Top 5 Embarrassing Situations
In Beauregard and the Beast, Bo is a bit of a klutzy human. Unfortunately for him, I tend to project at least one or two of my own traits onto my characters, and I happen to be an accident-prone hot mess. Want proof? Read on.

• For several years, I was a teaching assistant in the anatomy department at The Ohio State University. Part of my duties included running a cadaver-based lab where we provided demonstrations with real human cadavers. One day, while I was stretching across the body to point out a fully intact brachial plexus, a student who was trying to see over my shoulder tripped and knocked into me. Rather than simply stumbling and catching myself as I’m sure most would have done, I managed to fall headfirst into the open chest cavity. My hair got caught on one of the ribs and it took several minutes to get me unstuck.

• When I was in college, I went out of my way to walk by my crush’s fraternity house during a home football game when I knew him and his buddies would be watching the game on the giant projector screen outside. I called out to him but instead of turning to see me waving all nonchalant as I’d planned, he saw me trip over my own two feet, smack my face into a no parking sign, right myself, stumble a second time, and finally fall headfirst into the ground. I wound up with a broken elbow, two black eyes, and a plethora of stitches. I did get a date out of it, sooo… a win in the end?

• My high school had a spiral staircase that led from the second floor open-concept loft hallway down into the main common area/cafeteria. When I was a freshman, I managed to trip and fall down those stairs during one of our block breaks—which meant the entire school was out of class and milling around. Not only did I fall almost the entire way down the stairs and break a few bones, but I also managed to take some of my fellow students with me.

• Later that same year—yeah, my freshman year was brutal—I found myself in another mortifying predicament. I was on stage waiting to receive my varsity letter for track and was standing by one of the tables they had set up to lay out the letters and certificates they were handing out. For some reason, they had the helium-filled balloons tied to the tablecloth instead of the table itself. One of those balloons was a bit deflated and hovering near the floor. Don’t ask me how—to this day, even with video evidence, no one can quite tell how I managed it—but that sad little balloon found itself between my legs. When I went to walk to the center of the stage to get my letter, the balloon came with me… as did the tablecloth, letters, and alphabetized certificates. Which of course meant the humiliation continued as they struggled for the rest of the ceremony to find the right certificate to hand to the correct party.

• Far be it from me to leave even my biggest days untouched by my disaster magnet. On my wedding day, as I was walking up the aisle toward my now-husband, I tripped and attempted to catch myself by increasing my forward momentum as I flailed my arms wildly through the air. All that managed to accomplish was to accelerate my fall. I landed at my husband’s feet, and yet again, I wound up with video evidence of my shame. As well as a large audience of my closest friends and family who will never—ever—let me live that down.

So, now that you’ve been privy to my top five most embarrassing moments, perhaps you’ll understand why I occasionally subject my characters to the curse that is my epic klutz-dom. After all, I’d be remiss not to use the endless litany of fodder my daily existence provides for fun and humiliating scenes.

His greatest prize can’t be won in the octagon.

But Bo is pleasantly surprised when a shared love of books leads them to study for their GEDs together and plan for a life after their current careers. Adam won’t be able to fight forever, and Bo wants a relationship on equal footing.

But just as their relationship is getting off the ground, the sister Bo raised needs his help, and he drops everything. With Adam’s final match looming and Bo in a different city, reuniting will be the real challenge.

The smell of fresh laundry mixed with strong cleaning chemicals assaulted Adam’s senses the moment he walked through the garage door after his morning training. He scrunched his nose in protest. The clean linen smell was pleasant, but what the hell kind of biochemical warfare was Bo waging on his home? The pungent scent of corrosive bleach and all manner of other caustic solutions burned his nostrils and left his head spinning.

He headed for the laundry room to drop off his gym bag and found Bo on his hands and knees in the hallway, scrubbing at the stone tile flooring.

Bo sat back on his haunches and swiped a wrist over his brow. “I’m almost done here any—” His eyes bugged, and he scurried to his feet, the sponge dropping from his hand. “Holy crap on a cracker, what the heck happened to you?”

Adam froze when Bo’s soapy fingertips grazed his jaw. A jolt of electricity fired under his skin at the connection. He followed the tingling path of Bo’s touch with his own fingers, marveling at the intensity of the impression that brief contact left behind.

