much, and I was looking forward to reading this. This was good but could have been so much better! Unfortunately for me – and I’ll probably be in the minority here – but it just never felt like it delivered. Lionel is full of snark, but you never get a reason why… unless it’s the old “I really like him, but I don’t” which seems to be the theme of this book. There is a warning about DubCon and I would take note! The mystery side is an afterthought, taking up very little page space.

Neither of the main characters was memorable for me. I much preferred Trony and Tiamet and would like to see more of them in the future. They, plus others, helped move this story along. Christine was fun to read about as she was not prepared to take any sh*t from Lionel.

I’ve read others by this author and enjoyed them more. I feel like this will be a book to split opinions. I think you will either fall in love with it or just find it meh. All in all, a quick, okay read.

A DAY WITH DANNI – Behind the scenes

These past few months weren’t typical for me, but have since become my norm. I’m involved in a film production promoting women in aviation. This also means I’m in another state in Australia and am away for my kids. It’s really hard being so far from them.

Each morning I get ready and head out to the air field for a day of flying. I arrive at the airfield, log into work via my laptop, complete 1-2 meetings and then go for an hours flight. I come back, complete more work, have lunch, fly again, come back in and have a brief break. Up next I do some filming (I get filmed discussing my flight and thoughts about it), then log into work and have another meeting or so. I try and get 2-3 flights done each day. Then rinse and repeat the next day. In between this routine I mark student assignments and complete a bit of research for my own studies.

My work ethic has been instilled in me from an early age from my mum. She worked, studied and brought up two kids on her own. I am now trying to share the same lessons with my kids.
My kids don’t seem to understand what all the fuss is about. My brother, their uncle is a pilot, and so are a lot of my friends. Flying seems common, the norm for my kids. Whereas back when I was their age and even into my early 20’s it was an amazing past time/occupation. Not everyone did it. It was viewed as some form of elitism. I suppose it’s a generational thing and seeing my mum bring up two kids on her own, work and study wasn’t the norm yet it seemed that way for me and my brother.

The film production I’m involved in shares the message that there are some fantastic women in aviation. We aim to normalise the industry and bring awareness to some fantastic back stories of hard times and self struggles yet still achieve our aviation dreams. The little girl in my story “You Can Do Anything” dreams of also one day becoming a pilot, among many other things! “It is great to be a girl in the world of today, I can be anything and I still get to play.”

The most inspiring people in the world started with a dream that a lot of other people thought wasn’t possible. By setting their minds to something and working hard, they proved that their dream was achievable. Dream big and be what you want to be.

Last night I had a dream of all the things I could be:
a pilot, a lawyer, and a captain at sea.
In my dream was my brother, he was there too.
He was a dancer, a nurse and a vet at the zoo.
My mum told me, when Great-Grandma was small,
boys only did boys things and girls couldn’t at all.

About the Author: Danni Maynard grew up dreaming big and wanting to break the stereotype of what women were ‘meant’ to be. She is a lecturer in aviation, a pilot and is working towards her doctorate in, you guessed it, aviation. Danni is still dreaming and has turned her attention to encouraging young minds of today to dream along with her. She is a strong believer in supporting kids to pursue their passions no matter what the world tells them they can or cannot do.

She brings this passion to her daily life as a mother of three amazing children who are constantly reminded that they are allowed to imagine a life that encompasses fantasies, aspirations and ambitions. This attitude to life was shaped by her mum, who is a powerful and supportive role model in Danni’s life and sculpted her to be an independent and strong-minded thinker. Danni also dedicates time to Women in Aviation – Australian Chapter to educate and inspire young girls about the fascinating industry that is aviation and the opportunities it presents to women.

He came to her in a dream, but he’s more like a nightmare in tight jeans, and she wants a taste.

Rachael isn’t good at magic, and she’s not versed in life, but this witch wants to lay her hands on the sexy vampire who’s come to her in her dreams. Can she have her Christmas wish — the vampire?

Gavin wants the witch, but he doesn’t believe he’s worthy of her. Part of him wants to devour her magic and save himself, but what if being saved doesn’t involve dying?

Anything is possible with a little Christmas magic.

All he wanted was to be sexy enough to draw her to him and gain her attention. As he adjusted his jacket, a scroll appeared on his dresser.
He unrolled the page and read the distinctive scrawl.

Gavin,

You are in a unique position to fulfill Rachael’s desires. You are also in the position to destroy her. She has the magic to restore your humanity. The choice and her life are in your hands.

Go to her, but choose wisely.

Give her the Christmas she deserves and have a Merry Christmas yourself. You deserve it.

Santa

Well, drat. The old coot had shown up and found a way to push him toward Rachael. He didn’t need much encouragement, but still. Santa had given him a nudge.

He already liked what he saw in her from her dreams, and she had a sweet demeanor. In person, she might be dull, but he had a plan. He’d make her fall for him through his vampire allure, then devour her.

He smoothed his shirt, then ignored the scroll. He might be attracted to her, but he was still a messed-up son of a gun. He wasn’t nice.

He killed for sport.

He ate when the mood struck.

He’d lost his humanity.

Besides, he didn’t believe in Christmas. Santa be damned. Christmas was just another day.

Nothing special and certainly not the time to find redemption.

Not at all.

He hated Christmas, but Santa and Krampus wanted him to give the witch a night to remember.

Fine.

He’d go.
