Holiday Heart Wishes by Lucinda Race

When social media director Vera Davis loses her job in the city, she takes her adorable, goofy rescue pup and heads home for the holidays, to her sweet hometown of Dickens. She’s hoping to move in with her mom and start a new business. But her drive is interrupted when she rescues a handsome, snowbound stranger stranded by side of the road.

Newspaper reporter Tony Barbee may be a stranger to Vera, but Dickens is his hometown, too. He’s come to spend Christmas with the uncle who raised him. But Vera and Tony are in for a surprise when they find her mother and his uncle living together. Aren’t they moving too fast?

Tony and Vera share something besides relatives in a blossoming romance: a tradition that when they see the Christmas tree in the gazebo on the village green—a scene right out of a Norman Rockwell painting—they should make a Christmas wish. Though they resist their own growing attraction to one another, Christmas is a time of surprises and gifts, and the unexpected answer to a heartfelt holiday wish may bring Vera and Tony the greatest gift of all…

Visibility was down to zero. What made Vera think driving home tonight was the best idea? She hunched closer to the steering wheel, trying to peer through the blanket of snow. A better plan would have been to wait until morning, when at least she could see. But when the going gets tough, the only place she wanted to go was home. With her bags packed in the trunk and her sweet rescue pup, Mollie, riding shotgun, she should be home in less than a half hour.

Up ahead, there was a dark mound on the shoulder of the road. Oh shoot. It was a truck and the hood was up. She slowed, not that she was going fast; it was more like a gentle glide to a stop. She pressed the passenger window button and it slid down. Snow fell inside and Mollie blinked at her.

“Hey, are you okay?”

A dark-haired hunk appeared from under the hood. He held up his hand in greeting.

His smile was slow and easy, which gave her heart an unexpected flutter.

“Thanks for stopping. I figured I’d be out here all night and turn into a popsicle.”

Mollie’s tail began to thump against the seat. She was never this excited with strangers. This guy was definitely someone she would like to have met back in the city.

He leaned into the window. “I’m Tony Barbee.”

She gave a little wave. “Nice to meet you. I’m Vera.”

“Any chance you can give me a lift into Dickens? I think my alternator is dead. I’ve got no power.”

She looked into the blinding snow ahead of her. She couldn’t just agree to pluck a stranger from the side of the road on a dark and wintry night.

“Hey, I get it. Strange guy. Not the best of ideas.” He took a step back. “Any chance you could call a tow truck? My cell died too.”

“Sounds like you’re having a tough day.” She gave him a tentative smile; she knew how that felt. “I’ll do one better. What if I park behind you and wait while the truck comes? This way, you won’t get hit from behind. Take it from me, your truck is virtually invisible until you’re right on top of it.”

He gave her a snow-melting smile. “That sounds great. Thanks.” He pointed to his truck. “I’m gonna wait in there. No sense getting even more covered with snow.”

She called the Dickens Police Department and the dispatcher said someone would be out soon. After backing her car up, Vera waited in its warmth, flashers on. Mollie, her goofy retriever mix, looked at her from her comfy plush bed in the passenger seat as if to say they were warm but what about the other guy?

“I’m not going out there. You watch the news with me. It’s full of crazy people.” She shook her head. Here she was having a conversation with her dog about a man who might be freezing in his truck. “We’ll give it ten minutes and if no one shows up to help, like the tow truck, I’ll invite him to get into the backseat.” She glanced at Mollie. “Acceptable?”

The pup lay her head down on her paws and closed her eyes.

It’s the Holidays and Jessica Munroe seems destined for misery. Nonetheless, she is trying to make the best of it. Her fiancé, Jake, an emergency room doctor, dumped her for his nurse and just two weeks prior, she had to put her dog, her best friend, Mazy to sleep.

The pain of losing both the man she loved and her best friend has taken her to a new low. Jessica, determined not to stay down, is now hard at work trying to push through the holiday season by doubling up on the Christmas lights and decorations she’s putting up outside her residence.

