Oona’s character development was amazing. Not only did I get a perfectly clear understanding of why she’d decided to do things that violated her moral code, I had a great deal of sympathy for the reasons that lead to her making these choices. She was a complex and sympathetic person from the first scene to the last one. The only thing better than getting to know her was seeing how she evolved over the course the of the plot.

It would have been helpful to have clarification about which Native American tribe Oona was supposed to have come from. While I understood why some parts of her family tree were so mysterious for her, not knowing about such an important detail about her life was a little disappointing to me as a reader because of how much else I’d been told about other parts of her life that were much less significant to her.

The ending was as poetic as it was satisfying. I’d come to appreciate the protagonist’s sometimes whimsical approach to describing her past and present. Seeing her continue this trend even to the end of the final paragraph was delightful. It was exactly what I’d expect from Oona, and it left me feeling quite pleased with how her conflicts were resolved.

I’d heartily recommend The Autobiography of a Traitor and a Half-Savage to new and longterm fans of the fantasy genre alike.

This was one of the creepiest things I’ve read in ages. It was creepy to think of Helen, the protagonist, living in a crumbling mansion with a child who kept doing alarming things and other staff members who refused to confirm or deny anything about why the boy behaved that way or whether his actions were a sign of something even more horrifying from his past.

What this story needed more than anything was a much more detailed description of the secrets that Herr Lambrecht and the people he employed at the mansion were keeping from Helen. This was by far the most important part of the plot, so I was surprised by how it was handled once she realized there was something very odd about her young charge. I was intrigued by what was shared, but I had enough trouble putting all of the pieces together that I didn’t feel justified in giving this book the higher score I’d originally thought it deserved.

Helen was a likeable main character whom I desperately hoped would be okay once she realized exactly how much danger she was in. I marvelled at all of the hints about her past that poked through as she adjusted to her strange new home and job. It was the sort of position that wouldn’t appeal to most tutors or nannies, so it was nice to know why she was so in need of a job that she overlooked red flags more observant and less desperate employees would have picked up on early on.

If you love the horror genre, give A Human Stain a try.

Later, Nicole would ponder the truth and its illusive nature. She’d realize how many lies people would tell to protect themselves from it. And, worst of all, how many she herself would tell to get at it. She’d always considered herself a truthful person. Yet she’d find herself lying to others, to her fiancé, and even to herself.

She’d wonder if there was such a thing as the actual truth. Or was truth relative, the product of incomplete or faulty memories, or the limitations of the observer? How often was the truth tainted by what an individual wanted, or needed, to believe?

On this bright day in mid-March, Nicole stepped into the United Terminal at LAX and encountered a situation she could hardly believe. It was as if she’d slipped back in time to the previous year when the media was stalking her. This morning, they were massed in a corner of baggage claim. After the initial shock of seeing them, she noticed they weren’t looking in her direction, hadn’t noticed her at all. They were waiting for someone else, someone they expected to come down the escalator from the arrival gates.

A bride wasn’t in his plans . . .

The last thing Marcus, the Duke of Autenberry, expects to see after sleeping off a night’s drunken shenanigans is a woman being auctioned in the village square. Before he can think about the ramifications, he buys her, thinking he’s winning the girl her freedom. Instead, he discovers he’s bought a wife.

A duke wasn’t in hers . . .

Alyse Bell is almost rid of the shackles that bound her in a name-only marriage, but the day her friend promised to purchase her in a wife auction, he vanishes, leaving her to face a mob of unsavory bachelors intent on owning her body and soul. But the appearance of a wicked, wealthy stranger changes her path forever.

The road to ruin . . .

Marcus doesn’t know what to do with the impertinent chit who clearly isn’t duchess material! Insisting their marriage isn’t legitimate, they leave for his estate in Scotland, hoping to devise a plan to get rid of each other. However, on a journey fraught with misadventure, their attraction grows and Marcus realizes he’ll do anything to keep this fiery woman for his own.

