Lord Jasper, younger son of a marquess, suffered horrible burns fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. He wears a mask to hide his face from the stares and screams and finds comfort in the shadows. Jasper is an exceptional bounty hunter, so when a woman summons him to her deathbed and asks him to find her runaway daughter before she passes away, he doesn’t refuse. Jasper is close to his quarry when he’s knifed by an assailant. Imagine his surprise when he regains consciousness in the arms of the woman he seeks. On a remote cliff on the sea, Olivia Carlisle calls her five-year-old son in from an approaching storm. But the little boy is more interested in the man he’s found on the trail to their hidden cottage. Olivia fears men and wants nothing more than to leave the injured man where she found him. But his knife wound is severe, and with the approaching storm, she knows leaving him will condemn him to death. As Jasper begins to heal, Olivia acknowledges her attraction to him, even though such emotions terrify her almost as much as returning to London. Jasper must convince her that her only chance at safety is to challenge the man who pursues her. They must travel into the lion’s den—he to face his vulnerability and she to face her worst fears.
I had a suspicion from meeting the hero, Jasper, in previous books of The Survivors series, that I was going to love his story, and I was so right! Draven’s Dozen is a group of soldiers who were survivors of the original thirty man suicide squad who took on dangerous missions with little expectation of returning alive. Jasper’s heroic actions caused part of his face to be burned and scarred, and he now wears a mask to avoid horrifying people he meets. Though he’s nobility, he now makes a living by hiring himself out as a bounty hunter, or a finder of lost things.
Five years ago, Olivia Carlisle fled an arranged engagement to the vile Duke of Withernsea, and no one has been able to track her down. Olivia’s father hires Jasper, sure that if anyone can locate his lost daughter, it’s him. Jasper is almost to Olivia’s door, when an unexpected attack leaves him near to death. Though Olivia’s prior experience has left her with no love for men, her conscience won’t allow her to leave Jasper to perish. She manages to bring him into her cottage and slowly nurse him back to health. Olivia is living (hiding) in a remote location, so while Jasper recovers, his only company is Oliva and her young son, Richard.
I love the forced intimacy between these two wounded people, who have both built up substantial walls for their own protection. Jasper is one of the most honorable of men, and in addition to his physical scars, he is bearing survivor’s guilt. My heart broke for him, and how he decided that he was not worthy of being loved. Olivia suffered trauma at the hands of her fiancé, and made the decision that living anonymously and without wealth was better than being married to a true monster.
Little by little, the walls start to come down, and trust starts to build between this unlikely couple. The attraction between them literally jumps off the pages. I especially enjoyed seeing Olivia, who has never known physical pleasure finally experience it. I loved seeing Jasper feel accepted, and able to show his face to both Olivia and her son.
Jasper convinces Olivia to return home, assuring her of his protection, and she doesn’t doubt him. But she is still officially engaged, and her fiancé has every intention of having her back in his power. There is also another unexpected villain, one who is determined to keep Olivia and Jasper apart. Unmask Me If You Can is a breathtaking and passionate romance that held me captive all the way through. The treachery and uncertainty kept me on the edge of my seat. I adore how Jasper and Olivia manage to find all the acceptance and genuine love they need with each other. The strong writing and heart touching emotion makes Unmask Me If You Can one of my favorite books of this year.

There was so much kindness woven into this book. Originally, I was planning to recommend it to a slightly older age group, but it was so gentle that I decided to include younger readers as well. Every scene was filled with so much warmth that I think it would appeal to preschoolers just as much as it would to older children. This is even more true for kids who like the fantasy genre or spending time out in nature.
While I loved the premise of this one, there wasn’t as much going on with the storyline as I would have preferred to see. Kikko’s adventures could have been summarized in far fewer pages because of how quickly everything happened. Had there been more conflict or the inclusion of a plot twist or two, I would have chosen a much higher rating for this story. It definitely had promise, but it simply didn’t do as much with the ideas explored in it as I would have liked to see.
The animals in this tale had abilities that bears, deer, and other creatures in our world do not. I can’t go into a lot of details about this without giving away spoilers, but I was amused by all of the things they were capable of doing. The descriptions of how they lead their lives in the quiet and remote parts of a forest were as detailed as they were creative.
Anyone who enjoys tea parties should give The Tea Party in the Woods a try.

