Wow, this novel is ripe with exciting paranormal spy woo-woo. Meaning what a reader ultimately finds out is that there is a most unusual, diabolical paranormal-esque scientific kind of potential for extreme intrigue and damage stemming from the exuberant pursuit of ‘what-if?” from a genius mind. Sounds convoluted? Readers are in for a wild time before they even get to that exciting bit of story reveal. Never mind the mental landmines that dog the hero, Player, throughout the novel plus sized adventure. This is one romance story that has so many irons in the fire, that a reader will be hard-pressed to put it down, even for a minute.

Player and Zyah have the hardest hurdles to jump in order to reach their happy ever after but it’s all worth it. I assure you.
The hot, graphic demands of the physical nature of a dominate man in the bedroom is met head to head, heat to heat by the heroine, and Zyah gives as good as she gets. She’s a strong woman in her own right and she stands up for herself whenever it’s required of her, yet she’s compassionate, loving and loyal. All good qualities that will help Player heal and overcome some of his worst nightmares. Fans of the series will understand where those nightmares stem from, and what the nature of them will most likely be.
This romance novel is well-written, exciting, has lots of depth with opportunities for readers to feel like they’re in the thick of things, and enough hot and heavy sheet action to appeal to the habanero level of romance readers.
Some of my favorite scenes in the book all seem to happen at The Floating Hat. I believe readers are going to giggle, laugh or chortle at the antics of Preacher and Sabelia. It was completely out of character for Preacher to get all frantically excited, demanding, rapturous and argumentative all at the same time. It was comical and I enjoyed every sentence. I hope those fiery sparks mean something for a future book. That would be cool. But other things happen at The Floating Hat that aren’t as comical but no less fascinating. I enjoyed the time the author had her characters spend there.
The HEA is great and it was written well, giving me assurance that Player and Zyah are going to be okay. There will still be subjects they’ll have to work out, but that is actually realistic to life. As time goes on and people learn more about the other, compromise, forgiveness, laughter and love will see them through. The heroine and hero have a strong base to work from.
Parts of the ending wrap-up were anti-climactic. There was such a buildup that I had high expectations and yet once all the cards are on the table, I thought to myself, “That’s it? That’s all there is?” The interpretation of the eyes and how it ends felt like a letdown. As weird as this sounds, I thought it resolved too fast, too … happy? Considering how stressed everyone was, with good reason, you’d think I’d be happy it eventually led to something surprisingly unpredictable, but I’m kind of not. Not totally, anyway. Perhaps my anticipation was because of misinterpretation? I don’t know and it’ll be up to readers to decide for themselves.
Overall, Reckless Road is a wonderful addition to the series and quite a good read. It kept my interest from the first chapter until the very end and there was a lot of emotion and feelings affected along the way. I liked Player and Zyah, her grandmother, Anat, and a few other characters. The feeling of family is still solid and I think it’s one of the strong points of the novel and series as a whole. I think fans of the series are going to like this one. I know I did.

Reviewed by NymphaeaWelcome back to Camino Island, where anything can happen—even a murder in the midst of a hurricane, which might prove to be the perfect crime . . .
Just as Bruce Cable’s Bay Books is preparing for the return of bestselling author Mercer Mann, Hurricane Leo veers from its predicted course and heads straight for the island. Florida’s governor orders a mandatory evacuation, and most residents board up their houses and flee to the mainland, but Bruce decides to stay and ride out the storm.
The hurricane is devastating: homes and condos are leveled, hotels and storefronts ruined, streets flooded, and a dozen people lose their lives. One of the apparent victims is Nelson Kerr, a friend of Bruce’s and an author of thrillers. But the nature of Nelson’s injuries suggests that the storm wasn’t the cause of his death: He has suffered several suspicious blows to the head.

