The Sanatarium offers no cure for murder…

At the dawn of the 20th century, Healing Sands Sanitarium, southwest of Seattle, Washington, sits on the sandy doorstep of the Pacific Ocean. Famed for its restorative rest cures, fermented diets, and Dr. Hornsby’s electrotherapeutics, no one has ever died at Healing Sands. Until now.

When Professor Bradshaw is summoned to investigate, he knows this was no accident, but his only clue to foul play is as insubstantial as smoke—to anyone other than an electrical engineer. Suspects in this isolated location are limited to a handful whose lives—and lies—must be exhumed and examined.

A sinister tale emerges as deep undercurrents turn personal, provoking Bradshaw to make a decision about the woman he loves. And then an everyday object provides the key, alerting Bradshaw that one among them is a walking dead man, and another possesses the capacity for murder.

This is the first book of this series I’ve read, but it definitely will not be my last. Even though it’s not the first book of the series, there are enough clues to the back story that I didn’t have any trouble following the characters and what was going on in their lives. However, the clues did intrigue me enough to want to know the full story! So… I’ll will be getting the first two books in the series very shortly.

The series is set at the turn of the century and features Benjamin Bradshaw, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington. I have to admit to being a little in love with Professor Bradshaw by the end of this book–even if he doesn’t have a clue when it comes to the women in his life.

The cast of characters is a neat blend– and the mystery to be solved kept me guessing. It reminds me in tone a little of the Murdoch mystery series by Maureen Jennings—they are both set around the same time and both use techniques that are fairly common now, but were new at the time.

If you are a fan of mysteries or historical (i.e., turn of the century) works— give this one a try.

Chase Williams is a gorgeous but painfully shy web designer whose long-term boyfriend dumped him for being such a “nice” guy. Instead of meeting his buddies at the local bar for a drink, he helps his elderly neighbor with a DIY project. When a wobbly step ladder leads to a banged up wrist and a trip to the ER, Chase is convinced it’s the worst night ever. Then he meets his handsome nurse.

Matt Owens is the boy next door who loves working in the busy ER. He’s more than ready to clock out from his double shift until he meets his patient in Bed 4.

But will Matt’s attraction to Chase be enough to make him break his rule about never dating patients?

After falling from a step ladder while helping his elderly neighbor, Chase Williams bangs up his wrist and ends up in the ER for treatment.  Following hours of waiting, he’s finally led through and a nurse takes his vitals. Moments later, trying to ignore the pain in his sprained wrist, Chase hears her teasing another nurse – Matt – about how hot Chase is and how they’d be perfect together. Despite a bad break up, Chase can’t help his attraction to Matt and soon the chemistry is sizzling between them.

I really enjoyed this story. Chase is a sweet guy, a little nerdy but with a shy heart of gold shining through. Matt has a dry, snarky sense of humour and the instant attraction between them sizzles on the page. Despite this attraction I was a little surprised Matt turned down Chase’s initial advances. It was clear to me they were both really interested in each other, but after his own messy break up and being outed at work, Matt has a rule against dating people he meets at his job in the hospital.

I found this to be one of those rare books where the characters don’t do precisely what you expect them to. Small jokes, sizzling chemistry and little surprises kept me turning the pages, laughing and wondering what would happen next. The only thing that slowed the pace for me was more than half the book is the lead up to Matt and Chase getting together. For a short story I usually like the pace faster, so the resolution (not just the sex, but the mechanisms of the relationship and seeing the two main characters be together as a couple) doesn’t feel like a footnote at the end. It’s a delicate balance between a book feeling rushed and moving too slowly and this one felt a bit too much of the latter for me. I ended up skimming some of their interactions to cut the chase – so to speak – and that was a little sad, since the storyline, characters and their interactions are worthy of relishing and really enjoying each moment.

With amazing, complex and intricate characters, I found this story to be brimming with heart, laughter and excellent writing. I was invested almost immediately with both Chase and Matt, and really rooting for them to get together. The sex was deliciously spicy and incredibly erotic, well worth the wait. Not too campy, but still strongly emotional, I believe this is an excellent entrance into the world of M/M and a good book to recommend those who aren’t sure of this growing genre or like their romance spicy but not pushing the envelope. An emotional, character driven story that I greatly enjoyed. Recommended.

It was nice to read a paranormal love story where they didn’t immediately jump into bed right away. The third book in the Bears series, we were introduced to Sammy, Slater and Brock before, but this is the first time we really understand what Sammy has gone through. They had her the ups and downs and made plenty of mistakes together. Parts of the story were a little bit over the top but overall I think it’s an enjoyable paranormal love story.

