In these 16 flash fiction vignettes, Cupid’s arrow hits the mark and ignites a spark between two strangers—whether or not they’re looking for romance. Their unusual meetings lead to new beginnings and new chances at love.

Sweet stories of couples falling under Cupid’s spell include:
* a Medieval knight courting a pretty lady
* two neighbors discover that romance can happen when you least expect it
* a dehydrated mermaid rescued by a handsome stranger

These lighthearted mini-romances are perfect reads for a quick lunchtime escape or an after-work indulgence.

For a group of charming, bite-sized stories of couple looking for and finding new romance, Cupid’s Schemes offers a variety of satisfying settings and situations. These are tales of quickly-found love or attraction, often over a single, remarkable conversation.

Fast-paced, the little stories may have no room for any real development, but they are complete and satisfying. One always feels good at the end of each story. Most of the men are muscular and tan, and the women are young and pretty.

Most of the couples move very fast—lots of kissing the day they meet. For example, in Skating Sweethearts, readers are treated to a light-hearted new romance. The kiss came within minutes though. In this cute story, the hero helps a lady face a fear.

Some of the stories help bring friends together in a romance. Food often brings people together, which is very realistic.

In one of the stories, again, we have a very fast-moving man, but this story has the added charm of making a woman’s vocational dreams come true.

Catch of the Day has some humor in it. Like the other tales, this one has a couple that is likeable. It has things in common with the others so far, such as a cute guy with muscles asking the lady out.

A few stories stand out for being a little less fast-moving. The couple gets to know each other over a few days first before doing more. All of these stories have implications at the end.

We have a charming story about trust and reminders not to judge, and in Renaissance Romance, like in the others, the setting is well described, the world created vividly. The writer’s attention to detail is lovely.

A Beau for Katie is also delightful and has the added bonus of involving cats. This narrative has one of the most realistic time frames of the group. The friendly couple meets because of their cats, and the man and woman want to talk to get to know each other.

There are more anecdotes with lovely scenery. Some of the conversations are charming and normal, and some are a bit on the corny side, but all of the couples readers are likely to cheer on. For something quick that will surely lift your mood, why not have a look at Cupid’s Schemes?

Avery is resigned to solitude. She can’t shift, she’s overweight, and her ex cheated on her, but when Alpha Fletcher and his best friend, Mitch, return to Boulder Pack after years of traveling, she’s shocked at how much she wants them.

Avery makes their beasts howl with need, but can she accept two wolves instead of one? Triad mates haven’t been allowed in ages.

Mitch is happy to bond with Avery and Fletcher—he has room in his heart for two mates. What he isn’t happy with is Avery’s father threatening her, and making her doubt her worth. Avery is a Queen, but she has no idea what that means. Will instinct be enough to push them together, or will Mitch and Fletcher need more drastic measures to convince Avery that she’s their destiny?

First off: Fated mates are myth. Secondly: Avery Tate is NOT an alpha. She can’t even get her wolf to behave. Third and most important: She has NOT been pining away for best friends Mitch and Fletcher to return from their walkabout. And Lastly: the Earth is flat. Yeah, all of these statements are flat out lies.

Avery Tate is a little bit stubborn. Actually, she’s a lot stubborn but her world is about to get turned upside down and being stubborn isn’t going to work much longer. The world changers go by the names of Mitch and Fletch and they have some very specific plans in mind just as soon as they get a few minutes alone with Avery. I’ll just say, it was explosive and so much fun!!

The author does a fantastic job of building the tension before the characters even meet up face to face. It’s not that they don’t know each other, they grew up in the same pack, but they haven’t seen each other in quite a few years. Time and maturity changes people. I loved how the author quickly dispels the ‘fated mates are a myth’ theory by simply having them recognize each others scents on the wind. So the natural thing to do after meeting ones mythical fated mates is of course to run. Avery didn’t make it easy on these boys.

It’s a good story. Fated mate stories have been done but this one still felt fresh. Mitch and Fletcher are the right amount of hot and sexy without being over the top. Avery’s been left to her own devices in the pack for nine years and these wolves are just what she needs after dating so many dogs. The latest being the worst.

The book is just about the triad getting together. There’s plenty of excitement outside the bedroom and a plethora of baddies conspiring to keep them apart. I stayed glued to the pages to see how it all worked out. I was excited to see that this was the first in a new series and can’t wait to return to the Boulder Pack to see if Paige meets her match (or matches) in the next book.

Once, there was a truce. Desperaux controlled the west with magic, and Desire claimed the east with steel and science.

But now magic has disappeared, and the world has changed.

The kingdom of Desire will stop at nothing to maintain the new world order. On Juno’s wedding day, their Mengery soldiers came marching through the Nine desert to rip his world apart. Now he journeys east with his adopted brother, Trey, in search of revenge after the murder of his family. Along the way, the two face bandits and the magical creatures of the Nine. When they finally reach Desire, Juno and Trey will face something even deadlier – their own fears and ambitions.

