Three strikes and you’re out…

A series of strange accidents are occurring at Sirona, a luxury spa resort in the picturesque English countryside. Billionaire owner Nic Capitini wants the person responsible sacked. But the law requires he give three official warnings. Nic checks in undercover to gather the evidence he needs, and when he arrives to find his general manager enjoying the spa’s facilities, he doesn’t think it will prove very challenging.

Despite first impressions, it isn’t long before Nic realises that not only is Poppy Bradford beautiful, she’s a brilliant manager who runs the resort superbly. And the chemistry between them is undeniable. When Poppy herself is threatened, it seems clear the incidents are part of a systematic campaign of sabotage. Even though he believes she’s innocent, Nic knows Poppy is hiding something. But will learning her secret mean losing her forever?

Mixing business and pleasure can be problematic, but it can also be irresistible, especially when it comes to Poppy and Nic.

Nic is a self-made billionaire with a dark family past. His main focus in his adult life has been his business, so it’s understandable that he is very protective of it. When the events at one of his resorts endanger his success, he flies to England to personally sack the manager. He doesn’t expect to encounter the innovative, capable and feisty Poppy.

I loved Poppy’s character because she was independent and strong. She’d supported herself and her sister since her teens. Her energetic personality was a great counterpart to Nic’s principled view of things, and both helped create great chemistry and a deep conflict between them. It was easy to understand their motivation and sympathize with their struggles as they began to feel mutual attraction.

While the characters were well-developed, the story and plot were rather cliché and too predictable. I figured out who the saboteur at the resort was much too early, so there was practically no suspense left for me. Even the romance between Nic and Poppy developed in a predictable way and thus made it less enchanting. I wished for a surprise twist, something that would show them and their relationship in a different light.

The story ends with a happy ending that is perhaps a bit too fairytale-like and slightly spoils the otherwise lovely story. With all the troubles that Poppy and Nic had had, they were solved too easily in the end. I felt the plot needed either a more realistic ending, or maybe a longer finale in which the resolution would slowly come together.

What I really liked in this novel was the main character, Poppy, and I’d recommend the book to anyone who likes strong female characters.

Dorothy’s character development was strong. She is a deeply flawed woman whose prejudices and pessimistic attitude often made it difficult for me to like her. What kept me interested in her were the glimpses of her compassionate side that occasionally snuck through her prickly exterior. These moments made me anticipate the sequel. I’m looking forward to spending more time inside of Dorothy’s mind!

It would have been helpful to have a three-dimensional understanding of the other characters as well. While I certainly wouldn’t expect everyone in a short story to reveal their rich inner lives, there was room for more information about what Dorothy’s companions were thinking and feeling as everything around them fell apart. There were times when their flat personas made it hard for me to be invested in what happened to anyone other than Dorothy.

Some people would do the right thing regardless of what was happening around them. Others need the rules and structure that society provides in order to make good decisions. The most memorable parts of this tale for me involved how these two groups are sorted out. It’s easy to romanticize what life would be like in a culture that has completely broken down, but the reality of it is usually much grimmer. Sometimes this genre overlooks that, so it was refreshing to read something that takes a more realistic approach to what happens to the most vulnerable members of a society in a crisis.

Anyone who likes apocalyptic fiction should give The Silent Years: Mother a try.

As Christmas approaches in crumbling Charlton City, Detective Aloysius James and his partner, Noir, are at a crossroads. Figuring out how to reconcile their careers with their relationship is harder than catching the bad guys.

Now that Noir has learned to control her invisibility and is making a name for herself among the city s artist collective, Al senses there s something she s keeping from him. And he doesn t know how long they can remain partners. Or even lovers.

When a person is two parts of the same whole, how do you find resolution?

Lucy was a victim of a kidnapping and made to endure experiments at her captor’s hands. She becomes Noir, a girl who can become invisible. She is save by Al, otherwise known as Detective Fixit. The two have a stormy romance but one thing is for sure: they do love each other. There is a particularly spicy sex scene that was positively delightful and I wanted much, much more.

Noir/Lucy is trying to define herself in the real world. She lives with Al, but he too is struggling with how to treat this girl who originally came from the burbs. Is she just on a pit stop or is she involved for keeps? When a murder takes place in the holiday exhibit at the museum Noir is involved with for her art, the two have to work together to solve the mystery. Are Noir’s friends involved or is it an elaborate frame? Insert Noir’s special talent for invisibility, some akward social situations and a whole lot of snark and you have a story that kicks butt.

