Ryker: I first laid eyes on her ten years ago, naked, bloody, and thrown away in a black garbage bag. The moment she gripped my leg and didn’t let go, I knew. I’d kill three men for this woman, even my own fucking brother. No guilt. No remorse. Sky is mine. And letting her go was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Sky: Ryker tore my heart right in the middle years ago when I told him I loved him. For years, we’ve kept our distance but he’s the first man I call when I’m knee deep in trouble. Ryker’s killed for me and he’ll do it again. He’s feared by his enemies, respected by the other members of the Severin Familia. To me, he’s always been one thing. My man.

Ryker worked hard for the Severin Familia and protected his little brother, River, as best he could. But when River goes off the deep end Ryker knows there’s no going back. Taking care of Skylar was a double edged sword. To Ryker she was an angel, innocent and pure and it was instinctive in him to protect her. Yet Ryker didn’t want to bring Skylar into his dark and dangerous world. While Sky tries hard to set her life on a different course, she eventually has to admit that Ryker is the only man for her. Can she convince him to stake his claim on her?

I found this to be an intresting and character-driven sexy story. I was pleased the author took some time to introduce both Ryker and Skylar’s characters as this gave me time as a reader to get invested in them. This also helped me not feel like they were rushed together into their sexual relationship and skimp on the plot. Once Skylar returns to the city – all of Ryker’s patience is at an end and their relationship progresses pretty quickly. I did like, though, how the rest of the familia didn’t fade too far into the background.

While a quick and short read, I felt the characters here really shone. Interesting and complicated Ryker and Skylar in particular didn’t feel like cookie cut-outs. For my tastes, I feel there could have been a bit more descriptiveness in the sex scenes, but overall I thought this was a well balanced story with sex, interesting characters and a good level of plot. I’d happily read more by this author.

Favorite Things about Winter by JS Harker – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes JS Harker who is celebrating the upcoming release of her newest book Tit for Tat by sharing with us her favorite things about winter.

*****

I am one of those few, few people (or so it seems) who adores a cold winter season. Living in the Midwest, we can see quite a range in temp and length of winter. Seemed like every time I sat down to work on Tit For Tat more snow would pour out of the skies. Flynn, a Winter fairy, would agree with me that winter’s the best time of year (and I liked blaming him for our extra snow this last year!) So, I figured, as much as winter gets a bad reputation, I’d share my favorite five things about this time of year.

5. Having an excuse to watch Muppet Christmas Carol. Technically this is only good up until Dec. 25th, but this remains my favorite Muppet movie. I’ve adapted the line “After all there’s only one more sleep ‘til Christmas” to just about anything I get excited for.

4. Sledding. The freefall down a side of a hill is just sheer fun for the few seconds it takes to reach the bottom. My grandparents had this awesome hill in their backyard. Hills, really. There was one side with the bigger drop and then one set that if done right meant three dips.

3. Long, snowy days. There’s something peaceful in the constant motion of fluffy snowflakes tumbling from the sky from morning until night. The outside world seems a little quieter for it.

2. Peppermint flavored/scented everything. I’m not sure when peppermint became synonymous with the Christmas season, but I love the sudden uptick. From extra candle scents to hand creams to coffees, peppermint is just everywhere. Hold on, I’ve got to go find a candy cane. 😉

1. The cold. I like the way cold feels on my face. It’s sharp and unyielding. Layering on clothes combats it, but sometimes the wind shoves its way in. And let’s face it, warming up with coffee or other hot drinks is really amazing only after we get cold enough to appreciate it.

College sophomore Derek is busy working over his holiday break—but his shifts at the toy store are no hardship if they mean more opportunity to dream about the sexy new guy working as an elf in Santa’s Workshop. When his mother gifts him a bag of cookies, Derek regifts them to Flynn as an excuse to get to know him. Flynn has presents to offer as well, and soon they’re dating, with Derek finding out his comfort zone is bigger than he imagined.

But Flynn is hiding a secret—he’s really a winter fairy whose magic is bound to the season. He can’t stay in the mortal realm, and Derek doesn’t want to lose contact with his family. Can they find a way to hold on to each other when the snow and sugar plums melt away?

About the Author:
JS Harker loves stories. She was one of those kids who always had a book in her hands and spent many hours adventuring with her siblings. These days she wanders into her imaginary worlds and conjures up tales of magic, passion, and happily-ever-afters. She currently lives in the part of the Midwest that makes Tatooine look interesting by comparison (not that she’s ever obsessively thought about becoming a Jedi or anything).

When not writing or reading, she catches up on far too much television and spends time running around in video games.

