Happy Holidays
N.J. Walters

This time of year, we can all start to feel a little crazy and stressed out. In spite of it all, I absolutely love this time of year. I love everything about the holidays—the food, the music, the pretty lights, the decorations that have been in the family for years, and the time spent with family and friends.

So why is it that when the holidays arrive most of us are too tired to enjoy it?

Expectations! We all have such high expectations, encouraged by television advertising and all the glossy magazines we see at the supermarket checkout. We feel that everything has to be perfect or that the holidays are ruined.

Rubbish!

Some of the most memorable holidays I’ve had are the ones when I didn’t have that much. You remember what’s really important at a time like that. It’s your loved ones and friends, having a roof over your head and enough groceries in the cupboard. Not everyone has that.

The holidays are about the people you share it with, not the stuff. This is an economically challenging time for many, so start some new traditions this year to replace the expensive ones that have outlived their usefulness. Go back to basics when it comes to gift giving: a bottle of inexpensive wine (sometimes you can get mini-bottles of wine for under $5), some homemade cookies or cake, a gift certificate for the movies or the local coffee shop. If you’re crafty, you can knit socks or scarves or even a sweater. Lots of time thrift stores have bags of yarn, donated by someone who never finished their particular project. You get the idea.

If even that is financially challenging, maybe you can give someone the gift of time.

In the crazy world we live in, I’m sure some family members or friends would appreciate that more than anything. Invite your sister, mother, or girlfriend over for the afternoon for a cookie baking session. You’ll have fun and have a ton of baked goods to share at the end of the day. Take an afternoon and spend it with your spouse, significant other, or kids. Chose activities that don’t cost money. Go to a park. Take in a tree-lighting ceremony. Window shop without buying anything—okay, maybe some hot chocolate, but that’s it. The idea is to spend time with that person. So turn off the cell phone and relax and enjoy.

And do something for charity. Pick up something and drop it in the food bank bin at the grocery store, volunteer somewhere, drop your coffee money for the week into the Salvation Army cup. You’ll be glad you did.

The holidays are meant to be a joyous time. Enjoy them!

Happy holidays.

Dying isn’t an option. I’ve survived a kidnapping, and now I’m on the run from the Knights of the Dragon who want my gift. There’s nothing a dragon loves more than treasure. I’m Abigail Owens, and I can sense gemstones. When I find myself drawn to a beautiful stone bracelet at a tiny shop in Moscow, I can’t help but have it — even though I can sense it’s power. But I didn’t realize with this one decision I’ve just put myself in the middle of a war between the Knights and a Drakon.

I guess I’m just lucky like that.

The only person I trust even a little is Vasili Zima, which is weird since I’m not sure if he wants to kill me or protect me. I’m drawn to him in a way I hadn’t thought possible, and he feels the same way, or he wouldn’t be risking his life to help me. He’s wanted by the bad guys just as much as I am, and staying with me, well, there’s a hundred percent chance I’m about to get us both killed. But I will not be going down without a fight.

I am the cookie Monster!

December rolls around, bringing with it colder weather and very often snow, and of course, Christmas. Along with Halloween, Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love decorating the house – inside and out. I love switching out my dishes – plates, bowls and cups – for Christmas ones. I love shopping for the perfect gifts, and then wrapping those gifts. And I love baking cookies.

I can’t remember how long ago it started, but one year I made four or five different types of cookies, packaged them up and gave them to my folks and my sister. The next year I made a six or seven varieties and added my extended family to the list. The following year there were more kinds of cookies, and I added a few friends to the list. Then even more varieties and some of the neighbors became recipients. Needless to say, it’s become a tradition now.

It begins in November when I start planning. I look through my recipes. I buy magazines with cookie recipes. I plan which cookies I will do again and which new ones I want to try. Perennial favorites include maple cookies, cranberry swirls, egg nog logs (the son’s favorite and though they are a pain to make and I say every year I’m not doing them this year, I still make them because they are the one cookie he asks me to do), chocolate stars, pecan spiced tea cookies, snickerdoodles, white chocolate cranberry cookies, and magic cookies (aka overnight meringues). There’s always a few new ones that I want to try – sometimes they get added to the perennial list, sometimes they are a one off.

