Marty always believed the lab-grown foods he helped produce were miraculous. But in his childhood home of Lucban, real miracles are occurring: artificial food is being transformed into delicious, sustaining produce. As he visits the home he left behind, the vibrant and colorful festival jerks him into a past he both hungers for and wants to forget.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about this tale was observing how Marty’s friends and relatives reacted to his visit to his hometown. He lived far away and hadn’t been able to come home in a long time. Now that he had a wife and kids, their understanding of who he was as a person needed to be updated. This is something that is common in this scenario, and I was fascinated by how they reacted to the many ways he had changed as well as by how he responded to his parents and neighbors once he realized they still thought of him as the young man he’d been when he first left town many years ago.

I would have preferred to see more world building in this story. There were so many hints about what the future was like that weren’t explained as well as they could have been. Other than knowing that practically all of the food people ate was artificially produced, I didn’t have a good sense of what Marty’s society was like in general. Everything other than the food was described in terms that were simply too generic for me to imagine what it would be like to live in his world.

With that being said, I did enjoy the descriptions of the food people ate. Since Marty worked for a company that produced food in their laboratories, he had a much clearer understanding of what his loved ones were eating than most people would have known. The little comments he made about stuff like how everything was designed to meet all of the nutritional needs of humans only made me more curious about his job and what, exactly, was in their meals.

Milagroso should be read by anyone who has ever read a long list of ingredients on a boxed food item at a grocery store and wondered what some of those terms really meant.

When You Absolutely Have to Write a Song – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Amy Lane who is celebrating the recent release of Paint It Black, the second book in the Behind the Stain series.

When You Absolutely Have to Write a Song

So, by the terms of acceptable use policy, we’re not allowed to copy song lyrics down for our stories. The exceptions are for titles and chapter titles (hence all the chapter titles in Beneath the Stain) and a few words of chorus (so “Jeremy spoke in class today,” for Talker’s Redemption.)

And that’s good—we don’t want to steal from other authors, and pretty much our entire community believes in giving credit where credit is due.

But it’s also hard, because if I want the perfect song to express my characters’ feelings in a rock and roll epic romance, I have to go write my own.

I have nothing against writing poetry—as an angsty teen, I wrote lots. Much of it was about unicorns—1-2-3 CRINGE! The first short story I wrote was an epic poem, in doggerel.

My shame, it still burns.

When I applied to the creative writing program I made up two poems to put in the poetry section, and cringed, hoping for the best. I got accepted into the MA for fiction, but not for poetry, and I was relieved.

Oh dear God, let me not be responsible for poetry.

But with Beneath the Stain, I was writing rock stars. I had to write lyrics—I had to write them. The story wouldn’t make sense without them. I’d wrote them for Mackey, taking a special effort to make the first lyric a little juvenile, a little junky, because Mackey was seventeen when he wrote that and I remembered my first forays into poetry. But after that, I had to pony up.

I’ve read lyrics, repeatedly, and some of them look like regular poetry—Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Damien Jurado, Matty Schulz can tell some serious stories with their lyrics. The rawer, more visceral songs still tell a story—but sometimes it’s a very simple one. There is lots of repetition, lots of places where the music covers the rhythm and the rhyme is shot to hell for much the same reason. One of my favorite songs, “Shelter”, by the Rolling Stones, has lines and lines of lyrics that read “oooh-oooh-oooh” and “It’s just a shout away”. “Louis-Louis” by the Kingston Trio is really a bunch of drunk guys singing about how it’s time to go. The music and the delivery make those songs—the lyrics are the least important part.

I didn’t have a band to back me up, so I had to depend on the words. I did my best.

Some good soul on GoodReads was adamant that it was not good enough. Several lovely people have been kind enough to tell me that the songs helped make the book.

When I had to do the same thing in Paint it Black, I’d given myself a slightly cushier setup, if I say so myself.

For one thing, Blake and Cheever had college degrees–they got to write slightly more sophisticated lyrics than Mackey did at seventeen. For another, I’d made it plain that Blake’s style was a little more acoustic, a little less hard-core rock-show. That meant that the lyrics could be longer, and they could be less music intensive—we were getting into James Taylor/Carole King/Bob Dylan territory here, and, well, more words works for me.

