When they were young together back in their werecat pride, Bowie and Channing experimented with love and sex, as well as flirting with a threesome with their best friend Andy. Channing and Andy both ran from their needs, leaving Bowie to break away and find his own life. Now a confident Dom, Bowie discovers Channing again through a video of a consummate sub, one Bowie knows he needs to find once more.

When Bowie shows up on his doorstep, Channing feels like a teenager again, all confusion and need. He doesn’t date his own kind, only humans, and he’s not in the market for a full-time Master. Bowie is impossible to deny, a force of nature, and while both men know they’ll have to think about Andy eventually, now is the time to see if they can get to know and love each other all over again.

Bowie might have been young, but he knew exactly who he was and what he wanted – and he wanted a kinky threesome with his beta, Andy and their omega Channing. Except Andy and Channing hadn’t been on the same page and so their ménage had blown up before it really got going. Years later, Bowie had found out that both Andy and Channing were fully into the lifestyle, active in the BDSM scene. This time, Bowie didn’t have a clear plan in mind, but he’s determined to face Channing and reclaim the two men who had broken his heart all those years ago.

This is an interesting and fast-moving short story that I really enjoyed. It feels very much like the first in a two-part story. While Andy isn’t actually present at all in this story his character – the knowledge of him and Andy’s place in this broken threesome – makes me feel very much as if the specter of him is an important part of this story. Channing and Bowie were interesting and colourful characters that I enjoyed seeing come together after a number of years apart. I enjoyed watching them interact now they were both all grown up and determined to take what they both craved so badly.

A part of me was disappointed that Bowie and Channing didn’t go together to include Andy in their renewing the threesome – but I can completely understand why the author left this for the next book. Bowie, Andy and Channing had quite a complicated history and a lot of baggage to work through – so I feel Channing’s story would have been shortchanged had Andy’s been crammed in to this story. And while frustrating – my eagerness for Andy’s tale to be added to this threesome is probably exactly the reaction the author (and publisher!) wants.

The sex is smoking hot and deliciously kinky. Best of all the characters were intense, realistic and I was almost immediately drawn to them and invested in their happiness. This was a quick-paced and interesting story and I am eagerly waiting for the next installment. A lovely, kinky story that I can absolutely recommend.

But just when every detail is under control, Scaredy’s Action Plan takes a surprising — and ?toothy? — turn. Will he survive this ordeal? Will he find his kindred spirit? Will he discover the true meaning of friendship? Read Scaredy’s nutty story to find out …

Social anxiety is something that affects people of all ages, so I loved the fact that this story had so much compassion and understanding for the main character. Scaredy Squirrel explained all of the precautions he’d take before going anywhere new in the opening scene. The nice thing about that description was how matter-of-fact it was. He knew he needed to do these things in order to have enough courage to step out of his comfort zone, and he was completely open about all of the steps he’d take before leaving home every time he went out to make friends. I really liked that about this character.

There was only one small part of this tale that I wish had been written a little differently, and it had to do with Scaredy Squirrel’s original plans to make a new friend. He had such a firm idea of what it was going to be like and who he would be spending time with that I would have enjoyed a little more closure for this original plotline since he talked about it so much in the beginning. With that being said, this was a very minor criticism of something I adored overall.

The character development was wonderful. Social anxiety isn’t something that magically goes away on its own, but there are things that kids and adults can do to reduce its impact on their lives if they’re willing to put some time into it. I was so happy with how this character grew as an individual while at the same time remaining true to himself. It sent such a positive message to anyone who reads this who has similar concerns about meeting new people.

This book is part of a series, but it can be read on its own or out of order.

Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend is a must-read for anyone who has ever felt anxious about doing something out of the ordinary.

When the husband of a prominent Boston art museum curator goes missing, his wife contacts our PI asking him to find him. She insists the investigation must be secret. No one is to know that her American Indian artist husband disappeared—there is to be no publicity that could reflect badly on the artist’s reputation, or her social status.

Our PI senses something deeper is wrong. Why not report him missing to the police? If it is foul play, surely the police should get involved. Perhaps his disillusionment with his professional life after his wife’s passing drives him to do a job he normally wouldn’t. Experience tells him to walk away, but the client lures him in.

A touching tale of intrigue that takes our PI from small town America to the remoteness of South Australia in his search for the missing man where he finds more than he expected.

It is not only a detective story, it is a story about lost-and-found—people as well as emotions—love and the desire for affection. It looks at issues involving racism, fringe politics, people’s station in life, and ethics—contrasting the PI’s personal morality with public values.