I kid you not. The first sentence made me snort. The first chapter established why I found Marcus, the hero, fascinating and how Alyse, the heroine, came to be in the state she was in, and why I’d want to cheer for her. From there the challenge was to finagle getting the two to meet. Challenge met in a most unusual style. The Duke Buys a Bride is a warm, humorous and delightful adventure in love and romance that seduces a reader as surely as Marcus seduces Alyse. Or is that the other way around? I strongly suspect readers are going to have fun finding out.

This third person point of view tale was so well told, I read it in one day. I grinned many times as I watched Marcus do everything he could to stay a bachelor. I admired Alyse’s determination to one day be her own woman and follow her own dreams only to watch them morph into being more than she imagined – a very unusual duchess.

My only question stems from wondering how an English duke can be an English duke if he intends to live in another country. I’m used to reading about them being hands-on, attending Parliament and doing English Duke-y things in the thick of London or in ‘the country’ in order to keep their coffers plump. Marcus is not typical which made me love this book even more.

The slight detour to Clan MacLarin proved most entertaining, and enlightening. I actually liked the rascally laird and certainly that section is very important to the plot. Someday I hope Ms. Jordan might take readers back there to see what Hunt is doing. His nana was a hoot.

Earlier, I mentioned seduction. For readers who look forward to spicy sheet shenanigans, rest assured they are well written, satisfying and quite sexy.

The Duke Buys a Bride is a wonderful read. It’s charming, engaging and full of fun. Marcus and Alyse were a cute couple. The best part was the epilogue because there, the author showed her cleverness. She wrote a delightful wrap-up and a hook for the next book, all in one. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Up in the Alps, a single night can change your life.

Struggling college student and self-taught graphic artist Justin Bennet isn’t the most self-confident guy, but he knows he’s good at two things: snowboarding and sex. Why does Andi, the hot instructor at the Tyrolean ski resort, pretend Justin doesn’t exist?

Justin becomes all but obsessed with the idea of scoring with the young Austrian. Because for all the man’s reserve, he made it quite obvious he likes Justin–at least from the neck down.

When Justin books a private heliboarding trip with Andi as his guide, he thinks he’s one step away from striking gold.

But then the forces of nature take over, trapping the men in a snowstorm, and things get real. What was supposed to be about some freeriding fun and inviting a closeted guy to start exploring his options suddenly becomes about survival–and the hidden truths of the soul.

Trying to beat jet-lag, Justin heads to the hotels spa – Glacier Cave – to start his relaxing holiday. And coming into contact with the most delicious looking man Justin had ever seen just made the holiday even better. Andi, however, is the son of the hotel’s owner and after one steamy glance Andi determinedly ignores Justin and shuts down his every attempt to get into the man’s lederhosen. Unwilling to let the handsome man go, Justin is certain he can get through to Andi.

Told in the first-person perspective this is mostly a fun and lighthearted story that gave me a few twists and turns. Initially, I found the lingering question of “was Andi just deeply closeted – or is he really not interested” totally consumed me. Almost the first third of the book revolves around exactly this and while it definitely kept and held my attention, I found it a little uncomfortable to read because I was never a hundred percent certain that Andi was fully into Justin and not just trying to be polite to a hotel guest. Justin was relentless in his pursuit of Andi and a few times I internally cringed at just how strongly he came across and how very close to the line of pushing too hard Justin came.

That said, once I was positive Andi was into Justin and not feeling harassed I could relax and really enjoy the light-hearted humour of the story. Justin is very strong-willed and determined, once he has Andi in his sights nothing, not even other offers and the chance at a threesome, is going to side-track him. Even though I was never really one hundred percent certain what was going through Andi’s mind – or how he felt about the relentlessness of Justin’s pursuit of him – I did enjoy what I could perceive of Andi’s character. There were a few scenes in the middle of the story where I actually cheered aloud for Andi and oddly, even though the story is in Justin’s perspective in many ways I preferred Andi’s character and wanted HIM to get a happy ending, possibly even more than Justin.

