Once upon a time, the man known as Joshua Katzen was all of these things. Now retired from his military intelligence career, Katzen lives a peaceful, mundane life as an archaeological photographer and illustrator—that was the plan anyway. In reality, Josh’s past keeps interfering with his attempted retirement.
The stories in this collection are about a few of those times.
This is a bunch of previously published short stories grouped into “A Josh Katzen Collection”. Having never read any of the stories before I was really pleased that the first short story gave a little background on Josh’s character – enough that I got the general idea of him and the adventures he gets up to. I was really pleased – I love a good archaeology/Indiana Jones style of story and found these short stories were great. Short enough to read one in a quick sitting, but with a number of them all bunched together this made for some great reading that I enjoyed.
I definitely think this collection of stories will appeal to readers who enjoy adventure/treasure hunting style of stories. There’s not a lot of time for intricate plots – each story is fairly short – but I can absolutely say to me they acted to whet my appetite for more. I plan to keep an eye out for any full-length novels as I found these to be well thought out with interesting characters, a good pace, some action and thrills and best of all I enjoyed the author’s writing style.
More action/adventure-ish to my mind than mystery based, these all fell into a strict “non-romance” category to me. Half of the stories don’t even have a heroine – just Josh as the hero/archaeologist and a few smaller secondary characters (usually requesting Josh’s help to “retrieve” or study something). There’s enough action and adventure though, that I feel sure any readers who enjoy treasure hunter/action movies should definitely enjoy these fast-paced stories.
With an interesting new hero and a bunch of quick vignette-style short stories this is a great book that’s easy to read for a short while, then put down and do something else only to eagerly pick it up and start the next short story. I enjoyed each of these mini-adventures and will definitely look further into this author. Recommended.

Oh my goodness, what a great book! I smiled the entire time and even laughed out loud a few times. I would read this book again. I’m sorry that it’s over.
I thoroughly enjoyed absolutely everything about this book. The plot was refreshingly original. I was just talking to my mother-n-law yesterday about how there have been many movie remakes over the last few years. The lack of originality is frustrating. This is why I rather read a book then go to the movies. Lights out Lucy was exceptionally written. I loved the cast of characters.
Lucy, the heroine, was an everyday average person. I related to her vulnerability and clumsiness. I was proud of Lucy’s accomplishments that took courage to achieve.
West Alder, the hero, was the perfect book boyfriend. Together they were hilarious. I am not exaggerating when I say that I smiled throughout the entire book from beginning to end. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I read this story in one sitting. I was feeling too good and happy to put it down.
I have no qualms about recommending this entertaining read. I’m seriously going to read it again.

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a fourteenth story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.
It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It’s actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way. With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves.
Business is good . . .
When I finished this book the first word I thought of was — Wow!
Paranormal monsters come in various shapes and sizes and most of them are in this book. Vampires, werewolfs, ghouls, gargoyles, wights and anything else you can think of — they’re all in this book. As the title says this is about Monster Hunter International, a company that finds and disposes of monsters, sometimes with the FBI and sometimes in spite of the FBI.
Owen (or Z) is the main character and he’s big, an expert fighter and does not believe in monsters. His mind is changed when his boss turns into a werewolf and tries to kill him. He survives and is offered a job with MHI.
This book is fast moving, intense and has one aim in sight. To get rid of the seven master vampires and the Cursed One who has immeasurable powers. Owen finds himself the pivot of this job when he talks to an ancient Monster Hunter in his dreams.
The intensity of the story is kept going not only by the savage fights between monsters and hunters, but also the knowledge that the Cursed One is heading for the Place of Power to finish the world as it is today. They have to dispose of him before he gets reaches his destination.
I have to say this book is admirably written and flows without any hiccups at all. I liked the fact Owen might have been big and strong but he wasn’t a macho man and knew he had a lot to learn about monster hunting. There’s the usual antagonist within the group, plus a tendency for the monsters to make a beeline for him but the other characters also get their day of fighting. Excellent book, as I said at the beginning. Wow!

