He’s got one last chance
To make things right

Billy King may be smiling under his black Stetson, but the plain truth is this cowboy-turned-racer is hurting: for his horse back in Memphis, for his girl with one boot out the door, and for his faltering career thanks to an injury that’s not getting any better. The moment he’s free from the press circuit, Billy bolts home—resolved to heal, and ready to win Taryn’s heart a second time.

Hopefully, before the love of his life is gone for good.

Taryn Ledell never wanted to fall for sweet blue eyes and a deep southern drawl. As a World Superbike racer, she had plans, and none of them involved playing second fiddle to any man. But now he’s back, and she’s forced to make some hard choices. With her sponsors eager for a decision, Taryn finds herself tangled in all the lines they’ve drawn in the sand. But broken bones and broken hearts don’t heal overnight, and the cost of forgiveness can be sky high: unless Billy can prove that his heart never left the ranch…or her.

My whole heart was thumping strong in my chest while everything in me begged to kiss him. But I couldn’t bring myself to make the first move—I wanted Billy to go for it. To step up and take the risk and feel all the elation of me rewarding it with full-on acceptance because for once, what a guy wanted was exactly what I wanted, too.

He let out a deep sigh that was almost more of a groan, sinking my hopes. “You’re not making this easy on me at all, are you?”

“Making what easy?”

He looked away, unable to hide his smile. “Nothing.”

It was too much fun; I couldn’t resist. The way he was, the way he made me feel. “You want to kiss me, Billy?”

He grinned at the ground. Probably, I was pushing too hard, too fast, but I didn’t really know any other way to go. Not when I wanted him to kiss me that damn bad.

When he lifted his head, there was no fear in his blue eyes. Just a pure kind of acceptance that he wasn’t going to be happy until he got what he wanted. “Yes, ma’am. I do.”

My heartbeat took off as Billy stepped closer, his hat hiding both of us from the February moon. The rich scent of him was too tempting: I pulled it deep into my lungs, drowning in the masculinity rippling off him. But he still wasn’t touching me, no matter how much I wanted him to.

“Would that be all right?” he whispered.

I don’t remember nodding or breathing, just beaming at him and praying my self-restraint could hold on a little bit longer. “I’ll answer that in a minute.”

Billy smiled, and then I finally got everything I’d been craving. He brushed his fingertips over my cheek with a touch softer than the wishing petals of a dandelion, hooking a knuckle under my chin and tilting my lips up to his. My eyelashes fluttered closed, my pulse thundering through my veins as I waited and waited, desperate for the first crash of his mouth against mine.

All I felt was space between us, growing longer and wider until it just wasn’t anymore—the first brush of his lips so soft, I wasn’t even sure that I’d felt him. But Billy was there, his kiss as slow as his drawl, careful and gentle, and little more than a sip of an ocean I was eager to disappear into.

I took his jaw between my palms, prickly with stubble but sculptured and strong. Drawing him down to me, I quickly melted into the shocking plumpness of what I’d considered to be thin lips but now felt rich and deep, and a whole new shade of delicious. Then he moaned, his hands squeezing my waist and pressing me up into him. It was like embracing iron, rippled and smooth, the bite of his buckle scraping my belly, and my hips pressing hungrily toward the long, thick swell growing behind his zipper.

He took a needy gasp for air, and I hugged him closer, slipping my tongue into his mouth. A growl churned from low in his throat as the kiss turned dirtier, the strike of his tongue and bite of his lips getting wonderfully sharp. But not sharp enough for what I wanted when my body was catching fire everywhere he touched me: his wide palm secure on my lower back, his other hand buried in my hair and massaging my scalp.

He felt so good, too good. And he hadn’t grabbed my ass once.

“You know”—I leaned back, my hand on his chest and Billy breathing hard, blinking at me with his hands suspended in place—“you don’t kiss like a bull rider.”

His brow furrowed, the slightest spark of suspicion in his eyes. “How many bull riders you kissing?”

Nice.

“Hopefully none.”

He half rolled his eyes, but he was smiling again as he settled his hands on my waist, his thumbs petting the space leading to my hips. All trace of jealousy totally and completely gone, thank God. “All right, what do you got against bull riders?”

I did my best to calm my libido—which wasn’t helped by tapping his rock-solid chest with a single finger. But I wanted to set the record straight before we stumbled into a problem. I was never going back to that life, not when I had waited nine hours for Travis to wake up and not when I had been more terrified than I knew a person could be when Jace was airlifted. “You put your bull above everything else. And I’m telling you right now, Billy King, no eight-second bull ride is ever going to come before me.”

