Seventeen-year-old Emma and her twin brother Charlie think they’re in for a boring summer vacation. That is, until Emma notices something unusual in the lighthouse lobby. Unraveling this mystery proves to be just the beginning of an adventure that will take Emma, Charlie, and their unlikely new friends to distant planets, throughout the multiverse, and to a place where everything is possible … and will ultimately lead Emma to discover the unfathomable powers that reside within her own mind.

Sometimes extraordinary things lay hidden in the most ordinary places.

This novel had great dialogue. Unfortunately most of my favorite quotes from it contain too many spoilers to share in this review due to the points in the plot when they occur. I was especially entertained by how Ms. Stucky reworked common expressions into places or ideas that made me grin, though, and I never grew tired of seeing what she might come up with next.

It’s rare for stories written for this age group to include subplots about characters being in relationships or having crushes on one another. While there was nothing inappropriate about that storyline, I was surprised when it showed up because everything else in the plot seemed to be specifically written for middle grade readers. The romance could have easily been cut out. If it had, I would have been comfortable choosing a higher rating.

What would it be like to visit other planets? As someone who has often wondered about this, I was intrigued by all of the places that these characters see. Earth is unique in many different ways. It was nice to see this subtly acknowledged before the author went on to show the amazing range of possibilities.I would have liked to visit (almost) all of them.

The pacing of this book was sometimes uneven. Very exciting things would happen, but then the plot would slow down to add exposition or share a joke. While I was amused by these things, I also wished that I could know what happened to the characters more quickly. Often these pauses took place at exactly the same time when I was most interested in seeing how everyone would get out of their latest scrape. It was a little disconcerting.

A good antagonist makes a big difference. It took a while for the villain in this tale to show up, but I enjoyed the suspense of it all along the way. There were a few hints about Emma and Charlie were up against along the way. The big reveal was still fun, though, and it made me curious to see what might happen in the sequel.

I’d recommend The Universes Inside the Lighthouse to anyone who is a fan of zany science fiction.

Glenda Nagel has ordered her life just the way she wants it. She enjoys her job as editor for Getty Museum’s monthly magazine, and she has a home far away from the Los Angeles congestion and smog, as she lives in the Juniper Hills with her three cats. But then a new Director of Egyptian Antiquities is hired, and while Glenda admits that he is very handsome, she finds something strange about him. She doesn’t trust him.

I liked Glenda from the very beginning. She is smart and capable, and she’s worked hard to get to her current position. All of a sudden everything is threatened when she discovers an ivory and emerald statuette of the cat goddess Bastet. She only discovers it because Pandora, her Persian cat, takes an instant dislike to the vase it was hidden in.

It can be hard to write a convincing mystery when the reader knows from the beginning who the villain is and what he’s up to, but C. L. Kraemer manages just that. Much of the story is told from Glenda’s point of view, but we also get to know Dr. Dabir Omar Ben Rashid Yacoub Riyadh, and he is definitely a villain that I really disliked. His character is well-fleshed out and he has very few redeeming characteristics. But then we also get the viewpoint of another level of villains and the suspense builds as the reader follows Glenda’s actions. There are curses and a long history of intrigue and injustice.

The descriptions of not only the scene, but the history of Egyptian archaeology is fascinating and brings a real richness to the story. I learned things while I held my breath as Glenda faced one situation after another. The pacing is excellent and the author really keeps her readers on the edge of their chairs.

Mystery lovers are sure to enjoy this glimpse into the world of archaeology as they watch Glenda trying to stay ahead of Dr. Riyadh.

Can these three finally overcome the hurt of their past or will they succumb to it?

Will Emma finally get what she always wanted by claiming her temporary men?

Grace Ryles continues her Grand Oak Springs series with Claiming Her Temporary Men. This book is a scorching hot menage story. I greatly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

As far as the plot goes it was a strong one. It had a great set-up. Chase and Ryder are two brothers who want to settle down with one woman to share. But they’ve been hurt before and aren’t looking to repeat past mistakes. Then into their lives comes sweet submissive Emma and she is exactly the kind of woman they need. They propose a month long fling of sexy times between the three of them. They have an instant attraction so Emma agrees to a no strings fling with the two sexy ranchers. Needless to say that it’s only a game for a little while before deeper feelings are involved for all three lovers. Too bad for them, but good for the reader, there is quite a bit of personal conflict there. A brooding Ryder held onto his reservations about the relationship, while Emma struggled with it on a different level. On the other hand, Chase was more than ready which caused some problems with Ryder. However, the most intense conflict came from the bit of suspense that Ryles threw in for good measure. There you have it ….. Emma is in danger and that’s where things got really interesting.

