My husband is from the Netherlands, so in addition to celebrating Christmas on December 25th, we also celebrate Sinterklaas at the beginning of the month. It’s a Dutch tradition for children to put their shoes out at night, and in the morning, they’ll find little gifts from Sinterklaas.

One of my favorite treats from this time of year is Speculaas, a spiced gingerbread-type of cookie. I found a delicious recipe to make them at home, and my children and I make them every year. They are so good, I wanted to share a recipe.

Winter will soon arrive in our neck of the woods. Last year it arrived on Christmas Eve, just in time for the traditional White Christmas, with about an inch of pretty white fluff. About seven inches of snow came down just before the New Year.
It was the picture-perfect snowfall, thick flakes coming down with no wind, making the trees in my yard look like something out of a fairy tale (the Dancing Princesses, maybe?). I went outside that night and was instantly transported back to my childhood.
My friends and I used to walk to the movie theater, escorted by one or more of our parents, and I recall quite vividly a magical snowy night when we walked home after the feature. The air was completely still. A couple of inches of snow had freshly fallen. Trees and bushes were decoratively draped in it. Our boots crunched and squeaked in the silent air. The temperature must have been near 30 because I don’t remember being cold at all as I breathed in that uniquely fresh air that’s present only after a snowfall. All around us, in the light of the streetlamps, the snow sparkled and twinkled. It looked as though a rainbow had frozen and sprinkled the snow with colorful crystals. I fancied they were jewels, scattered by a giant’s hand for us to enjoy. (I was about eight or nine then and already a great fan of fairy tales.)
Now, every winter I look forward to a night like that one—a magical, still night with freshly fallen snow sparkling with a multitude of colors. The air always smells fresh, uniquely clean. My boots always crunch and squeak. And I always have to stand for a moment enjoying the fantastical spread of jewels and remembering.

Can an Italian sweatshop worker and an Irish cop fall in love on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in 1894? The answer is a big YES, and once they’re enjoying wedded bliss in their Greenwich Village brownstone, they spend their first Christmas together feasting on her Strufoli! (Italian for honey balls).
In FROM HERE TO FOURTEENTH STREET it’s 1894 on New York’s Lower East Side. Irish cop Tom McGlory and Italian immigrant Vita Caputo fall in love despite their different upbringings. They know their love can survive poverty, hatred, and corruption.
Here’s Vita’s Honey Balls recipe:
When my grandparents came from Naples and landed at Ellis Island in the early 1900s they brought many recipes with them, but only in their heads. No one brought cookbooks or recipes along with their possessions. A favorite Christmas treat is Struffoli, better known as Honey Balls. One Christmas when I was a kid, I watched my grandmother make them and scribbled down the ingredients as she sifted and mixed and baked and drizzled. Here’s an accurate recipe in English!
Ingredients
Dough:
•2 cups flour, plus extra for dusting
•1 large lemon, zested (about 2 teaspoons)
•1/2 large orange, zested (about 2 teaspoons)
•3 tablespoons sugar
•1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
•1/4 teaspoon baking powder
•1/2 stick (2 ounces) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, at room temperature
•3 large eggs
•1 tablespoon white wine, such as pinot grigio
•1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
•Canola oil, for frying
•1 cup honey
•1/2 cup sugar
•1 tablespoon lemon juice
•1 1/2 cups hazelnuts, toasted (see Cook’s Note)
•Vegetable oil cooking spray

•Powdered sugar, for dusting, optional
Directions
For the dough: In the bowl of a food processor, pulse together 2 cups of flour, lemon zest, orange zest, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add the eggs, wine, and vanilla. Pulse until the mixture forms into a ball. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Cut the dough into 4 equal-sized pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece of dough until 1/4-inch thick. Cut each piece of dough into 1/2-inch wide strips. Cut each strip of pastry into 1/2-inch pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a small ball about the size of a hazelnut. Lightly dredge the dough balls in flour, shaking off any excess. In a large heavy-bottomed saucepan, pour enough oil to fill the pan about a third of the way. Heat over medium heat until a deep-frying thermometer inserted in the oil reaches 375 degrees F. (If you don’t have a thermometer a cube of bread will brown in about 3 minutes.). In batches, fry the dough until lightly golden, about 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. (The rested and quartered dough can also be rolled on a floured work surface into 1/2-inch thick logs and cut into equal-sized 1/2-inch pieces. The dough pieces can then be rolled into small balls and fried as above).
In a large saucepan, combine the honey, sugar, and lemon juice over medium heat. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved, about 3 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat. Add the fried dough and hazelnuts and stir until coated in the honey mixture. Allow the mixture to cool in the pan for 2 minutes.
Spray the outside of a small, straight-sided water glass with vegetable oil cooking spray and place in the center of a round platter. Using a large spoon or damp hands, arrange the struffoli and hazelnuts around the glass to form a wreath shape. Drizzle any remaining honey mixture over the struffoli. Allow to set for 2 hours (can be made 1 day in advance). Decorate with sprinkles and dust with powdered sugar, if using. Remove the glass from the center of the platter and serve.
Note: To toast the hazelnuts, arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees F oven until lightly toasted, 8 to 10 minutes. Cool completely before using.
Total Time: 4 hr 12 min
Prep: 1 hr 30 min
Yield: 8 to 10 servings

