Good intentions don’t guarantee anything.

People have reasons for even their most illogical decisions. One of the things I liked the most about this book was how explained the poor choices certain characters made. They were described in ways that illuminated why those decisions seemed like the right ones to the people involved without ever making excuses for anyone. It’s entirely possible to understand why someone did something and yet still hold them accountable for the harm they caused. Ms. Fox knows how to balance these things out just right.

There were quite a few people in this story, three of whom shared the spotlight as co-protagonists. While I enjoyed reading the backstories of everyone, including the history of almost every character did slow down the pacing of the plot. It also wasn’t necessary, especially for the supporting characters who were only part of the action some of the time. It made me wonder if I’ll be meeting some or all of them again in the sequels, although I was never sure if that is actually what the author is intending to do.

Social workers aren’t always written sympathetically, so I was glad to see how well they were treated in this tale. Their occupation is something that fascinates me for many reasons. It was nice to see it treated fairly even while acknowledging that no system or person is perfect. The nuances that were woven into these passages makes me curious to see where this series goes from here.

I also noticed a lot of switching among narrators. Moving between so many different points of view was distracting. No sooner could I adjust to one character’s way of describing the world around them then the narrative would move me into someone else’s mind. Virtually all of the character and plot development could have been accomplished with only one or two protagonists. It would have been much easier to enjoy what was happening without so many abrupt transitions.

Sheila’s character development was strong and rewarding. She is far from perfect, but her intelligence and resourcefulness made it easy for me to like her even when she acted unethically. There is something to be said for a well-rounded personality, and she most definitely has one of those!

Qualified Immunity has caught my attention. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys fiction about the legal system.

Heart of Fame, Book 8

Caitlin Reynolds doesn’t care if the rock star lookalike trying to get into her bar is who he says he is. Sticking to the rules is a big reason the Chaos Room is the hottest velvet rope in Sydney.

Okay, so he’s freaking hot, but she’s been ignoring her hormones since her fiancé left her to go be a doctor in Somalia and then went missing.

After a shattered knee ended his promising soccer career, it seemed only natural for Josh Blackthorne to follow in his father’s rock-god footsteps. Now he’s a megastar, lusted after by women—and men—the world over. But he’s been in lust with Caitlin since he saw her picture years ago.

When Caitlin realizes Josh is who he says he is, she’s the first to make it right. But no matter how badly his seduction makes her want to melt into his arms, there’s a ghost hanging over their heads. A ghost who turns out to be not so legally dead after all…

Blackthorne is Lexxie Couper’s final Heart of Fame book, and in it we have come full circle. In book one it was Nick Blackthorne, learning he was the father of a teenage son, Josh. In Blackthorne, Josh is the music star that has far eclipsed his father, and is ready to settle down to a quieter life.

It has been five years since Josh Blackthorne became the singer for Synergy, his father’s former band. Five years of success, surpassing his every expectation. But life isn’t all fun and happiness; Josh has picked up a stalker, and that man has been released from custody. Josh decides to escape to his roots back in Australia, and stay under the radar, laying low. When he and his long time pal Rhys decide on a night out, Josh decides to try out the hottest club in town, run by bodyguard Live Reynolds’ niece, Caitlin. Caitlin has worked hard to make her club the in spot, and she isn’t about to let to celebrity pretenders try to put one over on her. After all, with no entourage, these two can’t possibly be Josh Blackthorne and Rhys McDowell, two of Australia’s most celebrated public faces. Caitlin shouldn’t feel the way she does once she spends time with Josh; after all she was engaged before her doctor fiancé shipped out to Somalia and went missing. As Caitlin and Josh spend time together, she falls for him, and Josh feels the same for her, although all their time together is purely platonic, as Caitlin hides behind her ‘engagement’ to keep Josh at arm’s length. Just when life has shown them that love is there, Caitlin’s ‘fiancé’ returns, leaving Caitlin confused and Josh shattered. Can the two star crossed lovers find their way back to each other? Can Caitlin find a way to let Matt down easy and follow her heart?

I love this world that Ms Couper has built, and the characters that inhabit it. These are people who feel like old friends, and it is fun to see characters from earlier stories and how they have fared in life.

Caitlin Reynolds is smart, determined and has made a success of the club she built on her own. She is attracted to Josh, but is also afraid to get involved after the pain and trouble of her last relationship. I like watching as she learned to love while spending platonic time with Josh, coming back to life and wanting it all. I like Caitlin’s sassy attitude and her strength of character, and the bit of snark she reserves for friends and family.

Josh Blackthorne is sexy and smart and talented. But he has never become the hedonistic rock star that his father was; his band mates and his family have kept him grounded and sensible. He has had a small crush on Caitlin since seeing a photo of her on her uncle’s shelf years before, so meeting her and feeling the attraction between them flare to life just makes it better for him. I like that Josh was willing to go slow, not rush Caitlin into something before she was ready. And I really enjoyed some to their antics as they learned about each other’s wants and needs.

There are some twists and roadblocks to Josh and Caitlin’s happy ever after, and as with the rest of the story, these twists were handled with grace and intelligence by all the characters involved. There is chemistry and passion throughout this one, and I highly recommend the entire Heart of Fame series, but Blackthorne can also be read as a standalone story. I hope that Ms Couper will revisit this world from time to time, with updates on favorite characters and their lives.

A great new read from Lia Davis ! I don’t read many books in the New Adult genre, but I enjoyed this one. It’s a sweet shifter romance with lead characters that I wanted to get to know better. It’s a short one, but a compelling read all the same.

It’s Samira’s first time away from her home and the pack. She’s come to Harmony Springs to attend university and explore her new world. She unexpectantly finds her mate. Now, Gavin is a human so the story has a tiny bit of the forbidden romance element at first. It doesn’t bring about as much conflict as I’d hoped though. Still, it’s a good story because Sam and Gavin do have some differences before discovering that they have some things in common as well. Sam is a dominant Tiger, her cat is very agressive, and that plays a big part here. Then there is the suspense element. Things get out of hand because there is a bully on campus and Sam makes it her mission to take care of the situation.

The characters were wonderful. I liked how Sam was such a strong heroine, looking out for everyone. Actually, I liked Gavin even more though. He takes this new world in stride, recognizes that his mate’s strength, and still finds a way to take charge when the need arises.

In an itty bitty nutshell, this was a great story. Of course, I want more …..
