This wasn’t like any western I’ve ever read before. The thought of mixing cowboys with space aliens made me grin. I was curious to see how these genres would merge together, and I was pleased with how the author found ways to show just how bizarre the idea of a flying ship from a faraway planet would be to the average person who lived in the nineteenth century and knew almost nothing about science.

I found the storyline hard to follow. While I knew going in that it wasn’t going to be told in a chronological order, there weren’t enough hints about when all of the scenes took place for me to keep them straight in my mind. Remembering which scene was supposed to first made it difficult for me to enjoy the plot in general. I kept mixing up the order of events, and that made the reading process a frustrating one.

The characters were interesting. I liked the fact that the descriptions of them were so vivid and detailed. It made it easy to remember who everyone was and how they knew one another no matter if they were the protagonist or someone who only appeared in the plot a handful of times. Reading the narrator’s descriptions of the people who crossed his path was also a fun way to get to know his personality and values based on what he did and didn’t like about the folks around him.

Faster Gun should be read by anyone who has ever wished there were more aliens and spaceships in the wild west of the 1800s.

Nico Grabar, head of one of the most ruthless cartels in the world, is in the last stretch of a two-year nightmare. His agenda is full. He has a criminal organization to run. A cover to maintain. A promise to fulfill. Too bad he’s bleeding to death in the middle of nowhere, about to meet his Maker on a deserted street. A fitting ending to a bleak existence, really.

A beautiful bride, dressed in a thrift-store wedding gown with raccoon eyes and a choke collar, and covered from head to military boots in blood, rescues him. It’s the Grim Reaper, made over just for him. What an honor.

Seriously. Who finds a frigging drug lord in serious need of resuscitation while coming back from a bachelorette party during the wee hours? Paige, aka Goth waitress at Rositas and a magnet for psychopaths, of course.

The last she needs is to have to play Florence Nightingale to a dangerous kingpin. What if he dies on her?

Or worse–what if he doesn’t?

Paige is a strong woman, but has been hurt before by people who were supposed to love her.

I did not think at all that Nico would be able to get her to open up. But with every meeting I knew they would end up together. I just had to find out how they would do it.

Nico is a drug lord who finds himself betrayed or attacked. Vulnerable, he does not expect a ‘Goth princess’ to come and save him. But that is exactly what happened.

The back story was really touching and the build-up to that made me want not want to end the book. However, the book was a good sized for the story. Not too long or short, with enough expressions, actions and chemistry embedded in it to satisfy me. Hard Limits is an erotic romance about working through Paige’s hard limits and healing completely. It was a touching as well sizzling hot romance.

The book is part of a series, which I had an inkling of when going into it. I do think it stood up by itself very well.

I did love the secondary characters that made this more fun and occasionally comedic.

For romance lovers who love the mafia romances, this is a must read.

Thanks for having me here today to celebrate my new release: Angels Rising. Stay tuned until the end for a giveaway!

Top 5: Things you like doing when you aren’t writing

5. Reading – I guess this seems obvious for a writer. I like to read! I read in all genres, including romance, science fiction, fantasy, and YA. I read over 70 YA books last year.

4. Walking my dog – My dog is getting up there in years. He turned 13 last December, but he still acts like a puppy. He just sleeps a lot more. I enjoy taking him for walks around the neighborhood. It’s a great way to work out a plot problem. Just me and the dog and nature.

3. Crocheting – I don’t knit, but I have been crocheting since I was about four years old. Most of our blankets are crocheted, and some were even made by my grandmother.

It takes me about a year to make a good queen sized blanket. And I’ve noticed that dogs seem to love crocheted blankets. We have a few that the dog has claimed. They belong to him now.

I was sitting at my computer chair with one of his blankets on my lap, and the dog came up to me, and pawed at the blanket until it fell off my lap, and then he sat on it.

Like I said, it’s his blanket now.

2. Learning new things- I always like learning about something new. Whether that means reading a book about it, or taking a class, I just want to always expand my mind. So of course I’ve decided to pick up a Master’s degree in creative writing…3 credits down, 45 to go!