I will say that the characters had great chemistry. The pages were full of sexy loving that rivalled any I’ve been reading lately. I appreciated that since it’s usually what I’m looking for when picking up a menage story. This one featured some bold BDSM elements. There are plenty of M/F/M scenes, and other treats like anal, spanking and flogging. Still, the bones of the story was the romance part as the relationship turned from instant lust to lasting love.

Another important thing was the strong plot. It was well written, in fact, everything was perfect to me. That includes the lenth of the book, it’s substantial enough, with characters that are fleshed out to let the reader get involved with them and the story. It was fast paced with an easy flow. Lastly, It was an emotional story. I loved these three but they had some serious baggage, and that made the story a more compelling read.

To put it simply, this was a great read for me. I enjoyed it and can’t wait for the next one in the series.

12_3 MISSING BookCover_TheMissingPlanetsPlanet Terato has become a member of the assembly of the Confederated League of Allied Star Systems. The Murian Outpost Terato once commanded by His Imperial Majesty’s Lord High Chamberlain Herklo Korvo XXXIV is now Teratoan staffed and under the command of Teratoan Eklam a’Qoc.

From the uncharted reaches between galaxies, attacks of extraordinary weaponry come against Terato and the Myr worlds of the Murians. Terminus Terato’s expanded link-portals and converter power modules are virtually useless. Power loss, defenses, communications and travel are totally disrupted. High Chamberlain Korvo’s unexpected return to Terminus on a mission for His Imperial Majesty leaves him stranded on Terato. Attacks grow more massive, more unpredictable; spread across the worlds of the League, as an isolated Terminus struggles among the shattered rubble and whispering remains of an ancient Polity of star-walkers.

Family and friends are lost, empires and civilizations in disarray, Terminus and Planet Terato almost defenseless. Desperate for answers, their worlds being overwhelmed by this remorseless aggressor, Eklam and Korvo reach across unexplored space in a despairing gamble and the last reserves of converter star-substrate, seeking one insignificant star system of gas giants and rocky inner planets for possible relics of the elusive Lantaraan Polity.

Enjoy an excerpt:

The portal hummed with a pulsating drone; grew louder. Korvo recognized the cascade effects of a portal overload. “Converter intermix-portal lock!” he yelled. Shoved Martin hard, “Get away!”

Magnetic loops of plasma streamed out; superheated beyond a Sol corona; mixed with hydrogen substrate; sucked into the white-hot rim of the portal frame. Converter commands useless. Arnov and Drov jumped away from their smoking consoles. A belch of uncontained hydrogen-plasma sublimated a cloud through the camp. Vidscreens sizzled; acrid smoke drifted up to curl toward the inanimate beast consuming the portal. Cermet footings fused; a console imploded. Arnov, tossed against one of the supports; green blood oozed along his shoulder. Drok’s head bumped against cermet supports. The pounding drone of the portal growled like a wounded Murian swamp dragon. Bundles of raw stellar core screamed through Jupiterr’s turgid atmospheres, tearing at the planet. Colossus Jupiterr magnus rolled with disruptions. Agitated plasma entangled with antimatter; churned methane storms into frenzies, giant arcs exploding through the clouds; snaked around their camp. The white-hot remains of the portal a bubbling melted puddle.

Ek shielded his eyes from the scorching brightness; helped Arnov up. Through the shredded side of the shelter, glimpsed Korvo scramble from under a scorched field stand, its collapsed bracing ripped away. Martin pushed himself up. The air inside their camp ionized; darken to oranges and yellows and purple-blue charged photon auras. Converters still pumping, sucking substrate, at the same time sagging in seared taffy-puddles, their shell alloys disassociating in sputtering kaleidoscope rainbows and blistering caustic nose-stinging swirls.

