Phantoms is an adult fiction that tells the story of Erik Destler, a latter day Phantom of the Opera. Erik sets out to take over and rule the Palais Garnier with La Divina – Carlotta Caccini, as his queen, but at each turn, is seemingly thwarted by his nemesis – the original Phantom of the Opera, now the Opera Ghost. Phantoms is set in that same famous Paris opera house, amidst the staging of Guiseppi Verdi’s opera, Macbeth, one hundred years on from the first appearance of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra in 1910.

I was excited to be able to read this – I love the original Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux (and, of course, the musical). There are definite parallels between this contemporary version and the original. We have a young singer, Christine, who has to stand in for the star, Carlotta (who, although not ill, is so much of a diva that she refuses to come to rehearsal so she can rest her voice for the opening night). We also have Raoul who has loved Christine all her life (in the modern day version, she is in love with Raoul’s brother, who is missing). Erik is still the “phantom” but this Erik is not scarred physically. He is, however, very scarred mentally due to torture that the reader finds out about during flashbacks he experiences.

There were several minor editing issues that occasionally took me out of the story, but that probably wouldn’t bother most people. I also never really understood Erik’s motivation in wanting to take over the Opera House – but then again, he was disturbed. However, even with that, the storyline itself was so compelling I was drawn right back into the story.
The characters were well-drawn and I found myself invested in them—wanting to discover what would happen next. Of the supporting characters, one of my favorite was Madame Giraud, the psychic concierge of the theatre, who (like her counterpart Madame Giry) hears the actual Phantom.

There is a lot of action going on and some beautiful descriptions of the opera house. It was fun reading through the book and seeing the parallels between it and the original. All in all, a good addition to the Phantom genre.

Even ordinarily, cloudmining can be dangerous — those silver linings are heavy and potentially lethal — but it’s nothing compared being a cloudminer on the run.

The plot twists were nicely written. I didn’t see most of them coming, and that made this tale a lot of fun to read. No sooner did I think I knew what was going to happen next then the author would completely surprise me yet again with where the storyline went or what the characters casually revealed about themselves that they hadn’t previously mentioned.

It would have been nice to know the main character’s name. I spent most of my reading time not sure if this person was a man or a woman. While this question was eventually answered, I would have liked to know their name as well since none of the other characters even described the protagonist’s appearance. It felt a little odd to never find out something as basic as their name when I also had no mental image of what they looked like. While this is a minor criticism, it did bother me enough to mention it in my review.

My favorite part of the ending was how much it left me yearning for more. The major questions I had about what cloudmining was and why the main character had chosen that occupation were answered more than satisfactorily, but I still wished I could have a few hundred more pages to really dig into this world. It was quite different from Earth in both subtle and immediately noticeable ways. The small glimpses I caught of how it all worked were delightful.

Silver Linings was a highly creative tale that I’d recommend to anyone who has ever wondered what life might be like on other planets.

Milt Edwards, survivor of an incident that almost took his life six months previously, is back. He and his girlfriend, Roberta (Robbie) Jones, both suffer from PTSD as a result of their ordeal, and they attend counseling sessions in order to help them work through their mental anguish.

Nothing helps, but then a friend of Milt’s is killed, ostensibly by the same person who designed the Undernet—Azrael. Galvanized into action, Milt once again joins forces with the FBI in order to find out who Azrael truly is, and he is paired with a rookie agent, Nasraana Shaksy, an American Muslim who has her own battles to fight.

The mystery of who Azrael is deepens, and Milt desperately searches for the truth. The only question is, when he discovers who is behind it all, if he will survive it.

Some monsters have become very good at hiding their true selves.

Milt’s character development was well done. I’d mentioned wanting to see more of it in my review of The Undernet, so it was nice to see how much this character changed in his second adventure. He had been pretty badly traumatized from being kidnapped and tortured back then, and he was still dealing with the repercussions of that when this case began. It was neat to see so much continuity for him there as he continued to heal.

