Greetings! I want to thank Long and Short Reviews and your readers for the opportunity to share a little bit about me, China and my new release The Temple of Heaven. To celebrate I’ll be doing a giveaway across my blog tour: 3 e-books of The Great Wall, 5 e-books of Finally Fallen, and a $20 gift card to Dreamspinner. (Details about the giveaway are below.)

I lived in Suzhou China for almost six years. My time there was filled with incredible wonderful experiences and I adored so many of the people I met. But I also know there’s no place like home. (For me, that’s the USA).

When we first moved there (2006) Suzhou wasn’t connected to Shanghai by the highway or train so it took about 2.5 hours to get there. Suzhou had yet to be named an AAAA tourist destination which it was in 2009ish. AAAA means the government poured money into Suzhou for infrastructure, growth, and beautification.

Though Suzhou was plenty incredible before the government attention. After all, eighteen of the Emperors Gardeners retired to Suzhou and designed their own gardens there which are for everyone to enjoy. Chinese gardens are like stepping into a watercolor. The gardeners understood the art of landscaping. Suzhou was nicknamed the Venice of the East because of all the canals that run through the city.

Although as much as I can gush about China, I will admit everything was different. Sometimes only a little different and that allowed my expectations rise which gave me confidence in dealing with something effectively—only to crash and burn trying to do the simplest things. I got used to not ever getting quite what I wanted. Compromise and settling for almost were my mantra.

Things I didn’t expect:

*When I saw the exhibit on Suzhou China in SF’s Asian Museum (2004) and I said “I wish we lived there” I didn’t realize I was casting a spell. We moved there in 2006.

*In 2006 I couldn’t buy meat in Suzhou because it traveled from the port of Shanghai on unrefrigerated trucks, in super-hot humid Suzhou temperatures and after our third bout of food poisoning (NOT CAUSED BY MY COOKING) we ate in restaurants until the Japanese market came to Suzhou allowing me or my love to prepare meals at home.

*Restaurants were delicious, reasonably priced and they had access to refrigerated meat.

*Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Burger King, Starbucks, and KFC were everywhere in China.

*No bills. You have to go pay for water, gas, and electricity BEFORE you use it. Since we were the first expats at his company no one thought to tell us this fact because that’s what they’d always known. No idea the bills came after the fact in America. Well, I figured out you had to prepay when the water just stopped working one day… during a shower.

*China was a completely cash system in 2006 (especially in Suzhou). No checks, bank cards or credit charges. I carried stacks of cash especially for everything. (That thankfully changed over the six years we lived there).

*LGBTQIA doesn’t exist. My friends told me there is no gay in China. (Now statistically we know that’s impossible and the fact that I knew several people who liked people of the same sex didn’t change anyone’s mind.) The closet is extremely deep. It took my 5.5 years to find the rainbow club and there was only one in Suzhou.

*I was nicknamed Ling Long Laura > I lived at the end of Ling Long Street and my first name is Laura.

*My massage therapist worked some magic on my carpal tunnel scar tissue and stunned the surgeon. “I can see the scar but there’s no hardness… what did you do?” LOL I would get massages 2-3x a week.

*I LOVE a good sale and I found I was damned good at bargaining. (One of my local friends would have me buy his white tea because I could get a better price in the tea market than he could.)
The above problems may create several personal crises, so men should not fear because many of the problems can be the viagra pill price culprit for reducing lubrication and libido in general. Its main advantages are the small investment comparing to the conventional one it is cialis soft tabs quickly taken up by the doctor and make sure you confirm about the treatment and expect to enjoy a long life. It saves time and money and sometimes also comes with additional offers. cheap women viagra Due to commander cialis this, skin problem arises, for example acne.
*Our driver (the fact that I had a driver was beyond weird for me but we weren’t going to be good enough at reading or speaking Chinese to safely drive) but our driver said to me “Laura, you speak like a man.” I nodded happy that the language was not barrier to him seeing me.

*Our driver became my best friend…

Top 5 Unique Experiences I had while living in China

1) Being Center of Attention

Usually I happily fade into the background. In China my blonde hair, pale skin, and my blue eyes made that impossible. I became a curiosity people wanted to see… and touch. I started taking pictures of people taking pictures of me.