Callum tied the mare’s reins to his stallion’s, then circled the fire and crouched in front of her.
“The horse is yours, Maggie, and the supplies. I willna stop you if you decide to leave, but I will send a guard with you—five men. They will see you safely to your brother.”
Instead of feeling grateful, disappointment crashed through her. What was wrong with her? She pinned a smile on her face, hoping he read it as a sign of thanks. She opened her mouth to tell him she’d leave immediately, but he waylaid her with a raised hand.
“Nay, I have more to say. Let me finish, please.”
She closed her mouth and nodded. Her heart beat faster. That flutter returned in her chest. When he grasped her hand and held it in his, palm to palm, her throat tightened.
“Maggie, when I left you before, I meant to return in the spring. ’Twas my true intent to marry you, I swear it. I could hardly wait to make you my wife. But…things changed after my father died that winter. I kept thinking I would fix it by the next spring or next summer, until suddenly, three years had passed and I’d barely written, let alone come to see you.”
“Why didn’t you come?” She had to squeeze the words past the lump in her throat.
“I knew I wouldnae be able to leave if I did.”
She frowned, her anger boiling up all over again. “And why would you want to? I was of age.”
“’Twas not the right time.”
“And now is? When I’ve decided to leave? When I no longer trust you?”
“’Tis not ideal, I know—”
“Aye, you have that right.”
He clenched his jaw, and his chest rose as he breathed deeply. “We both have secrets. You don’t want to talk about yours, and I canna talk about mine. Not yet. I’m sorry, lass. But…if you can, I’d ask you to put that behind you. I told you I’d help you get to Edinburgh, to wherever John is, but there’s another option. I doona want you to leave. Father Lundie is riding with me. He’ll marry us, Maggie. Now.”
She gasped. Married? Now? “But…but…”
He lifted her hand and squeezed tight. “Stop thinking of the past and everything that stands in our way. Just think of the present. With me. You’re frightened of something, and this will give you protection. Not just mine, but my foster brothers’ and Gregor MacLeod’s too. We’ll help you with Ross and whatever else it is you’re running from.”
“So you’ll marry me to protect me? That’s all?”
“Nay. I’ll marry you because I want you. As my wife, as my lover, as the mother of my children. I will create a safe and happy home for you. You doona need to leave the Highlands, and I promise ne’er to leave you again.”

To recover from the shock, she takes some time off in Italy, swearing not to fall for any men while there. But that doesn’t mean she can’t fall for anyone on the trip home . . .
Country-music superstar Wade Thomas is lying low in a hotel bar when he gets the cold shoulder from the woman next to him. He’s used to fans fawning at his boots, and Trina is a refreshing change—so is the fact that she has no idea who he is.
As things begin to heat up, Trina discovers that the circumstances of her late husband’s death are not what they seemed. Now she’s in trouble, and Wade isn’t about to let her out of his sight. Getting close to love and danger could get them killed . . . or it could sweep them both off their feet.
Enjoy an Exclusive Excerpt:
Wade opted for sunglasses and a baseball cap in an effort to keep his identity on the down low. He stood in the back of the crowd, waiting outside of baggage claim, where he told Trina he would meet her. When was the last time he’d stood in an airport to pick someone up? He couldn’t remember.
He scanned the crowd, watching for the telltale sign of a cell phone turned his way. There were the kind of fans that noticed him in a crowd and would snap a sly picture, and then there were the people who walked right up, asked if he was Wade Thomas, and then requested a picture or an autograph. Seemed the pictures were the bigger request than his name on a piece of paper. Although he had signed plenty of boobs in his career.
His phone buzzed in his pocket, and he reached to answer without looking at the name.
“Hello.”
“Wade?” He didn’t recognize the voice.
“Depends on who is askin’.”
“It’s the blonde pit bull.”
He winced. Avery. “Trina did not tell you I said that.”
“She most certainly did.”
“Well, Miss Avery, I meant that out of my deepest respect,” he backpedaled. “Strong women run the earth.”
“Keep kissing up,” she said.
He laughed as he scanned the crowded exiting baggage claim. “What can I do for you?”
“I wanted to make sure you didn’t send some flunky to pick Trina up at the airport.”
“No, ma’am, I did not. I’m standing right here, waiting for her now.”
“Huh.”
“Anything else?” he asked, knowing full well Avery wasn’t done.
“Yeah. Don’t mess with her head.”
He opened his mouth to respond, only to be cut off.
“Don’t lie to her. Don’t tell her she’s the only one if she isn’t. Don’t be an asshole.”
Wade didn’t think The Blonde Pit Bull was a worthy enough title for the woman giving him sass on the phone.
“You’re a good friend, Avery. Trina’s lucky to have you on her side.” He really did mean that. Much as he was the one on the wrong end of the woman’s gun.
“Uh-huh … right.”
“I’m going to go out on a limb and say you really don’t like me, do you?”
“I know your kind, and I’ve warned her. But apparently there isn’t anything else I can do.”
From the crowd he saw a woman of Trina’s height with sleek black hair … his heart did a little two-step of its own.
“I’ll take good care of her. You can count on that.”
Yup, that was her. Those dark eyes caught his, even through his sunglasses, and her lips spread into a smile. The feeling in his belly made his entire body warm.
This was good.
This was very good.
Avery was saying something that he didn’t catch.
“Ah-huh … sure. Thanks for your advice.” And he hung up.
Trina pushed one small, round designer suitcase in front of her as she approached.
He wanted to kiss her. Wanted to throw his arms around her, spin her in a circle, and make her laugh with the silliness of it all.
He hesitated.
“Screw it.” Four giant steps and he gave in to the desire. He lifted her surprised frame off the ground, pulled her body flush with his, and dropped his lips to her ear. “I can’t believe you’re here.”
“Wade!”
He kissed the side of her head, opting for something less personal, considering he had yet to savor her lips.
Yet, God willing, be the right word.
Damn, she smelled good. Something exotic with a hint of floral. He pulled in a deep breath of her scent and savored it to memory.
“Put me down,” she laughed.
His sunglasses had twisted on his face and fell to the ground when he let her go. Her spice colored eyes peered into his. “You came.”
“I told you I would.” He couldn’t stop smiling.
“Okay … ohhh kaaay! This is good.”
Her chest shook with her laugh. “You’re blushing.”
“I’m a happy man,” he admitted freely.
She looked to the side and back again. “Do you think we should get out of the way?”
Wade followed her lead, found his glasses on the ground, and reached for her bag.
“I can—”
“But I’m going to,” he interrupted and placed the suitcase out of her reach. With his free hand, he reached for hers. Their first date was starting now, and he didn’t want anyone who might be watching to think for even a second that Trina wasn’t with him.