Andrea’s latest assignment leads her to kill a human. But everything is not as it seems when she gets caught and her handler is killed. She must find out who set her up with the assignment. In the process, saving herself and opening up to the man who could be hers.

The first thing that caught my eye about this book was the title, Shift Happens. I wanted to know what it meant to the characters and how it interwove within the book. The phrase was embedded in the story. By the end, the title is understandable and perfect.

Andrea’s past is important and a vital point not only in the story but also for Andrea and Wick’s relationship. In Shift Happens the author reveals her story right before the climax (ending). It wasn’t a total information dump since bits and pieces of her past is shared throughout the whole story but it is somewhat of a ‘big reveal’. It worked well and kept this reader interested throughout the novel.

The characters in the story are well developed. Really, the story as a whole is very good. There’s romance but it doesn’t overpower the story like in some books. I would read the second in this series just to know what happens.

Readers interested in Urban Fantasy where the plot is more than overwhelming romance will like this one. Though, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves urban fantasy/paranormal and romance.

A royal kiss under the mistletoe

Prince Alexandro Castanovo arrives in snowy New York intent on protecting his royal family from scandal. And when Reese Harding—down-to-earth and heart-stoppingly beautiful—finds room for him at her inn, it seems like the perfect twist of fate.

It keeps on working generika levitra 20mg unica-web.com to give a memorable and passionate performance to the patients. All these cialis online order herbs in right combination offer the best herbal cure for weak erection. Not long ago Reese’s world came crumbling down, shaking her foundations. But this enigmatic stranger intrigues her! She’s learned to be wary of secrets…but when she discovers Alex’s true identity, might there be enough magic in the air to make this regular American girl a princess by Christmas…?

This story is a modern day fairy tale romance with a holiday backdrop which makes the romance that much sweeter.

Reese is a strong young woman who has survived some pretty big emotional wallops in her life. She doesn’t trust men, with good reason. As the story opens, Reese is struggling to keep the old mansion she has set up as a B&B afloat after her father left Reese and her mother in deep debt. Reese has had to give up her dreams in order to keep her business running and take care of her emotionally fragile mother.

When a handsome man with a sexy accept shows up at the house claiming he has a reservation, it’s immediately apparent there has been some kind of mistake. Arrangements are made for this mysterious, and rather persistent man despite having no available rooms for him.

Alex is a prince who has traveled to America in hopes of drawing attention from the media away from this brother and his latest scandal which could put his country’s regime in peril. He never dreamed he would meet the woman who would cause him to question his staunch adherence to duty and obligation.

The story was just a bit uneven at the beginning and was oddly disjointed which disrupted the flow. It was just little slow moving at first and the set up took up a little too much time. But, once the story reached the half way mark all those little kinks had been smoothed out and I found myself really involved in the plot.

Alex was so nice and sweet and so open with his feelings but, he was also bogged down by the rules of his family and country and their expectations. I thought it was kind of ironic that his wayward brother would teach Alex a thing or two about love and life. Reese would have to work hard to open herself up like Alex. Her guard was up at all times, but Alex was simply too irresistible…the ultimate prince charming. Who doesn’t love this fairytale like story where the poor girl who has given up her dreams to face life’s harsh realities winds up becoming a princess when she meets the love of her life? This is sigh worthy every.single.time. The poignancy of the holiday season was very difficult for Reese, so it was only fitting that she would find true love and all her hopes and wishes would come true at Christmas. This is a very sweet holiday themed romance and I really enjoyed reading it.

Inheriting the bulk of Ms. Addie Bynum’s wealth is a godsend, but moving to the small town of Legend, Tennessee, to get that money is a big pain. Ms. Addie has given Jeremy a second chance under certain conditions. Will he take that chance?

Marty Fields is a pet psychic. She’s spent a lifetime explaining animal communication to skeptic citizens of her small town. Only Ms. Addie understands her gift. Keeping Ms. Addie’s six cats after the old lady’s death is the least Marty can do. Yet, she’s put her life on hold. Will the grandnephew’s arrival upset the rhythm of her comfortable existence?

Have you ever wondered what your pet is thinking?

