I cannot let it break me.

When sixteen-year-old Olivia Jacobs and her celebrity chef father are brutally attacked after his French Quarter restaurant opening, the shell-shocked Olivia finds herself on the run on the streets of New Orleans.

Who wants her dead? And why?

Lauren Clarks takes you on a whirlwind ride through the streets of New Orleans as Olivia tries to figure out what is going on in her life.   Ms. Clark did an amazing job capturing the confusion and angst of a teenager who has lost her way and who is trying to find out exactly who she is and where she stands. I really liked Olivia and cannot imagine what I would have done in her situation.

There were a few minor typos and a couple of times where Olivia referring to her dad by his first name that took me out of the story briefly, but I was able to get right back into the story.  Also, there were a few loose ends I would have liked to see cleared up, but these were minor issues (and probably only bothered me because I’m an editor in my day job!)

The characters are all well drawn and the mystery remained a puzzle up to the end. Good job, Ms. Clark! You had me wondering what was going to happen next all the way through the book and that’s not an easy feat to pull off. 4 stars.

The world is ending…or so it seems for junior tennis champion Ele O’Neill. How can she face life in a Montana ghost town after Seattle? No tennis courts, no friends, and she’s stuck in a falling down old theatre with a rotten little brother and parents who are acting like aliens. And something’s hiding in Ele’s room, watching her every move, but no one will listen to her.

All buy levitra visit that this will help you deal with erection problems caused by impotence, and it is fully capable of ‘reigniting the spark’ in an otherwise passionless relationship. Ligaments hold the bones together in right place to make joint whereas muscles tadalafil uk allows free movement of bones and soft tissue so the stringent imaging tests can miss the problem, always ask for further tests. You do not need viagra sales in uk to have the prescription done by a physician. Main difference lies among the three on how long they last. levitra online Steven Douglas is a nineteen-year-old cowboy with one little problem—he’s been dead for over one hundred fifty years. He’s supposed to protect the weird O’Neill family from unimaginable evil lurking in the theatre, but the modern world of tight jeans and outspoken young ladies—namely tall, blonde Ele O’Neill—has his full attention.

Though he seems kind of old-fashioned, Ele soon learns her ghost boyfriend Steven will brave her parents and hell itself to save her—and he’ll have to!

What happens after death can be even more memorable than what happened before it.

The mythology was handled nicely. I deeply enjoyed the opening scene that explained how Steven came to be the resident protective spirit of the theatre, and the world building only grew stronger from that point. It was satisfying to see so many of my questions about how everything worked be answered as Ele learned more about the history of her new hometown and got to know Steven better.

I would have preferred to see more time spent on character development in this book. The characters felt flat to me because of how often they behaved in truly odd ways without the narrator explaining why they were acting like that. To give one example, they regularly reacted to mildly irritating situations in much more dramatic ways than I’d generally expect from someone who was that particular age. This was true even for the characters who were children or teenagers and who I’d generally expect a certain amount of this behavior from. With more information about what was going on here, this could have either given the audience an in-depth look at their personalities or been used to explain the plot in even more depth.

The relationship between Ele and Eugene, her younger brother, showed a nice balance of various emotions. They bickered at times like all siblings do, but they also genuinely cared for one another. The loving bond between them was a real bright spot, especially once their living situation became more dangerous and they had to rely on each other to get through it.

I’d recommend Ghostly Acts to anyone who is in the mood for a spooky read this Halloween season.

Martin Hawley, wealthy, sexy San Francisco aristocrat wants Nita to help him find his kidnapped daughter. He’s well aware of Nita’s sensual dreams — he’s having them, too.

Nita is a long-standing reporter who has always been able to rely on her instincts. But lately she’s been having extremely intense dreams – hot flashes or daydreams, maybe even erotic nightmares. When Nita is called out of the blue by Martin Hawley she recognizes his voice instantly as her mysterious dream-lover. Only this isn’t a dream anymore, and Martin is looking into some very shady characters and Nita’s instincts for news is telling her that there’s far more to this story than she realized at first.

