Former professional football player and coach Duncan “Hatch” Hatcher fumbled his career and marriage. Now divorced and ready to tackle his future, he has an opportunity to redeem himself as coach of his college alma mater’s football team. But how can he turn the team’s losing streak around and keep the secret of his downfall buried when the school agrees to a documentary that will allow a lovely journalist to dig her way into his past…and into his heart?

Olivia Grant’s ex-husband almost wrecked her journalism career while he definitely did a number on her self-esteem. The documentary on Duncan Hatcher is the perfect way to rebuild both. As a freshman in college, she’d had a crush on the senior football hero, but he hadn’t known she existed. She never expects the sparks that fly between them as they work on the project nor the struggles they must face if they both want to win.

Rusty’s going it alone on the family farm, trying to make ends meet and his breeding scheme work. Too bad he’s really a college boy at heart, and having a hard time getting all of the work done all by himself.

When he finds Wayne standing next to a broken down truck on the side of the road, it just seems like someone out there was hearing his prayers. Wayne stays on for room and board and a chance to get his truck fixed up, and as they get to know each other, both Wayne and Rusty decide maybe they don’t have to be single guys anymore.

Rusty is driving back to his farm, hoping to beat the storm blowing in, when he passes a stranger with a broken down truck. Being friendly, Rusty gives Wayne a tow to his farm and they each find perhaps exactly what they were looking for.

This is a deliciously hot, fairly short cowboy romance. While I really enjoyed both Rusty and Wayne’s characters the main thrust of the story is the blossoming romance and steamy intimacy between the two men as they grow ever more fond and attracted to each other. Readers looking for a deeply plotted or complicated story might not find this suits their tastes – but I personally really enjoyed the connection between the two main characters and enjoyed watching them come together and begin to build a strong and meaningful relationship together.

I found the intimacy between the two cowboys hot and descriptive. I also enjoyed the fact that they clearly meshed well together on an emotional level and not just physically. Readers looking for a short but hot cowboy M/M romance story should find this satisfying and enjoyable.

Behind the marble walls and manicured gardens of the Calvianni estate existed dark corners of temptation, torture and triumph…

Whew doggie….this one is hot.

I knew when I picked up this short story that it would scorch. It did. Eric thinks he’s going for business and he’s going to get so much more. He’s the type of guy who uses women and doesn’t think twice about it. It’s sort of nice to see him get the treatment he’s given in return, too.

This is a story of a man who gets it from three other men, so be warned. There is play in every orifice and even toys. It’s a complicated story. How will he respond when he’s treated in the same way he’s treated women before?

Granted, this is a hot story, but I have a few quibbles with it. This story could be great with a little more. I would’ve liked to have had a little more about Eric and his background. I know who he is, but I never really saw him. I don’t really know how he treated people in his past–it’s just hinted at. Adding those details would really round out the story well. Then there’s the editing. It could use a bit more going over from an editor as there are missing words and choppy sentences that messed with the flow of the story.

This is a hot story and it’s pure erotica. It’s also a bit of revenge fantasy in that some might want to see Eric get what he’s due. If you want a hot story that’s got lots of male-male action in a few pages, then this might be the one for you.

Is your purpose only to pay the bills every month, raise a family, and then die? Or is there a bigger purpose? Do you take the responsibility to give something back to the universe at large, or to your source of existence from where you were given this life form? Is your purpose of life to help others?

It becomes very fascinating when you have the paradigm shift from reason to purpose. You suddenly start associating with people who have a similar purpose as you do in your life. You start understanding their purpose and how they are trying to fulfill this purpose, as they go forward in terms of understanding what nature is teaching them.

Now this new DESIRE in you to reach out to people, a feeling of giving to the universe, is actually a DESPERATE FIRE inside of you making you experience this paradigm shift.

Let us look at this newfound desire. It is like the light that you see before entering a tunnel. You only see the light that is required at that point in time. The indications which the universe gives you change in terms of your own physical surroundings. You only need to see the next few steps; you do not see the end of the tunnel. It is important for everyone, no matter which country, area city, or direction you’re coming from, to get into the tunnel. Understand that the process of seeking enlightenment is the same the world over (hence, the tunnel is the same for everyone). You have to come to a point of understanding your own self, with the help of taking small steps, in order to solve the mysteries as challenges that your life gives you. Every time you solve one problem in your life, the mystery of your journey gives you clarity towards the next step. In the process your own purpose starts becoming clearer.

The discovery of this new you will make your thoughts and your actions become completely focused on a different “purpose” of your life. Now you will not just do things out of the blue, but your actions will be more meaningful.

Deeper than the Ocean by Julie Ann Walker – Spotlight and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Julie Ann Walker who is celebrating today’s release of Deeper Than the Ocean, the fourth book in her Deep Six series.