The world building was really well done. While I’m sure many viewers will be able to figure out quickly what sort of mythical creature is the focus of this story, I’ll avoid referring to it by name in case anyone prefers to be surprised. What I will say is that I loved seeing Mr. Turtledove’s vision of what American society would be like if this creature not only existed but is in the process of being fully integrated into human society. He had some incredibly creative ideas about the logistics of creating everything from furniture to laws that would be fair for both species.
I would have liked to see more time spent developing the conflict. Even with all of the development of the backstory and setting, I finished this tale wishing that the characters could have had bigger problems to wrestle with. The things they worried about were so ordinary that they felt a bit out of place given how wildly different their world was from our own. Had a little more attention been paid to this area,
The ending left me wishing for a sequel. While the main conflict was wrapped up satisfactorily, it hinted at parts of this universe that I’d sure like to see explored in a sequel. There were still plenty of things the main character, Bill, still had to learn about living alongside a species so different from his own. If the author ever decides to revisit Bill’s life, I’d be excited to see what else is happening in it.

This is a most difficult path we’ve chosen to walk. It’s certainly more difficult for me than any of the projects I’ve worked on over several decades. Because it’s so challenging, above all it requires persistence. Persistence means different things to different people, but essentially it boils down to ‘suiting up and showing up,’ as a sports friend says.
‘Suiting up’ means calling yourself a writer and having your tools ready to go, every day. It also means thinking about your current project all the time, having it in the background while you’re showering or eating. ‘Showing up’ means being a writer every day, putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) for at least an hour, more when you can, with a clear set of goals you want to accomplish – number of words, by when, so you’re always measuring yourself against what you want.
When you acknowledge the challenge of the writer’s path, you give yourself to permission to have some suffering with it now and again. Not wallowing in it, as that would bog you down. But when good writers transition to great writers, I think it’s by going inside and pulling meaning out of that suffering.
Others have mentioned something that I think bears underscoring: you must be a fearless and ferocious self-editor. What you can let yourself get attached to is the most perfect version of your manuscript—but nothing short of that is worth being too fond of. Better to slash and burn while under your guidance than being slashed and burned by critics after you publish.
There are a number of courses, mentoring writers and editing software out there to support you in this ruthless task. I encourage you to avail yourself of them. You’ll be amazed how much better your work becomes as you keep paring, eliminating passives, explaining more clearly, strengthening a narrative. One particular program I use identifies ‘sticky’ words which tend to slow down the reading experience. It’s invaluable to have this kind of automated assessment.
Along the same lines, I encourage you to use BETA readers after you get a completed manuscript out. Their input will help you make it a better book. They’ll see things you can’t because you’re too close to it. You might not act on everything they say, but you’ll know about the concerns out there that might affect your future readers.
In addition to writing persistently every day, you can also make it a priority to read and study writing every day. Reading means both for enjoyment and for assessment and instruction, inside and outside your genre. Most important is studying the signature works of masters in your genre, as they’ve already set the bar for everyone coming after. In the world of mysteries, I try and keep up with greats like Elizabeth George, Michael Connelly, Ann Cleeves, Josephine Tey, and Tony Hillerman (my list of faves is actually much longer!).
Then, speaking of studying, making time to learn elements of your craft is most important. I’ve taken several courses at Gotham Writers Workshop and also take online writing courses. There’s never an end to what you want to keep polishing in terms of skills. You’re never done!
Even the masters will tell you what skill they’re working on currently, what they’re dissatisfied with, who they admire who does it better than they do. If you think you might not be up to snuff in character development, for example, look for writing guides and courses on that subject. Try different ones until you find your writing improving in this one area. I find that if I studt while I’m writing, I’m more aware and deliberate and the results are better.
And, finally, don’t get discouraged. Only other writers will understand what compels you, so be in touch with colleagues for feedback and support on a regular basis. This is a noble path, and you can allow yourself to be ennobled by it!