How to Leave Your Readers Sweaty, Breathless, and Gasping “Oh, Baby!”
In romance writing, we love our oohs and ahs. But it turns out that love scenes are quite tricky, and much harder to craft than one might expect. There’s no right way to do it, no how-to manual. Some writers prefer to simply fade to black; others favor a lot of description. It’s a highly personal decision. (Full disclosure: I fall somewhere in the middle. I love a sexy description, so long as it’s done artfully and with purpose.)

Still, certain things hold true regardless of your particular preferences, and it’s important to keep them in mind. After all, a badly crafted scene involving a bank robbery may be boring to a reader, but a badly crafted love scene can be just plain hilarious. And that’s not usually the goal.

The good news is that as human beings, we’re biologically programmed to be interested in sex. Sex of any kind, really. Cows, horses, grasshoppers – if a creature is doing it, we’re inclined to at least give it a glance. So you can expect the cat ears of your readers will naturally swing forward at the first gasp of desire. As such, love scenes are powerful tools in your arsenal of storytelling. Use them responsibly! When you have a tiger by the tail, there’s a lot that can go wrong. Here are a few things to keep it from turning on you:

1. Context. Context. Context.
The measure of a great love scene is that it could only be written for those two specific characters in that particular moment in time. I can’t stress this enough. Sex is not an exchange of sweat; it’s an exchange of emotion. (And there’s a wide range of emotion available to you; don’t limit yourself to just love or lust.) What happens in a sex scene is far less important than why it happens or how your characters feel about it. Too much description with too little emotional context and you have wandered into “hokey pokey” territory. Readers deserve far more than just being told where the right arm presently is.

2. Words matter.
 Power words like “lick” go a long way towards painting a vivid mental picture, and the human brain is more than willing to fill in the rest. Too much detail can be unnecessary and distracting. If you find yourself describing slurping or slapping, you’ve likely gone too far.

 Resist verbal contortionism. I cringe when I read scenes where an author has gone to extreme measures to avoid using certain words. It’s true that how a writer describes the female body, in particular, is a very personal and stylized thing. But most romance readers are not so delicate that you need to say “tender pink crests.” Just say nipple. No one will mind.

 Leave out the euphemisms. If you find yourself writing “coochie,” perhaps you yourself are not comfortable with the level of description in your scene. Your readers will know it. Further, if “flesh knife” appears in your novel, might I suggest any number of better alternatives?

 “Moist” and “creamy” are best left to describe the excellent cake your lovers will enjoy together afterwards. Enough said.

3. Say something!
One of the things I look for in a great love scene is dialog. Keep in mind that these are two human beings. Interacting. And that interaction should move the story along, not just serve as a sexy digression. Dialog is a highly efficient and interesting way to convey emotional context. As you sit down to craft a love scene, try thinking about it as a dialog scene with physical details to support.

4. Employ at least three senses.
In the throes of writing a sex scene (no pun intended!), it’s easy for us writers to forget that our sense of touch is only one arrow in the quiver. What we see and hear, what we smell, and what we taste play equally important roles. By layering in several senses, you can paint a three-dimensional picture that is far more vivid, compelling, and artfully sexy.

Oh, baby!

What could be more terrifying than falling in love with the person who is your good place? Maybe realizing just a smidge too late that there can be dire consequences to becoming your best friend’s lover.

The lives of Keir Stevens and Selene Georgiou serendipitously collide midspan on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, one jarring step ahead of fate. He’s a temporary transplant from Seattle; she’s facing the biggest career opportunity of her life. They have no notion of the common thread that connects them.

As they come to discover they share a similar adversity, their relationship evolves from a fun and frivolous infatuation with nowhere to go into a true friendship with sincerity, humor, and respect at its heart.

It’s awfully hard not to fall in love with that—even if you’re pretty darn certain you shouldn’t.

But when love and friendship suffer their own devastating collision—their interests brutally conflicting—the consequences of blurring the lines between the two suddenly become real. In the end, which one will be the stronger? And more importantly, can either survive?

AFTEREFFECTS is a standalone dual POV adult contemporary romance about the things we choose in life out of all the things that are beyond our choosing—a tale of love and friendship, of time and how we spend it, and of the inner wars that ultimately show us what really matters.

Selene lifted her left hand and touched my face with her palm. It was definitely a new kind of closeness for us, at least sober—one to which I gave no resistance. Her skin felt warm and smooth as she stroked my cheek gently. And I couldn’t take my eyes off her face. My God, she was stunning. This close, I absorbed the perfection of her features, of her delicate earlobes. A tiny piece of dark hair curled around the back of one.