Told in the first person perspective I really enjoyed this short story. It felt a little to me like one of those “confessions of a …” stories but at a really fast pace. Nita’s fantasies are interspersed through the story and I was surprised that I actually enjoyed how craftily they were woven into the fabric of the story – to the point where at times I had difficulty working out what was dream (or fantasy) and what was reality. To my mind, Ms. Douglas is to be commended on some exemplary writing in that respect.

While not a paranormal tale in the traditional sense – there are no witches or shapeshifters here – there definitely felt to me a sense of Otherness that didn’t have a clear, logical explanation. The lines between which parts were real and which parts were fantasy remain blurred, and there isn’t a complete explanation to some of what occurs in the final scenes of the story. While I, personally, enjoyed this aspect to the story, feeling like it gave the whole tale an almost ghostly kind of feel, I do wonder if some readers might not enjoy the possibility that some questions remain not clearly answered.

Sexy and hot, I thought this was a good short story. With some paranormal-ish elements I feel that it’s a good read for a foggy night when the air is crisp and cool and just a little spooky. With a cracking pace, an interesting plot and some raunchy characters this ticks a lot of good boxes to my mind.

She’d loved Rory the way any naive girl could love a boy. Their relationship had been a sweet exploration for both of them. It hadn’t been complicated or difficult. It had been nice and easy and, for her, different. He had been her first in so many ways. Her first boyfriend. Her first lover. Her first heartbreak.

“Oh, Rory.” She whispered the words—not quite ready to let the world have the full volume of her voice. “Everything was so normal one moment, then the next you were dead and everyone blamed me.” The situation had been horrible all around, but one thing had made it even worse for her—knowing that someone had killed Rory and gotten away with it. She wanted to promise him that she’d find his real killer. But she didn’t make promises she couldn’t keep.

No tears came for Rory. Just as she’d had none for her grandparents when she’d visited their graves, minutes ago. The only thing she felt was regret that so many people’s lives had been shattered. Rory’s. His mother’s. Her grandparents’.

She tore her gaze away from the gravestone and the pain it represented.

A man stood no more than fifty feet from her. Tall and… Strong came to mind. It was more than the width of his shoulders; it was something about the set of them, as if he carried a heavy burden. His hair was so dark it rivaled the majesty of the night sky. But it was his eyes that enthralled her.

From that distance, she couldn’t see their color, but she could see kindness in them. Maybe it was the way they tilted down at the outer edges to lend a strange understanding to his expression. But then his lips moved, sliding upward, into a look of undiluted male satisfaction.

Her heart warmed under his appraisal, and the weirdest sensation came over her. It took a moment for her mind to match a word to the feeling—pleasure. She basked in the glory of his attention. Everything inside her wanted to go to him. Meet him. Talk to him. But the thought of speaking, of sharing that piece of herself that she’d kept hidden away for so many years… The mere thought terrified her. Her voice had been the only part of the past ten years that she’d retained control over.

All the warmth she got from being the center of his focus turned to ice. She wasn’t fit for public consumption. Fairson Reformatory for Women had fractured her as neatly as a broken bone. Now she needed time to heal. Oh, and that wasn’t even taking into consideration her status as a felon. As much as she wished it wasn’t true, people would judge her for the rest of her life on that murder conviction.

She couldn’t bear to look at him any longer, couldn’t bear to see him looking at her. Without any hesitation, she turned and walked away. Her legs felt gangly and awkward, as if they didn’t want to obey her bidding, but she forced her feet to keep moving.

Don’t look back. Don’t look at him. Don’t you dare.

She clenched her fists so tight they shook. A deep, throbbing ache formed in her palm where the Sister’s blade had sliced her. Exactly what she needed. She thrust her fingers wide open, stretching the injury, allowing the burning pain to vanquish all thoughts of the man.

