Review by PoppySheltered and cosseted, Sonnet Mendoza abided by her papi’s wishes her whole life: no boys, studies first and always. Now an ER nurse in a busy Chicago hospital, medical school is so close Sonnet can taste it. Just like her father always wanted. Just like she can taste all the things she wants—like Griffith Parker, the man of her dreams and her new housemate.
Working “graves” in a large hospital as a security guard while attending the police academy during the day doesn’t leave ex-Marine Griffith Parker any personal time, but after meeting the beautiful Sonnet Mendoza, business as usual is anything but. Sassy, smart…and interested in him, too? Except, she’s made an art of keeping her distance, and she’s been clear that her plans don’t include him. But the heart wants what the heart wants. His wants Sonnet. He’ll put it on the line to win her.
Great characters are the glue to this story. I absolutely adored both Sonnet and Griffith, and the author included a diverse and interesting group of secondary characters as well. I’m a huge fan of character driven stories, and this one definitely fits that criteria.
I find the gentle organic formula of YES is ideal for my vulval skin.” Dr David Nunns MD MRCOG – Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist at Nottingham City Hospital, Chairman of the Vulval Pain Society and council member of the British Society for the Study of Vulval Disease. Sonnet is living on her own for the first time. Her much loved father passed away the year before and she’s learning how to really stand on her own two feet. She’s beautiful. smart, intelligent and driven, but finding that maintaining a house on a nurse’s income isn’t that easy. She decides she needs a roommate.
Griffith is equally beautiful, smart, intelligent and driven. To be honest, my only complaint about the main characters was that they really didn’t have any flaws. From the moment Sonnet and Griffith met each other, Griffith was there for her whenever she needed him. He clearly wanted more than friendship, right from the start, but was incredibly patient with Sonnet’s reticence and put up with a lot of “no” from her.
This brings me to the sex portion of this story. It was honestly just about perfect. Unlike so many erotic romances, these two didn’t jump into bed immediately. There was a lot of fantasizing (and self-pleasuring) and then plenty of foreplay before they finally came together. I appreciated that the author let these two develop a deep relationship before they hit the sack. Once they did, they certainly scorched the sheets, but it was all appropriate to the plot.
To be honest, there really wasn’t a lot of conflict in the story, or much doubt these two both belonged together and would end up together. There’s a little at the end regarding a job change, but in my mind there was no way Griffith was going to give up that easily.
So, in a nutshell, this was simply a well written, sexy novel populated with three dimensional characters I cared a lot about. Did I wish I’d felt a little more anxiety about them? Sure. But in the end it didn’t matter that much. I just had a lot of fun reading about them, I completely enjoyed the cast of character (main and secondary) and I never once even thought of putting the book down. This author is very talented and I can’t wait to see what else she comes up with.

My mother would love this book and I would let my teenage daughter read it, if I had one. Basically this is a remake of one of my favorite Disney movies, Robin Hood. The Rebels of Cordovia was a creative twist taken after that fable. I was pleasantly surprised with the ending.
The Rebels of Cordovia was a well written story that I felt was fun and easy to read. I was interested from the beginning to the end and pleased with how smooth the plot flowed.
The heroine, Robin and the hero, Daniel , were truly adorable. Daniel brought a smile to my face every time he teased Robin. I felt mildly bad for Robin but it was really funny. She was good natured about his teasing and she had her turn to get him back. I loved watching their relationship bloom.
I do recommend reading The Rebels of Cordovia. At the end of The Rebels of Cordovia there is an excerpt for book two in The Rebel series, The Highwayman of Cordovia. Considering how much I enjoyed reading book one I’m going to have to read book two.

Eli’s head hasn’t been on straight after returning from duty as a soldier. Really struggling to follow the suggestions of his counselor, Eli notices Ben and mistakes him for a homeless man. Ben is an artist on a work visa from Tel Aviv, is struggling in his own way with all the changes so far from his native home. Eli and Ben slowly get to know each other, can they each be what the other needs?
This is an interesting and sweet story. At first I found it a little difficult to get my head around the style of the story – each chapter is divided into two sections, one showing the story from Ben’s perspective and the other from Eli’s. They’re both told in the third person, but the short chapters and changing between the two characters took a little getting used to. I did end up enjoying it, and indeed seeing things from both men’s perspectives helped me feel attached to each character in his own right, but it was certainly a different style of writing and I could understand if it wasn’t every readers’ cup of tea.