The intimacy between the two men is intense and climactic – all the more for the long, hard road they each had to take to get there. I really enjoyed it and found it deeply satisfying. I also enjoyed the feeling I got while reading the scenes that it was both men doing more than simply sharing their bodies, but making a firm commitment together. I found the resolution between the two men to be deeply satisfying and I was really pleased they’d managed to find their way together.

I feel more traditional readers might find Justin and his determination a little much – or people who are sensitive to overly determined pursuits in the face of rejection. There’s a definite flavor of stalker-ish-ness here and while I feel the author absolutely stayed on the correct side of the line, Justin to my mind at least flirted with that line of going a little too hard and too far. Aside from that this is a fun and lighthearted story and I really enjoyed the sexy scenes when Justin and Andi finally became intimate with each other. This story won’t be for everyone, but I think plenty of people really will enjoy it nevertheless.

He can’t have her.
So he moves in with her…
What could possibly go wrong?

As heir to a chain of luxury hotels, Sean Wyse III always gets what he wants. So when he sees a freeloading roommate taking advantage of his spunky best friend, Molly Brandt, he doesn’t hesitate to step in. He kicks out the roommate…and moves himself in.

Molly loves quality time with Sean, but spending nights with him one wall away threatens to wake the crush she thought she’d gotten over. A crush Sean knows nothing about, which might be a problem…considering how hard Sean’s been working never to think of Molly that way.

Enjoy an Excerpt

Sean took a step back and ran his hand through his hair, pausing when he realized the state of disarray Molly’d left it in. “You messed up my hair,” he accused, his grin telling her that he knew how much she’d liked doing it.

She shook her head, unable to play along. “You’re messing up my mind.”

The half smile fell away, and then Sean was stepping closer, his eyes going serious. “If this is about the dancing, Moll—”

“It’s not. It’s about you and me figuring out how to get past this inconvenient attraction and get back to just being friends.”

Sean sighed, looking relieved. “You’re right. I keep hoping whatever’s going on between us will go away on its own. That if we just ignore it, eventually it will stop being an issue.”

Molly nodded, then shook her head and stepped into Sean’s space. “Or maybe… Okay, I know this is going to sound nuts, and it probably is, but I was talking to Jill inside and…” And this sounded so stupid, she couldn’t believe she was even thinking about suggesting it, but then Sean ducked low, putting his face back into her line of sight and giving her that smile that promised she could tell him anything.

“What is it?”

“Do you ever really wish you could have a doughnut, but you know you shouldn’t? Like you’re trying to cut back on bad carbs or processed sugar, or maybe they were just out of doughnuts when you went to the stand and you figured you’d just wait until you could get one another day, but then all day you think about the doughnut, because you didn’t just have it when you wanted it, so when you finally, finally see a chance to get the doughnut again, you make a really bad decision and buy, like, all the doughnuts they have and eat and eat and eat until you’re sick to your stomach and filled with regret?”

That endearing smile had left Sean’s face, but being Sean, he was taking her question to heart. He rubbed a hand along his jaw and cocked his head to the side. “No. I bust my ass at the gym so I don’t worry about carbs and sugar, and when I want a doughnut, I get one. And I mean, this sounds pretty obnoxious, but if I really want a doughnut and the stand doesn’t have one, I call down to Jerry, and I’ve got one in the next twenty minutes.”

Molly blew out a breath in a silent plea for patience. This guy ran the most successful hotel in the city, could do her taxes in his head, and knew the answer to every Jeopardy question every time they watched the show…and yet he couldn’t see where she was going with this?

“Say it’s a special doughnut and—”

“I’m more of a bagel guy.”

Maybe she should have used an éclair.

