Seventeen-year-old Carrie is lying in her backyard ignoring all the looming responsibilities in her life, when a fox makes a mad dash across the grass in front of her. After she manages to keep her dog from attacking the frightened animal, the fox turns to Carrie and seems to bow in gratitude before he disappears into the bushes. All Carrie knows in that moment is that something has unexpectedly changed in her life.

Carrie has been best friends with Lindsay Smith and Rebecca Campbell for years. During a summer when they should focus on choosing colleges, the girls suddenly find themselves swept away on the adventure of their lives. The fox reappears three days later and reveals to Carrie that he is Adom, emissary to the king of Hadariah. With his land of music and magic in peril, Adom has been sent to seek help from Carrie and her friends. In the blink of an eye, the three teenage girls go from living an average suburban life to being the champions of a world where they must contend with giants, witches, and magical beings. Will they ever make it home once more?

Carrie dreads her upcoming senior year in high school when she will have to “make decisions about her future, decide a path, and begin to grow up—something she dreaded with all her heart and soul. She wished she could just run away and have an adventure like the characters in the books she loved.” But beware what you wish for as you may just get it! Carrie and her friends Lindsay and Rebecca follow a talking fox named Adom through a gap in a bush in Carrie’s backyard and end up on a quest to save Adom’s world, the world of magic where all the stories the girl’s grandmothers told them when they were small actually happened.

Alisse Lee Goldenberg has written a charming magical story showing the importance of trusting in things which cannot be seen and believing in the magic surrounding each and every one of us. The girls run into many adventures as they work to fulfill their quest, and they meet various beings along the way who are not always trustworthy. Carrie, Lindsay, and Rebecca have been best friends since pre-school in spite of their very different personalities. I liked all three of the girls, especially Carrie. They did seem younger than seniors in high school, but possibly that is because they live rather sheltered and protected lives. They have to grow up fast, though, as the obstacles in their quest become harder and harder.

King Asmodeus has stolen the strings from a magical violin and in so doing, removed all the music from the land, dooming his world to a slow and painful death as the sun no longer shines. He is doing this because he is horrified by the human world where, as he says, “You people do not believe in anything you cannot see, touch, or spend. You are a self-serving, selfish lot. If we all disappear, dissolve into nothingness, no one from your world would notice or even care. No one would mourn us. No one would even remember we existed at all. Your world already exists in darkness.” Is Asmodeus right? He is certainly very powerful and deceitful, but will Carrie and her friends be able to defeat him?

This novel is written as an exposition on the world of fairy tales, explaining the actual events that underpin many of the tales the girls heard as children. However, Carrie and her friends are getting the real story, not watered down simplified tales. They make friends in this magical world and they certainly believe that our world needs the magical world. This belief fuels their determination to succeed, but is this determination enough? The plot moves quickly and Adom’s world is fully and richly described. There are mysteries and puzzles to solve and tough decisions to make, and Goldenberg brings her readers right into the story so they feel as if they too are on the quest.

Can three teenage suburban girls save this world? Will they succeed on their quest? The Strings of the Violin will touch its readers’ hearts with magic and wonder, something our world truly needs. If you enjoy fantasy, especially the world of fairy tales, be sure not to miss out on this wonderful adventure.

I easily saw how Dominic could dazzle and make Rachel fall so in love so quickly that she forgets her mission.

I enjoyed the first book but this book was even more enjoyable to me. There was just something about Dominic and Rachel’s love and their courtship that called to me. It was a sweet whirlwind affair but I enjoyed it immensely. The ending was very satisfying and I’m waiting anxiously for the next story.

Cami’s hunted by two vicious men from her past. It’s the only reason she follows her newfound visions to the two powerful Santir shapeshifters, Linc and Colm. Intense attraction and uncontrolled magic draw her closer to them despite her reservations. As much as she wants to fall into their arms and bed, she knows that her past and Colm’s beliefs make any kind of relationship between them impossible.

The desire to get closer to Cami surprises Linc and Colm. It’s different than anything they’ve ever felt before. Their need to uncover her secrets is only surpassed by their hunger for her kiss and touch. They soon realize that feeling is far more than sexual attraction. She’s their mate. To claim and keep her, they’ll have to earn her trust and protect her, or the danger stalking her will steal their chance at happiness.