“Did you get jumped?” Bo’s brows pinched, his lips turning down at the corners. “Did you call the police? Are you hurt anywhere else?”

A laugh bubbled up Adam’s throat at the unexpected barrage of questions and the look of genuine concern twisting Bo’s face. When was the last time anyone cared he’d been hurt? Hell, unless they bordered on life-threatening, even he failed to notice his injuries more often than not. So was the life of a mixed martial arts fighter. Sparring was the best way to train, and sparring equaled wounds. Rarely as intense as those suffered at an official fight, but colorful and bloody nonetheless.

“I’m fine. Just a few scratches.” Adam tried to grin, but the act tugged at his already split lip and fresh blood trickled down his chin.

Bo gasped and clamped a hand over Adam’s wrist. “That’s more than a scratch. Where’s your first aid kit?”

“First aid kit?” Adam cocked a brow. He didn’t keep anything like that at home. If his injuries required mending, Eddie, his coach, would tend to him after he hit the showers. Today, the damage was minimal, so he’d left without patching up.

Gaping, Bo shook his head. “Don’t tell me you get beat up for a living and don’t keep basic first aid supplies around the house.”

Adam knuckled the blood off his chin and shrugged. “It’s a split lip. I’ll be fine.”

“A split lip, a black eye, and a gashed eyebrow. That is not fine.” Bo scowled and dropped Adam’s wrist with an adorable little huff. “I’m adding medical supplies to the grocery list. If you’re going to come home looking like roadkill on a regular basis, I’m going to need some necessities. In the meantime, will you at least let me put some ice on that eye?”

Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Tropes

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

The tropes I’m going to talk about today come from a variety of genres. It was easier to jump around among them than to stick to only one!

1. Friends-to-Lovers.

I don’t read a lot of romance, but this is one trope that always grabs my attention from that genre. My spouse and I originally started out as friends, so I deeply enjoy seeing fictionalized versions of what it looks like when platonic love becomes romantic.

2. Séances.

Most of the books I read on this topic are written about characters who are knowingly or unknowingly participating in fake séances, but real ones are interesting, too.

3. Urban Legends.

I’ve been fascinated by urban legends since childhood. They can make a wonderful addition to stories in certain genres, especially mysteries.

4. Based on a True Story.

Some books that include this phrase take liberties with what actually happened in order to tell a better story or protect the identities of innocent people. Others do an amazing job of sticking to the facts as much as is possible for the author. While I do tend to prefer the more truthful accounts of real events, anything inspired by something that really happened is going to grab my attention.

5. Books That (Literally) Bite
Also, the jelly form of sildenafil citrate needs to be taken 1 hour prior of sexual order generic levitra intercourse so that he can satisfy his partner’s need. A person must see to it tadalafil professional that he takes the necessary treatment for it. Available as kamagra soft tabs, kamagra jellies and kamagra tablets, the cheaper and herbal counterpart of cialis in more. Below is a list of five proven herbs that cheapest price for viagra help to enhance the penis had been tested not just to work but also to deliver safe results.
For example, there were references to a book in the Harry Potter series that had teeth and would try to bite anyone who attempted to open it. There’s something so funny to me about that mental image!

6. Detectives Who Lick Poison.

This isn’t something I’ve seen in a lot of modern mysteries, but I do remember running across this scene occasionally in older works. What sort of detective licks evidence? Wouldn’t they worry about being poisoned themselves? I sure do like thinking about those questions whenever I run across a main character willing to do this in an old-fashioned mystery.

7. Bad Weather Interrupting Plans.

Whether it’s due to a blizzard, fog, thunderstorm, or some other weather problem, I always find it interesting to see how characters react to having to change their plans because of Mother Nature’s whims.

8. Genre Mashups Being Open About Being Mashups.

I deeply enjoy genre mashups if I know that about them ahead of time. That is, I want the blurb to be totally upfront about the fact that the plot is a mixture of two or more genres. When this happens, I enjoy seeing how the author combines everything together.

9. Ghosts Explaining How They Died

One of the reasons why I enjoy the paranormal genre so much is that generally the ghosts in them explain how they died. This is even more satisfying when the ghost themselves didn’t know the answer to that question in the beginning.

10. Crop Circles.

Crop circles are cool in any sort of story if you ask me.

