Houdini is the best name for a dust bunny. Those little fluff balls are my favorite characters in all of the Rainshadow and Harmony novels. Deception Cove has been out for a while and I know I’ve read it before, but, I forgot and bought it again. It took me until I was half way through the book before I remembered parts of the story and the light bulb went off. The book was as fascinating and surprising as the first time around so I can claim unequivocally that this book has awesome re-readability.
One thing I simply did not remember was the revelation of the origin of the dust bunnies that inhabit the whole planet. I’m glad I forgot the first time because I got to relive the wonder, amazement and astonishment at what I learned. How Drake figured out how to unlock the secrets was page turning. In fact, this whole book is a page turner. Every chapter brought with it clues as to what it might be that is messing with the water, causing ginormous cockroaches to appear and who ultimately is behind the chaos. Once the body appeared, then things really got interesting. Who wants Alice dead? Why? She’s an orphan, what could she possible know? The heroine finds out part of the truth early on but the rest is shared with readers later and it’s a humdinger.
Drake is like most of Ms. Castle’s heroes – dominant, commanding, icy, and so passionately sexy once they focus on the women they fall in love with, readers might get hot flashes. Unlike some of the heroes in past books, Drake is less overbearing and annoying and more like a partner and protector of Alice. His feelings for her are clear by his actions and how he responds to people about her, then anything he actually says to the heroine. When it comes to her, his body language is very convincing. What a yummy guy.
Another thing that kept the pages turning was the cast of characters. There’s someone that doesn’t ring true, some that do, the kids and their games with the dust bunnies, and then there’s the almost mother-in-law from looney land who has a lot of money and a lot of hate. I thought for sure things would wrap up with her being the culprit but there’s a clever twist. She’s involved but not. You have to read the novel to figure out that kink.
My favorite part about these novels is the happy ever after. Just when you think it’s about to wrap up, the author slides in that extra oomph that makes a reader’s jaw drop and only then does the happy ever after get finished. It’s like eating the last of the best cereal in the world and you’re sad, until you find the secret toy at the bottom. It’s all good but the best is saved for last. That’s what it’s like for me reading a Jayne Castle book. I can count on a great story with a lot of action, suspense, drama, humor, fascinating references to aliens, a different culture and weapons and animal names. And the one other thing that is a constant is the wonderfully sensual, sexy romance that blossoms between, in this case, Drake and Alice. Deception Cove delivers to readers the high standard and quality of writing Ms. Castle is known for. I’m a happy reader and am thrilled to recommend to any fans of Ms. Castle’s who might have missed it the first time around. And, for those that have never read a book in the series, they’re in for a treat because it’s a standalone. So, pick up a copy of Deception Cove and fall in love too.

Need a little amusement in your life? Looking for a quick romance to swoon over? Enjoy mothers embarrassing their daughters? How about families that love each other so much they go overboard and cause problems by pulling off over the top stunts in pursuit of protection of their loved ones? Readers get all that in more in this little gem by Ms. Kyle and Ms. Carter. Yes, Wanting a Mate has some sexy hotness within its pages but this story is just plain fun to read. I practically had a smile plastered on my face throughout most of the book. It made me happy.
First I laughed at the term, Mr. Buick, then I giggled at the antics of Chloe’s mom, and just adored the way the heroine was open and accepting of everything about the hero, Holt. I liked that he was a big, bad, scary dude that no one messed with except Chloe. She had no fear of him. It’s that openness and enthusiasm for life that I found charming about their relationship. Holt loved her for who she was, and she him. There were no preconceptions or miscommunications. I think some of that might have been Chloe’s mom’s influence. She wanted grandbabies in the worst way and her support of her daughter’s willingness to mate with a shifter might have made the heroine more open to the possibility than most. Her mom reminded me of a 60s love guru – peace, love, and all that. To top it all off, her mom showed up in the most unexpected places and it gave me fits of giggles. I’ve read many a story about a manipulative parent but Choe’s mom broke the mold.
Wanting a Mate is a crowd pleaser; it really is. It’s quirky, lighthearted, and optimistic, and the sexy shenanigans between Holt and Chloe were well written and entertaining scenes. Mating is a growly, sweaty and sensual business but the authors still managed to imbue those passion filled moments with humor and charm. This is such an awesome story even though it moves at a fast clip. It’s not deep, but it’s huge on appeal and the relationship between the hero and heroine is engaging. I’m a satisfied reader.

What I appreciated the most about the main character was that he made intelligent decisions. They weren’t always decisions that I would have made in those particular situations, but I completely understood why Mitchell thought they were good ones. His thought processes were always logical. That is something that I really appreciate in a story!
The plot jumped among so many different times and places that I lost count of them all. In certain scenes it was confusing to keep track of when and where Mitchell was now because it all shifted so often and so rapidly. While I really liked seeing how this storytelling technique revealed certain facets of his character, it would have been easier to keep up with his latest setting if the narrator had been able to spend a little more time transitioning between them.
Imagine standing on the brink of a historical event and watching it unfold. I’ve often wished I had the ability to do that. The descriptions of what it felt like for Mitchell to experience things that happened long before he was born mesmerized me almost as much as the narrator’s explanation of how people like him can potentially affect the course of history. These passages were by far my favourite ones in this book.
Amber Prelude kept me on my toes. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys time travel tales.