This is a tale of brotherhood, a revenge story that will remind you that everything has a cost – a cost that will be paid to Desire and to the inner demons that govern us all.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Trey and Juno had found a shack to rest for a few hours, but when they woke Juno realized what a grave mistake they’d made. The shack was a cursed place, he said. Trey scoffed, but Juno had been learning from a monk in Nox and said he could smell it in the air – like sour milk. Fear gripped his shoulders, turning him into a statue. Unable to act. Paralyzed. Like he had been on his wedding day, Trey thought. Perhaps Drea would still be alive if he had done something. The frustration drew bile in Trey’s throat.

Though Trey didn’t believe in curses, he knew something was off about the town. Desperate for sleep, he hadn’t noticed it when he snuck into the shack. Now, though, he saw the abandoned saloon with its worm-eaten wood. They were all alone. Stepping outside the shack, the two watched as the sun rose and drew close to them. Dzoavits stood several yards from the door of the shack. The demon’s muscular body reflected sunlight, and when he brought his hands above his head, his triceps bulged to the size of watermelons. When the sun drew close enough to Dzoavits’s hands that he could seize it, the demon swallowed it whole. With that, the Nine was plunged into darkness and a chill running through Juno’s back compelled him to retreat to the shack and abandon Trey. From the uncovered roof of the shack, Juno watched Rangda approach Trey and extend a tongue that was over a foot long. Trey tried drawing his laser pistol out to shoot it off, but Andhaka jumped down from the shack and grabbed him, holding him still.

Everyone has an origin story, even Father Christmas.

The world building in this story was fantastic. I felt like I’d stepped into an entirely new and exciting universe when I began reading it, and that feeling stayed with me until the last word of the final scene. Mr. Vess described the setting in such vivid detail that it was like I’d really gone to visit Father Christmas when he was a young man who didn’t yet have any special powers.

There was a character early on in this tale who happened not to look or behave anything like all of the other members of their race. These differences in them made a crucial difference in how the plot unfolded, so I was surprised by the fact that the narrator never explained why this person had been so unusual from birth. It was something that grabbed my attention from the first time I learned about it, and I would have chosen a perfect rating if this part of the storyline had been explained better.

The main character was such a brave and kind man. He took chances that many people would shy away from due to how inherently risky they were, and he always did this for reasons that had nothing to do with the thrill of trying something dangerous. I really enjoyed getting to know him so well. He made me wish this was something full-length so I could spend more time seeing how he interacted with everyone he met.

I’d recommend Father Christmas: A Wonder Tale of the North to anyone who has ever wondered what the jolly man who lives at the North Pole was like in his youth.

It’s never easy being the new kid in town.

Josh’s traumatic reaction to the violent deaths of his relatives shortly before the events of this book began was well-written. He had obviously been left with some pretty serious emotional damage from those experiences. As sad as it made me to see him relive certain moments from his past over and over again, I was also pleased with how much research the author seemed to have done on how experiences like this can haunt someone. Based on my knowledge of this subject, she wrote an accurate portrayal of how someone would be expected to react to such a terrible and life-changing experience over the longterm.

There were pacing issues. The narrator spent a great deal of time introducing himself and the audience to his new home and community. As interesting as it was to see a detailed description of how Josh adapted to living in an unfamiliar place, this left the rest of the storyline with less room than it should have had to show what happened to this character after he met a potential friend and began settling into a routine. I found it hard to remain interested in the plot at certain points because of this.

The plot twists in this tale were well done. Ms. Rucker Haynes really knew how to throw her audience for a loop before revealing her actual intentions for her characters. I enjoyed all of the surprises she had in store for me as I read. This wasn’t the first thing I’ve read from her, but it was my favorite tale from her so far because of how much effort she put into keeping her audience on our toes.

I’d recommend The Haunting of Josh Weston to readers who enjoy fiction about the paranormal, mental health concerns, or, even better, both of these topics.

Rusty Baker is a rich, entitled, oblivious jock, and he might have stayed that way if he hadn’t become friends with out-and-proud Oliver Campbell from the wrong side of the tracks. When Oliver kisses him goodbye before Rusty leaves for college, Rusty is forced to rethink everything he knows about himself.

But nothing can help Rusty survive a semester at Stanford, and he returns home for Thanksgiving break clinging to the one thing he knows to be true: Oliver is the best thing that’s ever happened to him.

Rusty’s parents disagree, and Rusty finds himself homeless for the holidays. But with Oliver’s love and the help of Oliver’s amazing family, Rusty realizes that failing college doesn’t mean he can’t pass real life with flying rainbow colors.