I have to admit to being a little surprised that most of the sex scenes had the bedroom door effectively closed. While I admit that Ben and Eli jumped into bed together fairly early on in their friendship, for an erotic romance I rather expected at least some level of detail to be made explicit in the sensual scenes. I admit that I appreciated a little more “getting-to-know-you” time in the story, but readers expecting and wanting lots of hot, steamy sex might be as surprised as I was when the story cuts to the next scene before the first “main event”, so to speak. But I also have to admit that having the sex be not quite as descriptive as I’m used to made the story feel slightly less passionate. I loved the connection and chemistry between Eli and Ben, and I absolutely felt that they become deeply in love and devoted to each other, but when I am reading an erotic romance I do feel there needs to be a certain level of explicitness.
I loved how complicated both Ben and Eli’s characters were. The author did an amazing job to my mind in revealing all the layers each man had and showing me as a reader just how good they were for each other. This came across to me as a deeply emotional read and I was thoroughly hooked and invested in both men, not just their romance together but also each as individual men, healing from their wounds and finding the next path they each wanted to take.
Readers looking for an emotional, strongly character-centric story should find this as breathtaking as I did. While the sex wasn’t as detailed as I would have liked, the connection and chemistry between Eli and Ben was undeniable and the strong plot and detailed characters made up for a lot of this.
Five Top Passions and a Few Guilty Pleasures by Sarah Black – Guest Blog
Long and Short Reviews welcomes Sarah Black, who is celebrating today’s release of War Paint.
These are the things I care most about in my everyday life. The list has changed over time, but today, here are the top five:
1. Local food, farmers’ markets, and co-ops. I am very passionate about local food, and support the farmers and the local co-ops to, hopefully, move us toward a more sustainable food system. I am extremely bothered by the condition of farm workers and farmers in America, and also don’t like the notion of the environmental impact of shipping food across the country in trucks. When I walk around my new city of Roanoke, I keep an eye out for small plots of land that can support an urban agriculture initiative. Roanoke has one of the most active local food movements in the country, with a daily farmers’ market I can walk to in ten minutes. But though I am passionate about these things, I also love cheese, and can justify cheese moving its slow way from France or Italy to my kitchen. Because, you know, cheese!
2. Dogs. I love my rescue dog. I love most dogs I come across and would bring them all home if I could. I think dogs can see right into our hearts, and that’s why they are so ready to love. I tend to be a bit shy, but my dog meets lots of people and brings me along. He’s been going into every bar with an open door we pass—not sure what that is about.
3. I love sewing by hand, and knitting, crochet, lace-making—the old ways that are slow and beautiful. With a good light and some beeswax to keep the thread from tangling, I can sew for hours. I crochet sometimes without making anything in particular, just moving meditation. I have a passion for old handmade quilts and antique lace, and will carry these beauties home and put them on my bed and love them until they are in pieces, as they were intended. I always use them. I think they want to be used.
4. I am becoming a minimalist since retirement. What I need to be happy is getting smaller and simpler with time, and now I live in a tiny downtown pad with my son, and we share a bathroom and my closet is also the linen closet. I can live in leggings and denim shirts; I wear red Keds almost every day. Some days I don’t even put on makeup. I’ve sold the car and we walk everywhere, which limits the amount of stuff we can haul home.
Over the top drinking, wellbeing issue, maladjustment is a portion of the reasons why men neglect to ordering levitra satisfy the requirements of his social life and might flounder amid ordinary course of every day schedule. This makes a cialis sales canada person incapable to please his partner. People mainly look generika cialis 20mg out for so many cures to it but that is completely wrong and not worth doing as there is no harm in talking about the negative and worrying or nagging about every little factor. Medical advancements have made a huge leap since continue reading for info cialis pills wholesale then. 5. I support Made in America, because it is good for our economy, and I’m worried about when we can no longer make our own socks and underwear. While I love the idea of sharing communication and art and other ideas with the rest of the world, there is an imbalance that seems to be getting worse. I love the local designers and makers, and see them as the tip of the spear, so to speak. But though I am being very minimalist with consumer goods on the whole, I still buy art and books with every penny I can get my hands on. The first money I ever made writing I spent on a Navajo rug, a little one made by one of my neighbors. It seems like a good way for money to travel, from a writer to an artist and a farmer, maybe back to a writer, if I can tell a good enough story.
Thanks for reading my new story! War Paint,/I> is out May 25 from Dreamspinner.

After her father’s death, Sheagan can’t bear to close his detective agency down. It’s the final connection to her now-gone family and so she’s determined to make it work. While not the most glamorous start to her new profession, Sheagan follows her boyfriend only to confirm through a bit of well-timed snooping that he’s cheating on her. Feeling there really is nothing left for her she throws herself into her new detective agency in order to try and get her life together. Can Sheagan make something out of her new career?