As Jessica works, a big brown scruffy dog appears in her yard and refuses to leave when she tries to shoo him away. He’s filthy, looks hungry, and seems like he needs help. A dog lover, Jessica takes him to her vet who discovers a metal bone shaped tag buried in his matted fur. The tag reveals his name, Sam, and a phone number to call if he is lost or injured.

Sam’s owner, Trey Musgrove, is in the hospital, the victim of a head-on collision. Now, Jessica’s life is about to change forever thanks to Sam, this big brown scruffy lovable dog.

Kindness never goes unrewarded.

Jessica was a deeply kind and empathetic woman. She often bent over backwards to help others with no expectation of reciprocation or reward. Honestly, she’s the sort of person I would want to have around in a crisis. There was no limit to the thoughtful things she did to make the lives of other people better. My one wish for her was that she would finally get to be on the receiving end of all of the joy she created for those around her. She didn’t seem like the sort of person who would ever ask for something like that, but she sure did seem to need it.

The scenes that included Jessica getting regular updates about the health of the stranger whose dog she was taking care of yanked me out of the plot because of the strict rules that nurses, doctors, and other healthcare workers must follow about sharing any information about their patients without consent. This is behavior that can result in healthcare professionals getting fired or paying huge fines in the United States, so I was quite confused about why it kept happening in this novel. There was no explanation for why no one was worried about this. It would have made so much more sense for a grateful relative to share updates with Jessica so she’d know if or when Sam might be able to go live with Trey again.

The island Jessica lived on had such a strong sense of community. Most of the people who lived there had known each other for years, and they were always around when someone needed assistance or had extra cookies to share. There was something wonderful about reading about all of the celebration they had, especially the ones that were somehow related to Christmas. They sure knew how to have a good time and include anyone who wanted to join in.

Paws for Christmas was a heartwarming read for the holiday season.

Only if he overcomes these obstacles will Virgil spend the better part of his afterlife with Barb. If he can survive dating.

Barb is having quite possibly the worst night ever, when she’s rescued by Virgil – a cute stranger who happens to be a vampire. But being undead is nowhere near as glamorous – or exciting – as Barb is expecting and Virgil has no qualms about correcting her many misperceptions on what being undead and living for a really long time is truly like.

Sit back with a huge alcoholic drink, disengage your brain and prepare to laugh and then wince in sympathy at this super funny short story. Barb is totally having the worst luck and evening I’ve ever heard about (the author lost me when the car door closed on Barb’s dress and it ripped right off her body – although the visual was incredibly funny and made me giggle). I was a bit sad that both Barb and Virgil fell pretty much into insta-lust with each other, but couldn’t fault the author for that since this is quite a short story and Barb and Virgil really did just click well together and I was super impressed at how they both connected over blues and music – it really helped sell me on the speed and intensity of how the relationship started between them both. I was also impressed while the attraction between Barb and Virgil was nearly instant, they didn’t just jump directly into bed with each other – that made the whole instant-attraction thing a lot easier for me to handle, when I could get to know their characters a bit better before they became physically intimate.

I loved how Virgil shattered many of Barb’s misconceptions and poor taste in paranormal reading material – I found the whole scene made me laugh out loud and I still giggled upon a second re-read. While the plot aspect of the story was fairly short I enjoyed how it was well-woven throughout the growing romance between Barb and Virgil and also liked how even though it was simple, the plot was coherent and added a good amount of tension to the story as a whole.

Fun and frivolous, with some modern, relatable and outstanding characters, I found this to be a humorous and really enjoyable, sexy romance story.

My Take on Critique Groups by M.T. Bass – Guest Post and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. M.T. Bass will be awarding a $50 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

My take on critique groups…

You can’t live with them…and you can’t live without them.

I spent quite a bit of time going through the local writers’ groups listed on MeetUp.com and “auditioned” a whole bunch of them out. I went through some of them like a revolving door. One group was intensely focused on Fantasy/Sword and Sorcery stories—they spent at least an hour discussing the details in a sword fight at that meeting. And they basically admitted that they weren’t really interested in reading my kind of stuff. Adios, amigos.

I’ve finally ended up in two groups that I’ve gone to for years—well, at least I did before the stupid COVID-19 scamdemic shutdowns. One group has suspended their meetings and the other has transitioned to Zoom calls. Anyway, the first group allows 5 minute cold reads, while the smaller Zoom group takes submissions of up to 7500 words two weeks in advance for more detailed critiques. It’s a good mixture.