Jeremy is definitely not an animal lover, and now his financial future and the fate of his business is in the paws of six cats. Jeremy’s frustration is completely understandable. He isn’t heartless in regards to his late aunt. He is just trying to save his company and the employees who depend on him. Marty doesn’t like the situation any more than Jeremy. She is just trying to honor the wishes of Ms. Addie, the only person who cared for Marty and accepted her unusual gift. Marty gently tries to give Jeremy helpful hints in dealing with the cats, but I don’t think Jeremy is trying very hard. Will Jeremy, Marty, and the cats find a way to coexist, or will the cats run Jeremy out of the house before the month is over?

Jeremy and Marty’s situation certainly is unique. However, I don’t think they were as rounded as they could have been. Jeremy is the typical uptight businessman trying to prove he can be a success, but ends up missing out on life in the process. Marty is the quirky young woman shunned by her small town looking for love and acceptance. Also, Jeremy and Marty always seem to be uncomfortable around each other. I expected them to be nervous at first, but hoped things would change as the story progressed. However, they didn’t spend very much time together and their interactions never really smoothed out. Whenever they spent any length of time around each other, it was always awkward. Consequently, their connection never clicked for me and their romance didn’t feel natural.

The cats were the real stars of Heart to Heart. The cats all had distinct personalities and their antics were hilarious. I’ve always had fun imagining what my pets are saying, so reading Ms. Scarbrough’s interpretation of how animals communicate was very entertaining and brought a smile to my face.

Overall, I liked Heart to Heart. It is a light and fun romance sure to delight animal lovers. Looking for a pleasant book to read in one sitting? I recommend giving Heart to Heart a try.

The problem with being whisked away to a new life is that the troubles of the old one almost always travel with you.

There’s something to be said for reworking an old, traditional story for a new generation. I’d never heard of the legend that this one was loosely based on, so I didn’t have any preconceptions about what should happen next. The rewrite worked well, though, and it made me pretty curious to compare it to the original. To me this is a sign of a successful retelling.

I had a lot of trouble understanding the relationship between Talia and Vina. So much of it involved conflict and codependency that it dampened the chemistry I was expecting to find between them. Both characters were really interesting as individuals, but they didn’t work so together at all as a couple. It was hard to see why they were attracted to one another. Including more information about how they met and what they like about each other would have helped me understand why they’re a good match.

It took a while to fill in the gaps about when and where everything took place. During the first several chapters I wondered if it had a contemporary setting based on what certain characters said, but after a while I figured out that it does seem to take place in the past. What surprised me about this is that it actually works well with the overall dreamlike quality of the plot. Different sections were just as ambiguous about other topics, so leaving it up to the reader to discover these things was a smart move.

Taliasman is a good choice for fairy tale enthusiasts.

Author Interview and Giveaway: Rachel Brimble

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Rachel Brimble, whose latest book Christmas at the Cove has recently been released. Leave a comment or ask Rachel a question to receive your choice of signed paperback of books two, three or four from her Templeton Cove series – all the books can be read as stand alone.

Rachel told me that Nora Roberts (pictured with Rachel in the image below) has been a huge influence on her contemporary work, along with Jill Shalvis and Robyn Carr.

“I just love her style, plotlines, work ethic and fabulous characterization. It has always been a dream of my to write a continuing series set in the same small town,” she explained. “I am just about ready to send book 5 in my Harlequin Superromance Templeton Cove series to my editor, so I really am living my dream right now.”

She’s currently plotting her next Victorian romance with eKensington/Lyrical and is very excited.

“It will be my fourth book in a series of loosely connected books set in and around Bath, England. This latest story involves the children’s boarding houses of the late 19th century and I’m finding it difficult to draw a stop to the research. Impoverished children and the women who helped them is really pulling at my heartstrings!” she said.

“What are you reading now?” I wondered.

“I am usually reading two (sometimes three) books at any one time – right now, I have Nora Roberts’ The Witness by my bed and Sharon Sala’s Going Once on my Kindle. Unlike a lot of authors, I tend to read the sub-genre I am concentrating on in my writing because it means my mind is set to the atmosphere. As I am writing the proposal for my next romantic suspense this is the sub-genre I’ll be reading for a while. Once I’m done with that, I will immerse myself in historicals while working on my next Victorian.”

As you might can tell, Rachel is a fan of both print and digital books.