Fear and distrust have been Cami’s constant companions ever since she escaped the control of the false Ardin, Laed and Kynar. If having two crazed men seeking retribution wasn’t enough to deal with there’s also the magic she’s acquired that seems to be growing. The strange dreams and visions that were brought on by the magic she can’t seem to control, led her to a true bonded pair of Ardin, Linc and Colm. They’ll have to help her work through some pretty serious physical and mental scars before they can claim Cami as their mate.

Her Mates’ Embrace opens by dropping the reader right into the last leg of Cami’s journey to find safety with Linc and Colm. Ms. Airies alludes to a nasty confrontation that occurred between Cami and the false Ardin but the actual event is never actually shown in this book. This novel is a part of the Primal Attractions Series and so that event could have happened in one of the other books. She gives plenty reasons to feel empathy towards Cami and hope that the two bad guys are caught and dealt with before they can find and hurt her. That’s where the alpha males meant to be her mates come in.

Even if it did happen elsewhere I would have liked to have read a short recount of what brought on their anger and how she escapes to find Linc and Colm. I think seeing her realize that she suddenly had magic and come to the conclusion that Linc and Colm could protect her while helping her learn to use it would have added several layers to the story. Not to say that this story isn’t complex. It is but seeing the back story as opposed to having bits of it dropped in would have been nice as well. I can see how Ms. Airies might have simply wanted to move the story along so that we the readers could spend more time with Linc/Colm/Cami as their relationship progressed.

Linc and Colm are bonded. Among the Santir shapeshifters that’s a pretty special connection but they still have an opportunity to find their true mate. Maybe it was Cami’s trust issues or something Colm says but she has a hard time believing he actually wants to find a true mate. Linc and Colm’s bond also includes a sexual side. I was a little disappointed that there was only one occasion where they explore that side. Having said that, once they come to realize that Cami is their mate it pretty much becomes a game of cats and mouse. Cami’s quick temper keeps them on their toes but I knew they’d win their mate in the end. It just took a bit of convincing that wasn’t at all unpleasant to witness. Once Linc and Colm get Cami to calm down and realize she wants them every bit as much as they want her the sparks turned into a full on heatwave.

I knew that at some point this trio would have to face the bad guys from Cami’s past. The separate fights that end in their capture are a bit anti-climatic but since the focus of the story seemed to be more on Linc, Colm and Cami finally fulfilling the mate bond I can see why it was glossed over.

I liked the hero’s in this tale very much but that didn’t surprise me. I’ve read other alpha shifter books by this author and she does a fantastic job of character building. These guys are the right amount of hard, hot and heart. I had no troubling routing for them to win their girl.

Her Mates’ Embrace is a great stand alone title in the Primal Attractions series. Ms. Airies world building brought right into the scene and kept me involved in the story. Readers who look for spunky heroines and uber alpha males will enjoy getting to know these three. The chemistry is intense and pretty instant but the love builds slow and sweet.

Trapped in a solitary cabin during a wicked snowstorm, she can’t resist her two, wellhung studs, nor can she deny they’ve claimed her heart.

Resistance is an awesome story with a uniquely tantalizing plot. I really enjoyed reading this book. It’s one of those exciting new world stories that will keep your interest and have you fanning yourself the whole way through.

Here’s the rundown: Terrorists unleash a lethal virus that turns women into nymphomaniac sex slaves. Most of the female population is wiped out. The surviving women suffer from frightening side effects. Screw or go crazy . With women in short supply the government (run by men) enacts an outrageous claiming law that says multiple men can claim one woman as their wife. Women become prey to be hunted by unscrupulous men and high ranking government officials. Pleasure houses and brothels are commonplace. However, all hope is not lost. There are a few women that are willing to fight for this white slavery to end. To gain their freedom and equality.

Reena is one of those fearless women. She is the rebel leader of the resistance and fights against this injustice against her sisters. Without remorse she doesn’t hesitate to use men to get what she wants. Her rebelliousness has made her a danger to the new government. Now she has a price on her head. She is hunted by so many factions that she’s lost count. But they’ll have to catch her first. And Reena’s not going down without a fight.

Will “Blade” Smith has a kill order with Reena’s name on it. Yet, every time the ruthless assassin gets his luscious target in his sights he hesitates. He keeps remembering their one night of incredible passion.