As writers, we work alone, and sometimes that’s a nice cozy cocoon to hide in. But if you intend to publish, you have to know what other people are going to get out of your writing. As the author, the surprise is gone for me: I pretty much know what is going to happen in my story. What I don’t know is what the uninitiated reader thinks about who the characters are and what is going to happen to them. And that is exactly what I am listening for in the group’s comments.

Sometimes it’s difficult to pull that information out of the comments. People have a lot of things to say in these groups—and not much of it is really about your words and your story. You have to really listen and sort through the critiques and decide whether they are advocating their particular theories of “creative writing” and whether those theories have anything to do with what you have written. Sometimes not and it goes in the discard pile.

Beyond that crucial information, of course, I get plenty of grammar corrections, which is okay, though I have an excellent editor for my work. I also listen closely to those folks who have an expertise that I don’t, like the ex-Navy SEAL, the FBI agent, and the lawyers in the cold read group. They offer insightful corrections and additions to my military, law enforcement, and lawyer-type characters.

And sometimes you really get a gem. I read the first chapter of a novel I called Exit Alley, and Dave, the moderator, gave me the real title from the words in my story: Murder by Munchausen.

On the other hand, I also get to throw in my two cents worth on the works submitted by other folks. I’m not real good at off-the-cuff reactions to the cold reads, so my comments are usually limited. I prefer to put more time and thought into what I’m going to say. For the long-form group, I typically read the submissions at least twice before I comment: once as just a reader, then as an editor, when I start making my comments. Sometimes you have to be tough on the writing, but there is no need to be mean when you are critiquing.

Hopefully, you’ll make a connection that will help them out. And that’s what I’m looking for.

“Break left,” I radioed Angel, jammed the throttle forward, and yanked the stick back and to the left in a climbing turn to circle around on the enemy position. I searched back over my shoulder for a road or trail leading out of the area to anticipate their possible direction of movement. There was a small scar coming down off the hill to the southeast.

As we came around three hundred and sixty degrees, lining up on the small section of the jungle where red and green tracer rounds floated up our way, the intensity of the fire began to wane as the rebels understood what was about to come their way.

“Take the trail. Southeast,” I radioed Angel.

He clicked his mike twice to acknowledge the one-two punch plan and throttled back to drift away in trail to follow up my initial attack on the enemy positions with rocket fire as they inevitably fled to melt back into the jungle.

I banked hard and began to dive down on the hilltop. The tracers began to concentrate on my nose. I lit up my guns, spreading the field of fire left and right with a little dance on the rudder pedals. I felt the Texan buck up a bit as rockets left the rails. I followed the plumes of their engines halfway to the target before I had to pull up, but noticed the intensity of the enemy fire had waned considerably.

“Way to go, Batman,” Angel radioed. “Let me just clean up this little mess you made.”

Behind me, Angel strafed the road and fired his rockets in so close that he seemed to clip the top of the fireball from the warhead explosions.

I circled back and took a path coming back up the road, stitching it with .303 caliber fire…

10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Me by Dexter C. Channing – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Dexter C. Channing will be awarding a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Me
This is quite a funny topic to write about because most people don’t know anything about me. I’ve been called a crazy, an imposter (not quite sure who I’m supposed to be, to be honest), an enigma, amongst other things. They’re the kinder ones. I admit, I like the enigma one, because I don’t really like people to know the real me, so be prepared for everything I tell you about me to be a red herring.

I think the drive in the modern age for people to know everything about everybody is part of what I resent about technology. You log into a computer for instance, and someone somewhere who created the operating system knows you’ve just done that. Then they know where you live because of the IP address giving them location information. Everyone’s movements can be disseminated and examined electronically, so that the twenty first century affords no-one any privacy.

I like my privacy too. I’m very much a ‘close the door and take off the external persona’ type of person. Maybe that is something to do with my job, I’m not sure. People know what they need to know about me in my type of profession – I’m not a full time writer – and I guess that’s the first thing you’ve learnt about me! Privacy is an important commodity and it’s being eroded by the very topic which I wrote about in my two books, Virus and Resistance.

