Sorcerers Reborn is Book One in a series that begins here on Earth and takes you on a new and exciting journey in the world of Sorcerers, Dragons, Elves and more.

Midnight stops. She feels something she hasn’t felt in three thousand years, something that possesses magic. It’s to the east in the mountains. She runs toward the beacon. She stands in front of a sheer stone wall hundreds of feet tall. There is a cave three quarters of the way up where the magic resides. If she tries to reach whatever is up there, it could potentially kill her. She’s come this far, but her journey isn’t over yet.

Midnight was exiled to earth with six Sorcerers by the evil Sorcerer Tay’Ron. She is a creature of magic, created by magic. She holds the gift of Sorcery from six Sorcerers who have passed on, and she is on a mission to find people on earth who are worthy of possessing this power. Her legacy must continue. Time is of the essence.

She possesses the gift of Sorcery. Midnight is a creature derived from magic, a fairy creature created from magic. She is not a Sorcerer. The six other Sorcerers are the six she carries inside of herself.

“Midnight is a creature of magic, and she has the ability to absorb the gift from one who is dying. She was able to store each of their gifts separately inside herself. Perhaps that is why she still lives today, thousands of years later.

“…Midnight found the two of you and decided you were worthy of possessing one of these gifts, so she gave you something others can only dream of having. Midnight gave you the gift of sorcery.”

Susan and Samantha looked at Jason, eyes wide, and then looked across the table at Midnight.

“Do you really think we are going to believe this bullshit? Your story is very touching, but you are a writer. This sounds like it belongs in one of your novels. Come Sam, I think it’s time we left.” Susan said.

“You have good reason to doubt what you hear Susan. On this world, sorcery is considered, by most, to be fantasy fiction. I am Midnight and I converse through telepathy. On my world, magic is a common thing. Jason has told my story truthfully, and I understand that it scares you to think that it might be true. Take some time; think about what you’ve heard, discuss it together.”

Both women stood, glared at Jason and Midnight, and turned toward the door.

“I have a question you should think about before leaving. Why did the two of you come here?” Jason asked.

The twins gave him a sour look before walking out the door.

“That went like you expected. What do we do now? Sit here and wait?”

“They will not leave, trust me. You had doubts about sorcery when I first talked to you didn’t you? They are scared as you were. This knowledge is not easy to comprehend, as you know. Give them time to talk about what they heard here.”

Jason didn’t argue with her as he gathered up the remains of their meal, putting everything on the carts. Once he was finished putting leftovers away, he sat down and concentrated on locating the twins.

Jason found Midnight easily; she was in the other room, probably looking out the window. He detected two more spots of magic outside. The twins were sitting in their truck, and hopefully discussing what they had been told.
…………

“Sue, we can’t just leave,” Samantha said. “He is right to ask, why did we come? We walked away from everything to come here looking for answers to questions we needed answered. We came looking for something new, something different. This is beyond our wildest dreams. At least we can, maybe, look around, and give this some more thought.”

“Sam, I’m scared. Sorcery? Who would have thought that this was even possible? Am I wrong to be skeptical?” Samantha didn’t answer.

She needed more information, and they were not going to get it sitting in the truck.

Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.

In what may be the most personal and accomplished legal thriller of John Grisham’s storied career, we deepen our acquaintance with the iconic Southern town of Clanton and the vivid cast of characters that so many readers know and cherish. The result is a richly rewarding novel that is both timely and timeless, full of wit, drama, and—most of all—heart.

Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is John Grisham’s most powerful courtroom drama yet.

I love the books of John Grisham. There have been some misses through the years, but the Jake Brigance series has always been a winner to me. I like the way Grisham writes and this story was no exception. It moved along fine and kept me in my seat needing to know what would happen next.

Jake Brigance is my favorite of Grisham’s legal heroes. He’s strong, but not overly alpha, he’s sweet and has his heart in the right place, even if things don’t always go his way. I root for him in every book.

This story also has Drew, Kira, their mother and the jerk cop they live with. I know it seems like I’m being harsh, calling him a jerk. The cop is doing some rotten things–beating the girlfriend and sexually assaulting Kira. I wouldn’t say he deserved what he got, but he did deserve some discipline. That said, the kids are traumatized by him and when the cop beats the living snot out of their mother, they think she’s dead. If I were Drew, I don’t know how I would’ve handled it, but I might have done the same thing he did. I wish there had been some more concern for the kids and for Drew at first, but this is a book about small town justice and family. Unfortunately, the town wants to think the boy is bad and the cop is good. It made for intriguing reading and for an emotionally charged tale.

