When Katie receives a call from Courtney with bad news, she immediately flies to Seattle to be with her. Dusty goes in search of Frank to see about righting this terrible wrong. Upon discovering Katie can’t go back but he can, Dusty eagerly confronts their past, but quickly finds out it’s not as easy as he thought. Getting Katie to fall for him all over again is a challenge he didn’t expect. Finding out the identity of Frank was even more surprising.

There are problems inherent with a time travel story. First and foremost you don’t want to tamper with history . . . you never know what is going to happen. Secondly, if the time jumps are not too far from the character’s current day, it can seem very confusing as to where they are (current or time-jump). Most time-travel I’ve read has their characters jump very far into the past or into the future to take care of most of these problems. Not this one. Not only are the time jumps into recent past (with 20 years or so), but the characters go back into their own timelines. . . multiple times!

So, that prepares you for the initial confusion. Not only does Dusty return to a time in his life where he first meets his wife (and therefore has to attract her . . . again!), but he ends up having to do this several times.

At stake is the life of his wife’s best friend, Courtney. Dusty would do anything for his wife, Katie, including going back in time to change events for a “happily ever after” for everyone involved. When he gets the opportunity courtesy of “Frank”, the mysterious man who sent Katie on a time travel mission years before, Dusty jumps at it.

Despite not having a solid plan, and having to try multiple times, Dusty seems to enjoy some of his time back in college. He gets to enjoy meeting and wooing his (now) wife. Because he is married to her, they tend to jump into bed rather quickly. This is definitely the source of heat in this novel. There is no shortage of steamy interludes.

To eliminate confusing you in the review, I’ll just let you know, there are plenty of other hookups in this story. Plenty of descriptions of college partying. Plenty of raucous college life. However, the hottest and most detailed descriptions are the relationship between Dustin and Katie.

This isn’t an easy book to read. I found myself re-reading passages and highlighting things so that I could co back and check who was whom and who was doing what. Having said that, this is definitely the epitome of a “happily ever after”. It was satisfying in that respect, and well worth the (literary) ride. Readers who are familiar with the Twin Cities and the University of Minnesota may also find a unique connection to the story (as this is where Dusty and Katie went to school – and therefore the time travel takes place there).

I did not enjoy the actual conclusion of the story. Well, I should say, upon first reading, I did not enjoy the conclusion of the story. The upside to this is – as time passed, I found that the resolution was a little easier to understand and did give a unique flavor to the story.

So – in all, I have to give Dustin’s Turn a big thumbs up. It isn’t easy to read, and will make you think about it even when you aren’t actively reading it. But aren’t those qualities you truly enjoy in a book?

The Sexiest Part of Autumn is Wrapped in Fatigues and Honor
By
Angel Payne
Darker nights with chimney smoke in the air. Starbucks pumpkin lattes. A huge selection of naughty costume stuff at Party City. The return of “Vampire Diaries.”

There are lots of reasons to embrace Autumn as a sexy season, even for a die-hard Summer-Lover like yours truly. (Hey, I live in Southern California. You can’t walk on Huntington Beach in the middle of August and NOT like Summer, if you know what I mean!)

But the best and sexiest fall season date is 11-11. You got it. Veterans Day.

Woodrow Wilson declared the first Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, with the purpose to “be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory…” In 1954, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day, so as to make us all remember what kind of sacrifices have been made for the freedoms we enjoy.

I have to be honest: before this year, I walked through the world with a pretty blasé attitude about this holiday. But as I ramped up the background research for Mark Moore, my hero in Permanent Marker, then did some prelim notes for a future book featuring a Navy SEAL, I constantly realized how deep in the sand my head was really stuck. I was floored, humbled and moved to tears by the things our servicemen and women give up on a daily basis just so we can have the amazing things we take for granted in our lives. Yeah, things like those Starbucks lattes, those sexy fishnets, even the books I have the freedom and the opportunity to write.

But there are the other things they give up, too. The really hard stuff. Nightly hugs from their kids. The very birth of their kids. Waking up to a kiss from their lover. Being able to even touch their lover. Birthday parties. Weddings. Funerals. Holidays. Dates that can never be replaced. Memories they’ll never have.

To keep OUR lives safe. To protect and to serve ALL of us.

You can’t do sexy better than that.