“You’re the doughnut, Sean!” she snapped, exasperation wearing her thin. “You are the doughnut I’m craving. The one I keep thinking about when I’m supposed to be thinking of other things. You. And all I was saying is that maybe what we need to do is give in just a little. Have a taste to curb the craving… Before we crack and wake up surrounded by shredded Dunkin’ Donut bags and a bed filled with crumbs.”

Sean had stopped moving. Heck, he looked like he might not even be breathing, he was so still. Except for his eyes, which had gone dark and serious as they searched hers.

“Molly, what kind of a taste are you talking about?” he asked, his voice gone gravelly rough.

She swallowed past the anxious knot in her throat. “A kiss. Not more than a doughnut hole.”

His stare dropped to her mouth. “You’re talking about now? Here?”

She angled her head, taking in the setting. The concrete was cracked, and Dumpsters lined one side of the alley, while fire escapes hung overhead. She looked at someone’s discarded McDonald’s bag and nodded. “Yeah, this is probably perfect for our needs.” At Sean’s raised brow, she explained. “It’s not romantic, so I don’t have to worry about you getting caught up in some princess fantasy. We’re only semiprivate out here. While if we were at home, we’d have zero chance of getting interrupted.”

“Plus, the assortment of sexable surfaces on hand back at your place.”

“I know. Don’t get me started. But here, the atmosphere isn’t really conducive to going too far. You know what I mean?”

The muscle in his jaw bounced, and he met her eyes. “You worried about things going too far?”

He wasn’t? “No. But better safe than sorry, right?”

He moved a step closer, his single slow breath seeming to fill out his chest and broaden his shoulders. “Sure.”

She swallowed hard. “Honestly, it’s probably going to be gross when we finally do it.”

Sean nodded, close enough now for his hands to settle on her hips. “If you say so.”

Her hands met his stomach, her fingers briefly catching the fabric of his shirt before coasting up to rest lightly on his shoulders. “Just a taste,” she whispered, her lungs tight as their eyes met.

“Just enough to satisfy the craving,” he corrected, lowering his mouth to hers so slowly, she knew he was giving her this last chance to back out. Maybe she should have, but after all the years of wondering, being this close to knowing what Sean’s kiss tasted like was something she couldn’t back away from.

And then…contact.

Deep in the nothingness of the Sahara desert, an innovative archaeologist finds a written picture text, the first ever known from the ancient world of Egypt. Linked to many other documents and scrolls found throughout Egypt and the world, this one is different and brings to light a primitive mystery; the arrival and ‘birth’ of the very first beings that would one day be called vampires.

Kesi’s struggles growing into womanhood are easily related to even today as she learns of her place in the world, what it is to be different, coming to terms with her ever maturing body, her first love, and her need for children. But success is not as effortless as she hopes and her life is thrown into a sandstorm of despair. These are her first writings; a journal of youth, growing up hiding underground and what it is to exist as a blood-drinker in a human world.

Sometimes a story comes along that is both memorable and creative in explaining an ancient myth. This one is not only such a story, but it is also filled with characters a reader can’t help but to love. The little gem of a tale is made up of scrolls found by archaeologists but told in the present tense. Set in ancient Egypt, it provides details so rich that readers can easily picture being there. There is a glossary of sorts for unknown Egyptian words.

In a fascinating beginning, a merchant was traveling in the Sahara. From a sandstorm, gods incarnated into human form in a brilliant visual display. This first encounter is well written, the exchange of languages intriguing. These Pet Mer (Sky Friends–aliens) (vampire-like gods) will live underground. Their motivations toward humans are surprising.

Kesi is the lovable protagonist, and reading her story is a pleasure. She is of Giza, 15th Dynasty. She’s a daughter of the gods, half human, half god. She lives underground, and she and her people have a unique arrangement with humans. The humans were born to serve them, but Kesi wants to befriend them, unlike the other children of the gods. This is a set-up for real trouble. When she develops love for a human, what happens next is heart-wrenching.