Twelve-year-old Freya enjoys karate and is the only one in her class who’s trusted with a part-time job. But everything changes when she meets a boy with yellow eyes. She learns about the guardians, and how an age-old fight has prevented them from fulfilling their purpose.

Some of the persons have the disease that is called viagra discounts erectile dysfunction or impotence. Most viagra cialis generico women wish their partners could give them what they want in bed by just reading their minds. A destructive shadow lies within her and all she needs to do to release it is close her eyes.

But as the guardians’ war rages on, Freya realises that, although the shadow’s power can be useful, it can’t create peace. To do that, Freya and her friends must solve the mysterious crime that began the war. Can they bring the guardians together before they destroy each other?

Ms. Crow did a good job setting up the world in this first book of her Feather Down series. The world, in a different realm than humanity, is “peopled” by various bird clans who serve as Guardians over human beings. Unfortunately, they have found themselves involved in a generations-long war that takes up all their time and energy and keeps them from fulfilling their mission.

This is an ensemble piece that puts together Freya and her friends so they can work with the clans and help get them back together so they can fulfill their purpose. This group of young creatures also serve to show their elders the importance of judging everyone on their own merits, not just assuming you know what they will do or think based on the group they belong to.

There were a few cases of continuity issues and some word choices I found distracting, but this could very well be because I am an editor at my IRL job and things like that jump out at me. The average reader (especially ones on the middle-grade level which this book is aimed at) probably would not have an issue.

The action and the characters were well-done enough that these few issues did not take me out of the book much. The action–especially the further into the book I got–was non-stop and well-written with some amazing twists. I could see the action in my mind’s eye and think this would make a wonderful movie with the special effects available today.

I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

Read Lis Mitchell’s magical realist tale, Blue Morphos in the Garden, a Tor.com original short story. When Vivian and her daughter witness the family matriarch die without leaving a corpse, Vivian can no longer ignore the family “gift” or the choice that lies before her.

Made by Ajanta http://djpaulkom.tv/confessions-of-a-fifo-intercourse-worker-how-do/ discount cialis Pharmaceuticals, the oral result is available in characteristics of 100mg and is offered at high bore with to extraordinary degree terrible rates. Only few check these guys cheap online cialis medicines were famous to avail Kamagra anti-impotence medicine. There’s more than one way to have a good death.

The twist in this tale was something I’ve never seen in this genre before. It had to do with what happens to all of the members of a special family after they die. While the first scene does explain about how their deaths are different from the deaths of ordinary humans, I honestly can’t go into any more detail about it than that without giving away spoilers. Let’s just say that it was hauntingly beautiful and is best discovered by new readers without any additional hints.

I was highly impressed with the character development, especially given the fact that the author had less than two dozen pages to work with here. Vivian and her partner both had well-rounded personalities that revealed themselves early on and quickly began to evolve as a result of both of their reactions to the latest death in the family. This couldn’t have been better written, and it’s made me curious to read more from Ms. Mitchell as soon as possible.

The world building was well done, too. Vivian’s extended family has lived on the same property for generations without revealing their secret to the surrounding community. Every nook and cranny of their land is filled with references to those who lived there in the past. I was as fascinated by the references to the lives of everyone who had once lived there as I was by the fact that they’d been able to keep such a big secret for so long. All of these little details created a setting that felt three-dimensional and real.

Blue Morphos in the Garden was one of the best science fiction short stories I’ve read so far this year. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Josie: I spent an amazing three days with Jackal before he disappeared, back to his club, the Devil’s Boneyard. He’d made it clear what we had was a temporary thing — he never wanted the picket fence and kids. I was fine with that. Then I faced the scariest thing ever. Telling my big brother, Tank, a Dixie Reaper, I was pregnant and alone at the age of nineteen. He wanted to go after Jackal, but I wouldn’t let him. I wanted this baby, and I knew Jackal wouldn’t. I never expected to see him again. Funny how fate has a way of surprising you.

I never counted on the little girl glued to her hip, or the fact the kid was mine. So I did what I do best. I ran. But now I want something I’ve never wanted before. My family. Because Josie and our daughter, Allegra, are exactly what’s been missing in my life. I just have to do some groveling and hope she’ll forgive me. Easy, right? I’ve never had a woman tell me no.

Figures the one I want more than anything might be the first to send me packing. But when she gets an unexpected visitor who threatens her and our child, I’ll do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Now that I’m ready to keep my woman and kid, I’m not letting anyone take them away.

