Sixteen-year-old Andrea Cavanaugh is elated when Josh, a bright-eyed piano prodigy, becomes her first boyfriend. But the closer she gets to him, the more she realizes that he’s not the boy she first fell for. In its poignancy and emotional darkness, Forgiven are the Starry-Eyed takes you deep into the delicate and devastating web of shame that spirals from the depths of dating violence when dreamy teenage love turns dark. Andrea must find not only an escape, but a belief that she is even worthy of freedom.

Love isn’t supposed to hurt.

I appreciated the way the author showed the audience the many warning signs of an abusive relationship through multiple examples in the storyline itself. This was so much more effective than sharing a list or having another character spout them off once Andrea was more deeply involved with Josh. It also gave the audience a chance to think for themselves, especially when it came to the small moments of discomfort the main character felt on her first date that can so easily be brushed off.

There were some pacing issues in the beginning that I found distracting. What made them even more noticeable was that one scene from a faster-paced section was included out of chronological order early on. This was the only thing I wish had been written differently about this tale. Everything else about it was so accurate, interesting, and sympathetic that I wish every teenager would read it before they jump into the dating pool for the first time.

The ending was perfect. I often wondered how Ms. Miller was planning to resolve everything, especially since this was a fairly short novel and there were still so many loose ends to tie up by the time I got to the last ten pages or so. It was delightful to see where she went with the plot at that point. It was satisfying but also left room for a sequel if she ever decides to write one. I, for one, would love to know what happened to Andrea next!

Forgiven Are the Starry-Eyed was a timely, educational read that I’d recommend to teen and adult readers alike.

Tandy Blakemore spends her days running her New England ice cream parlor, single-parenting her teenage son, and trying to keep her head above financial water. No easy feat when the shop’s machinery is aging and her son is thinking about college. Tandy hasn’t had a day off in a decade and wonders if she’ll ever be able to live a worry-free life.

Engineer Deacon Withers is on an enforced vacation in the tiny seaside town of Beacher’s Cove. Overworked, stressed, and lonely, he walks into Tandy’s shop for a midday ice cream cone and gets embroiled in helping her fix a broken piece of equipment.
Can the budding friendship that follows lead to something everlasting?

I couldn’t stop giggling at the dialogue. Tandy and Deacon both had distinctive speech patterns that not only made it a breeze to identify who they were but also interacted with each other beautifully. Both of them were excellent at saying exactly what was on their minds even if it wasn’t always necessarily what would be the most diplomatic response. No, this isn’t to say that they were thoughtless or anything like that They simply knew what they wanted and weren’t afraid to express their wishes straightforwardly and without any pretense.

The chemistry between Deacon and Tandy was fantastic. I had a wonderful time figuring out just how much they had in common, especially since they seemed to be polar opposites at first glance due to where they lived and what sort of work they each did. The more I realized how many similarities they shared and how nicely they complemented each other, the more I wanted them to end up together. They truly did seem to be a great match.

While this was a minor criticism in the scheme of things, it would have been nice to have more foreshadowing, especially when it came to Deacon’s long term plans for his life. There were a couple of plot twists regarding this topic that could have been developed a bit more clearly. I wondered if something like them might happen, but it would have been helpful to have a gentle nudge in that direction before the plot picked up speed.

Speaking as someone who used to work in an ice cream shop, I loved the descriptions of what that sort of job is like. Ms. Jaeger captured the hectic but also unpredictable pace of it perfectly. Those rare quiet nights in that business can’t be predicted ahead of time anymore than one could know in advance that a crucial piece of equipment was about to break down at the worst possible time. The only thing better than reading about the ups and downs of that business was getting a reminder of what it’s like to run around all afternoon and evening making milkshakes, sundaes, and more. By the end of the night, anyone who works in a place like that will be smeared in just about every kind of ice cream they sell. It’s sort of funny! While all of this was a small part of the plot, it really spoke to me.

This is part of the One Scoop or Two series. It can be read as a standalone work.

Anyone who is in the mood for something lighthearted should give Vanilla with a Twist a shot.

What would I tell a new author?

So, you’ve decided to become an author. Well, first and foremost, congratulations! Welcome aboard, and I am happy to see that you want to make a life out of your creativity. That is a wonderful and beautiful thing, and I wish you nothing but the best of luck upon entering this world. May your successes be great, and may your reviews only be the kindest of kind words.