Fun and light-hearted I really enjoyed this happy story. I felt it was sortof a mixture between a chic-lit novel and a light-hearted mystery. Sheagan was a great character who appealed to me from the start. With a sweet kind of happiness and an optimism that shone through she was a modern but still interesting character that I could empathize with almost immediately. I thought the author did a great job balancing the storyline between being funny but not too over-the-top. While I, personally, was charmed by Sheagan’s slightly bumbling detecting ways – I’m not certain other readers will find the heroine’s actions as charming and humorous as I did. Readers wanting a thoroughly realistic detective/mystery style novel might need to loosen their expectations to really get the full appeal of this story. That said, I found the pacing of the story quick and smooth. I really enjoyed how each piece of the sequence led smoothly to the next and found following along with Sheagan as she uncovered each clue both addictive and interesting.
The romance aspect of the plot was a little slower, in my opinion, to gain momentum. While I did enjoy the chemistry and professional antagonism between Sheagan and Mac, at first I felt the mystery aspect of the storyline was stronger than their blossoming romance. As everything moved along, however, I was pleased that I found the chemistry between Sheagan and Mac both more believable and steamier. Sheagan and Mac’s romance had plenty of tension and antagonism that slowly blossomed into strong and deep feelings – their relationship took a while to really come together but in a sense that made it even more satisfying when they finally admitted the depth of their connection.
I found this story to have a good, strong mystery plotline and a slow-moving but still equally satisfying romance threaded well together. With a bunch of strong characters and a definite hint of humour I feel this story really had something that should appeal to everyone. With nothing overly explicit in the romance I feel this story should appeal to a very wide range of readers of all ages. I enjoyed the tone and voice of the author and would happily read more by them.

Mysteries can be found anywhere for people who pay close attention to their surroundings.
Basil Khoury, the main character in “The Last Voyage,” awoke in an unfamiliar room with no memory of how he’d ended up there. This was by far the least bizarre experience of his day, especially once he began meeting other people whose memories of his past contradicted his own. I did figure out what was going on very early on in the storyline. It would have been helpful to have fewer clues about where Basil was and why he had such a large gap in his memories.
There were some stories in this collection that I had a hard time following. “The Man from Nantucket” was one of them. It followed a detective around after he was hired by an angry father to find his daughter’s slimy ex-boyfriend who had abandoned her. The narrator’s decision to avoid using people’s names as much possible in this tale made it difficult to know who was who. I was also confused by how the ending was supposed to be related to everything that had happened before it. There simply weren’t enough clues for me to piece everything together.
In “Sacrifices,” members of a space colony had to decide how to react when Karen, one of their colleagues, was violently murdered. One of the things I liked the most about this mystery was how many layers it had. Nothing about Karen’s murder or the subsequent investigation into who was responsible for it was simple. Every hint had to be weighed carefully against the ones that came before it, and that made for a rewarding reading experience for me.
The Last Voyage and Other Stories is a good choice for fans of the mystery and science fiction genres alike.

This is a really cute story about a female P.I. named Lara Steele. A short description might sound like many other female private investigator stories but Lara’s clumsiness sets it apart from other books as do her friends. We never like to think we’ll be left alone. The other half of a partnership by ourselves. Alone to move forward; to manage all of the things we always thought there would be two of us to do. That’s sure the way Lara felt too. She never thought of herself being the one to have to carry on alone. But Lara’s spunky and her friends are interesting and her mother has moved in with her…whoops that last part isn’t necessarily a good part.
Since I have mentioned Lara Steele’s interesting friends twice already, you probably have the idea I think Linda Twiggs did an excellent job developing and describing her characters. I think I had as much fun with them as Lara Steele did. There is humor and wit written here and yet action and mystery too. I’m saying all of this about a 91 page book. What might have seemed like a novella felt like a complete, absorbing novel.
This is Book 1 in a series titled “Lara Steele series”. Book 2 is already out. My advice is that you read books 1 & 2 and hope for Book 3. It’s what I’m going to do.

He was freaked out enough for both of them that he even had that urge. “Hey, why don’t you tell me where your spare key is hidden, and I’ll go in and check the house for you first.”
There. That was a reasonable, not weird way to help.
She glanced his way, frowning. “If the alarm’s on, I need to turn it off, and I don’t want to sit out here. That’ll stress me out more than going in with you. I’m the only one who will be able to tell if anything’s been moved anyway.”