Billy didn’t groan, didn’t flinch, didn’t blink. He just nodded. “Okay.”

“I’m serious.”

Serious as Bonnie Landry’s black funeral dress and the poem she brokenly read over Beau’s glistening coffin.

“Yeah?” Billy drawled, but his smile was clearly teasing as his hands slid from my waist to lock somewhere over my lower back. He pulled me closer until I was nearly gasping from the tease of his erection against my hip, straining his zipper and parching my mouth. His eyebrow arched in the picture of confidence, then he leaned down close enough to kiss me again, whispering against my lips, “Good thing I’m not a bull rider no more…”

Good thing indeed.

Top Ten Tuesday: Book Festivals I’d Love to Go to Someday

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

I purposefully chose book festivals that are not set in North America for today’s post because I know so much less about them than I do the ones set on the same continent I live on. I dream of attending all of these events someday.

If you’ve been to any of these fairs or festivals, please let us know what you thought of them! Which booths should we visit first? What are the most delicious things to eat while you’re there? What other sites should we see in that city before and after the big event? I want all of the details.

World-renowned composer and pianist Elisabeth Winters returns to the United States from Europe only to discover her life is in terrible danger. Though she wants nothing but to perform her concerts, she finds herself embroiled in layers of political and personal turmoil that have intertwined through the years she’s been abroad. The stakes are high—her life is in certain jeopardy.

When she meets handsome William de la Cuesta under odd circumstances, she can’t deny her immediate feelings of trust. Yet, there is something that disturbs her about him, as well…a memory she can’t quite grasp. How can she trust someone she doesn’t know—someone like de la Cuesta, who could have everything to gain by her murder? Does she have a choice?

As Elisabeth invokes controversy on many levels, her world becomes even more chaotic with the treachery she discovers taking place in her own inner circle. As the daughter of a prominent senator who was murdered many years before, she takes up the causes he fought and died for—and discovers those powerful men who killed him are now out for her blood, as well.

Elisabeth believes she can—for love of family, country, and William de la Cuesta—the love of her life— taking the risk of A DANGEROUS LIBERTY is worth everything!

A Dangerous Liberty challenged me. A novel that is supposed to wrap you up in the injustices of America’s past has instead artfully reflected that of our present. Fighting for liberties and freedoms for different races and genders, this is the kind of novel that could wake society up about our not so distant indiscretions and failings.

The language in this novel is so poignant and clear that it has reached out of the pages and grasped hold onto my mind like a vice. And even through this revolutionary rhetoric, we find undeniable love. William de la Cuesta and Elisabeth Winters are characters that resonate deeply with an aching world. Their own lives within the story are painted with many painful memories that hold them back from their true desires, but they have not held them back from trying to change the world around them for the better.

Watching two main characters setting their lives on the backburner for the greater good of the rest of their society is truly unique, and the tension created within this dynamic is incredibly tantalizing. The differing perspectives on each situation is enlightening and delightfully frustrating when the two are together but not hearing one another’s thoughts.

Elisabeth Winters is an ethereal beauty and extraordinarily talented, but it is her voice of reason and her resilience that are her true strengths. William de la Cuesta is devastating in form and stature, but his beauty comes in second to his righteousness as a character who will stop at nothing to right the wrongs of the past, while making moves strategically in a land that hardly accepts him.

While reading and waiting for the explosive love story to unfold, I was enriched with the wisdom of generations before me fighting for many of the same things we fight for today. Waiting for the work day to end so that I could get in a few precious hours of unwrapping this incredibly woven story, was possibly one of my greatest works of patience that I have performed to date.

Mary Sheeran has taken the genre of Historical Romance and created something timeless, while also extending a narrative that reaches far more than the tender places of the heart. A Dangerous Liberty is completely engaging, and it entirely encompasses its readers in thought. Pages filled with incredible longing for everything that is just beyond grasp, this novel keeps you running along Elisabeth in the Sierra’s, clinging to hope and the promise of changes yet to come.

Do not pass up the chance to experience this novel. It has all the elements of mystery, romance, intrigue, and historical significance that one could hope for, and it does not leave you wanting. An enamoring read from start to finish, A Dangerous Liberty is not a novel to be taken for granted, and it is certainly not one that will be forgotten.

Then tragedy strikes and sends Silas home, and the entire town is thrown into chaos when they learn what brought him back—he’s inherited ownership of the town and the newly discovered oil reserves under it!

Flying into Deep River, Alaska, took a special kind of grit. The airstrip was a narrow bit of gravel to the side of soaring mountains, with a river running along one edge, and there was always some kind of crosswind happening that would challenge even the most experienced pilot.
It wasn’t a forgiving landing, and there was no room for error.

