I’ve read other books by Gale Stanley and haven’t been steered wrong yet. This book was no exception. The writing flowed well and drew me in from the first page. I had to know what would happen. It’s a short story, but the characters are well-rounded. I rooted for them to get together.

Rory is a coywolf – part coyote, part wolf. Interesting. I hadn’t read a coywolf story, so this was new and good for me. He’s shy, rough around the edges and a little beaten down. I liked his determination and growth through the story.

Logan, the alpha, hasn’t come out. He loves being the alpha, but has reservations. I understood him. He’s been thrust into a job he’s not sure he can handle. His growth was nice, too. ort

There is an instalove component to the story, but it worked. The steamy scenes are just that, steamy. The chemistry was great, too.

Fearless in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell – Spotlight and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Kari Lynn Dell who is celebrating the upcoming release of Fearless in Texas, the fourth book in the Texas Rodeo series. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win a Texas Rodeo bundle of books.

He’d step in front of a bull to save a life
But even he’s no match for a girl this Texas tough

Rodeo bullfighter Wyatt Darrington’s got it all figured out. The perfect car, the perfect job, the perfect looks—the perfect lie. He may be on the fast track to the Hall of Fame, but he knows he’ll always be an outsider to people like Melanie Brookman. Texas-born and bred, with the arena in her blood, Melanie’s come to see Wyatt as her personal enemy, and that suits him just fine—this way, she’ll never realize the truth.

He’s been crazy in love with her for years.

Melanie’s always been a fighter. Fiercely independent and tough as nails, she’s stood up to everything that got in her way—including Wyatt. But now her infamous temper’s got her on the ropes, and there’s nowhere left to run but toward the man she swore she’d never trust…and this time, there’s no denying just how hot he makes her burn.

Wyatt braced a hand on the front door of the Bull Dancer Saloon, blocking Melanie. “You can’t go back in there.”

She looked at his arm as if debating whether she should bite it or snap it in half. “You think you can stop me?”

“Yes.” He jerked a thumb toward the door and quoted the flyspecked sign posted inside. “I am the proprietor, and we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.”

Hell. That wasn’t what he’d meant to say, but the sparks that were flying off of her were burying themselves under his skin, kindling fires that threatened to reduce all of his good intentions to ashes. Her mouth dropped open, and he braced himself for some truly spectacular swearing. Instead, she snapped it shut, whirled around, and strode away, her shiny red heels clicking angrily on the empty street.

“Melanie…wait! Could we just talk—”

Her answer was a stiff middle finger shot straight in the air. He took a couple of steps in pursuit, but his ankle made it clear that anything above a sedate stroll was a bad idea, not that he was sure what he’d do if he caught her. Attempting to stop her when she was like this would be like tackling a mountain lion, but if she intended to go to one of the other bars, she was headed the wrong direction.

“Where are you going?”

“To the bridge. It’ll have to do, since I assume you’ll follow me and there’s not a cliff handy.”

He’d already taken several more steps, but he stopped. “The rail is too high.”

“Then I’ll knock you over the head with a rock and roll you off the dike.”

She wouldn’t. Would she? “If you’re going to commit assault and attempted murder, you’ll need your keys to make your getaway.”

She stopped dead and spun around. He held up the keys in one hand and the purse in the other.

She swore and started back toward him. “Don’t think I won’t kick you square in the nuts and stomp on your fingers when you fall.”

“Not a doubt in my mind.” He unlocked the door that led up to her apartment, yanked it open, and threw both the keys and the purse to the top of the stairs before she could reach him. Then he stepped back, feet braced, ready to dodge or deflect any blow aimed at his groin. If Melanie had said it, she was seriously considering it.

She went for the door instead, but paused with her hand on the knob. “If I go in after them, you won’t let me out.”

“Nope.” Although it would take all his strength to hold the door shut if she was determined to push it open, and there was the fire escape…

Her hand dropped, and she turned on him. If it were possible for a stare to be literally cutting, his guts would’ve fallen out onto the street. “What…the hell…is your problem?”