Here viagra side effects appalachianmagazine.com is a simple explanation of both of drugs that will surely help you to make your sexual intercourse last longer and satisfied. The probes one uses should have a rounded tip and a cheap buy viagra smooth surface such as a dildo, drumstick or specialized prostate massage probes. And Cheever was an artist—his poetry was going to be very visual, and very metaphorical, and baby we were on a roll now.

Sort of. I was still a reluctant poet, I admit. One of the songs that Blake wrote for his first solo album was about his unrequited crush on his best friend—and it’s referenced often. I’ll never forget my reaction to the editor’s note on the side.

“Can we see the lyrics to this song so we know what it says?”

I looked at that note and thought of the other lyrics I’d written, and how uncomfortable I was writing poetry for an audience (now that I knew how bad it had been when I was a kid), and sobbed, “Nooooooooooo!”

But it’s in there—I wrote it, because she was right. It needed to be.

But it wasn’t easy. Give me a sex scene any day.

My only hope is that the poetry was sexy and added to the book. Because if I ever get another note in my edit that says, “Hey, you have to write a poem to prompt here—GO!” I might write an entire song that looks like, “Nooooo-oooooooooo-oooooooooooo….”

Everybody thinks Mackey Sanders’s Outbreak Monkey is the last coming of Rock ’n’ Roll Jesus, but Cheever Sanders can’t wait to make a name for himself where nobody expects him to fill his famous brothers’ shoes. He’s tired of living in their shadow.

Blake Manning has been one of Outbreak Monkey’s lead guitarists for ten years. He got this gig on luck and love, not talent. So hearing that Cheever is blowing through Outbreak Monkey’s hard-earned money in an epic stretch of partying pisses him off.

Blake shows up at Cheever’s nonstop orgy to enforce some rules, but instead of a jaded punk, he finds a lost boy as talented at painting as Mackey is at song-making, and terrified to let anybody see the real him. Childhood abuse and a suicide attempt left Cheever on the edge of survival—a place Blake knows all too well.

Both men have to make peace with being second banana in the public eye. Can they find the magic of coming absolute first with each other?

About the Author: Amy Lane lives in a crumbling crapmansion with a couple of growing children, a passel of furbabies, and a bemused spouse. She’s been nominated for a RITA twice, has won honorable mention for an Indiefab, and has a couple of Rainbow Awards to her name. She also has too damned much yarn, a penchant for action-adventure movies, and a need to know that somewhere in all the pain is a story of Wuv, Twu Wuv, which she continues to believe in to this day! She writes fantasy, urban fantasy, and gay romance–and if you accidentally make eye contact, she’ll bore you to tears with why those three genres go together. She’ll also tell you that sacrifices, large and small, are worth the urge to write.

So a little bit about me: I am a mother of two children, one boy who will be twenty-four the middle of last month and one girl who just turned sixteen the previous month. And we will try to get out of this heat in Southwest Arizona and head up into the mountains of Sedona for a week. That was our plan anyway.

And it was one episode of MS that caused my disability to be in an electric wheelchair. But I don’t let it hold me back from my goals in writing. There is a great software that I use called Dragon speech to text to dictate my works and writings. My debut novel of The Take Series, Whatever It Takes, is a suspense romance thriller. Currently I am writing the second book of the trilogy titled All That It Takes. All That It Takes is pretty much a continuation of where the first novel ends. And I’m having fun getting inside their heads of my main characters, Regan and Hunter. In fact I’ll give you a little excerpt of the second novel’s beginning.

Hunter’s lips had had met hers. And now…

Regan stood on wobbly legs at the DFW Airport long after his plane had departed. The musty scent in the air disclosed the age of the structure of the buildings around her. But it did not slow down the hustle and bustle of people who seemed to surround her and their various stage of odors. Some women were overly clad with flowery perfumed scented sprays and men’s aroma of choking unfamiliar. She distracted herself by moving away from the window and carefully reached behind her backside for her cell phone intending to call Sherry.

She had been surrounded with mugginess not only from her mind but the sense of her feelings. Feeling him far, far away from the enchantment and wonderment they had barely started between them.

Not daring to close her eyes, she groaned and brushed her hair back, wishing impossible dreams that he still was here and not a long four months away before he would return.

Dark head of hair, bronze skin, tattooed hand with a scorpion. Hunter.

It all rushed back to her in a surge of fast forward memories. The feeling of Hunter’s experienced hands wrapped around her hips. His kisses on her neck, her jaw, and her mouth as their lips became intimately acquainted on more than one occasion.

