Alyssa never could have imagined that her first accomplishment after high school in a small Mississippi town would be traveling to a land she’d never heard of and ascending to its throne as the new Elf Queen. But when her long-lost father, the Elf King, comes back for his daughter, that is exactly the future that he brings.

With the help of her cousin, her father, and others, Alyssa carefully finds her way as an outsider through the intricacies of elf society. Along the way she meets fairies, unicorns, and other beasts that she’d grown up believing were only to be found in myths. At the same time, Alyssa encounters a mysterious cult whose entire purpose seems to be the prevention, by any means necessary, of her taking the throne. After an arrow that misses its mark and a message written in blood fail to warn her away, Alyssa finds herself in a fight for her own life and for those of her companions.

That magic exists in the realm of the elves is obvious to Alyssa from the beginning. Its use, though, is forbidden by centuries of elf tradition. When the Cult of the Wyrm finally makes its move, Alyssa must decide whether to risk banishment from her own birthright in order to wield the destructive forces as a weapon against those who would see her dead.

Join Alyssa as the sassy Southern girl enters the land of her father’s birth and deals with a stern priesthood, a stuck-up royal trio, and, of all things, a crush, as she comes of age in Kiirajanna.

 Summer Then, Summer Now

When I was a kid, I just loved summer. It was a time of freedom. Freedom from school, freedom from heavy winter clothes, freedom to read just for fun, with no book report looming. On the last day of school summer stretched ahead like an endless horizon.Ann&Cats

I would wake up and think, “What should I do today? Who should I play with?” I lived in a neighborhood with plenty of kids. One was and still is my Best Friend Forever, though back then we would simply say, “best friend.” Others kids met certain interests. I would play “horses” with one friend. Hunt for rocks and arrowheads with another. Play softball with a group. Sometimes we would just flop on the ground and watch the clouds, imagining them to be everything from horses to giants. Or we’d curl up on a front porch and read. Reading for pleasure was always part of summer.

While I had some chores (clean my room, help my mother hang laundry, iron my father’s handkerchiefs), most of the summer days were for pure fun. I would ride my bike, roller skate, climb trees, make crafts, put on a “show,” for neighbors (and charge a nickel!), build a fort. I could walk down to the end of the street and watch boats in the harbor, or catch a few small crabs to sell to the fisherman and take my money to the little bait store that also sold candy and soda and get myself a treat.

When I was bit older I could walk to the town beach every day to swim, sunbathe, play cards and listen to the radio with my friends. I would stop at the library and pick out books to read. One year a friend and I got into a competition to see who could read the most Black Stallion books (in order of publication!).

My older brother might take me for a ride in the convertible he was working on or the new motorcycle he just bought.

But once I grew up, summer lost a bit of its glow for me. For one thing, I had to work through the summer. There were days when I would look out at a clear blue sky and just ache to be outdoors. But, of course, I had to stay inside and stick to my tasks.

The heat of summer began to bother me. I couldn’t just run through a sprinkler or go to the beach on a hot day. I had to go to and from a job, or do yard work, or raise my daughter—or write books. Now I grumble when the temperature gets to be over 75! And lying in the sun to get a tan lost its appeal once the news was out about the kinds of harm it could do to one’s skin. But reading for pleasure is still a summer delight. Although I read all year, there’s still something special about sitting in the shade with a book and reading just for the pure enjoyment of it.

So even though summer is no longer the carefree season it once was for me, a warm day with a soft breeze, the sound of birds chirping in the back yard, memories of the cherished days of my childhood, and reading a special book still make summer a wonderful season.

Geoff’s anxiety has indeed returned, but not because of Cami. His kidnappers want $2.5 million for his release, but will anyone believe the prankster has been taken hostage before it’s too late?

Sometimes what happens after two people find their happily ever after isn’t as straightforward as it might first appear to be.

