To prevent three royal dukes from marrying their way onto the throne, heroic, selfless agents for the crown will be dispatched…to seduce the dukes’ intended brides. These wickedly debauched rakes will rumple sheets and cause a scandal. But they just might fall into their own trap…

After he’s blamed for a botched assignment during war, former cavalry officer Rhys Warrick turns his back on “honor.” He spends his nights in brothels doing his best to live down to the expectations of his disapproving family. But one last mission could restore the reputation he’s so thoroughly sullied. All he has to do is seduce and ruin Miss Olivia Symon and his military record will be cleared. For a man with Rhys’s reputation, ravishing the delectably innocent miss should be easy. But Olivia’s honesty and bold curiosity stir more than Rhys’s desire. Suddenly the heart he thought he left on the battlefield is about to surrender…

Trading favors and wagering against an admitted rake was Olivia’s first mistake. The second was falling for him.

As a first born wealthy heiress from an untitled family, Olivia’s prospects for a husband are slim and her social awkwardness and lanky physique don’t help matters either. However, she may not have to search far since one of the royal dukes has made his interest known, but first she must be “interviewed”. Olivia is not so naive to be unaware that the royal duke’s real interest is mostly in her untouched state and fertile future to secure his own seat on the throne. It’s all politics, but for the sake of her family’s future and mostly that of her sisters, Olivia may not have much choice in her match with the aging duke. That is until temptation walks in upsetting her quiet life and challenges her to become a knowledgeable virgin.

Lord Rhys Warrington lives a wastrel existence after a defeat in battle leaves him and his two best mates mired in scandal. Three years after the offending event, Rhys now finds himself faced with the proposition of a lifetime to restore his and his family’s honor. But it will mean seduction of the wrong kind of girl – a virgin. As an admitted libertine and rake without any gentlemanly qualities, Rhys should have no problem bedding the unknowing chit and ruining her chances of a royal dukedom. It is Rhys’ conscience, however, that poses the problem and controls even his most basic of instincts especially his physical responses. When it becomes clear someone else is threatening Olivia’s physical well-being, but with deadly intentions, Rhys must decide his priorities and what his true intentions toward the lady are.

A story complete with an overbearing mother, an unlikely romance and a deadly whodunit mystery to solve set in a time where propriety and acceptance in high society were the concerns of the day. However, a Hymen Hunt is underway and there are several players who have a stake, political, vengeful or otherwise, in the outcome. By these twisted circumstances is how our leads meet and their headstrong personalities and brilliant banter kept the story paced perfectly. I really enjoyed the sexual banter and how the whole “knowledgeable virgin” venture led to some very steamy scenes.

Olivia is not the typical heroine in description and I believe Rhys said it best when he described her as “endearingly awkward”. On the other hand, Rhys fits the physical embodiment of a rake perfectly, but with a much deeper side that only comes out when he’s around Olivia. It’s his rakish attitude that makes him charming and frustrating at the same time, but it definitely keeps things interesting. My complaint comes from these two falling for each other too soon and I would have liked to see Olivia’s intelligence shine just a bit more by her holding off on Rhys’ advances longer.

I believe the author duo did a fabulous job taking historically realistic events, people, places, and things and twisting them in their own imaginative way. Since we were introduced to three determined rakes in need of reforming and vindication at the beginning of this story, I am eagerly waiting to see what happens with the other two. For all historical romance fans this is definitely one not to be missed.

Can two polar opposites work together to secure Sherlock’s home?

Social worker Wilhelmina Walker did not rise to her position as head of the Children’s Welfare Agency by taking needless chances. When Michael Ryce, a reckless and arrogant detective who’s never met a rule he didn’t break, attempts to adopt ten-year-old T.C. Sherlock, Willie is outraged. T.C. needs stability and a worthy role model, not a man who lives to break the rules.

Determined to give him the childhood he never had, Ryce is infuriated when Willie refuses to consider his application. But when a crisis forces them to work together to save T.C., Willie and Ryce realize that not only do they love T.C., they just might be starting to love each other.