Gruff bikers with a sweet exterior and club that will protect their family from everyone–that is what I loved about this series. Although this is the first book in this series, it is a spin off to the Dixie Reapers series.

The post-church meeting gossip was fun to read since it showed how intertwined the clubs are with each other. It did leave me scratching my head confused, though. Why? Because there were details mentioned that either I didn’t know or had forgotten were mentioned. There is some implied violence, but nothing that should trigger.

Everyone has there own way of dealing with shocking and life-altering news. Jackal’s way was running. That said, this is a second chance romance that includes a sweet baby girl and a dad trying to make up for everything.

This book has multiple plots, which keep you in your toes. Josie’s brother Tank is a Dixie Reaper and when she finds herself pregnant after spending a couple days with him, the Dixie Reapers rally around her and her child.

The story itself spans a little over two years, but it does skip two years to when Jackal finds out the truth. It’s well-written and gave me a bit of action with the romance. I saw the friendship between the brothers and between the different clubs. It is a sizzling romance with a hint of violence.

Meet Avery Finch who is taking care of her father’s store since he was injured by the mafia because he could not pay up. When Gino Mazza enters the store looking for her father and the rest of the money owed, he is confronted by Avery. We have sparks.

As she does not have the complete amount Gino threatens to injure her father more. She is desperate to keep her father safe, so she offers herself as payment. Like he’ll tell her no? The interplay between them, plus her devotion to her father, made the characters more realistic. I liked how the author rendered them. I didn’t like Gino at times, but that worked because he needed redemption. What I did like was her journey. She comes to terms with her desires–what she wants in the bedroom, what she needs and that toys are just as much fun as the real thing. The changes in both characters are fulfilling and deeper than I expected–which is great.

I thought it was strange how easily Avery accepted her situation and that even though she has only had sex once, she is not embarrassed by all the new situations. She does not try for her freedom either, although there was no way she could have found a way out but she didn’t even think of it. This isn’t a rosy romance and readers looking for such might not get what they want from this story.

This is a short novel that shows you can’t push away love when it enters your heart. It also shows that it is okay to learn about your own sexuality without consequences. They both learn that you can’t fight a connection that goes soul deep.

If you want a romance that’s not status quo, then this might be the one for you.

Thoughts on Writing and Thea Reeves

The way I write is I visualize the story happening in my mind, and then, simply describe what I see. There are really no “musts” or “must nots” in any of my stories, and it is exactly what makes them real. I do not follow any templates. It is possible to even write a story or a novel without a hero or a villain, then smile and watch the critics scratch their heads trying to figure out exactly what the book is all about.

The reason I began writing the Thea Reeves series, is because I wanted for my daughter to have a character that she really could relate to and a character she would really like. After finishing reading the first book of the series “Thea Reeves and The Tear of the Morning Star”, my daughter immediately asked for the second book. This is how I knew that I had my daughter’s approval to proceed with the series.

If asked “How many books will there be in the Thea Reeves series?”, I will answer this: I currently do not have an exact number of books I’d like to have. When I first started, I wanted to have 99 books in the series, and I also wanted to have a character, a hero, an audience could grow up with. Currently, however, I am not shooting quite that high and have 9 books planned, with 4 of the books already completed.

In regards to lessons I have learned though my character, Thea Reeves, I’d say there are none, since my approach is to actually teach lessons that I have learned in my life through the heroes and the villains in my books. I want my readers to understand that not every hero is a hero and may actually turn out to be a villain and do evil things … and not every villain is a villain and may actually turn out to be a hero and perform great acts of heroism. I want my readers to learn that everyone is capable of greatest acts of heroism, while at the same time capable of the greatest acts of evil.

When asked about things most people don’t know about me, I answer quite simply: There is a reason certain things are not known about me, and I’d like to keep it this way. In all other regards I’m actually quite open. My education is not in creative writing, but in 2014 I suddenly had an urge to write and haven’t stopped since. Currently I do not even know the exact number of books I have written, but I know that number is in the mid forties.

Thea Reeves is an ordinary girl, from an ordinary family with financial troubles, living in a small town of Johnston. After she starts an after school job at The Magic Shop in order to help herself financially, her life becomes more extraordinary with every day.