In the UK, for instance, they have this Trace and Test technology, where they have an app that you (by choice at the moment, but that’s gonna change, you watch this space) download onto your phone and it basically records your movements. They dress it up as something else, but in actual fact, they have tabs on you. They aren’t interested in whether you are in a high risk Covid area, they’re interested in where you are going and what you’re spending your money and your time doing. It’s all about control.

I don’t like that (is that thing two?). I don’t like the idea of some sort of big brother industry taking that much of an interest in me that they know when I’ve gone to the john. It’s intrusive. People are having their civil liberty eroded in front of them, and the worst of it is – they are letting it happen!

Okay so, we’ve got two things.

Number three – surprise, surprise – I live alone. I much prefer my own company to anyone else’s. I live by this motto – ‘Trust No-One’ and it works. Trust, once it’s been destroyed by someone, is a hard thing to find again. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Actually, scrap number three, that’s a lie, I forgot the cat. I live with my cat. I like cats. That’s number four, by the way. In fact, I much prefer animals to people. Let’s face it, when was the last time an animal let you down?

I’m doing pretty well, here, I’m on number five already. I love the wilderness and people who think they know me are going to tell you that I prefer to live in the city, because of its anonymity and that would be correct. But preferring to live somewhere doesn’t mean you have to like it. You’re more exposed in the country. Everyone knows everyone else.

Okay, so I’m running out of things I know about myself! Number six, okay, my mother (yes, I have one, all you doubters!) was a beauty queen. I remember being about ten and awkward and gawky, which I think I still am, but there was my mother, elegant, beautiful, sophisticated. All the things I’m not.

Number seven – As a child I could speak another language, I mean other than English, but I’m not telling you which one. After my grandparents died, I had no-one else to converse with, so I lost the ability. I can remember some phrases, but not many.

This is getting harder because hardly anyone knows me anyway. Number eight – I’m an only child. I think my folks had me and decided not to risk it again.

I’m almost there, I know myself a little more now, too. So, number nine, let’s see. One of my great, great grandparents was Norwegian. That’s about all I know myself, although I have been to Norway. I’ve been to all the Scandinavian countries. Marvelous places.

Right, we’re done – number ten – I really wish I could fall in love. This last one is a shocker, considering I’m such an introvert. I’m probably the least romantic person on the planet, too. But I think that it would be nice to fall in love and for someone to love me back. Have I been in love before? Once. It ended badly, very badly, I guess there’s no such thing as a happy ending, is there?

In New Normal – Resistance, a deadly pandemic is sweeping across the globe. Country after country is disintegrating into a lawless, terrified conclusion as it soon becomes apparent that there is a fate worse than death. Violence and discord stalk the streets; governments are beginning to introduce martial law and curfews in a futile attempt to regain control of a world thrown into disarray by a silent, unseen killer.

Jolyon Jones, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, knows that it is a race against time to find a vaccine for this highly infectious virus before the consequences wipe out humanity. He also knows that the virus is not the only killer. Small pockets of resistance are slowly emerging; survivors ready to fight not only against the virus, but against each other.

In the midst of the battle for survival, the faithful know that their wait for the Second Coming is nearly over. They know that He is here again. But who is He and will He be able to stop the virus before science reaches an apocalyptic solution?

Resistance is the second in Dexter C. Channing’s New Normal Trilogy. The first being New Normal – Virus, which was released earlier in the year. The final instalment is due to be released at Easter 2021.

Across the Atlantic, early evening sunlight bathed the White House in an auroral light, shimmering in the gentle breeze which sighed across the velvet green lawns. Inside the Oval Office, nobody cared for the view, despite how peaceful and ordinary it looked.

The President was wearing his most mulish look as the Secretary of State and the Defence Secretary reeled from his latest revelation. For a moment, only the distant wail of sirens could be heard in the thick silence which surrounded them following the President’s declaration. The sound mingled with the groan of despair from the Defence Secretary, an involuntary reaction to what he had just listened to.