Then I plan out my attack. I always do the gluten free cookies first at the beginning of December because we get together early with the extended family and some of them are GF. Then mid-December I make the dough for the ice box cookies because I can do those a few weeks ahead of time and just leave them in the freezer until I am ready to bake them. Then, the week before Christmas, I make all the other cookies, leaving the last day for the ice box cookies, which just need to come out of the freezer, get sliced and baked.

Then I put the cookies together in either baskets or those little holiday themed cardboard boxes that look like take-out boxes, only with holiday patterns on them. Then I deliver the cookies. A regular cookie monster. I even have a sign in my kitchen regarding my Christmas cookie habit!

Is it possible to find the heart’s home twice in a lifetime?

Six years ago, Sawyer Burroughs’s life fell apart. His soul mate and husband of four years died of cancer, and he fell into depression… and a bottle. It’s taken six years, but he’s turned his life around and is ready to start again on the other side of the country.

In his new apartment, he’s welcomed by his young and carefree neighbor, Derek, from across the hall. Derek is eager to make Sawyer feel welcome and even offers him a place to stay when Sawyer arrives ahead of his furniture.

The upstairs neighbors are just as friendly, and soon Sawyer finds a place with the friends-with-benefits threesome. He’s not the shy, vanilla lover they think he is, though, and he’s hiding more than a pair of nipple rings. As it happens, the guys have kinky secrets of their own, but for four men to make a BDSM relationship last, they’ll have to figure some things out.

The Tale of My Holiday Letter

This year marks 20 years since my first Annual Grabowski Holiday letter—one of my favorite traditions.

While writing this article, I confirmed when I began sending one, thinking it was the year I got married. But the earliest I found was 1998. Then I realized, Oh yeah, we didn’t have a computer in 1995. In the 90s, holiday letters were the new fad. People were buying their first computers and printers. Soon Staples and Office Depot jumped on the bandwagon, selling specially designed holiday paper.

Since we moved around a lot in the early years of our marriage, a holiday letter was a great way to keep in touch with friends. Over the years, my holiday letter and card combo increased to close to 250 recipients, and every time we did something special I would make a mental note to add it to the year’s letter. Then I perfected a process with the creation of a database for all those addresses (for holiday use only) and buying a fancy address stamper and special sealing sponge. I even learned to whip out a draft in under thirty minutes and began to bribe my kids to take part in the assembly line.

But beginning probably a decade ago, the letters from friends began to dwindle even as our holiday cards skyrocketed. (We can cover four doors in our house with all the cards we receive.) Were people getting lazy? Was the cost prohibitive? (It does cost in the hundreds of dollars to mail do many cards and letters, and that special paper isn’t cheap.) It didn’t take long to determine social media was to blame. Why write a letter when most of your friends are updated on Facebook or Instagram throughout the year?

Two years ago, I finally decided it was my time to skip the letter—almost no one else was doing it. Besides, I was having a down year being in the midst of selling my first novel, (those rejections do get to you,) so I didn’t feel inspired to write about our year.

But do you know what happened? People came out of the woodwork asking me, what happened to the letter? Did you forget mine? Was it a mistake? Would I consider a New Year’s letter instead? I had no idea people looked forward to it so much.

End of story, the letter returned last year, and by the time this blog is posted, 250 people will have received it. I now credit those letters as one activity that propelled me to eventually try and turn writing into a career as an author.

I hope everyone reading this blog also has holiday traditions that bring you so much joy and connection.

Good Tidings, Red Plaid & Ham-Bone Soup

Hi readers! I’m writing my latest novel, the seventh book in my small town romance series, and there’s going to be a winter wedding. For those following the series, I won’t say who’s tying the knot. I will, however, offer a teaser: the bride will be wearing red instead of white…

While the soon to be Mr. and Mrs. X have been planning their New Year’s nuptials, I’ve been thinking about the time of the season. The books take place on the Gulf Coast where there isn’t much snow. I know because I live here. Here, children don’t have snow days. They have hurricane days. And when sleet does arrive, the cities shut down everything. Locals don’t complain about the lack of snow. Having lived here all of my life like my characters, I’m not a fan of cold. However, I do love the holidays. I love fuzzy blankets and boot socks. I love putting on my long john’s and drinking hot cocoa. I love chunky knit sweaters, wooly jackets, and red plaids.

I love the warm hues people surround themselves with in wintertime. Once, I worked in a florist’s shop. When December rolled around, shipments of red and white poinsettias arrived. I would often leave my desk for a stroll in the greenhouse. It was like walking into a fairy dream.