Five Things You Might Not Know About Key West

Hey all you romantic suspense readers out there! Julie Ann Walker here, celebrating the release of the fourth book in my bestselling Deep Six series, DEEPER THAN THE OCEAN, by sharing with you five things you might not know about Key West. (BTW, that’s the setting for this book. And if you haven’t visited, you really should!)

Without further ado, here we go!

1) The place is overrun with chickens, otherwise known as “jungle fowl.” You’ll hear a rooster crow at dawn and see a hen escorting her brood across Duval Street—the main drag which is home to t-shirt stores, bars, and souvenir shops. Chickens on Key West are as common a sight as a Key Lime pie!

2) Natives to the island are known as “Conchs”, pronounced “konks” with a hard K on the end. And if you’re a transplant to Key West and have resided there for seven or more years, you are crowned with the honorary title: Freshwater Conch. (Here you thought a conch was simply a pretty pink shell, right?)

3) Key West is known as “The End of the Road” because it is quite literally the end of Highway 1, considered the southernmost point in the continental U.S. The island is closer to Cuba than it is to Miami!

4) The setting of the sun is a daily celebration. Seriously! Every evening at sunset, crowds gather in Mallory Square to watch that gilded orb sink into the ocean. The instant it disappears, everyone cheers.

5) Judy Blume lives on Key West and is an integral part of the creative community there. I grew up reading Blume’s books and can’t help but feel extra authory anytime I visit her island home!

Ray “Wolf” Roanhorse took one look at Chrissy and knew she was the woman of his dreams. There’s a hitch, however. He screwed things up with her. Big time. Now all she wants is to be friends. He’ll have to be his most charismatic and charming self if he has any hope of changing her mind. And winning her heart.

Christina Szarek knows all about sexy, brooding men like Wolf. She grew up watching her mother fall for – and be broken by – plenty of them. If she had her way, she’d avoid Wolf altogether. But they’re partners in the hunt for the Santa Cristina’s legendary treasure. Avoidance is impossible. And the longer she’s near him, the more he chips away at the walls she’s erected against him.

The danger to Chrissy doesn’t only come from her burgeoning feelings, however. There are mysterious players who would see her silenced – for good. And Wolf, with his wicked grin and spec-ops training, is all that stands between her and a date with death in the deep.

When a group of pesky animals raid Mr. Bagban’s garden, the gardener grows frustrated. Mr. Bagban tries everything to protect his veggie patch, but the animals just keep stealing! Will Mr. Bagban come up with a way to keep the thieving critters out? Find out in this hilarious garden tale!

Sharing is one thing, but how fair is it for a gardener to do all of the work and get none of the reward of eating the vegetables he worked so hard to grow?

The dialogue made me giggle. Much of it happened just after the main character discovered that the animals who lived nearby him had yet again eaten something from his garden that he was planning to harvest himself that same day. He was understandably quite upset about that, and it often showed in the short exclamations of annoyance he made each time it occurred. It was cool to see how much emotion the author packed into those moments. I had exactly what I needed as a reader to empathize with his disappointment.

There was a minor plot hole involving how Mr. Bagban communicated with the hungry animals in his garden that I would have liked to see explained more clearly. The illustrations gave a partial answer. If the story itself had acknowledged it and gone into some detail, I would have happily given a five-star rating to this tale. Everything else about it was well written.

I adored the messages about handling conflict and channeling negative emotions that were included in this story. It was refreshing to see a character openly discuss his problems, admit that they made him angry, and try to find a solution that worked equally well for everyone involved. These are things that even adults struggle with at times. They’re even more difficult for young children who are still learning how to see the world from other points of view and think before they act. Luckily, all of these characters were excellent role models in these areas.

The Veggie Patch Bandits was a delightful read for gardeners of all ages.

Is it the chance of a lifetime or his biggest mistake?

When former hotel manager Alex Kirkland, his sister and their best friends pooled their money for an unusual lottery prize—a historic, dilapidated inn on the Maryland shore—as a last-ditch attempt to escape rotten circumstances, they never expected to win. But they’re all looking for a fresh start and a second chance, so Alex convinces everyone to move in and repair the building in time for the spring wedding season.

Sydney Darrow never planned to return to her hometown. But her family needs her and Sydney can endure anything for 90 days—including making sandwiches and serving coffee with a smile until she returns to her jet-setter career. When her grandma mistakes a handsome customer for the “fiancé” Sydney created when she thought her grandma was on death’s door, well…Sydney will do anything to keep her spirits up during treatment. She can persuade him to keep up the charade for a few months, right?

But when Alex agrees to play along, will they both fall for their own fiction?

I’ve never read a story by Christi Barth before but I would definitely consider reading another. In fact, The Accidental Fiancé is the first book in the series, Love Lottery, and it’s made me curious enough to read book two.