There are twists, turns and that’s just the storm! The story has it’s own punches and a thwack with a golf club!
I’d read the first book in the Camino series, Camino Island, and wanted to get back to Bruce’s world. Honestly, I liked Bruce, even though he’s portrayed as older than his seemingly 47 years. I got the idea he was in his sixties. Oh well. I liked him as the hero of this story. He’s got rough edges, he’s not perfect and he’s a bit of a pistol. I rooted him on.
Now I have to admit this book has so many twists and turns. There’s the hurricane that comes in and there is the dead body. Now a dead body in the midst of a storm isn’t all that shocking–it happens–but this is murder. I liked how the author wove the story of Nelson’s demise and kept me riveted throughout. I honestly didn’t see the end coming.
If you’re looking for a slower moving story with a cast of characters you’ll want to have as friends, then this might be the book for you.

While the plot of this story is nothing too new or different I really enjoyed Ape and Charlotte’s characters, finding them refreshing and really well drawn. Charlotte is under no illusions about Ape and is secure enough in herself and her sexuality she’s perfectly happy to take their experience for what it is and enjoy the ride while it lasts. Readers looking for a steamy and explicit short story will certainly find that here. Charlotte and Ape become intimate very quickly after meeting and while both realise they want more from each other and their new relationship neither are quite sure how to go about getting it.
There were a few miscommunications and assumptions that felt cliched to me, but I really enjoyed the conflict with Charlotte’s ex-boyfriend. I felt that aspect of the plot added plenty of tension and was quite well handled.
Overall I found this short story to be well paced and very steamy – a good quick read and enjoyable.

What happens when the person you can’t get out of your head also happens to be the number one suspect in your murder investigation?
Derek Benson, CEO of Benson Industries, is found dead in his office at a time when everyone in the building, including him, should have been at an important meeting about the company’s future. Conveniently for the killer, the security footage from the time of the murder has vanished.
None of this fazes FBI Agent James Solomon. James knows himself, his job and how to set aside his ongoing personal problems to get the job done, even when the investigation is in a small-town backwater like Winton.
There’s just one problem—the intriguing form of young lab technician Leo Hannah, an employee of Benson Industries and a key witness, who appears to know more than he’s admitting to.
As the investigation progresses, James finds that his previously steadfast ability to separate personal from professional becomes increasingly unreliable. Can he get his head in the game before he compromises the investigation and his future career?
Reader advisory: This book contains a scene of public sex, graphic corpse description, and scenes involving violence, abduction and attempted murder.