2) Travel: We were able to travel to Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, South Korea, Tibet, and varies places in China > that I never dreamed of getting to visit… but if you’re almost already there >> WHY NOT?

3) Massages: Having a lovely man named Guy Chuang walked on my back 2-3 times a week. (BTW here’s some TMI when someone walks on my ass I giggle… just saying I find it hysterical) When we first moved to Suzhou massages were $8/hour.

4) I had a housekeeper. I didn’t want one but I was basically told this woman couldn’t be reunited with her son if she didn’t have a second job… I gave her a job but with my obsessive need to clean I didn’t give her much work LOL.

5) Taking art lessons from an art professor. She spoke no English and I spoke only a little Chinese. At times, my teacher would hand over hand show me what she wanted me to do. My friend (& driver) had studied art when he was younger so he joined me at the end of each lesson so she could talk to me directly about my work. (Psst, in The Temple of Heaven Jordon takes a couple art lessons too but he’s more determined than I was to set his own boundaries. I just went along with what the teacher wanted me to do.)

Music is Tian Di’s life and his love, and he’s made plenty of sacrifices. His career is finally taking off with his band, Made in China, and he’ll continue to put music first… until he meets Jordon. Then insta- lust becomes insta-love and a commitment to the future—no matter how difficult it might be.

Jordon lives in a bubble constructed by his overprotective older brothers, who are so controlling that they’ve kept him from dating. A talented artist, Jordon managed to keep his success with a Japanese manga publisher a secret from his family, but now he fears discovery. It’s easier to let his brothers handle everything, but Jordon has reached his limit. He’s ready to draw some boundaries so he can be his own man and face all the challenges that come with that.

Their families and careers aren’t the only obstacles. Jordon must accept his identity as a gay man who doesn’t top or bottom. Fortunately, Tian Di—and his special talents—help Jordon open up to his sexuality in an erotic adventure that spans Japan and China, and with love, luck, hard work, and open minds, will end in a happily ever after.

Many hugs, Z.

What Would I Tell a New Author? by Bobbi Smith – Guest Blog and Giveaway

What would I tell a new author?

To all you aspiring writers out there, I am so excited for you. Being called to be an author is definitely a gift. I knew I was meant to write when I was 10. I was making up stories as a little kid, playing with my cowboys and Indians in the backyard. I had to write an autobiography in 5th Grade, and one of the questions the teacher asked us was – ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ I wrote – ‘I want to be a writer and I want to be a teacher.’ God bless Ms. Albrecht because she wrote on that page of my biography – ‘You can do both!’ And I have, between my 40+ books and teaching writing classes, I’ve fulfilled my dream. (P.S. I stapled my autobiography together, put a piece of colored paper on it for a cover and titled it ‘ME’, so it would look like a real book!)

Things have changed so drastically in publishing these days. Aspiring writers have a much greater chance of getting their books out there! With Amazon and all the other eBook publishers, the market it wide open and ready for you. Just make sure you write the best book you can. Make sure your research is accurate and have a proof-reader you trust go over your work with you. It’s always good to have that second pair of eyes checking for any mistakes you’ve made. (Like accidentally changing your heroine’s eye color half-way through the book, which I did, and thankfully the error was caught before I sent it in!) You want your story to be as perfect as possible for your readers, so they will be eagerly awaiting your next release!

As a first time author, I would say write the story of your heart. It’s the book you’re writing for yourself because you don’t know if you’ll sell it or not. It’s your passion. Love every moment of it.

Also, once you’ve gotten your book published, get yourself a website and start on-line advertising to get the word out about your title. There’s such a big market out there and you need to reach out to it and promote your book.

Good luck with your writing careers! I wish you great success!

April, 1865
Vicksburg, Mississippi

The newly freed Union soldiers trudged up the gangplank of the steamboat Sultana in seemingly endless numbers. Although the memories of their ordeal at Andersonville Prison Camp were painful, their mood was jubilant. The war was over. They were going home!