The synopsis says it all. Literally, two hundred and ninety-four pages later there weren’t any additional surprises or plot twists but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the story, I did. My advice is, if the synopsis intrigues you like it did me, then don’t hesitate to give it a try. I’m certainly glad I did. There are times I’m not in the mood for an unpredictable, high adrenaline or complex book. Sometimes it’s nice to relax and read a heartwarming, fluffy story.

The characters were well-developed and relatable. I look forward to meeting them again in the sequel.

The prologue was a bit far-fetched but anything is possible. My interest was captured early on and was easily kept until the last page.

The romance between the hero, Alex, and the heroine, Sydney, was mostly sweet. I appreciated the sense of humor they brought into the story line. Someone not from a small town, such as Alex, had a lot to learn about how fast small town gossip spreads.

I recommend picking this book up to read and I’ll be picking up Book 2: Definitely Not Dating. Enjoy!

Doctor on Call by Alla Shapiro, MD

Doctor on Call: Chernobyl Responder, Jewish Refugee, Radiation Expert by Alla Shapiro, MD
Publisher: Self-Published
Genre: Non-Fiction, Historical, Contemporary

Dr. Alla Shapiro was a first physician-responder to the worst nuclear disaster in history: the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station in Ukraine on April 26, 1986. Information about the explosion was withheld from first responders, who were not given basic supplies, detailed instructions, or protective clothing. Amid an eerie and pervasive silence, Dr. Shapiro treated traumatized children as she tried to protect her family. No protocols were in place because no one had anticipated the consequences of a nuclear accident. From the outset of the disaster, the Soviet government worsened matters by spreading misinformation; and first responders, including Alla, were ordered to partake in the deception of the public.

After years of persistent professional hostility and personal discrimination that she and her family experienced as Jewish citizens of the USSR, four generations of the Shapiro family fled the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. As émigrés, they were each allowed to take no more than 40 pounds of possessions and $90 in cash. Their escape route took them first to Vienna and then to Italy, where they were stranded as stateless persons for six months. Eventually the family received permission to enter the United States.

Motivated by her Chernobyl experiences, Alla Shapiro ultimately became one of the world’s leading experts in the development of medical countermeasures against radiation exposure. From 2003 to 2019, she worked for the FDA on disaster readiness and preparation. Dr. Shapiro issues stern warnings regarding the preparedness―or lack thereof―of America for the current Covid-19 pandemic. Doctor on Call exposes the horrifying truths of Chernobyl and alerts us to the deceptions that undermine our ability to respond to global disasters.

Dr. Alla Shapiro has written a poignant story about being a first responder during the Chernobyl crisis. She has also described her experiences as a Jewish refugee and immigrant to the United States. Readers are treated to an inside look at what really happened, and the writing draws one into the account.

One may be shocked at times to discover the bare facts. It is quite enlightening; though, Dr. Shapiro’s personal comments add depth to this story. Her struggles and the struggles of those she witnessed will tug at hearts.

When the doctor and her family move to the United States, they must get used to a new culture and language. Readers will get a good sense of what this is like. Dr. Shapiro does not let the tragedy at the Chernobyl plant and its aftermath keep her from continuing forth bravely. Her continued work in her field and cooperation with other experts is explained and is sure to bring hope to others. She brings such a personal touch to technical ideas that readers will be made to truly understand. She also makes a connection to the Covid-19 Coronavirus, linking it to modern events.

One will not only learn much from this book but will also probably enjoy doing so.

All Sorrow Can Be Borne by Loren Stephens – Spotlight and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Loren Stephens who is celebrating the recent release of All Sorrows Can Be Borne. Leave a meaningful comment or ask the author a question for a chance to win a copy of the book.

Inspired by true events, ALL SORROWS CAN BE BORNE is the story of Noriko Ito, a Japanese woman faced with unimaginable circumstances that force her to give up her son to save her husband. Set in Hiroshima, Osaka, and the badlands of eastern Montana and spanning the start of World War II to 1982, this breathtaking novel is told primarily in the voice of Noriko, a feisty aspiring actress who fails her audition to enter the Takarazuka Theater Academy. Instead, she takes the “part” of a waitress at a European-style tearoom in Osaka where she meets the mysterious and handsome manager, Ichiro Uchida. They fall in love over music and marry. Soon after Noriko becomes pregnant during their seaside honeymoon, Ichiro is diagnosed with tuberculosis destroying their dreams.

Noriko gives birth to a healthy baby boy, but to give the child a better life, Ichiro convinces her to give the toddler to his older sister and her Japanese-American husband, who live in Montana. Noriko holds on to the belief that this inconceivable sacrifice will lead to her husband’s recovery. What happens next is unexpected and shocking and will affect Noriko for the rest of her life.

Knocking on the door, the tearoom manager asked, “Who’s in there?”

