Marisa is a witch. Nolan is a cop – and a skeptic of all things supernatural. When Marisa’s vision helps Nolan find a missing girl, he puts her on the suspect list. But when he searches her home, he not only finds that she’s innocent, he discovers she shares his interest in BDSM. In a small town it’s almost impossible for Nolan to find a good play partner, and Marisa is the perfect woman. But Nolan can’t pretend to believe in her psychic gifts even though the sex is definitely magical.

Marisa had given up on ever finding a Dom, but now one has found her. When he ties her up he’s the kind of hot she’s dreamed about, but outside the bedroom there are plenty of challenges confronting a skeptic and a witch. Marisa and Nolan seem incompatible, and neither the Goddess nor hard logic offer any solutions unless they discover that two opposites can make the perfect team.

What’s a witch to do when her visions land her in the middle of a police investigation and right into the lap of a detective with a kinky side?

Marisa is a computer geek and a witch with her own way of looking at the world. Visions plague her occasionally and when she tries to use one to help a missing child, she encounters Nolan. A detective on the case, Nolan is not a fan of supposed psychics and even less a fan of someone who was wandering the woods in the buff. He is hooked by Marisa’s beauty and despite his doubts, finds himself at her door. Marisa is a closet submissive and his dominant side responds in kind.
It contains cialis generic uk allicin and it increases blood flow to erectile tissues of male reproductive organ and so, cause penile erection during sexual stimulation. Diagnosis To diagnose bipolar I disorder in adolescents, criteria are used for adults (DSM-IV), except that: Mania must be present. cheap viagra from uk
I liked Marissa for her inner geek. She is a witch, following her own path. It smarts that people think she is a flake, but she stays true to the voice of the Goddess when it speaks to her. Rituals from physical pleasure are what strikes the inner core of her being and as she and Nolan get better acquainted, she becomes even more aware that their relationship is inspiring deeper visions and connection with the Goddess.

Nolan is a detective with a kinky side that comes alive as he tries to figure out what makes Marisa tick. He can’t quite come to the decision that she has any kind of psychic gifts but is undoubtedly aroused by her presence. Showing up on her doorstep after the investigation, the two become lovers but there is some friction. He can’t accept her as a witch. He is a man that only sees what is in front of him and what he sees, he wants to master.

The fun part about this story is the friction between Nolan and Marisa. He won’t see her for what she is, but only as a woman who is dying to be submissive as a foil to his masculine dominance. There were a few points during the book where I felt it was a little too easy the way Marisa fell into his arms and became a docile, pillow at his feet submissive. If ever there were a cozy version of a witchy BDSM tale, this would be it. There was just enough conflict to make it a bit lively, but not enough to send the sheets blazing until the very last portion of the book.

As the relationship continues, the conflict escalates and so does the sexy side of the story. Out of the blue, Nolan shows up with a bag of groceries and his homemade bondage kit. That was very creative. I can always appreciate a man who knows how to use clothes pins and candle wax in just the right way. All in all, I enjoyed the book for the Goddess aspects as well as the light kink.

If you are looking for a light read with some elements of BDSM, suspense and a sexy witch, then this just might be the summer read you are looking for.

Telepath and succubus-in-training Ella Hustad’s fate changes the day she discovers her survival hinges on the slip of a vampire’s fang. It’s a sensation that both terrifies her and excites. Accepting Dominic Sebastian, the vampire governor of the eastern quadrant, as her savior might work for her body but she’s not sure if the rest of her is up to the challenge. His blissfully silent mind, his metallic gaze and the feel of his fangs is all she’ll ever need… but is it what she wants?

While on the hunt to save an unregistered active blood benefactor, Dominic falls under the hypnotic charm of Ella’s blood. But that’s not the only attraction. Desire, explosive and unrestrained, forges an unexpected bond between them. When another vampire wants Ella dead, Dominic must find a way to protect her or risk losing the one woman who can satisfy all of his fantasies.

What’s a girl got to do to get a little attention around here? Apparently, having the blood of a benefactor and the powers of a succubus will more than do the trick. Ella has both attributes covered in spades and lucky for her, her soul mate is the vampire who finds her before she explodes. Yep, explodes! After a benefactor is “activated” they have a very short window of time in which to either relieve the pressure by donating blood or having sex…lots and lots of sex! That’s where Dominic comes in but don’t worry, he’s more than up to the task of protecting this very special benefactor.