Of course, Regan knew exactly what that led to. Their bodies became intertwined as one and was almost like magic. But that night and the next also was almost tragic for them both. She shuddered at the memory and eyed a kiosk that served coffee. Just what I need.

Regan Argent inadvertently uncovered a dark conspiracy that has her on the run, forcing her to return to her childhood home, a small town just outside of Dallas, to seek refuge. Unexpectedly, she bumps into Hunter Grainger, a man she never saw coming. He’s an Air Force pararescueman, on leave, with only one person who knows of his return home. Their unexpected meeting ignites a chain of events where they will be forced to help each other or be executed.

About the Author Marija Salapanov Carpenter writing as MJ Markovski was born in Detroit, Michigan to Macedonian immigrant parents, raised very sheltered, and then moved to Arizona for college. Ended up staying in Tucson.

Two words to remember her by are tenacious and complicated.

The journey to writing Whatever It Takes came to her not only in a form of a dream but also when her husband at the time left her and her children. They had been together since she was eighteen.

But her journey to writing seriously began 2009/2010 when she became disabled from a major attack from multiple sclerosis. Doctors thought at that time she would Die but here she is, and the worst of it was she is currently in an electric wheelchair for mobility. For now. She views it as God’s way for her to have more time in writing.

She doesn’t allow her illness to define her.

MJ loves stories that explore characters and origins. It thrills her to get inside their minds and find out what makes them tick. That’s why she loves writing third person limited because it’s intimate. What if on the surface a person comes up to them you think one character views him as granite steel emotions but he truly speaks in his mind is actually passionate and driven but you can’t see that on the outside you’ll find it out till Chapter Five but his actions show it? She loves the weave stories with their theme another fuel for her many books to come forth. Angst, passion, romance, (she’s a romantic at heart but don’t tell anyone that) and suspense/thriller.

MJ graduated with her Masters from the University of Phoenix in Accounting. She’s worked with government contractor as a Financial Accountant as well as an advisor for taxes. She ran a small business of doing taxes for family and friends for a while in the early 2000’s then stopped because of the MS exasperation that landed her in the hospital. But when she retained her health, she put that business aside and she began seriously writing. That self-run business reignited her passion in her writing and to help others as well when the opportunity comes to help other fellow writers.

MJ enjoys spending time with her family and friends when she can, loves reading, watching a movie once in a great while with her daughter, spending some time outside (when it’s cool and not in the heat of Arizona) life is full of complications but every morning getting up in writing with her vitamin smoothies and coffee is a perfect start of the day.

Opening with the shooting of Lady Virginia ‘Ginie’ Courtauld in her tranquil garden in 1950s Rhodesia, The Dragon Lady tells Ginie’s extraordinary story, so called for the exotic tattoo snaking up her leg. From the glamorous Italian Riviera before the Great War to the Art Deco glory of Eltham Palace in the thirties, and from the secluded Scottish Highlands to segregated Rhodesia in the fifties, the narrative spans enormous cultural and social change. Lady Virginia Courtauld was a boundary-breaking, colourful and unconventional person who rejected the submissive role women were expected to play.

Ostracised by society for being a foreign divorcée at the time of Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson, Ginie and her second husband ,Stephen Courtauld, leave the confines of post-war Britain to forge a new life in Rhodesia, only to find that being progressive liberals during segregation proves mortally dangerous. Many people had reason to dislike Ginie, but who had reason enough to pull the trigger?

What could be better than admirable characters doing things that require courage in an exotic setting? Throw in a little bit of history and a sprinkle of the paranormal, and you have the makings of an exciting story such as this one.

The author has created a story rich with vivid details and based loosely on real people doing extraordinary, selfless things for others and at their own peril. Also, one is treated to meeting a famous person or two who happen to be acquainted with the protagonists, Ginie and Stephen. The fun will continue later if a reader decides to do research on the real people in the story.

As for the setting, Ginie and Stephen are world travelers and live in incredible times. They have the money and freedom to get involved with the world falling apart around them and provide financial and other support.

Readers get a peek inside an English castle, meet royalty, and get to watch as Stephen and Ginie deal with German bombs during World War II. One also gets to go back further and become immersed in the world decades before that, as Ginie marries into the Italian nobility. Most of the book is set in the 1950s, in Africa. Ginie and Stephen buy property there and befriend local people. They take up their cause against the horrible racist treatment they are facing and pay the price. There are some truly scary moments for them.