My Top Five Favorite Vacation Destinations by Kim Fielding – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Kim Fielding who is celebrating the release of her newest book, Blyd and Pearce. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win an audiobook of The Bureau, Volume 1.
Hi! I’m Kim Fielding, and today I’d like to share my 5 favorite vacation destinations. I love to travel, so winnowing this list to 5 was a real challenge, but here we go.
1. Croatia. I’ve actually lived here twice for short periods and visited several other times. It’s a small country with a lot to offer. There’s a lot of natural beauty, including the long Adriatic coastline and the amazing Plitvice Lakes National Park. I love the food too—you can find variations on Mediterranean, Eastern European, and Austro-Hungarian cuisine, along with some Croatian specialties. One of my favorites is štrukli, dough filled with cheese and baked. Another thing I love about Croatia is the café culture. Sitting at cafés, nursing a coffee and chatting with friends, is a centerpiece of Croatian life. I’ve also found Croatian people to wonderfully warm and generous, and they are very kind about my pathetic attempts to speak a few words of their language.
2. Portland, Oregon. I grew up there, and my family still lives in the Portland area, so I have personal reasons to like it. But Portland has a lot going for it, including beautiful scenery, a certain quirkiness to its residents, and wonderful restaurants. Also some great bookstores, most notably Powell’s, the world’s largest new and used bookstore. I’ve spent a lot of time and money in that place.
3. Port Townsend, Washington. This one is new to me; I made my first visit this summer. It’s a pretty town near the entrance to Puget Sound, with a downtown that looks much the same as it did in the 1880s. As port cities often do, it has a colorful history. Folks there were very friendly, and while I was visiting, I found all sorts of plot bunnies, so don’t be surprised when this town turns up in future stories. There are also several small bookstores, including one with an emphasis on writing. Our visit this year happened to coincide with a steampunk festival, which was a lot of fun.
4. Chicago. I just returned from a trip to this wonderful city, where I was born but haven’t lived since I was 8. Chicago has gorgeous architecture, world-class museums, and a really interesting history. There’s a lot of parkland too, even right in the middle of the city. It’s a great foodie city (yes, I’ll choose deep dish over thin crust any day). And there’s something indefinable about the local temperament that I really like. Confident, yet also realistic with a healthy dose of humor. Chicagoans lack the sense of self-importance I’ve found in many other big cities. And Chicago has a fantastic literary history too.
5. Hawaii. Yes, it’s beautiful, with perfect weather, stunning beaches, and delicious food. So what’s not to love? I also appreciate how much diversity—both geographical and human—you can find in such relatively small spaces. On the Big Island, for example, you can visit in a single day: rain forest, desert, sugar sand beaches, organic coffee plantations, and erupting volcanoes (although maybe not right now, since they’re erupting a bit too vigorously). Last time we visited, we went to a restaurant where the deck had a stunning view and was overrun with adorable little geckoes. We sat there eating lilikoi cheesecake. And if that isn’t a perfect vacation moment, I don’t know what is.
What are your favorite places to vacation?

