When Gabe created the world’s first sentient program, Pi, he thought things couldn’t get better.

Now he’s pretty sure things couldn’t get worse.

After a colossal error on Gabe’s part, Pi turns into a binary monster along the lines of HAL, GLaDOS, and SHODAN. As she goes on the rampage, the only thing rendering her mostly harmless is the fact that she doesn’t fully understand the physical world…yet.

But she’s learning.

And unless Gabe quickly finds a way to rein her in or shut her down, the next time Pi starts a fire, it won’t just be his empty house that goes up in flames.

If you’re a fan of Douglas Adams, Christopher Moore, or Terry Pratchet, then this is a novel for you.

I am a HUGE fan of the three authors mentioned in the blurb, so how could I not take up the challenge and pick up this book? And, I have to say that I am also now a fan of Galen Surlak-Ramsey and plan to pick up his other books as well.

This was a delightful book! I loved the characters and their geekiness (and the non-geeky characters, especially Gabe’s sister…she made me laugh at her computer ineptness, especially juxtaposed against Gabe). It’s great to watch Pi (the AI) change as she learns more and more. The dialogue was quick, snappy, and natural.

It’s also interesting to see how Gabe himself changed over the course of the book – a definite character growth going on.

Take a chance on this witty, easily read gem… I’m glad I did.

Is she a medium? A psychic? Alexa Bentley only knows one thing for certain; she can talk to ghosts. And sometimes, they take her advice. Missing in Michigan is ideal for fans of the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Mysteries, quirky female characters, and the Paranormal Mystery/Supernatural Suspense genre. This exciting, funny new series will keep you guessing!

Alexa’s unusual ghost therapy skills take her to a remote corner of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. But this case is much trickier than anything else she’s ever encountered. A grieving ghost, several missing teens, and a supernatural creature from Native American folklore stand in her path. Along the way, she manages a bit of romance and lots of witty humor.

Alexa (Alex) Bentley is the type of main character I love. Determination sees her through, even when obstacles get in her way. Her attitude is light hearted, but she takes a serious approach to her business. What is her business? She’s a ghost therapist, and a very good one too. Don’t tell anyone though as people tend to look at her with skepticism when she admits what she does. Her present case means she has to become part detective before her ghost will pass over.

The plot grabbed me and made me want to read on, while the light heartedness made the story even more enjoyable. What helped to keep my interest was I couldn’t work out the solution to the mystery. There were hints but not enough to make me positive I’d solved where all the lost boys were going. Add to this a little bit of romance which was more Alex’s fluttering heart than anything else, and you have a very good book.

This is a book I would be quite happy to read a second time.

When a Christmas shopping expedition brings Tomy Peralta into Jason Winters’s yarn store, both men feel an immediate and intense spark of attraction, but dance instructor Tomy intends to propose to his boyfriend, Sean, at Christmas. Unfortunately for Tomy, marriage isn’t on career-minded Sean’s agenda. Heartbroken, Tomy throws himself into his work until his mother convinces him that learning to knit might help take his mind off his failed romance.

Just when it seems Tomy is ready for a new romance, Sean shows up, wanting Tomy back. Will Tomy give his heart to Sean once more, or will Tomy finally see Sean for who he truly is, and choose the man who helped him knit his heart together again?

Tomy had big plans for Christmas and while shopping in the kitting store for his mother and sister he met Jason. Heartbroken when his boyfriend runs off to be famous in Hollywood, Tomy feels completely at a loss. Gently bullied by his mother, Tomy starts attending the monthly stitching classes at Jason’s shop. Even though progress for Tomy is slow, he and Jason together start to work on his first knitting project, and in the process try to heal his heart.

I really enjoyed this story – finding it both sweet and romantic. I loved that the pace of the story was slow, giving it a slightly older feel. This isn’t a “their eyes connected and they jumped into bed” style of story – so erotic readers looking for something with a ton of spice and sex might not find this suits their tastes. Personally, I enjoyed the gradual progression from acquaintances, to friends, to lovers. The emotional connection and strength of friendship between Tomy and Jason really helped sell this whole story to me and gave it a warmth that I just loved.