The rest of the day went by rather smoothly. Just after five o’clock, people from all walks of life began to pour into The Magic Shop. Some were buying, but surprisingly, many were there for the coffee and to read books. To Thea, Jamie explained that most of their customers are business oriented individuals, who find magic as a way to unwind after a long stressful day at work. They come in, read, usually never buy books, but on occasion buy a souvenir or two for friends and family, and almost always leave good tips.

What Thea found fascinating is that no one tried to steal anything all day, and everyone was polite and courteous. Jamie did not know how to explain that, but she told Thea that there is a magic spell on The Magic Shop, where people leave all of their anger, worries and problems at the door, and those who can’t … never come inside.

It felt strange, but Thea also felt that on her first day at The Magic Shop, she did not once think about her chores, problems at home, or money difficulties her parents have. The entire time she was just happy to be at The Magic Shop.

What was really exciting is that at the end of the day, Thea found herself holding thirty five dollars in tips from coffee drinking and book reading patrons. If every day would be like this, that dream car would become a reality by the time Thea would receive her driver’s license.

Jump Into Author Carolyn Brown’s Empty Nest
Good morning, and thank you for inviting me to stop by to talk about my new book, The Empty Nesters. I’ll be giving all y’all a few of my favorite scenes and a little commentary during the time we get to spend together.

As Ma used to say on Golden Girls, imagine this—Carmen, Joanie and Diana have just dropped their daughters off at the recruiter’s office. They’ve managed to keep the tears at bay and put up a brave front, but now it’s time to let the tears loose.

“For the first time ever, Natalie and I won’t decorate the house for Halloween together. Nine months of carrying them, then we basically raised them on our own while our husbands were deployed or got sent someplace to train other officers. And now they’re gone, and we won’t see them for Halloween or Thanksgiving. And who even knows about Christmas? It’s not fair.”

It’s always amazing what comes to mind during a sad time, isn’t it? Things pop into our heads that seem trivial in the face of the event, and yet, at the time, the good memories are what keep us sane.

Tootsie, their elderly neighbor, has just lost her husband, after they’d bought the huge RV and planned a trip to northeast Texas. She’s trying to convince the women that they need to get away from their empty nest for a while.

“You need to get away for a little while and get some perspective,” Tootsie said.

“Let’s pool our money and blow it all on a trip to Paris. We can shop and have lattes in little bistros,” Diana suggested.

Joanie sighed. “That’s a pipe dream. We probably don’t have enough money to even get to Paris, Texas, between the three of us.”

The three of them have known the support of each other through the past thirteen years, and just because they’re now alone in their homes, they have no doubt that the love is still there between them—and that it’s even stronger than blood sisters.

“We’re only half a block and a phone call away. If any of us feel the world dropping out from under our feet, we can get back together in less than five minutes.”

I was amazed at how supportive all of them, including Tootsie, were of each other. They might disagree, but Lord help the person that tried to come between them, or who had the nerve to say an ugly word about one of them.

Everything happens for a reason and in the time that it should happen. I believe that with my whole heart. Diana had gotten her divorce years before the book opens, but she remembers the pain and anger of it all. Then she focused all her energy and time on raising her daughter. But now it’s her time to find a new love, and a new life—maybe with a younger man.

“That many trips into town on those roads would shake the hell out of their Caddy. And believe me, Aunt Tootsie treats that car like family.” Luke chuckled. “Age, on a truck or on a person, makes no difference. It’s how well they’re maintained that matters.”

Why, oh, why, couldn’t he have smooth pickup lines like other men? Luke asked himself. What he’d just said could be taken as an insult. She might think that he thought she looked like an old pickup truck at her age, when in reality she was downright gorgeous. He wouldn’t be a bit surprised if she still got carded at bars when she ordered a drink.

Thank you again, for inviting me into your world, and letting me talk about the amazing ladies (and Luke of course), from The Empty Nesters. Happy reading to each and every one of you!

Why I Love Writing Romance

From birth to death, romance is part of everyone’s lives, a mother’s love for her newborn baby, a son or daughter’s love for a parent, or love for the person who shares your life.

Falling in love is the part that intrigues me. I love giving my characters obstacles that reveal their strengths and weaknesses, everything from murder and mayhem to running for their lives. The obstacles they face form the plots of my stories. The way the characters overcome them shows their strengths and weaknesses and eventually is what draws the two of them together.