One step and then another, she walked through the wrought-iron cemetery gates and headed out of town toward her next destination. The cold didn’t bother her. She’d planned to be outside all day and had made sure to purchase thick, warm clothing.

She followed the strip of road as it wound its way through the naked woods and low hills. Salt crunched beneath her insulated boots, the sound rhythmic and soothing. Occasionally a car passed, but for the most part she was alone. Alone was nice. Alone meant she was safe. Safe from the Sisters for the first time in ten years.

Some women spent years planning for their wedding. She’d spent the past decade planning for this day. The day she walked out of prison.

She used to fantasize about Grandma making all her favorite foods. The joy of sleeping in her own bed. But Grandma and Grandpa had died in a car accident on their way to visit her three years ago. And then she’d had to sell the house…

It’d taken a while, but she’d formulated a new idea. Visit the graves of everyone she’d lost, visit the Bear, then find a place to stay. She’d give herself one night—maybe two—to say a final goodbye to the life she used to lead and then move on. Move away from this place that represented so much pain.

Review by Snapdragon

Seeking adventure, shy Kitty Greenlee joins the Women’s Army Corps. In 1944 England, as secretarial support to the 8th Air Force, she encounters her dream man, a handsome lieutenant who only has eyes for her blonde friend. Uncomfortable around men, Kitty doesn’t think the handsome officer could want someone like her. Recovering from wounds, Ted Kruger wants to forget about losing his closest friends and have fun before returning to danger as a bomber navigator. When Ted recognizes Kitty as the girl who rescued him two years before, he must choose between dating the sexy blonde or pursuing quiet, serious-minded Kitty even though he knows he’s not nearly good enough for her. As the war gears up with the D-Day invasion, will Kitty and Ted risk their hearts as well as their lives?

Katherine’s story begins in 1942. Kitty is a young America woman, in wartime, visiting home to help her family and has set aside her own dreams and hopes. Yet, oddly, the war comes to her doorstep. She finds herself sailing east not long after.

It was a time when good and bad were black and white; and this is very apparent throughout. Kitty’s choices–like becoming a WAC–win reader’s approval immediately. So do her deliberate actions to fit in and contribute to the war effort. She’s determined to do her part.

Likewise, there’s a certain Allied fighter out there we get to know, who is so easily seen as a hero, and whose circumstances put us on the front-lines. We experience his courage as well as his nightmares. It is amazing to ‘see’ action through the eyes of a fighting man, but also to realize he is very human, also.

Family and friendships have a great impact on Kitty, as war has a dreadful and unpredictable impact.

Both characters win reader’s hearts and of course we have great hopes for them. However, nothing is a ‘given’ and no spoilers here!

This really is a wonderful glimpse at life in wartime. Characters and situations are entirely believable, and dialogue is wonderfully ‘conversation style.’ Whitaker has obviously done a huge amount of research into wartime, and what life was like in London during the war years. This is a wonderful romance that surely transcends the idea of a simple ‘war time’ romance.

Wonderfully descriptive words and phrases enhances the tone of every section, from the melancholy opener to the more dramatic scenes. Sensations and detailed settings always figure high; perhaps a trifle too high, on occasion, as description can slow the pace. However, those who love to read will relish some sections of this work.

This charming sequel to the beloved Sophie’s Squash is the perfect antidote to the back-to-school jitters. Sophie goes to school for the first time and has no interest in making friends that aren’t squash. Here’s a gently humorous read-aloud that proves that making friends, just like growing squash, takes time.

On Sophie’s first day of school, nobody appreciates her two best friends, Bonnie and Baxter, baby squash that she grew in her garden. Even worse, one classmate, Steven Green, won’t leave Sophie alone. He sits by her at circle time. He plays near her during recess. And he breathes on her while she paints. Steven just wants to be friends, but Sophie isn’t interested. Still, Sophie knows that her squash friends won’t last forever. Maybe it would be nice to have some human friends after all. . . .

