A missing boyfriend, an elf on the run and Martian vampires. What’s a private eye to do?

Randolf C. Aloysius is a hard-boiled private eye in the best sense of that profession. He says that he is a Mongrel. “You can never tell about Mongrels, and there are more of us around now ever since the Goldilocks affair.” I was hooked by the opening of this novel: “I don’t like Elves, never have. I sat tilting back in my chair counting the stains on the ceiling when she walked through the open door of my inner office unannounced.” The story takes place in the future on Earth when travel to other planets is commonplace. It is a world populated with many different species, such as Banshees, Elves, Demons, Vampires, Trolls, and even some humans, although there aren’t any human characters in this story.

The plot starts out simply enough. Aloysius is hired to find a runaway lover and an antique wedding ring. However, as he soon discovers, nothing is simple about this job, and the plot moves swiftly with lots of twists and turns before the job is completed. I really liked the use of the first person narrator, and Aloysius has a unique way of looking at the world. The descriptions of Central City are detailed and fascinating. “Outside, evening settled around Central City. A gentle rain streaked the windowpane, creating false images and moving pictures that faded and ran. The flickering glow from the dangling yellow bulb overhead cast barely enough light to read the note by. The wizards at the powerhouse were having problems harnessing the tornadoes again tonight.”

The story is definitely plot driven and the other characters serve that plot. Aloysius doesn’t trust any of them and so neither did I, and it turns out that no one is quite what they seem and everyone is out for whatever they can get. Aloysius has to navigate through webs of deception and he manages that very skillfully.

If you enjoy the hard-boiled crime novel set in a fantastic world with lots of interesting characters, then this just might be what you are looking for.

First Responders, Book 4

RCMP officer Matt Parker is weary from years of soul-draining work undercover and on special task forces. He’d like to erase one of his recent cases from his memory forever, but it haunts him night and day.

A temporary assignment to cover for an officer on maternity leave could be the small-town, low-demand break he needs to put the past behind him. Especially with the sexy local vet, who makes him forget everything but the way her body feels in his arms.

Lindsay Snow can’t help but notice the new cop in her small town—he’s hot, charming and—best of all—he’s not in town for long. When a call to shut down a horrific puppy mill exposes the tough, sexy cop’s dark memories, Lindsay’s heart wants desperately to reach out to him. Even as her instincts remind her that relationships are just a train wreck waiting to happen…

It is common knowledge that a book should be not judged by its cover. The same can be said for people. A hot guy who has a beautiful smile, great body, and wears a uniform can be a much more than meets the eyes. The heroine of Beneath the Badge, Lindsay Snow, judged Matt Parker based on her first impression and she was so wrong. Matt was more than just a great body in a police officer’s uniform.

In this short contemporary romance novel that is both sweet and dark, readers will meet two deeply wounded characters. At first it seems that they are irreversibly broken, but once they decide to give a relationship a try, they are able to overcome their sadness and open their hearts to love. And with love, the healing process started.

What I loved the most about Beneath the Badge were the characters. Both Lindsay and Matt are strong individuals who have a lot of emotional wounds, which are really serious and are a great obstacle for their relationship. But the author did a marvelous job in resolving their issues in a realistic way. The story focused solely on the development of their relationship, and there are no secondary characters.

Due to the complexity of the characters, this was an emotional read for me. I experienced a roller coaster of emotions and I enjoyed it very much. I learned something from this story; that you cannot help a person who does not want to be helped, no matter how hard you try.

Great characters and an interesting storyline is what made Beneath the Badge a great read for me. I highly recommend it.

Max’s high pressure job as a surgeon is getting to him and he’s starting to suffer for it. His roommate Simon has a solution for him, but is Max ready to give up control or will this Dom have to work for it?

Simon’s not used to dealing with such stubborn subs, but he can’t sit back and let Max’s health and sanity continue to decline in the name of his work. Enough is enough already and if Max doesn’t accept what he’s offering, then Simon might just have to come up with something even more drastic.