While the story does start (and end) around Christmas-time it’s not a strong theme throughout the whole story. The healing and slowly growing relationship between Tomy and Jason – along with their dance lessons and knitting lessons are really what’s central to the story. With a strong supporting cast of characters – predominantly Tomy’s family – this had very much the feel of a small-town romance style of story to me. I loved that the slower pace really let us get to know both Tomy and Jason’s characters and the slow burn between them was a pleasure to watch. When they finally did get together I found it hot and sexy, the chemistry intense and completely believable from all the groundwork that had been laid.

With vibrant and interesting characters, tons of chemistry and a really solid plotline this was a great story and one I really enjoyed. Recommended.

Gabriel Henshaw is nothing but a monster—a ruthless killer—that’s what Lissa Andrini has always been told. Sold to the man by her own father, she fears for her life, yet she can’t help the insane pull she feels to him. It has to be some form of Stockholm syndrome, surely? It couldn’t possibly be the effect of his Dominant nature effortlessly pulling her under his spell and awakening her latent submissive side.

The perfect counterfoil for his darker needs and desires, she has the power to bring him to his knees.

Can love flourish when you’re a pawn in a dangerous game?

If you are a romance lover then Doris O’Connor is a must read author.  This is not my first time reading one of her books and will not be the last.

Gabe’s Revenge is a BDSM Romance that has a Daddy/Daughter play (not real daddy/daughter) going on that may not be for everyone’s taste.

Gabe is a dominant who is bent on getting his revenge from Lissa’s father, however, when her father sells her to Gabe, everything changes. Gabe has a history with Lissa’s father and mother and that has been incorporated into the story really well. Gabe is ruthless but kind and protective to the people who work for him; and those people mean a lot to him.

Lissa is an artist who had a good childhood until her mother died. When her father sells her, she is forced to come face to face with the worst side of humanity.

I do have to mention that the book has some scenes of violence and torture; after all Gabe is not an angel. However, with Gabe by her side, it proves to be an enjoyable read. Their passion and chemistry is off the charts.

It is the second book in the series which I did not know until I completely finished the book. That means it can be read as a stand-alone. The story is well developed and it was difficult and almost impossible to stop reading until I was completely done. It’s a recommended read.

Dedric stormed back to his temporary house where his beta, his parents and the head of the women’s auxiliary waited in grim silence. Mary and Wilhelm, Samson and Rayanne followed him into his office. He sat behind his desk trying to calm the rage burning inside of him before speaking to the group squeezed into the room, all of them wearing the same pissed-off expression. It wouldn’t do to start ripping heads off to find out who was responsible for this insult, but Dedric was so angry he now understood what people meant when they said their blood boiled.

“Answers,” Dedric ordered. “I want answers as to why what should have been a happy and joyous occasion could have turned into chaos and insult. If we weren’t lucky enough to have Laura’s abilities this would have turned out to be a disaster.”

“Son, I can’t think of one person in our pack who would do something like this,” his mother said. “Everyone was overjoyed when they found out you had attracted the attention of an omega,” she assured him as she poured him a cup of coffee from the machine on the sideboard.

“Well somebody did,” Wilhelm groused. “It was plain to see the leg of the table had been cut. It wasn’t a failure due to the weight of the cake and it wasn’t because the table was old, because they’re new. Someone is responsible.” Wilhelm stared out the window. “I think you need to say something to the pack.”

“I will in the morning,” Dedric agreed.

“Oh, I think it’s going to have to be a bit sooner than that,” Samson said as he looked out the window and into the yard in front of the house.

Dedric got up, rounded his desk and looked through the window to find what looked like the whole pack standing in front of his house. Looks like I wasn’t the only one worried about how this affected Laura. “Right. I’ll go speak with them.”

Duchess Jindabyne Madraga, whose memory of the time before she married the Duke has been destroyed by magic, has been captured by her mortal enemies, the forest-dwelling Mori. Their Hooded Queen demands an audience with her.

“Lady, if I wronged you, I humbly beg pardon,” cried Jindabyne. “Please forgive me. I was another person then.”