Wilhelmina is a social worker doing her best in difficult circumstances. Detective Michael Ryce is a constant thorn in her side. Helping to find foster children their perfect homes isn’t a piece of cake, but Wilhelmina is determined to do her best for the kids, and when things don’t work out it’s Michael she calls to help sort things out. When T.C. Sherlock runs away again, however, Michael’s heart is stirred and he promises the boy he can come live with him. Wilhelmina is outraged and determined there has to be a better solution than the brash, arrogant young detective. They constantly clash and the pages sizzle with their interactions.

With two such determined, stubborn minded main characters I knew this would be an really good book, and I wasn’t disappointed. Both Wilhelmina and Michael are forces to be reckoned with and Ms. DeVita doesn’t hold back with either of them as they interact. Coming from different viewpoints, both Michael and Wilhelmina in their own ways are desperate to love and care for T.C, and neither are willing to give any ground when it comes to the foster boy. Despite the story sometimes feeling somewhat dated, it’s still a wonderful tale of two people coming together – albeit kicking, shoving and dragging their feet every inch of the way – and I was delighted to devour every page.

This character driven novel is a reprint from a Silhouette Romance, and even though it is safe to share with other women in your family (older and younger) it still has a bit of spice and a ton of sexual tension. But it is the characters here, Wilhelmina, Michael and T.C in particular, who will steal your hearts and have you up long into the night turning the pages compulsively. A wonderful, heartwarming and addictive story.

The Midwest lies in complete ruins after a catastrophic disaster kills tens of thousands and leaves hundreds of thousands injured. Nicholas Keller emerges out of the devastation as a shining light of hope for all. But his newfound fame comes with a price that his aunt will not let him pay. They flee into the shadows in order to protect his secret. However, as Nicholas begins his sophomore year at his fifth school in five years, strange and unexpected things begin to happen. He soon tumbles into a web of doomed love, extraordinary talents and a secret past, which threatens the lives of everyone he cares about. It’s up to Nicholas to confront the truth, even if it means his own death.

Thus, many believe that the treatment can indirectly reduce occurrence of women viagra pills impotence in men. Five years following the earthquake that destroyed the Midwest, leaving thousands dead and injured, Nicholas Keller is still on the run, trying to protect his identity. However, when his aunt finally decides to let him settle in and be a normal kid for a change, all of Nicholas’ dreams are starting to come true… but at a price. Will he be willing to sacrifice all he’s ever wanted for the anonymity his aunt so desperately wants for him?

Nicholas Keller is a different sort of boy. After becoming a hero following the great quake on 10-10 five years earlier, he’s been forced into hiding for his own safety. Even though he’s forced to move every year on the same day, he doesn’t let it get him down. Not one to make friends, it’s easier to pick up and go on to the next city and the next life. His character was a nice mix of hero and real boy. He knew his duty and yet, he had his moments of insecurity and rebellion as well. It made for a more realistic Nicholas.

While the story was engaging and the characters interesting, sometimes the writing, mostly the dialogue, fell a bit flat. Although the story is aimed at an older audience, the more simplistic writing style makes it perfect for younger readers in the 12 to 14 age range to cut their teeth on.

Secrets is a novel full of just that – lots and lots of secrets. As they’re slowly revealed to both the reader and Nicholas himself, you’re drawn farther and farther into this new alternate universe that is so familiar and yet very different from our own. Aside from a few issues I had with the author’s style, the novel itself was interesting and engaging and a good read for younger audiences.

Mark and Julia from The Virgin and the Playboy have set the date! They are to be married at The Castillo Las Vegas, where they met on their 1Night Stand. All their family and friends are invited and they have planned a special surprise for their maid of honor and best man.

Karin, Julia’s cousin, a small town librarian, chose family obligations over her dreams of the stars. She loves them all, but wonders when it will be her turn to live as she wishes…if it isn’t too late.

Ray, commercial pilot, is every bit as much a playboy as his brother Mark used to be. He isn’t opposed to finding The One, but fears his brother has collected the only perfect jewel.