Relentless bounty hunter, Cade Outlaw, tracks Reena down to collect the bounty on her head. The gorgeous redhead is just another payday to him. Still, he can’t help but admire the rebel leader for her spit and fire…and her sensuality.

After Reena gets nabbed by a group of despicable hunters Will and Cade rush in to save her. Her guys are injured in a spectacular shoot out and Reena saves them. The fun begins when they are stranded at a remote cabin during a snowstorm. Soon the two guys who set out to capture Reena for the price on her head find themselves trying to capture her heart instead.

There was a lot of conflict in this story. All three of the leads had to come to terms with taking what they wanted ….and thought they could never have. The sex scenes were scorching hot. And the characters were fabulous. The thing I most admired about Reena was that she never hesitated to takes what she wanted. This woman was fearless! Drugging two hunky studs to have her way with them. Like taking candy from a baby. My hats off to that gal. You betcha I enjoyed this book. It’s one of the more steamy ones I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a while. The sex-capades are so steamy that they fairly sizzle! There is no way to disappoint with this one. It’s hotter than a chili pepper, folks.

Harris Bender is a quiet sweet artist who is also a bear shifter that has a huge crush on vampire leader Rohan. I adored Harris, he’s an amazing character who takes cares of his friends and those he loves.

Rohan has lived a long time, he has searched for his blood bonded for so long he is surprised when he finds Harris. Watching Rohan court the gun shy Harris was my favorite part, he obviously wanted to push harder for Harris to admit to being his mate, but was so patient that I loved him.

Previous characters from other books make an appearance including a mysterious character who will be the focus of the fifth book in the series and I can’t wait. This is a great shifter story, I loved the characters and I recommend this as a quick night time read.

Helen Ashfield’s world is about to be turned upside down. Is she ready?

Helen Ashfield’s life is complicated. Not only must she adjust to her parents’ divorce, but she has to come to grips with her new school in the small South African Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet. She’s sorely mistaken if she thinks she’s going to slot seelessly into her new life. Her growing magical powers have attracted the unwanted attention of Trystan, a vampire, who may not have her best interests at heart.
Outcast from his kind for drinking another vampire’s blood, Trystan has been on the run for almost a hundred years from Mantis–the closest thing their kind has to an enforcer. All Trystan wants is an existence of quiet anonymity, but Helen turns his world upside-down.

Helen’s powers also mark her as one of Mantis’ targets. If Mantis gets control of Helen, she’ll change the course of history…for the worse.

Will Helen’s life be worth saving if Mantis captures her?

Helen’s world is quickly crumbling around her. As she desperately tries to keep her family together, she’s thrust into a world filled with magic, vampires, and other beings. Several different people, including the ruthless vampire Mantis, want to control Helen and her blossoming powers, but no one seem to care what Helen wants. Nothing is what it seems and Helen has some tough decisions in her future. Will she be strong enough to make the right choice when the time comes?

Helen had my sympathy from page one. With her home life in shambles, the very last thing she needed was her magical powers to come to life, especially since she didn’t even know that she had any. Still I think she handles the hard hitting revelations concerning the true nature of the world around her with grace. She is an exceptionally strong young woman and it is very easy to admire her. She is very loyal to her friends and family and doesn’t hesitate to stand up and protect others who need help.

Trystan makes an interesting “hero.” He’s definitely not an average vampire. He’s kept himself hidden away for so long, I’m surprised he knew how to interact with another human being at all. The most meaningful relationship in his life seems to be with his car. When he first met Helen, it was hard to tell exactly what Trystan wanted with her. However, as the story progressed, it became clear that he was developing genuine feelings for her and goes to great lengths to protect her from other vampires who seek to use and control her. Trystan and Helen are a very unlikely couple, but I’m hoping they find their way to a happy ending in the future.

The pacing of Camdeboo Nights is a little slow at first. However, my patience definitely paid off. The last half of the book is very exciting and had me on the edge of my seat. A lot happens in a very short amount of time. In fact, the change in pace is so abrupt that the ending felt rushed to me. New characters were introduced and Ms. Dorman hints about big changes that will greatly affect Helen and her friends. When I finished reading, I was left wanting more of an explanation on a lot of things that happened. I can only hope that Ms. Dorman has a sequel in the works that will satisfy my curiosity.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Camdeboo Nights. It is an exciting young adult novel that slowly builds to an ending that can only be described as explosive.

