Summer – The Time to Write
When the year slows down is my time. I love the summer. Okay, I’ll grant you, I’m not a big one for hot weather. 72 and sunny with a few clouds is my perfect time. 100 degrees isn’t my idea of fun, but…the rest of the world is slowing down a bit. I can handle that.

4_Bic_Cristal_pens_and_caps 1 (2)Why? Because I can get the stuff I need to finish done. Like what, you might ask? Well, the stories that are sitting right there, staring at me and begging to be finished. I have this tendency to have a story that’s ready to go, but I don’t have the time to write it. I let it sit and percolate for a while. Usually, when the time comes to start it (or the deadline is that close), I get a burst of energy to finish.

During the summer, I can have those bursts uninterrupted. It’s wonderful. No one pestering me to clean up this or to finish working on that. I can use my time as I see fit. I’ve been able to tackle a longer work that’s been staring at me. I love it. I’ve been able to immerse myself in the characters (have I mentioned they are hot? Yeah, they are.) and get to know exactly what I want to do with them. It’s great.

What about you? What is your favorite part of the summer? Anything you like to do during the warmer months? Let me know. Maybe we can trade notes and I’ll try something new. Grin.

Ansen Moran knew from the beginning that Dylan wasn’t a typical client, but he’s the only Dom willing to tame the actor’s larger-than-life personality. He’s also not fond of actors. Ansen has his heart guarded from Dylan’s charms, but even the best laid plans blow up when emotions take control.

Dylan’s got one shot to learn from the best. Will he manage to please his Dom and realize the role of his life or lose everything in the process?

About the Author:When she’s not writing the stories in her head, Megan Slayer can be found luxuriating in her hot tub with her two vampire Cabana boys, Luke and Jeremy. A bank heist turns sleepy little Wagon Mound, New Mexico on its ear. It’s no straight-forward, demand all the money at gun-point, and run out the front door kind of robbery. It’s a sneaky tunneling that probably took months to complete and put the thieves in a room of safe deposit boxes—not the vault which held some two million. Safe deposit boxes? What could have made it worthwhile to bypass a cool couple million?

Maybe the one hundred and ten year old sapphire and diamond necklace belonging to eighty-five year old Gertrude Kennedy was the lure. United Life and Casualty carried a policy on it for five hundred thousand and sent their investigator, Dan Mahoney to sort things out.

But he didn’t quite get there when expected. Catching a ride when his Jeep overheats, Dan is the hapless passenger in a rollover that kills the driver and puts him in the hospital only to find out this was no accident. Someone wants him out of Wagon Mound at any cost.

He doesn’t scare easily. He hasn’t lived his life looking over his shoulder and he’s not starting now. But when fiancée, Elaine Linden, disappears and people close to the case turn up dead, maybe he should reconsider. The note slipped under his door in the dead of night says it all—“it’s not what you think”.

A superfood is defined as any natural prescription de viagra food that has an extraordinarily high nutrient content, and the acai berry certainly delivers. This medication has been a popular and viagra without prescriptions uk effective erectile dysfunction medicine is now available at any authorized medical store. Massage cialis get viagra and press the spots firmly, until they are no longer tender. It is recommended by sample viagra almost all doctors in the world. / Erectile dysfunction- the most embarrassing and frustrating conditions that a man can face and it has ruined many relationships. In Rollover, author Susan Slater, like a pied piper, lures out the bad characters until the quiet town of Wagon Mound, New Mexico is teeming with them. Not gender, age, social status, familial ties, or professions exempt them from this status. This mystery really kept me guessing. How the author keeps so many clandestine things going on and never drops a thread of the plot makes for page-turning reading.

Rollover starts off in a deceptively ordinary way. There is the not unusual car breakdown on a lonesome road. Even the appearance of an old man in a wreck of a pickup truck is not unusual for that part of the country. However, by the end of chapter one, the mystery has begun and runs full throttle for the rest of the book.

Dan Mahoney, an investigator for an insurance company, sets out to check out and write up his report on a piece of stolen jewelry and ends up embroiled in a complicated mess that has him interviewing everybody from the bank president to the junkyard man. He is not a popular man in that little town.

Elaine Linden, Dan’s special lady, returns from Ireland to be with him when he is hurt. Their romance adds a facet to the story that creates a bit of normalcy among the other facets of the story where it seems everyone else is running amok with secrets and mysterious dealings. Ms. Slater does lead the reader on a merry chase. Trying to keep up with all the happenings is absorbing reading—the primary mystery is a solid thread throughout the novel, but lots of other unsavory, illegal things are happening all over the place.