“You.” He gestured toward her painted face, her dress, those damn red shoes. “I know what all of that means, but you’re wrong. And if you would just let me explain—”

“Yes!” She threw her hands in the air like a Baptist preacher. “Please, oh wise and knowing male, tell me how I’m supposed to feel. Better yet, explain why it is that you could leave this place with any of those women you’ve never met before and you get high fives, but if I do the same, I’m an embarrassment to your shitty little bar.”

Despite his vow to remain calm, his temper began to stir. “I did not say—”

“You don’t have to. I grew up in the goddamn Bible Belt. I’ve heard it all my life.” The bitterness in her voice ran generations deep. “Well, sorry, but not sorry. I’m done trying to please anyone but myself. I’ll sleep with who I want, when I want, and y’all can just deal with it.”

Not likely. Wyatt’s anger boiled up, shooting past the red line and straight into fury. Yes, her rage was justified, but she did not get to lump him in with bastards like Michael and her former boss. All he’d ever wanted, from damn near the first moment they’d spoken on the phone, was Melanie, but it was as if the entire universe had conspired against him, and he was so damn tired of fighting this bone-deep need…

He took a step toward her. Then another. She didn’t budge, but her eyes flicked toward the apartment door as if reconsidering her choices.

He leaned in close, his breath fanning her cheek, his voice low and lethal even to his own ears. “Is that what you want? Just someone with a pulse you can use up and toss out when you’re done?”

He heard her swallow, but she didn’t flinch. “Why shouldn’t I? Men have been doing it forever.”

“Yes, we have.”

He gathered a fistful of her hair and wound the warm silk around and around his hand until his knuckles were pressed to the nape of her neck. Her breath caught at the electric press of skin against skin, and her eyes went even darker. The line he’d held for so long had been crossed. He was beyond stopping—unless she made him.

“As long as you’re determined to do something you’ll hate yourself for in the morning, it might as well be with me.” And then he kissed her.

And instead of shoving him away, Melanie clenched both hands in his shirt and yanked him closer.

Andi Ryan moves to Biloxi to care for her godmother and takes a job as finance supervisor for the renovated Bayou Princess casino. She discovers someone is skimming from the till and starts her own investigation, worried she will be blamed for the theft when the new owner discovers her godmother has a gambling addiction.

A rival Vegas competitor has sent a spy in to ruin the Bayou Princess, and Garrett and Andi are forced to work together to prove her innocence and discover the identity of their casino spy.

Filled with interesting, colorful characters this most recent take on Cinderella certainly entertains.

Andi is a fun character, caring and loyal. Garrett is a picture perfect hero, except for that pesky detail he forgets to tell Andi as they become embroiled in a relationship. Flora, as the “fairy godmother” in this tale is just a hoot. And we have an evil stepmother and step-sister to seal the deal.

While not a suspense novel, this story does have some of the elements: an embezzler, crime, mystery…but it’s handled with a light touch and the emphasis is on the romance. The relationship is sweet (Andi has a few hang-ups about sex, so the couple keeps it pretty chaste outside of a few steamy kisses) and I admit to thinking Garrett was a little too good to be true. Perhaps the author painted him thus so it was even harder for Andi to accept his secret later on? I won’t say that the “surprises” surprised me much (well, maybe one), but they weren’t the point of the book.

At its heart, this is a romance. It covers all the right things to fit tidily into the romance genre and fans of the genre will thoroughly enjoy the book. It’s not earth-shatteringly unique or a book I’ll likely remember years from now, but it was one that made me smile and kept me reading until the very end and, ultimately, isn’t that what romances are all about?

The food smelled amazing, and her stomach reminded her she needed to build up her strength. The drugs she’d been pumped full of over the last few days were still making her sluggish, and she’d barely eaten. She picked up her—she laughed out loud—her spoon, and she dug in. She saw the smile that lit his features a second before the taste of the meal hit her taste buds.

Ella groaned. “That’s delicious.”

“I know,” he said with not a hint of humility. “Tia Rosa left me stocked the last time she was here.”

Ella took another bite, watching her food instead of Jude. “You didn’t cook it?”