The cast of characters was really large. Milt and the FBI agents he was working with kept finding more and more people on the Darkweb who were involved in child trafficking as the story progressed. While Mr. Frankel’s descriptions of everyone were thorough, I sure would have liked to have a list of all of the characters to reference when someone who hadn’t been seen in a while popped back up again. There were a few times when I had trouble remembering certain people who played small roles in the plot because of how many other folks there were to keep track of as well.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about this story was trying to figure out who Azrael really was and how he’d evaded the authorities for so long. This wasn’t an easy mystery to unravel. There were a sufficient number of clues to work with, but they didn’t appear right away and all of them required the readers to think critically about what we’d just read.

The first book in this series was in the young adult genre, but this standalone sequel took a much darker and adult-oriented turn. While the many references to child trafficking and pedophilia did not include any scenes of a child being sexually abused, such disturbing subject matter is really only appropriate for an adult audience.

The Undernet 2: Azrael should be read by anyone who is in the mood for a dark mystery.

She pushed open the restroom door to leave and stopped in her tracks. Collins was leaning against the wall with his hands folded in front of him, a small smile playing around his lips. Lexi felt her pulse ratchet up a notch and her breath catch. But she’d be damned if she let him see that. “Fancy meeting you again this afternoon,” she teased. “Did you and Sarabeth finish working the room?”

Collins laughed softly. “Was it that obvious? I thought I was being friendly to my daughter’s friends and family.”

“You were that, sure.” Lexi felt a smile curve her lips. “But yes, you were working the room, exactly as you did at Kylie’s wedding. You’re good at it, Collins. But you need to find a friendlier sidekick. Sarabeth is a little too…shall we say, selectively friendly.”

Collins had the grace to wince. “Out of the mouth of babes and Lexi Barstow. You couldn’t varnish the truth if you had to.”

“No, I couldn’t. Never did, never will. Sorry about that.”

“Honesty isn’t a bad thing.” He paused and appeared to be taking a deep breath. “Go out with me tonight, Lexi,” he asked suddenly. His smile widened. “I’d like to take you out on the town.”

Lexi stared at him in shock. That was the last thing she expected to hear from him. “Just like that?”

“Just like that.”

She didn’t try to hide her surprise. “Why?”

“Why does any man want to take out a beautiful woman?” He stepped closer and took her hand. “Because he wants to be in her company, that’s why. Because he’d like to sit across the table from her and enjoy some good conversation and a medium-rare steak.” He looked her in the eye. “I’ve been alone now for four years and divorced for two of them. I’ve spent a lot of time by myself and it gets damned lonely. Let’s go out tonight, Lexi. I’d love to spend an evening with you.”

Lexi’s heart thudded in her throat at his touch. She felt herself shiver as memories flooded her mind of how his hands had caressed her those long years ago. Common sense told her that going out with him would be a bad idea. Common sense reminded her that Collins Wentworth was nothing but trouble. It seemed that her body felt otherwise.

Ike and Kay by James MacManus – Spotlight

Long and Short Reviews welcomes James MacManus, the author of the recently released Ike and Kate. Leave a comment or ask the author a question for a chance to win one of five copies of the book (contest closes June 4 – US/Canada only).

The sweeping love story at the heart of the Second World War, vividly reimagining General Eisenhower and Kate Summersby’s infamous, star-crossed affair

In his latest historical novel Ike and Kay, acclaimed author James MacManus brings to life an unbelievably true and controversial romance and the poignant characters and personalities that shaped the course of world history.

In 1942, Kay Summersby’s life is changed forever when she is conscripted to drive General Eisenhower on his fact-finding visit to wartime London. Despite Eisenhower’s marriage to Mamie, the pair takes an immediate liking to each other and he buys Kay a rare wartime luxury: a box of chocolates.