Onboard, a tall Yankee officer stood at the rail grimly watching the loading. Captain Price Richardson was frustrated and angry. He’d witnessed many acts of incompetence during his time in the army, but what was happening today was beyond belief. Price was enough of a river man to know it was foolhardy to challenge the Mississippi this way. Going upriver against the flood was hard on a steamboat, but on one seriously overloaded, it could be suicide.

Furious, Price turned to his friend, Lieutenant Jericho Cooper. “Don’t they have any idea of what they’re doing?”

“Do you think they’re overloading it?” Coop remarked sarcastically.

“They could load men on the other two steamers.”

Coop smiled wryly, as they watched column after column of men file aboard. “You have to remember the Department of the Army is in charge of this.”

Realizing they weren’t going anywhere soon, the two men sat down on the deck to await their departure.

As evening came, the Sultana, which should only have been carrying about 400 passengers, finally began her trip north against the swollen river with over 2,300 passengers and crew onboard.

YOU NEVER KNOW…

Bleeding Vengeance’s drummer, Roderick Powell knows he’s a sod for feeling glum, especially after moving into a beautiful new home in a smart Denver suburb. But all his mates are partnered or married, and dreadfully happy. It’s enough to make a rockstar rethink his options. And even though his sexy neighbor has given him the brush-off, he’s decided to have another go – at this point he has nothing left to lose, apart from his heart.

WHAT LIES BENEATH

Gwen Mason’s romantic past has been bumpier than most – twice divorced by thirty, she’s had enough of broken promises. An ER nurse who keeps a brutal schedule, she’s happy to become known as the neighborhood crazy cat lady. But…the most delicious man has moved next door. He’s British, he’s famous, he’s a rockstar. And, hard as she tries, Gwen can’t keep Rod Powell from breaking all her rules, and suddenly she sees a future she never believed possible.

Enjoy an Excerpt

When Gwen stepped out onto her porch, it seemed her neighbor, Mrs. Kersh, had the same idea. Gwen saw her striding across the street before Gwen looked over and saw the moving truck next door.

“Our new neighbor has finally arrived,” Mrs. Kersh said in a somewhat scolding tone, as if the new homeowner was tardy in taking up residence. “I do wish I’d been home to see more of the prospective buyers touring the property.”

Gwen nodded. As an ER nurse, she worked twelve-hour shifts alternating between three and four days a week and almost always on the weekends, when most people perused houses for sale. She’d been working during the open house, and also missed the people who came after to look at the home. “I hope whoever bought the place is a nice person.”

Mrs. Kersh huffed. “I hope they’re quiet and don’t have a dog. The last people were atrocious, leaving that mutt in the yard to yap all the time.”

The last people were also major jerks, Gwen thought as she watched the movers pile out of the truck and begin unloading furniture. Their barking dog and loud children had cost her precious hours of sleep. Still, she couldn’t help but give Mrs. Kersh a sideways smile and glance down at Molly, the little terrier that was ever at Mrs. Kersh’s side.

Mrs. Kersh’s eyes widened with blatant terror. “Oh no.”

An older silver Honda CR-V pulled behind the moving truck and a man got out with a happy smile and a proprietary gleam in his eyes as he met the moving truck with a fob of jingling keys.

Holy hotness. Gwen almost breathed the words aloud as her belly tilted at the sight of the man striding up the walkway of the house next door. Shoulder-length chocolate-brown hair framed a face that was worthy of a magazine cover. Gray eyes danced with a touch of mischief. His lips were arched and full, making it impossible not to think of kissing.

Which was something Gwen could never do, because aside from that not being neighborly, he was clearly too young for her. If he was older than twenty-five, Gwen would eat her scrubs.

International Guy, Volume 1 by Audrey Carlan – Q&A and giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Audrey Carlan who is celebrating today’s release of International Guy, Volume 1. Enter the Rafflecopter for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card plus a digital copy of the book.

Thanks for being here today! To start off, can you please tell us a little bit about your current project?