The whole idea of benefactors and succubae, as well as the rolls they play in the vampire community, was new to me and it quickly caught and kept my attention. Ella is just coming into her powers and doesn’t quite have the control she needs just yet. The results are stimulating to say the least.

The chemistry and attraction between Ella and Dominic is pretty hot but that’s not the whole story. Someone is secretly inducing unregistered benefactors but not for the benefit of everyone. It doesn’t take the good guys long to figure out who it is but I was very impressed with how they deal with those who don’t follow the vampire protocol.

I was a little disappointed to note some editing issues but the story was interesting enough to keep my reading to satisfying end of Ella and Dominic’s story. It’s not the last we’ll hear of them, though, I’m sure.

This is obviously an ongoing story and Ms. De Paulao set up the sequel with several delicious teasers. If you think you’ve read everything there is to know about vampires, Addicted to Fang may surprise you.

Author Interview: G.J. Swenson

Long and Short Reviews welcomes  G. J. Swenson, whose debut novel Occupant was recently released.   Occupant is the first book of the Compromised Agency trilogy, to be followed by Resident and Uninvited Guest.

In this series, he started with an incident he thought was interesting. He filled it with characters who were everyday people and wanted to develop them in a number of different ways.

“I wanted to show that there can be good and evil in us all. Good people can make bad choices and can be stuck in the decisions they have made,” he explained.  “Said another way, bad people can often be very likable people who have made some bad choices. I thought about what circumstances would motivate them and put them where they were. I wanted to show that people on the same’team’ or side of an issue can have very different motivations than the head of the team or the other teammates. I also wanted to show that ordinary people, when pushed into a corner can change drastically to preserve their lives. That change can be permanent.”

He has started a spin-off using one of the characters from Occupant and Uninvited Guest.  The new book allows that character to finally deal with what happens in the trilogy. He’s also started a book set twenty years in the future, in a very different America.

“How did you come up with the titles to your books?” I wondered.

“I tried to describe, in some clever way the focus of the book.  Occupant was named for the indiscriminate attack on an innocent person who was occupying the home of another.  Resident followed the occupation format, but focused upon the fact that there was a traitor within the residing personnel infrastructure.  Uninvited Guest describes the surprise move that a character makes.”

Gary has always found that he can form his ideas best while writing. As a young romantic, he wrote poetry. He wrote op-ed pieces to argue social viewpoints and wrote a community newsletter to promote unity and share information in a new housing development. He went through college in his late 30s and took a very heavy course-load to speed his completion. Through many semesters he found he was required to complete a term paper a week.

“What I discovered was that the writing not only came easy, but it also relaxed me,” he confessed. “I was in the beginning of the end of my marriage when my (then) father-in-law told me of his paranoid experience at a rental house.  I went home the same night and started to write in ernest.”

Occupant was the most complex book of the trilogy and, in that regard, it was the most difficult.  It required establishing many characters and settings.

“It was a project that helped me get through a divorce and discover a side of myself I did not know. I fought for its life for many years,” he said.  “Writing Resident was very different experience.  The story is of a different timbre. I wanted to continue developing the complexity of the plot and the differing motivations of the characters. But for me Resident was more of a thrill ride with high energy and non-stop action.  I brought some quirky characters into the spotlight for fun. In Uninvited Guest, I was required to do a very different type of research, since it was my first real experience at using multiple unfamiliar settings that I had to make come alive. I really enjoyed the experience.  I want to go to Prague and Moscow to see how I did!”

” What is your work schedule like when you are writing?” I asked.

“I’m at my best in the early morning.  I am usually awake 4-4:30amwithout an alarm and write for an hour before I have to get ready for work. It is when the house and the requirements of the day are still asleep.  Thoughts of my story will saturate my day, and I often find myself writing notes by the side of the road or speaking into the notes app on my iphone. I remember when I first started writing Occupant. The family had one compaq computer.  We were home-schooling our children, and by the time I got home from work my children were at play.  My son had discovered the program, The Oregon Trail, and I would often find him fighting dysentery, a snake bite or having some critical problem with his Conestoga. He reminded me recently how irritated it made him when I would pull rank and take over the keyboard after work.”

“Have you ever eaten a crayon?” I asked.