In my latest Romantic Thriller, THE DECEPTION, book two of my Maximum Security series, Kate Gallagher is devastated when she learns her sister has been murdered. Determined to find Chrissy’s killer, Kate hires lethal bounty hunter, Hawk Maddox. Working together, they follow a trail of clues that lead them deep into the city’s underbelly. Though Hawk warns her of the danger, nothing he says can convince Kate to walk away.

The best part of writing a romantic thriller is that the reader can be sure the perils the couple faces will be worth it. By the last page of the book, the hero and heroine are going to find the forever kind of love and get the happy ending they deserve.

I hope you will watch for THE DECEPTION, and that if you haven’t read THE CONSPIRACY, you’ll look for it, too.
Till then very best wishes and happy reading, Kat

When missing turns to murdered, one woman’s search for answers will take her to a place she never wanted to go…

After searching for her sister for two long years, Kate Gallagher is devastated when she’s called to the morgue to identify Chrissy’s body, the runaway teen the victim of a brutal attack. Guilt and grief send Kate into a tailspin. She failed Chrissy once…she won’t do it again. Even if finding her sister’s killer means following a lethal bounty hunter into the heart of darkness, placing both their lives in danger.

Working at Maximum Security has taken Jason Maddox down some dangerous paths, but never for a client he’s so drawn to, or for a case so monstrous. As clues lead them deeper into the city’s underbelly, connections to human trafficking draw them closer and closer to peril, but even Jase’s warnings can’t convince Kate to walk away. As the deadly operation puts a target on their backs, they’ll have to decide what matters most: the truth…or their lives.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Gallagher. I know this is terribly painful, but unless there’s someone else who can make a positive identification–“

Kate shook her head. “No. There’s no one else.”

“All right then, if you will please follow me.” The medical examiner, Dr. Jerome Maxwell, a man in his fifties with thick black hair threaded with gray, started down the hall, but Kate stopped him with a hand on his arm.

“Are you…are you completely sure it’s my sister? The victim is definitely Christina Gallagher?”

“There was a fingerprint match to your missing sister. I’m sorry. We’ll still need your confirmation.”

Kate’s stomach rolled. Her hand trembled as she followed the doctor down a narrow, endless hallway in the Dallas County morgue. The echo of her high heels on the stark gray linoleum sent a sweep of nausea through her.

The doctor paused outside a half glass door. “I warn you, this is going to be difficult. Are you sure there isn’t someone you can call, someone else who could make the identification?”

Kate’s throat tightened. “My father’s remarried and living in New York. He hasn’t seen Chrissy in years.”

“And your mother?” the doctor asked kindly.

“She died of a heart attack a year after Chrissy ran away.” For Madeleine Gallagher, losing both her husband and her daughter had simply been too much.

The doctor straightened his square black glasses. “Are you ready?”

“I’ll never be ready to see my sister’s murdered body, Dr. Maxwell. But I’m all Chrissy has, so let’s get it over with.”

The doctor opened the door and they walked out of a hallway that seemed overly warm into a room that was icy cold. A shiver rushed over Kate’s skin and her heart beat faster. As Dr. Maxwell moved toward a rollout table in front of a wall of cold-storage boxes, Kate could see the outline of a body beneath the stark white sheet.

Emotion tightened her chest. This was her baby sister, only sixteen the last time Kate had seen her two years ago, before she had run away.

The doctor nodded to a female assistant in a white lab coat standing next to the table, and the woman pulled back the sheet.

“Dear God.” The bile rose in Kate’s throat. She swayed and the doctor caught her arm to steady her.

“Is this your sister, Christina Gallagher?”

Tears welled and slipped down her cheeks. “It’s…it’s her.”

“I’m sorry for your loss,” the doctor said.

She wouldn’t be returning to her office today. She needed time to grieve.

Kate slid in behind the wheel and shoved her key into the ignition. Fresh pain struck so hard she couldn’t breathe. Instead of starting the engine, Kate put her head down on the steering wheel and started to weep.

Jason Hawkins Maddox sat at the old fashioned long bar in the Sagebrush Saloon, a country western hangout with a juke box in the corner for dancing. Tonight he was there on business, meeting an informant he hoped would give him a lead on the fugitive he was hunting, Randall Darren Harding.