James Solomon knew it was unprofessional—unethical, even—to be grateful for the murder of a high-profile businessman two days before what would have been his parents’ fortieth wedding anniversary. But his robust professional pride couldn’t put a dent in the very real relief he felt when the call had come through.
He climbed out of the rented car outside Benson Industries HQ and breathed in the brisk sea breeze. The early morning was still gloomy, casting everything in shadow. Gibson slammed the passenger door with a sigh as a woman in a sheriff’s uniform hurried over to meet them.
“Agents, thanks for coming so quickly.”
“No problem, Sheriff,” Gibson replied, her face schooled professionally blank. “The sooner we start, the better. Sheriff Coyle, right?”
“That’s right,” the middle-aged woman said, her smile doing nothing to warm the pale set of her face.
“Agent Lisa Gibson,” Gibson responded, shaking the other woman’s hand then indicating James. “Agent James Solomon. We’ve had the incident reports, but can you fill us in using your own words?”
“Sure. Follow me,” Sheriff Coyle said, her voice a bit steadier. She preceded them to the wide, glass entrance and swiped a card through a reader. They paced past the empty reception desk and down a marble-tiled corridor. The place was deserted, the black eyes of cameras the only things watching them. “The vic is Derek Benson, fifty-five years old,” the sheriff continued. “Born here in Winton, then got a job with the FDA in Maryland after college. Struck out on his own at age thirty. Now he’s the owner, CEO, director—you name it—of Benson Industries.”
“Specialist pharmaceuticals, right?” Gibson asked, scanning reports on her phone.
“That’s right. Pulling in some pretty serious business these days. Some big names on the client list. That’s why we called you guys in.”
“So what happened?”
“Benson was found by the janitor in his office this morning, shot three times in the chest.”
“Time of death?” Gibson asked.
“Our ME is putting it around nine p.m. last night, though he says he can be more accurate after the postmortem.”
“And you said the security camera footage is missing?” Gibson asked, eyeing another camera as they strode past.
“Yeah,” said the sheriff with a weary exasperation James could more than identify with. “The security system backs up everything onto disk. The disks from eight p.m. last night to three this morning have been taken.”
“No online backup?” James ventured, not hopefully, as they stepped onto an elevator.
Coyle shook her head. “I don’t think Benson trusted the cloud and all that. They’re dusting the Security Room for prints where the disks were kept now.”
“Did Benson often work that late?” Gibson asked as the elevator hummed up to the seventh floor.
“He put a lot of hours in, sure, but there was some kind of business presentation last night. All the heads of department and senior staff were here from seven-thirty onward. Plus, some of the lab rats were working late on a deadline.”
“Lab rats?” James queried, as Coyle led them out onto a level that was all glass walls and spacious offices with big desks and bold, minimalist furniture.
“The technicians,” she said, glancing this way and that, as if wary of what might be hiding in the maze of glass. “We have a list of everyone who was in the building at the time from the swipe system, though so far no one saw anyone leave the conference room or the labs.”
“How many people are we talking?” Gibson, warily.
Coyle pulled a battered notepad from a back pocket and flipped through it. “Thirty-one.”
“That’s a lot of people with opportunity,” Gibson muttered.
“One of them was his wife,” Coyle added. “Melissa Benson.”
“His wife was at the business meeting?”
Coyle nodded. “She’s a senior partner in the firm. She delivered one of the presentations.”
“At what time?”
“Pretty much the same time they reckon he was shot,” Coyle said and grimaced. “Sorry.”
“Well, we wouldn’t want it to be too easy. She looks younger than him,” Gibson said, examining a photo of Melissa Benson on the arm of her husband at some event on a news website.
“She’s his second wife. He and his first divorced about ten years ago.”
“Amicably?”
“I’m afraid so,” Coyle said with another sympathetic expression.
“What did you think of the victim?” James asked, watching the sheriff’s face.
“Me?” Her forehead creased. “I didn’t know him.”
“But you knew of him,” James pressed. “Big company. Small town. You had to have some impression of what he was like.”
Coyle slid him a sideways glance. “He did stuff for some local charities. Donated to a few nature conservation causes and the homeless actions—that kind of thing.”
“But?” James prompted, seeing her face had tightened.