“I did not eat the crayon, but I managed to get myself into quite a lot of trouble with them.  We had  ceiling lights in our 1950’s  era house.  Like today’s lights, the bulbs were mounted to the ceiling. There was a translucent, yet foggy glass bowl that hung from three brass chains to soften the light from the bulb.  I don’t remember how old I was, but I laid in my bed with my yellow and green box of 64 colors of crayons, carefully chose a few- shades of primary subtractive colors red, blue and yellow, broke them in half and threw them up into the bowl.  I watched the crayons melt and the colors blend into new colors, ending up as near black when the show was over. My artistic moment was rewarded with a spanking and an hour at the sink scraping and cleaning the melted wax.”

Finally, I asked, “What is a talent you wish you had, but don’t?”

“Music.  I would love to be able to play music and harmonies as I can hear them in my head.  I love the violin, but I find my greatest accomplishment in playing has been the nights when an ambulance doesn’t show up at my door to help the person my neighbors believe is in pain.”

Rancher Dewar O’Donnell is just an old-fashioned cowboy at heart, and he can’t wait to reenact the historic Chisholm Trail ride with his buddies. The trial-run cattle drive for a reality TV show sounds like a great time—until H.B. McKay pulls up in her slick red sports car…

Haley McKay is a feisty, high-powered businesswoman with the power suit and stiletto heels to prove it. She’s keen to research her company’s hot new idea for a reality TV show—but mount up with a bunch of modern-day cowboys? Are they kidding?

It’s too late to back out now, so Haley sets out to prove that it will take more than snakes, storms, and stampedes to make her back down.

Opposites attract, especially when there’s a ride involved!

Carolyn Brown’s books never cease to entertain me. I know I’ll get a great read that flows and draws me in from page one. Cowboy Seeks Bride is no different. Once I started this book, I had to find out what happened next.

Opposites are said to attract and in this book that’s very true. But even the most opposite people have common ground. Neither Dewar or Haley are about to back down. Both are headstrong. But he’s a whole lot country and she’s very much a city girl. Ms Brown writes these characters so well, I felt like I was right there with them on the reenactment ride. I felt the dust, the heat of the sun and the sounds of the wilderness. Pretty cool.

Haley isn’t really country girl. She’s there because she’s getting out of her comfort zone. I rooted for her to find her HEA because well, if she could handle the ride, then she deserved the prize. I liked that she wasn’t perfect. She’s got her issues and was feisty, which made me want to see her succeed.

Dewar is a great kind of sexy. He’s strong, determined and has her best interests at heart, even when she drives him berserk. A great hero.

If you’re looking for a book that’s filled with moxie and has a hero who is drool-worthy, then you need to read Cowboy Seeks Bride.

Written with the same witty humor as the other novels within the Deep in the Heart of Texas setting, this one lacked the normal three dimensional characterization that I’ve come to know in Ms. Lane’s novels. It still had a lot of fun and humor, but the characters fell just a bit flat for me. The conflicts didn’t feel as strong, and at times, I also found myself skimming some of the pages. I enjoyed the story, loved the attraction between Jenna and Beau, but had hoped for a little more depth to them.

Still, the overall story had my emotions all over the place. I laughed, I got mad, I wanted to tear up a few times, and that’s what kept me rooting for everyone to their HEA. If you enjoy a fun contemporary romance about finding your place back home, why not do a little flirting with Texas of your own and snag a copy of this book?

Arabella Wyatt, author of the Steampunked Pirates, uses fantasy to take a clinical look at the nature of superstition and the dangers of fundamentalist believers rejecting scientific truth. In doing so, she creates a fable for our times, showing how such beliefs will result in the downfall of humanity.

Through three different ages from 31BC through 1916 to the future, the Death Ship stalks its prey. Humans’ own nature invite the ship and its skeletal crew to capture the dead. Egyptian versus Romans; World War 1 Battle of Jutland; and religious battles of the future engaged my interest and I read on to find out what the finale of each story. The skeletal Captain never knows when to give up and returns to the fray in the future and into space.

Born out of ignorance, banished by science and reborn through a different type of ignorance the Death Ship sails on, harvesting it’s dead which in turn destroys the knowledge of humans to fight against it. Who will win, humans or the dead? Until the end of the third book I didn’t know which would overcome the other, but it was well worth reading the whole three books to find out.