“No time,” he said around a bite.

She didn’t ask him why he had no time. She knew. He’d been hunting her hard the last six months. Brody had warned her and done everything he could to keep proof Ella was alive from Endgame, but in the end, the world of spec ops was only so big. Word got around. Once she’d save King in Spain, she’d known her gig was up. She hadn’t anticipated the scenario playing out quite like this though.

“This place yours?” she asked. She needed information on him. Had to have it. Like the Jude junkie she was.

“Well now, Ella, I don’t think that’s any of your business,” he answered in a hard voice.

She winced.

“Unless you’re willing to trade information?” Jude asked with a milder tone.

She couldn’t not look at him anymore. She raised her gaze and found him staring at her, his face blank, his eyes hot. “Don’t ask that of me, Jude.”

She couldn’t call him Dagan anymore. He was Jude. She could give herself that much at least.

He barked out a laugh that was anything but humorous. “I’m going to ask that and more, Ella.”

She kept her gaze on him, and he returned it, refusing to look away. “If you’d just give me some time—”

He cut her off. “There’s no more time. We’re out of it. Dresden is making moves that will decimate world order. We need to know everything you’ve got, and we need it yesterday.”

“That’s not my mission, Jude,” she protested.

He took a bite of his beef and then a drink of tea Ella knew she’d find unbearably sweet. He wiped his mouth, never looking away from her. “Fuck your mission, Ella.”

She snorted. “You have fucked me. Royally.” She wondered where her anger was. He’d taken her off grid somewhere, was making it plain as day he was going to do everything in his power to get information from her, and she was as far from angry as she’d ever been.

“Not yet, lady,” he said with a wink before picking his fork back up. “But that’s coming too.”

Her breath caught, and an errant piece of meat lodged in her throat. She coughed, choking even as she laughed at his overwhelming gall. He started to get up, but she held up a hand, managing to dislodge the meat before she took a drink of his tea.

“Damn that’s sweet,” she complained.

“Only way to drink tea,” he responded.

He was lulling her, and damn him, it was working. She was falling back into her pattern with him, and the comfort of it was a draw she could barely resist.

She couldn’t allow this. She was going to hurt him when she left again. Because she would leave again. She had to take Dresden down, and the only way to do that was from inside his organization. He was probably wondering where the hell she was and mobilizing to either find her or destroy Jude. And beyond all that, Ella’s skin continued to crawl with worry for Anna Beth Caine. Fear prickled her skin.

“Where are we?” she asked suddenly, her fear communicating in the waver of her voice.

He held up six fingers.

Her eyes watered. Damn tears!

“You’re sure?”

He peered at her, intense and a bit put out, if the look on his face was anything to go by. Yes, she thought, how dare I question the ultimate warrior, Jude Dagan.

“I need to hear the words, Jude,” she admitted.

“We’re safe, Ella. I won’t let anything hurt you ever again.”

“Not a promise you can make,” she countered.

“You don’t think I can keep you safe?” Oh, the affront in his voice!

“I don’t think you have to. I’ve done enough to stay alive the last year, Jude. All you’re doing by keeping me here is making things exponentially more impossible for me.”

He grunted. “They were impossible before you left with Dresden in Beirut. I’m trying to keep you alive.”

“And mine my secrets in the process? Come on, Jude, let’s be honest. The only reason you’ve got me here is because I’ve become your mission. King wants answers. Endgame wants Dresden’s head. What none of you seem to realize is that there is more in play here!”

Ella slammed her hand down on the table and stood up, leaning over the table to get in his face. “I can keep myself alive. It’s you I’m worried about!”

He stared up at her, his gaze moving over her face, his expression giving her nothing. She had never yelled at Jude. Ever. But she wasn’t the same Ella anymore.

“Sit down and finish eating,” he said softly. He picked up his fork and did the same, ignoring her outburst as if it’d never happened.

She plopped back into her chair, picked up her spoon, and ate. Silence reigned through the rest of the meal. When Ella finished, she picked up her bowl and carried it to the sink, washing it and her spoon before putting them in the drying rack. She attacked the rest of the dishes and finished them off.