‘Mr President, Sir,’ the Defence Secretary looked at the other man and felt like smashing his fist into the supercilious expression he found staring back at him. Did the President not understand what was happening and how there was a need for unity, not discord within global relationships? Obviously, he did not! ‘Could I ask you if Professor Benjamin did this without coercion?’

Spreading his arms out in a gesture that indicated he did not know or understand, the President replied, ‘All I know is that I have been told of a call made to Beyler School of Medicine from Professor Benjamin’s office. Who instructed him to make the call, I don’t know, but I do know that if there is a second spike, another “mutation”, then Watpharm had better understand it will need Gileath to bail it out of its fucking mess, pissing about with some bloody college students and those yellow skinned freaks!’

‘This has been done as retaliation because what, Watpharm didn’t want to set up shop with an American Company? Jesus fucking Christ!’ The Defence Secretary’s fist came down on the desk, making the other two men jump. ‘We’re in the middle of a fucking world changing crisis, Mr President, Sir! We have the threat of extinction and we have got non-humans running amok on the fucking planet and some idiot professor wants some more business for his company?’

‘This administration gives Gileath a hell of a lot of dollars,’ the President glared at his Defence Secretary, ‘and I don’t want those dollars wasted! Working with Watpharm might also go some way to restoring America’s credibility on the world stage.’

‘I think what the Defence Secretary is trying to say, Mr President, is that if there is a second spike or another mutation of this current outbreak, then the world stage may not have much of an audience left to play to, Sir.’ The Secretary of State intervened.

The President threw his papers down onto his desk and stormed out of the office wearing a truculent expression.

The Secretary of State shook his head. ‘Sometimes, the thought crosses my mind that a couple of cups of disinfectant or bleach wouldn’t go amiss.’

They were both thinking of a disastrous video link press conference which had been held towards the end of April. It had been beamed around the globe, one of the few broadcasts that were made that day and America still hadn’t recovered from the backlash. Both men looked to the door, which the President had just slammed.

‘How much is a bottle of Clorax these days?’ Asked the Defence Secretary and they both burst out laughing, amazed that they still could.

About the Author: Dexter C Channing is something of a mystery to the literary world – and indeed, the team at Just Jane Publishing has never actually met this author, having been introduced through another writer during the Covid 19 Lockdown.

The elusive author prefers to remain an enigma to everyone, simply stating a love of city life as opposed to the country because “it’s easier to disappear in a big city where nobody knows your real self”. That real self is “single, not available” and prefers being alone to the “ruinous pathway of a love affair”.

Fact, fantasy and science all combine in this author’s often dark writing style, which takes you through conspiracy theories to conclusions you’d rather not reach in the real world. Or maybe, as Dexter says, you’re already there.

Is Dexter C Channing an American? There’s a possibility, but then anything is possible, if you believe what goes on in Channing’s imagination, often taking us to places we’d rather not go. It’s clear at some point that Channing did live in America, and still has some links to Miami and Deerfield Beach.

More of late, Channing has been residing in England and has actually allowed the team at Just Jane Publishing access to a list of favourite places which include Chesterfield in Derbyshire, Liverpool, and a surprising one, given the penchant for city living – a tiny village called Kettlewell, in Yorkshire.

What does a mysterious author who nobody really knows do when they’re not writing? Channing watches. Things. Events. People. Then they get written about. Is Channing a one trick pony? Far from it. There are links with law, property, and a love of music, which is always in the background when Channing is writing.

“Virus” was the first of Dexter C Channing’s world-changing trilogy of novellas. “Resistance” is the second in the series, and the final, concluding book, “Resurrection” will be published by Just Jane Publishing around Easter, 2021.

She wants him and he wants her, but they’re determined to keep each other at arm’s length—so they think.

I love the Immortals After Dark series and I couldn’t wait to read this one. A Demon King and a Sorceress…what can go wrong? Lots, really. I liked the pacing of the story, but at times it seemed a little choppy. I get the author was trying to build up anticipation and it worked. I was drawn right into the story and had to keep reading.

Rydstrom was my favorite character. For a demon, he’s a darn upstanding guy. Really. He wants to do the right thing, despite being a demon. I liked how he tried to protect Sabine and tried to do what was best. There were times he seemed almost too good to be a demon, but that wasn’t a bother to me.

