Excited children in their Sunday best, diving beneath the Christmas tree in search of their next present is what I think of when I contemplate Christmas.

Children are mercurial little creatures and I was no different. I still remember the agonising wait from 5am (when excitement would wake me up before dawn), until a respectable 7am on Christmas morning which was when we were allowed to open our first present. After that we had to wait until our grandparents arrived. Oh, the anticipation!

My Norwegian husband tells our girls, aged 11 and 7, that he has spared them all that since his culture has the present-opening taking place on Christmas Eve. So, for the sake of a whole twelve hours he can play household hero on December 24th while I prepare the following day’s meal. My sister who lives ten minutes away also married a Norwegian (my husband’s best friend, in fact) so our two families (with 4 kids between us) embrace the two traditions in both our households in the beautiful Macedon Ranges in Victoria, Australia.

We’ve only spent one Christmas in Norway and, yes, it was white! Here in Australia Christmas is usually spent in the heat beneath the gum trees so our first white Christmas was very special. My mother-in-law decorated the living room in my husband’s hometown, Hamar, with hundreds of angels while the children were sleeping, so when they awoke it was a magical moment to see their faces.

Books are always high on the ‘want’ list at Christmas, being a family of writers and readers. Happily, diversity of taste is a family strong point. Last year my 11-year-old was as ecstatic to get the whole Anne of Green Gables series as she was to unwrap The Hunger Games trilogy.

On the subject of books and Christmas, Cressida, the heroine of my last release Lady Lovett’s Little Dilemma, has an increasingly busy Christmas each year as she adds to her nursery. Like her Regency counterparts 200 years ago, she has not the vocabulary or knowledge to have the conversation with her beloved husband as to how to limit their expanding family so as she retreats, physically, he reacts with confusion.

Christmas is, perhaps, the one time she can relax as the focus is not on her but the five children who are allowed to romp beneath the Christmas tree. Poor Cressida. Her journey towards self discovery begins with the shock rumour her husband has found comfort in the arms of his previous mistress leading Cressida to take on the guise of a widow in search of the truth.

This she finds in Mrs Plumb’s House of Ill repute – plus a lot more than she bargained for. During several explorations within the curtained boudoirs where love meets loneliness, Cressida’s latent sensuality is aroused as she learns some surprising things about her husband…and, unexpectedly, about a mystery surrounding a young acquaintance set to make a reluctant marriage to please her ailing mama. It is now that Cressida’s strength of character is tested as she weighs up the risks she must take to secure someone else’s happy ending. It’s a sweet erotic Regency Romance and a complete contrast to my earlier rambunctious erotic Regency, Rake’s Honour.

So, in the spirit of Christmas, I would like to offer one lucky commenter an e-copy of Rake’s Honour. Unlike the characters in Lady Lovett’s Little Dilemma, the hero and heroine of Rake’s Honour – Fanny Brightwell and Felix, Lord Fenton – are fiery and tempestuous. They’re just as well matched as my happily married Lord and Lady Lovett but Fanny is as different from quiet Cressida as is possible and she takes great delight in making Fenton grovel in order to save not just her honour, but his own. Happily, a number of reviewers remarked on an ending that made them ‘laugh out loud!’

Happy Christmas, everyone! I hope it’s a great one!

PhotobucketChristmas is more than just gifts. It is a time when traditions and family bonds are formed. A time when you can forget the stress of the daily life routine and relax and enjoy what you have. I have never been comfortable receiving gifts, especially since my birthday is a week before Christmas the gift giving when I was a child was melded into the two holidays. As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that I feel really good in the role of gift giver. I think this spawns from my role as a nurse and my need to nurture.

As I started this post, I thought about asking what your favorite Christmas traditions were, but as I sat here and typed I realized that my own traditions have changed over the last couple of years. I’ve started to give more, and not in the traditional sense. I’m talking to my community. These are very difficult times. Americans have lost jobs, are homeless, and hungry. I too, struggle, but especially this time of year think how I can give those a chance to garner a bit of holiday cheer.

Now, I donate. Donate to toy drives, donate food/turkeys to food and homeless shelters, and donate coats to the drives that collect coats to those that don’t have them. Especially with those in the Northeast who have been hit hard by Sandy, donations of any kind will be very important this holiday season.

It’s very easy to Google local food banks/shelters in your area. Ask your local Fire stations if they’re doing Toys for Tots. The American Red Cross is taking donations for Sandy relief. So get involved in your community. It’s a tradition that really does make you feel good from the inside out!