I enjoyed reading the descriptions of what it feels like to have anxiety. This is a difficult emotion to fully capture in fiction because so many of its symptoms can easily be mistaken for other issues. Tying them all together takes some talent. Ms. Warner pulled it off so well that I briefly wondered if some of the scenes were based on real-life events. They felt incredibly realistic and panic-inducing.

Geoff and Cami’s voices were so similar that at times I had trouble telling them apart. Couples who have been together for a while sometimes mimic each other’s mannerisms, but I found it hard to believe that any two people would have nearly identical thought patterns. While their personalities are eventually described in greater detail, it was done through telling instead of showing the reader exactly how Cami and Geoff are different from one another. I particularly would have liked to see more concrete examples of Cami’s love of organization and Geoff’s strong urge to be in the spotlight.

The humour in this tale caught me off guard. I was expecting to like it based on how intrigued I was by the blurb, but I never thought I’d find as many things to chuckle over during the course of it as I did. Kidnappings are serious business, of course, but the way other characters react to the disappearance of a man known for pulling outlandish pranks was well worth my time.

“G” as in Gone is a solid mystery that I’d recommend to anyone in the mood for something modern and funny.

FRANK IS IN TROUBLE.

Not the “best call the wife” sort of trouble. Not the “how on earth did I manage that?” sort of trouble. Not even the “I hope to God no-one ever finds out about this” sort. Frank would kill for that kind of trouble right now. But it’s not Frank who’s making that call.

I remember reading somewhere that cigarette and candy automats were in place by the 1930’s, and by the time World War II rolled around, vending machines were raking in $600 million, an astronomical amount considering that most of the candy they stocked sold for a penny. discount sildenafil In today’s world of careless lifestyles and hectic jobs have not only increased cialis 40 mg stress in people but it has also been seen affecting the sexual health of men. Someone else is. And that someone else is Trouble like Frank has never known.

And now, Frank is discovering that in a survival situation, hope can be as much of a liability as despair…

Pain is a signal that something has gone wrong in a body, but that isn’t the only purpose it serves.

The blurb barely scratches the surface of what this story is about, but in this case that’s a good thing. Not knowing exactly what to expect when I started reading made it even scarier once I realized what was happening to the narrator. It’s difficult to go into specifics without giving away spoilers, but this is definitely something that belongs in the horror genre.

I would have liked to see a little more time spent developing the final scene. It felt slightly abrupt to me based on how much time was spent earlier on in the plot wrestling with whether or not the narrator will get what he wants. The pacing was well-done throughout this piece, but when it ended I felt like I’d been dropped over the side of a cliff. A certain amount of dread works well in this sub-genre, but Lifeline would have easily earned a much higher rating if it had provided a few more details about the last jaw-dropping paragraph.

The fast-paced, thrilling plot lead me to finishing this tale in one sitting. By the end of the second scene I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next because the author had already shocked me with certain twists. I’ve read one other book by Mr. Power so far, and it’s interesting to see how his writing style evolves from one set of characters to the next. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more from him in the future!

Lifeline wallows in the dark, sinister side of the horror genre. This is a good choice for anyone who likes to be scared by things that actually happen.

Clocking in for what she assumes is going to be a normal night at her job at the Jamesburg jail Lilah’s got no clue that she’s about to meet the bear of her dreams.

I enjoyed this roundabout story that takes the present, introduces a crisis , and ends up solving a past mystery all while telling the story of two people falling in love.

Jamesburg is an odd place and I think that’s part of its charm. This time around there are were-unicorns and were-Pomeranians. But they are only secondary characters. The main characters are a were-raccoon with a story and a were-bear with an even darker background. How could I not read this novel?