Change is hard, especially for kids like Sophie.

As much as I liked Sophie, I liked Steven even more. This wasn’t an easy thing for me to admit since I’ve been a huge fan of Sophie’s creativity and strong self esteem ever since I first started reading about her. Steven was such a friendly and helpful child that I couldn’t help but to hope his persistence would pay off. I wanted nothing more than for these two characters to realize they had a lot in common and to start playing together every day at recess.

There was so much kindness woven into this tale. Sophie was different from her classmates for reasons that were never really explained. I loved the fact that those reasons were left to the reader’s imagination and that so many of the people in this girl’s life were willing to keep trying to help her until they hopefully figured something that would make sense to her. Whether she was an unusually quirky kid or her behaviors could be explained by a specific diagnosis didn’t ultimately matter. She was surrounded by deeply kind people who genuinely wanted to see her succeed either way.

The character development couldn’t have been better. Not only did Sophie learn some important lessons about how to make friends when your first attempts don’t work at all, her classmates learned equally valuable lessons from their experiences with her as well. While I can’t go into much detail about those scenes without giving away spoilers, I adored the fact that the characters were all on equal footing. Everyone had something to learn from someone else whether they originally realized it or not.

This is the sequel to Sophie’s Squash, and this series should be read in chronological order.

Sophie’s Squash Go to School is the perfect story to read for anyone who has ever struggled to make friends or adjust to a new routine.

Lady Regina Haversham’s thirtieth birthday was precisely one month away, which didn’t leave her much time to lose her virginity. Not that she wanted it lost. She wanted to know where it went and choose to whom she gave the dratted thing. Her coach came to a stop in front of the offices of the Bow Street Runners in central London, and she drew in a deep, unsteady breath. She pressed her hands deeper into the white fur muff that sat atop her lap and willed her pounding heart to slow its nervous beat. Christmastide was her favorite time of year. She was in high spirits, but she was also as nervous as a young lady making her debut on her way to see the queen. This particular outing had every chance to end in disaster.

She glanced out the window. She probably should have hired a hackney. It would have been less conspicuous than her uncle’s resplendent coach. There were already several on-lookers staring up at the black-lacquered conveyance with the Duke of Colchester’s seal on the side. She glanced down at her clothing. No doubt her ensemble was too elegant for marching into the offices of the best private investigative team in London, but she had no other clothing to wear, and this particular message was best delivered in person. She didn’t know Daffin Oakleaf’s home address, and she hardly thought a note to him for what she had in mind would be ap-propriate. No. Regardless of the stares, she had to see him in person.

“Lord Ravenport,” Lady Callahan intoned, closing her fan with an expert flick of the wrist. “Please, allow me to present my daughter Miss Sophie Kendall and her friends Miss Fiona Hartley and Miss Lily Hartley.”

Gray exchanged the expected pleasantries, then turned to Fiona. A halo of loose curls crowned her head, and she worried her plump bottom lip. Her pink gown exposed the long column of her neck and the curve of her shoulders; he could almost see her pulse beating wildly at the base of her throat.

His instincts screamed for him to run right out of the ballroom, and yet his boots remained rooted to the floor. Worse, before he knew what he was doing he’d asked her to dance.

“It would be my pleasure,” she stammered, taking his arm.

As he led her to the dance floor he questioned his own good judgment—and not for the first time that day. He’d witnessed Miss Hartley trip and tumble into the orchestra at the Millbrook ball. He’d been dancing with Helena at the time but had paused to help her up.

So much had changed since then.

He had no idea if Miss Hartley’s dance partner had been to blame for the incident or whether she was prone to falling, but just to be safe he tightened his hand on her waist. And they began moving to the music.

The first measure had barely played before she asked, “You received my letter?”

“I did,” he said noncommittally, twirling her beneath his raised arm.

When she faced him again, she looked him directly in the eye. “What do you think of my . . . offer?” she asked, her voice cracking on the final word.