I want to thank Marianne and Judy for hosting this blog hop today! If you leave a comment on your favorite holiday tradition, I will draw a random name and you will receive a free e-book of my new release, The Doctor’s Deception. And, I will take it one step further. For every comment I will donate one bag of food to my local food bank.

Thanks for stopping by!

POST-APOCALYPTIC MADNESS!

I’ve been counting down to the Winter Solstice at my blog since Nov. 25th with other romance authors–mostly because I’ve been caught up in writing a post-apocalyptic series. So, Winter Solstice is around the corner, translating into: what did those Pre-Columbians think? Are you ready to survive and thrive because the world is supposed to end? Well, I’ve been working with some fellow authors to ensure readers have something to read (paperbacks) when hiding out after whatever ends the world as we know it on the 21st. Not that the world will end, more like if it ends…So, I thought I’d share some of that life-saving information and some stocking stuffers! And what’s better than a Christmas gift of knowledge?

ARE YOU READY?: KITCHEN MAGIC-INSIDE & OUTSIDE

So, I’m from the Houston area and suffer from hurricanes often. It’s one of those interesting situations where you get the heck out of Dodge early or you dig in and wait–using the BBQ pit for days. Hurricanes rarely relocate your large cast-iron pit. And if you’re a local, you know to keep lighter fluid, charcoal, and matches on hand because…I remember eating what we called Dog Food (canned hamburger hash) after heating it up on the pit after Hurricane Alisha. I’m not into slimy baked beans or standard pork ‘n beans. It’s a slime thing for me. I do eat Ranch Style Beans, refried beans, and the standard beans–kidney beans, pintos, chick peas, butter beans, and field peas. Variety makes life nice, even when the lights are out 3-7 days. So, hurry. Go buy plenty of canned beans to stock that variety in your pantry. Besides, who wants to hydrate and cook dried beans just to eat them? ***I have used a solar oven to cook dried beans. It’s AMAZING. Everyone needs a solar oven. OMG, its initial cost is all you pay for the contraption, and you don’t heat your house up while cooking. Let me see, I baked cornbread, cooked rice, shrimp, sausage, stewed vegetables, etc. But hydrating beans requires water. When you’re in an emergency situation, you need to save your water for drinking. UNLESS…

Dry vs. Canned Beans:

There is one exception to keeping dry beans on hand: bean sprouts. Bean sprouts are the Prepper’s salad and produce section at home. You will need quite a few bags of these little magic beans to turn your windowsill into a garden. I even sprouted popcorn. Not microwave popcorn. I used the seed for use in a hot-air popcorn popper. The only things you should never sprout are tomato seeds and potato seed (the eyes of potatoes). Both are poisonous. So, you might need a bean sprouter lid to make things easier.

Using a Solar Oven:

Now, that said, if you have enough water and can soak your beans through the night, you will be amazed at how they cook in the solar oven with the greenhouse effect. I highly recommend solar ovens. They were invented in the 70s and have been in use around the world in countries where firewood is one of those rare precious things. You know, to cut the tree down or not to cut the tree down…Aye, there’ the rub.

So, I bought a S.O.S oven just because I write futuristic (post-apocalyptic) romance and the scientist in me had to try using one. If you buy the S.O.S oven, everything you need comes with it, including a cookbook, two dark pans with lids, an oven thermometer, and a water purification thermometer. I haven’t tried boiling water to kill what could be in it yet. But one day…The thing to remember is that a solar oven is like a crock pot. It can heat up fast and cook at up to 400 degrees F. I saw my oven’s internal temperature rise to 350 degrees numerous times when I used the reflectors to elevate the heat inside the oven. So you will want to be certain you buy a quality oven with all the parts (and reflectors) to ensure your oven lasts.

A trick for using Solar Ovens:

If a sudden cloud burst sweeps in, you can use a medieval trick. You need an old insulated box (for us 21st-century folk, use an ice chest) packed with an old comforter, towels, or blanket. You want to be able to quickly transfer your unopened covered pot from the oven into the next of cloth and cover with more cloth then close the ice chest. This maintains the inner temperature of the covered pot. And the food will continue to boil/cook!!!

Twenty-something Londoner Natalie Bowen is envied by many, but her personal life is a disaster. Men can’t cope with her career success and Natalie thinks she’ll never find real happiness. When she hears about an exclusive weekend retreat called the Haven, a place that specializes in introducing visitors to pleasures they could never have imagined, she is shocked at the idea—yet unable to resist finding out more. Natalie decides it’s time to put her fears behind her. Once at the Haven, she meets the enigmatic and disciplined Simon, a man who is used to getting what he wants. Natalie may very well have met her match.

Talk about a journey into the unknown!