There weren’t any points when I was eager to move on to the next scene because all of them were so important.
The cast of characters was a little too large for something this size. While I liked all of the characters as individuals, there were times when it was a little confusing to keep track of what everyone was doing because of the short, fast-paced nature of this tale. It would have been helpful to know more about a smaller number of people.
One of the things I enjoyed the most about the plot was how the science fiction elements were included. They didn’t show up right away, so I briefly wondered how and when they would arrive. I was pleased by what Ms. Buckley did with them, though, and was fascinated by her explanation of how everything worked. It’s hard to discuss this without giving away spoilers, but it was well done.
While this story is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone work. I had no trouble figuring out what was going on even though I’ve only read some of the earlier episodes so far.

Reviewed by VerbenaShess Amadi patrols villages on the edge of the veld, keeping people safe from magicians. Magic spreads like a contagious and fatal disease, but Shess is an Immune. So when she finds a man who’s infected, it doesn’t matter how handsome he is, not when his face shows the Mark that signifies magic. She draws her knife.
A short brutal fight ends with a kiss that’s equally ruthless, and not short at all. Then the magician, Ryard, lets her go, claiming he’s in that village to protect people too. Shess doesn’t trust a word out of his sensuous mouth, but when they’re both targeted by a common enemy, she has no choice but to escape with him.
Ryard knows she’s the worst possible person for him, because his death is just what she needs to return to grace. She’s not patrolling border villages for fun. But his touch won’t infect her, even if it has other devastating effects. And whether they’re hiding inside a baobab tree or cooling off in a waterhole, an explosive attraction may be the most dangerous thing either of them will fight—or be defeated by.
After her big screw up, Shess is on a mission to regain her status as a respected Immune. Her job is to hunt and destroy Magicians, and protect any more humans from becoming infected. Falling for the enemy was never in her plans.
After getting an unexpected tip from one of the villagers that a Magician had recently been spotted going into a hut, Shess prepares to confront, capture, and kill the man before he can infect anyone else. When the dwelling owner demands she leave his property, she quickly renders him unconscious, then moves inside. It doesn’t take long to discover her quarry. If she had any doubts about him being a Magician before, they quickly dispel when she sees the indicative marking on his face.

Her skills are a bit rusty and before she knows it, the man has her pinned to the ground, her life literally within his hands as the tips of his fingers close around her throat. This wasn’t how Shess imagined things turning out. She had not only misjudged her opponent, she’d let down her guard, which allowed him to get the drop on her. That mistake would cost her dearly.
Ryard didn’t have time to mash words or wit with an Immune. Unlike many of his kind, he truly cared about the wellbeing of humans. He certainly didn’t want to infect anyone. Sneaking into his uncle’s hut during the day had been foolish, he knew that. But it couldn’t be helped. A coven of Magicians lay in wait just beyond the village walls. Unfortunately, his presence hadn’t gone unseen. Now he had an Immune to deal with. Talk about bad luck. Her skills were decent enough, but he had more important matters to attend to. The group of Magician’s hanging around the outskirts of the village posed a bigger threat than the woman before him.
As much as he’d rather secure her aid in dealing with a possible Magician invasion, it seems she’s Hell bent on fighting instead. While he must admit, he certainly admires her skill; he doesn’t have time to play around. After a quick tussle, he moves in for the kill. It should be easy. With his hand wrapped around her throat, his fingers itching to close even tighter and cut off her air, he does something that surprises them both.
Shess is desperate to get back into her boss’ good graces. She has a lot to atone for. At first, Ryard seems to present the perfect opportunity for her to do so. Even when the opportunity presents itself for her to end his life, she can’t do it. Shess isn’t sure why—and she knows she’s just digging her hole on Malleus’ crap list even deeper—but Shess starts to rethink her previous attitude about all Magicians. As the book progresses, both Shess and Ryard begin to see things differently. While Ryard accepts his feelings for Shess much quicker than she does for him, both begin to open their heart and look beyond what they’ve been told and taught.
Marked by You quickly piqued my interest and I found myself eager to see what happened next. I thoroughly enjoyed how Shess and Ryard start out as mortal enemies, but both are forced to take a good hard look at their own biases and opinions and see past the category they’ve each been placed in. Had Shess acted on her trained impulses, she would have missed out on what Ryard has to offer. And had Ryard chosen to kill Shess at their first meeting, the whole village would have suffered. Separate, neither has the ability to deal with the threat posed right outside the village walls. Together, they’re able to use their skills to accomplish what needs to be done.
In most cases, Magicians don’t care who they infect. A simple touch is all it takes and most are more than happy to share their misfortune, knowing it’s a death sentence one way or another. Immunes have no sympathy for Magicians. Once infected, they must be killed. Both Ryard and Shess defy all that they know because their hearts tell them each has so much more to offer.
Over all, I enjoyed the story. Ms. Perera has penned some truly interesting characters. Her definition of magicians and how they spread their “disease” is definitely different than anything I’ve read before. I like her creativity and ability to think outside the box. Nice work, Ms. Perera. I’ll certainly watch for other titles from this author.
Think you know what a magician is? Think again. Marked by You offers a whole new perspective of the world of magic and what it means. If you’re like me and want your sexy hero and kick-butt heroine, then rest assured, Ms. Perera doesn’t disappoint. Marked by You offers everything you’d expect to find in a steamy romance, plus a whole lot more.