That being said, here comes the part where I say, “head’s up!”

Nothing should ever stop you from doing what you love, and if that’s writing, then you write. What you should be aware of, however, is that what you’re embarking on is a long, hard road. Sometimes you will hear stories of someone who gets a worldwide bestseller right out of the gate, and if you’re one of them, well good on you! Odds are, however, you won’t be. Writing is a constant uphill battle of working on projects, putting your blood, sweat and tears into something you love, and then putting it out there for the world to tear apart should they decide to notice you at all. Sometimes they will love you, sometimes they will hate you, and much of the time they will feel cruel and indifferent. You will see books of dubious quality become worldwide bestsellers while you struggle to get friends and family to review your work on Amazon. It is a long, hard road, but it is the one you’ve chosen.

And it is at times like this that I look to the great and immortal words of Peter Quincy Taggart when I say, “Never give up, never surrender.” Just because the road is long and hard doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile. Writing is what you love to do, and what you’re meant to do, and no matter what gets thrown in your way, keep going! Keep building up your skills, your network of contacts, your resources that you can call upon when you have a new project. Keep putting out works, self-publish if that’s the route you want to go, or keep contacting publishers and agents if that’s the route you choose. Keep reminding yourself that this is your dream, and never forget that. It’s a long, hard road, and it will be tempting at times to give up when you face rejection after rejection. I’ve been there. We’ve all been there. It’s just the name of the game. But if you can feel writing in your soul, if you’ve got words that need to get out and must be shared with the world, then you don’t give up.

So, those are my warnings and my suggestions on how to deal with those warnings. Whatever you do, keep writing, keep going, and I shall wish you nothing but the best of luck in your venture.

Though here are some parting tips I couldn’t work into my main ramblings:

– Get plenty of sleep, you will value it.
– Invest in a comfortable chair to write in, your back and neck will thank you.
– Eat healthy, but eat comfortably.
– Learn when to trust and not to trust your spell check.
– Get an editor or beta reader, you will value it.
– Study up on how to write a good query letter.
– Be excellent to each other.
– And if you feel like going outside where other people might be while we’re still living under the specter of COVID-19, please wear a mask! This is a part of being excellent to each other.

For nearly sixty years, Bennytown has been America’s most exciting family theme park destination. Under the watchful eye of cultural icon Benny the Bunny, the park has entertained generations of children with its friendly atmosphere and technologically innovative rides, acting as a beacon of joy and wonder, where magic is real and dreams come true.

Bennytown once saved sixteen-year-old Noel Hallstrom’s life, and to repay it, Noel has applied for a summer job. Though the work is messy and the hours are bad, Noel is happy to be a part of the Bennytown family, until he sees the darkness beneath the surface. Strange, mechanized mascots walk the park perimeter. Elegantly dressed cultists in wooden Benny masks lurk in the darkness. Spirits of the many who’ve died in the park roam freely, and every night the park transforms into a dark dimension where madness reigns and monsters prowl.

Noel is about to find out more about Bennytown than he ever wanted to know, and that its darkness might have designs on him.

EXCERPTS (Please choose only ONE to use with your post):

Excerpt One:

“I believe in Bennytown,” Adam sniffled.

You weren’t supposed to cry at Bennytown, since it was a magical place where dreams come true. Bennytown was a themed wonderland of rides, shows, and fantastical worlds that let you escape from real life.

His parents and commercials repeated that to him on a regular basis, so it had to be the truth.

It didn’t feel really magical right now, though.

Adam sat on the curb in Happy Hollow, whimpering and wiping away tears. Bits of vanilla ice cream and chocolate smeared his chin. He wanted to kick Shawn for ruining everything. Mommy and Daddy always took Shawn’s side and barely listened to their other son. Even when Adam was right.

He wasn’t supposed to cry, but he did anyway.

“I believe in Bennytown,” he repeated.

Repeating the phrase helped ease the pain a little. The words had a power he found comforting, like saying he believed in Santa or the Easter Bunny. Unlike any of those mythical figures, these words had extra power because Bennytown was real.

About the Author Matt Carter has used his lifelong love for writing, history and the bizarre to bring to life novels like Almost Infamous: A Supervillain Novel, Pinnacle City: A Superhero Noir, and the Prospero Chronicles young adult horror series (all co-authored with Fiona J.R. Titchenell). Bennytown,is his first solo horror novel.