The author uses the setting to ratchet up the eeriness, mystery, and danger. The incident of the burned car and the body in it is chilling—made me shudder. The people in white working in the dark, the howl of a dog in a lonesome place, etc. stirs the emotions. It seems the author was personally acquainted with the part of New Mexico where Rollover takes place.

Gertrude Kennedy and her stolen Tiffany necklace that is a treasured, expensive, one-of- a-kind heirloom with a history bring Dan Mahoney to Wagon Mound. The story that unfolds about the necklace made me think of “what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.”

Rollover is well-written and attention keeping with more than one breath-holding scene. It satisfied my craving for a good mystery story.

I invite you to enjoy it, too.

Claire Marshall’s construction company has a celebrity client. Tony Burke is a well-known racecar driver, perhaps better known for his romantic exploits. He wants to restore his family house in New Orleans’ Lower Garden District. When Claire talks him into opening his father’s old studio, they find evidence of an old murder. Within a day, there’s a second murder.

Tony insists the two crimes, although years apart, are connected. Unfortunately, the most obvious link puts him on top of the list of suspects. Claire wants the motive to lie elsewhere, and it might. The latest victim had no shortage of enemies.

Ordering this medicine online makes treatment easy, affordable and less levitra sale time consuming. These capsules are great for relieving stress buy cheap sildenafil as well and can be consumed by men of different ages. This particular http://appalachianmagazine.com/category/appalachian-eats/?filter_by=popular7 viagra sales uk component has the best effects in it. No, this is no levitra 5mg online spoon-feeding, but an essential exercise that every responsible parent would like to do with their children instead of pestering them. Claire is a widow just beginning to re-enter the world of dating. She’s been seeing a homicide detective, but as the investigation progresses, her sympathies lie more and more with the chief suspect. Thirty-four-years-old and she has finally met the man her mother warned her against.

In Secrets, Lies & Homicide, romance and mystery form a perfect match.

In mysteries, characterization is often neglected because of the suspense taking the limelight. Not in this novel, however. I was amazed and charmed by the vivid characters, all so unique and so wonderfully painted in just a few lines. A lot of the characterization was done through dialogue, with characters uttering a sentence that I would immediately recognize and say: ‘That was so Clair.’ Or ‘No one could say that but Mike.’ The author writes the dialogues masterfully, always progressing the plot or revealing something new about a character, but never bogging the story down by info dumps. Wonderful!

The romance was subtle and real, painful and passionate. All the best things wrapped up in the relationships of Claire and Mike and Tony. The hero, also doubling as a car racer and murder suspect, is not the classic, cliché hero. He is a man with faults, big ones; but Claire is a woman with a big heart that hasn’t felt love and passion for too long. He thaws her doubts and objections. She experiences heartbreak again, but also love and devotion. As a reader, you come not only to understand her, but to love her because she feels as real as your best friend.

The pacing of the novel was perfect, not only when it comes to the murder investigation, but also with the romantic relationship. It felt very natural and believable. It also added to the suspense of the main plotline. I liked how the motives for the crime lay in the past and how they were tied up with Tony’s childhood and his memories of his parents. The personalities of the side characters all added to the motives and the tragic events of the story. There were no coincidences or loose ends.

With Claire giving us a glimpse at the architecture of New Orleans, I wished for even more descriptions of the city and its culture.

I’m very happy I had the chance to read this book, and I will certainly buy the other two books of the trilogy.

Sometimes the needs of the state outweigh the needs of an individual. If only there were an easy way to tell when this is actually the case.

This story includes many detailed descriptions of the political and social climate of Russia. Some of the terms were written in Russian with the English translation following it in brackets. I rarely see this done in the mystery genre, but it made me want to learn more about this beautiful language. More than once I was grateful for all of the extra information because it referenced so many things that I hadn’t heard of before.

With that being said, there were a few times when the background information threatened to overwhelm the plot. A novella or full-length book could have easily set aside a few chapters to explain recent Russian history to the readers, but using that much space in a short story made the pacing feel uneven. It also made it more difficult for me to remember what was going on once the focus of the plot shifted back to Alexi.

The mystery itself was compelling. It’s difficult to discuss it in great detail with wandering into spoiler territory, but I liked how Ms. Consalvi wove everything together. She did a good job presenting thought-provoking clues to intelligent characters who take their work seriously and aren’t swayed by unimportant details. This is the kind of tale I’d pass along to friends who prefer the serious, intellectual side of this genre.

I’d recommend Assassination in London to anyone with a keen interest in Russian politics or history. There are many things to discover about those topics between these pages.

Sometimes wrong can feel oh so right . . .