International Guy is a serial that is told through the eyes of our primary hero, Parker Ellis. He is known as the Dream Maker because he has a gift for making his clients dreams come true. His company, International Guy, Inc. focuses on helping rich clients throughout the world with unique and unorthodox problems, often in a life coach and love coach capacity. He is supported by his two business partners Bogart “Bo” Montgomery the resident Love Maker, and Royce Sterling who’s been dubbed the Money Maker. Each of the three men have special expertise and skillsets that are called upon as needed to aid the client of each book. In this serial the reader will get an erotic and exciting adventure as the men take on a new international city every installment.

Would you say this book showcases your writing style or is it a departure for you?

This was a bit of a different type of book for me because 90% of it is written in the hero’s point of view. Getting that deep into a male’s head and thought processes was challenging. I surprised myself some of the time with how intense it goes.

How did you ‘get to know’ your main characters? Did they ever surprise you?

My characters surprise me ALL of the time. I never know what they are going to throw at me next. When I sat down to write the story, even one of the secondary characters had a full name change from what I’d planned. He didn’t fit the name I had planned, nor did his background. With Parker, the hero for this series, I had planned to have him be overly alpha and demanding and he became the exact opposite. He’s now a man you’d want in your life because of what he can share with you and how he listens and analyzes a situation. He’s extremely thoughtful in his approach but also very confident which I find sexy as hell!

What was the most difficult scene to write?

In an upcoming title in the series, Washington DC, the characters encounter a company that has some seriously horrible business practices that involve the beauty industry, politics and animal cruelty. That was hard to research let alone write but according to my editors and beta readers, I brought it all together beautifully and it’s now one of the best installments. I find a lot in the process of writing a manuscript that the hardest things can often be the most crucial to the story as well as beautiful.

What was your favorite scene to write?

There’s a scene in New York where Parker knocks on the door of his new client, Skyler Paige’s house. She happens to be his celebrity crush and an actress that has lost the will to act. When she opens the door, she thinks it’s her best friend coming back because she forgot something, so she doesn’t bother to cover up and she’s only wearing a tank and a skimpy pair of panties. The conversation and sexual tension on Parker’s part, and embarrassment on Skyler’s part makes for a hilariously sexy scene.

Can you list some things that inspired this book? Perhaps a location or celebrity crush?

The entire book was inspired by my world travels for Calendar Girl promotions. I’ve been to 10 out of the 12 cities in the series I wrote about in the series. Every place I traveled gave me a new experience to share with the readers through the eyes of my characters.

As for the celebrity look-a-likes, I used the cover model Forest Harrison as my Parker Ellis and Zoey Deutch for Sophie Rolland and Olivia Holt for Skyler Paige. I even used one of my editors likeness and name for the princess in Copenhagen, Book 3. I love to add in names of my readers and friends when I can. Makes the books more personal for me.

What project are you working on next?

Actually, when I finish the last installment of International Guy next month, I plan to take a good long break! I’ve been writing this series and Lotus House nonstop for over two years. I need to give my muse some chill time. Plus, I’d like to write a couple standalones because I’ve never done that and maybe start the three spin offs I plan to write for the secondary characters in International Guy.

My name is Parker Ellis. You can call me The Dream Maker. This is where my story begins.

There’s a world of women waiting for me, but my journey starts here, in three cities: Paris. New York. Copenhagen.

International Guy Inc. is owned and operated by Parker Ellis, a ladies’ man with a high IQ and a big libido. He’s the most successful life and love coach in the world, and he’s smart enough to know he can’t run a multimillion-dollar company alone.

He hires two friends whose areas of expertise complement his own. They comprise The Dream Maker, The Love Maker, and The Money Maker. Together, they advise the wealthiest people in the world: Hollywood hotshots, European royalty, and the CEOs of multibillion-dollar companies. And sometimes they can’t help it when things heat up and they end up in bed with their clients. Quite literally.

This International Guy likes his playboy lifestyle, and he’s not looking for commitment. After all, there’s a whole world waiting for him. But as he goes from city to city, and from woman to woman, it’s possible that he just might find his own love along the way…

THE GODS ARE FUNNY.

Except when you piss them off.

Then they suck.

They really, really suck.

(Really).

Alexander Weiss discovers this tidbit when he inadvertently insults Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, and she casts him away on a forgotten isle filled with statues.