1. Escape Rooms! I’ve done over 75 escape rooms over the past two years. If you don’t know what they are, Escape Rooms are a fairly new form of entertainment. You are ‘locked’ in a room and have an hour to find clues and solve puzzles in order to escape.

I’ve done so many fun rooms. Rooms where we’ve had to escape from serial killers. Others where we’ve pretended to be explorers and find our way out of a pharaoh’s tomb. One of my favorite rooms was the one themed like a 1980s video store, where the object was to break in and rescue the VHS tape you forgot to rewind so you don’t get hit with a rewind fee. It was hilariously funny and so creative.

I could probably write a whole lot more about escape rooms, so instead, I’ll let you know that I’m giving away four $10 Dreamspinner gift certificates.

Better to reign in hell….

Uriel 3019 has been a cybernetically altered angel since he volunteered for the program fifteen years ago. His devotion to the floating city of Heaven is fierce, and he’ll follow any command he’s given. But Uriel’s orderly world is crumbling. Angels are going mad, even hurting people. Some are rebelling, and the noble families are vying for control—by any means necessary.

Uriel’s latest assignment brings him into a secret society, where his partner, Raphael, is working for freedom and equality for all angels. Could their group be responsible for the angels’ recent erratic behavior? Uriel is determined to find out—and report on his findings. But he doesn’t count on Raphael’s confession—that he has feelings for Uriel—or the memories slowly starting to return from the time before he became an angel.

Is he on the right side? Does he dare to stand against Heaven, even if doing so will save his fellow angels from becoming soulless automatons? Uriel has to decide if his loyalty belongs to his superiors… or to the angel who’s stolen his heart.

About the Author: CC Bridges is a mild-mannered librarian by day, but by night she writes about worlds of adventure and romance. When she’s not busy solving puzzles in an escape room, she can be found diving into comics or binge-watching superhero movies. She writes surrounded by books, spare computing equipment, a fluffy dog, and a long-suffering husband in the state of New Jersey. In 2011, she won a Rainbow Award for best gay sci-fi/futuristic novel.

Drama Fraternity by Joe Cosentino – Q&A

Long and Short Reviews welcomes back Joe Cosentino who is celebrating the recent release of Drama Fraternity, the sixth book in the Nicky and Noah mystery series.

Welcome back, Joe! Thank you for visiting with us today about the sixth novel in your award-winning Nicky and Noah mystery series.

It’s my pleasure. I love talking about Nicky and Noah. Since they’re always in my head, I enjoy talking to them as well.

For the few readers who may not be familiar with your Nicky and Noah mystery series, tell us about the series and how it came to be.

When I was a kid I had terrible insomnia. Believe it or not, what finally cured me was reading Sherlock Holmes mysteries and Agatha Christie novels. I became absorbed with analyzing the clues, sifting through the red herrings, and marveling at the brilliant detectives’ powers of deduction as I sharpened my own little gray cells. Even at a young age, I suspected that Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson were more than roommates, which made reading the series even more fun. Unfortunately, given the times in which those books were written, none of the characters were openly gay. As a matter of fact, there are very few gay cozy mystery series. So I decided to change that.

I was sitting in my office at the college, where I am department chair and theatre professor, reflecting on my long, eventful day. It suddenly hit me like a fallen stage light. The theatre department on a college campus is rife with humor, romance, intrigue, mystery, and surprises. The Nicky and Noah mystery series was born.

What do you mean by a cozy mystery series?

In the case of the Nicky and Noah mysteries, the setting is warm and cozy, the clues and murders (and laughs) come fast and furious, and there are enough plot twists and turns and a surprise ending to keep the pages turning faster than a hooker with a curfew. At the center is a touching gay romance between Associate Professor of Directing Nicky Abbondanza and Assistant Professor of Acting Noah Oliver. As Nicky and Noah fall in love, I’ve heard the readers fall in love with them too.

Tell us a bit about the first five novels in the series.