This November 11th, let’s all try to give a little sexy back. Thank your local veteran. I don’t care what war they served in, or to what capacity, or whether they’re male or female. Buy them that pumpkin latte. Hell, if you’re an exhibitionist like me, give ‘em a peek at those fishnets.

Beware of Tall, Dark and Creepy Men at Halloween
Just in time for Halloween and as a writer of horror and nonfiction ghost books, I thought to introduce you to a creepy being you would not want to meet in a dark alley. The Slender Man is an urban legend of a mythical creature often depicted as a tall, thin figure wearing a black suit and a blank face and purported to have been in existence for centuries. Believers tie his appearances with many other legends around the world, including; Fear Dubh (or, The Dark Man) in Scotland, the Dutch Takkenmann (Branch Man), and the German legend of Der Großmann or Der Grosse Mann (the Tall Man). According to the legend, he can stretch or shorten his arms at will and has tentacle-like appendages protruding from his back. Depending on interpretations, this creature is not unlike the men in black UFO stories. He can cause memory loss, insomnia, paranoia, coughing fits (nicknamed “slender sickness”), make photograph/video distortions, and can teleport at will. Where he comes from is as much a mystery as what he wants. All that is known is that there is evidence of him existing for far longer than one would expect. Those who see him often wind up missing or worse, their mutilated bodies are impaled upon a tree, their organs removed, and then replaced in a systematic way. Sightings of this creature have been seen in many places around the world, including the United States. Earliest argued reference to the legend is within the cave paintings found in the Serr da Capivara National Park, Northeast of Brazil, dating from as far back as 9000 BC. A strangely elongated character leading a child by the hand, but there is no reference to the extra appendages. Another like Slender man is Der Großmann, German for “The Great Man,” is often translated as The Tall Man, too. The Tall man also abducts children, just like the Slender Man is supposed to.

The story goes that those who have seen him are frequently found to be maniacally writing strange messages, and drawing mad scribbles of a dark, faceless figure. It is advised that one stops investigating too much, otherwise will find that you become the subject of unwanted interest. There is even a mock documentary in vogue of “Blair Witch” you can see at Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysgQ9spsphk&feature=player_embedded.

Slender Man has inspired an ongoing series of amateur adventure games titled “Chzo Mythos.” Published by Ben ‘Yahtzee’ Croshaw in 2003, one of the main villains is called Cabadath. It is also referred to as “Tall Man.” Making his first in-game appearance in Trilby’s Notes, the character in the third installment is a tall, thin man dressed in a long, black, high-collared coat with tails that reach to the floor and having a blank face.

Other popular culture characters may be based on the idea of this being. Like the horror film called “The Tall Man,” that came out in 2012: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1658837/. Interviewed by Wizard magazine, Dr Octopus creator Stan lee claimed he remembered a story his Romanian-born mother Celia told him, about a man with “many boneless arms.” That inspiration created the distinctive tentacle harness used by Dr Octopus. In the Phantasm movie series, the recurring character of the Tall Man shows an obvious physical resemblance to the move humanoid appearances of the Slender Man. Similarly, the character of the Reverend Henry Kane in Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III is also thought to be modeled on the Slender Man. The television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer featured an episode entitled Hush. In this episode, a series of creatures known as The Gentlemen stole the voices of the population of Sunnydale, rendering everyone in the town unable to speak. In appearance, these fiends in the episode resembled tall figures the Slender Man. Another are beings called the Silence in two Dr. Who episodes from last season, “The Impossible Astronaut” and “Day of the Moon.”

But there’s no Slender/Tall Man. Still, just in case I am wrong, if you see a extremely tall, thin man dressed all in black not far from a children’s playground, maybe you should take heed. Especially before you forget. . .

Leave a comment and tell us about a legendary creature that scares you and be entered into a drawing for a download of Spectre Nightmares and Visitations.

Paintings, canyons and a grandmother with plans of her own…it’s got to be a Carolyn Brown book!

There are cowboy books, then there are Carolyn Brown cowboy books. The writing flows so well and the descriptions are so rich, it’s like being there. I’ve never been to the canyons of the Midwest, but I’d sure like to go if they look the way Ms. Brown has described them. The characters are equally interesting. This book has more focus on Creed and Sage rather than the family, but that’s okay. I liked getting to know them without having so many other characters to keep track of. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to see the family dynamic, but also nice to take a breather, too.

