Groaning Ghosts
Ghosts are scary! Not laundry scary, but still pretty damn scary. I also find them utterly fascinating. I love that thrill of hearing ghostly tales, it gets my adrenalin pumping and I always feel the need to look over my shoulder.

There was only one time that I wanted nothing to do with the ghostly realm and that was when my family decided to move from Toronto to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. That alone was scary, especially for a city girl, but we moved us into a house whose original owners had passed away in the house…both in the master bedroom! YIKES!

Of course, we didn’t learn of that until we spoke to some locals, though by that point we knew something wasn’t right. We had already heard thumps coming from my parents’ room when we were all downstairs and the tap in the kitchen would turn on by itself.

Freaky!

By far, the spookiest event happened when I was living in the house by myself.

After a day of work, I went home and while making dinner I heard a couple of loud thumps. I brushed it off as the traditional groans of an old house. Later, I was watching a bit of TV and my little yapper, Peppy, walked to the bottom of the stairs just off the living room and looked up like there was someone there. I took a quick look and saw nothing then went back to my show, chalking it up the odd behaviour to bad eyesight as she was getting on in years.

By eleven o’clock, I was ready for bed. I completed my nightly ritual, and then headed up stairs. My German shepherd, Sarah, zoomed up in front of me, while Peppy followed behind. When I reached, the top Sarah was just sitting at the top standing next to my bedroom door. She just sat there, ears perked up, staring past me down the hall. When Peppy finally joined us, she stopped in her tracks next to Sarah, and stared at the same spot. I encouraged them to follow, but neither budged. I even tried grabbing Sarah’s collar but she put on the brakes and then ducked into my room making herself at home on my bed.

I didn’t make a big deal of the creepy feeling I suddenly had and carried on my way. By the time I reached my parents’ room, I had goose bumps on my arms and that creepy feeling, like that some…thing…one, was watching from inside the room. I didn’t see anything threatening, but I did get the feeling that I wasn’t wanted, so I got out of there…fast. I very quickly walked back to my room, closed the door, got into bed and pulled up the covers. Because everyone knows, your covers protect you from ghost. *queue eye roll*

The next morning, the door to my parents’ room was closed. I certainly didn’t close it; there was no way I was reaching in that room to pull a door closed. At the time, I wondered who did; I also wondered what the heck went on in there. Really? All this paranormal activity was happening in a bedroom. What else went on in there! Knitting classes. Sheesh!

It did leave me wondering if desire and love followed us into death. And after what I experienced, I’m going to say…Hell yeah it does.

Now that I write erotic romance, my mind goes into over-drive with the kinky possibilities. What could two ghosts or souls, get up to without having bodies to do it in? A little multiple action? Maybe they had their silk scarves and paddles ready to go. Or, maybe, they were simple folk who wanted to get down and dirty with the classic cowgirl? The possibilities are endless. Maybe the better question should be what couldn’t they do!

Those lucky ghosts.

Halloween Time Memories
Hi, I am Charity Parkerson and I am the author of 19 books including 11 Amazon best-sellers. I am also co-host of The Melissa Craig and Charity Parkerson show. If you’d like to check out any of those, you can read about them here: http://www.charityparkerson.com/ and I have a blog http://charity-thesinners.blogspot.com/ but I thought we’d have some fun today.

October is my favorite month, and I thought it might be fun to share a memory from our childhood (or adulthood) about Halloween. There are no rules. It can be funny or sweet, doesn’t matter. As an extra incentive, I will be giving away a $5.00 Amazon gift card to one randomly drawn commenter along with a few Smashwords coupons for some of my books. Don’t forget to add your email address to your comment so I’ll know where to find you.

I will kick things off…

When I was young we lived way out in the woods. There were a total of 4 houses within walking distance, we knew everyone who lived in those houses, and 3 of them were relatives. Each year, my sister and I would dress up in our (usually homemade costumes), get our pillowcases, and walk to all 4 houses. Our first stop would always be my Aunt Effie’s house. Now Aunt Effie was easily 100 years old, and seeing us in our costumes was always the highlight of her year. Each year she made a special batch of cornbread for us. We would knock on her door, and yell Trick-or-Trick then she would scoop out the cornbread and dump it in our bags NO ZIPLOC OR ANYTHING!! This is why we went there first! We would smile and say our thanks, before running down the road, and shaking our bags out in the ditch before moving on to the candy. 🙂

As awful as that sounds, it made her happy to give us that cornbread and it made up happy to see her excited so it worked out for everyone. Now it’s your turn, what is your favorite Halloween memory?