What more appropriate gift for these two than a 1Night Stand with a date personally selected for them by Madame Evangeline.

What’s the perfect gift to give to the attendants of your wedding? Well, when you met by way of Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand Service, the answer to that question is easy. You give them the opportunity to meet the perfect partner by arranging a 1Night Stand of their own. But you know what they say about the best laid plans…

Julia and Mark, both of whom were introduced in an earlier tale, are heading to Vegas to get married. Their maid of honor, Julia’s cousin Karin, and best man, Mark’s brother Ray, are among the various family members in attendance. Because of the success of Madame Eve’s pairing of Julia and Mark, they arrange a date for Karin and one for Ray. Each are to contact the service for details after the rehearsal dinner. Karin and Ray, feeling a spark between them, instead follow their own path.

This story was a little different than other 1Night Stands in the series, in that we get a glimpse of what life is like for Julia and Mark before being introduced to the focus couple. For those who read the first book, The Virgin and The Playboy, this will be welcomed. I had not read the first story, but after a glimpse and reading the story of Karin and Ray, I’ll certainly look into it!

There was little in this book I didn’t like. The characters were well defined, the setting was described wonderfully, and the attraction between Karin and Ray was palpable. In a few short pages, the Ms. Richards takes us from initial meeting to blossoming love, and I enjoyed every minute. The sex was hot, and I especially enjoyed the way she allowed us into the thoughts of each character-sometimes switching point of view in the middle of a pivotal moment. It drew me into the scenes as if I was a bystander in the room.

There were only two minor items that kept this story from scoring a perfect 5 stars. One, was a handful of editing errors, including a missing word (and I’d still like to know what the author intended to say). The other was an unanswered question. I don’t believe it’s a spoiler to say the maid of honor and best man spend the evening together, but we never got resolution of the 1Night Stand date. Each was supposed to be set up with someone, but neither chose to make the call for arrangements. Who were they supposed to meet? I was expecting one, or both, to contact Madame Eve, only to find out the person they were with was their chosen date, but it didn’t happen. So what happened to their dates? Madame Eve may not have been directly responsible for this matchup, but it certainly didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story!

I’m a huge fan of the 1Night Stand Series, and this installment was no exception. For a quick, hot, entertaining read, pick up The Virgin and The Best Man. You won’t be disappointed.

Temptation never tasted so good.

Close to the Heat, Book 1

With a chance to win a cooking competition that will advance her career, the last thing food truck chef Pepper Joseph needs is a distraction. Except she’s got a heaping helping of it in the form of fellow chef Darien Priest, the man who broke her heart.

It’s been years, and she tells herself she’s over his betrayal, but to her irritation, she finds she still has an appetite for his steel-gray eyes, clean-shaven head, and sleeve tattoos.

Darien regrets the single, juvenile act that ended it with Pepper, but he’s never found the courage to apologize. Now that they’re in close quarters, something’s steaming and it’s not just the saucepots. One toe-curling kiss proves there’s the potential for more than just a guarded friendship, and he sets out to prove he’s grown into an honorable man.

Until he discovers she’s pulled a seasoning switch that could have ruined one of his dishes. Now it’s on. There’s ten thousand dollars on the line, but if they don’t surrender to another chance at love, one—or both—of their wounded hearts could get singed.

Darien Priest was the competition. He continuously set up his food truck right near Pepper’s and they were competing against each other in a race for a big cash prize – ten thousand dollars worth of it. Having already been burned by the sexy man in the past, Pepper is determined not to place her heart – or trust – in him again. Despite their rocky, complicated past, she’d struck an uneasy, if fiercely contested, truce and beginnings of a friendship. If only the tattooed man wasn’t such a hunk, Pepper could keep her mind on track and not be so distracted by his smoking hot physique. Both Pepper and Darien are determined, stubborn people, the sensual antagonism in and out of the kitchen smolders in this book.