There are a couple of slow spots in the book. The way Sage’s creative process is described is great, but might not be for all readers. Some might not want the level of detail, but it’s not a detraction. I loved how Grandma threw Sage and Creed together. As much as the “pushed together” trope has been used, in this case, this might have been the only way these two would’ve gotten together. It’s so good, too.

If you want a book with a little miscommunication, some arguing, emotional baggage, and hot loving, then this might be the book for you.

Kylie Jordan struggles to piece her damaged life back together following the senseless death of her sister at the hands of a drunk driver. She spearheads a grief support group at New Hope Church to ease the pain, and tends to the roadside cross placed in her sister’s memory. Mason Bennett yearns to make sense of the reckless actions that stole his brother’s life, as well as the life of an innocent victim. His pain leads him to New Hope Church–and Kylie Jordan. Kylie and Mason’s lives are woven together by a single, irrevocable moment in time. When the past is revealed, will their faith–and love–sustain them, or will Kylie’s fragile trust be forever shattered?

Kylie Jordan, a social worker, struggles to mend her broken life after the death of her sister a year earlier. The pregnant nurse was coming home from work when she was broad-sided by a drunk driver. Faith lingered on for three days, but the driver of the other car was killed instantly. Kylie erected a white cross where the accident occurred, and she passes it each time she goes to the grief support group she leads at her church.

Mason Bennett also lost a family member. His brother Braden died a year earlier when his out of control car hit another vehicle. Mason was a passenger and is haunted by guilt. He was sober and he should have prevented his brother from getting behind the wheel. Life hasn’t been easy for Mason, but he’s decided to attend a grief support group to see if that will help. He meets Kylie in the parking lot and instantly finds her appearance and manner appealing. After the meeting he lingers, helps her straighten the meeting room, then asks her out for ice cream.

As the days pass, Kylie and Mason find themselves enjoying one another’s companionship the first social enjoyment for either in a year. Mason is a civil engineer, and Kylie has a plan to construct a bridge over the creek near the church, then landscape the area with flowers and benches. She asks Mason if he’d like to help. Only when they’ve finished the project and have extra plants to use does he finally connect the lonely white cross with the name Faith written on it with Kylie. It seems both their lives are woven together by a tragic incident. Will their faith be the catalyst to begin the rebuilding process? Can they turn tragedy into hope?

Ms. Manners has penned a moving short story of faith, love and hope. While it’s hard to develop characters with any degree of depth in such a short piece, Manners has done a credible job. I enjoyed Wounded Faith very much.

Can a broken heart forgive, when the flesh can’t forget?

The last thing Frankie expects to find lurking in a pile of innocent—looking birthday cards is a letter from her estranged husband—the man who broke her heart and threw away their marriage for a night of drunken extra-marital sex. And the last thing she needs is to revisit those feelings of hurt and betrayal brought back by his words of apology and regret. After everything she’s been through, is it too much to ask to be left alone to try and build a new, independent life for herself?

Apparently it is. As letter after letter falls on her doormat, and the beautiful, eloquent words contained therein slip through her tightly constructed defenses, Frankie becomes a jumble of mixed emotions and desperate desire. Rage, sorrow, revenge and lust mix to make an explosive cocktail when Frankie and Mark find themselves face—to—face for the first time since the split.

The sound of a breaking heart can sometimes be so loud you can’t hear the truth!

Francesca’s world has been rocked, shattered, broken into a million tiny pieces. She is no longer living, she is simply existing, throwing herself into her work, scurrying away from her friend’s good intentions and barely looking after herself. Why? Because ‘he’ cheated on her.

I really, really enjoyed Love, Interrupted for several reasons. First the writing was lovely; elegant, rich and sensitive. The characters were wholly believable and certainly had me investing in them, and the theme – betrayal – was really well handled. It was realistic, the emotions eloquently portrayed, and the complex twists and turns of a heart, and head, in pain was beautifully put onto the page.

Francesca’s agony was tangible, as was her bitterness and confusion. My heartstrings actually tugged reading her story, and I completely understood why her friends, best friend in particular, had to take a stand. The flashbacks were hot and soul wrenching. They made me feel she really had lost the best guy ever!

Mark, when he finally appears, is everything she remembers him to be. I don’t want to give any plot details away, but suffice to say as a reader I was not disappointed in the least.