Luckily, Silas Quinn hadn’t made an error in all the time he’d spent flying around the wilds of the Alaskan backcountry, and he wasn’t about to make one now.

Particularly not when he was flying into the hometown he’d left thirteen years earlier and hadn’t been back to since.

Especially not when he was coming back to what would probably turn out to be the most hostile reception since Mike Flint had once said at a town meeting that he thought the idea of a luxury motel on the side of the Deep River would be good and why didn’t they build one.

Considering the reason Si was here was fifty million times worse than the idea of a luxury motel, the response he was likely to get once he’d broken the news would probably be more than the one month of cold-shouldering that Mike had gotten.

Si would be lucky if the town didn’t kill him.

That was if this damn airstrip didn’t kill him first.

The clouds were lowering, and the rain was coming down hard, and the wind was a problem, but with his friend Caleb’s death still fresh, Si was in no mood to let the elements have their way with him.

He’d survived three tours in Afghanistan.

He’d survive this, even if it killed him.

He kept his nerve and brought the tiny plane down, the wheels bouncing on the gravel as he rolled up just shy of the lone hangar that housed Deep River’s entire aviation industry.
As the spin of the Cessna’s propellers began to wind down, Si sat in the cockpit trying to handle the rush of emotions that he had known would grip him the second he touched down. The usual mixture of grief, anger, and longing that Deep River always instilled whenever he thought of his hometown.

There was a special poignancy to it today though. Because Caleb was only a few weeks dead and the shock of the will was still ringing through Si’s entire being like a hammer strike.

Deep River was an anomaly. The entire town was privately owned and had been since the gold rush days, when town founder Jacob West had bought up all the land around the Deep River and declared it a haven for the misfits and rogues who didn’t fit in anywhere in normal society. He’d leased out the land to anyone who wanted to join him, getting them to pay him whatever they could afford in terms of a nominal rent, and in return, they could have a plot of land to call their own and do whatever they wanted with it.

The People’s Republic of Deep River, some called it.

Most just called it home.

Even over a hundred years later, the town was still owned by the Wests.

And that was the difficulty. Caleb was the oldest West and had inherited the town after his father, Jared West, had died five years earlier. And he’d ran the place since then—or at least he had until his unexpected death in a plane crash while running supplies up to a remote settlement in the north.

But that hadn’t been the end to the shocks that Si and his two other friends, Damon and Zeke, had had to endure in the past few weeks.

First, there had been finding out that Caleb had left the entire town to them in his will. And second, oil had been discovered within Deep River’s city limits—oil that the town had no idea was underneath their land.

Oil that, once they knew about it, was going to turn the entire place upside down.

Heavy stuff for three ex-military guys who had nothing to their names but a small company doing adventure tours for tourists, transport runs for hunters, and supply runs for everyone else in the Alaskan bush.

Si stared out at the rain beyond the windshield of the plane.

It hid everything from view, which was probably just as well. He hadn’t wanted to come back here, not considering what he’d been trying to leave behind, but it hadn’t made any sense for either Damon or Zeke to be the advance party.

This was his hometown. He was the one who knew Deep River and the people in it. And he was the one who’d been closest to Caleb.

Therefore, it made sense for him to be the one to break the happy news that firstly, the fact that he, Damon, and Zeke were the new owners. And secondly, there was oil in them thar hills.
Some men might have kept the oil a secret and kept all the riches for themselves too, but Si wasn’t that kind of man, and neither were his friends.

He’d been brought up in Deep River, an extreme environment where everyone learned to rely on each other since that could be all that stood between you and a very uncomfortable death. There was no time for petty grievances—though to be fair, there were a lot of those as well. But when push came to shove, the town pulled together. Because fundamentally, they were all the same. They’d all come here because they didn’t fit anywhere else, because they were escaping something, because they liked the quiet and the isolation and the return to nature.

Because they just plain old liked it.

Si let out a breath.

And now he was going to give them news that was going to blow it all apart.

This book regularly introduced new human characters as Bonfyre was bought and sold over and over again. I loved getting to know all of the women who knew this car no matter how short or long their times together happened to be. Each one of them was coming from a unique set of circumstances that influenced how they reacted to this car. I won’t mention any specific names, but I should note that some of their backstories included sensitive material such as domestic violence and stalking for any readers who prefer not to be surprised by these subjects.

It would have been nice to have more character development. While the various women who owned Bonfyre did make changes in their lives, there wasn’t as much time devoted to exploring why these changes happened as I would have liked to see. Given the wide variety of problems they dealt with, this was surprising. There was so much space here to show how ordinary people can transform their lives in marvellous ways, but it wasn’t explored very deeply at all.