Jenna Lacombe needs complete control, whether it’s in the streets . . . or between the sheets. So when she sets out on a solo road trip to visit her family in New Orleans, she’s beyond annoyed that the infuriatingly sexy Jack Oliver wants to hitch a ride with her. Ever since they shared a wild night together last year, he’s been trying to strip away her defenses one by one. He claims he’s just coming along to keep her safe-but what’s not safe for her is prolonged exposure to the tattooed hottie.

Jack can’t get Jenna out from under his skin. She makes him feel alive again after his old life nearly destroyed him-and losing her is not an option. Now Jack’s troubles are catching up to him, and he’s forced to return to his hometown in Louisiana. But when his secrets put them both in harm’s way, Jenna will have to figure out how far she’s willing to let love in . . . and how much she already has.

There’s no better feeling than coming across a great road trip story. I love those, and I loved Right Kind of Wrong for all the right reasons: great main characters, good story-telling, intense conflict, well-written plot.

There was chemistry between Jenna and Jack the first time we see them together. As we get to follow their story, the dynamics between them become only more intense and captivating. While Jack’s devotion to Jenna was bittersweet to watch as she kept refusing his advances, the real magic was happening inside Jenna. Her inner struggle between what she felt and what her mind wanted was very well-written.

Jack’s secrets and his past life could easily sound unnatural and forced because that ‘old’ Jack was so different to the man Jenna knows, but even that blast from the past fit into the story perfectly, adding to Jack’s character, not making him less real. Not to mention that the intense experience, the fear and excitement help Jenna see him in a new light – or rather see her own feelings for him in a new light. The intriguing subplot also adds suspense to the story and speeds up the pace of the second half of the novel.

There was little I didn’t like about this book. One of those things was – considering how hung up on her plan Jenna was – the smooth ending that didn’t feel realistic. Maybe more struggling with the relationship on her part would feel more in-character. But they deserved a happy ending, so that was what they got. Some secondary characters felt too flat, such as Pixie, Kayla, Daren. Others, like Jack’s brothers and Mom, were a delight to read. Some of the dialogue and scenes felt a little bit contrived, as if they were only there to give additional information about the story or characters.

But with Jenna and Jack in the forefront, any faults can be overlooked. Their vivid portrayal made me want them to be real. Jenna’s feistiness, and Jack’s patience and loyalty were a wonderful combination for their road trip. It was a journey I enjoyed from the beginning to the very end.

Colt Asbury’s life was good. He was captain of the football team in high school, popular with his classmates, and adored by his family. The only thing missing was someone special to share it with. But, between football and schoolwork he didn’t really have much time to think about romance—no that wasn’t exactly the whole truth. He had thought about it, and decided he wasn’t ready to deal with the ramifications of being gay. But, sometimes things can bubble to the surface in unexpected ways. In just a few minutes Colt’s whole world changes when he accidentally outs himself in front of his homeroom class over a new male student named Tangiers (Tangi) Reynolds. Suddenly he’s the talk of the school, yet all he can think about is Tangi. He’d never felt anything like what he felt when he’d first laid eyes on auburn-haired, green-eyed Tangi.

Still, it’s all too much for someone whose held so much in for so long and it takes its toll on Colt physically and emotionally. Confused and feeling broken down, he tries to find someone he can turn to, but discovers his best friend Mickey has turned against him. The rest of Colt’s friends aren’t even sure what to think about him anymore. His ex-football hero dad, whom he idolizes, and his ex-cheerleader mom are acting strangely too, and it turns out they’ve been hiding a closely guarded secret of their own. A secret shared by some of the parents of Colt’s friends. It will take the help of his younger brother Neil and Tangi’s sister Zen as well as allies in unexpected places to aid Colt in his time of greatest need. And then, there’s still the homecoming dance to think about, a homophobic chaperone to deal with, and a mystery man named Cameron. Will Colt be able to navigate these once calm now troubled waters of his life? More importantly will he be able to embrace a life with Tangi? All he knows is that he’ll give it his best shot for love of Tangi.

It’s a process that begins when one finally admits the truth to himself and ends when everyone knows. The question is, what other secrets will Colt uncover as he begins to come out to his family and friends?

At first Colt seemed a little too good to be true. He’s a popular jock who fearlessly stands up for other kids when they’re being bullied, an affectionate big brother to his much younger siblings, and a son who idolizes his parents. What I appreciated most about this character, though, was what happened when he revealed his true self. Colt is most definitely a nice guy, but I fully warmed up to him once I realized what was going through his mind as he did all of these kind things. The image people project is often quite different from what’s going on behind the scenes. Getting to know who Colt is when no one else around is ultimately what made me like him so much.