As she was drying her hands, Jude came up behind her. His hands settled on the granite countertop at her sides, his front pressing against her back. His heat wrapped around her as his scent toyed with her emotions.

“Let’s establish the rules right now,” he said at her ear, his voice gruff and hitting her right between the legs. “I don’t need you to keep me safe. I don’t need your protection. I need your cooperation. I need your secrets. Because, Ella? You’re mine. You have been since the moment I saw you, and you always will be. It is my right, my goddamn privilege, to take care of you. And if I have to fight you to do that, then by God, I will. I’ve been waging wars for a long time, lady, and when I fight, I win. You’re too important for me to walk away from.”

Her head fell back against his shoulder, and he took advantage, breathing his fire across her neck. She swore she felt the tip of his tongue on her skin. She went molten.

“Don’t do this to me, Jude. I begged you in Russia, and I’m begging you here.”

“It’s too late to beg. The game is in play, has been since you began working Dresden. The difference is that I know I’m a major player now.”

“You don’t know what you’re asking me for,” she whispered desperately.

“I’m asking you…for you, Ella. Your lies, your truths, and everything in between.”

Her heart climbed out of her chest and sank to his feet. “The rules?”

“Nothing but truth from now on. If you don’t want to answer me, tell me, but always give me the truth,” he answered, biting the tendon that ran from her neck to the shoulder.

Ella hissed in a breath as lust speared her midsection. “What else?” she questioned him breathlessly.

“Truth in everything, Ella. That’s the only rule,” he said against her skin.

Read an Excerpt:

Jesse led Trevor back over to their rock bench and knelt to rummage in his pack. “In Afghanistan, the tradition is to shoot flares off on the one-year anniversary of someone—of losing someone.” He pulled a small box out of a zippered pocket and held it up. “Obviously we can’t shoot off flares around here, but I thought maybe we could light these for Riley tonight.”

Trevor stared at him before reaching out to take the box from him. “Sparklers?” he said wonderingly. “You bought sparklers?”

“Yeah. I brought a lighter, too.” Jesse brandished it. “Hey, if you don’t want to, that’s—”

“No, it’s perfect. Riley loved these things on the Fourth of July.” Trevor took one out. “Here, light me.”

It took a few tries, but soon Trevor’s sparkler was burning, the little stick spitting and glowing bright in the dark night.

Jesse lit his off of Trevor’s, holding it away from himself, watching the shower of sparks. “God, I haven’t done these since I was a kid.”

“You can write in the air with them, remember?” Trevor made a curlicue motion, leaving behind a spiral of light that dissipated a split second later.

Jesse tried it, and soon they were laughing, trying to top each other’s skywriting artwork, running through the box of sparklers until they were down to the last few.

Finally Trevor sank down on the stone bench, holding his aloft and looking up at the sky. “I miss you, Riley James. I love you.”

Jesse hoisted his sparkler up, too. “Miss you, Riles.”

“I have only ever attempted to properly run away from it once, and I was not successful,” he told me. “Melbourne probably has all the things a reasonable person could want from a hometown; it’s green, safe, and eminently liveable. It’s predictable, basically, and that’s also the thing about it that can drive me a little mad. Melbourne does not fret through the imagination. It does not have a smell. The places that I really love have a hint of danger to them. But Beirut, Naples and Phnom Penh are cities to have brief, sweaty flings with. Melbourne is a place to come home to.”

Christopher told me that his writing has to be shared with an extremely busy and demanding full-time job – he’s a middle-school teacher and his students make him very happy- proving an essential counterweight to the time he spends in his own head.

“Novels take years to finish, and they can weigh you down a bit,” he explained. “Teaching, conversely, is almost always a pleasure. Finding the balance between the two can be difficult, but I’ve found that I need both in my life. Perhaps I’m just a sucker for punishment, but there’s something gratifying about the full-contact business of educating a roomful of fifteen-year-olds last period on a Friday.”

When it comes to his writing, he likes to wake up, caffeinate himself, and work until midday.