He looked up to see Brother Jeremy leaning on the doorjamb, pale and shaking. The young monk clutched his sandals in one hand and wiped perspiration from his upper lip with the sleeve of his robe. “Father,” he gasped.
“Good Lord, what is it? Here, sit down.” Ambrose pulled a chair across the small office and urged Jeremy into it. He held up his hand to forestall the young man’s story until he’d poured out a glass of water and seen that the threat of fainting had passed.
Jeremy’s hand shook on the water glass. He rested his forehead on the other palm. “I…I…” he started, then, closing his eyes, “Oh, God, this is awful.”
Ambrose pulled his desk chair up close and looked intently at the young man’s face. “Just keep it simple, Jeremy, so I can understand what’s happened.”
“You asked me to pick up that trash bag someone dumped in the orchard, so I went out there with the Toyota this morning….” Here, he lowered his gaze, aware that too much time had elapsed between Ambrose’s request and his taking action. Regret and guilt played around his mouth.
“Yes, you should have been out there Saturday afternoon, but let’s forget that right now. What happened?”
“Some dogs had gotten to it, torn it open…” He gulped, then rushed on. “There was an arm sticking out of the bag.” He closed his eyes again and swallowed hard.
“An arm? Are you certain?”
About the Author: Emma was born in West Virginia and lived there until she was in high school, when her family moved to Pittsburgh. After high school, she went to Boston to go to college. She worked in different small and startup businesses until she moved into a yoga community in Pennsylvania. There, she’s worked on various projects and taught yoga.
She started the Father Ambrose series as a way of pulling together her love of good mystery stories with her deepening appreciation of the real-life magic and mystery of inner work. Father Ambrose has many characteristics in common with the leaders of her community, but his voice is probably hers, or at least what she thinks her voice would be, if she were living inside the parameters of his life.
She’s discovering the compelling nature of writing fiction and the surprises of working with what other writers have called their ‘muse.’ The creative process seems to have its own timetable and logic. The best results seem to come from stilling her own personal voice and allowing that ‘muse’ to speak.

“Ah, their long debates over the phone… It’s just chatting; just people talking. No worries here, my dear.”
Her mother paused and reflected on whether to be more honest with her child, as some school advisors were recommending, or whether to continue shielding her from the world’s problems.
“I don’t want them to come to my school. My friends might stay at home because they’re scared.”
“They won’t,” the mother replied with another smile as she caressed the little girl’s brown hair. “They won’t. Let’s get inside, sweetheart; it’s getting chilly.”
They resided in a fortunately situated neighborhood. Though just two miles from the shore, it was elevated enough to have an unobstructed sea view over the gentle slope of their rocky hill. Before entering the house, Lisa spotted some movement above her head.
“Hey, it’s Reblas!” She waved at their neighbor, who was tranquilly gazing through his telescope, poking out of his dark attic window. “Any shooting princesses today?”
“Why don’t you come over and take a look? It’s a cheesy moon out tonight,” beamed the man. He was recently retired and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life on the island.
“It’s late. Maybe tomorrow,” Lisa’s mother called back.
“’Night, Reblas.”
“Sure thing, Strawberry. It’ll be there tomorrow as well—always waiting for us to look up and admire it!”
The electric shutter on the back door slowly closed after they had passed through. Reblas adjusted his telescope’s lens and angle, observing the horizon, while in the background, concerned voices on the radio discussed the recent riots in Europe and the increasing numbers of boats crossing the Mediterranean Sea from both continents.

It was nice to see how gentle and understanding everyone was with Hannah. She was given the opportunity to pet the dog every day, but none of the adults in her life ever pushed her to do it. They respected the fact that this was something that would be difficult for her even if they didn’t understand why. They were good role models both for adults as well as for kids who might one day make a friend with someone like the main character of this story.
I would have liked to see more time exploring Hannah’s fear of dogs. It seemed to be something that bothered her a lot, so I was surprised by the fact that the narrator didn’t go into detail about when or why it first developed for her. This seemed as thought it should have been something that was mentioned at least once while the main character was figuring out how to react after Sugar went missing.
The ending made me smile. Hannah’s decision to help everyone go looking for Sugar after that pet went missing was a brave one. I was pleased by the fact that she decided to join in so quickly despite how nervous she was around dogs in general. There was also something to be said for the way no one made a fuss over this choice. Hannah was included without a second thought, and her help was appreciated. All of this made the final scene even more poignant than it would have already been.
Hannah and Sugar should be read by anyone who has ever been afraid of something ordinary.