In Drama Queen (Divine Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award for Favorite LGBT Mystery, Humorous, and Contemporary Novel of the Year) college theatre professors are dropping like stage curtains at Treemeadow College, and amateur sleuths/college theatre professors Nicky and Noah have to use their theatre skills, including impersonating other people, to figure out whodunit. Reviewers called Drama Queen hysterically funny farce, Murder She Wrote meets Hart to Hart meets The Hardy Boys, and a captivating whodunit. Who am I to argue? One reviewer wrote Drama Queen was the funniest book she’d ever read!

In Drama Muscle (Rainbow Award Honorable Mention) Nicky and Noah don their gay Holmes and Watson personas again to find out why bodybuilding students and professors at Treemeadow are dropping faster than barbells. Also, Nicky and Noah’s relationship reaches a milestone by the end of the novel.

In Drama Cruise it is summer on a ten-day cruise from San Francisco to Alaska and back. Nicky and Noah must figure out why college theatre professors are dropping like life rafts as Nicky directs a murder mystery dinner theatre show onboard ship starring Noah and other college theatre professors from across the US. Complicating matters are their both sets of wacky parents who want to embark on all the activities on and off the boat with the handsome couple.

In Drama Luau, Nicky is directing the luau show at the Maui Mist Resort and he and Noah need to figure out why muscular Hawaiian hula dancers are dropping like grass skirts. Their department head/best friend and his husband, Martin and Ruben, are along for the bumpy tropical ride.

In Drama Detective, Nicky is directing and ultimately co-starring with his husband Noah as Holmes and Watson in a new musical Sherlock Holmes play at Treemeadow College prior to Broadway. Martin and Ruben, their sassy office assistant Shayla, Nicky’s brother Tony, and Nicky and Noah’s son Taavi are also in the cast. Of course dead bodies begin falling over like hammy actors at a curtain call. Once again Nicky and Noah use their drama skills to figure out who is lowering the street lamps on the actors before the handsome couple get half-baked on Baker Street.

And your current release?

Now in Drama Fraternity, Nicky is directing Tight End Scream Queen, a slasher movie filmed at Treemeadow College’s football fraternity house, co-starring Noah, Taavi, Martin, and Shayla. Rounding out the cast are members of Treemeadow’s Christian football players’ fraternity along with two hunky screen stars. When the quarterback, jammer, wide receiver, and more begin fading out with their scenes, Nicky and Noah once again need to use their drama skills to figure out who is sending young hunky actors to the cutting room floor before Nicky and Noah hit the final reel.

Having acted in films and on television myself, I know first-hand the world of moviemaking. Though I never appeared in a slasher film, I admit those movies have long been a favorite film genre for me as an audience member. The combination of quirky characters, humorous dialogue, heart pounding suspense, and twist endings always leaves me wanting more. So I couldn’t resist lampooning them a bit in this latest Nicky and Noah mystery novel. I’m sure that anyone who loves slasher movies as much as I do will really enjoy this novel. And it’s all the more fun for Nicky and Noah mystery fans, because the movie is shot at Treemeadow College!

Can you give us a run down on some of the characters?

Nicky and Noah are joined by favorite regular characters like Martin, Ruben, Shayla, Taavi, Detective Manuello, Nicky’s parents, and Noah’s parents. Book six adds a number of captivating new characters like Alejandro Gallo, the handsome and muscular star (who plays a vampire on TV’s Suck Off) cast as the detective in the film. There’s also hunky heartthrob (of the film Full Moon) who plays the lead role of Davey Doubt, the football team’s taunted and misunderstood tight end. And I can’t leave out the adorable and shy young screenwriter, Robert Lee, who penned Davey Doubt’s story based on his own.

Do you envision any of those celebrities in a television series adaptation of the Nicky and Noah mysteries?