Some of them are regenerating psychological needs, such as the need for attention from the environment, the need to free viagra online renew oneself, to remain up-to-date, to discover, and to be tempted or seduced. Earlier there was no proper cure to the levitra buy levitra issue of erection. Being marooned is bad enough, but the fact that the island is also the home of Euryale, elder sister to Medusa, makes the situation a touch worse. The only thing keeping Alex from being petrified is the fact that Euryale has taken a liking to the blundering mortal.

For now.

What follows next is a wild, adventurous tale filled with heroes, gods, monsters, love, and war that is nothing short of legendary.

Whenever Greek gods get involved in anything, the result is typically chaotic and messy. This story is no exception.

The story starts with Alex being squashed (and mostly killed) by a whale (who was originally a Gorgon…it’s a long story). Thus begins an eventful and occasionally confusing tale of love and adventure. In order to save himself (sort of), Alex agrees to find a husband for the sister of the Gorgon who crushed him, Euryale, who’s actually a pretty decent woman, aside from those pesky snakes and eyes that turn a person to stone. In no time at all, Alex is smitten and the feelings are returned by Euryale two-fold.

But they were set up by Athena, and her sister Aphrodite is ticked off. After all, just who is the goddess of love, for crying out loud? And so Alex and Euryale find themselves pawns in a real life game of chess between Ares, Aphrodite and Athena (with a little help from others like Hermes and Hephaestus, amongst others).

I’m a Greek mythology geek. I studied it in school, I’ve loved other fiction works that include it, was thrilled when it became more mainstream via Rick Riordan, so was more than happy to grab this book for review. The author certainly understands how remarkably petty and arrogant Greek gods can be, especially when they tamper in the mortal world. He really humanized some immortals, like Kharon, who is fooled once by Alex and has a bit of a sense of humor about it. Sort of. He knows how to hold a grudge, too.

I did have some issue with how quickly Euryale and Alex fell in love, and have to admit that the story was confusing for awhile because so much was happening and we hopped between Athena and Ares, Alex and various gods and demi-gods, Ares and Aphrodite, etc. I might not have kept reading if I’d not accepted this for review since I was left scratching my head a bit and had to go back and re-read parts to make sure I was understanding the plot.  All of that was necessary to set things up and once it gelled, it was just a fun read. The author has a great sense of humor (the blurb absolutely sold me) and made the story incredibly irreverent and amusing.

The ending wraps up Alex and Euryale’s story, but it does introduce the next story inside the epilogue and I’m glad Jessica will get her own story. She’s the catalyst to much of the conflict in The Gorgon Bride but it really wasn’t her fault, and the author managed to make her a very sympathetic character.

Like humor that just a little sideways? Enjoy Greek myths? Looking for a book that’s just pure entertainment? You should absolutely try The Gorgon Bride. I’m glad I did.

Kat and Vanessa had such a beautiful friendship. They had essentially decided to fulfill the role of a family member for each other since neither of them had been lucky enough to have healthy relationships with their biological relatives. My favorite scenes were the ones that showed how these two women supported each other no matter what was going on in their lives. They obviously cared about each other quite a bit, and it showed.

I had trouble adjusting to all of the flashbacks. There were so many of them that I found it difficult to remember what was currently going on in the characters’ lives once the plot returned to the present day. As interesting as it was to see why Vanessa and Kat turned out the way they did, I would have preferred to spend more time getting to know them as adults instead of seeing what they were like as teenagers.

The plot twists were well done. I appreciated the fact that there were so few clues about what was really going on with these characters. It made the big reveal even more entertaining than it might have otherwise been. Suddenly realizing that I didn’t have everything figured out about this universe also made me want to keep reading to see what else I might be missing.

Recoveries kept me guessing until the end. This is a good choice for anyone who likes to be surprised by what they read.

I’m a sucker for Gracie Guy’s books. I’ve read others and haven’t been let down. This one is no different. I was sucked into the story from page one and couldn’t put it down. The writing flowed well and the characters were intriguing.