If you’re interested in reading about Jake, Drew and how this all sorts out, then pick it up today. I won’t give away spoilers, but it’s worth the journey.

There’s something growing deep in the old Angel Mine – Something the Native Americans warned us about – And now it’s rising again.

Mitch Taylor, ex-Special Forces medic, is seeking a quiet life in the town of Eldon. Tragedy has dogged his life, and he sees the small friendly place as a second chance. But buried deep below the friendly smiles and quaint painted houses is an old abandoned mine that holds a legend of an ancient and terrible god.

In the mine’s labyrinthine depths, something has been growing, something from a time of myth when ancient gods strode the Earth and mankind hadn’t even stood on two legs.

But when the earth shakes and the groundwater rises, it reaches out and those it touches begin to deform and reshape into the image of their god. Their one goal—to feed their ancient master deep below the ground.

Mitch Taylor soon finds himself fighting again, this time for the town, the ones he loves, and for his life.

The Seed of Evil is a horrifying legend of an ancient god that turned out to be real.

After a heavy mortar round literally blew Captain Mitch Taylor’s world apart he struggled to come to grips with civilian life. With almost everyone on his last mission dead – or practically so – he knew he had to keep moving forwards. Trying for a second chance in a small, sleepy country town in Missouri, Mitch comes to love the little place – until an earthquake re-awakens something deep underground and Mitch once more realizes he needs to fight for his new life if any of them are going to have a chance.

I admit I am a huge fan of Grieg Beck’s work – both his Alex Hunter series and his Matt Kearns stories as well as numerous stand-alone books and trilogies. This book lives up to the high expectations I now have of his work in general. Part spooky fable, part military/action thriller, part action adventure this is a crazy and excitingly wild ride that I thoroughly enjoyed. Something about Beck’s writing style just tends to grab me and drag me along, addicted like crack and turning the pages. I now know well enough not to start one of his stories late in the afternoon unless I want to be up until crazy hours of the morning or pull and all-night reading binge. I held off starting this book until a Public holiday when I started it shortly after breakfast and stayed at it until I finished the last page early in the evening. I was in no way disappointed and felt the d ay well used.

I was really pleased that Mitch’s character was realistic and engaging. The opening few scenes were graphic and strongly written to explain the devastation of his life being torn apart with his military action going badly pear shaped, but the scene wasn’t overly gory or written for the blood and deaths to be titillating. The scene also wasn’t dwelled upon, even though those shadows and the weight of it clearly carried through with Mitch. I felt the author struck a really good balance here of realistic writing, and consequences for Mitch’s actions and the grief and weight he carried with him without bogging up the story or being maudlin. I also thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere the book held, part action/adventure but also part spooky fable or horror story. Beck in particular is an exemplary author for this sort of balance and I am rarely left disappointed in his story telling abilities or writing style.

Without giving too much plot away readers will find this story full of small-town secrets, an abandoned and quirky mine, varied and interesting characters and a few really believable and surprising plot twists (the bottled-water angle was amazing and a stroke of genius to my mind). Added together, these are all the necessary ingredients needed for a fantastic story. Throw in some military know-how, a deeply buried history of the towns previous disasters and just a dash of adventure and one word could easily sum up exactly how I found this story. Brilliant. I found the ending to be quite satisfying – but feel readers looking for a traditional or romantic “happy ever after” might not enjoy the ending as much as I did. I found it well resolved, strongly plotted and satisfying, but not a traditional sort of ending.

Readers looking for an intense, action filled and slightly spooky story should definitely check this out – as well as other stories written by this author. I enjoyed every minute of this and am looking forward to a re-read in the very near future.

List of my favorite tropes

Romance is a treasure trove for those of us who love tropes, and I am for sure included in that. It is one of the things that draws me to romance, because I love to see the different ways a trope can be twisted and used. So, here are some of my favorites:

1. One bed: I am a whore for one bed stories. I think it is the way, every time, they believe they can share platonically, that they’re adults and can resist, and yet it never happens that way. Better yet, I will always pretend I am entirely shocked when one of them takes off their pants, as if I had no idea it would head that way.

2. Nightmares: There is nothing better than one character waking up from a nightmare that the other consoles them after

3. Wound tending or sickness: For the same reason as the last one, I love when one has to take care of the other. There is a sense of vulnerability here, a chance for one character to be fragile and the other to be gentle.

4. Enemies to lovers: Talk about fireworks! I love a good bit of angst, and this trope never fails to deliver all the angst and drama.

5. Older Brother’s best friend: I have no idea why this one works so well, but it does. Maybe because it is taboo but not, because there is that fun power imbalance to play with.