Harding, a cement contractor, had been arrested for the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend. He’d been out on bail when he’d decided to flee instead of standing trial, where most likely he would have been convicted.

From what Jase could find out, Harding was a rotten, self-centered, mean-tempered bastard, the kind who could wind up killing again. He’d strangled his girlfriend in a fit of rage, but a fancy lawyer had gotten him out on bail.
The reward for catching him was a fat fifteen percent of his million and a half dollar bond. Jase planned to collect.

Thus his meeting with Tommy Dieter at the Sagebrush Saloon.

It was relatively early, a little after nine p.m., but the place was already more than half full. The décor was rustic, with a sea of wooden tables. A big dance floor dominated the interior, the juke belting Willie Nelson for the couples that were.

In the mirror in the carved oak back bar across from him, he could see himself on a bar stool next to a little guy in a blue Texas Rangers baseball cap. The little guy made Jase look even bigger than his six-foot four-inch, two hundred twenty pound frame.

So far Tommy hadn’t showed, but he wasn’t due for at least another hour. In the meantime, Jase was enjoying the local scenery, his attention fixed on the tall blonde with the pretty face, sexy curves, and amazing cleavage, but then half the guys in the bar were watching her.

In a short jeans skirt, a pair of cowboy boots, and a bright pink tank top, she had danced five times in a row. If he weren’t there on business, he might ask her for a turn around the floor himself. Jase watched the blonde dancing with a lanky biker too short for her, too skinny, and a few years too young.

She wasn’t meant for the boy biker, but she was just Jase’s type, luscious, with legs that went on forever. And as she slid her arms around the boy biker’s neck and he pulled her close, clearly uninhibited. It didn’t take much to imagine the way she’d feel moving beneath him.

He picked up his beer and took a drink. He’d been watching her all evening. The good news was, she’d been watching him, too.

When the song came to an end, she left the boy biker and walked right up to him, the heels on her boots pushing her closer to his height.

She smiled. “You like to dance, cowboy?”

“Depends.”

“On what? The song?”

“Who I’m dancing with.”

A dark blond eyebrow went up. “Is that right…”

“That’s right, darlin’, and you’ll do just fine.” Without waiting for a reply, Jase swept her onto the dance floor. She felt good in his arms, fit him just right. She was a good dancer, but so was he. He was a Texan. He’d done all the usual things a Texas boy did. Played football, drank beer down on the river, rode horses, and two-stepped.

“What’s your name?” he asked as he whirled her around the floor.

“Kate.” She smiled. “You’re Hawk.” Her smile widened into a grin that etched a dimple into her cheek and he felt a jolt of heat. “I like it,” she said. “It’s sexy.”

“You think so?” As the song came to an end, he drew her off the dance floor into the shadows, took a chance she wouldn’t slap his face, and kissed her.

She softened against him and kissed him back, and he took it a little deeper, felt the rush hit his system. Since they were standing in a bar full of people, he didn’t let it go too far.

Kate ran a finger along his jaw. “You looked like you’d be a good kisser and you are,” she said.

“We can go outside and I’ll show you just how good I can be, but it’s gotta be up to you.”

Something flickered in her big brown eyes and for a moment her bright smile faded. “I need that tonight. Just this once, just to help me forget.” Her bottom lip trembled an instant before her saucy grin returned. “Come on, cowboy, let’s go.”

A new telling of the old story, the ghost, the singer and the love between them.

I’m all for retelling of The Phantom of the Opera. It’s a bit of a thing for me. When I see new versions of the story, I have to read them. I’m intrigued.

This story intrigued me from the moment I read the blurb. He’s a singer in hiding and she’s a singer coming up. Kind of had an A Star is Born flavor to it. Now I know The Phantom of the Opera has a kind of stalkerish feel to it. It does. Plus, trying to make the story seem a little less so is a rather hard row to hoe. I get it. This one… the writing captured me and I had to know how this story would end. I liked Christine and Erik well enough, but there were times when it was almost too much of a stretch to buy in. I wanted to root for them, but it was tough. He could be very cold to her and she wanted more than he could give. I wished they’d been more communicative, but such is life. It did mirror life in that way.

If you’re looking for a hot read that’s flavored by Phantom and Star, then this might be the book for you. I’m glad I picked this book up. Worth the read.