He admitted, “This is rarely possible, though. These days I make time in the evenings, and attack the manuscript for a few hours after dinner. It’s not ideal, but nothing is. Finding time to write is simple. If you want to do it, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse. I look at it as a job. If that sounds unromantic, so be it. This is a year-round process, too. There are the occasional days when it is actually impossible to write, but these are few and far between.”

I asked him to us something about Jack Was Here that’s not in the blurb.

“When I was nineteen, I was in the process of enlisting in the Australian armed forces. A few weeks before the medical, I went on a camping road trip with a few friends. While surfing, I ploughed headfirst into a sandbar and crushed three cervical vertebrae in my spine. This injury did not permanently disable me, but it was enough to disqualify me from service. It was obviously catastrophic in the moment, but perhaps this event was not without reason. Hugh Fitzgerald, the protagonist of Jack Was Here, is in many ways the person I might have been if that had not happened to me.”

When it comes to writer’s block, Christopher told me that he’s in agreement with Norman Mailer.

“Most cases of writer’s block can be put down to a simple failure of the ego. Proper writers never run out of ideas. What they do run out of is time, or motivation, or self-belief. A decent streak of stubbornness helps, I think. If you grow accustomed to working without encouragement, then your drive to create will operate on autopilot. We all have our moments of doubt, but I try to not let them grow into anything more than what they are- moments.”

He believes that the most important elements of good writing are story and dialogue.

“I find that language can be overly fetishised by new writers,” he explained. “Powerful prose is completely dependent on the context that it exists in. Great stories can thrive without great language, but great language cannot support itself. Readers need characters and situations that they care about. Anything else that a writer can do is completely dependent on establishing that connection.”

Because of this need for characters, they should always come first, in his estimation.

“You should take care in their making, because once properly complete they are likely to haunt you for the next few years,” he said. “E.L. Doctorow said that writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia, an observation that I have found to be uncomfortably accurate. If you create interesting characters, and give them interesting problems, then the plot should take care of itself.”

“How do you do research for your books?” I asked.

“Travel is a very useful form of investigation, particularly the aimless, wandering variety. Researching fiction is rarely deliberate, and often completely unintentional. Those who spend too much time in my orbit should be warned that they are likely to have their personalities harvested for interesting quirks. To write well, you have to listen well, and part of this is making a habit of surrounding yourself with a variety of people.”

He did admit that writing fiction can be a lonely business.

The success of your work lives and dies on your talent and effort. This is both the best and worst thing about being a writer. It can also be a personally expensive process, and no matter how far you get there is always room for doubt. Uncertainty is in many ways essential to creating decent fiction. Writing a novel can be an exhausting struggle.”

He’s pleased, though, that for the first time in his life he actually has a proper writing space. I asked him to tell us about it.

“I’m currently living in a fairly squalid share-house which, incidentally, is condemned to be demolished at the of the month. Despite this somewhat fraught timeline, I am enjoying my little piece of the world while it lasts. I occupy a creaky, well-ventilated loft, one corner of which is devoted to the many-limbed monster that is my next novel. I’m a messy-desk person, something for which I am completely unapologetic. My finest tool, apart from the laptop, is a cork pin-board covered in a swarm of index cards. This is far superior to my previous system, which relied on post-it notes and proved vulnerable to unexpected gusts of wind.”

When I asked him what authors have most influenced his writing, he told me that it was a very difficult question to answer.

“Inspiration is a strange process, and at its best, both involuntary and invisible. A few authors do spring to mind, though,” he said. “For fiction, Kurt Vonnegut, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Cormac McCarthy, Lionel Shriver, Richard Flanagan, and Salman Rushdie. For poetry, Blake, Coleridge, and Byron. For criticism, Harold Bloom. For non-fiction, Orwell and Capote. And of course, being a tweedy English teacher, I am of the firm opinion that the best any writer can hope for is to find new and interesting ways to plagiarise Shakespeare.”

Finally a few fun questions for Christopher.

“Have you ever eaten a crayon?”