She’d be the perfect catch if he could take his eye off the ball.

Boys of Summer, Book 1

Emmy Kasper knows exactly how lucky she is. In a sport with few opportunities for women at the pro level, she’s just landed her dream job as head athletic trainer for the San Francisco Felons baseball team. Screwing up is not an option.

She’s lost in thought as she pedals to the spring training facility, her mind abuzz with excitement as she rounds a corner—and plows head-on into two runners. The end of her career dances before her eyes when she realizes she’s almost run over the star pitcher.

As Tucker Lloyd watches the flustered Emmy escape with his bandana tied around her skinned knee, the view is a pleasant change from worrying about his flagging fastball. At thirty-six, the tail end of his career is glimmering on the horizon. If he can’t pull something extraordinary out of his ball cap, the new crop of rookies could make this season his last.

The last thing either of them needs is a distraction.

The last thing either of them expects is love.

Pitch Perfect is a very good story. It centers on the development of a “forbidden” relationship between thirty-six year old pitcher Tucker Lloyd, whose career is hanging by a thread because of having one year off due to the surgery, and Emmy Kasper, the first female head athletic trainer of the baseball team. They both have their reasons why they should not be together, but the attraction between them is much stronger than any obstacles.

As a baseball fan and former softball player, I enjoyed reading Pitch Perfect. Author Sierra Dean captured well the essence of the game and the companionship between the players. The most important details were her descriptions of the fields and the atmosphere prior to and during a game. The writing was done so well that I felt like I was in the crowd watching the game. Characters, both main and secondary, were likable and well written. I felt a little sad after the last page because it meant I had to part with them. I grew very fond of them. Another thing I liked about the hero and heroine is the fact that they weren’t bogged down by being tormented by their past; they do not have any deep and dark secrets, and that was really refreshing.

The only thing that lessened my reading pleasure was the author’s occasional use of unnecessary details. Her in depth description of the new Yankees’ stadium and history seemed more like an info dump. Although I agreed with her point completely, going into too much detail tended to really disrupt the pace of the story and slowed it down. I think that if the story had focused less on the not so important details, it would have been better.

All in all I liked Pitch Perfect. I would definitely recommend it as a good read, but especially to those romance readers who like sports romances.

What happens when a Wiccan high-priestess and three mischievous nymphs conjure spells on an environmentalist and a jet engine designer? Magic, mayhem, and wild nights of passion.

Justine Tori Cryst is to be initiated into Gaia’s universal coven. Problem is Justine must conjoin with a perfect soul-mate at the last stroke of midnight on her 29th birthday.

Shaun Kelly can’t believe his luck, or bad luck, when the woman who crushed his heart in college magically returns into his life. But crushed hearts mend. He still loves her. However, the chances of his rekindling their romance are zip because he’s certain Justine is hell-bent on putting the company he works for out of business permanently.

Unbeknownst to either, Justine’s goddess mother is determined to bring Shaun and Justine back together because Shaun has exactly what Justine needs to become the mother of the next generation of powerful little Wicca’s—his gene pool.

Tia Dani creates a magical world that uses potent sexual fairy dust against the backdrop of a modern world. Miniature pixies are guardian angels to Justine and manipulate her love life, and dreams, mischievously. But despite — or maybe because of — their interference, the sexual tension is thick, swelteringly so, and the dreams start a sexual adventure.

However, due to the need for Justine to conjoin with a soul-mate, the story focuses on sex and sexual activity, sometimes to the point at which it detracts from the plot. For instance, the first third of the book focuses on dreams and getting Justine and Shaun to fall for each other again but, due to the lack of instant action and reaction which comes from an environment in which the two actually meet, this section slows the pace of the novel. It also contributes to the feeling this story is more sexual than romantic. Despite this, the detailed description of their imagined meetings are very hot and would be a great addition to any bubble bath bookcase.

General description is also well executed. For example, a be-ribboned Elektra is immediately visual in the reader’s mind and portrays her character well. However, there are also instances where more can be made of description. There are also places description has perhaps gone too wild and so many colours are used that the narrative seems chaotic. For example, ‘the tiny faery readjusted the top to her maroon, short dress and then straightened her white tights with blue-violet hearts’; there are so many colours in this sentence, a reader can become lost in colour rather than what they are describing.