I can see Rosie O’Donnell and Bruce Willis playing Noah’s funny parents, and Nathan Lane as Martin Anderson’s (the department head’s) spouse. I want to play Martin Anderson! Wanda Sykes would be a riot as Martin’s office assistant, Shayla.
I also think Matt Bomer and Neil Patrick Harris would be terrific as Nicky and Noah. (I think Matt Bomer would be terrific in anything!) Joe Manganiello would be perfect as Nicky’s brother, Tony (or any role). I can also see Valerie Bertinelli and Jay Leno as Nicky’s parents. Rather than Logo showing reruns of Golden Girls around the clock, and Bravo airing so called reality shows, I would love to see them do The Nicky and Noah Mysteries. Come on, TV producers, make your offers!

Who was your favorite character to write in Drama Fraternity?

Nicky is so adorable. I love his never say die attitude, wit, smarts, and perseverance in the face of adversity. He is genuinely concerned for others, and will do anything to solve a murder mystery. Finally, he is a one-man man, and Nicky is proud to admit that man is Noah Oliver. My favorite new character in book six is Robert Lee, the adorable, shy young screenwriter of Tight End Scream Queen. His crush on Malcolm Kahue, the hunky star of the slasher film, is touching and heartwarming.

Who was the easiest character to write in book six?

Ruben and Martin, since they are based on my spouse and me. I love Martin’s paternal instincts toward Nicky and Noah, sense of theatricality, and his inquiring mind. I also like how Ruben keeps Martin in line with hysterical barbs. The older couple stay sharp by engaging in their verbal warfare, but it’s all done in deep admiration and respect. Finally, it’s wonderful to see an elderly couple so much in love (uncommon in the entertainment field), and how they can read each other like a book—no pun intended.

Which character do you like the least in book six?

I started out not liking Alejandro Gallo, the TV star playing the hot detective in the slasher film. He seems conceited and always on the make. But the more I wrote him, I realized he was a closet gay actor terrified of losing his heart throb status if his fans were to find out the truth about him. It must have been quite a heavy burden for him to hold. It’s always so much more difficult to hide and lie than to simply be yourself.

Which character was the hardest to write?

Comey Collins and Pastor Karl Bounty. I will never understand how people can use “religious freedom” to try to take away the civil rights of LGBT people and their families. Religious freedom means having the freedom to practice whatever religious you choose, not disobey the law and/or persecute others.

Which character was the sexiest?

Definitely Malcolm Kahue, the handsome, muscular, Hawaiian, rebel without a cause actor playing the leading role of Davey Doubt, the tight end, in the slasher film. Like Robert Lee, the screenwriter in the novel, I think readers will be quite captivated with Malcolm.

The well-meaning and meddlesome Mr. and Mrs. Aden want nothing more than to protect their only daughter, Hannah.

After her childhood kidnapping in Somalia and a final showdown in Italy against the monster responsible, nineteen-year-old Hannah just wants back the life stolen from her.

She isn’t naïve like her mother believes. Frequent flashes of past terrors assure her that the healing process is far from over. At the same time, she’d hardly use her dad’s words and call herself “strong” or “brave.” That description belongs to Melissa Bennett, the woman who almost died saving her.

Melissa doesn’t feel much like the hero she’s being hailed.

While she is glad to have saved a life for once, the one she’d almost taken continues to haunt her dreams and stall her recovery.

Despite her good deed and continuous help from friends and family abroad and Kyle—the father of her little girl—she knows her days of freedom are numbered.

This story is an exciting family saga wrapped up in a small package with lots of characters and dramas in a little space. Though it is one installment in a bigger tale, for the most part, one can understand what is going on. Being thrown into the middle of the action is not an issue excepting the occasional confusing moment.

Hannah was kidnapped and harmed but later saved. She and other characters have painful emotional journeys to go through. The author does a great job at helping his readers understand just what this feels like for each of these characters. Some must recover from damaging things done to them, must overcome self-doubt, and some must work out regret. These people are growing. They are complex, and we come to understand them.

This very emotional tale was written to reflect the immediacy of feelings. The conversations are insightful. The action is told through the dialogue though. If one wants action, it comes with this story, but not first hand. It’s all in the remembering.