Relationships are explored during this realistic adventure. There are triumphs and tragedies, enough to keep the pages turning. Readers will love Ginie and Stephen and are not likely to ever forget their story.

But though they complement each other better than coffee and donuts, they have to get past JD’s issues and confront the homophobic boss who wants to keep JD under his thumb before they can sample the sweet, erotic delights waiting for them.

Todd loved his coffee shop business. He got to watch as all sorts of guys hook up and start something new. JD was still deep in the closet and a bit of a workaholic, but the two men hit it off immediately. Can they make a go of the fresh new romance brewing between them?

I found this to be a really fun but super smoking hot full length story. Todd and JD hit it off right away and the chemistry sizzles between them and neither man is shy about jumping the other. I was pleased that Todd didn’t get all alpha-Dominant right from the very start, but rather he eased himself and JD into the more BDSM elements that entered into their relationship. I found this really helped me feel the story was realistic – but also gave me a chance to get to know Todd and JD’s characters a little better before they got their kink on.

A part of me felt that JD trusted Todd a little quicker than I would have expected for a closeted, slightly repressed young man – but while it didn’t strike me, personally, as realistic I could see where the author was coming from in not wanting to drag out the BDSM element to their relationship. The speed and depth of trust between the heroes is totally a matter of the readers personal taste, and while it was a little hasty for me – I bet plenty of other readers will feel it’s paced exactly right.

While most of the story revolves around the two men, there were a few very strongly drawn and interesting secondary characters that I felt helped add to the plot. This gave the store a more three-dimensional feel. Instead of the romance and growing relationship being the only aspect of plot one of JDs colleagues in particular helped give another element – and plenty of conflict too – to the story as a whole and made it feel deeper to me. While the character isn’t a villain in the more traditional sense, he is extremely homophobic and unpleasant (as bad guys are meant to be). Readers looking for happy and light fluff style of story mightn’t find this suits what they’re looking for. That said I really feel this story should appeal to a wide range of readers. There is plenty of steamy sex and a fair bit of kink – nothing too over the top, but enough I’d not be recommending this book to readers who prefer a little less spice and explicitness in their romances.

Sexy and steamy – this is a really good M/M romance with a lovely dose of kink and spice. Great characters and a realistic feel this is a lovely story I greatly enjoyed.

Earth. He loathed this vile planet.

D’Vorak cursed his current predicament, perched high above the city on the flat, stone roof edge of a tall building. He scanned the surrounding area. His mission: find the three women, kidnap them, and get the lot to Rhiannon. If he accomplished his quest, she would cancel the compact his people had with the Clovis. It could only be voided by magic, which none of his people—himself included—had. When the pact ended, his people would be free of the Clovis once and for all. It was why he had taken charge of the mission and did not have one of his generals execute it. Their freedom from the compact must be won before their deception was uncovered. The Clovis could not get their hands on what they had built.

This world smelled like a swampy bog filled with methane gas, excrement, and an undercurrent of desperation. The stench permeated his being to the point where he was unsure he would ever be rid of it, even upon his return to Destruna. In all his days, D’Vorak had never seen so many stone buildings side by side together, or paved stone streets, and they went on for miles and miles, bleeding into the horizon. If he wanted wide open spaces, forests, trees, and grass, he would have to fly many miles, to the perimeter of the city and beyond.

The overcrowding press from multitudes of people left him with the urge to tear this planet apart. How anyone could live with so many people present, he had no clue. It would drive him mad. He could sense them, every heartbeat, every voice, all layered upon each other, drowning the individual out and created a deafening kaleidoscope of sound. The frenetic pace of this planet made it unbalanced and ungainly. It was a world in chaos on the brink of collapse. The skies were scorched, the air infused with noxious chemicals so thick he could taste them in his beast form. It was a wonder these people survived.

How could they not sense the impending doom? That their world was dying?

But has the wily genius misstepped? As all eyes are on Jacob, the Dublin exile carefully plans a gangland wipeout, for he is nobody’s pawn.

This book is told in two parts, but is actually one complete story. The world is organized crime… two major organized crime families, but behind them is the shadowy Black Hand that is actually directing things…. much like a puppet master…the Black Hand is controlling things with no one even knowing what’s going on.

There is non-stop action with Jacob being somewhat of an anti-hero as he takes care of business when his sister is in danger. As I was reading it, I could so see this being an action-thriller on the big screen. There are many characters, but the author does a wonderful job at keeping them all separate and unique.