So begins a tumultuous relationship that, against all military regulation, sees Kay traveling with Eisenhower on missions to far-flung places before the final assault on Nazi Germany. The general does dangerously little to conceal his affair with the woman widely known as “Ike’s shadow,” and in letters Mamie bemoans his new obsession with “Ireland.” That does not stop him from using his influence to grant Kay citizenship and rank in the US army, drawing her closer still when he returns to America. When officials discover Eisenhower’s plans to divorce from his wife they threaten the fragile but passionate affair, and Kay is forced to take desperate measures to hold onto the man she loves . . .

Based on the scandalous true story of General Eisenhower’s secret World War II love affair, Ike and Kay is a compelling story of love, duty, sacrifice, and heartbreak, set against the backdrop of the most tumultuous period of the twentieth century.

So Marshall thought Eisenhower was having an affair with her and couldn’t bring himself to say so? Well, he wasn’t. All right, he had kissed her. Plenty of times in fact. And he had held her close, feeling her body against his. Back in Kansas when he was young his parents would have called that making love.

But that was then. Now a kiss was just a kiss. It wasn’t an affair. Did he want to have an affair with her? Hell, yes – who wouldn’t? She was more than just an attractive woman. She meant a great deal to him. But he was a soldier. He knew his duty. And George Marshall should know his. Which was to leave him to get on with this war and stop worrying about what the gossips back home were saying.

Eisenhower told himself that was a sensible and logical reaction to an out of line intrusion into the way he ran the war. But there was another small voice which told him that Marshall might have had a point. He had feelings for Kay Summersby, he could hardly deny that.

They had kissed and would kiss again. The taste of her lips and the scent of her forbidden perfume lingered like a long sunset. Kay and her perfume were supposed to be against the rules, beyond reach. Maybe that was why he wanted her so much.

Or maybe it was the war. The casualty reports crossed his desk every morning. He dreaded those documents. The dead were not just numbers on paper. He had seen their bodies in the field, young men with bodies ripped open, their entrails spilling onto the earth, others gazing sightlessly at the sky without a mark on them but very dead.

He had seen men die in the forward nursing stations, some while they struggled to speak to him or shake his hand. No man could look on such sights without silent shame, rage and the fearful knowledge that there were many more deaths to come.
That is why he needed her, to help him escape, even for moments, from the battle orders and the death and destruction that followed.

“Harrington.” Mr. Gavin Turley, the eldest son of Viscount Turley, hailed Geoff as he stepped through the door. “Haven’t seen you in weeks. What have you been up to?”

“I’ve been with my father.” He sat in the large leather chair on the other side of a low table. A footman brought him a cup of tea, and he took a sip. It was comfortable being known in a club well enough that they knew what a fellow drank. Coffee might smell good, but he couldn’t stand the taste. He thought of not mentioning his most pressing dilemma, but he was desperate. “If you must know, I’m in the market for a wife.”

Turley stared at Geoff for a few moments, then turned his attention to the teacup that he twisted around before looking up again. “Are you indeed?”

“Yes.” Geoff nodded. “And quickly. You might have heard . . . Well, it is no matter.” There was no need for the whole world to hear from him how shoddily he had been treated by Lady Charlotte. Making sure that others knew he wished to marry, however, was prudent. After all, he was an eligible match for any lady.

“Tell you what,” Turley said, leaning forward. “Come around to my father’s house this afternoon on Green Street and join us for tea.” Turley raised a dark blond brow. “If you don’t have other plans, that is.”

An image of a lady with the same light flaxen hair came to Geoff’s mind. Lady Charlotte had introduced him to Miss Turley. The sister of Mr. Turley and the daughter of Viscount Turley. “Do I recall correctly that you have a sister who is out?”

“You do.” He leaned back in the dark brown leather chair. “She is enjoying her first Season. She is very pretty—at least I think so—and amiable as well. Even when I try her temper, she manages not to give me a bear garden jaw.”

He debated telling the man that he had already been introduced, but decided not to. Joining Miss Turley for tea was as good a place as any to begin, Geoff supposed. “I have no other obligations. In fact, I would be delighted.”

THE MAKING OF A NOVEL

“I couldn’t put it down! Those words are some of the most satisfying comments an author can receive. Nothing pleases me more than a note from someone grumbling about staying up late to finish one of my books.