Vulnerabililty was a theme during the book and it really resonated with me. Noir/Lucy is two people, but why can’t she just be both? Al has to struggle with his fears of relationships and decide whether or not to trust her with his life and his case. Great tension and a wonderful plot development.

The romance between Noir and Al began before the book started but I had no trouble picking up what was happening. The love is there, but so is the mounting tension. Personal barriers, police vs. transient population, politics and greed all play a part in this great novel.

I will be going back for more books from this author and she is on my must read list for urban fantasy.

On a cold and still night, a frightened woman makes a frenzied escape down a wooded mountainside. Fear is her only companion. Silence is her only salvation.

Anna Nicholson had lived all her life under the shadow of prejudice in the remote village high on Mount Louis whose reclusive people were considered as wild and primitive as the wilderness from which they lived. So when she awakes one morning to find herself in a stranger’s barn with a rifle to her face and no memory of how she got there, she is overcome with a gripping fear. Yet, instinctively knew it did not arise from the big and burly cowboy standing directly behind the Winchester rifle or the other nine fierce cowboys who called the ranch home, but instead from a memory she could not recall. Mistaken for a mute teenage boy, Anna is able to hide unseen and unheard from an evil she could not recall.

Wade Haddock is the rough and tough but lonely cowboy who finds a frightened Anna in his barn. Convinced the isolated wilderness was no place for a woman, he allows Anna to hide away on his sprawling Rocky Mountain ranch believing her to be a mute teenage boy. While gradually succumbing to the bond growing between them, the wall around his guarded heart begins to slowly crumble. Only to discover Anna’s deception. And a memory that could destroy their love.

A lone woman running from an unnamed fear ends up in a ranch under the protection of a burly cowboy who believes her to be a mute teenage boy with no memory. It could either make their life or destroy it.

The hero in this novel is a cowboy who loves his land and has owned it since inheriting it from his father. Unlike his siblings who strayed more towards their English heritage, he loves his mountains and the ranch and never wanted to leave it. So when one day Wade Haddock finds a ‘mute teenage boy’ in a barn who can’t remember how he came to be there or the last 24 hrs, he hires the boy, who is really a young woman, to work on his ranch. He forms a bond with him/her. From there the journey leads them to finding love and the mystery of her life unfolds whilst bringing a torrent of pain and guilt that would take a lifetime to heal.

From the first page I was hooked. The writer knew how to spin the story to this reader’s liking. Still, there was a point when Anna gets settled on the ranch that the mystery of the book seemed to disappear or came to a standstill. The romance almost took over. There were a few places like that where the tempo would slow and just as I began thinking of maybe stopping the book something would actually happen. It was enough to keep me reading and wanting to know how Anna and Wade’s story would play out.

I loved the actions and personalities of all the characters. The intrigue into what happened to Anna added some heart stopping moments when things started unfolding. I don’t think readers will get bored because the characters and the romance between the two had just enough heart and heat. I liked that the author sprinkled in little bits and pieces of Anna’s past throughout the story rather than dumping it all in one place. It helped build the story and keep it going.

Mystery with romance. A heady combination.

However, when Marek finds out that the girl who nursed his brother to health was about to be punished, he kidnaps her to save her from that fate. Being that Marek is Archaean and Brynn is of Engel, both the people of Archaean and Engels had always had a dislike towards each other, this long held hatred is clearly shown between the two. The journey for them is not easy. Riddled with potholes and mountains, their journey towards each other and peace between them is long but well worth it.

The story woven by the author is fantastic. There is not only action but humor/comedy, romance and fantasy. All of these are intertwined with the characters and shows perfect harmony. I was lost in the book. Being that this is a historical book I was very skeptical at first because it seems that writers sometimes struggle to keep the dialogue and setting in its proper era. That means even the dresses, the houses, and villagers-everything-should be from that era. The descriptions were all I could have imagined. The author painted every scene in my mind so it was almost like I was watching it all happen right in front of my eyes.

The chemistry between Marek, the bounty hunter, and Brynn, the Royal, is sizzling and hot. The chemistry didn’t dwindle down with the development of the plot, it just matured, strengthened and burned brighter. Readers shouldn’t be disappointed with that in the least. The way the plot was developed, so intricate, I’d never have guessed that this is the writer’s first novel to be published. Everything fit and flowed seamlessly. From the smallest detail to the most exciting action sequence it made sense and surprised me at the end. I never thought that the story could go like this. I believe readers will be surprised but very happy with the results of it.