A spicy, enticing romance, this book will appeal to a large crowd. Those who like masterchef, competition cooking shows or just enjoy puttering around the kitchen will find plenty of laughs and enjoyment in watching both Pepper and Darien clash in this cooking-heavy romance. There are mix-ups and retaliations, plenty of conflict and plot to keep the pages burning along at a fast pace. I liked how even though they were both fiercely determined to win the competition, the sexual tension and obvious attraction they both had simmered lightly under the surface until they both reached boiling point. Sparks and tempers both fly – neither character is a shrinking violet – but they could still come together and finally melt like the most decadent of chocolate. Ending the story on a wonderful positive note was just the icing on the cake.

I’d definitely recommend this book and found it a great way to add a bit of heat into an otherwise rainy weekend.

The life of a writer. I am reminded of those memes that have been popping up all over on Facebook. The ones with 6 little boxes with pictures in them that say this is what my mom thinks I do, this is what society thinks I do and so on. I saw a couple for writers not long ago. The boxes are the same.

What my friends think I do. In the first a man is sitting in a folding metal chair and bent over an old fashioned electric typewriter. This struck me as pretty funny. I started writing on an old green manual typewriter, and . . . I use a folding metal chair. (with a nice thick seat pad) (It’s portable!) (The chair not the seat pad, though if it goes with the chair then it would be portable, too)

What my mom thinks I do. This one showed a bunch of people partying and drinking booze out of the bottle. Come on people, really, out of the bottle? In my life as a writer, I don’t write and drink or drink and write. For one thing it’s hard to type drunk. And with deadlines and also being an editor, not a lot of time to party. But I did go to a National Novel Writer’s month wrap party that was a lot of fun, no drinking though.

What society thinks I do. I like this one, LOL Writer in a poet shirt, candle at their side, quill pen in hand. More like standing in line at the bank writing out a scene idea across the back of a deposit slip and onto the next because a plot bunny bit me and it won’t leave me alone until you acknowledge that it’s there. I don’t outline, so plot bunnies and killer rabbits often attack me. I have even written story ideas down my arm when I didn’t have anything else to write on. People tend to edge away from you in these cases.

What my publisher thinks I do. A ginning monkey at an old manual typewriter. Hmm, well I know as an editor I sometimes think what?? When I read something in the slush pile. So I am sure my publisher gets annoyed with me as well. (Yes, I am working on those other books! I swear) We writers can be clowns and stubborn when it comes to our words, though I have learned no word is golden. Toss it in favor a new one, and move onward.

What I think I do. Einstein writing on a blackboard. I think this meme was aimed at new writers. Writing is hard work, it is creative but it’s a business, and when you train yourself to think in business term,s marketing is so much easier, rejection is easier, and editing is easier. No, I no longer think my words don’t stink and are genius. I mean they are, but I (never mind) (LOL) I think I have reached a stage were the words just are, I know the story is solid the words and grammar choices are solid, then I wait to see if others think the story is thumbs up or thumbs down.

And last What I really do. Now I know this one was aimed at the amateur writer, a picture of a computer game of solitaire. So the life of a writer, just a moment I need to close Farmville. I really don’t put a lot of time into online games anymore. If I am in need of a break to sort out plot or too many ideas coming at me, then I set a time limit on it.

Writing is something I have to do, it is an outlet for thoughts, for things swirling in my head that need to be put down on paper. But like anything that we want to be successful at, all kidding aside, a writer needs to make it a habit, set goals and meet them without excuses and distractions. Two things that have always struck me as truth:

If you had a 9 to 5 job you couldn’t just decide not to go into work on days when you just didn’t feel it. Writing is the same way, you sit you write. Train yourself to do it on command.

But the winds change when a musclebound drifter named Lawson struts into town exuding danger and an undercurrent of raw sexual energy. Convinced he’s the key to her escape, Montana makes it a priority to capture his attention.

Anger and darkness have consumed Lawson for years, leading him back to the town that robbed him of his childhood. His plans for vengeance are simple—find the stolen money, kill the one responsible for the demise of his family and destroy the town. He didn’t count on Montana or her will to seduce…both proving impossible to ignore.