It’s music to my ears.

There are lots of ways to earn those precious words. Writing a fast-paced novel is one of them. It is certainly my goal every time I start a new book.

My latest, BEYOND CONTROL, was no different. I knew I would be writing Joshua Cain’s story, Lincoln Cain’s brother from BEYOND REASON. I had introduced Josh in that story so I knew what he was like–smart, strong, determined, former military. Totally hot. I always try to find the hero’s perfect match and though at first Victoria Bradford, raisng a four-year-old daughter, seemed unlikely, as the tale moved forward I could tell they would perfectly suit.

If they survived the terrible ordeal they were facing.

I like to read books that draw me in and won’t let go, books I can’t wait to pick up again to find out what’s going to happen next.

There are a lot of ways writers can create those kinds of stories. Pairing down description makes the story move faster–or as Elmore Leonard said, “I try to leave out the parts people skip.” Often the scenes are set in familiar places that don’t require much description.

A Hollywood movie trick is enter late and leave early. It means jumping right into the scene–leaving out the, “Hello, how are you?” “I’m fine, how are you?”

Hooks at the beginning and end of chapters are helpful. It’s a technique I try to use, though some authors end a chapter in the middle of the action to keep you turning the pages.

I’ve found I do a lot of characterization by showing how the hero, heroine, and sub characters react to a situation. For instance, I don’t don’t care what the heroine did in high school unless it’s important to how she’ll solve the problem in which she is currently involved.

But every author has his own method of developing a novel.

In BEYOND CONTROL, Victoria Bradford and her four-year old daughter are on the run from Tory’s abusive ex-fiancé. Seventy miles north of Dallas, the Iron River Ranch is pretty much nowhere, exactly what Josh Cain wanted when he came back from Afghanistan. Big skies, quiet nights, no trouble.

One look tells Josh the pretty redhead who showed up on his door with her adorable little girl will give him trouble of the most personal kind. But Josh has seen trouble before, and he doesn’t scare easy. Not when “accidents” start happening around the ranch. Not when Tory’s best friend is abducted.

Not even when it looks like their current problems are only just the beginning.

I hope you’ll watch for BEYOND CONTROL and that you enjoy it. All best wishes and happy reading, Kat

Victoria Bradford drove the old blue Chevy Malibu along the two lane road. Up ahead, a sign hung above a narrow dirt track running off to the west, IRON RIVER RANCH.

“Are we there yet, Mama?” Ivy, her four year old daughter, had asked at a dozen times since they’d left the Walmart parking lot in Iron Springs. The ten mile drive didn’t take long, but to a four year old who’d been in the car for days, they couldn’t reach their destination soon enough.

“We’re very close, sweetheart. This is the turn, right here.” Tory checked the gas gauge as the wheels left the pavement and started rumbling over the bumpy dirt road. Less than an eighth of a tank. She hoped the ranch wasn’t much farther.

More than that, she prayed the job hadn’t already been filled.

She sighed as the aging Malibu rolled along. She was basically in bumfrick Egypt, ten miles north of Nowhere Springs, almost out of gas, with twenty three dollars and thirty three cents in her wallet.

Last night, without enough money for a motel room and afraid to use her credit cards for fear Damon would somehow track her, they’d slept in the car in the Walmart parking lot. As soon as the McDonald’s opened, she had pulled into the drive-thru and bought Sausage McMuffins, then driven out to the ranch to somehow convince the owner to hire a woman with a daughter and no actual ranching experience.

She thought of the ad in the paper she had spotted last night on the counter in the Iron Springs Café. If she somehow managed to get the job, it would be perfect. Besides a steady paycheck and the ranch being way off the grid, the position included the use of a double-wide trailer.

After being on the road for the past three weeks, living out of motel rooms and suitcases, the trailer sounded like a palace.
“Look, Mama, there it is!” Ivy pointed toward the cluster of buildings up ahead, a couple of barns, several fenced training arenas, and a two-story home with dormer windows and a covered porch running the length out in front. A double-wide sat fifty yards away.