From her cheating boyfriend to her dead father and cold, judgmental mother, Daly knows she can’t trust others to be there when it counts. This cynicism begins to melt away when she meets Kashi, a light-hearted charmer from India, who decides he cares too much to let her fade into the background of her own life. After a series of false starts, their quirky romance carries them to India, where Daly must win the approval of Kashi’s family in order to seal their “forever.”

Meanwhile, Laine struggles to cope with the pain of early widowhood, fleeing into the pages of her well-worn library and emerging only to perform her duties as a social worker at the crisis pregnancy center. Although her daughter wants nothing more than to work as an artist, Laine doesn’t know how to redirect Daly to a more suitable profession without further damaging their tenuous relationship.

Can Laine look past her pain to learn from an unlikely mentor? Has Daly finally found someone whom she can trust? Will the women recognize their common bonds before the relationship is broken beyond repair?

“Torn Together,” Emlyn Chand’s first sojourn into Literary/Women’s Fiction, illustrates how our similarities often drive us apart.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this book, which is a good thing, I think.  I didn’t have any preconceived notions and simply accepted it for what it was, not what I wanted it to be.

Full of emotion, and sure to make you laugh and cry, Torn Together is truly a book about a journey.  Though the blurb makes it sound as though we follow two women, this is really Daly’s story.  Her mother, Laine, figures into it, certainly, but it’s only as a secondary character.  It’s Daly who matters and who we become completely involved with.

Ms. Chand is a talented author who writes with feeling and description.  I became immersed in the story immediately, and had no problem completely connecting with the characters.  I admit to being a little annoyed with Daly in the beginning, and thought she was a little overly emotional, and did some things many women wouldn’t (like accepting a ride home from a man she really didn’t even know), but she was a real character. So was Kashi. What a wonderful man: full of life, joy and love.  Almost too good to be true, but the perfect person for Daly.  I loved seeing how he drew her out and made her a better person.

That I was so involved with these characters, from the most important to the least, is what made this book both an engrossing read and a difficult one.  In truth, it didn’t end the way I would have liked but I understand why Ms. Chand wrote what she did.  This was, as noted, a journey for Daly, and in order for it to complete, for the wounds to heal and the ends to be tied, there was no other ending for this story.  I won’t say I was happy, but I will say I understood and that I laughed, cried and loved right along with the characters. For many readers, the ending will be exactly right.  This is an author with true talent and one I hope to read again.

Liz Fairchild is through with relationships. Widowed in her twenties, now divorced halfway through her forties, it’s time to live life for herself. No man need apply. With the proceeds from her divorce settlement—and business advice from an unexpected source—she opens an art gallery in Northwest Portland, trades her McMansion on the Columbia River for an apartment above her gallery and looks forward to her new, independent life.

Everything is working out. She thinks.

Then Collins, a sculptor who claims to have only one name, walks into her gallery. He’s tall, rugged and way younger than she is. He says he’s looking for a gallery to represent him in Portland and, unwilling to take no for an answer to anything, bulldozes his way into her life—and her bed.

But Liz hesitates. She senses that Collins is not exactly who—or what—he seems. What’s the mysterious business he disappears to conduct? And does it have a connection with why he came into her gallery?

And which would hurt the most—falling for him or losing him?

Romance novel authors are in many ways, pioneers. They are not afraid to tackle delicate issues like relationships in which the woman is older than the man. Beginning Again is definitely not the first romance novel in which the heroine is older than the hero, but for me it was the first one featuring a heroine that is way past her early forties.

Liz Fairchild made two wrong choices in her life about men. First, she married young and before she turned thirty she was widow. After that she married a man who, just before her forty-sixth birthday and after fifteen years of marriage, decides to come out of the closet and her life. What one might expect in this situation is that Liz would be one mean, man hating lady. But no, she is the complete opposite. Aware that she continuously makes mistakes in men, she focuses her energy into an art gallery business. And before the grand opening she meets Collins, who is in his late thirties, a lawyer turn sculptor, and they start an affair.