But when a night of passion between these two strong willed men exposes Simon’s secrets, it might be he who has to learn to trust and let go of the control he so desperately seeks.

Serving Simon is an interesting read. Simon is a Dom who likes control without the extra trappings of BDSM. Max is stressed to the breaking point and Simon has had enough of watching him run himself down.

Simon obviously really cares for Max, they’ve been roommates for a year and have never made a move on each other. I enjoyed watching the byplay between these characters. Max has to be so in control in his job that he wants to let go with Simon but fights it because he doesn’t think he should want to.

They have an interesting dynamic, they aren’t dating like a traditional couple but they do have a relationship that is more than sex. I don’t think Max could let go with someone he didn’t trust.

The ending kind of threw me, since I didn’t see it coming. Overall I enjoyed this story, it has the feel of a start of a series. I would definitely read more about Simon and Max. This is a pretty hot story with a Dom who loves control but not pain, and a strong sub who learns letting go can help him focus in his every day life.

Megan Lunceford has lost everything—all her money, her job, even her mother’s diary, and she’s about to lose her house if she can’t defend herself against a ten-million-dollar lawsuit by two sexy billionaires. Her final restitution for her ex’s crimes brings her to Destiny, Colorado, and face-to-face with Eric and Scott Knight, the men suing her.

When Megan enters the courtroom Eric and Scott immediately realize she’s innocent. Someone is using her to get to them, someone very dangerous. Her ex, their former employee, is in prison, but the man’s old allies are still on the outside. They make her an offer to drop the suit if she agrees to be their personal assistant twenty-four seven for three months. She agrees and they set out to find the actual culprit. Will the brothers keep Megan safe and win her heart before all is lost?

Be it luck, destiny or a court order that brought Megan to Colorado, she’s about to take down the reigning filthy rich playboys.

Megan Lunceford literally crashed into Eric and Scott Knight’s life at the end of book 1 of the Doms of Destiny. Now she’s going to turn their entire world upside down in the best way possible.

For me, Megan was an instantly likeable heroine. She’s had some pretty hard knocks in life but continues to tread water, barely. The backstory Ms. Lang paints for Megan is heart wrenching and completely believable. As much as I loved her I couldn’t wait to see the damage inflicted on her conniving and perfectly evil missing husband. His character created tension and all kinds of drama for Megan, Eric and Scott. I couldn’t help but give a mental fist pump when he’s put in his place. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him. Men like Kip don’t let others simply take what he feels belongs to him.

Eric and Scott Knight totally live up to their moniker. They may dress in black leather but they are totally her very own knights in shining armor! I personally love to see big bad Doms taken to their knees by a slip of girl. Not to worry these men make good use of their position and Megan has no complaints. The writing and the scenes are seriously hot in this little novel.

I’ve been reading books by Chloe Lang since the first book she published with sister Siren author, Sophie Oak. She always has terrific plot lines and fantastic characters but I think this has been my favorite so far. This story flows so very well and the timing is perfect for the three characters to come together. One way I measure a good story is how long it takes for the lead characters to consummate their relationship. As a general rule I don’t want it to happen too fast unless they have a history that backs up the act. If when I get to the first time without realizing I’m a fourth or nearly half-way through the book I know I’ve got a winner because that means the rest of the story kept my attention even before they have sex. That’s important and it makes the scene that much more meaningful. This is that kind of book. I stayed up late reading and woke up thinking about how quickly I could get back to my e-reader. Book three in the Doms of Destiny is already out and I can’t wait to dive into it.

Megan found what she was looking for in Destiny and I encourage readers who enjoy menage groupings with a heaping side of alpha male to take a trip to the Colorado mountains within the pages of this terrific series. The sign coming into Destiny proclaims it to be “the best-kept secret in Colorado” but it’s one I think readers will want to share time and again.