Elitist.”
“What would you say?”
“I’ve never had much contact,” Coyle hedged. “They’re law-abiding and keep to themselves.”
“What do you make of the wife, Melissa?”
“Reserved.”
“She’s not upset?”
“Oh, she’s upset,” Coyle said. “But she’s not the sort to go to pieces in front of the likes of me.”
“The report said the murder weapon was his own gun,” James said, carefully logging the sheriff’s last reply away for further consideration.
“Sure looks that way. He kept it in his desk.” Coyle stopped at one of the glass doors, where a uniformed officer, looking a little green, stood at attention. The body of Derek Benson was slumped in a large, designer office chair under the window. Blood splattered up the glass behind him, looking like red rain suspended in the gray sky. The crime-scene photographer was taking close-ups of the bullet wounds while his partner, who looked old enough to have been the scene technician at the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, was bent over the desk, sweeping for prints as delicately as if he were applying makeup.
“We don’t get much murder here,” Coyle murmured. “Winton’s a peaceful town. We get some drugs, some drunk and disorderlies, a bit of fraud. But stuff like this?” She shook her head.
“A big company shoe-horned into a small community,” James ventured, watching both the officers’ faces, “can cause friction.”
Coyle raised her eyebrows. “Big companies are fine. But BI’s too big—and only likely to get bigger.”
“Oh yes?” Gibson prompted, pulling on some gloves and pushing open the door.
“That’s what they’re saying that presentation was about,” Coyle said, hanging back near the door as Gibson bent over the body. “They’re striking a deal with an international distributer for their newest antiviral.”
“Do you know which distributer?” James asked, examining the photographs hanging on the interior wall. Black-and-white shots of the local harbor, mostly, plus a few of the hills west of the town.
Coyle frowned at her notepad, ruffling the pages. “It’s in here somewhere. I’m sure it went in the report.”
“It did,” Gibson replied, giving James a hard look. “Loadstone Inc.”
Coyle smiled a relieved smile, and Gibson went back to scrutinizing the crumpled form of Derek Benson. His chin was on his chest. A rope of blood-speckled saliva hung from a corner of his lined mouth. His skin was yellow-gray and his limbs stiff with the rigor of someone dead nearly twelve hours. His hands, hairless and manicured, rested in his lap. His eyebrows were heavy and dark. His thinning hair was iron gray, though still almost black at the nape. He wore an expensive suit and a dark, conservative tie. Blood soaked his shirtfront and pooled under the chair. The gun was on the floor by the desk. A desk drawer stood wide open.
“All three shots went right into his heart,” Gibson said, leaning close to the wounds. “The killer knew how to shoot.”
“There’s a lock on the drawer but not a complex one,” James said, examining the keypad on the drawer front.
“And there’s no signs of a struggle,” Gibson replied, surveying the rest of the meticulously tidy office.
James nodded. “Someone he knew. Someone he trusted too—or at least someone he wasn’t afraid of or he’d have been standing.”
“But that could be any one of the thirty-one people in the building last night,” Gibson said sourly. She stood with her hands on her hips, glaring at the corpse like it had done her personal harm. “The question is, did he get the gun out himself or did the killer?”
“Business expansion,” James said, tilting the computer monitor toward him. The screen saver was another artistic shot of Winton Harbor. James began entering the most popular password choices. “Not always a popular move.”
“And why was he here?” Gibson frowned. “With a big-deal presentation evening happening in the conference room and the future of his company in the balance?”
“And he’s sitting in his office four floors up,” James affirmed, smiling when ‘qwerty123’ allowed him into the computer. “Writing an email to personnel, by the look of it.” He gestured at the screen. Gibson came to his elbow and bent to examine the open, unsent email with ‘Contract Termination’ typed into the subject line and a blinking cursor in the blank form.
Gibson was quiet a moment. James moved to a set of bookshelves against the far wall and scanned the titles. Tomes on business management, chemistry, biology, academic journals on pharmaceuticals and FDA manuals took up most of the upper shelves. The lower ones held several battered volumes on the history of Winton and the surrounding area, plus some on blues, jazz and soul music, with a Frank Sinatra biography thrown in for good measure.
“I think we have all we need,” Gibson said to Coyle, who was watching them with an expectant air. “The ME can take him away now.” Coyle nodded and stepped back out into the corridor, dialing a number on her cell. “And how about you stop making digs at the local law enforcement, Agent?” Gibson scolded softly.
“If they slip up this early on, it’ll end in roadblocks,” he returned, watching Coyle through the glass. “And we need to establish local feeling about the situation.”
“Consider it established. Are you getting anything on this guy?”
“He loved his town…and music,” James mused, glancing around the office again. “But I think he loved his company more.”
“His company grossed several million last year. I can see why he had a soft spot for it.” Coyle was just hanging up the phone as they rejoined her. “Okay, Sheriff. We need you to round up the employees from last night. We’ll question them here.”
“Yes, ma’am,” she said. “Most of them will be turning up to work at eight anyway.”
“Good,” said Gibson, looking at her watch and repressing a sigh. “Tell them they can only have the building back when we’re done. That’ll get them through the door.”
Coyle nodded and hurried off.
“We’re doing the interviews here?” James questioned.
“One,” Gibson said, holding up a finger and moving back toward the elevator, “interviewing near the crime scene could get the killer twitchy and we might get a hit early, meaning I can be back in time for my husband’s promotion dinner tomorrow. And two,” she said, stabbing the elevator button with more force than was necessary, “getting everyone across town to the Winton Police Station with its single interview room and stone-age Wi-Fi will add hours to the whole damn circus. I’m not paid enough to be here any longer than necessary on what should have been my vacation week.”
James set up his interview station in the room he was directed to, put the digital recorder on the desk, pulled out a new, leather-bound notepad and re-read the initial reports on his phone as the clock ticked toward eight a.m.
He frowned when his personal phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, saw the number and cut the call. Shortly after, a police officer ushered in a tall woman in a business suit. She was already flustered and annoyed. James could already see a queue of similarly well-dressed and irritated people lining up outside. He flipped open his notebook, indicated the chair opposite and began.