The Mori woman was at the Queen’s side, dragging on her arm talking to her urgently in Mori, a language that Jindabyne did not know. The queen let herself be pulled away for a moment. Then suddenly she swung back.

“Have you really forgotten me Jindabyne! I find that very hard to believe.”

She ripped the covering off her face.

Jindabyne gasped. Before her stood the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. Utterly, utterly, breathtakingly lovely. How could she have forgotten her!

As she stared in open mouthed amazement, the woman’s eyes widened and the glaring hatred on her face changed to bitter amusement.

“So! Marigoth was right,” she said, her mouth twisting wryly. “Or I am less memorable than I thought I was. Something to hope for.”

“Lady I am sorry,” said Jindabyne. “I always suspected that I did wrong in the past, but I am different now and willing to make amends.”

The savagery of the woman’s glare did not make her any less beautiful. For a moment Jindabyne thought she was going to leap on her again, but then she slumped back onto her seat.

“Take her away!” she said her voice heavy with disgust. “I cannot bear the sight of her.”

“Lady please!” cried Jindabyne, as the guards dragged her away. “If you wish revenge… Do not harm the others. They are innocent of any harm to you. Especially Olga. You are a mother yourself.”

Background of Corkscrew by Peter Stafford-Bow – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Peter Stafford-Bow who is celebrating today’s print release of Corkscrew, a satirical thriller set in the world of wine and big business.

Background of Corkscrew

My novel was born in the heat of a Cape Town summer. No ordinary summer either. It was 2016 and there was a palpable sense that South Africa, the country in which I was living, was spiralling into chaos.

I was struggling with the book. Corkscrew was my first novel and it had started well, a semi-autobiographical gallop through the more exciting aspects of the international wine trade. But three-quarters of the way through, I was stuck. The protagonist had suffered, developed, made a critical decision, but I wasn’t clear how to guide him and his fellow-travellers to a believable conclusion. In search of inspiration, I uncorked another bottle of wine…

Southern Africa was in its second year of drought. The crops had failed, farmers were shooting their starving cattle and the authorities were threatening to ration drinking water. The president had abandoned even the pretence of governing, and was openly looting the country of every dollar he could find. There was a nasty outbreak of political assassinations in Zulu country, adding deadly spice to the cauldron of racial and tribal resentment. And the countryside, baked dry after months of rain-less African sun, was a tinderbox.

Wildfires are nothing new in South Africa. Inhabitants of California, Australia or Spain will recognise them too, they form part of the natural cycle, clearing the dry season’s dead vegetation and making way for the new. But this year was different. The fires raged for weeks, fuelled by the carelessly uncleared, tinder-dry brush and the non-native eucalyptus trees which exploded like pillars filled with tar. The fires leapt roads, tore through vineyards and destroyed farms. Then they reached the outskirts of the city.

I sat at my desk, a spoiled little writer, fretting over how to tie the threads of my plot together into a neat close. The smoke hung over the city like a filthy cloak, turning the sun into a vast, hazy ball, ten times its usual size. Sirens wailed as volunteer firefighters evacuated the wretched from their shacks, fire trucks reduced to mere crowd control, the flames too huge to fight. Ex-US Army helicopters, huge water buckets swinging beneath, clattered out to sea and dipped their pails into the ocean before rising, heading back to the city and emptying their loads over the black, smoking earth.

And then, all at once, I had it! My ending. I pushed the bottles of wine aside and pulled my laptop to me, typing as fast as my fingers could bear, terrified that if I paused I might forget. The great, livid smudge of sun slid down behind Signal Hill, but I didn’t notice the red sky fading to black. It was only hours later, when I reached the end, the only light in my apartment the glow from the screen, that I looked up. The wind had changed. It was colder and carried the scent of moisture. The smell of the ocean. I stretched and crept, aching, to the balcony. The black hillside at the end of my street glittered with the light of a million embers. But rain was coming, I could feel it.

I’ll never forget the relief of finishing that first manuscript – and knowing I’d done the job properly too. It needed re-writing, of course. Three times, in fact! But the summit had been reached. And it did rain that night, the deluge raging in as only a Cape storm can, the kind of weather that has made that tip of Africa the graveyard of a hundred thousand ships and the most feared sea-lane on the planet.