Both Liz and Collins are great characters. Liz is not a bitter middle aged woman, but instead a very strong and brave lady. Collins is also interesting and although his intentions were not completely honorable at first, at the end he turns out to be a really great guy. This is a short and sweet romance novel and it has one component that I sometimes miss from romance stories and that is the courtship. Liz and Collins are actually going on dates, they are enjoying each other’s company, and in the process they are falling in love. All this was really nicely described. Another great thing that I love in Beginning Again is Liz’s sexual awakening, and the message behind it; that is never too late to have a great sexual life and to enjoy sex.

Unfortunately there are also two things that made me give a lower rating to this story. The first is in the realm of illogicality. Liz was supposed to know who Collins was, but when he walked through the door of her gallery she was clueless. He is a sculptor whose work was scattered in different public locations around the town. While starting an art business it seems really silly that she did not do her homework before opening the gallery. The second is in the realm of responsible adult behavior. Liz and Collins shortly after they meet have unprotected sex. In the era of all different STDs, I prefer characters having protected sex, no matter what.

All in all I really enjoyed Beginning Again, because it was an easy read that made my gray autumn day a little bit less gray.

Dixie wanted out of the daily rut and a night to reconnect with her husband. What she got went far beyond her wildest dreams. Who knew a Tuesday night could be so white hot?

Some wishes really do come true. Pearls and a hot evening of unexpected surprises is just what Dixie is about to experience.

Those of us that are married often wonder just how much our husbands really listen to what we are saying. They make non-committal noises, change the channel and we are often left to our own fantasies between the pages of a book. Our main character Dixie in Make Me is in the same fix. She is having a crappy day and all of a sudden there is a present waiting for her that will change her day completely. Am I going to tell you what it is? Heck no. Why spoil the suspense? Suffice it to say that these seventeen short pages are filled with many thrills and spankable chills. Delicious.

Overall, the book was a fast lunch break read that I devoured like a bar of dark chocolate. Dixie was a character I could relate to and when her wishes came true, I found myself rooting for her completely. Zeke was a hunk of a hubby that actually listened to his wife’s secret desires and put them all out there on the table, or ottoman as the scene dictates. The sex scenes ranged from spanking to bondage and anal play with toys and were very hot.

There were only a couple downsides. First, it’s a shame the publisher didn’t create a cover that reflects the wonderful story inside. And, the dialog was awkward in a few places during some of the sex scenes, but didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book. In fact, I will be looking for more from Ms. Slayer.

Overall, the book was a satisfying read. If you like a book that will fit into a quick break in your day, then this one ought to leave you buzzing from a nice kinky interlude.

In a world where a werecat virus has changed society, Roan McKichan, a born infected and ex-cop, works as a private detective trying to solve crimes involving other infecteds.

Until recently, Roan was ahead of the curve when it came to reining in the lion that lives inside him. Now his control is slipping at the worst possible times. A new drug has hit the streets—one that triggers unscheduled changes in infected users. Street hustler Holden Krause gets attacked by one of his clients, then is surprised to find himself involved in an unwanted, unexpected relationship. And a serial killer begins targeting infecteds in their cat form—something that’s 100 percent legal.

To stop the murders, Roan has to work outside the law. But his newfound thirst for violence makes him worry he might be more like the killer than he thought, and his reluctance to talk about it with his husband, Dylan, puts an extra strain on their relationship. So Roan isn’t just fighting the killer and struggling with his mutating virus… he’s trying to save himself.

I get the impression that Ms. Speed loves to blow expectations and assumptions right out of the water because Infected: Lesser Evils does exactly that. The format is different, the ending is different and the players are juggled, jiggled and tested beyond endurance. In short, the whole reading experience is an exercise in amazement, thrills, chills and astounded disbelief at some of the things that happen. To say this book gripped my attention from the suspense is an understatement. I was taken hostage. I had this almost insane need to know what happens next, who it was going to happen to and who, if anyone, would survive. Talk about classic drama! I couldn’t put the book down.

Expect to see most of the usual crew in this novel. The new characters need to be wearing red shirts because every one seems to be a target of something foul and hate-filled, even if not all of them die, they should have. But that’s my inner vigilante showing.

Poor Roan is inundated with all things bizarre. Readers will not be disappointed in his latest adventures. There’s the classic Roan sense of humor, the sometimes self-destructive behavior, his love for Dylan and his missing of his first husband, Paris. But there’s something new introduced too – hope and fear. I am not going to tell readers what inspired which, that pleasure will come from reading the book.