There are some spicy scenes but not with new or hoped for love. Rather, these scenes are about happily married couples. Trust issues are examined and sometimes in charming and unexpected ways. This little story was worth the read.

Until There Was Us is a sweet second chance romance novel.

Although this was not my usual type of story, that does not mean that I did not like it. I found it well written and I loved that the characters were well developed, complex and three dimensional.

Until There Was Us is a family saga and what I do not typically enjoy about family sagas is the meddling of overprotective parents, and this novel had plenty of scenes of them. Also, this is the 7th story in the Montgomery Brothers series but by the time I realized that, I already liked the story too much not to finish it. Although the story can be read as a standalone, Until There Was Us features many recurring characters from previous installments whose stories I did not know.

In the first half of the novel, the hero and heroine overcame most of their problems but there was a little bit of drama at the end which showed just how much the hero and heroine were meant for one another. The pace of the story was a bit uneven and there were parts with too much description that slowed the story down; but there were plenty of parts that I enjoyed very much.

If readers follow and like the Montgomery Brothers series then this is a story for you. Also, if you like romances that contains large, loud and meddling families, this is definitely the story for you.

I have a confession to make – I am actually looking forward to reading the next installment in the Montgomery Brothers series. I hope it will be Christian’s story because I would love to see his HEA.

The science in this tale fascinated me. I especially enjoyed the sections that talked about all of the damage dark energy could do to someone if they were exposed to it for too long or if they didn’t seek treatment for shorter bursts of exposure. It was also interesting to see how the authorities behaved when they found someone who had been badly infected with dark energy and couldn’t respond to treatment any longer.

I had a lot of trouble keeping track of who all of the characters were because of how many of them were running around and how little time there was to explore their personalities. It was especially difficult for me to adjust to new perspective when the scenes moved from one group to characters to another. Since not everyone was in the same area during most of the plot, jumping around among so many different locations only made my confusion worse about who was who.

Robots have already taken over simple and repetitive jobs in our time, but they’ve learned how to do much more complex work in this futuristic world. I was surprised by how intelligent these machines were and how much they were capable of. They almost behaved like sentient human beings. The tasks they took on were things that people normally need to study for years in order to fully understand, so I was impressed that robots were able to figure out how to respond in situations that required so much knowledge and understanding of how to quickly adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.

This is part of a series, but it can be read on its own or out of order.

Favorite Comics by Marguerite Labbe – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Marguerite Labbe who is visiting with us to celebrate the recent release of A Little Side of Geek.

Favorite Comics

You can’t write about comic book conventions, writers, and artists without talking about your favorites. For the record, one of Morris’s favorite artists is Neal Adams a creator of Ra’s al Ghul, who is a top villain for Morris. For all of his disavowal of geek interests, Theo has a soft spot for Spider-Man and a love for Morris’s comic Beneath the Surface which Morris describes as Dora the Explorer meets Scooby-Doo with a dash of ESP.

I didn’t get into Batman comics like Morris, though I did love the animated TV series and movies. But I have read some. One of my favorites is Gotham by Gaslight where Batman takes on Jack the Ripper. And I’ve been meaning to pick up Tom King’s Grayson and Batman runs. But I haven’t done that yet.

Since I’m writing about a comic book writer/artist, I wanted to give a shout out to some of the series that shaped me as a writer over the years.

My husband Keir introduced me to comics before we were first dating in the early years of high school. He used to go to weekend comic book conventions back when they were held in small hotel spaces and it was a room of dealers with long-boxes of comics. There may be a couple of mid-tier artists who attended, but not many. Keir and a friend and came back with the entire run of X-Men’s X-Cutioner’s Song. I read it and was hooked on X-Men throughout the rest of high school.

In college, I discovered Joseph Michael Lisner’s Dawn. I hung out at Keir’s dorm all the time and a friend down the hall had a poster of her up on his wall and it intrigued me. I cannot tell you how much I loved everything about that character. She is the goddess of birth and rebirth and her lover is Cernunnos, the god of Death. I liked Lisner’s stuff so much, that I urged Keir to take a trip with me to Pittsburgh to meet Lisner one weekend and Keir had to remind me that we couldn’t go because that was the weekend we were getting married. Eventually, I did manage to meet Lisner. I have his Dawn: Lucifer’s Halo, Dawn: Return of the Goddess, and Dawn: Three Tiers mini-series signed by him at home.