He is represented by Fran Black of Literary Counsel and lives in the usually sunny town of San Gabriel, CA with his wife, their pet king snake Mica, and the myriad of strange fictional characters and worlds that live in his head.

Writing Quirks

One of my writing quirks is that I talk to my characters and test out bits of dialog as I write. I even try out the hand motions and facial expressions that would work best with the banter. When my husband strolls by my writing area, which could be the couch with my laptop, he lifts his eyebrows and chuckles, but after thirty-five years, he’s used to me talking to myself and doesn’t interrupt.

Another quirk of mine is my coffee cups. Yep, I mean cups in the plural sense. I’m a little possessive over those decorative mugs and don’t want anyone else using them. I have different themed cups to put me in the mood for what I’m about to write. I use the Disney Haunted Mansion cup with its ghosts and ghoulies when I’m penning paranormal tales. For my stories set overseas, I reach for my Irish Claddagh cup as if I could channel those Irish characters a wee bit better. A holiday cup is in order for those Christmas stories where rich hot chocolate may be the drink of choice or hot apple cider with cinnamon sticks. I brewed Earl Gray tea in my beautiful mermaid mug as I wrote Mermaid Cove and Seaside Sundaes. However, my Rock Star Romances needed a music-themed cup. I chose The Guardian of the Galaxy mug that rocks with its vintage cassettes themed on the porcelain.

Why do I need so many mugs, you might ask? I’m convinced that I write better with the appropriate cup by my side.

80s rock star, Haley Rose, and her boyfriend went missing without a trace on October 31, 1988, and were eventually presumed dead. Three decades later, thirty-year-old, Rowan Beckett, recalls things only Haley Rose would know, and she can belt out songs in the same unique fashion. However, Rowan couldn’t be the missing rock star since Haley would now be in her fifties. Could Haley Rose have come back reincarnated as Rowan Beckett? Or is Rowan as delusional as her family suspects?

He didn’t know what was wrong with him. He never felt an attraction toward a woman as intensely as he reacted to Rowan just now. It was like the air had been sucked out of the room, and she was his lifeline. If he glanced away, he’d perish. No, that wasn’t entirely it. If he even blinked, he feared she’d cease to exist.

“Would you like a cup of coffee while you wait?” Katie thankfully spoke up, drawing Rowan’s concerned expression away from him and his weird-ass meltdown.

“Tea if you have it,” Rowan replied.

“Coming right up,” he blurted out a little too loudly, but it finally snapped him out of his bizarre trance. He hurried away or rather sprinted if truth be told. He needed to gather his composure, or Rowan would surely hightail it right out of here with the wrong impression of him, and he’d be out a manager. Worse, he would never have a chance to grasp why he wanted to know all there was to know about her.

Was it hot in here? Shit, he was sweating. Anxiety would do that to a man, but what was he so anxious about?

By the time he returned with the tea, he would have thought Katie and Rowan were friends catching up on old times. Rowan was telling Katie about how she carved giant pumpkins last Halloween to look like Frankenstein’s Monster and the other to look like Dracula.

“Earl Grey latte with a splash of vanilla,” he announced his arrival and slid the cup toward her on the bar.

Rowan’s face paled, and she stared at the cup as if he handed her some exotic concoction, she should be wary of sipping.

“Is something wrong?” he asked, concerned over her odd reaction toward a cup of tea.

She finally met his gaze, her big blue eyes wide and curious. “How did you know this was the way I take my tea?”

When Scarlet returns to town, she remembers all the hurts from her past, but she isn’t the same person she was then. Now, she is a strong, confident woman and she won’t let people push her around or make her feel inadequate.

Shane is charming and cocky but he is also vulnerable. His life hasn’t turned out the way he thought it would, but he has made the best of it. I liked Shane, but I did not like how he treated Scarlet in high school and I had to work to get past that. Shane is willing to make amends and work hard to show Scarlet he cares about her and won’t hurt her again. He wants her to know, he isn’t the same guy he used to be.

Overall, I liked Shane and Scarlet and I wanted them to have their happily ever after. They deserve to be happy and they are good together and for each other. “So, how is the public-school life at Eastview High?” I asked Ricardo. “Other than Chester beating your guys in sports.”