It’s been his life’s work to save people, and he isn’t sure he can stand by and watch an innocent child die when he might be able to help. What starts as a simple arrangement quickly turns into something more as Xonos and Victoria grow closer. It isn’t long before she realizes that she yearns for his touch and she wants so much more from him than he may be willing to give. Love was never mentioned when they struck their bargain, but now she’ll settle for nothing less.
This is a melt-your-heart kind of story because the impetus for the plot is a mother’s passionate pursuit of trying to find a cure for her little girl. The author invested a lot of time into showing a reader just how precious and special the heroine’s daughter, Evie, is. It presented the perfect platform for two total strangers coming together to form a family. The depth of emotions between mother and child was well documented and well written.
That being the case, it’s not a huge surprise that the alien doctor, Xonos sees that past the pain of a desperate woman and instead realizes that the person he has before him is a woman of strength, courage and who possesses a deep capacity for love. But, can she love an alien? That is the question.
I really enjoyed this short story because it touched my emotions and made me feel. Granted, Xonos was almost too perfect in what he was willing to do and what he did do for the two new females in his life. Every obstacle was steamrolled over and in a way, the hero came off as an alien knight in shining armor – the conquering hero who doesn’t use a sword but a stethoscope and science to save the day. Once I realized that, I just relaxed and allowed myself to be entertained by a book that embodies the best of romance. The focus is on the people – their trials, their sacrifices, their hopes and dreams and the hope of a better tomorrow. It all works.
My favorite part is when Victoria sort of had to teach Xonos how to do a few things. I found that really sexy and a turn-on. She might have started off blushing but ended up screaming with delight. More than once. For a change, I was really happy when the hero and heroine burnt up the sheets. It wasn’t all thrusting lust, but fireworks of love.
Victoria and the Alien Doctor was incredibly romantic. It’s a story that makes a reader feel good. If you are having a rough day and need a break from stress and the frenetic demands of life, then this is a sweet book to take a short break with. I’m happy I read it.

I wish all self-published books were as well done as Can’t Bear to Hide. Not only was the editing perfect but the story, the writing, the romance and car chases and action all came together for a wonderful reading experience. I practically devoured the book in one sitting.
First person point of view is hard to pull off sometimes but I loved reading the story from Raine’s perspective. She was so fascinating! I mean, she makes these great pop culture references that sometime falls flat with other characters in the book and she has to deal with a dud audience, and other times it works and I could share in her giggles and humor. Then, when she deals with stress, I could relate to her grandiose fantasies on how to finagle a way out, but understood her acceptance of the restrictions of reality. Even with reality, she got a few good zings on the bad guys. I got the biggest kick out of the paper towel dispenser reference. Even the Top Gun scene was really cool. And all of this is explored through her internal dialogue. The heroine’s mind is such a trip. The one thing that stood out is her feelings for the hero, Dax. The words the author used to describe her love for him fits the definition of romance to a T. I could feel her love, her devotion, her belief that she’s the luckiest woman on the face of the earth because Dax loved her. And because of that certainty, she had the strength and determination to fight the bad guys every step of the way.
This story focused on Raine but Dax is no slouch. Even though I never got into his head, the author used his dialogue and actions to get across any point that needed to be made. He is her mate and even when she comes clean about a secret that she’d been keeping from him, his reaction was everything I could have wished. No silly over the top reaction but an acceptance that she’s human, that everyone makes mistakes and it was the past. How he chose to express that to her proved to me his devotion and that was enough to make me swoon. Dax is an awesome hero.
As for the conflict, it was very much external. There was so much going on and that sleazy weasel, in my estimation, should have been punished. I was not happy that it looked and sounded like he was going to get away with being such a jerk but I guess there were bigger, meaner and nastier thugs to deal with. One of the pieces of trash was from the heroine’s past. I know that the author sort of addressed the issue a bit; werebear marriages are not the same as human marriages, but I kind of hoped there would have been a more permanent solution to her ex. Call me bloodthirsty but after finding out what he did to her? She and Dax showed remarkable restraint. I wanted her to at LEAST get an official human divorce. Raine might, only the author knows, but that bugged me that it wasn’t done in this story. Then again there was Gregs – talk about a twist! I give Ms. Red two thumbs up for what she did with him. I count it as another high point in the book.
I’m recent to fandom of Ms. Red, but every book I’ve read of hers leaves me wanting more and more. I feel like a true romance junkie, and Can’t Bear to Hide was my latest fix. I can’t get enough of her were-bears, the world she’s created and the romances that occur within it. Paranormal romance readers can’t go wrong when reading stories by Ms. Red. They’re that good.