For West Coast filmmaker Bobbi Gallagher, going back to Sultry Springs is a last resort. But with her career in tatters, a documentary set in her hometown might be just what she needs to salvage her reputation. She just can’t let anything distract her again. Not even the gorgeous contractor her brother asked to watch over her. As if she can’t handle filming a few rowdy Texans.

Golden boy Trey Lewis, with his blond hair and Technicolor-blue eyes, is a leading man if Bobbi ever saw one. He’s strong and confident and—much to her delight—usually shirtless. He thinks keeping his best friend’s baby sister out of trouble will be easy. But he has no idea of the trouble in store for him…

There had been many theories floating around Sultry Springs about what happened to little Bobbi, especially since she was raised by a drunk who abandoned her oldest child. This created a interesting background story for the main character of A Shot of Sultry. Bobbi had fought tooth and nail from a young age to prove to everyone and herself that she was nothing like her mother. Yet, she still couldn’t avoid scandal. When she returns to Sultry Springs she knows she will need to face the past her mother had left behind including a sibling she knows nothing about.

Bobbi’s story intrigued me. I knew a bit about her from the previous story in this series, so I already wanted to know more about her. I was not disappointed. Bobbi’s upbringing definitely plays a role in who she is as in adult. It is clear she has some personality flaws and strengths because of what she seen and has been through. It made me root for her immediately since I saw her as an underdog. I also enjoyed the way that Bobbi seemed to have a spice for life even after all she had been through. While it may take her a while to figure out that she cannot have the picture perfect life no matter what, she does figure it out and seeing her develop and learn from her mistakes was truly entertaining.

Trey is a character I absolutely adored in the first story and was excited to see premier in A Shot Of Sultry. He has a unique wit and charm to him that draws woman including myself. While his charming ways may seem to be a facade to get laid to some, he genuinely cares about everyone, which is refreshing to see. He still has a certain male arrogance to him, which I look for in a alpha male but it is subtle and he can surely talk a girl like Bobbi out of her pants.

Both the personal and the relationship development of both characters in this book held me captive throughout the story. Add this to the introduction of some interesting secondary characters and this author has a winner. While having read the previous story enhanced this story, it was not necessary to enjoy it. Not only would I recommend this story to others, I have already and would suggest anyone who wants a good story they want to curl up with at the end of a long day.

I’m Helena and I’m no delicate flower, my rough touch making former paranormal lovers cry. I’m looking for someone big and strong and preferably not a wolf, especially not that alpha wolf I have stalking me.

I’m not attracted to him — no matter how wide his shoulders or how high his pain tolerance. I’m not that foolish. Lasting relationships between wolves and vampires are forbidden, and this male has the gleam of forever in his wild eyes. He is determined to make me his mate and that, I know, will break the fragile peace between our species.

There’s a thin, blood-red line between enemies and lovers. I’m about to cross it.

Forbidden love between two warring factions, what’s hotter than that?

Helena is having a tough time finding a mate. To say she gets a little aggressive in the bedroom is an understatement. She likes to draw blood and go for it hard and fast. So when a sexy wolf pads into her life and her soul she finds it hard to say no, in fact, all she can say is yes, yes, yes! But should she? When this one wolf, this very shifter, is in fact supposed to be wed to her best friend.

This is the second story in a set, though as the author proclaims, it can be read alone. It’s hot – there’s a good, hefty dose of sex – short, violent and also romantic. Ms Sax does a good job of describing the characters and Helena and her wolf, Marrock, were pretty clear to me from the outset.

There are a few inconsistencies with descriptions Helena gives about herself, her heart mainly, I didn’t think vampires had beating hearts, in fact she says so herself ‘My nonbeating heart aches’, yet she has a pulse, blood, her heart races when her lover makes her excited. It would have made her more vamp like without these elements. I liked her though, and I enjoyed the first person voice she had.

Some of the sex is shifter sex, so if you’re not into heroines clinging onto super-hairy backs this might not be for you, though I found it okay; he’d only half-shifted when she humped him. There is some conflict, a bit of scrapping and fighting, but not loads and it does add to the story.