Sammy was a very damaged character at the beginning but she definitely fights her way back to her old self. Some of the way she reacts to situations may be triggers to anyone who’s been abused. Slater and Brock work really hard to help her heal without walking on eggshells around her. It’s obvious they really care even if they both make dumb mistakes.

Overall, it’s a good story, it had romance, suspense and the right amount of sexy to push it into an enjoyable erotic paranormal romance.

Heart of Fame, Book 4

Back when he was playing drums for rock star Nick Blackthorne, it was easy for Noah Holden to focus on the sticks in his hand. Now that the band is getting back together, he’s excited—and worried. His ADHD has made every minute of his post-Blackthorne life a chaotic mess.

His apprehension is blown away when a bar waitress makes him a proposition—and not the kind this king of drums is used to.

When Peppa Kerrigan overhears the band talking reunion, she pushes her self-doubt aside, calls on her encyclopedic music knowledge and challenges Noah Holden to a trivia contest. Her prize should she win? An audition. His? A kiss. Their smoking sexual chemistry guarantees victory—for them both.

With Peppa, Noah is finally able to control his stormy creative energy. But when his wild past catches up with him, he faces the fight of his life to keep from losing his smoky-voiced angel. The one woman who keeps his mind—and his heart—staying on rhythm.

Steady Beat is the next of Lexxie Couper’s Heart of Fame series, and looks at the drummer for Nick Blackthorne’s old band.

Noah Holden, Samuel Gibson, Levi Levistan and Jaxon Campbell; collectively they were Blackthorne, the band behind singer Nick Blackthorne. Since Nick’s retirement, each has gone their separate ways, but now, they are considering reuniting to do a song for a film starring mega star Chris Huntley. But there are some concerns to iron out, like what they will call themselves; without Nick, the name Blackthorne makes no sense. And just who will take Nick’s place as lead vocalist?

Noah has been at loose ends, after his supermodel girlfriend left him for their dog walker, because she couldn’t deal with Noah’s ADHD mania. When waitress Peppa Kerrigan catches his eye, she proposes a challenge to Noah; a music trivia contest. If Noah wins, he gets a kiss from Peppa, and if she wins, she gets an audition for the lead spot. With Peppa, Noah once again finds his muse, and his inner peace, and when she wins the challenge, Noah agrees to convince his mates to give her a shot. The others agree to listen, and Peppa is determined to live her dream, in spite of crippling stage fright. But Peppa finds she is more suited to managing than singing, and comes up with a marketing plan for the band, as well as a new name. As Noah and Peppa grow closer, Noah is finally grounded, and begins to write songs again, until his old girlfriend Heather reappears with shocking news that rocks Noah’s world. Can the budding relationship between Peppa and Noah survive the news? Can Noah continue to write without his muse by his side? Will Peppa’s audition be a success?

I like the world Ms. Couper has built, and the inside workings of her band of musicians is an interesting one. The characters are all well detailed and very real, with faults and flaws as well as talent in their particular forte. I enjoyed watching as Noah and the band made their decisions together about the future of the group, not letting one voice overrule.

Noah Holden is hot, talented and more than a bit distracted by his ADHD. His one steadying influence is music, and when Nick retired, Noah was left at loose ends. Easily distracted, his writing suffers and he has no focus, until he meets waitress and aspiring singer, Peppa. After her trivia challenge to Noah, and in spite of what his mates say, he is determined to give her the audition she ‘won’. I liked watching as Noah was finally able to focus his energies and find the calm inside to bring back his music.

Peppa Kerrigan has dreams of being a singer, but suffers from crippling stage nerves. I like her determination and her strength, and her willingness to reach for her dreams. I respected her decision that, although she had the talent for her dream, she was better suited to a life behind the scenes, and was trying to succeed without relying on family influence. I enjoyed seeing her come to life as the de facto band manager, and enjoyed the growing romance with Noah.

There are some intriguing insights into band life in this, and of course, it wouldn’t be Lexxie Couper without some scorching romance heating up the story. I liked the way the problem of Noah’s ex was handled, with some class and dignity, and no mudslinging or dirty tricks. The acceptance from Peppa for Noah, with all of his idiosyncrasies was the high point for me, and I was delighted with their happy ever after, although it was in question for a short while. I love this world, and can’t wait for more about this talented and hot group of musicians.

Revved and Ready for passion, heat sizzles between two friends…

For Hayley Fitzgibbon, the heat wave blanketing her small town is nothing compared to the inferno inside her whenever she looks at her best friend, Rory. On the night of his parents’ anniversary party, she no longer resists her burning desire and makes it known how much she wants him. Secluded under a willow tree, down a lover’s lane, she’s revved and ready to claim her man on the top of his ’69 Mustang.