“Fair enough. Whatever makes you feel most comfortable is fine. But the minute something seems off or out of place, we bail and call the cops. Pinch my arm or something to signal me.”
Her frown deepened, a little line appearing between her brows, as if she couldn’t quite figure him out.
He couldn’t stop his smile. “What’s wrong? You look like you’re trying to figure out a really hard math problem.”
“I wouldn’t make this face for math. I’m good at math.” She let out a breath. “I guess I’m just trying to figure out why you’re being so nice to me. You don’t…know me.”
“Does that matter? If I knew you, would I not want to help you out?”
She stiffened. “What?”
He tilted his head. “I mean, are you secretly some evil comic-book villain who’s about to take over the city? Or do you have plans to kill me and store my body in your basement when we get inside?”
Her pinched expression flattened into something droll. “Austin houses don’t have basements.”
“Whew.” He wiped his brow. “I’m safe.”
She snorted and then covered her nose and mouth like she was surprised the sound had escaped. “You’re kind of strange, Wesley Garrett.”
He shrugged. “I get that a lot.” And that was a helluva lot better than what most people probably called him these days. “Now, are we going to bravely search your house like two TV detectives? Because I am so down for that right now. I need to bang open doors and yell, ‘Clear!’”
She laughed, the soft, husky sound filling the space between them and sending a pleasant ripple through him. The feeling was so unfamiliar that it stalled his breath for a second. How long had it been since he’d been around someone he could simply joke with and relax around? Someone who wasn’t looking at him like he was damaged goods? Or who wasn’t checking him for signs of a backslide?
He didn’t get clean-slate conversations like this anymore. Not with his family. Not with friends. Not even with himself. Rebecca felt like a gulp of clean, fresh air. He wanted to close his eyes and inhale. In this moment, he could be a man with no past. He could be whoever he wanted to be. And right now, he wanted to be the guy who was making this woman laugh.
She cocked her head. “You say that like you’ve been planning to do this TV detective routine for a while.”
“It’s a life goal,” he said solemnly. “I mean, I’ve done it at home alone, but that really isn’t as fun. Plus, it pisses off the neighbors. All those banging doors.”
She laughed again, and he felt like he’d won some kind of prize. She seemed like someone who didn’t give those laughs away easily.
“Now all we need are weapons,” he declared.
She reached into the bag of takeout and pulled out the eco-friendly cornstarch forks Dev used in place of plastic cutlery. “How’s this?”
“Perfect. We can go for the eyes.” He took his fork and grabbed the keys. “Let’s do this.”
“I’m ready.” Some of their playing around must’ve distracted her from her nerves because when Rebecca got out of the van, her shoulders seemed looser and there was a tentative smile on her face. She nodded toward the house and set her fork on the hood. He followed suit, since if he really had to take action, he’d need his hands free. “My extra key is by the back door.”
They headed around the house and into the small backyard. She hunched near an overgrown herb garden and fished around, finally coming up with one of those fake rocks. She flipped it over and keyed in a three-digit code on a spinner combination lock.
Wes snapped a leaf off one of her plants and inhaled the scent. “Mmm, lemon thyme. You’ve got quite a collection out here. Cilantro. Oregano. Italian parsley. I’m a little jealous.”
She glanced over her shoulder at him. “I honestly have no idea what most of them are or what to do with all of them. I had the house landscaped when I moved in, and I guess the gardeners picked the perfect spot because they grow like crazy. Except the basil, which was the one I actually knew how to use. That one was a goner during the first hundred-degree day of summer.”
“Basil is a sensitive soul.” It was on the tip of his tongue to tell her he could show her how to use the herbs, but he held the offer back. His brother had been right. Making her laugh was like some weird sort of drug to his starved system, but she didn’t need a guy flirting with her right now. It couldn’t go anywhere anyway. He didn’t date, for one. And even if he was doing the casual hookup thing these days, she didn’t strike him as the type who’d be down for that, especially with someone like him. He had nothing to offer her besides garden-care tips.
About the Author:
Roni wrote her first romance novel at age fifteen when she discovered writing about boys was way easier than actually talking to them. Since then, her flirting skills haven’t improved, but she likes to think her storytelling ability has. After earning a master’s degree in social work from LSU, she worked in a mental health hospital, counseled birthmothers as an adoption coordinator, and did management recruiting in her PJs. But she always returned to writing.
Though she’ll forever be a New Orleans girl at heart, she now lives in Dallas with her husband and son. If she’s not working on her latest story, you can find her cooking, reading, or picking up another hobby she doesn’t need. She is a two-time RITA Award winner and a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author.