“Ya’ll just have better resources than us,” Ricardo said.

“How come we couldn’t just be good at what we do?”

“What! Anyway . . . Eastview is great, I guess, but we are dealing with some issues. It’s our senior year and I am just thinking about leaving this place.”

“Why would you want to leave?”

“Because I feel trapped in a box. Everywhere I go, I feel like a suspect.”

“A suspect, what makes you think that? You shouldn’t feel like that,” I said as my brow lifted from his response.

“Yeah, I know you wouldn’t understand because you go to this perfect private school and stay in this big, beautiful house.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I’m sorry. Just drop me off at the next block. I got it from there.”

I pulled to the curb and, as Ricardo got out of the car, he leaned against the closed door—with half his body leaning over the window—and said, “Wake up and find out who you really are.”

I squinted my eyes, “Okay.” I drove off. Why would he say such a thing to me?

When she later returns, older and wiser, she has no intention for rekindling the old relationship, but Ben has other ideas.

I found this interesting short story to be quite a different style of paranormal romance. Character-driven, this story was refreshingly different in a number of ways and I really enjoyed how there was a lesser focus on inner-pack politics. Often I feel werewolves plotlines can get too bogged down in politicking or fights for dominance that feel too well-worn. While there is a bit of this toward the end of the story – I was pleased primarily that this was a very small section of the plot but also that it was dealt with fairly quickly.

The story is told initially through Cassie’s perspective and then later with Ben specifically keeping some of the critical details vague so the reader doesn’t grasp fully what the situation is. While I understood the author’s subterfuge, I wasn’t keen on how the reader was left in the dark of such a crucial part of the core problem between Cassie and Ben for almost the first third of the story. I definitely felt that when I was enlightened as the reader to what really was happening – it was delicious and wonderfully naughty, I’m not sure the author should have left the big reveal quite so long into the story as they did.

I also never really understood fully why Cassie felt she couldn’t question exactly what Ben spoke about and who the other person was. I can fully appreciate Cassie felt betrayed and cheated, that she was hurt and angry – that made utter sense to me and I supported her initial reaction whole-heartedly. But to leave without discussing it, to cut him out of her life and turn her back on him and their potential future together just seemed way overboard to me, especially when pride or her hurt feelings appeared the only justification for it. Even when Cassie returned, to admit she was merely sticking her head in the sand and ignoring the whole issue felt juvenile and a bit silly to me.

The sex in the story, deliciously hot threesome sex, was well worth the wait and steamy enough it should satisfy readers who like their stories explicit and spicy. I was intrigued by the fact that Ben’s other relationship in many ways was a lot more solid – and settled – than his relationship with Cassie. I felt this in many ways strengthened the story and certainly made it seem fresh and different to me. Even though I personally enjoyed the difference I’m not sure other readers will be happy that essentially it is the “other” relationship that is solid, strong and secure – and not Ben and Cassie’s relationship, particularly when it’s meant to be them who are the hero and heroine characters. I enjoyed it, but I could see that many readers may feel that’s a bit odd.

Readers who like steamy, sexy paranormal stories with both M/M, M/F and ménage elements should find this a hot, sexy and interesting story.

Dating a tentacle monster is easy if you know the rules ahead of time!

The fabulous sense of humor expressed in the seven attention-grabbing words of the title were repeated over and over again in the storyline itself. This was especially evident in the dialogue. Multiple times I laughed out loud at the ways Helios and Peter expressed themselves. They had such a humorous way with words, especially when it came to Peter reassuring his anxious boyfriend that he wasn’t “dead, dying, or any form of the undead” after Helios worried what serious matter they were about to discuss.

No sooner did I finish my first round of laughter at their banter than I realized that Peter and Helios had fantastic chemistry. While there was a brief time in the beginning when I felt like I’d been dropped into the middle of their relationship without having enough information about their backstories, this feeling faded almost completely as I noticed all of the little and big ways in which their personalities suited each other perfectly.

I liked the way the storyline acknowledged Helios’ intersex identity without making it a big deal. He simply was who he was, and that was nice. What made it even more interesting is how it contrasted to how sex and gender were determined in Peter’s species. This is something that every reader should discover for themselves, but I was fascinated by it.

This is the tenth story in a series. It can be read as a standalone work.