After the death of his wife, our PI hero feels like he’s being taken on the winds of change – uprooted and cast adrift to find a new place to settle down. Feeling dissatisfied with his job as a consultant, he takes on the case of a missing husband on the sly. As the case unwinds our hero finds himself taken from the US to Australia and on a journey he’ll never forget.

I enjoyed this book. Written very much like a hard-boiled detective novel in the first-person perspective it took me a while to settle down to the fact we never discover our hero’s name. While this bothered me a little, it somehow seemed to really fit in with the Sam Spade/Harry Bosch/noir detective type feel that the book as a whole had for me. And it honestly didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the story too much at all.

There’s a fair bit of philosophical monologue scattered throughout the story – talk of our hero’s atheism and his beliefs on Fate and chance, the randomness that is life that pieces together with how we each deal with the good and bad luck we’re handed. This isn’t strictly a straight-detective novel and while I enjoyed the fact our PI had a broad and open mind, it was an odd juxtaposition between a liberal and open minded hero and the older style of hard-boiled writing and mystery. I did like this paradox but I have to admit it felt a little strange reading it, with the writing and ambience all noir/gritty mystery and then our hero freely expressing his opinion on how women could just as easily emotionally and mentally abuse their husbands as men physically abuse women. While the writing might be delightfully old-fashioned and hard – the plot and viewpoints are incredibly modern and liberal. I both enjoyed this and found it unusual.

The plot got a lot more interesting – and a lot more political – when the Australian connection came about and while I was impressed with how the author handled such delicate matters as the Indigenous relations and land issues, a lot of this side of the plot was quite dense, emotional and complicated. I really feel that readers looking for a light and fun mystery – or a more straight-forward noir/gritty detective story might find the political and Indigenous aspect of this books plot a little heavy for casual reading. I truly feel the author did an amazing job – he neither skimmed over these important issues, nor are there pages of thickly complicated activist sermons, but this plotline is a lot heavier and more politically complicated than what I would consider normal in a mystery or romance story. I feel readers looking for more meat in their plot – or who are interested in political stories revolving around the Indigenous communities – will find this interesting and satisfying. It’s not the sort of story I’d recommend to pass an idle sunny afternoon as some happy brain fluff or a quick “pick me up” type of read.

While there is an element of romance in this story, I feel this book strongly sits in the Mystery category. Our PI hero, coupled with the very strong plotline and the fact the story pretty much revolves around finding a missing husband all weigh this book in my opinion as a Mystery. There is an element or two of romance in it and while there is some love-making it’s fairly brief and I don’t feel it’s at all written explicitly. I was personally happy with this being a strong mystery book with a political plotline and only a dash of romance – but readers who are looking for something more focused on the romance and relationships might not find this fits what they’re seeking.

“Try it.” Zelus nodded. “It’s not hard stuff. Just wine from Olympus.”

Oh Jesus. He’d heard this line of bullshit before. His friends wanted to sell their story about Olympus, but he wasn’t buying. He refused to drink. “If I down that, I might believe you and there’s no way that’s happening.”

Kay shrugged. “It’ll make you feel better.”

“To know you’re lying or to get drunk?” Charlie asked. “Olympus, Gods, statues … it’s not right to dick with people.”

Bia took a swig. “I get it.” She stayed beside him. “You think things are one way, then they go sideways. We keep trying to convince you to believe us, but we don’t show you what’s real.” She rested her head on his shoulder. “You’re right to be concerned.”

“Yeah.” He didn’t understand, but she seemed to care. He took the flask. Maybe drinking would help. He’d forget his problems for a while. Sure, the issues would still be there, but he’d have a respite. He tipped his head back and the sweet liquid slid down his throat. The drink reminded him of apples, but with spice. Not cider, though. His mouth chilled, but the liquid warmed his soul. His head swam. “I should stop.” He downed another swig. “Really.” But he wanted more.

“Then stop.” Kay took the flask. “Feel better?”

“Not really.” He leaned back against the foot of the statue. If he wasn’t mistaken, her foot felt warm. Real. Not possible. This had to be a figment of his imagination or a result of the drink. His mind was playing tricks on him. But why was he so horny all the sudden? Booze never made him want to hump everything in sight.

“Let’s get you home.” Zelus offered his arm. “Come on.”

“No.” He shook his head and blinked. “Did you drug me?”

“It’s the nectar of the gods.” Camden laughed. “Not drugs. Good, though, isn’t it?”

“It’s wine.” Andy helped Zelus hoist Charlie to his feet. “The wine amplifies your heart’s desire. You’re not drunk, I promise.”