Sizzling romance, action and fantasy steeped in history, anyone who believes love conquers all will love this novel.

Who’s to say who is blind…and who sees clearly?

The Brothers Mortmain, Book 2

As Hannah approaches the imposing gates of Youlden Manor, she keeps reminding herself of why she is about to give her body to the master of the house. Two years ago, Lord Sebastian Youlden wronged her and their unborn child, and she cannot resume her life until she wreaks revenge.

When Sebastian awoke weeks after a duel that stole his sight, he discovered he’d lost something else—the woman he loved. Grief-stricken, he retreated to his isolated estate, where he occasionally sends for women from the local inn to temporarily assuage his loneliness. Yet there is something strangely compelling about the latest lady of the night who comes to pleasure him.

With constant demands of cialis online from canada , some medicine manufacturer companies have come to produce the medicine and have made them able getting hard in the bed. Erectile dysfunction, wholesale viagra online also known as ED, or impotence is referred to as erectile dysfunction. The erection sildenafil 50mg price time for both which is achieved normally or which is achieved after taking Kamagra tablets is a safe and effective treatment option for erectile dysfunction. Don’t worry its nothing to do with health risks or cialis sale uk greyandgrey.com something like that. The first time they come together, Hannah’s icy resolve begins to melt in the heat of his bed. As passion begins to burn away the veil of secrecy between them—and gradually lift the blindness from Sebastian’s eyes—the only thing left standing between them and a love that never died is the naked, painful truth.

In nineteenth century England, Hannah masquerades herself as a lowly whore to get revenge on the man who betrayed her. But that man, Sebastian, is broken and blind, living in a gloomy manor in the moors. What purpose does revenge serve against a man already beaten down?

The author, Evie North, has done a fine job in describing an historical setting far out on the moors of Yorkshire. The background serves the story, giving us subtle details of the era, the country, and even the weather, without suffocating the plot or overwhelming the characters.

Hannah is a wonderful character. She’s smart, strong, and driven. Plus, she embraces her feelings, in good and bad. On the one hand she seeks vengeance over the wrongs done to her, but on the other she feels a strong bond to the fallen hero, Sebastian. At one time they were intimately close and spoke vows of forever. Then tragedy struck, and both were cast into the wind, to try and find a place in a cold, cruel world, but are unable to shake the ghosts of the past.

We get varying points of view, one chapter at a time. Sometimes the points of view mix unexpectedly, which distracted me at times. Nonetheless, the narrative was alluring, and I turned pages onward to learn more. Sebastian’s cold, reserved nature serves as an intriguing counter balance to Hannah’s fiery fury. In fact, they seem well suited for one another.

The content of the story is more than laced with erotic interludes. The plot is filled with sensual scenes, as befits a man wanting to bed a ghost from the past and a woman pretending to be a whore. As the past events slowly unravel, we learn how things became the way they are today. That slow progression was done well, one piece at a time in the puzzle.

The writing is extremely sensuous, and I found every scene to serve a purpose. This wasn’t sex for the sake of sex alone. Each moment moved the plot forward, as the past became the present. I find North’s writing quite able and descriptive in the right places.

Without revealing the ending as a spoiler, I will nonetheless say that the overly rosy and sugary ending spoiled some of the enjoyment of the story. The leap from utter misery to perfect happiness just didn’t ring true. A woman’s worth seemed lessened by the physical change, and you’ll understand that reference once you read the last few plot twists.

Overall, this is a definitely worthwhile read. If you enjoy tortured heroes and the women who heal them with tempests and fury, you’ll love this. For the sensual scenes alone, this piece of historical erotica will titillate you from beginning to end.

ENDIRION is a thirteen year old boy like any other. Except his skin is green and it glows. And he doesn’t have any hair on his head or anywhere else on his body. Oh and he lives in a cave underground. But so does everyone on the poisoned Mother Planet. There is little to eat and what they do have is as mutated as the people themselves. Determined to find out the truth the boys set off on a dangerous journey that pits them against angry marshals, mysterious animals, mutant humanoids, and lands them in the belly of a Monstruwhale. It is a harrowing quest that takes them down remote tunnels, across the Lake of Fire, into the Madlands and a whole new world.