Vast stretches of open green pastureland surrounded the complex where horses and cattle grazed, and there were ponds and woodlands in the distance, and dense copses of trees.

While he has been given the honor of being among the Communion of Saints, his mother has to be right there next to him, sharing the glory (The Cause for the Canonization of Margaret Bosco has been opened. deeprootsmag.org super cheap viagra viagra online overnight Inability to have erection in man during sexual intercourse is referred as ED. No use wasting what little gas she had left.

“Mama, there’s a man over there by the barn.”

Her gaze swung in that direction. There was, indeed, a man. The noisy buzz of a saw covered the sound of their arrival, giving her time to assess him.

Shirtless, he was working with his back to them, broad, tanned, and muscled above a narrow waist that disappeared into a pair of faded jeans. The jeans hugged a round behind and long, powerful legs.

He was tall, she saw when he straightened away from his work and walked into the barn, with medium brown hair cut short. She got her first look at his face when he walked back out, handsome, with a solid jaw and masculine features, at least three days’ growth of whiskers.

The front of him was just as impressive as the back, a broad chest with solid pecs, muscular biceps, and six pack abs.
Unease filtered through her. This was a strong, powerful male. She knew first hand what a man like that could do to a woman.

Tory forced down the notion. Not all men were like Damon. Before she’d met him, she had been married to a good and decent man, the father of her child. Jamie Bradford, her high school sweetheart, was one of the gentlest people she’d ever known. Her father was a good man, before he’d fallen in love with his secretary and divorced her mother, leaving the two of them alone.

Tory took a courage-building breath. “Stay here, sweetheart.” Cracking open the car door, she slid out from behind the wheel. “Don’t worry, sweetie. Everything’s going to be okay.”

She hoped.

Ivy sank down in her booster seat, trying to make herself invisible. Tory had survived the fights, arguments, and finally the brutal beating Damon had given her that had put her in the hospital. Though he had never hurt Ivy, the little girl had seen the results of his mistreatment, leaving her with an unnatural fear of men.

Tory glanced at the big, thick-chested male striding toward her, shrugging into a blue denim shirt. Ivy would be terrified of him. If there was any other way, she would climb back in the car and just drive away.

There wasn’t. Tory started walking, meeting the man half way. She glanced around but didn’t see a soul besides the big man in front of her. Her uneasiness returned but she forced it away.

“May I help you?” he asked, and she thought that at least he was polite.

“My name is Tory Ford. I’m looking for Joshua Cain. Is that you?” He had blue eyes and a cleft in his chin. From a purely physical standpoint, the man was flat out hot.

“I’m Josh Cain. What can I do for you?”

“I saw your ad in the Iron Springs Gazette. You’re looking for a stable hand. I’m here to apply for the job.”

He just shook his head. “I’m afraid it’s a man’s job, Ms. Ford. Mucking out stalls and cleaning tack, feeding the livestock. It isn’t something you’d want to do.”

“Work isn’t supposed to be fun, Mr. Cain. That’s why they call it work. I can muck out stalls, clean tack, and feed stock as well as anyone else.”

“Sorry. I’m looking for a man. I appreciate you’re coming out, but–“

“There are laws, Mr. Cain. Equal rights for women. Have you never heard of that? Lawsuits against discrimination?”

His jaw hardened. His eyebrows came down in a frown. “Are you kidding me? You’re going to sue me because I won’t hire you to shovel horseshit out of the barn?”

Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Worlds I’d Never Want to Live In

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

There are many bookish worlds out there that are quite entertaining to read about but wouldn’t actually be very nice places to live in for all sorts of different reasons. Since I love post-apocalyptic fiction and other dark genres so much, I could have made this list twice as long if I weren’t restricted to only picking ten examples.

1.  England from P.D. James’ The Children of Men.

While a world without children would be a terrible place to live in general, what made this futuristic version of England truly horrifying was how hopeless it had become. Suicide had become so commonplace and accepted that painless ways of doing it were routinely advertised on television in the film version of this tale. I found that quite disturbing.