He allowed them to help him to stand, but he shook his head. Life seemed to slow down. He blinked again. The horniness increased. He wriggled free from the guys. Neither could help him with his suddenly overactive libido. All six individuals were taken and none of them turned him on. “I don’t get it. There’s something wrong with me. I can’t find anyone to love me.” Why was he telling them this? He whooped, then faced the statue. “I bet I can’t even turn this statue on.” He hopped onto the base of the sculpture, standing nose to nose with the woman. “See?” He kissed her. “Think you can love me, baby? I’ll fuck you senseless, but I want to wear your clothes and have you fuck me, too. Isn’t that messed up?” He kissed the statue again. “See?” He glanced back at his friends. “She isn’t interested. No one is.” Oh well. Love, even with a statue wasn’t in his future. Such was life…

I picked up the chamberstick and paused in the halcyon room. The grin in the peeled paint of the flagstones seemed an assurance of victory, and now the grin was my own. Smiling wide, I went upstairs. The soft click of the cellar door latch echoed in the still house, which was quickly darkening inside from the setting sun. Patches of faded evening light filtered through the leaden windows and crisscrossed the hallway. My insides buzzed with gleeful mischief. I rounded the corner in the foyer to go upstairs, only to find Lucius seated on the bottom step. The sight of him was like a bucket of ice water had been dumped on my back. I quickly hid my smile and gripped the handle of the chamberstick. His pale, yellow-blue eyes burned with joy and his hair framed his face in what I used to think resembled a halo. Now I saw it for what it really was—a wispy, dirty aura of ill-will. His clothes were rumpled. His once white shirt was torn and stained brown, and his face glowed with the kind of mirth only given to victors.

“My prodigal son!” His tone was cheerful and incongruously warm. He stood and licked his lips, snuffed out my candle and pulled me into a tight embrace.

An acrid pool of bitterness lapped at my insides from his touch. My back teeth began to grind. He patted my shoulder and licked my ear. I stifled a gag and pulled away from his grasp. That same oily, rotten, muddy smell I’d found in his room seemed to leech from his pores. My eyes burned as I caught a whiff of it, and my nose crinkled in abject disgust at his condition.

“Such a stone-cold heart.” He smirked. “Although you’ve broken mine, I still love what special kind of monster I made you.” He put his hands on my shoulders, held me in place and stared into my eyes.

I tried fighting Lucius once, over one hundred years ago. The failed attempt put me underground for several months, too weak to hunt anything but the rats in the crypt. My ribs still bear the scars of his paternal rage. They throbbed at the memory. The thought of him nearly destroying me again struck fear into my bones. I tried to keep my voice emotionless and steady.

“What do you want, Father?” I asked.

“Thanks to your espionage, I’ve effectively neutered The Quartermaine.” He dropped his hands and straightened out his shirtsleeves. They were caked with mud. Strands of what appeared to be cat fur peppered the front ruffles of his shirt.

He seemed to take no notice of me, far too drunk on his speciously assured victory.

I pushed passed him and started up the stairs. “That’s wonderful, Father.” I said over my shoulder and tried not to glare at him or worse—divorce his head from his neck with my bare hands. I willed myself to stop grinding my teeth. If my actions in any way clued him in to my deception, he’d put me underground for decades.

“Oh, Talcott?”

The blue blood in my veins stopped cold.

“As a reward for your, I don’t know, what is this? Change of heart? It doesn’t matter.” His hands fluttered and his brow knitted. He pursed his lips before a fanged smile took over his face again. “I give you Trina.”

I stopped on the steps and quickly turned away from him. My eyes burned red and a tear of joy threatened to fall. Now I could do with her as I wished without catching the ire of the Scion Hive! I bit my tongue to keep from smiling and turned around.

“Father, I thank you for your beneficence.” I bowed. The piece of black coal beneath my ribs nearly burst with happiness.

Lucius laughed, shook his head and put his hand to his chest. “Your formality is so endearing.” He pulled a small, weathered, coffin-shaped box from his pants pocket and smirked.

My eyes widened. “You . . . you didn’t eat it?” I asked, lunging for the box.

Whoever devoured the heart of a freshly turned vampire gained their strength and held sway over their free will, rendering them the property of the consumer. My nerves electrified and pulsed at the prospect of gorging on Trina’s desiccated heart.

Lucius pulled the box just out of my reach and the contents made a sickening thud inside. I started to salivate like a mangy dog begging for table scraps.

“Say you’re sorry, and I’ll let you eat it,” Lucius said, his face hard and unflinching.

My hand clenched around the chamberstick. I went back down the steps and knelt before him. Humiliation burned and lashed at my jowls.