Sabine was different. I guess what bothered me the most about her was that she was a bad girl—which was fine for me—but she could be despondent and just plain mean. I didn’t see what Rydstrom saw in her. She wasn’t cute, but rather rotten. I didn’t mind her being a bad girl. I like reading bad girls, but let her be a bad girl. Let her be bad, but have some sweetness about her. She wasn’t rotten to the core.

The ending left a little to be desired, in my mind. But that might have just been me and the time I read the book. It was still packed with tension and action, so it kept my attention.

If you’re looking for a story that’s hot (like scorch-the-screen hot) and fast-paced, then this is the one for you.

Irena and Roberto were blissfully happy together – even moreso when a number of their friends and family can come together over the Christmas break to celebrate the holiday together. With so many of them mated and settled they can enjoy the pace and happiness this special time brings them.

I picked up this short story having not read any of the previous books in this series. While the family-Christmas holiday aspect of the story stands well alone, there are a half-dozen main characters all paired up from the previous stories and the first few pages felt like a glut of info-dumping where they were all introduced in a rush. Once this had passed I felt the story really evened out into a paranormal holiday story filled with interesting characters and a lot of friendship and love.

Readers looking to catch up on how a number of the previous characters all spent Christmas together should find this an excellent and brief catch-up on how everyone is progressing. The short story is fine as a paranormal shifter family-style Christmas tale but I feel it only really shines when readers already know and are attached to the characters.

Filled with warmth and family-of-choice love this Christmassy short story is a quick and solid read.

How to Handle Negative Criticism

Negative criticism does not bother me at all. I understand that some people will always have something negative to say so I just keep writing whether they like my stories or not. My mom told me a long time ago that people will talk about you whether you are doing good or doing bad, so I just let people be who they are. Regardless, I know this is my calling so I will do this for as long as I can. I understand that everything is not perfect, but I am always working on improving my craft.

Now constructive criticism is something completely different and I always welcome it. I love when readers come back to me with suggestions of ways to make my stories better. It is just another way for me to engage with them and exchange some ideas and thoughts about the book.

Most of the comments I get from people are positive though. I try to write things that people can relate to so we can have a discussion afterwards. That is probably my strongest trait when talking about my writing style. People do not really come to me with negativity because they relate to what I have written.

Daquan rushed back to his SUV. He grabbed his tablet and studied the app. It still said Aviana was at the school. There was nothing else to do but wait so that’s what he did. Thirty minutes passed and there was still no sign of Aviana. Just as Daquan got ready to pull off, someone came walking around the corner. At first, he paid them no attention. But they started towards Aviana’s car and instantly made Daquan watch them closer. He watched as they entered Aviana’s car. Although they dressed in all black Daquan knew that person wasn’t his wife.

The mystery person pulled off in Aviana’s car, leaving Daquan conflicted on what to do next. He quickly decided to follow Aviana’s Altima as it traveled through West Philly until it reached Upper Darby. The Altima pulled onto a small block and Daquan carefully followed. Soon the driver pulled into a driveway of a small house and shut the engine off. From down the block, he noticed the driver didn’t get out of the car. Slowly, he drove down the icy street, squinting his eyes at the Altima, hoping to get a look at the driver. No luck. There was no way he was going to be able to see inside with the combination of tint on the window and darkness outside. Instead, Daquan made a mental note of the house.

I love the work of Susan Carlisle and grab her books as soon as I see they’re available. I wasn’t let down at all with this story. Great writing, great pacing and characters that are so realistic. That’s what I want in a book and I got them with this one.

Carter loves his son and has been through the wringer. I liked that he was human, rather than the superhuman I-have-to-do-everything kind of guy. He’s trying to balance and it’s not always possible. That made me root for him. Then there’s Liz. She’s got issues and it makes her just as human. I liked that she wasn’t perfect.

I loved the slow build-up between these two, as well. This story takes place before Christmas and it was fun to see how these characters come to see each other as more than friends. I love it.

If you want a story that’s full of holiday spirit and love, then this is the one to check out!