The air between us seemed to crackle quietly, and I sat frozen in my seat in case any movement might cause her to draw away.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you clean-shaven,” she said softly.

I could feel her breath, too, warm against my face. My fingers itched to reach up and touch her mouth, to feel whether it was as soft as I remembered. My heartbeat picked up not only faster but harder, like it was punching me from the inside.

Had a goal been scored just then I wouldn’t have noticed. Nothing could have pulled me from that trance. I didn’t hear anything going on around us. Not the crowd, not the announcer, not the buzzer.

Only her.

Only her voice and her eyes and her breath. The memory of her mouth.

“Do you have a preference?” I asked roughly. I had no idea what possessed me to ask her that.

No, that’s a lie. That other side of me wanted to be everything she wanted and would have shaved every single day if that’s what she asked of me.

“No.” Her beautiful lips curved slightly upward. “How could I choose between James Bond and Indiana Jones?”

Her palm came to rest on my jawline, and I took a deep breath. When had my wanting her turned into this painful kind of ache?

Under the sanctity of her expression, I had a sudden and startling thought that maybe we could write a different ending for the two of us. One I hadn’t yet considered. Maybe there was a different story we could tell in which the things we had to offer would be enough.

There was obviously more to our relationship than just friendship, and perhaps we could figure out how to have something more than what we’d allowed ourselves. After all, there was care and respect at the heart of everything we did together. That had to mean something.

About the Author: LJ Greene is a self-professed obsessive multi-tasker who writes really boring stuff by day and lets her inner romantic fly by night. Savor the magic of the season with #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber’s newest Christmas novel, filled with warmth, humor, the promise of love, and a dash of unexpected adventure.

Ashley Davison, a graduate student in California, desperately wants to spend the holidays with her family in Seattle. Dashiell Sutherland, a former army intelligence officer, has a job interview in Seattle and must arrive by December 23. Though frantic to book a last-minute flight out of San Francisco, both are out of luck: Every flight is full, and there’s only one rental car available. Ashley and Dash reluctantly decide to share the car, but neither anticipates the wild ride ahead.

Their feelings catch them off guard—never before has either been so excited about a first meeting. But the two are in for more twists and turns along the way as they rescue a lost puppy, run into petty thieves, and even get caught up in a case of mistaken identity. Though Ashley and Dash may never reach Seattle in time for Christmas, the season is still full of surprises—and their greatest wishes may yet come true.

Christmas, a puppy and love. How can you go wrong?

I’ve never read a Debbie Macomber book and I’m glad I picked this one up. I have to admit, I grabbed it because of the dog on the cover. I’m a sucker for dog stories. This one ticked that box for me.

The writing flowed well and it was hard to put this book down–I had to. I couldn’t stay up late enough to finish it. That said, some of the subplot was a tad odd… I really had to stretch to go along with it. But I can’t say it was enough to turn me off. The bit about the biker… Well, you’ll have to read it for yourself to make a decision.

Ashley and Dashiell (Ash and Dash lol) were an interesting pairing. They seemed to have little in common and the romance happened a bit on the quick side, but with the dash of Christmas tossed in, it was a satisfying quick read.

If you want a book that’s cozy for the holidays, then this might be the one for you.

Set in the 1980’s, we are immediately thrown in the action when our heroine walks into a bar, looking for a specific someone whose help she needs. She finds him, but in his drunken state, she isn’t sure what use he will be to her after all.

Grace is a strong character, both physically and mentally. R.C. has his demons chasing him, which have influenced the decisions he has made in life. Something about Grace challenges those demons, making him want to help her. They head off to a private island, unconnected to the rest of the world, with a very loose plan on what to do once they get there. Of course, things don’t go according to plan, when their host appears to be in China on a business trip, leaving his wife in charge.

This book had an Agatha Christie feel to it as the various guests each have their own reasons for being there, and their behaviour once they arrive. Although I was invested with the two main characters, there wasn’t much about the others to help me connect to them. Only one or two are mentioned in detail, and I do like hearing about others. Especially when it’s a limited number of characters in the first place.

Well written, with a smooth pace, this is a great little adventure/mystery story with romance too. This book is the perfect length for a lunch-break book, or one to read in the bath. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and have no hesitation in recommending it.

It is swift and thorough—Three billion people die in six weeks. The immediate questions are: What is causing this epidemic? Why does it affect some of us and not all of us?

It’s hard to fight an illness that doesn’t act like any other disease humans have encountered before.