Ms Black is a new author for me and I will eagerly be on the look out for more of her books. Love, Interrupted is definitely a read I would recommend because of how totally the author had me rooting for the characters and how she didn’t shy away from tackling a complex range of emotions that could have gone wrong without the proper amount of thought and skill. Great read!

A misguided plan and a bachelor auction lead to an estranged couple rediscovering a one-in-a-million kind of love.

Every woman wants Michael Blake. Smart, handsome, sexy, he built Eagle’s Nest into the hottest ski resort north of Park City, Utah. Now Michael is up for sale. In conjunction with a charity bachelor auction, he’s donated a week of his time to one determined bidder.

That bidder will be Katherine Blake. Time is running out, so her plan must succeed. She doesn’t require Michael rekindle the one-of-a-kind love that led to their marriage. He needn’t atone for the mistakes that led to their divorce. All he need do is renovate the gingerbread home they bought together…and one other secret thing. One tiny, astoundingly beautiful yet impossibly awful thing. And with the help of her friends and her willful Grandpa Homer—if Homer will stop picking up women long enough to help—Kat is going to see her dream come true.

“It’s amazing what kind of knowledge a girl can glean in a bathroom”

Katherine, or Kat as her friends know her, has the habit of heading for the nearest bathroom when she gets the jitters. And she definitely has the jitters as she waits to bid on the bachelor of her choice in the celebrity Make-A-Wish Foundation Auction.

To make matters worse, the hunk she’s bidding on is her ex-husband, a man that if looks could kill, would have already rendered her the victim of his rapier gaze.

Why is Kat bidding for a week of her ex-husband’s time? Well now, if I told you that, I’d spoil the fun this story is sure to give its readers.

Kat and Michael are a unique pair that I felt immediately drawn too. Author Lyn Austin shapes her characters with loving care, honest emotions, and real needs that make them more than just names on the pages of a book. While the story is on the short side, it’s fully developed and the author doesn’t rush the resolution of their problems. This is another story I’d recommend adding to your reading list.

In Australia to get a break from an abusive ex-husband whose obsession has turned to stalking, the last thing Zoe is looking for is another relationship involving whips and chains. But then she runs into former Australian football player Nick Carrady. He’s sexy and the perfect gentleman—and a Dom. And Zoe’s submissive longings are reemerging—the ones that got her into so much trouble in the first place back in Texas. Fortunately all Nick can ever be is a hot, kinky vacation fling.

Nick finds the little American sub hot as hell. Her past means he has to be careful as he pushes her limits, but he has only a little time for bondage, flogging and sexual healing before she heads back to Texas. He has to convince her that the past doesn’t have to dictate her future, and hope that his passion and skill as a dominant lover can overcome her history and the ten thousand miles that’s about to come between them.

Zoe flees one Dom and isn’t looking for another when she meets hot Australian Nick Carrady. She’s fascinated by his Australian accent and he’s charmed by her Texas twang. He sees Zoe for the hot little sub she is and wants to help her heal in the short time she’s in Melbourne.

I loved Zoe for having the strength of character to get away and divorce an abusive partner, and where better to get a break but 10,000 miles away in Australia. She wasn’t too broken to take a chance on Nick, and that made the story flow instead of being stilted because of her doubts. That’s not to say she didn’t have doubts but Nick worked so hard to make sure she could learn to submit again. Nick was loveable from the moment he caught Zoe after she bumped into him, he is the type of hero we all want. He was a perfect gentleman and was willing to work to bring Zoe back into the world of sexual submission she craves.

The way the author describes Melbourne makes me want to get on a plane and go to all the places Zoe and Nick visited. I want to go to the Royal Zoo, see the gaol and try meat pies. This is a fast, sexy read that will have you falling in love and your heart racing.

Fairytales aren’t real…yeah…that’s exactly what Bianca thought. She was wrong.

For generations, the Frost family has run the Museum of Magical and Rare Artifacts, handing down guardianship from mother to daughter, always keeping their secrets to “family only.”

Gathered within museum’s walls is a collection dedicated to the Grimm fairy tales and to the rare items the family has acquired: Cinderella’s glass slipper, Snow White’s poisoned apple, the evil queen’s magic mirror, Sleeping Beauty’s enchanted spinning wheel…

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Frost wants none of it, dreaming instead of a career in art or photography or…well, anything except working in the family’s museum. She knows the items in the glass display cases are fakes because, of course, magic doesn’t really exist.