Undercover Outlaw is a quality written piece of literature that walks the fine line between a quest for justice and a thirst for revenge. I teetered between the two as the story took me on a journey mixed with romance and danger.
The leading characters, Trinity and Jesse immediately brought the book to life on page one. It was impossible to put the book down. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see what happened next. I felt the instant connection between the two. In fact all the characters were well developed. It was easy to hate the town’s tyrannical leader. Hard not to love the townsfolk in Prairie Ridge.
The romance between Trinity and Jesse was more sweet than sensual but regardless they were definitely entertaining. I laughed when I read the word “dimwit. I haven’t heard that word in ages. My mother used to use that word.
Undercover Outlaw was a fast paced, plot twisting, emotional provoking story that pleased me greatly. I especially enjoyed the epilogue. I applaud Gini Rifkin for such a wonderful read.

With tales inside of tales, like a feline version of A Thousand And One Nights, this whimsical, yet slyly profound science fiction fable answers the eponymous question of How Cats Survived The Apocalypse.

The plot twists were creative and well done. A few of them took me by total surprise which is always an amusing thing to experience. I enjoyed getting this peek at how the author’s imagination worked. He sure seemed to have enjoyed the process of coming up with ways to keep his characters moving towards their goals without reaching them in the manner in which they assumed everything would happen.
This was something I enjoyed reading quite a bit, but there were times when I had trouble matching up the stories of the three cat ambassadors due to how many different timelines and eras they covered. I only wish I’d had a clearer understanding of the order in which everything happened and why their explanations sometimes seemed to be saying stuff that didn’t quite all fit together. Was it a commentary on the way legends can change between generations or among different cultures? Should I have listened more closely to one cat than to the others? If I knew the answers to these questions, I would have gone with a much higher rating.
Mr. Arnold had an elegant writing style that fit the themes of this novella perfectly. I kept a dictionary close by to look up the ornate words he included in his descriptions. Each one of them was carefully chosen and added new layers of meaning to the scenes they were featured in. This is definitely something that should be savored, especially once the cats began sharing their stories about how the reign of man ended and Mars became a feline paradise.
How Cats Survived the Apocalypse was a thought-provoking read that I hope to revisit again soon.

Stevie Nicks is a more complicated person than I ever imagined and she’d underrated, too.
I’ve been a fan of Stevie Nicks since I was a kid. My parents reared me on the classics, mellow gold, 70s rock and primarily Fleetwood Mac. My father once claimed he wanted to name me Stephanie, Stevie’s given name, but my mother outlawed it. Shrugs. I’ve seen Stevie Nicks’ videos and wondered about the person in the swishy skirts and flowing shawls. Now I know.
As I said above, she’s much more complicated than you might think. She had a decent childhood and was encouraged to be a musician, but once she got out on her own, she found out how hard it is to make it big. I liked the emphasis on her early musical career. She tried, fell down, tried again, got knocked down and never gave up. She went for her chance. Honestly, she’s the kind of rock star women need. She never quit.
There are tidbits about who she dated, when she dated them, her drug use, getting clean, getting hooked on Klonopin and other things that seem salacious, but really, this is the story of a woman trying to find her way, despite the crooked road, and making her career her own.