Natalie is tired of being boring. She wants more zest from her life. She wantss to live a little more. So what’s a girl to do? Go to the Haven, of course. Okay, so maybe I wouldn’t go to the Haven right away, but then again, I’m not Natalie. Still, her journey is interesting.

Interesting or not, I had some problems with this book. One of which is the writing. The overuse of adverbs pushed me right out of the story so many times. I walked away from this book and had a hard time picking it back up. I didn’t feel immersed in Natalie’s world, but rather like I was looking in and most of the time confused by what was going on. I didnt’ feel like I was shown the story, but rather told what was happening.

Another thing that turned me off was the words used. If this is erotica, then ‘viscous milky fluid he gave her’ seems way off. There is a lot of purple prose used. Again, for being labeled as a follow up to a certain other hot book, I didn’t get the idea this book was hot, but rather trying so hard to be hot but not quite making it.

I give Natalie props for experimentation. She wasn’t sure what she liked when she went in to the Haven. Great. Does she figure herself out? Well, you’ll have to read the book for that. No spoilers. But one thing that didn’t necesarily bother me, but might discourage other readers is her lack of protection. I get she’s trying to experiment and experience sex in different ways, but good grief. I hope all the partners were tested at least. No condom use and lots of swapping. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea. She’s also very controlling and this makes her grating on the nerves at times. I wanted to her to loosen up and even in the Haven, she still comes across as being almost too power-hungry.

There is a definite connection between Natalie and Simon, although the romance is lacking. I liked Simon and the way he took control of her. He knew the ways to push her and make her come undone without actually touching her. I enjoyed his parts of the story the most and wanted him to get a larger role. I’d also love to see what happens after the book. Having read extensively in the erotic romance and erotica genres, I’ll admit, this wasn’t my favorite story but it might work for others.

If you’re looking for a hot read that’s heavy on sex, then this might be the read for you.

When reporter Abbie Marshall needs to escape Honduras, a private jet carrying a Hollywood A-lister is her only way out. She has a ride home with Irish actor Jack Winter – notorious womanizer and all round bad boy. Abbie is shaken to the core by Winter’s blazing beauty and provocative mind.

After the plane’s nose-dive into the remote rainforest forces them to fight for survival, Abbie catches tantalizing glimpses of the complicated man behind the image. And the more she sees of him, the more he touches some primal part of her that she is determined to suppress. But after a devastating encounter with Winter’s shadow side, Abbie’s detachment is shattered.

On returning to normal life, Abbie cannot forget what happened, nor ignore the shocking rumours about the star’s private life. Her struggle to make sense of her torment leads straight back to Winter, who is just as obsessed by her. But if they are to have a relationship, Abbie knows she must embrace his hidden desires … and accept her own.

No longer caring about anything but their intoxicating love affair, Abbie is drawn deeper into the dark heart of Winter – and the secret that threatens to destroy everything …

I always enjoy a book that draws you into the action straightaway and that’s whatThe Pleasures of Winter did. Abbie, the main character, is running for her life and just when you think she’s safe, she ends up in a plane crash in the jungle. It’s during the scenes there that Ms. Winters did a great job of setting the stage for the rest of the story. There’s a pull-push quality to the relationship between Jack and Abbie and just when you think you know how the story will play out, they’re whisked back to civilization.

Sometimes I liked the character of Abbie because she came across as the strong journalist she was initially portrayed as, but then at other times she seemed to be at the mercy of everyone else in the story. I liked Jack, even though it was obvious he had a dark side to him. The dialogue was wonderful and very natural sounding and the pace kept me reading. All the secondary characters were interesting too. Although this book was publicized as similar toFifty Shades of Grey (which I must admit I’ve never read), there wasn’t a lot of sex in it but instead lots of tension that led up to those scenes. If you like Chick Lit with kink, this is probably the book for you.

While I don’t think this will be a romance novel to everyone’s liking, if you want to check out a BDSM story with a happy ending than The Pleasures of Winter would probably be a good starting point for you.

In a Faraway Land…

There lived a man who was trapped—his only companions a horde of goblins consumed by their lust for gold. He thought he was lost forever, thought that no one would ever remember he’d been noble.

A Fearless Warrior.

Now he has been thrust into the human world once again, but so much has changed. How can he ever be rid of the darkness after so long in the Shadowlands?

It Starts with Dreams of a Castle…

And a woman who takes his breath away and makes him forget the pain of his past. He knows he must protecet her at all costs. And perhaps in saving her, he can finally learn to love again.