He tamped down an unexpected pang of sympathy. “I think that we hardly know each other.”

“True, but that is easily rectified, is it not?” There it was—an unmistakable hint of desperation. And a sense of urgency that even her letter hadn’t conveyed.

“It is,” he conceded. “However, I suspect that the more we know each other, the less we’ll like each other.” Cynical but true in his experience. His parents certainly hadn’t grown fonder of each other. Neither had he and Helena.

She winced and looked away before regaining her composure. “Perhaps. But we needn’t like each other.”

Gray chuckled at that. “I never thought I’d meet some one more jaded than I.”

“So, you’ll consider my offer?” she pressed.

“I will not,” he said firmly. Under different circum stances, her fortune may have tempted him. But she was clearly intent on using him for her own purpose—and he suspected that she’d set her sights on him for reasons be yond his title. After all, there were half a dozen peers in attendance right now who’d leap at the chance to marry a young and unconventionally beautiful heiress.

But he was not one of them.

“It seems rather closedminded of you to dismiss me summarily,” she shot back, displaying a boldness that was borderline rude—and refreshing.

“If I said I’d consider your offer, I’d only be giving you false hope. Delaying the inevitable.”

“The inevitable rejection, you mean,” she clarified. “Yes.” He was still reeling from the sting of Helena’s
rebuff and wouldn’t wish anyone that sort of pain and humiliation.

“Please,” she begged. “I realize that it’s highly unusual for a woman to propose marriage—”

“It’s unheard of.”

“Surely you must be curious—as to why I did it.” She looked up at him, her shining blue eyes challenging him to deny the truth of her words.

Gray shrugged. “You have your reasons for making the offer; I have my reasons for declining it.”

“Give me the opportunity to explain,” she pleaded. “Just a quarter of an hour to make my case. If, after that, you remain unconvinced, I promise I shan’t mention it again.” He must be out of his damned mind to consider engaging in further discussion with Miss Hartley. The very last thing he needed was another conniving, selfserving female attempting to interfere with his life. He had opened his mouth to tell her so when someone bumped into his
back—hard.

Gray’s torso collided with Miss Hartley’s chest, and she stumbled two steps before he wrapped an arm around her slender waist, catching her just before she landed on the parquet floor. She gasped and clung to his jacket, her expression an odd mix of relief and mortification.

“Oh dear,” she breathed.

Their faces were so close he could see unexpected dark blue flecks in her irises and the individual freckles dotting her nose. “Forgive me,” he said.

“For what?”

For what indeed? Steering her into the collision? Gripping her waist too tightly? Or for staring at the swells of her breasts and having decidedly wicked thoughts while he should have been shielding her from further embarrassment? Ignoring her question, he asked, “Are you all right?”

“I am.” Her cheeks turned a charming shade of pink. She blew out a breath and shot him a shaky smile. “When it comes to dance floor mishaps, I confess I’ve survived much worse.”

Gray looked over his shoulder to see how the other couple fared, surprised to find Helena and her dance partner smiling apologetically.

And the truth struck him. For the last ten minutes, while he’d been dancing with Miss Hartley, he’d been completely, blissfully unaware of Helena and what she was doing. Even more remarkable, he’d forgotten that she was in the room. “Meet me in Hyde Park tomorrow,” he said to Miss Hartley, mentally cursing his own weakness. “I will listen to what you have to say, but don’t expect anything to change my mind.”

The corners of her mouth curled in a triumphant smile. “Thank you. All I ask is that you allow me the chance to explain the advantages of the arrangement—for us both.”

“Forgive me if I remain skeptical,” he drawled. “I’ll meet you near the footbridge. Three o’clock?”

“You won’t regret this,” she said earnestly, but the prick ling sensation between his shoulder blades suggested he would. In spite of her naïveté and candor—or maybe because of those things—Miss Hartley could prove far more dangerous to him than Helena had ever been.