“I ate yours that night in the trenches whilst you slumbered, meek and young as a kitten.” He put his cold hand over the crown of my head. “Your soul tasted like,” he smacked his lips, “mhm, crisp leaves in the fall, and just a hint of an all-consuming love.”

The sound of his claws ripping soft flesh and Ilse’s curdled scream boomed within my memory. A tear fell from my eye and hit the floor. I stared at it through a watery lens as he continued unabated.

“I only ever tasted it again when I met your Ilse.”

I grit my teeth in rage. My back molar cracked as I started to stand. His hand gripped my head, and he pushed me down and held me in position. White-hot pain flared throughout my jaw and a dull ache assaulted my knees. My hands shook and the sharp edges of the chamberstick handle cut into my palm. I tasted ashen blood on my tongue as I bit into it and groaned.

“I’m still forever grateful to you for leading me to her. Your turning, finished off with her death?” He chuckled. “The most delectable, two-course meal I’ve ever had. I haven’t had anything so fresh and natural since before the industrial revolution. Everyone’s so polluted now.” His talons crushed my temples and a scream caught in my throat.

Murderous lust ignited within my veins.

The Cuff & Spurs Night Club was just your everyday, average, ordinary club—with kinky hot sex tossed in.

The members’ only club was decorated with a cowboy motif, pretty much like almost every other establishment in Jackson Hole. Not that Cora Roberts was complaining; she found the flair for Western-themed décor was part of this town’s charm.

Cuffs & Spurs was the only business she was aware of in town that was located and operated below ground. Then again, it was a private establishment and the general population was not permitted to enter. For all she knew the stores along the main drive could all have secret basements with operating businesses in them.

Up the stairs on the first floor was the Teton Cowboy Bar & Grill. The popular restaurant for tourists and locals alike helped to finance this nightclub. Both places were owned by Spencer Collins, her cousin on her mother’s side and the reason she had lucked into this job.

Spencer had done a lot for Cora upon her moving back to their old stomping ground.

The bar along the far-right wall was a lake of glossy golden wood with brass trim and fixtures. Overhead there were chandeliers crafted like wagon wheels, hung horizontally with glass cylinders on top that resembled the old-style kerosene lanterns. Even the bulbs inside were shaped like flames.

Hard rock music—there was some old-school Rod Stewart currently playing—pumped from hidden speakers in the paneled wooden walls.

The barstools were the most unique feature of the bar; they were saddles, as in going for a trail ride horse saddle. And on each stool there were silver loops in various positions for a Dom to restrain their submissive. Scene areas were cordoned off along the wall opposite the bar with black velvet rope.

There was a seating area with umber brown leather couches the color of dark tree bark and Western style décor tables in complementary colored golden woods. It reminded her of a gentleman’s study, all masculine in design with a splice of Western flair. The constant hum of conversation was overshadowed by the slap of flesh and moans.

Cora didn’t mind the bump and grind action taking place in the scene areas, the small alcoves partitioned off with thick black velvet rope. Inside the separated areas was dungeon sex style furniture designed with the kinkster in mind, which attendees used to live out their sexual fantasies. And not just any kind of sex, this was the ‘tie me up, tie me down’ style of action. The fact that this club catered to those in the BDSM lifestyle was a minor trifling issue in the scheme of it all. Whips, chains, copious amounts of flesh on display, and dungeon sex furniture didn’t make Cora blush or embarrassed. Nor did witnessing the myriad number of blow jobs and all manner of raunchy sex, not when her tips waiting tables were more than she would make anywhere else in this town. A job was a job. And she needed the cash. Who cared if she had to address the guys as Sir? For the money she was making, she’d call them whatever the hell they wanted her to.

Then there was the added bonus of the sheer amount of masculine eye candy on display. For Cora, it was as if she had stepped into a fantasy. Like the rugged outdoors of Jackson Hole, Wyoming had imbued the male club members with an extra dollop of testosterone the size of one of the nearby mountains. They were men who exuded control, masters of the world around them, including the women who were lucky enough to catch their eye. If the blissed-out expressions on the submissives’ faces were any indication, a woman could do worse than hooking up with the tough-as-nails manly men at the club.

There once was a bear, a moose and a beaver who were the best of friends, though they often disagreed. So when the three friends go canoeing together one sunny day, it doesn’t take long for them to start quarreling with one another. First, they can’t decide who should get to steer the canoe. Later, they debate how best to get across a beaver dam that blocks their way. But when they can’t agree on the proper course for maneuvering through the white-water rapids they suddenly find themselves in, the consequences become truly perilous. It takes a long, uncomfortable night spent stranded on a rock to remind the bear, the moose and the beaver what they often forget: everything turns out better when they work together as a team.