And how about South Africa itself, that imperfect, quarrelsome young democracy? I’m glad to report that the farms recovered and the population pulled together, rich and poor, all rationing their water so no-one ran out. They even kicked out the president, now facing a charge sheet as long as the Limpopo, and forced him to pay back the money he stole. I’m an optimist, so I think the future might be bright. And if you think I’m being naïve, let me draw your attention to another large country you may have heard of. It too stretches between two oceans, has a stunning landscape and a troubled history. Most people didn’t give that one much chance of success either, back in 1776…

Felix Hart, a tragic orphan, is expelled from school, cast on to the British high street and forced to make his way in the cut-throat world of wine retail. Thanks to a positive mental attitude, he is soon forging a promising career, his sensual adventures taking him to the vineyards of Italy, South Africa, Bulgaria and Kent.

His path to the summit, however, is littered with obstacles. Petty office politics, psychotic managers and the British Board of Wine & Liquor prove challenging enough. But when Felix negotiates the world’s biggest Asti Spumante deal, he bites off more than he can chew and is plunged into a vicious world of Mafiosi, people smuggling and ruthless multinationals.

Part thriller, part self-help manual and part drinking companion, Corkscrew is a coruscating critique of neo-liberal capitalism, religious intolerance and the perils of blind tasting.

“And how did an Englishman come to be in possession of this?” boomed a voice behind me.

I wheeled round and there stood Wikus van Blerk. He was tall, close to my height but older, in his late forties I guessed. He was well-built, with tanned, lined skin and a wild mop of curly, grey hair over piercing eyes. But his most striking feature was his huge, bushy beard, streaked with broad stripes of dark grey and white, giving him the appearance of a giant badger. Van Blerk held up the flattened box of Madame Joubert’s Lekker Medisyne Trommel between his thumb and forefinger and waggled it at me.

“Ah, Mr van Blerk! What a pleasure!” I beamed and strode over, arm outstretched.

But instead of taking my hand, van Blerk stretched out his other arm, finger extended, and prodded it into my chin. “I repeat, how did an Englishman come to be in possession of this?” His wild, pale eyes bored into mine and I took a step back, rubbing my chin. His finger remained pointed, menacingly.

“A present from an old Afrikaner friend of mine. Do you know where I can find some more?”

“A present?” he boomed incredulously. “Loot, more like! The proceeds of murder, perhaps. You look like the murdering type.”

You can talk, I thought, inspecting his vast, multi-hued beard. It looked well groomed, however, with no evidence of the fragments of food one sees in the beards of genuine madmen. I wondered if he dyed it.

When August learns the handsome inspector is concealing a personal involvement, and the death of her great-grandfather is somehow connected, she takes the investigation into her own hands. The outcome could be the death of both of them.

August and her mother uncover more than family history on their trip to Austria.

August and her mother, Lacy, had high hopes for their trip to Austria. It was a chance to connect with long lost relatives and take in the beauty and history of the estate. Unfortunately, they don’t receive the warm welcome they were hoping for. August’s great-grandfather is dead and his widow, Eike, and nephew, Fabian, make it clear they see August and Lacy as intruders. In spite of it all, August and Lacy stay in the castle, but are they living with a murderer?

August is a fun character. She is spunky and certainly not afraid to speak her mind. She isn’t ruffled by Eike and Fabian’s chilly attitude. Her enjoyment of history and art leaps off the pages, and it was a joy to watch her explore the castle. August and Tobias have great chemistry from the start. Even though their personalities are very different, I think they make an interesting pair. August is a take action sort of woman, and I admire that about her. However, she does have a tendency to be impulsive and jump to conclusions. Tobias is more of a planner. He likes to gather as much information as he can before he makes a move. I think their skills complement each other nicely, and I enjoyed watching them work together.

The culprit of the crime is revealed well before the book ends. The suspense comes from watching August and Tobias solve the puzzle piece by piece. The tension is further increased as the murderer becomes increasingly bold in their efforts to prevent August from solving the mystery. I was on the edge of my seat wondering how far the villain would go!