The dialogue in this book was inconsistent. One moment the characters would speak in full, grammatically correct sentences. A paragraph or two later the same individual would reply with a shortened version of a single word. Many people adjust their speaking patterns based on who is around them, of course, but it was jarring to switch so rapidly between slang and conversations that felt a little too stilted given the ages of the people involved in them. It was just as likely to occur with the teenagers as it was with adult characters.

The chemistry between Colt and Tangi is strong. The first taste of love is often the sweetest, and I found their reactions to their growing attraction to one another to be perfect for guys their age. It was fun to see how both of them responded to their first meeting. I can’t say much more about it without giving away spoilers, but it was quite the memorable experience.

I was surprised to see how reluctant the teachers were to address the bullying at Colt’s school given that this story is set in present day. It would have been understandable for them to ignore vague rumours or not notice the subtle stuff, but their refusal to even do something as obvious as break up a fight on school grounds didn’t feel realistic to me. I don’t doubt that some adults are willing to look the other way when a student is teased because of his sexual orientation, but I found it hard to believe that multiple teachers would be willing to ignore such blatant signs of harassment given how easy it would be for someone to record their behavior with a cellphone and get them and the school into serious trouble.

My favorite scenes involved Colt and and Tangi’s families. Both boys have warm, loving relationships with their parents and younger siblings. Neither family is perfect, of course, but I enjoyed seeing how they worked together. It was particularly interesting to see what happens when the families get together for dinner.

For Love of: Tangi made me think about all of the assumptions I’ve made about other people. This is a good choice for anyone who is willing to step into someone else’s shoes for a little while.

When his regular bodyguard is promoted, Josh Lang appears on the scene to take his place. Josh is self-assured, gorgeous, and openly gay. And he seems to know Hart’s secret. Josh is there to protect Hart, but can he save Hart from himself?

Hart seemingly has everything, wealth, power and a different sexy female in his bed every other night. But he has a deep, dark secret, one he’s desperate to keep covered up. More and more he’s struggling to get it up for the hot women whom he continually beds. It’s the steamy image of a guy sucking him off, or thrusting into a tight, male which is getting him to the finish line. He’s faking it as best he can so nobody guesses it’s no longer women who light his flame. When a sexy new bodyguard comes onto the scene, Hart realizes Josh might be everything and more that he needs.

This is a fun, short story about a man who seems to have it all only to discover he needs to be true to himself. While Hart might realize he’s gay, he’s been deluding himself for so long – and covering it up so convincingly – that this read to me more like a coming out novel than anything else. Readers looking for a romance mightn’t find themselves satisfied with this story. While I enjoyed reading about Hart finally coming to grips with his sexuality, I didn’t really feel a strong romantic connection between him and Josh. While there was clearly attraction – and later chemistry – between Hart and Josh, the story is written in the first person perspective by Hart, and so it’s difficult to really sense where Josh’s emotions lie for much of the story. This didn’t strike me as a romantic relationship, more a very masculine, sexual connection between two men who wanted each other. I was also a little disappointed in the ending, it felt somewhat rushed and there was still the question of Hart’s parents lingering in the back of my mind. This hurried ending could have been due to a word count, but I’d have felt much more satisfied if the author had rounded out the ending a bit better.

With only one M/M sex scene, readers who are curious about such erotic books but not into the heavier scenes might find this a good entrance into the genre. And while there were a few questions left behind and not the depth of connection I’d usually like between the two heroes I found myself enjoying Hart’s conundrum and blossoming self-awareness. A good book.

Summer in the Okanagan

I live in the Okanagan Valley, and summer up here is spectacular. The days are long and warm and the rivers are sparkling clear and just daring you not to come on in for a swim. We have numerous beaches – all of them free and three of them within walking distance of my house.

Anne Kane kayaking with Sassi (2)I live a block from the Shuswap River and love to drag the kayak down there in the early morning to go for a paddle. The dog comes with me – she loves to kayak as well. Sometimes, especially if it’s really hot out, she’ll walk to the very front tip of the kayak and jump in for a swim. She jumps from there because she knows I can’t reach her to stop her. She’s a smart little brat! When she’s had enough, she dog paddles over to the side of the cockpit and lets me pull her back into the kayak. Dripping wet. Into my lap. I don’t think I’ve ever managed to go for a paddle without getting at least slightly soggy.