Sylvie’s more human librarian than half-blood Fae princess and she definitely prefers books to men. Then, she learns her unwanted Lykae fiancée is marrying someone else. If she doesn’t stop the wedding, the Fae will resume the border war with the Werewolf nation. A high-handed Lykae security guard blocks her every move, and when her plans go awry, she’s kidnapped, stripped, and bound for his pleasure.

Caleb the Cold, King of the Lykae, will do anything to make his younger brother’s wedding special–even pretend he’s a security guard and kidnap his brother’s former fiancée. Punishing her is pure pleasure, until he realizes she’s his mate. Now he needs to woo the woman he’s tormented to the edge of madness, but is it too late to claim her heart, and make her his?

I love steamy romance novels that feature sexy wolf shifters, so this book was obviously right up my alley. That alone drew me in and made me choose this book, but once I got started reading this one, it wasn’t long until I realized how lucky I was in my choice. What an entertaining and sexy book this turned out to be. It had a strong plot , engaging characters and told an endearing tale of romantic turmoil that really grabbed hold and pulled me into the story. Action, scorching hot sex, some surprising intrigue and plenty of plot twists, this book had it all.

The author managed to pack a lot of meaningful story into this fast paced book. It opens up with a bang, Sylvie (a half Fae princess) is trying desperately to stop her errant fiancee from marrying another woman. She’s no longer interested in being wife to that worthless Lykae, but she knows this will be a slap in the face of her half-brother, the Fae king. Sylvie finds herself at odds with an arrogant security guard, who takes her prisoner and proceeds to torment her. What the reader finds out is that this is no security guard, instead it is Caleb, king of the Lykae, and he will stop at nothing to make sure that his brothers wedding is perfect. In all fairness to Caleb, he has been sorely mislead by his lying brother into thinking Sylvie is a greedy skank. So sexy king Caleb thinks Sylvie is a trouble making vixen and he treats her kinda badly, even though he is seriously attracted to her. He holds her prisoner in his private tower where he toys with her by playing lusty sex games that include some light bondage and spanking. Meanwhile he is slowly coming to realize that she just may be his mate. He starts out by insulting her with an offer to be his concubine and by the time she has escaped he is thinking about forever and knows he has done a lot of things he has to make up for.

The plot was complex with a lot of misunderstandings coming into play. The author threw in some suspense that livened up the story and kept it moving toward a rather climactic ending. Caleb and Sylvie find themselves in a dangerous situation with a villain that came out of left field for me. It was a total surprise, but it led to a tense and vital point in the storyline.

I liked the characters in the story. Sylvie had suffered a lot in her life and always felt not quite good enough as a result. The most striking thing about her was that she held onto her courage to do the right thing. Caleb was a hot alpha, but a flawed one. That’s the best kind. I wanted to bash him over the head for some of the things he did to Sylvie. In the end he stepped up as a true hero, though, in a very sweet way.

Now, to the juicy parts … the love scenes. This book is an erotic romance with some very explicit scenes that are not for the faint of heart. The descriptions are more vivid and detailed than most. I enjoyed the scenes with the light bondage and the spanking, finding them titillating in fact. The sex scenes where Caleb is shifted into his primal state were more than I really appreciated, but I read on cause there was no putting the book down at that point. My curiosity was definitely aroused and I simply had to know. Truth told, I found that scene to be well written and important to the romantic plot.

This book, is above all, a romance and the author created two unique characters in Caleb and Sylvie. They started off as antagonists, who enjoyed playing some kinky games, and in the end they found themselves in a fight for survival. The plot that surrounds this romance had an ingenious twist and this reader found herself wanting to see more of this fantastical world. It was a great story from Kryssie Fortune, a talented voice in the wonderful world of erotic romance and I look forward to hearing more from this author.

A recommended paranormal book.

When the tribal leader is found stabbed to death, the new leader thinks Enga did it. Expulsion and certain death loom. Enga must find the murderer to save her tribe — and herself.

How do you solve a murder when you’re the prime suspect, your tribe is on the brink of starvation, and time is running out almost as quickly as the list of people you can trust?

Enga Dancing Flower has struggled to fit in with her adoptive family for years. Her desire to be fully accepted is evident early on in this story, and her refusal to give up on this dream made my heart ache. I was surprised to see how quickly Enga and her twin sister reveal themselves to be well-rounded individuals whose emotional bond surpasses their strikingly different habits and traits. Ms. George clearly invested a lot of time into developing her main characters, and her hard work pays off when Enga’s sensitive, intelligent, and kind personality shines through the very first paragraph.