It wasn’t Merlyn’s fault that he had let the anger and pain consume him until he embraced the goblin curse. After years of caring about nothing but finding more gold, Merlyn needs to not only adjust to being human once more, but to the modern ways of humans.

The way Nadine and Merlyn’s stories intertwine made the story entertaining. They may not have ever met one another, but their lives, as well as those around them, seem to all be brought together by one common link: the Goblin curse. Though Merlyn and his family were the only ones to suffer the actual curse, the fact that others had to deal with it both in the past as well as the present added an interesting twist to the story. It made me want to read more, and see if they could discover how much they truly had in common as well as see if they could get past what can possibly destroy their budding relationship.

Nadine’s story was one of tragedy and strength. Nadine was robbed of a loving family, which could have broken her as a child and into her adulthood. Instead of letting this deny her a good future she found the strength, even as a child, to keep hope alive and continue to live her life. I can see how this can be inspirational to many, including Merlyn who needs someone’s strength as well as his own to help him deal with the changes he has to learn to accept.

Merlyn is a man of honor even if he doesn’t believe in it. He shows how there is strength in being a quiet observer and how it can help one grow. He made me want to go find a park bench to sit on just to find out what I can learn from the world around me. While I enjoyed all of the previous stories featuring his family and men in arms, Merlyn has a strength even after such a tragic story that makes him a stand out.

I am not sure if this is the last story of this series, and I am crossing my fingers hoping I can see Merlyn and Nadine again, even if only in my dreams.

For as long as Rae Taylor can remember, she’s felt others’ emotions as if they were her own. With the untimely death of her grandmother, she leaves the city and returns to the quiet town of New Haven, hoping emotions won’t interfere while she mourns her loss.

Gage Archer has also returned home to New Haven and to the pack he left behind. Luke Bainer views Gage as a threat to both his growing alpha position and his attraction to Rae. Developing feelings for a woman outside the pack can be dangerous. Where Gage will do anything to keep Rae safe, Luke has other ideas.

As Rae struggles to control her special talent, no one is aware her gift is linked to a secret. A secret that could destroy Rae and the pack.

A dark twist on this compelling shifter romance from debut author Kamila Bowling. Readers will be captivated with this sensual love story. It grabs you with the first page and won’t let go until the last. It’s a twisted tale of secrets, lust and murder. Can I just say: I loved it and can’t wait for more from this promising new author.

Death brought Rae Taylor back to the town of New Haven. All she wants is to mourn the loss of her Grandmother, the last of her family. Instead, she’s fighting off the unwanted advances of an old friend. Her old friend, Luke, seems to think he has some claim on her. But Rae is more interested in exploring her renewed acquantance with Gage, the boy she once shared a sultry kiss with one long ago summer. And the atmosphere of the town where she spent so many of her childhood summers has changed to one of malevolence. Some of the townsfolk are using intimidation and violence to control the town. And wild wolves are attacking people all over town…including Rae, who is rescued by a mysterious black wolf. She is intrigued by her mysterious protector and the growing bond between them.

Gage Archer left town amid suspicions that he murdered his girlfriend. Now, he’s back to protect the girl he wanted all those years ago. A loyal friend to Luke, Gage walked away from Rae, the girl they both wanted to claim. But Luke has changed and so has Gage. He regrets leaving all those years ago so he’s not running any longer. If Luke want’s Rae then he’ll have to fight Gage for her.

When a string of murders and wolf attacks start back up suspicion turns toward Gage and the black wolf. Either he’s guilty or someone is going to a lot of trouble to make it look like he is. Rae’s not sure what to believe. She just knows there’s a close bond between her, Gage, and her wolf protector.

Luke is a ruthless would-be Alpha who takes what he wants. He uses his job as sherriff to control the town and its women. And now he’s staked a claim on Rae, his old girlfriend. But first he’ll have to turn her against Gage.

Pack of Lies is a dark and twisted tale of passion and intrigue. Passion for love and passion for killing. One is sweet, one is dark. One man is good – wanting only to protect. One man is evil – wanting only to dominate and destroy. Rae’s life is on the line as she decides which man to trust.

I really enjoyed this story with all of its dark edgy passion. Rae was a unique heroine who changed a lot during the story. Boy, did she ever. And Gage was one dreamy hero. Every girl oughta have one just like him. And I loved all those twists and turns the story took with bad guys coming out of the woodwork, surprises and secrets revealed left and right, and one hell of climactic ending that came way too soon. Pack of Lies left me wanting more from this promising new author.