The book switches between the hero and heroine telling their side of the story. I enjoyed Helena’s version best, mainly because I enjoyed her descriptions of Marrock, though I did like the way his wolf lived inside him, how he refers to it. That gave him an extra dimension.

If you like paranormal sex scenes and a bit of love angst between a wolf and a vampire you might just find this is a quickie for you.

She glanced at his mouth, then immediately regretted it. Lust slammed into her belly as wicked memories of what his firm lips had done to her surfaced. Those unwanted memories collided into a kaleidoscope of naked skin, harsh moans and multiple orgasms. Even now, she swore she could still feel his rough hands urging her hips, spreading her legs, gripping her bottom. Could imagine his mouth on hers, or better yet, between her thighs.
Hudson smiled. A smug, satisfying smile that snapped her out of her sexual spell and reminded her exactly why breaking things off with him had been the right decision. TJ’s just an ordinary fourteen year old kid with extraordinary problems at home and school: A broken up family from his parents’ bitter divorce, evil bullies almost every afternoon, failing grades, boring classes, snobby girls, mean teachers, cut from basketball tryouts, few friends. Life is rough for TJ Cockrell.

And then that mysterious little green book had to go and throw him into the past. And not just any past, but into the untamed forbidding forests of 1802 eastern Tennessee along with the savage Indians, wild beasts, bloodthirsty robbers, backwoods ruffians, and log cabin living! Yup, it’s definitely not 2011 Knoxville anymore.

And he thought his present life was bad news! But TJ’s adventures are only beginning. Along the way, he fights off killer beasts and bandits and braves, gains a world of confidence in himself, finds his first real love, and meets a fantastic frontier family who really has it together. When he returns to the present, he’s a brand new person––ready to defeat deadly robbers in his own home, beat the bullies at school, win the girl, gain friends, and make great grades. He even gets his family back together again. Sort of. In the end, the little green book is really cool. And TJ can’t wait to go on another action-packed adventure into the perilous past!

Imagine being fourteen and unpopular at school. Many have had to go through that torture, the abuse, the ridicule, and the daily troubles. T.J. is a struggling 14-year-old. He’s upset about his parents’ divorce and the fact that him mom and sister—his best friend—moved away. He’s doing poorly in school and gets bullied.

He goes back to early nineteenth century Tennessee and experiences the wild times and people of that era. Danger is everywhere. T.J. faces wild animals and people out to hurt the innocent. Then he meets a kind man who takes him in and allows him to stay with him and his family. At their homestead, T.J. becomes one of the family and learns lessons about hard work, survival, and true familial and community closeness. He even has a romance with a girl who is down-to-earth. His experiences change him. He can no longer take the coward’s way out, not when others are depending on him.

When he goes back to his present, two killers have broken into his home. It’s interesting what he does, how he faces them. It’s also interesting how he faces his bully at school and the new girl.

This is a book about personal growth, but it’s presented in an entertaining, adventure-filled way. Sometimes there was a lot of telling instead of showing, but it was still an emotional read. T.J.’s character is well developed. The world of the past is drawn well. Readers of time travels and historical or coming of age books will probably like this one.

According to legend, King Arthur is supposed to return when Britain needs him most. So why does a man claiming to be the once and future king suddenly appear in Los Angeles?

This charismatic young Arthur creates a new Camelot within the City of Angels to lead a crusade of unwanted kids against an adult society that discards and ignores them. Under his banner of equality, every needy child is welcome, regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, or gang affiliation.

With the help of his amazing First Knight, homeless fourteen-year-old Lance, Arthur transforms this ragtag band of rejected children and teens into a well-trained army—the Children of the Knight. Through his intervention, they win the hearts and minds of the populace at large, and gain a truer understanding of themselves and their worth to society. But seeking more rights for kids pits Arthur and the children squarely against the rich, the influential, and the self-satisfied politicians who want nothing more than to maintain the status quo.