It was difficult to remember the names, histories, and family ties of the nearly 30 men, women, and children of Enga’s tribe, many of whom were briefly introduced early on and then not mentioned again for several chapters. I would have preferred to see a detailed family tree included after the acknowledgements so that I could quickly refresh my memory about how certain individuals were related to one another.

Despite my occasional confusion, I wished this book would never end. Ms. George described Enga’s world in such vivid detail I felt like I’d travelled back through time and was experiencing the triumphs and tragedies of Hamapa people alongside them. The beginning of each chapter includes a short quote about what the scientific community thinks life was like for the various hominid species back then, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how this information was incorporated into her story in sometimes unexpected ways. While I was satisfied with the ending, I’m hoping that the author’s decision to leave a few key questions unanswered was a subtle hint that we will hear from these characters again soon.

Death in the Time of Ice is a gripping mystery, and it’s the best example of prehistoric fiction I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves either genre.

In the City of Brotherly Love, nobody knows a thing about Emmie Cade, a young widow who “appeared from nowhere,” and in the blink of an eye was engaged to Leo Fairchild, a middle-aged bachelor with a fortune. However, as her marriage date approaches, Emmie’s mother-in-law to be, the ailing, autocratic Claire Fairchild, receives anonymous letters. They suggest, none too subtly, that there’s a great deal to learn about the mysterious young woman, none of it good, and much of it involving the violent deaths of the men in her life.

Enter Amanda Pepper who, after completing her day of teaching English at Philly Prep, now moonlights as a P.I. along with C.K. Mackenzie, former homicide detective, current graduate student at Penn. The two of them are hired by Mrs. Fairchild to find out who the charming but evasive Emmie Cade really is. At thirty-two, the young woman has changed her address and name more often than some women change nail polish—and deliberately or not, she’s provided no clues or access to her past.

For Amanda, becoming C.K. Mackenzie’s investigative partner is an exhilarating change from the politics and problems of the new school term, and a welcome distraction from the ordeal of meeting her own prospective in-laws. She’s determined to prove herself an able investigator by ferreting out Emmie Cade’s secrets, but almost immediately, instead of looking at events of the past, she’s forced to deal with the here and now—including murder.

Amanda Pepper is back again, and I am certainly glad. Claire and Present Danger is a wonderful cozy mystery written with wit, humor, wonderful characters, and a twisted and convoluted plot. Amanda Pepper teaches English at Philly Prep, and she also moonlights as a P.I. with her fiancée, C.K. Mackenzie. Amanda is a first rate teacher with a creative approach to teaching and a real understanding of her students. She is just learning how to be a P. I., as C.K., a former homicide detective turned graduate student, helps her to learn the profession.

Gillian Roberts has developed both Amanda and C.K. into complex characters. They are people whom I really care about. Listening to Amanda’s interior monologue about what she should wear to meet C.K.’s parents, while she is also monitoring her classes is fascinating. When she gets caught up in a case, trying to do a background check, she begins to doubt herself. Robert’s humor and wit are clearly present as Amanda thinks, “Perhaps it was time to restrict myself to dangling participles and pronoun case. It was possible my mission on earth was not solving crimes, but disabusing people from saying, “He invited John and myself.” Or, “Between you and I.” Surely preserving the Mother Tongue was as important a public service as doing background checks. On the other hand, we needed additional income, and pronoun usage wasn’t going to generate it.”

The plot is well crafted and I am again impressed by how Amanda’s life as a teacher parallels her work on the case, as a crisis at school provides her with the insight she needs to solve the murder. There are plenty of suspects, and the twists and turns will keep readers guessing until the end.

The novel is filled with lovable characters who support Amanda. First and foremost is her fiancée C.K., who always finds time for her even as he is trying to study for his Ph.D. in criminology. Amanda’s sister, Beth, is instrumental in finding clues, even if she isn’t always aware of what she is doing. In this novel, we also meet C.K.’s parents whom I liked nearly as quickly as Amanda. The interaction between the two families, C.K.’s and Amanda’s is handle with great wit and tact.

Claire and Present Danger is the eleventh novel in this series. It stands alone as a wonderful cozy, and it is also enriched by the earlier novels as the characters grow and develop. If you are looking for a great cozy mystery with a plucky, if at times scattered, detective, then I can recommend not only this novel, but the entire series.