Some of the best scenes involved acts of true human kindness. Whether the characters involved in it had been friends for years or had met five minutes beforehand, it was heartwarming to see just how far they’d go to help someone who desperately needed it without any expectation of reciprocation or reward. That’s something I could read about all day and never grow tired of. It’s so wholesome.

The other thing I would have liked to see developed more fully were the conflicts in this tale. As mentioned earlier, these characters dealt with pretty serious issues in many cases. It came as a surprise to me see how quickly and easily their problems were solved. While it happened more than once, this was especially true when it came to the domestic violence subplot. As much as I wish we all lived in a world where abuse could be permanently resolved this fast, knowing that this generally isn’t the case pulled me out of the storyline because of how unrealistic it is for most victims.

I enjoyed the fact that the paranormal elements were allowed to simply exist without the need to dig into how they worked or why they attached themselves to a convertible. Bonfyre was an incredibly special vehicle that brought good things into the lives of everyone who owned it. Sometimes readers really only need a basic understanding of why impossible things are happening, and this was one of them.

Bonfyre should be read by anyone who loves seeing storylines tied up neatly and happily.

Nathan isn’t deterred by the Kincaid pack. He’s in the UK for a very specific reason, a reason that threatens to turn the lives of the Kincaids upside down – and possibly endanger them.

The Kincaid family needs each other now more than ever.

The Change is an intriguing story filled with lots of diverse characters. At first, the number of characters seems overwhelming. However, Ms. Leigh has done an excellent job of defining each character. I had no problems keeping them straight in my mind as I read.

The Kincaids are certainly a dysfunctional family with a multitude of issues, but it is clear they truly care about each other. Each of the brothers are very different, and I’m not sure I have a clear favorite at this point. Alistair is oldest. He’s the alpha always trying to do what is best for his family, but the responsibility is heavy on his shoulders. Jacob is a tough nut to crack. He’s the strongest physically, but he’s more than muscle. Derek seems to be the peacemaker of the family. He tries to smooth rough edges of his brothers, especially the constant friction between Jacob and Zane. Zane, the youngest, is still trying to prove himself as an essential part of the family, but also mark himself as different. Will the Kincaids let their differences tear them apart, or will they use their specific talents to emerge as a stronger pack?

This story opens right at the beginning of a serious family crisis. I could feel Alistair’s urgency as he calls the family home, and the pacing never lets up. The tension continues to build with each page turn! Ms. Leigh also manages to fill in some pertinent background information without slowing the pace down a bit.

I must also say I liked Ms. Leigh’s portrayal of shapeshifters. Some stories have a tendency to either romanticize the life of a shapeshifter or show it as something horrible and violent. Ms. Leigh has found the balance between the two extremes. She highlights both the beauty and the brutality of the life they live.

The conclusion is very satisfying, but definitely left me wanting to know more. I have a feeling that though the immediate crisis has passed, things are going to be rough for the Kincaid family for a while. I can’t wait to read the next installment of this series!

Twilight was ending as night beat day and engulfed the barren landscape. They gingerly entered the water.

‘It’s stinging my legs, Saxon. What’s that smell?’

‘Sulphur. Under no circumstances should we dive, splash, or put our faces into the water,’ Saxon instructed. ‘Unusual tactile sensation; it’s sort of thick and soupy. What’s your pain threshold on?’

‘I’m on three,’ Kris said.

‘Me too,’ Wendy confirmed. ‘I shouldn’t have shaved my legs this morning.’

‘Don’t go in too far, you might have trouble putting your feet back down on the bottom.’

The three of them lolled in the dense Dead Sea water, looking up at the burgeoning night sky. Small foam bean pillows supported their heads.

‘So, besides the floating sensation, stinging cuts, and the danger of swallowing this muck, what are we doing here, Saxon?’

‘Relax, Kris, enjoy the experience for a moment, we have time. Notice there are very few sounds here.’ Saxon heard someone entering the water behind him, but didn’t look back.

‘Hello, Saxon.’

He instantly recognised her voice. ‘Evening, Lena,’ he smiled.

‘Hi, Lena,’ Wendy chimed in.

‘Lovely night for a dip.’ Lena waded into the water beside Saxon and reclined.

‘Look up there,’ Kris pointed at a faint glow in the eastern quadrant of the night sky. ‘Meteoroid?’ The radiance grew in intensity, then an abrupt flash exploded into flares rippling out like fireworks.