There was also an issue on a number of occasions when masturbation is referred to as ‘sex’, which jolted and disengaged me from the writing as I consider masturbation a lone activity while sex is a joint activity and therefore this word feels erroneous.

However, after the sexual dream, descriptions come to the point quicker and are more apt for the situation. Senses are also well used to create effect and the sexual encounters feel realistic but not overly intimate. This is also the point at which the plot picks up, the characters meet and the sparks fly. Due to this more direct conflict, the story becomes more interesting and the pages go by quicker to lead to the story’s climax.

The story is, in essence, two people in lust and love finally joining in the climax. The colourful ritual is full of well-meaning relatives with echoes of old ancestors. It is well-described and magical in more than just romantic ways. The paranormal aspect of their relationship now adds to the joining, potently and visually underlining the love between two people and providing a satisfactory conclusion.

While The Black School can technically be read as a standalone piece, my unfamiliarity with the backstory made certain scenes difficult to understand because the complicated events leading up to them were so briefly mentioned. It would have been nice to see all of the stories bundled into one volume so that new readers can easily access everything the audience knows about this world so far.

With that being said, I am quite interested in learning more about the backstories of the main characters in this piece. The brief glimpses of their earlier lives that do show up in this book have whetted my appetite for more information about them. I sense that there is a lot we don’t know about the motivations and personality traits of certain individuals, and I think that figuring that out will make their adventures unforgettable.

The Black School piqued my interest right away. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves richly detailed fantasy worlds that are built slowly over time.

It was anything but predictable, and the author kept me guessing as to what secrets would be revealed next. The characters were charismatic and pulled me into the story right away. It was an easy book to love, I enjoyed every second.

The book started off with Ryan getting served with divorce papers. It’s quite shocking and brings back memories of a wife no one knew about. The premise is that Ryan, a high profile rock star, and Julia got married in secret, right before he and his band went out of the country on tour. Somewhere along the way Ryan gets beaten and mugged and as a result his memory is blurry. Meanwhile, back in New Zealand, Julia can’t get in contact with her husband, and the situation is made more damning by the tabloid pics of her man with all his fan girls. Making matters worse, Julia has suffered a tragedy, which comes out later in the story. Once he has his memories back, Ryan isn’t about to give up on their marriage. He wears his heart on his sleeve and lays bare his soul to win her back.

I felt that this book was very character driven. The author did a good job with the character development. While I was conflicted as to whether or not I liked Julia, I adored Ryan. He worked very hard to convince Julia that the marriage was worth saving. As soon as it became obvious, which was early on, I think Julia should have forgiven him. She doubted him, but that didn’t stop her from sleeping with him. I felt that Ryan made all of the effort , and Julia wanted to give up. She had been hiding a lot of secrets, had some skeletons in her closet, yet she had no faith in Ryan. So I didn’t have a lot of sympathy for her.

Ryan was sweet and I easily fell in love with this hero. Sexy as sin, vulnerable, watching his every step, but stubbornly refusing to give up on what he wanted. He was also a hero who had a deep sense of responsibility, which the author aptly demonstrated throughout the entire book. He wasn’t a choir boy by any means, he had a naughty side that the author showed.

The sex scenes livened up the book. The chemistry between Ryan and Julia sizzled. Ryan wasn’t afraid to show his possessive side, but was also tender with his wife. There was also a flashback to some earlier kinky games that the couple played with Ryan’s fellow band member and best friend Caleb that was intriguing. The book had some great secondary characters that I’d like to read about in the future. More Caleb, please… just saying.

The author’s segue into some of the scenes was less than smooth, and I was left feeling confused about what was going on. This didn’t keep me from enjoying the story though. The way the author delivered the backstory worked in this case. By giving it to the reader in bits and pieces throughout the story, it worked to ramp up the suspense and kept me on edge. Waiting to see what delicious secrets would be revealed next. Gotta say, there quite a few surprises here. The story took a few twists that made it more exciting. Even after the uneasy reconciliation there were still a few secrets left to reveal. Oh my, the author pulled out the big guns and took me completely by surprise at that point.

So, the bottom line is that Past Regrets is a great book. It was fun and easy to read. I enjoyed it, and I think that others will too. So I’m happy to recommend this one.