I unlocked the bathroom door. “It’s me. Noriko. I didn’t want you to see me like this, Ichiro.” My face was covered in tears and blotchy from crying. I handed Ichiro today’s newspaper. On the front page was a photograph of Mizuki Abe with the headline, “Newest Junior Star of Takarazuka is Sensational in Cinderella.” I blew my nose and then explained. “Mizuki was my schoolmate. We tried out for the Takarazuka Theater Academy together. She got in and obviously I didn’t. And now look where she is, and look where I am. Still playing the part of a tearoom waitress while Mizuki’s name is up in lights. I should go back to Hiroshima. There’s a small theater company there and, if I apply myself, I can make my way up the ranks. I’ll be a big fish in a little pond instead of a Miss Nobody.”

“Your father is a sushi maker, am I correct?”

“And your point is…?”

“He would appreciate your choice of words, Noriko.”

“Are you making fun of me?”

“Just a little.”

His eyes were so expressive. Fascinating dark eyes that looked sad and strong at the same time. No wonder he never looked directly at me. I might uncover secrets he didn’t want to reveal. Taking my hand for the first time, he said, “Please don’t leave. I look forward to coming to work every day just to see your lovely face.” And then he led me over to the upright piano in the corner of the tearoom. Sitting down at the bench, he asked, “Would you like me to play something for you, Noriko? You have such a sweet speaking voice and such an engaging laugh; I’d love to hear you sing.”

“Do you know ‘You Are My Everything?’”

Ichiro lit a cigarette and rested it on the lip of the ashtray on top of the piano. “It’s the theme song from the American movie The Eddy Duchin Story, isn’t it? The one about the bandleader married to a socialite who dies in childbirth. Tuberculosis, I believe. He’s so heartbroken he abandons his son, but they finally reunite. It’s very sad.”

I agreed, the story was sad.

“Well, let’s give it a try. We’ll use our imaginations.” Taking in the empty tables of the tearoom with his eyes he said, “Imagine this is a Manhattan nightclub. I’m dressed in a tuxedo, and you’re wearing a red silk gown and a diamond necklace I’ve just given you for our first anniversary. Are you ready? Our patrons are holding their breath, waiting for you to begin.” Pointing out the window at a beggar who was pushing a cart loaded with brooms and pails, he said, “See that man. He’s the famous film director George Sidney. This could be your lucky break.”

She had dinner that evening with the children and Sally Wilkes, her employer conspicuously absent.

“Mr. Garrison had to go to New York unexpectedly, and his return has been delayed,” Sally explained.

On a Saturday? Did the man work seven days a week?

Curiosity made her wonder how often Eric Garrison actually made it home to have dinner with his family. As quickly as it came, she pushed the thought aside. It was neither her place, nor her desire, to question such things. “I’m sure it couldn’t be helped,” Haley responded.

“My daddy travels on a big plane a lot,” Brian told her. “I like planes. Do you like planes Miss Haley?”

“I’ve only been on one,” she admitted. “However, once we were off the ground, I found it quite nice.”

“You’ll get to fly a lot now that you’re our nanny,” Winnie added. “We go lots of places in the summer when school is out, and then skiing in the winter.”

She thought back about the clause in her employment contract regarding travel. The paragraph had read two or three trips per year, yet she’d not considered how the trips would come about. “Where will we go first do you think?” she asked.

“Paris actually.” Eric Garrison’s voice filled the room from where he stood in the doorway, his deep baritone sending a shiver up Haley’s spine.

“Paris?’ she repeated in question, turning in her chair to meet his gaze.

“My step-mother has an apartment there, and she’s invited us for the first week of summer vacation.”

Paris. The idea of going someplace so fabulous seemed as foreign as the French language to Haley. She made herself a mental note to purchase an English-to-French dictionary the next time she was in the city.

Eric had no sooner taken his seat at the dinner table when Tess appeared from the kitchen with additional serving bowls, as well as a bottle of wine and three glasses. Again, Haley was reminded of a totally different lifestyle from the one in which she’d been raised.

He poured them each a glass of wine, then raised his glass to inhale the bouquet. “Tell me, Miss Parker, do you speak French?”

Haley gave a slight shake of her head. “Unfortunately, not. My language elective during high school was Spanish. However, I’m a quick learner. If I can find some language books, I should be able to master the most important phrases in no time.”

“I’d be happy to teach you,” he offered. “Assuming I have enough available time before we leave.”

The thought of Eric Garrison teaching her French set Haley’s pulse racing. “I wouldn’t want to put you out. I’m sure I can learn on my own.”

“Comme vous le voulez.” When she met his gaze, he chuckled. “As you wish or, more literally, as you want it.”

A sudden dryness settled in her throat and she reached for her glass of water, taking one sip and then another.

“So, Doodlebug,” Eric asked, turning his attention and thoroughly mesmerizing gaze toward his daughter. “How was school today?”