‘Exploding meteoroid,’ Wendy agreed, watching tens of thousands of shooting stars pepper the heavens. ‘Spectacular!’

‘Wow, it’s beautiful,’ Lena whispered, as the sound wave touched them with a faint crack.

‘About 13,000 years ago, just north of this region,’ Saxon explained, ‘early nomadic tribes, hunter gatherers, began staying put in the one place. They collected plants, animal meat and skins, and settled down around their larder to became hunter collectors.’

‘So, we’re going to have meteorites rain down on us?’ Wendy asked.

Salbatora Tames has one true love, her avocado farm. Her family constantly nudges her to be more social, but Sal much prefers the dirt, the sun, and the solitude. Besides, trees listen better than people do.

Together, they embark on a road trip across the jungle, where they form a tighter bond. However, as obstacles arise, their new-found troubles may lead to more woes than bliss.

This could be a summer full of changes.

Salbatora and Dacre’s character development were both handled wonderfully. It isn’t easy to pull this off when working with two narrators, so I commend the authors for putting so much work into making both of these characters well-rounded and interesting folks. It made me eager to get to know both protagonists better and see if they received the happy endings I thought they deserved.

While I initially understood Dacre’s strong reluctance to talk about his Type 1 Diabetes, there did come a time about halfway through the book when this personality trait of his strained credibility. I’m saying this as someone who has a different medical condition that can become life threatening if not handled correctly. Yes, it made total sense for Dacre to feel embarrassed and annoyed by the way certain folks babied him after learning about his condition. That is always irritating. At the same time, there are certain medical conditions that really need to be disclosed for safety reasons so that others will know what warning signs to look out for in an emergency and when they should call for help. There were so many other things I loved about this story, but I sure struggled to understand why that main character hadn’t learned to communicate the basics about his condition to new people yet.

The road trip was filled with adventure. I never would have guessed that delivering a shipment of avocados could be so dangerous, especially since this was set in modern times and the characters had cell phones and a vehicle. It was a great deal of fun to see just how much trouble two teens could get into despite these advantages.

Avocado Bliss was an exciting read that I’d recommend to anyone who has ever wished they could be like other people.

An unconventional woman and a man shrouded in mystery walk a tightrope of desire as they race against a killer to find a top secret invention in this New York Times bestselling novel from Amanda Quick.

Former trapeze artist Amalie Vaughn moved to Burning Cove to reinvent herself, but things are not going well. After spending her entire inheritance on a mansion with the intention of turning it into a bed-and-breakfast, she learns too late that the villa is said to be cursed. When the first guest, Dr. Norman Pickwell, is murdered by his robot invention during a sold-out demonstration, rumors circulate that the curse is real.

In the chaotic aftermath of the spectacle, Amalie watches as a stranger from the audience disappears behind the curtain. When Matthias Jones reappears, he is slipping a gun into a concealed holster. It looks like the gossip that is swirling around him is true—Matthias evidently does have connections to the criminal underworld.

This was a refreshing read. It’s classic Amanda Quick – a strong heroine, Gothic-like hero, a mystery to solve and hints of otherness to make a reader wonder if it’s coincidence or supernatural senses. This novel may feel comforting for fans of the author, because if a reader is looking forward to the elements that make reading an Amanda Quick suspense mystery fun and entertaining, they’re all there to enjoy.

This is the first historical novel I’ve read by the author that takes place in a time period other than Regency. It’s more like the early thirties because the Crash is mentioned; I guess that qualifies as early 20th Century. The Jones family is going strong and getting into just as much trouble as their ancestors used to. Again, the novel has that feeling of continuity because the Jones’s family talents still make it hard to find that perfect woman who can complete them, who won’t run away screaming or having a hissy fit because they don’t fit into a clear societal mold. The heroine, Amalie, is wonderfully perfect for the hero, Matthias, because she’s a bit different too. Not so much in the ‘other’ factor, but because of her career. I don’t believe I have ever read a story where the love interest is a trapeze artist. I was fascinated.

I was delightfully puzzled as to who the bad guy could be. There were layers of motive and possibilities to choose from and it’s safe to share that all my guesses were wrong. How fun!

I would have rated my review higher if there were any surprising, jaw-dropping, Oh-my-gosh Wow moments, but alas, I didn’t find any stunners. I’m still a happy reader because the book provided just what I needed; what I was looking forward to and hoped the author delivered. She did. I needed pure escapism and Ms. Quick took me on a grand adventure.

This novel is enjoyable, entertaining, and has the requisite happy ending with a delightful mystery solved in efficient fashion. I enjoyed the romance between Amalie and Matthias and its culmination. Tightrope is well worth reading.