Fewer things are more frightening to me than the thought of living in the middle of a pandemic. This is even more true when no one knows how it is spread or where it came from. Some of the best scenes in this story were the ones that showed how ordinary folks reacted to the sudden deaths of loved ones and even strangers. They were every bit as unnerved as I’d expect anyone to be in that situation.

While the plot itself was interesting, the multiple punctuation errors in this book made it difficult to read. I spotted many sentences that could have been interpreted in multiple ways due to how commas, periods, and quotation marks were used in them and the sentences close to them. Sometimes I was able to figure out what the narrator was trying to say without too much trouble, but there were other times when I had to make an educated guess and move on without being sure if I was understanding everything correctly.

The medical aspects of the storyline were fascinating. One member of a family could die, but their spouse, child, or other relative would be untouched by these symptoms. People’s age and health before the start of this epidemic also didn’t have any correlation with who survived. This isn’t something I’ve seen done in any of the other science fiction books about similar topics, so I was eager to find out what was causing all of this death and why it didn’t behave the same way that other contagious diseases tend to do.

I found it challenging to keep track of the large cast of characters, especially since most of them weren’t around often enough for the audience to really get to know them. It was easy for me to mix them up even after the storyline settled down and I began recognizing the same names cropping up over and over again. Knowing more about what the characters looked and acted like would have gone a long way to help me remember who was who.

There was a fantastic plot twist that I didn’t see coming in advance. It was something that had been subtly hinted at in the beginning, but that reference was so well-done that I didn’t catch it until the narrator made the big reveal and I’d had a chance to think about what I’d read up until that point. While I obviously can’t go into any detail about this without wandering into spoiler territory, I was pleased with how the author balanced the necessary amount of foreshadowing with not giving his audience too much of a heads up about where he was going with that in the beginning.

If you love post-apocalyptic fiction, I’d recommend giving The Plague a try.

I found this to be a fast-paced and interesting story. I loved how Edward and Graham were both so similar but still their own characters. While the sexual chemistry and tension was thick throughout the entire story, I enjoyed that there was still plenty of plot – Edward’s slightly crazy ex-lover and the stress of Graham wanting to prove something to the board of his father’s company. For such a short story there is plenty going on and the sizzling sex between Edward and Graham just adds a lovely bit of spice.

The whole ex-boyfriend plot was a little clichéd, but added a nice element of conflict into the story. I felt the real strength here, though, was in the addictive quality of Edward and Graham learning about each other and testing each other’s limits. Both men are used to being in charge, strong willed and determined. This could have turned into a chest-beating alpha style competition but I really loved how both men were willing to give when needed and both acknowledged that they could learn things from each other. The sex was smoking hot, but also had a tenderness to it that I felt added a lot of depth – Edward and Graham weren’t just hooking up or having a quick fling, they were falling in love and it was wonderful to read.

Fast paced and with two very interesting, complex characters this was a great short story.

Told in five parts, this novel unravels the challenges between two unlikely Nisei friends, Jim and Russell, into adulthood during the Second World War. As restrictions are imposed, (even in the safe, rural community of Bainbridge Island,) as harassments escalate, (including the F.B.I. invading their homes and deporting their fathers to Montana for espionage trials,) the fated day arrives: evacuation of all Japanese civilians. Rounded up like cattle, tagged, they are hauled to the fringes of Death Valley: Manzanar. Together they must survive racism, gang violence, and the harsh elements of the environment. Together they must prove their loyalty, especially after a tragic riot on the eve of Pearl Harbor’s anniversary. While Russell enlists in a segregated army, becoming part of one the most decorated units in U.S. history, Jim is sent to a different camp for the “No-No” boys: those who are marked disloyal. Removed from their families, they are forced to reevaluate their identities and discover, most importantly, what it means to forgive.

Russell hit the ground, pushing the bottom wire up. Naomi rolled under. He turned to look behind. Tomiko spun around and ran back to the shed.

Horrified, Russell hollered, “What are you doing?”

Naomi grabbed his neck and collar, yanking him forward. His arm snagged on the wire, ripping his favorite sweatshirt. “Guard!” she panted.

Panicking, he fumbled to his feet, scuffling away from the fence. Naomi snatched his hand, pulling, running. He darted across, but tripped and fell near the edge of one of the barracks. For a second, he thought he felt a bullet stab inside his ribs. He looked up. An internal police officer stood in front of him. Blinking and refocusing, he realized the officer was his brother-in-law, Osamu. He carried a flashlight and wore a white patch on his left arm that had “POLICE” painted in black. Dressed in jeans and a brown, corduroy coat, he frowned at Russell and Naomi.