2. Panem from Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games.

As if the widespread malnutrition and violence in many of the districts wasn’t dangerous enough, there was also the risk of being sent to your almost-certain death in The Hunger Games every year for the teenage members of this society. There’s no way I’d ever want to live in any of these districts, especially the poorest ones.

3. The entire planet of Earth from Douglas Adam’s The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Earth is generally a pretty nice place to live in our universe, but in this book it’s demolished to make room for a galactic freeway very early on in the plot. I was pretty surprised by that twist, and I was only more surprised by what happened afterwards.

4. Winterfell from George R.R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones.

Based on what I’ve read about this series, people regularly died violently in this kingdom. I’m not at all good at sword fighting, so I think my chances of being one of the folks who didn’t survive would be even higher than normal for this world.

5. Oceania from George Orwell’s 1984.

As if living in a brutal and totalitarian society wouldn’t be frightening enough, the dark ending of this book would make me even more scared to go anywhere near Oceania. Let’s just say that their government was so powerful that there was nothing it couldn’t accomplish.

At present, there are treatments available prescription viagra cost for treating such impotence issue.
6. America from Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.

While it’s never a good idea to live in a country that oppresses human rights, the fact that this futuristic version of the United States banned reading books made me hate it even more than I would have otherwise. I can’t imagine going an entire lifetime without being allowed to read stories.

7. China (and then the entire world!) from Max Brooks’ World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War.

Granted, zombie apocalypses are never great places to live in general, but what makes this book even more disturbing than the typical example of this genre was how long it took China and the rest of the world to even admit that there was a problem in the first place.

If they’d fought back and freely shared everything they knew about how this infection spread as soon as the dead began to rise, the outbreak probably could have been contained fairly easily.

8. The Greater German Reich from Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle.

In this alternate history novel, The Nazis won World War II and took possession of a massive portion of the United States. Needless to say, life under their regime wasn’t a happy experience for anyone. The Nazis continued to murder people who were Jewish, disabled, part of the LGBT community, and anyone else they decided wasn’t worth keeping alive.

9. Post-apocalyptic Chicago from Veronica Roth’s Divergent.

Everyone in this world was divided into one of the five different factions of their society depending on that person’s personality and interests.

To be honest with you, none of the factions sounded like good places to live. Some members of their society were deprived of the opportunity to make the simplest choices for themselves like what to wear. Others risked violent deaths ever day for no reason at all. I wouldn’t have wanted to choose any of the five options available to the characters.

10. The army base from M.R. Carey’s The Girl with All the Gifts.

As much as I love the idea of a child character who is far more special and dangerous than she first appears to be, the world she lived in was incredibly chaotic. There is no way I would have ever been safe there because there were no safe places left anywhere at all.

What bookish worlds would you never want to live in?

The future could be a very grim place for anyone who isn’t wealthy and powerful.

The world building was really well done. Scipio, the main character, lived in a violent, post-apocalyptic society where only the strongest and most cunning people had any chance of survival. It wasn’t a pleasant place to live by any means, but I did have a vivid impression of what it was like to live in a world run by sociopathic criminals. Danger lurked everywhere there. Escaping it completely wasn’t an option, but someone who was intelligent could reduce their chances of dying painfully if they played the game the right way.

It would have been helpful to have the same attention to detail paid to the character development. I wouldn’t expect to spend a lot of time exploring the personalities and backstories of characters in such a strongly plot-based tale, but it would have been nice to get to know them better as individuals before terrible things began happening to and around them.

I loved the plot twists. It was surprising to see how many of them Mr. Larson was able to squeeze into such a short story. He did an excellent job of gently foreshadowing what would happen next without make it easy for his readers to figure everything out in advance. I especially appreciated how much effort he put into showing how inhumanely El Tirano, Scipio’s boss, treated everyone around him. That clue could have easily given the audience too much or too little information about what was coming next, but the author handled it perfectly.