Since I’m pretty sure that no one young enough to still believe in Santa Clause would read this post I thought I’d be safe with the topic. I remember when my daughter first asked me if there was a Santa Clause, and I’d replied by asking her if she believed in him. When she’d answered yes, I told her that was all that mattered. I knew that eventually she’d find out; though I hadn’t counted on her very own aunt telling her there was no Santa while she was only in first grade.
Well, now her daughter knows there’s no Santa Clause and that mommy and daddy are the ones who buy all those gifts. Funny, but my daughter and I were just talking about it the other day. Alivia is ten and I asked Michelle if she thought it was funny that Alivia still believed in Santa. Low and behold a week later Alivia comes home from school and asks her mom about it. Apparently one of her friends told her there was no Santa. Michelle told Alivia the truth, but asked her not to tell her five-year-old brother. Yeah, we’ll see how long that lasts.
The news that there was no Santa Clause hit Alivia hard. After all she’d firmly believed in him, and the traditions around him. I mean, Ernie the Elf visits us every year right after Thanksgiving. I’m sure her little mind is thinking about the tooth fairy and Easter bunny, too. It was time for her to learn the truth, but a sad time, too. A little of her innocence is gone now.
However, she didn’t miss an opportunity the other day when she told her mom that she wants a hoverboard. Michelle said there was no way she was going to buy her a $300 hoverboard for Christmas so Alivia said, “Fine, I’ll just ask Santa.” Lol
I hope that all of you who celebrate Christmas have a wonderful and safe holiday! Thanks for letting me visit with you today. I hope that you’ll take a moment to check out my next big release, which comes out the end of this month. Pre-order is available at Amazon.

I’ll be frank. The holidays stress me out. While others are hanging mistletoe, I’m busy finding ways to avoid the malls and shopping. The day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, is aptly named in my opinion. Although I love the spirit of Christmas and all it represents, I wish I could dodge the pressure to shop and bake and decorate that come with it.
It hasn’t always been this way
As a child, I felt great joy in the days leading up to Christmas, dreaming of all the wonderful presents I’d find under our tree.
As a young mother, I delighted in holiday shopping, flipped through cookbooks to find the perfect recipe for Christmas breakfast, and crafted countless gifts for my children to present to their teachers. One year, I even bought sparkly mini evergreen trees for my coworkers to display on their desks.
But with three teens, a busy corporate job, and more books coming out in 2017, I truly don’t have time for the annual holiday preparations.
Enter Ebenezer
“Bah, humbug!” I mumble under my breath like Scrooge. “All I want for Christmas is time alone and to write more books. Ahem…preferably, best sellers.”
This is a fantasy I cannot indulge. Not if I want my family to have a Christmas celebration. And I do want that. A lot. So I will endeavor to do the shopping and decorating and baking AND write my next book.

With my first book, Mind Waves, released from The Wild Rose Press Oct. 7, readers have been asking for book two. I’d dearly like to grant their wish. I also need to time to complete edits for my newest manuscript, Charmed By Charlie, which is with Boroughs Publishing.
If your elves don’t build clones, I’d gladly accept a pill allowing the swallower to bypass sleep.
Otherwise, it’s a distinct possibility my family and I will be roasting chestnuts on an open fire with no Christmas dinner in sight.
And that would be ho, ho, ho…horr…not so jolly.

One!River and Daklin find themselves in a race against time, hampered by staggering odds and overwhelming desire. Daklin has one final, desperate chance to prove himself, keep River safe, and save the day. . .
What a wild ride!
I’ve never read anything by Cherry Adair. I’ve heard her name, seen her books around, but never made the jump until now. And, I have to say she’s got mad talent!
The start of this book nearly broke me… the prologue is about the death of Daklin’s brother. Ms. Adair clearly showed the fear and desperation inside Daklin as he rushed, without success, to save his brother. I know it was necessary to give Daklin the impetuous to do whatever it took to get the bad guy, but man, was it crazy emotional.
I loved the heroine in the book, River. She was hell on wheels (or maybe that should say “heels”). Gorgeous, but tough and determined, she was exactly (and the only) the kind of woman Daklin would fall for. I loved so much that his undercover assignment was as a Catholic bishop! Talk about a fly in the ointment for their attraction.
The action was non-stop and the reveal of the bad guy surprising, as well as how crazy he was. Be warned, though, the sex in this book is borderline erotic, there are fairly constant sexual references throughout, and there are touches of BDSM mentioned (in some cases, it’s used for controlling another person). But, Daklin is a rough guy, and it would follow that sex for him would be down and dirty. I’m not usually one to read spicier books, but it absolutely didn’t stop my enjoyment and for those who enjoy it, this will certainly meet your approval.
I understand that this isn’t the first time Ms. Adair has written about T-Flac, but I had no problem following the story and I never felt lost. I’m sure there were things I might have missed that followers of the series will see, and it will certainly make their experience even richer.
All in all, a really good, sexy, action adventure. Recommended!