There’s more than one way to move a canoe up a creek.

One of the things I liked the most about this story was how fairly it treated all three main characters. Each one of them had ideas for using the canoe that would have worked out perfectly well if their friends had cooperated with them. This wasn’t a case of one animal having better ideas than the others. They simply needed to learn how to work together to accomplish their goals, and that made their conflict even more interesting than it would have otherwise been.

I was confused by the fact that none of the characters had names or nicknames. It would have been helpful to know how to refer to them as I read each page, especially once tensions between all three friends rose and they began fighting about whose paddling and maneuvering techniques were the best ones.

The plot twists kept me giggling. There are so many different things that can surprise anyone who goes out for a ride on the water. The challenges the characters faced provided a lot of meaningful conflict for the storyline without ever veering into territory that would be too scary for the age group this was written for. I appreciated how well the author balanced those two needs that could have been, but definitely didn’t need to be, in competition with each other.

Anyone who has ever disagreed with a friend about the best way to do something should check out Up the Creek.

Princess Izta had many wealthy suitors but dismissed them all. When a mere warrior, Popoca, promised to be true to her and stay always by her side, Izta fell in love. The emperor promised Popoca if he could defeat their enemy Jaguar Claw, then Popoca and Izta could wed. When Popoca was near to defeating Jaguar Claw, his opponent sent a messenger to Izta saying Popoca was dead. Izta fell into a deep sleep and, upon his return, even Popoca could not wake her. As promised Popoca stayed by her side. So two volcanoes were formed: Iztaccíhuatl, who continues to sleep, and Popocatépetl, who spews ash and smoke, trying to wake his love.

Can true love overcome any obstacle in its path?

Popoca was such a brave and persistent character. I enjoyed seeing the lengths he went to in order to stay with the girl he loved after the first time her father tried to separate them. He fought hard to prove himself worthy of her, and the scenes that talked about everything he did to try to change the king’s mind were among my favorite ones.

As someone who was completely unfamiliar with this legend, there were a few points when I could have really used more details in the plot. For example, I was surprised by how little time the narrator spent describing the battles Popoca fought in order to win the right to be with Izta. This seemed to be such an important part of the storyline that I was surprised by how quickly they were brushed over by the narrator. It sure would have been nice to know how he won those fights.

What a beautiful ending this book had. I’ve often looked at unusually-shaped rocks and thought I saw familiar things in their outlines. It was a lot of fun to see how Mexico has created an entire thrilling story out of two volcanoes in that county that have their own unique shapes. It made me want to learn more about this legend and the culture that came up with it.

I’d recommend The Princess and the Warrior: A Tale of Two Volcanoes to anyone who loves mythology.

Prologue

Something ominous approached the planet Arn. A dark, ethereal presence spread across the cosmic sky.

As twelve golden rings appeared around the planet, each one bigger than the last, an Ancient, draped in white and gold, emerged from the outer ring. She hovered before the darkness and raised her Sceptre.

“UnderLord Maliceius, abandon this attempt to spread your vile shadow. I command it on behalf of the Ancient Realms.”

The dark ether surged forward, pulling its mass inwards to double its height. “The Ancient Realms will not stop me this time,” the UnderLord hissed.

The Ancient raised her head. “You do not frighten me, UnderLord. The Light will always prevail. You cannot succeed.” She brought her Sceptre in close and whispered “Alodin Zoinda,” and her Sceptre responded with a piercing light that radiated towards the darkness. “Retreat now or embrace the Light,” she declared.

The UnderLord Maliceius recoiled from the opposing rays. “Your efforts to stop my expansion across the universe will be futile. I will blacken the precious dreams you so faithfully protect. And I will become the Master.”

His dark mass billowed and swelled backwards as he slowly retreated from the planet Arn. An evil drone sounded from the darkness before he instantly disappeared.

As each golden ring receded, a colossal Ancient appeared and slowly they gathered themselves in a circle.

Satisfied that the UnderLord was gone, the Ancient, Varta, turned to each of them. “It has begun. We must institute the Protocol at once.”

“We must retain the integrity of dreams,” Soto declared.

“Agreed,” said Varta. “The dreams are paramount. It was only a matter of time before he returned… His nature does not allow otherwise.”

A deep sigh reverberated out into the Universe, the first in aeons.

Varta raised her Sceptre up high, initiating a discharge of violet light out into the cosmos. “It is done,” she said.