I like how Ms. Red seems to be able to blend various elements in her stories. There’s comedy, both light and dark, silliness, sex, dark paranormal villains, romance and a zombie with a crush. The villain is kind of two-fold which was interesting because there are times that I think one isn’t a true villain but a victim. There was something the full villain said that made me question the heroine but whatever it might have been was never realized. I had a lot of possibilities rummaging around my brain but they were all for naught. The author didn’t do anything with that cryptic comment. I couldn’t be too disappointed though because what she did do was pretty fascinating in and of itself.

Bear With Me is a standalone story. It starts off with the mayor and his wife so a reader can still find out what’s going on with them since the first book but unlike the second book, Erick and Izzy don’t play a role in the final showdown. They are just there in the beginning to break the ice for this newest tale in the town. This current novel follows Lilah and Rex exclusively. Well, the villain has his POV time too.

Another carryover character is Jenga and Atlas, the zombie bear. Even though Jenga started out bad, he’s actually turning into an endearing, eccentric and fascinating character and he’s a great asset to this series. A reader gets to see a bit more of his character growth and it lends itself nicely to the telling of this tale.

A major factor that I greatly appreciate about Ms. Red’s style of writing is her balance between dark conflict and light humor. This novel could have really been dark and depressing because certainly the villain was a nasty bit of business but the author stops just short of it and injects some comic relief, a hero to the rescue and a heroine who isn’t shy about defending herself and those she cares for. It’s because of the lightness and comedic bent that I keep reading these stories. It has the drama and suspense to appeal to romantic suspense readers, it has the sexy escapades to appeal to erotic romance readers, and it has the silly quips, unique observations about Jamestown’s residents and adorable personality quirks of the main protagonists that keeps me coming back for more. It’s just plain fun.

Atlas has more onscreen time in this tale and the effect is hilarious. He actually helps the hero and heroine save the day but I’m willing to bet readers have NEVER seen the kind of comeuppance that gets doled out to the villain in Bear With Me . I laughed and giggled. Ms Red has a devious and highly entertaining mind.

There are other aspects of the book that I wasn’t clear on, and those are the pesky Edgewood brothers. I sort of understand their purpose in the beginning of the book but I am still confused as to their true motivation and target of their ire. What they’re doing makes no sense and I didn’t feel it was explained well enough for me to accept their presence in this story. That being said, the author made it very clear that they were not nice people and in fact were losers. But angry, petty and jealous bears are trouble no matter which way you look at it. That was their function in the book and in that, they were effective.

There are other people that populate the story that provide emotional insights and motivation for Lilah and Rex and played valuable roles in the conflict. Leena was my favorite.

Bear With Me is a really good tale with lots of diabolical twists and a wonderful romance. It has surprises, sexy encounters, silly humor, a bit of action and suspense and a well-rounded and sentimental wrap up that’s as beautiful a happy ever after as one could wish. I had fun reading this novel and give it a good recommend.

Summertime Livin’ by Brenda Whiteside

BrendaWhiteside_picSummertime and the livin’ is…hectic! When you live on a family farm, there’s no time for easy livin’ in the summer. We grow a variety of crops to feed ourselves, and we grow cucumbers to make awesome pickles and relish which are popular at the farmers’ markets.

I’m the jack-of-all-trades and the main killer of weeds on Tortuga Flats Farm. I really hate weeds. Harvesting sometimes falls on my list of chores, especially certain crops no one else cares that much about such as green beans and peas. But once in a while, I’m requested in the cucumber rows. It’s a little disconcerting with all the buzzing, but my son told me if I just ignore the bees, they’ll ignore me. Still…I do my best not to disturb too many of them. Imagine a steady buzzing drone and you’ll have some idea of how many bees there are to ignore. The cucumbers came slowly at the beginning of summer and now they’re manic. Thank you, bees.

The monsoons are lasting longer than normal this year, which means the weeds are thriving. For a weed-hater it’s pure torture to walk around the fields and crops and see so many. But at some point – like now – I have to put my blinders on. There are too many other chores and I could never keep up with them anyway. I only weed around the vegetables that are particularly bothered by weeds (onions, potatoes and a couple of ground vine plants).