Can right truly overcome might? Arthur’s hopeful young knights are about to find out, and the City of Angels will never be the same.

King Arthur, the once and future king, returns to this world to establish a new Camelot, this time within the City of the Angels. His knights are unwanted children and teens whom society has thrown away. Arthur rescues them from the streets, welcoming all, regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, or gang affiliation, to join him under his banner of equality. He leads this band of unwanted children on a crusade to save their city from the adults who would use them, ignore them, and mistreat them, as they work to maintain the status quo.

Michael Bowler has written a very powerful novel which strikes at the heart of the problems faced by society not only in Los Angeles, but all around the country. Those without power are nearly always trampled and children have less power than any. As Arthur says, “According to the laws of adults, art not children considered to be as adults when they do something wrong, but not when they do something right?”

Bowler portrays King Arthur with genuine humanity. It is fun to watch as the children, especially Lance, educate him about all the changes which have taken place since his first life. And the Children of the Knight are a mixed group with different ages, races, social background, sexual orientation, and gang experiences. But what they have in common is much more important than any differences. Arthur is able to teach them the code of chivalry and instill in them a sense of hope that they can make a difference in their world. I really enjoyed seeing how these abandoned children grow and how they are able to find their own strengths and sense of self-worth.

Personally, as an educator, I was most struck by the way in which Arthur is able to teach and how eager the children are to learn from him, children for whom the educational system has failed and failed miserably. As Jenny, a teacher, tells Arthur, “That’s what’s wrong with our school system, with our one-size-fits-all, group mentality, in this country. Their individual needs have to be met. That’s what they’ve been missing, especially a kid like Lance, who never had anyone before you.”

I have rated this book as 14+ because of the descriptions of what some of the children have to endure to survive on the street. Bowler is very honest in his portrayal of these children, and his portrayals are intense and heart-rending.

This story takes its readers on a fantastic voyage of learning and hope. If adults could read this and take it to heart, we would have a very different world. And for those young adults who read this wonderful fantasy, Bowler would, I think, have you know that you too can be a Child of the Knight wherever you are. Each of us can make a difference and together our combined strength will right the wrongs.

Of course, treachery abounds; just another normal day at Randy’s office.

Randolph C. Aloysius is a Central City private eye who is hired to recover a missing statue. The case turns nasty and Randy’s employer assigns him a bodyguard, Faster Frederica, an X-rated Troll. I enjoyed the description of the traffic jam they end up in on the way to a victim’s apartment as I think that the description captures both the city and the tone of the novel. “The traffic ground almost to a halt here, what with Goblins pushing handcarts down the middle of the road, Trolls sprawled on the sidewalk panhandling, Gremlins lifting purses, Ogres hawking handbags, Fairies flaunting flower arrangements, and Leprechauns who obviously hadn’t been home since yesterday, weaving and dancing through the crowd, singing off-key at the top of their considerable lungs, ignoring any differences between sidewalk and thoroughfare.” Randy has his work cut out for him and before he knows it, he is on his way to the swamps of Venus.

R. J. Hore has written a very enjoyable fantasy crime story with a hard-boiled detective. The plot moves quickly with a number of twists and turns so that Randy has to work hard to stay ahead of the game. He is aided, or at times hampered, by not only Faster, but also Miss Vickky, a Hobgoblin senior citizen, and a teenage Goblin named Scotty. I found myself liking all four of these characters, and it was fun to follow the dynamics between them. Hore’s descriptions of Venus after the Wizards have terraformed it are also amazing, and frightening enough that I never want to go there in person.

I did find it a bit annoying to have every chapter start with a paragraph beginning “I don’t like . . .not since. . .” and end with, “But I digress.” It is true that those paragraphs add color and definition to Randy’s character and life, but I still found the repetitive pattern to be a bit formulaic. However, that really didn’t distract me from a very enjoyable read.

If you like classic crime novels in the noir tradition, then why not read Dial M for Mudder which gives a fun fantasy twist to this genre with interesting characters and a fast moving plot.