Rusty wasn’t stupid, but he often was a little slow on the uptake. A sweet, gentle young man he’s surprised when most of his jock friends – class-mates he’s been with for most of his school life – are mean and homophobic for no reason to the new guy, Oliver. Rusty is friends with Oliver, and over the course of the year they form a firm, solid friendship. The night before Rusty is going to move for college, Oliver finally screws up his courage and kisses Rusty – and it’s like a light bulb pops off in his head. Rusty takes a while to understand himself, but when he finally does – and comes out to his parents – his world is turned upside down.

I have to be honest, I loved Rusty’s character. Sweet, honest and utterly adorable, Rusty was a genuine guy who was just trying to sort himself out. I thoroughly enjoyed reading most of the story through his third-person perspective and I really liked how he viewed the world and everything in it. He struggled so hard to live up to the expectations of his parents, and even initially those of his friends as well. I also really appreciated how Oliver didn’t try to change Rusty, or force him to make discoveries or decisions before he could assess and understand them at Rusty’s own pace. I thought Oliver was patient, funny and kind – a true friend and, eventually, a wonderful lover and partner.

I enjoyed laughing aloud at a few of the antics Rusty’s new college room-mate got up to while Rusty was at college, but I really appreciated how even separated from Oliver, Rusty continued to value and need Oliver’s friendship and support. It made it clear to me that both Oliver and Rusty were genuinely attached to each other – whether as friends or more – that is wasn’t simply a matter of circumstances and them being geographically close to each other in school and town. Their friendship and emotions ran deeper than that and I loved watching them stand the test of time.

A slow-paced coming of age style of story, I really loved this full length novel. Rusty and Oliver are interesting, layered characters who really blossom as they come together. There’s a strong and large cast of important secondary characters – Rusty’s college room-mate, parents and sister as well as Oliver’s large and boisterous family. I loved how everyone interacted all together and really helped sell the realism and interesting plots throughout the story. But the whole time Rusty, his self-discovery and his long-standing friendship with Oliver was always front and center. The sex is steamy and hot – but I didn’t find it over the top. The sex really added an extra layer to the story, not detracting from the friendship or plot aspects of the story.

Well written and very heartwarming, I really enjoyed this story and will happily read more by this author.

I really kind of loved this story. It hit all the right notes for me from character personality, story development and fun dialogue. Even the antagonist was believable and all around self-serving and mean. I enjoyed not liking him.

Nathan and Flynn have a bit of background that I found interesting. The author alludes to it multiple times throughout the story but doesn’t fully reveal the depth of their connection until the end.

There are some great secondary characters in this story as well. Nathan’s mom is a sweetie. I had to laugh at the ‘small town’ feel of the island community where everyone knew everyone and was always asking about Ms. Moffat. I had an on/off love/hate relationship with Nate’s best friend. His actions don’t always feel like their in Nate’s best interest but that made more sense when the story played out as well.

I wouldn’t mind returning to Ceremony to catch up and watch another couple find their forever. Good read!

Why I write about Vampires…The only genre there is (at least in my mind)

Since I was a young girl, I can remember sitting upon my bed, in the darkness of night (when I should’ve been well asleep already) and dreaming of what it would be like to walk through the night with no fears, to see into the abyss of blackness and to embrace all that it would have to offer. The life of a nightwalker…yeah, that’s what I dreamt of as a little girl, not cooking in Easy-Bake ovens, riding horses, or playing house with Ken and Barbie dolls.

My dream world was that of the darkest nocturnal creatures known to man. Hence the obsession was born. One of the earliest vampire movies I can recall watching, completely enthralled was Dracula in 1979, starring Frank Langella.

In the early twentieth century, when moving pictures were still in its infancy, the Nosferatu was the first born of many dark princes of the night. Hundreds, maybe thousands of reincarnations of the creature would be born over the decades, well into the twenty-first century.

From those first black and white stuttering film slides of grotesque creatures with pale, bluish skin, bald head and elongated teeth, dripping with red food coloring, avoiding sun light at all cost to the more recent invention of sparkling day walking vampires of the Pacific Northwest, I’ve devoured all of them. The sci-fi space alien vampires to the African American versions, and let us not forget the Bon Temps of New Orleans vampires of Tru Blood HBO fame, good ol’ Vampire Bill, all these have fed my obsession, my research, my passion in creating my own world of blood thirsty vampires.

Most early movies and even series portrayed my beloved vampires as evil doers, of predators who preyed on the weak, the small, and elderly. The public view was contoured to seeing them as pest, as devils, as the darkest of evil in a human’s soul. However, somehow, I was shielded against such perception, viewing these night creatures as always human, who sometime made bad decisions, wrong choices and even deserved to find and be loved. They tried their best to be who they were in their hearts but who just happened to need one little element to remain alive, their addiction needed feeding, blood. Well, my folks have always found ways to co-exists with their mortal cousins, who have for obvious reason a much shorter life span than their unique relatives. We’re all human, regardless of our life’s length. We all make bad choices. There’s always the preverbal rotten apple in the barrel to make the rest look bad, yet we all want to get along.