Because this book is completely steeped in the darkness of organized crime, it is dark, gritty, violent, and bloody, but there is also an element of family loyalty and love present. I found myself rooting for Jacob even as he was taking out his enemies, and I’m not normally a bloodthirsty type!

The book is well plotted and well written… I hated to put it down and stayed up way too late to read this. And, I have to say the ending caught me off guard…..good job, sir. Very well played. This is my first book by Jonathan Dunne but it certainly will not be my last one.

Only Kea has been called in to help keep this African project safe from people with no qualms about using violence to get exactly what they want.

I found this to be a really interesting story, filled with realism and excellent descriptions that proved to me the author had not only done his research, but also experienced much of the African landscape and settings detailed within the story. I was impressed how this story was woven together, with descriptions and details that really made me feel present – but not so heavily over-the-top to slow the plot or action down. It’s a delicate balance that isn’t easy to achieve and I feel the author managed this really well. While there aren’t an enormous number of characters, I felt there were enough of them – and very well drawn and defined – to make the story interesting and kept my attention throughout.

While it’s clear there is a previous story featuring Kea, I was equally relieved and pleased that the author gave enough history so the reader could pick this story up fresh and understand what Kea was trying to recover from without being beaten over the head with the previous story itself. I felt like I got enough details on Kea and her situation to get a good feel for the character without feeling like I was missing out and that helped this story feel stand-alone.

I feel this story will particularly appeal to readers who enjoy adventure and archaeology styles of stories – part Indiana Jones, part Tomb Raider I loved how the story blended scientific fact, real-life expedition adventures and the action-based storyline too. The main characters and plot itself while well-written weren’t unique enough to make the story outstanding, but I feel certain this story will stick out in my mind because of the realism and exceptional details of the African exploration and adventure side of the story as a whole. The author did an amazing job taking me to the African desert and I enjoyed every moment of the experience. The mystery unfolded at a good pace – and I feel this aspect of the plot was well developed and should help retain most readers attention coupled with all the other interesting elements of the story.

A well-written story with interesting characters and fantastic attention to detail that really had me feeling like I was travelling alongside Kea. There’s enough adventure and mystery woven among everything that I feel this should be a good and enveloping read for most and I’d happily try other stories written by this author.

I’m asking the Dixie Reapers for help. If they turn me away, I’m as good as dead, but even that’s preferable to what my half-brother has planned for me next.

I didn’t count on the sexy man with the dark, brooding eyes. The man who defended me only seconds after laying eyes on me. The man who makes me want things I’ve never wanted before. I knew better than to sleep with him, knew I wasn’t good enough. When he rejects me, I run. Discovering several weeks later that he left a little part of himself inside me is even more terrifying than my half-brother finding me.

But I’m no good for her, or anyone else. She thinks she’s not worthy of me, but it’s the other way around.

Then she runs and I feel like a piece of my soul has been ripped out. Finding her won’t be easy, but I won’t stop until she’s back in my home, in my bed. And I’ll make sure that every asshole who ever laid a hand on her is buried six feet under or rotting in prison. No one will ever hurt her again.

It never occurred to me that I would be the asshole to hurt her. I stopped believing in Christmas miracles a long time ago, but now I really need one. I need Rin back, and I’ll do anything to make her mine.

Wraith and Rin. They both had an instant connection and the chemistry is just great. They are what they need for each other.

This is the 8th book in the series. Though it can definitely be read as a standalone, I would like to mention that the characters do appear in each other’s books and in different series.

Rin has a history. Not a good one. Her half-brother is into prostitution and it seems had forced her into it as well. Rin was mentally and physically healing when she came into the club. She immediately felt safe with Wraith. They had a chemistry from the get-go, though it was a bit difficult for me to believe that she was able to be intimate with Wraith that early. After the trauma of her past, I expected it would take some time for her to be ready for that and the intimate sex scenes would come at the absolute end and be a bit sweet. That being said everything was consensual between them.

I loved seeing Wraith with her. He’s protective of her. Regardless of everything else, the sex and chemistry were hot. The need to make her happy was constant with him and I enjoyed reading it. The plot was really easy to get into and follow. Rin and Wraith both have a past and it seems they complete each other.

If you want to understand better and love reading a biker love story with hot chemistry and camaraderie between the brothers, as well as the sizzling chemistry between the hero and damsel in distress…then this book might be for you.