6. Soul mates: This one is amazing when done well! I have a kink for reluctant soul mates, so people who swear up and down they don’t want a soul mate, that they are happy alone, that they have no time for love. Even better is when they meet and are opposites, only to discover that the things in each other they don’t like are the things they really need.

7. Forced Proximity: Forcing two people to work shit out by locking them together somehow gives a chance to people who might be perfect to get out of their own way. It gives people who are very different the chance to see the good in each other when they otherwise would have walked away.

8. Second Chance: This works for the hidden romantic in me, the idea that two people can fail, that they can let life get in the way, and then meet up later to work it all out. It feels like everything being put right in the world.

9. Arranged marriage: This follows similar to forced proximity, and works for the same reasons, though it takes it one step farther. My favorites are when neither of them is very happy with the situation. Talk about drama!

10. Age gap: Look, don’t judge me, but I love me a silver fox. I especially love it when the man is iffy about it, when he feels like the girl is too young and worries about whether or not it is good for them to be together. It helps to remove any icky power imbalance issues and makes it less predatory.

There are so many other tropes out there that are amazing, but these are my favorites. Some people find them cliché or boring, but the reality is that there is a reason why so many people connect with them. They tap into a universal feeling we have, and while we can take those tropes and apply them in wildly different ways, we are still given that universal truth, that central feeling that we connect with. Even better, there is no limit to the ways a writer can switch these up and turn them into something that feels fresh and new. So don’t be afraid of tropes, because both readers and writers love them!

Abandoned at three—whose parents want a kid who sees ghosts?—I learned the world is quick to punish misfits. I try my best to be a normal, boring human, but the call of the supernatural just won’t be ignored.

When a stranger shows up on my doorstep in the middle of the night, it’s no sexy tryst. Instead, I’m off to the graveyard, digging up the corpse of a murder victim at the demand of the local vampire coven—and that small felony is just the start.

The spirit of the woman has gone missing, something that shouldn’t be possible, and everyone is looking to me for answers. There’s Kase, a vampire who’s both terrifying and secretive. Grant, a mage with a bad attitude and a lot of power. Troy, the possessive werewolf-detective next door and Hunter, a mysterious bad boy who isn’t even close to human.

It’s a race not just against time but against everything to figure out where the spirits are going, who’s behind it and if I can trust the men who now share my bed.

And all because of a little grave robbing…

I took the stairs carefully, gripping the railing as I went, trying to peer into the darkness of my living room.

Was it Kase? Had he decided he didn’t care for a human telling him what to do or where to go? Or perhaps Troy figured waiting until morning for something between an apology and a lecture was just too far.

Except, I knew it wasn’t them. I could feel it deep in my bones, the way I knew when the sun rose without looking outside, the way I knew when a predator was staring at me.

Whatever was here wasn’t anything as trivial as a vampire or werewolf.

And what sort of screwed up world did I live in where vampires and werewolves were trivial?

When I reached the ground floor, that chill worsened. I struggled to breathe, and the darkness wasn’t run of the mill, as if someone forgot to turn on a light. It was deeper, as though light wasn’t just absent but devoured. Something was there inside it, shifting, staring back at me.

My wrists burned, as if fire licked along the edges of the scars there. It crept up my arms, searing me, and when I would have screamed, someone closed their hand over my mouth.

“Trust me, you don’t want it to hear you.”

“Careful! That box is already spelled! Anything could happen if you mix them up,” I shouted at my triplet Star, who was paying me no mind, just moving things haphazardly around as she ‘dusted’ the shelves of the Tea & Tarot café.

Star twitched her whole body into a pretend robot, her blonde curls bouncing when she dime-stopped her limbs in an abrupt series of motions. It was a lightning change of mood that had become far too common of late. I gave a deep sigh of frustration I didn’t bother to hide. She’d been getting worse by the day, antsy no doubt for The Call. Darn movie people. Telling her she had a role, then delaying production.

“Oh, really.” Okay, she was good at the robot dance, I’d give her that, if a job ever asked for such a dubious ability. But that didn’t stop me from rushing forward to rescue the Promise Bags. They held the precious trinkets of all the females around town who were participating in the upcoming Sadie Hawkins dance. Each midnight blue velvet bag had been magically infused with a specific wish, ranging from a marriage proposal to a spa vacation. Mix up those babies and all Hades will break loose, because this year the items had been blessed under the decade’s most awesome supermoon.

Maybe that’s a bad idea? I chewed on a fingernail while I worried about going too far in my overwhelming urge to have my fellow goddesses receive their fair due from men who did not always appreciate them. Men could be so lame sometimes, not reading the signals right under their very noses, though that did not appear to be the case with our local Mountie, Ace Collins. He could be a little too astute at times. Goddess, give me the strength…

The emotive notes of a musical instrument native to Scotland, one that defied the noise ordinance of Snowy Lake, broke through my worry fog.