In the end…we’re all human at some point in our lives. Some of us just have a really cool mutation, we’re the special ones. And we’re in every aspect of life, living right next door, leading our lives, working our jobs and paying taxes just like Joe Smith across the street.

Yes, this is the world I see, where we all get along, mortal and immortal. This is the world I’ve created from my obsession, my passion, my love of the immortal beings that were first born well over centuries ago.

An image of Dawn’s mangled, bloody body filled my thoughts, and I stopped sorting through my art supplies. It had happened just before Christmas. There was poor Dawn, distraught over her break-up with Ian, wearing my jack, and waiting in Geoffrey’s car in the alley behind The Stage.

They thought Dawn was me.

They- The Inner Circle, Geoffrey’s first coven-wanted him back.

Marco, his sire, was the head honcho there, and I its prime the coven had been quite large with a very strong presence in the community. As the years passed, it prominence had faded, but Marco still clung to his power. Geoffrey said that the older Marco got the more manipulative, abusive, and obsessive he became. It didn’t make sense. Marco had exiled him, and now he wanted his prized son back, even though Geoffrey’s twin, Alexander, was part of the Inner Circle. To top it off, they wanted me dead. Why? Because I came between Marco and Geoffrey? Was it because of the Link?

Shh, my love, said Geoffrey’s sweet, cool voice though the Link.

But I couldn’t keep my thoughts from whirling. Nerdy Chase Montgomery, my neighbor, was Geoffrey’s Guardian- a scholar of immortals, more or less. He was assigned to watch over Geoffrey, but he had trouble staying close to him. So he had followed me instead, filling my apartment with micro-cameras and audio pickups. When Geoffrey finally confronted Chase, I got a look inside his apartment-and at his computer screens. Nearly every inch of my apartment was under surveillance.

How fast everything had happened! Only four months ago, I started working at Ashleigh’s bar, The Stage, which was now the hottest club in Seattle. Geoffrey and his family which made up his band, The Darkness, were the house band there, and he and his family lived what they jokingly called an “alternative lifestyle”- even for vampires. Believing our human lives were too short as it is, they found other sources for their drug of choice, blood.

By the way, did I say reality bites? Yeah it does. I guess that comes with the territory when the one you love is a vampire.

About the Author: Catherine Russell was born in Tacoma, Washington and raised in a small town just south, South Hill, Puyallup. At the time South Hill was a heavily wooded area and far off the beaten path. Growing up she had the forests as her fantasy world along with the wild animals. She lived with her parents and an older sister. There are a few similarities from her own childhood that have carried over in to her first novel, “The Stage”. As a child, she did have a small dog named Toto, whom she would quite frequently roam the woods with. Her childhood home still stands, and is still nestled in the woods even though South Hill has undergone an extreme makeover since she lived there. She enjoyed hours of day dreaming and playing in the woods, which in turn fed her fantasy world of make believe.

Top Ten Tuesday: Winter Solstice Reads

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

The Winter Solstice is the holiday I observe at this time of the year. I believe there’s something to be said for acknowledging the changing of the seasons and celebrating when the days finally begin to grow a little longer again in December.

From a purely scientific point of view, there’s something fascinating to me about how much the weather shifts from one season to the next. Studying science is a hobby of mine, and I love absorbing as much information as I can about everything from astronomy to zoology.

I also enjoy learning about how various cultures explained and prepared for the changing of the seasons back before humans understood why the western hemisphere has so many more hours of daylight in the summer than we do in the winter. Some of the titles on this list will reflect that curiosity.

Since I’m still hunting down copies of some of these books, I won’t say anything specific about them today. I am really looking forward to reading all of them, though! This is one of those topics that can be approached from so many perspectives that I could read about it for ages and still find new takes on it.

Sasha was a delightful mishmash of personality traits that sometimes contradicted each other. She was clever and kind in some scenes while being oblivious and honestly a bit selfish in others. I appreciated the fact that she was written in such a well-rounded way. She felt like a genuine person to me, flaws and all. Even when she made decisions that I strongly disagreed with, I still liked her quite a bit as a character. To me, this is a sign of good writing.

It would have been helpful to have a better explanation of why the antagonists were behaving the way that they did. This tale was full of adventure beginning in the very first sentence. While I can’t say exactly what happened in that sentence, I will say that it involved the elves getting up to no good in the middle of the night when no one expected them to be sneaking around. As exciting as that scene was, I somehow became even more excited to read everything that followed it. The authors did a wonderful job of keeping the audience on our toes as Sasha attempted to save her brother.

The Trains that Climb the Winter Tree was a creative story that should be read by anyone who is in the market for something about the darker side of Christmas.