Not every authority figure is trustworthy. Figuring out which ones can be trusted is a lot harder than it looks, but Endirion thinks he’s up to the task. Is he right?

There’s a difference between having a good idea and following through with it to its logical conclusion. I was intrigued by the premise of this book right away. It was gratifying to see how well the original concept held up as the plot progressed. Every twist added valuable information to what I’d learned in the blurb about this universe. More importantly, each one also made me more curious to see how it would all tie together in the end.

I would have liked to see more character development in this tale, especially when it came to Endirion. Given his insatiable curiosity and short temper, I was surprised to see how little he changed over the course of the plot. He experienced harrowing adventures and yet didn’t seem to learn anything from them. It was never clear to me why this was the case.

This was a highly detailed story. It took the time to explain everything from what mutated food tastes like to what it’s like to live in a damp, dusty cave. These passages were a lot of fun to read because they made it so easy to imagine what it would be like to live in this society. It isn’t somewhere I’d particularly like to visit, although I am curious to know what the deer jerky that Endiron despises actually tastes like!

I’d recommend Left Behind Book One: The Forbidden Voyage to anyone who has ever wondered what humans might be like in the distant future.

Raj knows what he wants. He’s been waiting for his destiny for years. The only question is whether he can convince Andrew that they’re meant to be. That their meeting was written in the stars.

A repressed, heartbroken man walks into a bar, zeroes in on the most delectable behind he’s ever seen, and takes the hot young man home for a bout of sex. And that’s just the start of the story.

This novella is composed of three sections that had previously been published as three separate short stories. In the first, Andrew and Raj meet; in the second, Andrew meets Raj’s parents; and in the third and last, the couple take a holiday. Because of this structure of bringing three stories together without a bridge to connect them, there’s no sense of fluid continuation, unfortunately. Still, as simple erotic tales these achieve their goal in entertaining and titillating.

The first meeting is insta-love inspired by fate. Raj immediately believes Andrew is his one true love, fated to be his, and after a night of lovemaking Andrew agrees. Due to the length of this bar rendezvous and subsequent sex scene, the characters remain one-dimensional, without much depth to them. I wasn’t emotionally invested in the characters due to their lack of depth. If the word destiny hadn’t been thrown around so much, this would have been just another hookup at a bar, no muss, no fuss. The language is sensual and hot, so for an erotic quickie this is above average, even though the insta-love makes this unrealistic.

Raj’s parents surprise him during a party Andrew has set up for Raj’s 21 birthday—and they act badly, looking down their noses at Andrew being older. With their first fight, Andrew and Raj’s characters gain a modicum of depth. Nonetheless, this middle story presents new, unappealing side characters, and because of the fight and subsequent separation, there aren’t many happy-bubbly emotions happening here. The party itself had some confusing elements but this part of the story does end on a positive note. In short, this felt like a slice of life piece and a more memorable part of the book.

Raj is independently wealthy but Andrew works hard as a lawyer. Raj wants them to have a vacation, so off they go to Hawaii. Not much going on here plot-wise. Just nudity, sex, sightseeing, and sunbathing. Again, no real deepening of personalities. Frolicking and enjoying oneself are the themes here, and the overall tone is light and fun. The best part of the book for readers who don’t require too much depth.

TC Blue has written a relatively engaging story involving the same characters meeting, falling in love, and establishing themselves as a couple. This story is plot-light, but as a three act erotic quickie this works fine. The writing is efficient and to the point, plus sensual and sexy in the right spots. A nice read and a good way to sample this author.

I have never yearned for a kiss as much as the one between Jess and David. There is no doubt that Ms. McAllan knows how to build momentum. Furthermore, when the kiss did arrive it was all I had hoped for.

In general, this is how Secrets Shared develops. Little by little, the author unravels bits and pieces of Jess’s dark secret. Every little step made me want to learn more. I wasn’t the only one, David, the hero was also eager for more.

The connection between Jess and David is palpable from the start. Their talk, their banter, the way they act and react around each other is very well written and easily drew me into their heads.

David is my type of favorite hero: handsome, hard-headed, unable to give up, dominant, alpha and yet capable of laughing and enjoying life. Jess is his perfect counterpart: intelligent, beautiful, in control of her world, except when she’s with him. That change in attitude when David is around is what makes their Dom/sub relationship perfect. That, and the way Ms. McAllan describes their attraction and the sizzling sex that promptly ensues.