After we were married, Keir introduced me to Watchmen and I became an Alan Moore fan. The neat thing about comics is that it’s not just the about the written story. The artwork takes on its own life and in the case of The Watchman the work that the colorist John Higgins did added so much to the whole atmosphere of the tale. I think that was the first time I consciously noticed details like that beyond just enjoying the outcome. If you’ve only ever seen the movie and not read the comic I strongly urge you to do so. Because I also loved the story within the story that is missing from the movie and adds to the whole.

I was introduced to Neil Gaiman through his Sandman series which to this day still remains a personal favorite. I think it may have been a Christmas gift from my husband. In it, Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, is taken prisoner, and it leads him down a really interesting path. It was so neat how all the stories were separate and still part of a whole and I loved the dreamlike quality to the writing. That led me to his book of short stories Fragile Things that I bought for Keir just as he was deciding to launch his own comic book and I was able to get it signed for him. The note from Gaiman encouraging him to take a leap and follow his dreams really made an impact on him.

I think the last series I’ll mention because I could go on all day is Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughan. It was probably the only series not introduced to me by Keir. I got it from a Twitter recommendation. It’s completely different from any other comic I’ve ever read. The superhero, Michael Hundred, questions whether his powers actually have harmed more than helped people and he decides to go into politics instead and is elected Mayor of New York.

Making this list has me wanting to go back and reread all of these as well as pick up new titles that I missed. Please tell me some of your favorite comic series and why you love them. I’m always looking for something new to read.

“Shall we walk along the beach?” Chris asked the ladies.

“Not until I have a piece of Jenny’s cheesecake first,” Heather said.

She opened her mouth wide and took a big bite of the sinful dessert. It almost stuck in her throat as a piercing scream sounded far away. Heather coughed and sputtered as her food went down the wrong way.

“What was that?” Jenny asked as she patted Heather on the back.

“You girls stay here,” Chris ordered. “I’ll go have a look.”

The old biddies had also heard the scream. They surrounded Jenny and Heather, peppering them with questions.

“Hold on, Grandma,” Heather gasped, finally catching her breath. “Chris will be back soon.”

Chris came back five minutes later, looking grim. His face was white with shock.

“Bad news!” he declared, raising his hand to ward off their questions. “There’s a dead body on the beach. Eddie’s grandson almost walked into it.”

Determined to solve Sarah’s murder, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers shocking revelations that could put several lives—including her own—in danger. Can Gilda and the psychic solve this case before the killer strikes again?

Maybe you’d best not miss another of your reunions…

As in the title, this might be different than many reunions you’ve been to, whether a high school or a family reunion. This one happens to be a few high school students and a teacher who was with them long ago, gathering because of murder. Or at least because they think poor Sarah was murdered. They also think their teacher, Gilda, can help them find some answers. Gilda spends some time reflecting on the personalities of the students and also has a difficult time moving past nicknames the kids gave each other back then, most likely behind one another’s backs. Mean Barbie, Wannabe Ken, and as many other Barbies as you can imagine; some nice, most not.

This book was very readable. It’s another in the “Gilda Greco Mystery” series. A lot of the story seemed to be spent describing the characters and at first reflection I thought that might not be construed as an interesting topic. Much of this description was because Gilda spent a lot of time reflecting back on her students. I don’t think any of the in-depth description of the characters was extraneous. Much of the plot was dependent on knowing the characters well to try and determine which one could have killed Sarah, which personality does it take, which person had good luck since graduation, which one had fallen on hard times. I looked at them all in trying to decide and I changed my mind several times. That means the author did a very good job of deception. I bet that was why it was so entertaining.

There are several other books in the Gilda Greco series. Check them out too.