Wintertime is an excellent time to practice the art of the cuddle with the one you love. It’s the perfect time to curl up with a good book. I find that I read more in the winter than any other time of the year. It’s the ideal time to break out the crockpot, throw your favorite soup ingredients in and let them infuse your home with good smells. While Christmas may call for honey-baked ham, New Year’s simply cannot happen without black-eyed peas and ham-bone soup. I’ve been honing this recipe. It’s the reason my spouse found me standing over a soup pot at three o’clock in the morning on New Year’s last year. I invite you to it.

Finding the Joy

This time of year my wallet is full of lists—those crumpled up, half crossed off reminders that I still have things to do.

The best thing about lists is drawing a line through the last item. I feel entitled to celebrate by hanging out at the book store with a gingerbread latte, making fun of the titles by adding “in bed with no clothes on.”

Try it, it’s funny.

Lately though, when I peek into the vortex of disorganization that is my purse, I continually find unfinished lists and that means no gingerbread latte for me. I begin to resent all the errands, which I now call ‘things that get in the way of stuff I really want to do‘.

I love the holidays…really I do, but sometimes the work involved in putting the Merry in Christmas leaves me exhausted and more bitter than Scrooge.

With baking, mailing packages, and making sure everyone knows their line (yes singular) for the Christmas play, I roam the Shopping Malls—otherwise known as the black hole of commercialism—and my holiday mojo gets sucked away.

I drag my parcels through the parking lot, getting my coat dirty from brushing up against the salt encrusted cars. Bah humbug is right, life would be so much more enjoyable without all the fuss.

Then on Sunday, I listened while someone talked about feeling the joy.

Feeling the joy?

How can I feel the joy when I have all of these things to do? If I don’t wrap the presents and make the cookies, who will? Like most profound moments of epiphany, their answer was simple—you feel the joy in everything you do.

One of the coolest chicks out there, Gwen Stefani, said it best, “What You Waiting For?”

And truly, why delay the happiness? I realized I have a choice. Instead of begrudging the baking and shopping, I can be thankful that I’m able to buy my groceries instead of having to depend on the food bank to feed my family. And that baking with my kids is a chance to make a memory, not another chore to be completed.

There is a tangible sense of freedom when you exercise the choice to be happy.

I’m putting off dusting/vacuuming to read Christmas books with my kids. Instead of madly decorating to make everything perfect for a family party, I’m laying out all my ornaments for my beautiful nieces to have a go at the tree.

Today, I suggest you make the choice and feel the joy. Don’t wait until everything is crossed off, because guess what—there’s always something you forgot. So sit back, get a gingerbread latte, and read How the Grinch Stole Christmas In Bed With No Clothes On.

Cheers! *holds up latte*

Busy

Busy, busy, busy. Anymore, the theme for Christmas is busy is better. We’ve become so into finding the perfect gifts and attending all invites that by the time the holidays are over we are relieved instead of revived.

I admit I get caught up too, but I also make a point to find blocks of time to be selfish. Selfish isn’t always a bad thing. For me, selfish is having lunch with a friend, playing with the dogs, and most of all, taking the time to sit down and read.

Reading novellas or anthologies during the holidays are the perfect for me. Novellas may take a day or two. Stories in anthologies can be read a story or two at a time, and you’re spending an hour, thirty minutes, or even fifteen minutes with yourself.

Of course, I read holiday stories during this time, but also I throw in few mysteries or feel-good nonfiction. When I finish a book or story, I have a glorious sense of feel-good calm and a better grasp on the dreaded to-do list.

But I’m too busy. I just can’t find the time.

Yes you can. How much time do you spend online every day? Cut your minutes by a third, and you can a short story. Delegate a few items on the to-do, and you can knock out a novella.

Don’t feel you have to be the sole person responsible for the success of Christmas.

Think about how joyful and relaxed reading makes you. And when you’re less stressed, things seem to work out.

Holiday Snowmen From Old Up-Cycled Bottles

My DIY craft for a quick and easy decoration is felt snowmen. These are super easy to make. And they do not require lots of expensive items either. This would be a super project to work on with the kids.

Start with various sized bottles or jars. Mine all came from white bottles: supplements, OTC medicine, etc… Almost any round object would work. Also, white felt, black felt, and orange felt. Amounts will be based on sizes of bottles and number of snowmen to be made. Lastly, glue. Elmer’s school style or hot glue are both fine.