There’s a new conflict that is drug induced. I get the feeling this is only the tip of the iceberg and I don’t believe Roan is going to succeed in making a dent in it’s existence. It’s a hard pill to swallow – which is the only pill that is. (inside pun for fans of the series). Then there is the horrific cat-killer case that really disturbed me. I actually felt for the female cougar – she showed signs of being present or connected with her human side just a little bit. I wonder if other readers caught that?

And Holden! Poor Holden. Getting more interesting by the book, Holden. That man is totally indescribable. He’s hot, snarky, secretive, deadly and a really great sidekick for Roan. But when the author put Scott and Holden in the same room, things really got interesting. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Speed is going to do with those two. Hopefully something because the possibilities of great emotional conflict are abundant.

Speaking of emotional conflict – wow. Dylan and Roan have had their moments but Ms. Speed really got into their heads this time with some truly direct zingers that affected my feelings. I’m worried about Roan. In fact I’m frantic! Ms. Speed did not have the case wrap-ups come about the way she has in the past and the ending left me stunned. I’m in denial and I kept talking to the book like it would make a difference. With one chapter, Ms. Speed has guaranteed the next book to be an auto-buy. No fan of the series, who adores it as much as I do, will be left unaffected by this novel. There will be a long line of rabid fans waiting for the next book, I guarantee it. Is it too much to ask that the next book comes out in time for Christmas?

Once again, Infected: Lesser Evils includes plenty of gritty action, tough talk, fights, bites and blood. There are bad cops and good cops, a church with a bizarre offer and the best part, more fun with the hockey players. Grey, Tank and the gang are some of the most fun additions to this series. Ms. Speed had a stroke of genius when she created them. They provided many chuckles, snickers and guffaws throughout and I’m going to miss Tank. He’s awesome. They all are, really.

Infected: Lesser Evils is a must buy. It’s simply amazing and totally action-packed with conflict, revelations and excitement. There is some downtime where readers get a bit more insight into each character. As each book in the series progresses, everyone who populates it grows, changes and becomes more fully formed. It’s a great series and I recommend it highly.

When I was young, I devoured every ghost story I could, but I’d never come across any real ones. They were strictly fantasy. After the story I tell here, I’ve had a couple of more experiences, but today, I wanted to share my first!

Have you ever encountered a ghost in your wanderings? I have…but the first one wasn’t the usual human type spirit.

On a frigid night, I was sleeping with my Army ROTC cadets from West Texas A & M on the rocky ground in Palo Duro Canyon. But not really sleeping.

The lumpy, rocky ground, the cold, the sounds in the night, the breeze stirring over the cliffs, the thought that rattlesnakes, or tarantulas, or scorpions seeking heat would find their way into my sleeping bag—all kept me awake. I stared at the sky that stretched forever. The Texas sky does, you know. In other places, mountains and trees and buildings might break up the sky, but not out there. Not in the vast wilderness that was the Panhandle of Texas.

The stars sparkled across the dark sky like jewels twinkling in the night. And I was frustrated with myself for not being able to sleep, knowing we had to run up and down the hills in the morning to search for clues on an orienteering course.

Sometime during that night, I finally drifted off, but then heard the sound of horses running, stampeding in our direction. They snorted and whinnied and the sound was frightening.

I recalled deer running through our friends’ tent when we camped off an island in our boat in a lake in California when I was a kid. They don’t go around, I thought. The horses will run straight through us and trample us to death. I tried to wake my sister who was sleeping in a bag next to me. She grumbled at me to leave her alone, and I watched the others in the dark. No one heard the noise but me.

I lay back down, hoping that the horses would skirt around us. I realized the pounding of hooves didn’t shake the ground like it should have. Maybe they were too far away. And then, they moved off in the distance, fading until they were gone. I lay awake for a long time, unable to get over how close we could have been to being trampled, fearing their return. That they’d switch back and come this way again.

Finally, I was able to sleep and before I knew it, we were sitting at a campfire, cold, achy, eating breakfast. I asked about the wild horses. Our cadre said there could be. Sure. But no one had heard anything last night.

Years later, I wanted to write about the wild horses for a magazine, only when I began to research them, I learned others had heard the ghost ponies in the dead of the night. I sat slack-jawed reading the accounts. Ghost ponies? For years, I had believed they were real. The sound of their running, snorts, whinnies were real. It happened.