Rattling the Cage is a story about a vengeful man hoping to make things right in the only way he knows how, by force. Montana is a nice girl, if a bit rough around the edges, and can’t help but have her head turned by Lawson. They have a great relationship; the dialogue is snappy and the sex hot.

A big chunk of the story is about the sherrif and the townsfolk and what happened years ago. Secrets are spilled, lies are uncovered and things get pretty dicey at times. Thank goodness Lawson turned up when he did!

I would have enjoyed a little more romance and between-the-sheets action for Lawson and Montana. They were a great couple who really sparked off each other and a little more of them getting dirty and sweaty would have been a treat. I was really invested in Montana and wanted her to have her happy after with hunky Lawson, so a little more concentration on their releationship would have been nice, and I’d have loved an epilogue showing them in the future. Sigh, she’s a lucky lady!

All in all a good read, well written and certainly full of twists and turns.

Chris Sinclair broke Erica’s heart. The only woman he has ever loved. Since that awful moment he has spent every waking moment thinking about her and wishing he could have another chance.

Erica cannot forget the love she felt at the hands of Chris, but her memories are plagued by his betrayal after he took her innocence. When they meet again, the attraction is as strong as ever. But Erica refuses to give herself easily to the man who broke her heart.

When Chris’s father is rushed to the hospital, Erica and Chris learn how quickly life can change. Instead of dwelling on the past they move into a future together. But how long can they last? With Erica’s desires increasing, can she find it in her heart to completely trust Chris or will they be doomed to repeat the past?

I loved the first book in this series, Blaze’s Second Chance. This one was no different. As with the first one, Taking His Woman is a second chance at love story. My favorite kind. As the title suggests, Chris Sinclair is taking back the heart that he broke when he scorned the love that Erica unselfishly gave to him.

Erica gave her innocence to Chris, a notorious playboy. Then, afraid of the powerful desire he feels for her, he pushes Erica out of his life by scoffing at her feelings. “It’s just sex”, he told her. Erica was horrified at the way he used her…so she ran. Yet, Chris never forgot the blazing passion they shared.

Despite his brutal betrayal, Erica has stayed true to Chris these last four years. Now, they are reunited and find that the old feelings are still there. After a bit of groveling they give in to those feelings and try to rebuild the relationship that Chris destroyed. But Chris has awakened a dark desire in Erica. A desire that she can’t ignore yet neither can she express to her lover.

I loved this book. I enjoyed how humble the once arrogant Alpha male was in his remorse. He was desperate to win back what he once threw away. Yet, the author never showed him as weak. Nor did Erica ask him to grovel. I liked that. She was a smart gal who saw her chance at the man she wanted. And she took it.

I enjoyed this steamy read. The sex was hot. But it was the fabulous characters and the second chance at love plot that made this book worth reading. Hey, my time is valuable so I’d rather not waste it on a story that’s just about sex. No worries about that with this book. Taking His Woman is a wonderfully tender story.

I’d recommend this book to everyone who likes a little romance with their smexy.

MARDIS GRAS MADNESS by Lynn Shurr

Mardi Gras Madness by Lynn Shurr

When the last of the Christmas decorations are packed away and all the New Year’s Eve champagne consumed, I pity those who live in the north and must face the bleakness of January without the Mardi Gras season. Carnival events begin right after Twelfth Day or Epiphany on January sixth, traditionally the end of the Christmas holidays. After that, most of the country has only Lent looming ahead, but in Louisiana the fun is just beginning.

The Mardi Gras organizations (krewes) choose their kings and queens, usually a prosperous middle-aged businessman matched with one of the pretty young debs who are just coming out into society. Unfortunately, the king is usually decked out in a fake beard and a Renaissance costume complete with white hose, think the Burger King, while his queen will wear a costly gown with a lavish cape. Their court dons fabulous costumes as well, but all must be paid for by the participants in the old tradition. The krewes also pay for the many floats on which members ride in long parades all the while throwing plastic beads, fake dubloons, and trinkets to the crowds along the way. Expensive for them, but so much fun for the rest of us.