Hayley Fitzgibbon’s longtime best friend, Rory, has owned a classic ’69 Mustang since his twenty first birthday. They both love the car dearly, how it handles, the sleek sexiness of the body, and especially how it still hums like it was brand new. After both attending Rory’s parents’ 50th wedding anniversary neither is quite ready to go home, so they drive the “scenic” route and end up at a popular make out place. The ’69 mustang works their magic, and soon they’re both to determined to move past their friendship and start something wonderful together.

This is one of those glorious short stories about the magic that can happen when two long-time friends move past that barrier and become a romantic partnership without equal. I also like how the author showed us how it wasn’t out of the blue. Covert glances, heated stares, lingering touches, this book had all the ear-marks of a wonderful story that showed, not just told. I was a little surprised (and titillated to be honest) how when Hayley and Rory shed their inhibitions they really went all out. There’s quite a bit of public displays – those who aren’t turned on by exhibitionism might want to give this one a miss – but I found it sexy and very well written. My only disappointment was that their absolute lack of regard for where they were (and the potential consequences should they be seen/caught) had me question their sanity more than I’d have liked. My own reality check distracted me somewhat from the heat of the fantasy. I’m not sure why I wasn’t into the scene enough to not care about what might occur, but I found it somewhat unrealistic that neither of them were at all worried about being seen, about someone else coming along or about potential ramifications of their actions.

Having said all that, I found this is a smoking hot book with caring, wonderful characters and a lot of pent up, repressed sexuality finally being set free. I greatly enjoyed seeing Hayley and Rory consummate their long standing desire. I especially enjoyed how even after the introduction the author kept the titled car in on the action. It wasn’t merely a plot device to snare the reader, but was a proper part throughout the entire story. I thought this was a lovely story – deliciously sexy and really satisfying when Hayley and Rory finally realized how much better “more than friends” could be. Recommended.

This is definitely a book that you can not judge by its cover. Looking at the cover you may assume this is a typical romance novel, but don’t let the cover fool you. I have to admit I was quit surprised at the contents and plot. The author has created a story that has a balanced mixture of romance, suspense and paranormal. The even flow of the plot kept drawing me in to continue reading more. Medium Rare is book two in the Medium trilogy.

Rose Ramos has not only inherited a lovely Victorian home, she is also introduced to the family spirit guide, Skag and she also inherited the family talent to see and communicate with the other side. Being a medium with such a willing partner, Rose and Skag start Locators, Ltd.

As with a medium rare dish, many factors come in to play to make the meal satisfying and Meg Benjamin did just that.

Starting with a hint of romance and suspense, Rose submits her resume to Evan Delwin, who is looking for a research assistant. Evan has written books on exposing psychic fraud and his interest is peaked after he receives a call highlighting a mysterious psychic by the name of William Bradford. The medium that made the call seems to have conveniently disappeared. As Rose and Evan spend more time together interviewing and investigating William Bradford they seem to have found a fondness for each other. Rose starts to notice that Evan is hot; Evan feels the need to call Rose or stop by to discuss the case, however Rose has been hiding the fact that she is a medium. Will Rose reveal her secret before it is too late? What caused Evan to have such doubt in the powers of mediums and psychics?

Now mix in a bit of terror. The author does a fantastic job of building the scary scenes starting with Rose being chased by hellbound dogs and then shortly there after ravens attach her home, later to encounter demons lurking to collect more souls.

Meg Benjamin really shows her talent for being descriptive, with keeping the plot flowing and building a successful plot with a lot going on but still not too much where it will lose you. The novel kept its interest all the way through. When I first looked at the cover I would have never thought this novel would be packed with such a powerful punch.

I am not one to eat my meat medium rare but I have to say this was a satisfying read.

However, her husband, Master Pyromancer Douglas Brightglade is also in this strange land on a mission of his own, and he is keeping an eye on Myrn from a distance, not that she needs it.

This is the fourth novel in the ‘Mancer series, but it works fine as a standalone novel as all the background information that a new reader would need is given clearly and immediately at the beginning. The plot is filled with many twists and turns as Myrn and Douglas each work on separate parts of a much larger problem. The action is fast-paced and the novel is a real page turner. But what I liked best about it is the depth of the author’s imagination in creating a multitude of fantastic and interesting characters in a world filled with wonder. I really felt as if I were in Samarca and the descriptions of the places within the novel are so richly drawn that the world feels completely real.

