Faye
I needed the money.

My sister’s medical bills were mounting, and I needed lots of money—fast. The only thing I had was my virginity, and I knew just the place to sell it. I never expected to have the night of my life, but that’s what I did. I don’t know the name of the man who purchased me and helped me more than he can know. I only have the memories…

I’ve never been interested in virgins. I prefer a woman who knows how to take care of my dick and not ask for direction, but one look at her and I knew there was no going back.

For months after that night, I tried to find her, but I failed. So, when I discover she’s been working at my company for the past month, I know that’s going to change. She’s going to work right beside me, and I’m going to take what belongs to me. She was a virgin—and now she’s mine.

We have unfinished business, and I don’t care what it takes to get her back in my bed. I never said I was a good guy when it came to getting what I wanted, but Faye has a way that drives me crazy. I can’t walk away from her because … I fucking love her.

Faye’s world was rocked when she discovered their stepfather had brainwashed and been sexually abusing her younger sister for years. While the bastard was in jail now, it wasn’t impossible that he might get parole and Faye is determined both she and her little sister will be far, far away by then. Needing the largest possible influx of cash in one hit to achieve this goal, Faye decides to sell off her virginity to the highest bidder and doesn’t have an ounce of regret. Chase has never had a thing for virgins, but he goes along to the club with a good friend and Faye’s photo captures something inside him. Chase can’t explain why, but virgin or not, he needs this woman and is prepared to pay whatever it takes to have her.

This isn’t a gentle or “nice” sort of book. Despite the fact it’s Faye’s first time and she willingly and knowingly sells off her viriginity, there’s a darkness that I found to this story and the author’s tone of voice that left me feeling a little unsettled. There’s no graphic descriptions of their stepfather sexually abusing Faye’s underage little sister for many years – but even the brief explanation given of that was enough to make me uncomfortable. I strongly feel readers with triggers regarding incest or abuse of children might want to consider carefully before reading this. Faye herself absolutely consents – albeit with qualm and nerves – to the night she shares with Chase. There is no heavy description of abuse or nastiness, but I really couldn’t shake the sense of darkness that seemed to hang over the story. Readers looking for a grittier, harder style of story will probably love this book. Those looking for a sweeter or more gentle style of story – or one a little lighter – might not find what they’re after here.

I found Faye to be a modern, strong and interesting character. It took me a while to understand her though, as for someone so young she seemed oddly mature and calm with so many emotionally charged things going on within her life. I think this slight lack of believability made it difficult for me to really feel attached to her as much as I wanted to. I liked her, I strongly empathized with her, but she seemed a little too calm, rational and logical given the giant upheaval in her life. I did like, however, how Chase became possessive and very alpha-male about Faye. Used to always having his way – or just buying whatever he desired – I liked how he had to come to grips a number of times with the fact that Faye wasn’t someone to be swayed by his money or power. She had her own ideas and road to travel and she wasn’t going to use her need for money to support her little sister as a bargaining chip.

A slightly dark, gritty and very emotional read, I feel this won’t hit the spot for all readers. Sexy and hot, but also to my mind, dark, this is an interesting, fresh and very different read that made me think about a lot of things in this world we currently live in. A good read for people looking for something different.

A peculiar explorer and downtrodden acrobat span the globe on a building-sized hot air balloon, in search of a precious artifact and the murderous treasure hunter who seeks it.

WINNER: Pinnacle Book Achievement Award – Summer 2018 – Best Adventure

Beatrix, a spirited but abused acrobat in a traveling circus, seeks more than her prison-like employment offers. More than anything, she wants to know her place in the world of the halcyon 19th century, a time when the last dark corners of the map were being sketched out and travel still possessed a kind of magic.

One night in Switzerland, the mysterious Colonel James Bacchus attends Beatrix’s show. This larger-than-life English gentleman, reputed to have a voracious appetite for female conquests, is most notable for traveling the world in a four-story hot air balloon called The Ox.

Beatrix flees that night to join the Colonel, and the two of them make a narrow escape—Beatrix from her abusive ringleader, the Colonel from a freshly-made cuckold. Beatrix, feeling the Colonel may have the answers to her problems, pledges to help him catch the criminal he seeks in exchange for passage on his magnificent balloon.