I really enjoyed reading A Legacy of Love and Murder. The pacing and suspense are very well done, and Tobias and August make a great couple. While this is book three in the series, it stands alone very well. Fans of romantic suspense would do well to pick up a copy today.

Lake, the main character, had a complicated relationship with her young son. She cared about him quite a bit, but she also had unreasonably rigid expectations of what sort of child he should be. Every time he failed to live up to her expectations, I wondered how she was going to react to that and if she’d learn how to accept him for who he was instead of pushing him to be someone he wasn’t. There were times when it was difficult to see her project her desires onto him so relentlessly, but I was always intrigued by the justifications she came up with for her behavior.

It would have been nice to have a few more details about the setting. For example, it was never quite clear to me how the virtual world that Lake wanted to spend all of her time in made enough money to stay viable. Characters who lived in the real world had to work for a living, so I could only assume there’d need to be some sort of virtual economy as well to pay for things like electricity and upkeep of the highly sophisticated computer programs that people lived in.

One of the other things that Ms. Prell excelled at in this tale was describing how mental illness can affect every facet of someone’s life. Lake’s diagnosis was never entirely clear, but she was obviously struggling with the conflict between the parent she wished she could be and the parent she actually was to her kid. These struggles extended to other parts of this character’s life as well, from her occupation to her relationship with the father of her son.

I’d recommend The Need for Air to anyone who has ever had mixed emotions about someone or something that they loved.

While Karl wasn’t initially looking for commitment, his affection for Teddy grows into love, and he’s ready to make the lifelong promise of being Teddy’s anchor. This sends Teddy fleeing, because he’s determined to avoid becoming the latest victim of empath abuse. Karl wants nothing more than a chance to prove that being a Dom and a responsible anchor aren’t mutually exclusive, but first, Teddy has to stop running.

Karl knew without question that he was looking for a partner who was submissive in the bedroom and while he wasn’t sure he was ready for another long-term boyfriend, Karl was certain he wanted some seriously kinky sex. After receiving a number of replies to his online profile, Karl was curious enough to reciprocate contact with Teddy. After one seriously steamy phone conversation they’re both pretty sure the other is what they want. Can things work out between them?

While this is definitely set in an alternate-style of futuristic world, I wouldn’t consider this a heavy sort of Sci-Fi story. Most things are completely understandable (like there’s no weird slang and messages/texts get sent on your watch etc) and not too hard to comprehend. Personally, I really liked this but I have a feeling readers who are really into their Sci-Fi might not find this a different enough world and perspective to satisfy them. I was also pretty happy that Karl and Teddy start their relationship pretty much immediately and the sex is both smoking hot and very quick off the bat. It’s clear that a deeper emotional connection will be forthcoming and the romance side of their relationship wasn’t left behind – but Karl and Teddy do jump into bed together almost immediately and their kinky sex is definitely hot enough for the explicit rating of the story.

I was intrigued, therefore, that the fact Teddy is an Empath – a person who can pick up and feel the emotions of people in the near vicinity – didn’t even get mentioned until after the first quarter or so of the story. It’s not that I felt there was something wrong with this, I was just a little surprised by how it felt like quite a bit of the story had rolled along before this got raised. This also made me realise that a lot of the book is told from Karl’s perspective and so there was a lot to Teddy and his character that I didn’t know. This led me to a whole host of questions about Teddy and his life.

I was really pleased when Teddy and Karl began talking more personally – particularly about Teddy’s particular brand of empathy – and I honestly found it both really interesting and a good, fresh kind of perspective on the whole situation. The fact it fit perfectly into what Karl was seeking in a sexual partner was slightly too coincidental, but I could happily and easily overlook this for the fact there was so much about the situation that I’d never read about before. There are two previous books in this same world – but this read as very much a stand-alone style of book – there was no mention of the four previous main characters and while it’s set in the same world I strongly feel this story can be picked up and read without anything being read prior by this author.

I think this was a great story full of steamy hot BDSM sex, two very interesting characters and a fresh twist on the whole set-up of their situation. There were enough differences from a more traditional BDSM style book that I found it refreshing and it kept my attention happily all through it. I’d happily recommend this book to readers and am eagerly awaiting the next one which will hopefully come out soon.