One of my favorite places to paddle is a secluded little lake that is only accessible by kayak or canoe. You go through a marshy swamp, then paddle under a very old railway bridge. The bridge is low, narrow and the water under it is only a foot or so deep at the best of times. In late August, even the kayak is scraping bottom. Motor boats can’t manage it no matter what the water level. On the other side of the bridge is more marsh. You paddle through it for just a few minutes, and then the waterway opens up into a pristine lake that is just brimming with wildlife. I’ve seen deer, moose, otters, beaver and more types of birds than I can count. There’s bald eagles, at least three types of hawks, blue herons standing on their stilt-like legs and ducks. Lots of ducks. And geese. And even a few trumpeter swans, although they tend to prefer the river. I actually bought a waterproof camera (not cheap!) just so I could photograph all the amazing wildlife.

When I’m too lazy, (or it’s too hot to move) I hide in the gazebo my son built for me in my back yard. A nice cold drink, my laptop, the pets at my feet, and I’m a happy author. I can write to my heart’s content. Summer in the Okanagan is truly an amazing time of year!

Family Brimble - aug 2013 (2)This summer will be one of the best ever for me! My family and I have so much fun stuff planned…one of which is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

From July 23rd to August 6th, we will be spending a glorious two weeks on the Greek island of Rhodes. This will be my first visit to Greece and I cannot wait to discover its beauty and culture. My friends have told me to visit Old Town but refuse to say what it is about the town that has their eyes lighting up with excitement. I am looking forward to experiencing it myself.

Whenever I go on holiday, I always pack my notebook because I know that apart from using the destination in a future book, there will undoubtedly be plenty of characters, situations and sights to fuel ideas and maybe even a series of ideas. I live in hope 🙂

Of course, my suitcase will be packed with half a dozen paperbacks as well as my faithful Kindle. If holidays aren’t for catching up on some much-loved reading, what are they for?

As for the once in a lifetime opportunity? On August 17th, I am going to Ireland to have afternoon tea with Nora Roberts. Eekk! Unfortunately, it won’t be just the two of us but a room full of dedicated readers and fans. The afternoon takes place in the stunning Ashford Castle and my wonderful husband has booked us a room there for the night too. I can barely believe this will be happening––Nora Roberts is my biggest inspiration as a writer and my favorite author as a reader. I am beside myself with excitement!

So happy summer, lovely people – I hope you enjoy yours as much as I will mine!

Thirteen-year-old sleuth Skylar Robbins plans to become a private detective like her grandfather. Stuck at her bullying cousin Gwendolyn’s Malibu estate for the summer, Skylar brings her detective kit, portable spy tools, and her journal for taking notes in secret code. She had no idea how dangerous the next eight weeks would prove to be. On the first day of summer school an odd classmate named Kat passes a note in backward writing, introducing Skylar to the secret world of witchcraft. Practical Skylar didn’t believe in magic—until the spells they perform in an abandoned garden actually begin to work. Skylar finds herself accepting the increasingly risky challenges made by her new BF, and when Kat tells her that a mysterious group is doing wicked things up in Shadow Hills at night, she can’t help but investigate. Her classmates are nervous and rumors are flying. The teen sleuth uses the tools in her detective kit and faces her most embarrassing fear to find the truth. If Skylar survives the summer, her life will be changed forever.

There are some things that puzzle even the smartest detective. Will Skylar be able to figure out why her cousin is such a bully or what’s really happening late at night on Shadow Hill before the summer ends?

Skylar’s insatiable curiosity made me like her immediately. She’s an intelligent and resourceful girl who is clearly accustomed to thinking on her feet. What really endeared me to this character, though, were her faults. They’re things that a lot of us struggle with, and they show up so early on in her summer vacation that they feel like natural extensions of her personality. The fact that she’s willing to do this makes me think she’s a great role model. It takes a lot of courage to own up to this stuff, after all.

There were times when I questioned Skylar’s choice of friends. She’s a kind person, but she seems to be attracted to people who don’t necessarily share that character trait. It would have been helpful to know why she befriends people who have such a different outlook on life given that Skylar doesn’t seem to have a mean bone in her body. I’m hoping that this part of her life will be more fully explored in the sequel.

As a lifelong fan of codes, I was pleased to see so many different types of them represented in this story. There’s something fascinating about writing a message that most other people won’t be able to understand. At a few different points I actually paused and played around with the various codes that Skylar and her friends used to keep their communication with each other hidden. To me this is a sign of a great young adult mystery!

Figuring out the best age recommendation for this book was tricky. The plot is clearly intended for middle grade readers. Skylar seemed to written to appeal to an audience that is a few years younger than her. Chronologically she’s a teenager, but hasn’t yet developed an interest in the kind of stuff that typically appeal to adolescents.

Skylar Robbins: The Mystery of Shadow Hills was a strong introduction to a fun, new series. I’m looking forward to catching up with Skylar on her next adventure, and I’d heartily recommend doing the same to anyone who is a fan of mysteries or young adult novels.