But they were whispers of the past–of soldiers running Indian ponies off the cliffs in an attempt to keep the gathered tribes from fighting back. Without their horses, the tribes could no longer be mobile. They could no longer mount any campaigns.

The horses were terrified and were driven to their deaths. And now, they live in the canyon forever, a memory of past deeds, a remembrance of their past life.

What if you could change one mistake you made when you were young?

With the help of one well-intentioned best friend and one bumbling psychic, Tensley gets a “do-over.” One simple change, and she suddenly goes from being a corporate executive to a stripper dancing nearly naked on a stage under a spotlight.

Tensley’s high school boyfriend Max has gone from teenage bad boy to a driven police detective with a lot to prove. When he sees his first love dancing in the strip club he’s assigned to investigate, he’s torn between getting her as far away from the place as he can and needing her help as a club insider. There are only two things he knows for sure – she’s stirring up feelings he thought he’d buried long ago and a relationship with a stripper/police informant would be career suicide.

Tensley’s falling all over again for the man who broke her heart years ago. Now that history seems to be repeating itself, she wants a do-over of her do-over! But what she doesn’t know is that life and love have a way of taking their own surprising turns. And sometimes what you think is your worst mistake might not be a mistake at all.

Sarcasm at its best. What happens when you get a do over, and make a sarcastic answer? Wind up in a heap of trouble, that’s what! Well, who would have thought that the do over would actually come true! Certainly not Tensley. If she knew what was going to happen, she would have come up with a much better do over option…..

Tensley is a woman down on her luck. She’s had a string of bad relationships, and there’s the one that got away in the back of her mind. With the do over option, she could get a chance to make things go differently, and she definitely does, but not without consequence. Tensley is thrown into a life not her own, and is now facing the wrath of her sarcastic words, her wish, that do over. Oh boy! This could turn out rather….interesting!

Max is the man Tensley can’t stop thinking about. And, to be honest, he can’t stop thinking about her. By a chance encounter, this high school couple reunites once again, in a life Tensley never imagined possible.

Throw in a mix of a bad boss, life altering events, and a love that just won’t fade, Careful What You Kiss For is delightful, funny and intriguing. I love the spin on this second chance romance. I rooted for Tensley and Mas, even though I wasn’t completely fond of Tensley in the beginning, she definitely grew on me.

The secondary characters are quirky. Tensley’s best friend, Kate, is in the midst of the trouble, too, and she helps Tensley sort out this mess.

This novel dazzles. If you love a bit of paranormal, second chance stories, and plenty of humor to go around, why not give Careful What you Kiss For a shot?

With parents who own a Vegas strip club, elementary school teacher Sara Piermont has always steered clear of kinky. Now she’s ready to sow her own wild oats and give in to the sexual fantasies taunting her. Her cousin’s bachelorette weekend at an all-inclusive dude ranch seems the perfect place to let her hair down. And Dane Dumen is the rugged cowboy she has set her sights on for a weekend of uninhibited passion.

Dane loves to walk on the wild side, and sexy Sarah is the perfect muse for a fantasy weekend filled with restraints and other naughty things. Though he’s never stepped over the line between a fling and commitment, Sarah proves to be a lure he can’t resist. Dane quickly finds he’s playing with fire and has to decide…rein in his heart or risk a permanent brand.

Sara’s first impression was that Dane is one sexy stud, and the horse isn’t too bad either. Yes, Dane is just what the doctor ordered. A sexy cowboy to help Sara experiment with all her kinky secrets for the weekend before starting her new life.

One word can explain Dane:  yum. Most women have had a fantasy about a raunchy cowboy at one time or another and I am sure he would look like Dane. Not only are the looks excellent, but he has a personality to match. Even if his and Sara’s relationship is a brief fling, it is clear that he cares about her well-being and happiness. He is the type of man any girl can see herself falling in love with; I know I did and I did not even get to meet the guy. Well at least not physically, because in my mind I was Sara and was begging to be tied to the bed.

The relationship development in this courtship was right on point. Both parties knew what they wanted and how they wanted to get it. It displayed the type of relationship you expect from two adults who know who they are. Even though Sara was stepping out of her comfort zone, she still had an air of confidence that helped to move these characters and the story forward. I was so enthralled by the story that it seemed as if I’d only just started reading it, and then it was over. I would definitely re-read this story and recommend it to anyone looking to saddle up with a hot cowboy.