First, glue white felt around the empty bottle or jar. Then glue black felt around the top for a hat. Length will depend on overall desired size of hat. To make the hat brim, cut a hole in the center of a black felt circle slightly larger than the bottle’s/ jar’s diameter. Pull over bottle/ jar and glue in place.

Lastly, add googly eyes, orange felt nose and cheeks. Tie ribbons (Christmas design or not) around hat and/or body. Use puffy paint to draw a mouth and outline the nose. If you have a tall enough snowman, glue some buttons under the mouth to indicate a torso.

Viola! All done! Photo attached.

New Year’s Eve

I love the Christmas holidays in particular, but, every year, I look forward to New Year’s Eve. This party-time is special to me because I love to dress up and play princess for the evening (Cinderella wearing her shoe home!)  I love to don my formal dress, and I always buy a new gown for NYE, and putting on the Ritz. I enjoy elaborate dinner-dances with all the trappings: Elegant surroundings, wine with dinner, and a good band…and other guests in black tie.  Never forget the men, handsome in their tux!

My favorite NYE of all was the year after Hurricane Ike devastated Galveston, TX. That may sound morbid, but it was because Rod Stewart was in Galveston doing a benefit for the town.  We went to Moody Gardens tres-elegant party.  All evening, they kept advertising this special personality.  Then they announced, “Ladies and Gentlemen, rock legend Rod Stewart.”

I grabbed the hand of our table mate (female that I didn’t know) and in seconds flat was in front of the stage as he swung into “Maggie May”.

I remember well that I wore a strapless mermaid gown in black lace.

Happy Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone!

Heather Morique is a witch. The problem is she doesn’t know it. Her husband Jahill was a refugee from an obscure branch of the Arawak Indians. After his death, mysterious whispers lure her to his homeland of Jamaica. Soon, she finds herself in a web of secrets, lies and illusions.
Jahill’s people worship Eyrael, the God of Wind and Sea, and his brother Sofiel, the God of Fire and Earth. The new Shaman has pitted brother against brother, and these two powerful spirits from an alternate universe fight to become the tribe’s ruling deity. Will light or darkness reign?
When Heather unwittingly summons Eyrael, these two unlikely soul mates face a dangerous fate. The chemistry between them is more disturbing than the long-buried secrets.

Gaming Christmas!

Moving beyond the Santa Claus stage means entering a new phase in celebrating Christmas. The kids have grown into teen agers, college students and beyond. No more transformers, doll houses, rocking horses and bicycles. No more home visits by a family-designated costumed Santa. At least not until there are grandkids. A practical gift exchange and dinner or buffet now tops the home agenda of many families celebrating Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

However, tearing those older kids away from their cell phones and social media toys after for gift opening and gorging now requires something interactive to grab—and hold—their attention. Games. For several years, we have achieved this with gift games that are surprising and creative. Going through the letters of C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S, we buy one gift at a designated price that represents the letter. For instance, “C” could be cinema tickets, a cashmere scarf, camera, collectibles, crafts, Costco gift card, even cash, etc. (In one of our “S” years, I ended up with a giant sock monkey in a sailor hat, while someone else chose a box of frozen steaks.) Gifts are wrapped and put under the tree. We then choose numbers and number one picks a gift and opens it. Number two either chooses a gift from under the tree or steals number one’s gift and so on. Whoever has a gift stolen down the line immediately picks another gift.

Rules are established ahead, besides designating the amount to be spent. Can someone steal more than once? Can the gifts be tagged with M or F for male or female? Can the hostess provide a final grand prize for the most creative or popular gift? Even with small children in the family, this works as they open their gifts from everyone first, and while they play with their toys, we play our letter game. Variations of the words we go through can be “Holiday-Noel-Snowman-Winter,”etc. Buying only one gift per person makes this game very affordable in large families or groups and clubs. We established a $5 max with a group of 14 friends that met during the holidays.

In recent years, after a buffet, our family looks forward to playing card and board games like 13 Skidoo, Rummikub, Spoons, or Play Nine. We each bring a $10 gift card of choice and whoever wins a game round chooses a gift card. Nobody can win twice until all players have won at least once. As a hostess, who is trying to downsize, I varied this by wrapping up white elephant booby prizes to give to the losers. Everyone now looks forward to Gaming Christmas now!