One morning this summer, I was treated to a rare weather phenomenon for here – fog. I think we’ve only had a foggy farm one other time in the three years we’ve been here. Fog fascinates me for some unknown reason. The urge to walk into the cloud to see if there’s something waiting pulls at me. A romantic notion because I know the only thing waiting is mud. We’ve had so much rain. Sorry, I took the romance right out of that. And romance is what I’m all about!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Brenda spends most of her time writing stories of discovery and love. The rest of her time is spent tending vegetables on the small family farm she shares with her husband, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Together, they’ve embraced an age-old lifestyle that has been mostly lost in the United States – multiple generations living under one roof, who share the workload, follow their individual dreams and reap the benefits of combined talents.

After trying her hand at a couple of genres, she’s settled on romantic suspense. She’s found all good stories involve complicated human relationships. And if you add murder to the mix, the novel makes for good entertainment. She’s also found no matter a person’s age, a new discovery is right around every corner. Whether humorous or serious, straight contemporary or suspense, all her books revolve around those two facts.

Summer is my favorite season. I love seeing the trees with leaves again (even if it kills my allergies). I love having the windows wide open (even if bugs think I’m inviting them in). I love wearing my flip flops every day (heck, I’ll wear them until my toes start to get frostbite).

But one of my favoritest things about this time of year is the food. Strawberries are in stores year-round, but the local ones available only in the summer months are a special kind of heavenly. There’s also corn on the cob, and potato salad, and ice-cold watermelon.

And let’s not forget the Official Sandwich of Summer: the BLT.

I love pretty much anything with bacon on it, but when you add lush juicy RED tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes, together with heaping amounts of mayo — (Did I just swoon? I did, didn’t I? Please tell me I didn’t drop my sandwich.)

Everything tastes better when you eat it outdoors (except Brussels sprouts — they never taste good). There’s something about fresh air and food cooked over an open flame that awakens the taste buds, and they can’t seem to get enough of grilled steak. Burgers. S’mores, and more s’mores. I can even forget what goes into a hot dog when it’s sizzling to charred perfection on the grill.

Ahh, summer food. What could possibly be better?

Well, how about a summer fling with a hunky chef next door to the place where you’re dogsitting? Cowboys work just as hard in the hot months, but under the broiling sun, if you’re lucky, some of them will rip off their shirts and you get to drool over those hard, sweaty muscles! I mean, is there a better place to ogle tough alpha males than on a ranch?

I also love summer because it reminds me of some of he most romantic moments in my life—walking along the beach with my late husband, letting the waters of the Gulf of Mexico wash over our bare feet. Or sitting on a dune beneath clear moonlight, drinking more of that sweet tea and counting the stars.

Summer is a time for barbecues, and of course Texas is a leader there, too. Smoked brisket, juicy ribs, corn roasted on the grill…mmm, mmm, mmm. All washed down with ice cold beer.

In my neck of the woods it’s also a good time to hang out late in the day at Luckenbach, right down the road from me, where Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson sang in those long ago years. Now on any afternoon you can sip a Lone Star beer and listen to that day’s performers in the Pickers Circle. Kick back and let the music just wash over you.

Summer is a time for love, for happy memories, for renewal of life and love. Is it any wonder that I love it so much?

perf5.000x8.000.inddFletcher “Mustang” Call is a dedicated SEAL and a committed Dom. The one thing he isn’t is relationship material. A tragedy in his past killed his desire for more than a good time on leave and a little D/s play. Until April Coe walked into his life, a woman unlike any he’s known. Problem is, she’s as vanilla as they come.

April was warned about Mustang, a man as wild and free as his call sign, so she doesn’t expect him to stick around for long. That’s okay, she’ll enjoy the great sex while she can. At least, she thought it was great. When she senses her sexy bronco is holding back, she has to decide whether to ride the mustang a little harder or set him free.