Likewise, the characters are unique and distinct. Myrn takes the lead in the adventures, demonstrating her enormous capabilities. She allows herself to be kidnapped and offered on the auction block at a slave market and then succeeds in engineering the sale so that it helps her with her mission. She does all this with a lot of skill as well as a healthy helping of humor, which makes for a delightful combination.

I highly recommend Aeromancer, and indeed this entire series, to fantasy lovers of all ages. It is a thrilling adventure with a great deal of imagination and humor.

The story: A girl whose heart has broken into a thousand pieces meets an angel. During their travels in the night, the angel enlists the help of spirits of the East, North, West, and South on his quest to mend her heart.

In addition to Angel Heart, (story by Cornelia Funke, music by Luna Pearl Woolf, narrated by Jeremy Irons); the work combines well known songs from The Beatles, classical music and folk music. The visual storytelling design is by Mirada, a multi-platform company that was founded by Mathew Cullen and Pan s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro.

This is a charming audio book suitable for all ages… but it’s even more. In alternating tracks, Jeremy Irons shares the story of an angel and a girl whose heart is broken into thousand pieces. Between each segment of the story is a track of beautiful music to go along with the storyline.

I love the way each track is clearly defined as it allows this gem to be played in multiple ways. You can just hear the story, just the music, or you can listen to the entire piece. I admit, the first time I listened to it, I skipped the musical interludes because I wanted to know what happened in the storyline. With subsequent listenings, however, I’ve let the CD play on through and have thoroughly enjoyed the blending of the two art forms.

The story is beautifully told (and equally beautifully read by the talented Jeremy Irons—he can read the telephone book to me any time!!). Ms. Funke’s other works are a lot of fun to read–this one is hauntingly evocative of tenderness and pain-healed. It’s a story I have listened to more than once (and as I’m not normally a re-reader, that’s saying something).

Kudos to everyone involved. 5 stars.  Thanks to the producers for trying something new!

The Night Seekers have to come to arms to eradicate the menace. Logan Tanner is an established member of the team and also a shifter, Rebecca Black, human, is new to the unit. Both are determined on their mission.

Ms Holt does a great job of setting up a scary initial situation with vivid descriptions of the beast’s victims and then also showing the immediate electricity and attraction between Logan and Rebecca.

While tracking and trailing the beast things get hot between the hero and heroine. The sex scenes are well-written, engaging and I wouldn’t mind a bit of Logan myself! The relationship and depths of their feelings grow very quickly but in this imaginative world created by Ms Holt is still seems believable.

At times I would have liked the mission side of the story to move quicker and with less detail, I was keen to get to the naked and sweaty action – but maybe then that’s just my dirty mind! There are lots of secondary characters in the plot, and I believe if I’d read the entire series they would have had more impact on me as I read this one. The story is narrated not just from Logan and Rebecca’s viewpoints but also some of these secondary characters from time to time including the Chupacabra.

I had never heard of El Chupacabra (Spanish for goat sucker apparently) and after reading Branded for Lust I really don’t want to meet one! Scary stuff, so consider that when picking up this book, there’s some toe-curling, bloody scenes with a monster that could give you nightmares. Ceila, the “house mother” is a strange, mysterious woman prone to sudden changes of heart, yet Jim finds himself unaccountably attracted to her.

This is a slightly strange book, unlike most anything else I’ve read. Told in the first person in some ways it’s difficult to understand what’s going on, as we can only see things from Jim’s perspective and experience. Also, while much is alluded to throughout the story, I didn’t feel as if some things were very clearly explained, things like why – exactly – Jim found himself at this hostel, what he was running from and whether he was complicit in much of the drug trafficking and such. In some ways this felt to me like one of those “confessions of” stories, and while I did enjoy it, I spent most of the time mystified as to where the story was going, what was fully happening with the plot, and what the thrust of the plot really was. Despite this I wanted to understand, the author’s writing was quick, precise and interesting and so I continued to read in the hopes of illumination. While even upon completion I still didn’t get most of it, I didn’t feel as if I had wasted my time either, reading something completely alternative and refreshingly different.

There’s no traditional romance or erotica in this short story, the sex is held pretty much behind closed doors (there’s no graphic content to it, merely a build up to it and then declaration of the act having been performed) and while it’s clear the main relationship is between Jim and Celia, I didn’t personally find any romance between them. For an erotic short story this surprised me, but seemed to resonate with the first person, slightly disjointed, mysterious tone and presentation of the whole tale. I feel that readers who are looking for something completely outside the box and different might truly enjoy this, but readers wanting just a quick, sexy read mightn’t find what they’re looking for here.

A really different read, but still enjoyable.