What, not invited to the many balls with fanciful themes? The ordinary person can still indulge in the weekly King Cake served at coffee break. Decorated in the Mardi Gras colors of green, purple, and gold, each cake contains a plastic baby, supposedly representing the Christ Child. The person who gets the baby might be proclaimed queen or king for the day, but more likely will be expected to bring next week’s cake for all to enjoy. And yes, sometimes people do hide the baby again to avoid the expense, but I will go out and buy a large pecan praline King Cake any day as long as the season lasts.

In smaller towns such as the one in Mardi Gras Madness, the whole community might pitch in to make the gowns and floats. Anyone who buys a ticket may attend the ball. Farther out in the country, masked riders go door to door begging for the makings of a communal gumbo, especially a live chicken to be chased and captured. Rather than a fancy ball, the dancing is more likely to be accompanied by a Cajun or Zydeco band in the town square.

Regardless, when Fat Tuesday arrives, all the festivities must end at midnight as Lent begins. The fat in Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras in French) refers to cooking oil to be used up, usually by making donuts, before the time of fasting starts. Anything can happen on Mardi Gras Day—and be repented of on the next when good Catholics go to receive a smear of ashes on their foreheads from the priest.

1_21 Mardi Gras Madness smMore Mardi Gras customs exist than I can cover in this short space. I use many of them in my series of books, Mardi Gras Madness, Queen of the Mardi Gras Ball, and the upcomingCourir de Mardi Gras. Anyone who comments on this blog will be entered into a drawing for a free copy of Mardi Gras Madness. Let the revelry begin!

About the Author: 1_21 traditional pose 72Once a librarian, now a writer of romance, Lynn Shurr grew up in Pennsylvania Dutch country. She attended a state college and earned a very impractical B.A. in English Literature. Her first job out of school really was working as a cashier in a burger joint. Moving from one humble job to another, she traveled to North Carolina, then Germany, then California where she buckled down and studied for an M.A. in Librarianship.

New degree in hand, she found her first reference job in the Heart of Cajun Country, Lafayette, Louisiana. For her, the old saying, “Once you’ve tasted bayou water, you will always stay here” came true. She raised three children not far from the Bayou Teche and lives there still with her astronomer husband.

When not writing, Lynn likes to paint, cheer for the New Orleans Saints and LSU Tigers, and take long road trips nearly anywhere. Her love of the bayou country, its history and customs, often shows in the background for her books.

She is the author of the Sinners sports romance series: Goals for a Sinner, Wish for a Sinner, and Kicks for a Sinner. Lynn recently debuted two other titles with L & L Dreamspell, Queen of the Mardi Gras Ball and Mardi Gras Madness. Courir de Mardi Gras is scheduled for Summer, 2013. As everyone in Louisiana knows, Fat Tuesday is a day when anything can happen.

Savannah met a young boy as a child. Then her friend disappeared only to reappear the night before she graduated high school in a dream.

Can she find love and a happily ever after with a sex demon?

On the eve of her high school graduation Savannah has a most decadent dream about a man she calls her angel. Everything is perfect and in her dream they make love. Cairn is an incubus and because of a technicality he’s forbidden from any contact with Savannah for five years. When they finally meet again Cairn woos her, gets to know the real Savannah and draws her out of her shell. The passion that ignited between them that first night rekindles and they struggle to make this heat between them work.

This is an interesting short story with a very fast pace. Savannah and Cairn’s relationship is well fleshed out – though the other subplots seem to race along very quickly in the background. While I feel the book could have done with a bit more detail and a slower pace, it’s easy to get caught up in Savannah and Cairn and the magic surrounding them. Both are clearly meant to be and love each other almost from their first meeting, but there are a number of obstacles they both need to conquer before they can get their happy ending.

This is a fun, quick read with a fair bit of spice and magic, excellent for one of those times when you don’t have long to indulge in a bigger story.