The suspense is done with skill. The emotional connection between the characters is touching. There’s a sci-fi explanation of the making of “vampires” in Egypt. It’s cool and makes sense. The romantic passion, young love, is irresistible. Then a terrible question comes up and must be answered. What happens when the truth is exposed?

When Kesi leaves her people and witnesses something new and odd, she becomes entranced. It’s so well written that readers can feel what she does, wonder what she does. She dares to do the unknown, and readers discover with her. While explaining vampire legends, there are some real surprises. When Kesi has so many hard questions facing her, readers will wonder how her dilemmas can be solved. More drama is created when Pharaoh gives her an awful, cringe-worthy punishment for something bad she didn’t mean to do.

I’m glad I read this story and recommend it for its story, characters, and presentation.

Only time will tell if Caroline and Lucky’s fiery connection will last longer than a few nights.

Lucky’s character development was handled nicely. To be honest with you, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this character when I first met her. She had a few personality quirks that happen to be pet peeves of mine, so it took me a while to warm up to her sometimes pretty blunt point of view. My opinion of her did become much more positive as I got to know her better and she began to grow as a person, though. It was rewarding to see how she changed and how my response to her as a reader evolved as a result of that.

I found it confusing to keep track of all of the minor characters in this story. Lucky had a complicated work life that took up a lot of her attention. As interesting as I found the case she was researching, I kept mixing up the names and backstories of all of the people involved in it. It would have been nice to focus on a smaller number of clients during the course of this story so I could spend more time thinking about how Lucky spent the rest of her time.

The chemistry between Lucky and Caroline couldn’t have been better. They were suited well for each other in bed in every possible way. As unsure as I was in the beginning about whether or not their fling could ever turn into something more than that, I still kept hoping that they’d find a way to keep meeting up and maybe even find room in their lives for more than just a casual arrangement.

Caroline’s Heart should be read by fans of erotica and mysteries alike.

Bryan and Alexis talk business, with a little flirting.

Taking a moment to compose himself, he followed her down the hall. He always gave himself something of a silent pep talk before a presentation, but that tradition was quickly quashed as his eyes landed on her shapely backside moving a few feet in front of him. There wasn’t much else he could do but take in her magnificent “rear view.”

He inhaled deeply, breathing in her scent. She smelled of citrus and flowers, clean and enticing. The confines of the hallway seemed to magnify the fragrance. The scent was familiar and comforting, like the refreshing scent that hung in the air after a spring rain. He smiled at the thought. He hadn’t spent much time with her yet. But being in her presence seemed to refresh him as well.

They entered her office, where the pastel theme continued. Instead of modern art, though, framed sketches were displayed on the walls of the space.

She gestured to the chair in front of her desk. “Have a seat.”

He did as she walked around to the other side of the desk to claim her own seat. Still admiring the sketches, he asked, “Did you do all of those?”

She nodded. “I did. Sydney, my partner, has some sketches up in her office as well.”

“They’re very impressive. You’re a talented designer.” Bryan’s eyes swept over the sketches once more before returning to her face. “You look skeptical.”

“You did come here to make a pitch, so…” She paused, gave a little shrug of her delicate shoulders. “Let’s just say I’m a little jaded.”

“Trust me. I wouldn’t have complimented you if I didn’t mean it.” He held her gaze a few beats, hoping his expression would communicate his seriousness. If they were in a different setting, he’d be complimenting more than just her skills as a designer.

A ghost of a smile lit her beautiful face. “Thank you.”

He slung the briefcase onto his lap, opening it. “I know you’ve got other things to do, so do you mind if I go ahead with my presentation?”

She shook her head. “I don’t mind. Go right ahead.”

He cleared his throat, loosened the Windsor knot in his tie. “Let me start by telling you that Royal Textiles is the largest, most efficient clothing textile manufacturer in the southeastern United States. What sets us apart from our competitors is our dedication to excellence.”

She nodded. “How so?”