The Cowen family own the local diner and she is attracted to one of the brothers, but there is something strange about the whole family. In her dreams she sees a large wolf and believes this has something to do with her brother’s disappearance.
This is a very good tale of deception, mystery and paranormal. A bit weak in the part where Eva won’t tell Mason what is wrong, I know she’s strong willed but she has an inkling of Mason’s true identity and this should ensure that he will believe her and help her.
Other than the above, the story holds together very well. Every detail was visible to me as I read it, especially the food aspect and the Cowen’s house and land. Good read and very enjoyable story.

The last thing she needed was to hook up with some guy she’d smack headlong into at church the next day.
Simple, right? So how did it all go so very wrong?
Fiona is looking for Mr Right Now – she doesn’t believe in all that romance novel crap and she wanted to be long gone before breakfast options needed to be discussed. When a leather-clad cowboy turned up on a Harley Fiona knew she’d found the man who could help her out for the night. The only problem for Fiona and Wyatt will be keeping to their original rules of no strings and one night….
I really appreciated how, despite the short length of this story, I didn’t feel as a reader that Fiona and Wyatt simply jumped straight into bed. Sure they went on a fast track from meeting, hooking up and heading to the motel room, but there was just enough pacing – for me, at least – to feel and believe in their connection. It was a “Right Now” connection, not anything burning more long-term, but they were both very clearly on the same page in that respect. The sizzle when they touched, the small but gentlemanly gestures Wyatt performed to show his character ran deeper than just a bad-boy biker cowboy, all these things added up to me and helped me feel like this was more than a short wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am style of quick sex story. This also helped me feel far more attached to the characters and care for more than just their one night of passion.
While the twist of Fiona and Wyatt’s one night stand not being confined to one night (and the reasons behind that) weren’t much of a surprise to me, I found this sense of familiarity didn’t bother me or detract from my enjoyment of the story. Fiona and Wyatt were interesting characters and not the two-dimensional cut-outs that they could easily have been (horny, gun-shy, modern woman and bike-loving, complicated cowboy). The author did an excellent job to my mind of making both Fiona and Wyatt appealing and well-suited to each other. I enjoyed watching them try to overcome the complications of being surprised by a previous lover in their present lives and the chemistry between them was thick and believable enough that I was invested in the outcome of their romance.
Fun and sexy, I found this to be a great short story with a light plot and interesting characters.

Aimee knew she’d made a mistake the minute she sat down. The music in the crowded sports bar was too loud, the lighting was too dim, and the air was thick with a mixture of greasy food, sweaty bodies, and desperation. She glanced at her fellow managers from the credit union. These were the people she now called “friends,” not that any of them knew it.
Seated at the round table was “on-the-prowl” Melissa, who sat next to the group’s smart phone addict, just-out-of-college Emily. Good-looking, middle-aged “manwhore” William, was making some moves to grab Emily’s attention for the umpteenth time. He had his sights on the younger Emily while he ignored Melissa’s not so subtle attempts to get his attention. Then there was Mary, who started at the credit union when women had to wear pearls and nylons. Mary was in an ongoing, low argument with Mr. Reed, their “still in the closet” suave CEO.
Watching her coworker’s made Aimee’s chest squeeze. She had no business pretending she wanted to be here, surrounded by people but all alone. Why had she come in the first place? Oh yeah, she was trying to make it back to the human race after the violent deaths of her parents in a mass shooting last year. She ached that she’d never see them again. Why I wrote this book
I was reading one of my favorite Sci-fi romances on my electronic reader after watching the latest’s news about computer hacking. It got me thinking…what if aliens hacked into my reading habits to find someone like me who liked alien romances. Wouldn’t that be a perfect way to find women who might be willing to leaving Earth to find love among the stars…
I envisioned Star Wars meets Pretty women. And that, they say, was that. My story “An Alien Exchange” was born.