The narrow stairway rose steeply, each step creaking under our feet and taking us into increasing darkness. I smelled onions and fish—a bit strong, but better than my apartment’s odors—and blindly held on to the banister. It occurred to me that Pearce was in a good position to attack me, since I’d have trouble defending myself in the blackness of unfamiliar territory. But I wasn’t afraid of him. Maybe some of his enchantment lingered.
We climbed four flights to the top floor, where he unlocked another door. A few scattered spiritlights flared to life at once, but he lit two lanterns as well.
It wasn’t a large apartment, and the roof angled steeply on both sides so that he had to stoop a little when he hung his lute and midnight-colored cloak on a hook. Bright fabrics adorned the walls—silks and embroidered cottons—and a thick mat and pile of pillows were heaped in one corner. Rag rugs and pillows for seating covered the wide floorboards. The apartment held little else other than a dry sink, a few shelves, a little stand with a chamber pot, a painted wardrobe. But it was a cozy space, and two pottery vases of flowers squatted on the windowsill.
“Do you want some wine?” he asked.
It wasn’t what I expected, so I didn’t answer at once. “Uh, yes. Sure.”
He took a green glass bottle from the shelf, pulled the cork, and poured a red liquid into a pair of plain clay cups.
He was no longer wearing the gauzy silks he’d performed in, but his current outfit was hardly understated. Embroidered snakes—matching the bright blue of his chausses—trimmed a sunshine-hued tunic, and instead of sensible boots, he wore scarlet stockings and yellow slippers with curled, pointed toes. On another man, the clothing would have been gaudy, but it suited him well.
I remained near the closed door. With a tiny quirk to his lips, he prowled closer. He held out one cup of wine, which I took, and when I hesitated to drink, he took a dainty sip of his own. “It’s mediocre, I’m afraid.”
Not being able to distinguish good wine from bad, I swallowed a mouthful. It tasted fine to me.
“What shall I call you?” he purred, standing quite close. He was older than I’d thought, but the fine lines at the corners of his eyes didn’t make him any less beautiful.
“Daveth Blyd.”
“It’s a pleasure, Citizen Blyd.”
“I’m not a citizen.”
He tilted his head. “Oh?”
He wore a scent—something spicy and warm—that made my head swim. And his voice….
When I was newly signed on as a city guard, my duties had included carting my captain’s soiled uniforms to the laundry. It wasn’t one of my favored tasks. But she’d been a showy woman and had her capes trimmed not with dyed wool but with velvet. I’d rarely felt anything so soft, and I used to give the velvet surreptitious little pets as I carried her clothes.
Jory Pearce’s voice was like that velvet: soft and rich and plush. And, I reminded myself, expensive.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books that Live Up to the Hype

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl
Welcome to another edition of Top Ten Tuesday! This week’s topic is Books that Live Up to the Hype. I’m typically wary of hype. Hearing that “everyone” is reading a book doesn’t necessarily make me want to read it. I’ve never felt the need to keep up with new releases, and I tend to read a lot of books from smaller publishers through my work at Long and Short Reviews. Also, if the book doesn’t live up to the hype, it is extremely disappointing. That being said, hype does make me curious. More often than not, I will eventually read much hyped books. I’ll just do it when I’m in the mood.
The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer-I didn’t hear about this series until I started participating in Top Ten Tuesday. So many people expressed their love for the stories and characters. I’m a fan of fairy tale retellings so I read the entire series this year. It was great!
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco-This is another one I heard about through Top Ten Tuesday. I really need to get my hands on the second book!
Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling-I didn’t read this series until I was an adult. I have vague memories of hearing about when I was in high school and college but I was always reading something else. When I finally got around to these books I loved them!
The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins-I was definitely wary of these books as I’m not really in to dystopian fiction. However, I had a very good friend recommend them to me. She also wanted to go see the movie. Since I wanted to read the books first, I picked up the series at my local bookstore. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put them down!
Elephant and Piggie Series by Mo Willems-I discovered this series when taking my children to the library. Everyone kept talking about how much their kids liked these books. I checked a few out and they are really fun! Mo Willems’ Pigeon Series is also very good.

Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead-The same friend who recommended The Hunger Games recommended this series to me, and I enjoyed it. More importantly it introduced me to the spin off series Bloodlines which I liked even more!
Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer-I know this series inspires very strong emotions, but hear me out. I got into this series right before the first movie came out (on the recommendation of that same friend). I found the books to be quick, entertaining reads that I enjoyed in the moment.
I’m not sure if the rest of the books on my list received a lot of hype when they were first released, but they have since become classics and remain very popular. I think that counts as hype, and I believe they are all worth checking out if you haven’t read them already.

But with a traitor still at large, they must rely on each other in every way, or their clans—and their love—will be destroyed.
When a reader cracks open this book, they’ll find a wonderful mystery filled with intrigue, danger and excitement as two feisty people are faced with betrayal in their very homes. Where can they be safe? Who can they trust? What is going on? Those are just a few of the questions that bombarded my brain as I read Highland Betrayal.
I enjoyed watching the sparks fly between Maggie and Callum. She’s brave, stubborn and clever. She’s already half in love with the hero but he let her down and she’s not going to let him forget it. He’s going to have to earn his way back into her heart. Callum had every intention of coming to claim her but a reader finds out that there are serious complications that stopped him. That doesn’t mean he was going to give her up forever – he still loves her, he just needs to make the heroine believe him. Watching the two of them overcome each their own obstacles was an adventure in itself. The action was steady and it put me on the edge of my seat many times, even the final chapter had surprises, adventure, suspense and a ‘wow!’ moment that lead right up until the happy, happy ever after. Ms. McLayne wrote a novel that kept me wide-eyed and curious for most of the story.
I enjoyed meeting most of the secondary characters and many played important roles in helping Maggie and Callum. There were some who were villains but even one of those was more like a victim too. It kind of broke my heart when I found out the truth.
Readers who enjoy seeing heroes and heroines tease and seduce each other until passion overtakes them will find many satisfying scenes to enjoy. There’s no doubt Maggie and Callum are highly attracted to each other. Their love will not be denied – delayed, but not denied.
The dialogue, interaction and actions and descriptions, and the fact that all the main personalities in the book were so fleshed out, really brought this story to life.
I had a lot of fun reading Highland Betrayal and I think it’s going to be a popular historical romance amongst readers. It’s a classic romantic story with a backdrop of danger. I give this one high marks and a solid recommendation. Don’t pass up an opportunity to read this novel; it’s great!

For a book that only has ten chapters it packed a punch. The pace flowed effortlessly from one scene to another. I knew not to blink or I would miss something. The writing style transported me back in time, Fort Clark, Texas-1875. I literally groaned for the heroine, Cristabelle, who was a laundress at Fort Clark. I can’t imagine the back pain or the pain in my hands I’d have from that arduous labor.
This is my second Hebby Roman romance book. I find it interesting that in each book I learned something that I never knew before. It’s rather fun to read a romance book and walk away slightly more educated. The last time I learned something it was about how hard and dirty of a job it was to shear sheep’s wool, since the setting was on a sheep ranch. This time the setting was an Army post. Fort Clark’s purpose was to guard the border. Hebby Roman has a natural skill in writing entertaining romance stories with purpose. This talent is a rare quality trait found in romance books.
The hero, David aka Davie, was a solider in Company C. He brought amusement into the plot. His bravery would earn him a promotion and then his shenanigans would lose him a stripe. One thing for sure was his fondness for Cristabelle. Cristabelle had some emotional conflict issues within herself that she needed to work out before she could accept Davie’s love. Davie knew he loved Cristabelle but was she worth giving up his Army life for? Would she be happy as an Army wife? So much uncertainty.
I found Christabelle: The Christmas Bride to be a wholesome quality romance story that was enriched with well-developed characters that produced an emotionally rewarding love story between Cristabelle and David. Hebby Roman’s writing style has a high caliber of its own.
If you’re looking for an interesting and satisfying plot that will entertain you for a few hours then give this book a try. I’m glad I did.