“I am a total bibliophile so print books (especially hardbacks) will always be a buying vice of mine, and there is nothing like the smell of a new book. Nothing!” she assured me. “At the same time, I wouldn’t be parted from my Kindle – I read from it every day while walking my dog and it’s always slipped into my purse before I leave the house. You never know when you are going to be stuck somewhere longer than anticipated!”

With as many irons as Rachel has in the fire, she told me that deadlines make writer’s block impossible. She treats her writing like a job and show up every day.

“Inevitably with every book I ground to a horrible halt around the halfway mark (approx 40,000 words), but I have learned over the years just to keep writing. I can edit a filled page whereas an empty one…you get the picture,” she told me.

“Which is your favorite book?”

“I’ve just finished my fifteenth novel – asking me to name a favorite is HARD!! If I’m being pushed to answer I would say, What A Woman Desires (coming Jan 2015) is my favorite Victorian romance to date and my favorite contemporary is What Belongs To Her (released Mar 2014). Having said that, I love all my books and put everything I have into each one to the point it is very hard to part with them once I’m done writing.”

She likes having many projects– and would really like to write a big, single title romantic suspense this next year.

“If you had to do your journey to getting published all over again, what would you do differently?” I asked.

“I would be more prepared for the promotion involved! Once upon a time publishers invested quite a lot of time and money in promoting their authors. Unfortunately, times and economics have changed which means authors are expected to do a lot of their own marketing/promotion. I wish I had factored that into my day from the beginning as I do now. It might have prevented me on missing out on sales opportunities early on in my career, as well not over committing myself on contracts.”

Writers receive a lot of advice so I asked Rachel for the best and worst pieces of writing advice she had ever received.

“Ha! This is a great question because I have received lots of great and not so great advice over my ten years of writing for publication. Here is the best and worst that immediately spring to mind:

“Best: Give yourself permission to write a crappy first draft.’ – this sets any writer free! Just write without worrying about a particular sentence or scene – strive to get to the end before any serious editing. Once you have the story done, you will know what you want to say as well as a good insight into who your characters really are. The following drafts will be much easier – promise!

“Worst – ‘Give up writing now, you will never be published.’ A contest judge back in 2006. Need I say more?”

Second Nature starts its story of lost love and second chances on an airplane, where the heroine Dana is experiencing her first airplane flight and is absolutely terrified. Dana is the real strength of this story. Her vulnerability makes her sympathetic and the author does a brilliant job of showing the effect Nick’s walking out without a word, had on her. You get the sense that Dana has only recently begun to recover from it and that her friend’s wedding is serving as an opportunity to finally put it all behind her and move on once and fall all. Because of that you feel particularly sorry for her when confronted with the shock of seeing Nick at the party thrown for her friends.

Dana’s best friend Amy is likable. She’s quirky and opinionated and has a lot of personality. Her part in trying to bring Dana and Nick together, while questionable on her part, was very much in-character and really helped her come alive for me.

Unfortunately I could not warm to the character of Nick. During the more steamy scenes between him and Dana, he had lines and actions that I was not entirely comfortable with. For example when she gets angry at him and says she’s going to walk home, his response is to grab her wrist, say “I don’t think so little lady,” and kiss her. The author does stress that Dana not only consents to the kiss but enjoys it. Still Nick didn’t not know that she would and there was a presumption and arrogance in the action given their history together. Also, at least to me, it felt oo aggressive.
In general Nick’s actions seemed more like a man who felt confident he’d win the girl, rather than those of a man who felt he had to earn her forgiveness. Indeed there seemed to be a disconnect between the way he acted and the way he thought during the passages when we saw things from his point of view.

Despite all of that however, I did like the actual relationship between the two leads. I enjoyed the honesty and maturity. Dana was open to what Nick had to say and the way she handled herself throughout the book only made me like her even more.

The story itself was very enjoyable however. I loved the short timeframe that story is told over and when was quite surprised by Nick’s story when he finally tells Dana why he left her five years ago. The book has quite a lot of plot and there was never a moment that felt dull.

Second Nature is a lot of fun. It’s very fluffy and sweet and makes for a light and enjoyable read. If you enjoy second chance romances, you’ll enjoy this one.