The criminal seeks a precious figurine, The Blue Star Sphinx, but he’s not alone. The Sphinx’s immense value has also drawn the attention of the world’s most deadly treasure hunters. A murder in Antwerp begins a path of mystery that leads all the way to the most isolated island on Earth.

What dangers await the Colonel and the acrobat?

Beatrix is an orphan who works as a trapeze artist in the circus. She performs over bare ground to make it more dangerous. Her boss uses a whip to punish any employee that acts out or gets mouthy. She gets her fair share of correction because she talks back to him. But one night she sees an Englishman at the show and finds out he rides around in a hot air balloon. She likes the trapeze because it reminds her of flying. Imagine what it would be like to ride in a hot air balloon!

Beatrix begs to ride on the hot air balloon. She wants to escape the circus. The Colonel refuses but when she offers to help him find the criminal he’s hunting he finally decides he’ll take her. He doesn’t intend to keep her long.

It’s a four-story hot air balloon. He soon teaches her how to fly and manipulate the balloon. She’s not real good at it, but she learns to stay afloat. The only thing she doesn’t like about the Colonel is that he’s a womanizer. Every time they stop somewhere he’s out looking for a woman.

She meets the other members of his team and they all become friends. They’re looking for the mysterious Christopher and he’s hard to find. Bee doesn’t know but the Colonel has more secrets. It’s a good thing she had acrobat training. It’s the only thing that keeps her alive…

Mr. Canning writes a very good story. It starts with a fast pace and that lasts the whole story. There’s plenty of danger, lots of excitement, and two unlikely characters become a team. There’s not a boring part in this story. The story flows well and you almost think you’re losing a character or two but not to worry. It ends unusually but happily.

Frank follows the motto, “Honesty is the best policy.” He tells the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Frank never lies to his schoolmates, he always tells the truth to adults, and he’s always honest with police officers. The balancing act of finding tact, that fine line between telling the truth and telling too much truth, is the main theme of this story, and it’s very funny—although not necessarily to his friend Dotti whose freckles remind Frank of the Big Dipper, or to the teacher who hears that her breath smells like onions, or to the principal who is told that his toupee looks like a weasel. No one is quite as impressed with Frank’s honesty as he thinks they should be. He is sweet and straightforward, and, well, very frank, but with everyone annoyed at him, Frank is now honestly unhappy. He decides to visit his confidante and pal, Grandpa Ernest, who has a history of frankness himself. With a few lessons from Grandpa, Frank begins to understand that the truth is important, but so is not being hurtful. With amusing characters and expressive artwork, this story tells the powerful message of finding the good in everything—a lesson that sends compassion and understanding to take the place of rudeness in the complex concept of truth.

Frank was such a likeable kid. Even though he said hurtful things at the beginning of this tale, his intentions were never to make anyone sad. In fact, he was horrified at the thought that he’d accidentally done exactly that! Figuring that out in one of the earliest scenes was all it took for me to start rooting for him to find more gentle ways to express his opinions about other people. His heart was in the right place, so I looked forward to finding out if he’d be able to make the changes he needed in order for other people to understand what he was trying to say to them.

I would have liked to see Frank’s grandfather spend a little more time explaining the difference between being tactful and lying to someone. As an adult, I totally understood exactly what he was getting at, but I do think that this age group would benefit from a more straightforward explanation of this topic. It’s an important one, and I would have chosen a perfect rating if this character had been given a few more lines to show kids how to talk about something they didn’t like without offending anyone.

With that being said, the ending was really well done. I liked the reactions that Frank’s friends and neighbors had once they realized he was trying a new way of communicating with them. Without giving away any plot twists, they were also great role models for how to behave when someone says something that you’re not entirely sure how to respond to at first.

Being Frank should be read by anyone who has ever accidentally put their foot in their mouth and said something they later regretted.

David Shep is finally seeing his father’s protégé for the stunning woman she truly is—in the office and in his bed. But when her support is conspicuously absent when he needs her most, he can’t help but wonder if he can trust her with his heart.

Jean had never got along with her step-sister, Beth. As kids Beth had mercilessly led the charge of bullying and teasing against Jean and while the aggravation had become more subtle in their adulthood nothing had really changed. When Beth became splashily engaged to Jean’s boss – and long-term crush – David, Jean knew she had to move past her infatuation with the sexy, charming man. Only Beth dumps David at the last minute and a huge proposal for a very important client is about the crash and burn and Jean can’t leave David in the lurch. Will David finally see Jean the way she’s always wanted him to?

