Exactly the right amount of time was on world building. There were several terms that existed in this world but that have no parallels in our own. It was nice to have them explained clearly the first time they were used, especially for the terms that were a little complex. I always felt like I knew what was going on here, and that was definitely a good thing.
There were numerous grammatical and punctuation errors in this story. As keen as I was about the plot itself, it was distracting to encounter so many mistakes as I was reading. They made me hesitant to recommend this to anyone even though I would have otherwise been telling everyone I know who reads science fiction to check it out. If this hadn’t been a problem, I would have chosen a much higher rating.
The characters were thoughtful and intelligent people. I appreciated the way they considered all of their options before making decisions whenever possible. Obviously, there were times in the plot when things were moving too quickly for a leisurely discussion about what they should do, but they took the contemplative route when their adventures allowed for it. This isn’t something I see happening nearly enough in this genre, so I was pleased to find it in an otherwise fairly action packed storyline.
NOUSOPOLIS was a thought provoking peek at one possible future that I’d recommend to anyone who loves the science fiction genre.

Dark has only just wandered into town and is testing out all the new sights, scents and scenes. Following his nose, he ends up in front of a small restaurant with the most amazing smells emanating from it. He’s floored by the name – The Vegan Werewolf – but despite his deep skepticism he enters anyway. Anything smelling that good can’t be too bad – even if he knows he hates vegan food. Dark will soon find it’s more than the food here that his mouth waters for.
I absolutely, positively adored this super short story. I was quite skeptical myself – such a short story (not even 50 pages) and one with a werewolf and a chef didn’t sound like one of the best stories I’d read in months. I was utterly wrong – this story is likely one of my top 5 reads so far this year, and I’ve never been happier to be so delightfully surprised. I adored Dark’s character – he’s a werewolf and knows himself, warts and all. This doesn’t, however, stop him from trying something new or being open to possibilities. Despite the fact he knows he hates Vegan food, the smells he encounters – and his hungry stomach – press his hand to trying something completely outside his comfort food. And I loved how he could poke fun at himself as much as everything else – “What’s navarattan when it’s at home?”. I laughed like a loon at half the witty banter and adored the fact that Dark – and the author – clearly enjoyed this little story as a lighter piece and just rolled with it all.
Erik was a lovely contrast to this, slender, Vegan and denying his wolfish side. My only regret (and the reason I needed to deduct that half star) was because I really, really wish the author had been given enough space/word count to delve at least a little into why Erik felt the need to control his own restaurant and deny himself his wolf-half and go Vegan. Erik explains to Dark that he couldn’t handle killing other animals and eating meat despite his wolf, but Dark seemed to think there was something deeper in Erik’s past pressing this and that tiny plot point was left dangling and I don’t feel it was resolved fully. Everything else about this story was amazing – the sex glorious and passionate and instinctive, Erik and Dark both enjoying each other and unable to resist even before they came to know each other fully.
Readers looking for a blisteringly hot, super short and fun read with werewolves, delicious food, amazing scents and some laugh-out-loud funny moments should find this story and wonderful as I did. Highly Recommended.

He’d seen her before.
Lor knew that the moment he looked up from the business he was conducting with his grandfather’s friend. In the midst of a busy marketplace on a glorious spring day, he caught sight of a woman he recognized, which wasn’t unusual in itself, but with this woman, it was.
Lor and the old man with the missing eye had been going over the purchase Lor was making of slag material for his grandfather’s blacksmith stall when he glanced up and saw her. In truth, he saw her only from the back; it was the hair that had his attention. In the sunlight, the red curls glistened like molten fire.
Everything about her caught his eye. She was dressed in a long tunic and braies from what he could see, unusual for a lass, but she’d marched down the road with her basket of skins in her arms in a cadence that seemed much more like a man’s than a woman’s.
Purposeful.
Confident.
He’d seen that walk once before.
“Lor?”
The old man next to him was trying to get his attention, but Lor couldn’t take his eyes from the woman as she walked down the dusty avenue. She was weaving in and out among the villagers on this busy market day, and Lor didn’t want to lose sight of her.
He put up a hand to the old man.
“Wait a moment,” he said. “I’ll return.”
He didn’t wait for a reply. Quickly, he headed out into the street while the old blacksmith watched him with some frustration.
“Where are ye going, lad?” he called after him. “If ye dunna come back, I’ll rob ye blind. I’ll tell yer grandfather that it’s yer fault he was cheated out of a good price for his iron!”
The old man meant it as a jest, hoping Lor would return, but the young blacksmith simply waved him off as if he didn’t believe him, which he didn’t. His grandfather, Nikolaus, and old Albe had been doing business since before Lor was born. He didn’t much believe anything the old liars said.
At the moment, he was on the hunt.
The red curls were up ahead, and he followed them like a cat tracking a mouse. There was something about the woman that he remembered from long ago, and as he politely stepped aside to let a woman and her children pass by, it began to occur to him just where he’d seen that hair.

It was difficult to say why an incident from eight years ago suddenly stood out for him. It had been a fleeting moment as far as moments in time went. But it had stayed with him: the young lass who had practically saved him from a band of bloodthirsty cutthroats. Never mind that they were only children; Lor remembered being as afraid of them as if they’d been the mightiest army of men.

He’d been stupid once, but he wasn’t going to be stupid again.
This time, he was going to be careful.
Lor continued to follow the lass. She finally came to a stop at a merchant who dealt in hides. As he hid back in the crowd, watching, Lor could see the lass holding up the fine pelts she’d brought, negotiating a price with an old man who seemed to be smiling at her too much. At one point, he reached out and pinched her cheek.
She slapped him.
Lor laughed softly.