“Great question. Most probably. Burnt Sienna seems to strike a chord in my memory. And while we’re on this topic, credit to the good people in the crayon-naming department of the Crayola company for not dumbing down the figurative language. What is Sienna, anyway? A pigment? A person? How, and why, was it or she burnt? A question for the ages.”

“Favorite color?”

“Burnt Sienna. That was a particularly delicious crayon.”

Hugh Fitzgerald is losing control. In the aftermath of a traumatic end to his military career, his life has disintegrated. Hugh is approaching the end of his tether when a desperate plea for help arrives from a most unexpected quarter.

Nineteen-year-old Jack Kerr, halfway through a coming-of-age trip to Thailand, has disappeared. He has left few traces, little information, and absolutely no answers. As the days turn into weeks, his parents grow increasingly frantic.

They approach Hugh with a simple request; do whatever it takes to find their son, and do whatever it takes to bring him home. It sounds easy enough. The money is right. More importantly, it’s something to do – something useful.

But as soon as Hugh touches down in Thailand, the illusion of control begins to slip through his fingers. Jack’s warm trail is easy to find, but it leads somewhere unimaginable. Finally, as he closes in, Hugh is forced to resort to increasingly desperate measures.

This is a sweet second chance love story featuring two people, Rose and Dakota, as they meet too briefly at Woodstock. They each feel a connection, but circumstances prevented them from acting on that connection.

Fast forward several years and fate has once again stepped in to throw Rosemary and Anthony together. They each realize the connection is still there, but there are now other circumstances that try to get in the way.

The first part of the book features their time at Woodstock and the author does a wonderful job making you feel as if you were there. I could almost feel the rain and the mud, smell the pot, and hear the music. It was indeed a once in a lifetime experience.

All of the characters, even the secondary ones, were very well drawn. The author did a great job at showing both side of the “free love” issue from the sixties.

This was a quick and enjoyable read–I was surprised when I got to the end of it. I literally could not put it down once I started reading it. Kudos to the author.

He’s going to clear his name, but what will happen after? Will he go back and claim Scarlett as his, or will he let her go?

Ryker had been framed and sent to jail. Desperate, he managed to escape and just needed a bit of time – and luck – to prove his innocence. Hijacking Scarlett as she took some groceries to her car, Ryker finds this strange, curvy woman full of surprises. Most shocking of all was the growing realization that she could prove to be his saving grace, and not the freedom Ryker had so desperately dreamed of all this time.

After the first few pages I realised this was one of those “disengage your brain, sit back and enjoy the ride” style of stories. I found it rather unfathomable that Scarlett could treat being kidnapped at gunpoint by an escaped convict with not just aplomb but a hint of confidence and keep her self-assurance intact. It just didn’t feel at all realistic to me. Once I simply enjoyed the story as a fun, sexy tale, however, I really started to get into it. Scarlett had quite a sad history and I was really pleased she hadn’t let it ruin her character. While I definitely felt she was in a sort of limbo, I was equally glad that the author didn’t short-change Scarlett from the effect her trauma would have had on her life, personality and outlook. I thought this was balanced quite well, Scarlett not being a shut-in, but similarly not having ignored it and been a glittering happy-go-lucky kind of woman.

Ryker is the classic “bad boy been framed” and we as readers are assured he’s good deep down. Scarlett is a strong, independent, curvy and utterly capable woman and I’d love to have her calmness under pressure and gunpoint. The chemistry between these two quickly sparked out of control and I loved the sizzling sex scenes exploding between them. Again a fair amount of suspension of disbelief was needed, but the fun and joy I got from reading the sexy story far outweighed my desire for a believable plotline. Hot and sexy – these two characters certainly burned up the pages and made the short story quite enjoyable for me.

Readers wanting a realistic, logical and relatable story might not find this book suits their needs. But for a fun, sexy and dangerously (but not) bad boy tale could find this as enjoyable as a readers-escape as I did. Sit back with a glass of bubbly, grab a handful of cookies and enjoy the ride. This was a fun and pleasurable way to pass an evening and I enjoyed it.