“If I didn’t know any better,” Osamu firmly remarked, “I’d think you two were up to no good.” Crossing his arms and leaning to one side, he maintained, “Care to tell me why the both of you are out of breath?” They didn’t respond. A guilty expression smeared on their faces. “I didn’t think so.” He then peered past the fence to investigate the shed. Russell finally rose, still holding Naomi’s hand. They kept their eyes to the ground. Returning his attention to them, Osamu stated, “You two need to stay clear of the fence. I really don’t want to know what you were doing. Kiotsukete, kudasai. This is a warning. Next time I may not be so nice, Russell. Don’t make me have another conversation with your mother.”

Stunned, Russell and Naomi blinked. They couldn’t leave their friends behind.

“Scat!” he ordered.

Naomi tugged on Russell’s arm, quickly walking away. Panic and guilt drilled inside his chest. He couldn’t believe it. He couldn’t abandon them just like that. Without food or water. Without toiletry. For how long? Until it got dark? Until the camp fell into a deep sleep? What if one of them got bit by a rattler or stung by a scorpion? How could he help his friends? What were Jim and Tomiko going to do for the next eighteen hours?

If adventure has a name…it must be Lady India Rochester. The intrepid archaeologist possesses a sharp blade and an even sharper knack for uncovering history’s forgotten women. Unfortunately, she has one annoying weakness: the dangerously handsome Duke of Ravenwood. Former best friend. Current enemy. And the man who dared to break her heart.

Daniel Bonds, the Duke of Ravenwood, is a thrill-seeking antiquities hunter who only plays by one rule: Never fall in love. He’s in it for the fortune and glory. At least that’s what he wants the world to think. He’s sworn to hide his tangled web of secrets, especially from the one woman he cares about and will protect at any cost.

But when a priceless relic is stolen from the British Museum, the rivals must align forces. Racing to recover the stolen antiquity and avert an international disaster? All in a day’s work. Avoiding their buried feelings? More and more impossible. For love is about to become the greatest treasure of all.

The grand adventure begins…now!

Fire and ice? In Lenora Bell’s For the Duke’s Eyes Only (part of Bell’s School for Dukes series) we find ourselves immediately wondering if two such different characters can possibly be meant-to-be.

Lady India and the Duke are quite well known to one another. In fact, they’ve known each other since childhood. They are about to share a quest, however, their goals are anything but the same. Their world is not just the ‘much loved’ realm of the London set, as in so many such romances, but the world of nineteenth century archeology. The lady is, unexpectedly, an archeologist. She is a scientist at heart and has lofty goals… but will she be undone by a certain measure of chemistry?

For Daniel, the very much titled ‘Duke of Ravenwood’ is a magnificent and engaging fellow and stalks the same world as she–but for gain. It seems anything personal between them would be utterly unwise, but each are drawn to the other. And, each believe they know better. Their interactions are a matter of slash and parry…and keeping a lid on their mutual attraction. The both have their own reasons, too.

The characters make this story; India is more than strong-minded (and progressive for her time) but also clever and insightful. There is more to Raven, the Duke, than one might guess, too. His goals might not be so self-serving…but no spoilers here!

The characters themselves will keep readers glued, but truly, the plot itself is riveting, the place perfect, and there is enough unexpected to keep readers guessing.

For the Duke’s Eyes Only is all its very compelling cover promises. I’ve put another by Lenora Bell right at the top of my reading list! Do read.

Deep in the southernmost part of Alabama, along the banks of a lazy winding river, lies the sleepy little community known as Lost River, a place that time itself seems to have forgotten. After a startling diagnosis from his doctor, Oswald T. Campbell leaves behind the cold and damp of the oncoming Chicago winter to spend what he believes will be his last Christmas in the warm and welcoming town of Lost River. There he meets the postman who delivers mail by boat, the store owner who nurses a broken heart, the ladies of the Mystic Order of the Royal Polka Dots Secret Society, who do clandestine good works. And he meets a little redbird named Jack, who is at the center of this tale of a magical Christmas when something so amazing happened that those who witnessed it have never forgotten it. Once you experience the wonder, you too will never forget A Redbird Christmas.

A heartwarming Christmas tale.

I wanted a sweet, quick read for Christmas and this book ticked all my boxes. It’s cute and wonderful. Fannie Flagg knows how to tell a story. I was engaged with the characters and wanted the book to keep going.

I loved the idea of Oswald wanting to go home to be comfortable since he had little time left. If I were going somewhere to just be, then go to Lost River. It’s full of characters and quirkiness. The plot is simple and embodies the spirit of the season. I couldn’t put it down.

If you’re looking for a book that’s a comfort read and will work for an hour or two, then this is the book you want.