Kayleigh has some trust issues and she goes to Ireland to get away from her troubles. Now this isn’t your average girl running from her problems story. She’s not a flighty twenty-something. I liked she and the hero, Rory, were older. It made them more seasoned. Yes, she’s got issues, but she’s relatable. So is Rory. Plus, I could see him. I kind of pictured Colin Farrell as Rory. It made him so much yummier. I understood why he and Kayleigh were drawn to each other.

If you want a book that’s shorter, but long on emotion and heat, then this might be the book for you. Recommended.

Brenna Palmer has everything she wants in life: a dream job as a PA for the CEO at Thornsten Industries, and amazing friends. The only thing still missing is Mr. Right.

Then she stares into the mesmerizing hazel eyes of delicious Gabriel Burke, and she is hopelessly ensnared by his cocky charm. Gabe is a sexual master who knows exactly how to entice her surrender. He’s also a millionaire, a ladies’ man, and a dedicated bachelor.

Brenna resists him—there’s no way she’ll live up to the high-caliber women he pursues and she simply doesn’t have the time to reform him. But Gabe won’t give up so easily. He offers her a compromise: she can continue searching for Mr. Right, but as long as her heart remains unclaimed, she’s his to ravish.

It’s a perfect arrangement, until Mr. Right finally does come along. And when he does, Brenna finds herself in a worse predicament, since Gabe has a hold on her that she just can’t let go of.

She knows what the right thing is to do. It’s just … why the hell does it feel so very wrong?

One night of hot sizzling passion, and they were doomed!

Brenna and Gabe’s relationship started with a misunderstanding and turns into multiple hot nights of passion. Oh, Brenna tries to resist but she does not succeed and they agree to an arrangement.

This full length story starts out with Brenna being not that confident about herself and her beauty. I loved seeing the changes that come to her as well as Gabe. Though he is an absolute master in sex, this was a learning curve for him since relationships have never been something he is good at.

Brenna wants a relationship, marriage, kids and the whole nine yards while Gabe just wants her in his bed.

Brenna is a responsible planner, the one friend in the group who would only drink a glass of wine or no alcohol while the other friends do all the drinking so that she could drive them home. Letting go of control and doing spur of the moment actions is not one of her things.

Gabe, a playboy,  is the opposite. They gel well together. The author did a great job with the characters and the story. It kept me coming back every time. I found the story had a constant up and down vibe. I got that because a couple of times it felt like a lull, almost like the climax was going to come, only when I looked at the number of pages I had yet to read did I realize I was nowhere near the end of the book. Maybe it is me. The story was a little stretched out but it was not enough to stop me from reading.

Finding a Keeper has a great storyline and characters. I love both of these characters, and feel the cover does not do the story justice. Many times book covers are what brings a reader to check them out, even though the story itself should be what grabs them.

Finding a Keeper has off the chart chemistry with characters that would make you believe in taking a chance in love.

Lights flickered. The wind would regularly wheeze its way in enough to play with the candles that kept the hidden lair bright enough for reading, for planning and mainly enough to keep George Fiddick’s men from walking off cliffs and cavernous drops.

George Fiddick or George “Bloody Face” Fiddick as he had come to be known, sat on a chair that was long since stolen from some ship long since raided and sunk. The tomes and books, art and items that filled the room in heaps here and there were also all pieced together from adventures on the seas long ago. No particular details rang clear in Fiddick’s mind. Everything seemed to lump together. And that was life now for the aging man more so than the exactness of details remembered in his younger days.

A mountain of a man, Fiddick filled the whole chair as he leaned back into it. The wood and upholstery of the pirate’s throne groaned under his size. His brown coat and dark pants matched the massive beard that covered his chin. The hair on his face was still smooth and wavy and mostly dark, unlike the thinning and graying hair atop his head. Of all the colors that comprised Fiddick, most focused on the red that regularly gushed from his nose. It darkened on the handkerchief in his bear-claw hand. It was not battle wounds and swords slicked in crimson that had earned him his moniker. “Bloody Face” was pejorative and it stuck. Now Fiddick let it be what it was – a terrifying legend to all who sailed. When captains and crews, privateers or navy saw the Crimson Lady, it was unmistakable. The mighty ship ruled seas and oceans with her black flags each with a red insignia shaped of a Great Deep woman.