During the holiday season everyone’s thoughys turn to amour. Everyone has an idea of what kind of romantic or sexual encounter they want as a present. No wonder it is the sexiest time of the year. Have a happy, merry, and – best of all – kinky holiday season with this anthology of yule erotica! Wishes are fulfilled from true love to forbidden sexual longings in these stories by Clarice Clique, JP Archer And Lani Rhea, Elizabeth J. Kolodziej, and edited by our own master of erotic romance, Sascha Illyvich!

Cold winter nights are perfect for snuggling up to someone to keep warm, and if you don’t have someone you better find them quick. That is what these stories are all about; they may not love each other just yet, but they sure do enjoy sharing some body heat.

Winter by Clarice Clique

Winter has always been viewed as a time of death before spring, which brings a new beginning. In this historical fiction story the death is not only of the planets, but of the sacrifice that must be made to the gods so they will show favor and make the season less harsh and help in a fruitful bounty of spring. Yet, Therion made a grave mistake this season and instead of choosing a virgin he decides to sacrifice the witch who taunts him with her body and sexual independence. The storyline was entertaining. I especially loved the main heroine. That is because at moments you can see the woman she was forced to be, and other the woman she wants to be. It is clear that what some many consider has proven to be a curse as well. She has seen too much in her life, which has jaded her and it seems that only her prince can offer the light she needs after a cold winter night.

The Ark Hotel: Before the Dawn by JP Archer and Lani Rhea

Angie and Noah’s story really touched a part of me that a story hasn’t in a while. While the previous story in the anthology was hot and spicy, The Ark Hotelcreated that slow burn that I knew would warm the characters during the winter months. Angie’s previous abuse relationship played a large role in this story. I liked that the author started, not during the abuse, but right after Angie decided to stand up for herself and take a chance on her. While Noah did not have a abusive ex-lover, he had his own hardships. Another character I was impressed with was Lizzie. I found myself wondering if she to had her own story to tell, because I would have loved to heard it. This was truly one of those stories I wanted to re-read as soon as I was done.

Demon Protection Plan by Elizabeth J. Kolodziej

When ordered to protect the eccentric Kasidy to ensure she stayed alive long enough to testify against a criminal they have been trying to get for a while, Decland hadn’t realized he would be the one needing the protection. Kasidy’s character has a way of looking at the world that is refreshing yet scary. She lives for the moment which I can honestly say I envy, yet because of who she is she cannot let anyone close to her. That is until she is trapped in a cabin with the delectable Decland. He makes her question not only her ability to keep her panties on, but also her ability to maintain the walls she had erected around her heart to protect herself and anyone who dares to care about her.

While I expected the holidays to play a larger role in this anthology, I enjoyed the cold winter months none the same. All three stories were truly unique to one another each could really stand on their own. This anthology helped to introduce me to some excellent authors that sure do know how to heat a girl’s blood and keep the pages turning.

Lady Elizabella Aldrich receives notice of an inheritance in Padua, Italy. Arriving from England, she discovers another heir lays claim to the castle. An unreasonably handsome Italian rogue stands between her and the castle she’s inherited.

Leonardo Da Mitri never met the noble who included him in his will. But after one look at Lady Eliza he relishes the challenge of defeating the beauty to make the castle his own.

Astonished to learn they must wed and remain married for a year, it soon becomes apparent someone does not want the nuptials to take place. As Eliza fights her growing desire for Leo, he fights for his life. Will he walk away from his inheritance—and Eliza? Or is he willing to risk everything to stay married to the woman who has claimed his heart as hers… to keep?

Lady Elizabeth Godwin has inherited a castle. Though not a wealthy, land-endowed one of her fantasties, it’s hers and Lady Elizabeth is determined to make the best of it. Leonardo Da Mitri’s solicitor informs him he’s been endowed with an Italian castle upon Lord Calendri’s death. Surprised, as he’s not of noble blood, Leo nevertheless decides to follow where his fortune might lay. Both Leo and Lady Elizabeth insist on the solicitor explaining how they can both be in possession of the same castle. What follows are certain conditions that shock and secretly entice them both.

A wonderful historical novella, this story made me laugh, sigh and thoroughly enjoy both Elizabeth and Leo’s adventure. While the language sometimes made me pause – with both the old style of speaking and a few Italian words peppered in neither of these detracted from the story. Both Leo and Elizabeth could be stubborn and difficult, their attraction was undeniable. The spice their relationship and interactions brought to the book really made it sparkle.

Hard core historical readers might find some nit-picks, but I really enjoyed the world, settings and characters. The romance builds slowly but is no less sensual because of that. The author manages to juggle the history elements, different social settings and intertwine an intriguing plot to wrap it up into a wonderful book I thoroughly enjoyed.