She’s about to find out how wrong she is.

Bianca is about to find out just how much magic has already changed her life.

I’m a big fan of the original fairytales, so when I read the blurb for First Frost, I knew I had to read this book. Once I started reading, I was immediately swept up into Ms. DeJesus’ world of magic. I especially love the concept of the magical world existing alongside the contemporary world. The references to current events really anchor the story in reality and make the magical aspects of this tale feel realistic.

Bianca is a very realistic character who came to life in my mind almost immediately. I could clearly picture Bianca struggling with the vacuum cleaner and longing for a life outside the family business. Bianca’s world is turned upside down when she learns that not only is magic real, but she just might have some in her blood. I do think that Bianca accepted the idea of magic and fairytales too easily. One minute she is certain that nothing in her mother’s museum is real. The next minute, she’s completely willing to cast aside her previous convictions and embrace a strange new world. I would have expected Bianca to be more skeptical before finally accepting the truth of it all. However, I will concede that the pacing of the story doesn’t allow Bianca much time to adjust. Before she knows it, Bianca and her best friend Ming are swept up in a quest battling a witch with a devious agenda.

I really enjoyed watching Bianca’s relationship with Terrance blossom. When they first meet each other in the magical world of Everafter, the attraction between them is immediately apparent. Terrance is hesitant to become involved with Bianca not just because they come from two different worlds, but also because he has something in his family history that he’s deeply ashamed of. When Bianca learns Terrance’s secret, will her feelings for him change?

Terrance’s best friend, Prince Ferdinand, is definitely the most amusing character in First Frost. Although the prince is the stereotypical self-absorbed royal, he injects some much needed humor into a very serious story. I found myself smiling and laughing nearly every time he opened his mouth.

I’m very intrigued with the ending of First Frost. Nearly all the loose ends were wrapped up when Ms. DeJesus threw in a wonderful twist at the last minute that had me thinking about Bianca long after I finished reading. I’m hoping that Ms. DeJesus writes a sequel to First Frost because I’d love to read more about Bianca and her adventures.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to read First Frost. Ms. DeJesus has taken classic fairytales and given them a modern feel while remaining true to the original stories. Anyone longing for a little magic and adventure should definitely pick up a copy of First Frost today.

Olivia Townsend’s love is eternal-and deadly.

When a murder shakes the small town of Peninsula, all eyes are on Olivia Townsend. She may look eighteen, but the townspeople can sense there’s something darker hiding behind her pretty eyes. Olivia knows the smart thing to do is to get out of town. Suspicious neighbors can only mean trouble for a vampire. But leaving becomes much more difficult when William, a mysterious man from her past, arrives. Finding out what brought him back is a temptation Olivia just can’t resist. William’s kindness and interest in Olivia only makes leaving harder. As she starts to fall for him, she’s forced to decide if sticking around is really worth the risk of being discovered. Of course, her mystery man has a secret of his own-and he’s not talking.

Olivia is a one hundred year old vampire, but looks nineteen, the age when she turned. Her world flips upside down when she meets and falls desperately in love with a vampire hunter.

Her lonely life finds meaning when she meets Jesse and his sister Jane. They are staying with Jane’s boyfriend William who is looking after his uncle’s house while the older man is away.

She senses something strange about both the men although Jane seems perfectly normal. Love distracts her, making her careless and vulnerable to other vampires.

Olivia appears to be reclusive with a mind set on keeping her nature secret and searching for her food outside her local area. The companionship she receives from the group of friends spreads warmth through her. When William and Jesse argue and Jesse leaves, Olivia’s confusion knows no bounds.

The book starts smoothly and climbs rapidly into the world of paranormal. Olivia is a vampire with a difference, a vampire who drinks blood and eats flesh – human flesh. Ms Burdette provided a wonderful central character, not the evil or funny vampires of other paranormal books. This vampire is the same as anyone else, she gardens, she cleans. The only difference is her diet and her incredible speed and stamina.

William and Jesse are two masterful men, both attracted to Olivia. Unable to resist the different allure of each of them she tries to fathom why they seem so familiar to her. In other words this is a romance. Two guys, one girl who just happens to be a vampire. Poor Jane gets a very low profile, but I believe the author might be tempted to write a sequel and maybe Jane will get a bigger part in the second book.

I would be happy to read this vampire novel more than once. Paranormal at its best.