I found this to be a sexy and interesting steamy story. I really enjoyed both Jean and David’s characters – finding them realistic and relatable. I admit that I had a bit of a hard time believing that after working together fairly closely as boss and one of his editors that neither had any clue of the other’s interest. The office didn’t seem to be crammed full of other workers, and both Jean and David certainly knew each other fairly well professionally, so six years of Jean mooning over David – and a similarly long period of David plotting how to get into Jean’s panties – just made the whole “I had no idea how you felt about me” thing seem just slightly unrealistic to me, personally. I did really enjoy the manner in which David and Jean finally came together – cramming a massive amount of 24/7 working over a weekend to get a proposal done and then nearly collapsing from sheer exhaustion. That bit of the romance was delightful and I really enjoyed it.

I was pleased that Beth’s character was an interesting and complex mixture of various facets, not just a flat-out villain. While sure, a horrible and manipulative person she added a complexity and serious element of conflict to the plot that kept the whole “ex-fiancee who isn’t completely ex” aspect from feeling too clichéd to me. Had Beth’s character been more straight-forward, and less manipulative and well written, the whole subplot of her and David’s newly-broken relationship could have easily fallen flat to me – and not worked nearly so well. But I feel the author did a really good job of twisting things just enough to keep my interest and not have me feeling that David acted a bit stupidly or that Jean over-reacted too much. I was really quite impressed with how that section of the story was handled and along with the interesting main characters really helped lift this into an engaging and interesting read for me.

Sexy and with plenty of conflict and romance this is a great story and one I really enjoyed.

Two souls, two secrets, one happy ending?

I’m new to the work of Morgan Malone and this was a great introduction. The writing flowed well and once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down. I fell in love with the characters and needed to know what would happen next.

Missy is feisty, as described in the blurb. The woman knows what she wants and what she doesn’t. I liked her forthright approach. It was refreshing to read about an older heroine (over 25 yrs old) who had her head screwed on straight. I loved Missy immediately. Then there’s Don. This man… wow. I could see him and I would love to see him on the big screen. He’s sad, but sweet, a painter and the brooding… I was sucked right in. The chemistry between Don and Missy is fun, but tender, too. Oh and the cat. I loved Lady. She’s a pistol.

The cast of characters is wonderful and even though I hadn’t read the other books in the Barefoot Bay world, I didn’t feel lost. Great reading.

If you’re looking for a warm holiday read that’s perfectly quick, but just right, then this might be the one for you.

This is an interesting read and quite different from a number of paranormals that I usually read. While the shifter culture and paranormal aspects of the story is definitely front and center, having the characters all living in a small town gives it a bit of a different feel to my mind. This is a book in the middle of a series, but I feel that there’s plenty of explanation around the characters and who they are, as well as how they’re all interconnected. I feel readers who have read some of the previous stories might get more out of this story but it can still be read by itself as its own story. I was a little disappointed that there was no explicit sex in the story – but there’s plenty of chemistry and steamy kisses between Toren and Zeus that kept the heat level sensual and steamy.

I loved Zeus’ character, large and strong but soft and protective in his heart, he’s the classic gentle giant – even if he would happily rip someone’s throat out while protecting those he loves. There’s quite a mystery for much of the story revolving around Toren, but it was clear to me that Toren and Zeus were made for each other. I was particularly impressed at how well Zeus managed to balance his responsibilities as beta of the pack, his loyalty and love for the alpha, his love for his small family but also the new feelings of protective responsibility Zeus felt for Toren. I feel it would have been easy for this to be badly handled – so I was pleased and impressed that I felt the author did a good job. Zeus didn’t lie or evade the alpha or his responsibilities, but neither did he back down or bow to one side and ignore the other. I really liked how Zeus managed to meet everyone’s needs while being honest but also sticking to his protector/beta responsibilities. And his willingness to not make snap judgments and also trust his own instincts really helped make this an excellent story to my mind.

With a bunch of interesting and complicated characters, a really good, solid plot woven properly through the story and a steamy romance this was a great story that checked a lot of my favourite boxes. I will happily be rereading this book again in the near future.

Leaning into him, she whispered, “We can renew our acquaintance in all ways that count.”

“So you’ll agree to bed me but not wed me?”

“For the moment.” She tapped her fingers lightly on his chest. “Would that be such a hardship on you?”