“We don’t make rugs and curtains and tents. Our sole focus is on apparel manufacturing, and we put our absolute best into it. We have only the most state-of-the-art equipment and the most highly trained technicians working on our factory floor.” He handed over the materials he’d brought, two brochures and a full color booklet, for her to peruse. “You should also know that we’ve been honored for quality by both the American Council of Textile Production and the International Apparel Society.”

“I’m impressed.” She looked through the material, addressing him as her eyes scanned the glossy paper. Her expression was difficult to read. “Okay. So tell me about the most recent apparel line your company has acquired a production contract for.”

He straightened in his seat, holding eye contact with her. “We recently started manufacturing J. Cole’s denim line. The first pairs of jeans rolled off the line in the past two weeks.”

Her lips curved, and she appeared impressed. “Sounds good. There isn’t any denim in the Krystal Kouture One line.”

“I know. I’ve seen the designs.”

One perfectly shaped brow lifted. “And how is that? My partner only sent out promotional items to the retailers.”

“I have connections in retail. A friend of a friend let me take a look at your materials.” He leaned back, tenting his fingers. They’d reached the juncture of his pitch where he needed to appear casual but still show that he was serious about closing the deal. “Like I said, I think you have a lot of talent. As a textiles guy, I’m also mindful of how regional weather patterns can affect buyer expectations, especially in women’s wear. You have a good variety of pieces, and they’re sized right as well. I can see the appeal of your line for women all over the country.”

Closing the booklet, she set it aside. Lacing her graceful fingers, she placed her hands on the top of her desk. “I see you’ve done your homework. And I’m impressed with everything you’ve shown me.” She gestured to the stack of paper he’d given her.

A smile crossed his lips, and he clapped his hands together. Reaching into the open briefcase, he started to extract a preliminary agreement. “Wonderful. To get started, all I’ll need is for you to fill this out.”

She blinked a few times. “I’m sorry, I think you misunderstood me. I’m impressed, and everything looks good. But I have to take this up with my partner. I’m not going to make a decision, especially not one as major as this, without speaking to Sydney first.”

He tucked the agreement back inside, snapped the briefcase shut. “I understand completely.” Inside, he could feel the disappointment welling up inside him. He’d expected to win Alexis over with his brilliant presentation and return to the office with a signed agreement. Now, he’d have to go back empty-handed. While that wasn’t the outcome he’d hoped for, he did respect Alexis’s regard for her business partner. They were obviously a tightly knit unit, and he could see that reflected in Alexis’s manner and her words.

“We’ll get back to you with our decision by Monday at the latest.” She let her gaze travel over his upper body, then back to his eyes. “Is that acceptable?”

“That’s fine.” This time, his brow hitched. Was she just checking me out?

He waited until the door closed and peeked around the closest boxes. He didn’t want anyone listening in to his conversation. Call him overly private, but he liked keeping some things to himself.

Oliver whipped his phone from his pocket and snapped a few shots of the statue for future reference. He draped his bag over his shoulder, then hesitated.

Oliver turned and ascended the ladder one more time. He stared into her black eyes. He didn’t know what to say, but he felt he owed her a good-bye of sorts. “I’ll do my best for you to make you beautiful,” he said, then pressed his lips to hers. His mouth tingled and he bit back a moan. He’d never forget the statue. He’d see her again, but still she was one in a million.

Oliver eased away from her and touched his mouth. “Good night, Bia. Until tomorrow.”

He climbed down the ladder and headed out of the stockroom. He’d find the best dress and make her look stunning. Now he had to get her out of his mind so he could focus on his other jobs. He waved at Kratos, who was on the phone, then left the store. His favorite consignment shop tended to have summery dresses in stock and always the one-of-a-kind garments he preferred. If he played his cards right, he’d be able to find what he needed, get the statue dressed, and still make it to his six o’clock appointment before Matilde had a snit fit. Time to hit the stores.