The story between David and Jess ends happily, but the author expertly delivers one more blow that has enticed me to read the next book in the series.

Secrets Shared is a well written spicy read with love, attraction and a little mystery, that you won’t be able to put down.

Fairytales by Madeleine Shade – Guest Blog

A special welcome to Madeleine Shade, who has stopped by Long and Short Reviews to talk about her Shady Lady Fairy Tales series.

*****

It seems as though fairy tales are everywhere these days and that’s fine by me. My childhood was spent in daydreams full of fairy tales and folklore. I still have some of those books, even though the bindings are crumbling and the pages are held together with rubber bands. As an adult, I started collecting fairy tales and mythology from cultures around the world. The oldest versions tended to be my favorite and before long I became an amateur scholar and a passionate archivist of fairy tales, folklore and mythology.

I have always been a writer and I actually worked as a successful freelance writer for more than a decade. Even then, I would sneak tidbits of folklore and allusions to fairy tales in my non-fiction work. On the side, I devoured scholarly books on the subject and dabbled in writing fantasy rooted in my studies. My entire life, including my work as a writer, crumbled after a series of unfortunate events and prolonged domestic violence issues forced me to change my identity. It was fairy tales that provided me the assurance that I could survive those difficult years as I worked to rebuild my life one step at a time.

With the increased attention to fairy tales in mainstream media, more and more people are discovering what I’ve known for years – fairy tales have deep roots digging into such dark social issues as forced unions, premarital sex, domestic violence, child abuse, incest, pedophilia, bestiality, rape, cannibalism, necrophilia, murder, disfigurement and dozens of other taboo topics. Bluebeard, a French folktale written by Charles Perrault, tells the story of a cunning nobleman who murders his wives. Being a victim of domestic violence, this story resonates with me and I read and reread Angela Carter’s version of the tale in her short story collection The Bloody Chamber: And Other Stories. It gave me hope and it did so with prose so erotic and lush that I became inspired to write my own versions of the older tales, the darkest stories in the fairy tale canon.

The stories in the Shady Lady Fairy Tales universe are not your traditional childhood bedtime stories. I have taken elements from various collections and looked for unusual ways to connect tales both familiar and obscure. The stories work as stand-alone novellas, however there are complicated ties that link them all together. For instance, characters make cameo appearances and magical items often change hands. In order to help readers navigate the tales, I’ve included author’s notes and a transcript of the original tales in the back matter of each book.

In August, I released Rumpled: An Erotic Twist on Rumpelstiltskin, which explores concepts of nurturing and the practice of erotic lactation. This was followed up by the September release of Porked: An Erotic Twist on the Three Little Pigs, which delves into the practice of bondage and discipline while exploring issues of self-perception and body image. At the end of September, I had a major setback in my progress when I fell and hit my head. I spent the month of October in a daze as I slowly healed from the traumatic brain injury. When I was finally allowed to return to my creative pursuits, I returned to my beloved fairy tales and wrote Tangled: An Erotic Twist on Rapunzel, which was released at the end of November.

In writing Tangled, I worked through the anger I still hold from being abused by a man who promised to take care of me. It has been the most difficult re-telling I’ve tackled to date. This story blends together elements from two tales (Rapunzel and Donkeyskin), while tackling forced marriage, incest and sexual ethics. By chance or fate, Tangled happens to combine two fairy tales with links to Christian saints. Like Rapunzel, Saint Barbara was locked in a tower in an attempt to keep her away from the rest of the world. Her feast day is December 4 and she is the patron saint of armorers, architects, artillerymen, mathematicians and prisoners. And, as in the fairy tale Donkeyskin, a king decided to marry his daughter Dymphna after his wife died. When the girl resisted, he beheaded her. Saint Dymphna’s feast day is May 15 and she is the patron saint of mental disorders, neurological disorders, runaways and victims of incest.

On the editorial calendar, Hunted: An Erotic Twist on Little Red Riding Hood is scheduled for release in December and will be followed up with Tempted: An Erotic Twist on Snow White in January and Snowed: An Erotic Twist on The Snow Queen in February. Other fairy tales scheduled in 2015 include erotic twists on Cinderella, Diamonds and Toads, Sleeping Beauty, The Swan Maiden, Beauty and the Beast, and East of the Sun and West of the Moon.