Fans of the ‘nanny and the boss’ romance trope should give Married for the Boss’s Baby a try because it’s fun and a delightful example of why this theme is so popular. It was a pleasure to read.
Grant, the hero, was in a pickle when I first met him. The poor guy was stressed to the max because he had a liver to deliver via surgery but he couldn’t leave his baby sister but he had to get to the hospital but the nanny was late and his sister, Lily, was fussy and he had no idea what to do! Get the picture? The hero needed an intervention. Thing is, there’s more going on with Grant than being the sudden caregiver to a baby sister. It’s why I liked him as a character; the hero had depth and a humanity about him that appealed to me.
Enter Sara, a woman who has a heart of gold but no financial wealth to speak of. A reader can easily recognize a heroine with a lot of love to give because of how she treats her dad, and how baby Lily quickly accepts her. Sara also has some issues to deal with but they are actually honorable and notable; they have also emotionally traumatized her. Now, she’s afraid to take a chance on feeling affection for anyone. It’s rather sad, and an effective reason for a reader to care for and feel sympathy for, the heroine.
The reason Grant and Sara joined forces is a typical romance book reason but it worked for me. I enjoyed how Ms. Carlisle had her characters navigate their attraction. I also liked the scenes that showcased their medical professionalism in moments of crisis. Some of the items Sara gave Grant during one of those dramatic moments made me giggle because it was so unexpected. They really did make a great team.
I was so happy when Grant finally made a move on Sarah. There was a lot of smoldering early on and they both tried to fight it, but as with all fun romance novels, their capitulation was inevitable. Their loving moments were well written, effective and contributed to their growing relationship; they were mildly spicy.
The reason for their decision and urgency finally arrived but the author sort of glossed over it in favor of showing its effect on both Grant and Sara. It caused a predictable rockiness to the romance but no less effective in getting them where they emotionally needed to be. I actually liked how the author wrote it.
Married for the Boss’s Baby was a fun read. I devoured the story in one sitting and enjoyed every minute of it. I have no problem recommending this book to romance readers. It’s thoroughly engaging.

Katie Cheek’s outgrown the romantic fantasies she had about Ryder when she was fifteen. Katie’s packed their hot night away in a box labeled “fling”—or tried to. But Twilight’s bad boy is the best man in her brother’s wedding. And up-close and personal, Ryder’s impossible to ignore. So Katie can either go into hiding—or surrender to Christmas magic.
A Wedding for Christmas gives readers both giggles and glow. It’s a feel good novel with a message of love and optimism amongst family and friends and the community in which Katie lives, and to which Ryder returns. There’s also a delightful bit of humor and lighthearted banter between the hero and heroine and the sparks between them are explosive.
Ryder is the quintessential bad-boy turned good who warily comes back to a town that judged him as a youth. The chip on his shoulder is pretty large and it’s actually validated by revealed secrets as the story unfolds. Ms. Wilde has imbued her hero with an emotional depth and maturity that appealed to me. I wanted him to have his own, personal happy-ever-after because his hurt and pain became very real to me. Ryder is a well written hero.
Katie was more like bubbles and sunshine. She has a serious side to her, absolutely, but it’s balanced with her fascination with all things Ryder. I liked how her past came to a perfect circle with the hero. I enjoyed watching the progression of her puppy love turning into a solid, mature, adult love. Yet, that unsure girl of the past has turned into a woman who combines sexy with charming enthusiasm and confidence, and she knows who she wants. The days of pillow kissing are past, and knocking Ryder’s socks off is her future – if she can get past her own internal conflicts.
I think the strongest asset of this novel is the dialogue between Katie and Ryder. It brought them to life. Then the miracles that take place with the backdrop of the Christmas season are emotionally magical. I don’t mean magic, magic. I mean, when things seem insurmountable, and the emotional conflict is at its most serious, something happens; people change, there are second chances, hope springs eternal and readers are treated to a warm, fuzzy glow when happiness is realized. Being the well written characters that they are, theirs isn’t a perfect happiness. There’s a bit of grumpiness too, but even that was charming.
A Wedding for Christmas embodies what holiday romances are all about and should not be missed. This novel made me smile and made me feel happy. It’s rich, vibrant and filled with all the best things romance has to offer. Don’t miss it!