I crouched behind a row of old dusty cars beside my mom and two other sharpshooters, my body trembling. Don’t freak out. Be brave. Remember your training.
I took a deep breath and dared a peek ahead between two cars. Across the street was a deserted grocery store covered in grime and soot. It was a small shop, maybe two or three times the size of an average gas station. A bunch of old, rotted wooden planks covered the windows, but the front entrance was untouched. Whoever had been here was either dead inside or long gone. No one in their right mind would leave their home unfortified, not anymore.
All was quiet except for the wind, but I knew better. We all did. Any second and the Reapers could be right on us. Though they never came out during the day, we couldn’t leave anything to chance.
Mom pulled out her walkie. “Proceeding with root-out of potential Reapers.” She retrieved an oddly-shaped ball constructed from cans, tins, and several small bells we called chatter boxes from her supply bag and hurled it over her head.
The chatter box clunked loudly on the ground, bouncing before stopping in front of the seemingly-empty store. For a couple moments we all sat there, waiting for any sign of Reapers.
Mom’s walkie crackled to life. “Patricia, I think we should–”
“Quiet!” Mom hissed. “I think I hear something.”
I couldn’t hear anything, but there was definitely a difference in the air, like it was charged somehow. Just like the basement five years ago. Images of the past filled my mind: My little sister Imogen, the electrified feeling down in the basement, the Reaper’s sudden appearance. I shook off my thoughts and edged close to my mother.
“You’re right, something’s coming.”
Mom nodded, her gaze fixed on the grocery store. “Be brave, Gregory. If you have to, fall back.”
I shook my head. There was no way I was gonna miss out on this.
Her eyes widened, and she gripped her walkie once more. “Reapers, incoming!”
I drew my Glock from my holster, turned the safety off, and tried to look through the abandoned store’s smudged entrance. It was dark inside, but I could see two hulking figures scrambling to the front of the store at breakneck speed.
Oh shi–
Two Reapers crashed through the entrance in an explosion of glass that blasted shards in a thousand directions. As the projectiles clinked on the ground I stared at the monsters before us, a chill running down my spine.
Large, festering boils covered their reddish, emaciated bodies. They stood tall on two clawed feet, but could easily switch to all fours for speed, doubling the danger of their razor sharp appendages. The Reapers opened their mouths, revealing multiple layers of jagged, pointy teeth as they gave ear-piercing shrieks of rage.
A grin spread across my face. Time to die, assholes.
I aimed, then pulled my trigger as deafening gunshots came from my left and right. We’d hit the one on the right several times. A thick, black liquid oozed from its wounds, but it was still in fighting shape and pretty freakin’ pissed based on the hideous snarl on its face.
The aggravated Reaper leaped forward on all fours, bounding over the car we were hiding behind and landing in front of the sharpshooter furthest from me. It gave a mighty roar, snatching him up and throwing him like a rag doll. He went flying, landing on a nearby car’s windshield with a loud crack. The monster eyed the other sharpshooter with furious, predatory yellow eyes.
Shit, shit, shit! I lunged towards the Reaper as I targeted it, then yanked on my trigger. It gave a high-pitched cry of pain and staggered back a step. Damn it! I’d only hit its shoulder. Its hateful gaze was now focused on me.
A sudden gunblast boomed from my comrade, and the Reaper fell to the ground, unmoving. A large pool of black sludge gathered underneath its head where the bullet had exited.
Before I could rejoice in the kill, Mom shouted nearby. I spun around. She was battling the other Reaper in front of the grocery store with a long knife in hand. She had deep cuts on her arms and legs, while the monster sported several nonfatal gunshot wounds. I tried to aim for the Reaper but they were moving too fast, desperately circling one another for an advantage. One wrong move and I’d shoot my own mother.
The Reaper took a wide-arching swipe at her, but she dodged to the side, cutting its leg as she went. The monster screeched and turned to attack, but mom slid between its legs and was now behind it. Point blank, Mom whipped out her revolver and fired three shots into the back of the Reaper’s head. It fell to the ground, twitching in its final death throes.
Mom lifted her combat boot and stomped on its head with a sickening crunch. The Reaper didn’t move anymore. She spat on it, then pulled out her walkie as I approached. “All clear. Torch the bodies.”
I glanced back. Twenty yards away behind another row of dead cars, our small group of noncombatants emerged. Mom strolled towards the grocery store and I jogged to catch up to her, eager to see what was inside. Whatever it was, it had better be worth it.