Sighing, he pulled a face. “I suppose not.” A flash of his boyish grin made her stomach drop. “May I woo you properly, at least?”

“Improperly would be more to my taste.” Fanny returned his smile with one of her own, as sultry and seductive as she could make it. “But I suppose some decorous behavior wouldn’t kill me either.”

“Good.” He took her hands and raised them to his lips. “I leave for Brighton at the end of the week. I’d hoped you’d be accompanying me as my wife, but that—”

“As your wife?” How arrogant of him to think she’d fall into his arms at the snap of his fingers.

“Well? Will you meet me in Brighton?” Matthew’s eager voice brought her back to the dim room now filled with possibilities.

“I will be happy to journey to Brighton, my lord. If I find you there, I do hope you will attend me most earnestly.” In a heart’s beat she slipped her hands from his, pulled his lips down to hers, and sealed the pact with a kiss so warm and sweet her resolve slipped a notch. “And now if you’ll excuse me?” Turning swiftly on her toes, Fanny raced for the door. As she grasped the handle, she glanced back at him.

The victorious grin on his face sent a shiver down her spine. She pulled the door open and fled into the corridor before she could change her mind.

Anticipation seeped into Layla’s body, increasing with every second that ticked by. Each handhold she groped for, each push off with her feet brought her that bit closer to the moorland plateau she’d been wanting to explore ever since she’d seen photos of it in a Facebook group a few weeks ago. She was a keen hiker—or walker, she’d never really understood what the difference was between the two—but she’d always stuck to places she knew well, or had at least visited a couple of times before, mainly because she always walked alone, and getting lost was bad enough without doing it by yourself.

But one Sunday evening, after a flurry of yet more stunning photographs of the area had been uploaded to the group, Layla made up her mind. The following Sunday, she would join the seemingly scores of people that headed up to the dramatic-looking gritstone edge in Derbyshire’s Peak District every weekend, no matter the weather. Hikers, climbers, fell runners… they all raved about the place, despite the crowds. And if she did get lost, well, she’d just ask one of them for directions. No problem. Then, providing it was indeed as amazing as the photo-uploaders proclaimed it to be, she’d add it to her list of regular haunts. It’d make a refreshing change from her usual low-level trail walks.

Now she was beginning to understand what all the fuss was about, and she wasn’t even at the top yet. After leaving the relative familiarity of the car park, she’d trekked up a slight incline through some dense woods—surprised to pass only one or two small groups of people on the way. She’d expected it to look like London’s Oxford Street but with outdoorsy types in hefty boots and backpacks instead of shoppers with umbrellas and carrier bags. The moment she’d stepped from the shadow of the woods, the landscape had opened up in front of her and she’d got a real sense of how special it was. Then she’d glanced up and to her right and, taking in the height of the edge she had yet to climb, realised she hadn’t seen the half of it yet.

With one last push to get her onto a particularly large boulder, then a small step, she was there. On the gritstone edge, the moorland plateau—whatever you wanted to call it. As she took a couple of tentative steps forward and looked around, she decided she wanted to call it heaven. It was like nowhere she’d ever been before—so removed from everyday life that she was half convinced she’d stepped onto the moon, except it was unmistakably England. Wild, untamed, rugged, but England nonetheless. How had she never been up here before? And were there more places like it? She suddenly felt like the worst kind of ignorant city dweller—her walks up until now had made a mockery of wearing walking boots. She may as well have done it in flip flops.

She turned at the sound of voices behind her, and moved aside to let a group of three men in their early twenties pass. They had enormous, weirdly-shaped bags strapped to their backs, and yet strode along—exchanging smiles and nods with her when they drew level—as though their burdens weighed nothing.

Layla shook her head incredulously and started to follow in their footsteps. She didn’t need to consult her walk instructions yet—there was only one path, deliberately keeping footfall to a dedicated area for conservation purposes, according to a snippet of text she remembered reading on her printout. The trail stayed close to the edge—not so close as to be dangerous, but close enough to afford the most amazing views. The ground beneath her feet was made up of mud, rough grasses, rocks and boulders in shades of grey, brown, and black, scrubby bushes, and what she suspected was heather. To her left, the stunning countryside went on for as far as the eye could see, with delightfully twisted trees in the foreground, followed by brown and green fields, woodlands, moorlands, and more fields, broken up only very occasionally by a road—often only identifiable by the moving glint of light that passed along them—vehicles highlighted by the reflection of the sun off their metalwork. It’d be incredibly easy to forget civilisation even existed while she was up here.

Freya can’t afford commitment. She’s deep in debt to a dangerous man and she refuses to drag anyone else into her mess. But Nathan Slater is forcing his way into her life and her problems—and Freya has to admit, she kinda likes it.

He won’t be told no.

Slater is used to being in control. Freya Markham is testing his limits. But Freya’s problems could destroy her, and Slater just can’t let that happen. He’s going to fix things, whether she likes it or not.

Freya and Slater are a bit different than what I usually read. For example, though Slater has a fully fledged successful career, but he is also a prospect. For readers who have not read an MC book before, prospects are basically assistants or interns of the MC world. That in itself is not the usual part. Freya’s father is a neurologist and she had wanted to do the same thing. These folks were successful in their own right, so seeing them as part of the MC was different.

However, their relationship smolders. It is there in the background but it is not the main theme or topic. Unlike some erotic books I have read I liked reading this a lot more because it was not constant sex. I could see the relationship build in the small things he does and doesn’t do.

The thing I disliked was that it took a lot longer than I thought to get through the first half of the book as it dragged a bit. That being said the ending was well worth the time it took.

This is a part of a series which could be read as a stand-alone. I recommend this to any reader who wants a bit of the erotic but does not want it to overpower the story.

Top Ten Tuesday: Winter 2018 TBR

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

My TBR list has been exploding with exciting new titles to add to it recently. This winter is shaping up to be an excellent time for whittling that list down to something more manageable again. Today I wanted to share some of the titles I’m looking forward to reading the most between now and the end of winter as they’re released.

1. Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss

Release Date: January 8

The characters in this book will be doing something I’ve been curious about for many years: purposefully living the same way people did back in the Paleolithic era, stone tools and all. That was more than enough of a lure to convince me to grab this as soon as it becomes available.

2. Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee

Release Date: January 15

It’s so interesting to think about the logistics of hiding something like the ability to shape-shift. I’d never want to use this ability at all because of how easy it would be for a passing neighbor to peek onto my property at the wrong time and realize that I wasn’t as ordinary as I seemed.

3. Talk to Me by John Kenney

Release Date: January 15

Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. The main character of this tale made a series of minor  mistakes over many years that eventually caused serious and possibly permanent damage to his relationships with his wife and children. Then he made a huge error that cost him his job. The thought of someone starting over with nothing so late in life piques my interest.

4. No One Here Is Lonely by Sarah Everett

Release Date: January 22

Grief is one of those experiences that all humans eventually share but is also hard to describe to someone who hasn’t been through it yet. I’m intrigued by the thought of still being able to communicate with a virtual version of a loved one. It’s not clear to me whether that would make it easier or more difficult to say goodbye to them, but I’m curious to find out.

5. The Love & Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan

Release Date: January 29

I definitely don’t condone lying in general, but I am looking forward to getting to know the main character of this tale better. The blurb talked about why she felt the need to hide her true self from her family, and the reasons it gave were pretty understandable. I’d like to know more about her culture and find out whether she’ll ever be able to be honest with her parents.

6. On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

Release Date: February 5

I feel like I’ve been waiting for this book to be released for a decade. Given how much audiences loved The Hate U Give, her first novel, I think this is going to be a great read and a smashing success for Ms. Thomas.

7. The Fever King by Victoria Lee

Release Date: March 1

The thought of magic being spread virally makes this something I’m quite curious to check out. I’d never heard of something like that before, but it sure would change the way people thought about magic and what it means to be able to do it. Will these characters think of magic as a disease or a blessing?

8. Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi

Release Date: March 5

This is a modern-day retelling of Hansel & Gretel. As soon as I read that part of the blurb, I knew it was a must-read for me. There can never be too many retellings of classic fairy tales if you ask me.

9. Instructions for a Funeral: Stories by David Means

Release Date: March 5

Short story collections grab my attention easily in general. This specific anthology looks like it’s going to touch on some particularly poignant themes about mental illness, family, and grief.

10. The Weight of the Stars by K. Ancrum

Release Date: March 15

Not only is this about one of my favourite branches of science, astronomy, but it looks like it might be about someone’s first love as well. I always enjoy seeing how characters react to this sort of experience.

What are you looking forward to reading this winter?