Auntie T.J.

I set the rescued box safely aside on a shelf and scurried toward the huge picture window of the Tea & Tarot café to where Tulip sat perched on a stool. The third triplet of our McCall clan, she was a matching bookend to Star, which made them both polar opposites to me with my Elizabeth Taylor-esque violet-colored eyes and dark hair. Or at least according to Granny Toogood, who loved her old movies.

Tulip was keyboarding as per usual on her computer, working either on her ongoing blog posts or selling our newly rolled out ‘potcakes’ to the Canadian masses. I sent a silent prayer to the goddess that the extra revenue the items were supposed to bring in happened. We’d invested in producing cannabutter to add to our spectacular line-up of bakery goods, and to think it might go to waste if the idea didn’t catch on induced serious heart palpitations. And that just isn’t right when a gal’s only twenty-one years old.

“Shoot! What’s Auntie T.J. up to now?”

“She only brings out the big guns when she feels threatened,” Tulip said. “See, Sergei McCausland.” She pointed at the business owner our auntie was serenading with her warmongering.

The town hound dog owned the Bowl-a-ram-a, the five-pin bowling alley tucked away at the outskirts of town, which was located a hop, skip and a jump from our café, Snowy Lake being so small with only twelve hundred and fifty-nine residents, that I could run across it quicker than I could be bothered to start up my Jeep, Thor.

Though that had been changing somewhat of late with the arrival of Constable Collins and his annoying active pursuit of law and order. Sheriff Winn Duffy was more beloved of course, having turned a blind eye for decades, but the new Mountie was gaining ground. Did I share that he’s a handsome devil?

Per usual, I try to act interested about their latest discovery, but all I hear is “blah blah blah new cavern blah blah blah Forbidden Tombs blah blah blah massive bronze pyramids blah blah blah creepy ticking sounds.” It’s a little odd, but I’m not worried.

My bad.

Suddenly, the Forbidden Tombs burst through the ground in my home realm of Purgatory. Bronze pyramids smash through abandoned buildings and highways, making rush hour a nightmare. Even worse, the metal structures attract tiny lightning bolts called igni, which are my very special supernatural buddies. Within minutes, every last igni gets stolen away.

I stand in a small square room. A heavy iron door looms before me. All around, the walls are lined with intricately-entwined gears and springs. Tiny pieces whirl and tick away at high speed. With each click and swipe, a tiny jolt of worry ricochets down my spine. Sweat beads on my palms.

I’m girl enough to admit it. This scene freaks me out.

No question why, either. This isn’t just any metal portal. It’s Pandora’s Door. As in, the girl didn’t keep a box of nasties. Nope. Instead, something awful lurks behind this very entrance. If I pull on the handle, that magical whatchamacallit gets free. Based on what I’ve learned, the mystery something-something could make everything right again. In other words, my igni would return. I’ll move souls once more. The Great Scala is back. How perfect.

Or I could release an unknown scourge that destroys all the after-realms. Definitely not as cool.

A memory appears. I picture Verus giving me a solemn warning: “No matter how tempting the door may appear, you must step back and walk away.”

It’s logical enough advice. Plus, Verus is an oracle angel. In my experience, she’s right most of the time. Perhaps I should give up. Go home. Play with my kid. Smooch my hottie husband. Get a mocha.

That lasts all of five seconds.

Screw it. I’m going in.

I grasp the handle and pull.

But Charlie, who was seen having a heated argument with Gavin the day before, has jumped to the top of the suspect list. Now Charlie and Diesel must check out every clue to refine their search for the real killer among them before the next book Charlie reads comes from a prison library…

A murder and librarians…must be something in the pages…

Join a cat, his master and a lot of people upset with Gavin Fong. I like these Cat in the Stacks mysteries and have read a couple now. It’s like catching up with old friends. The writing is easy and flows along well. Plus, there are kitties.

My favorite character has to be Diesel the Maine Coon. He’s huge and runs around like he’s a dog. He’s got about as much personality as everyone else in the book, which is great. Gavin Fong, the man who doesn’t make it, is equally great, but not because he’s a good guy. The author excelled at making him naughty, which made me want to know who’d bumped him off. I couldn’t wait to find out whodunit.

There are about five different storylines running through this book and series. Charlie is worried about his job, his future and his romance as well as his children, who are older. It’s nice to see the characters again, but at times, it feels a little overly complicated and that there are too many characters to keep track of at times. You can read one of these books and know what’s going on even if you haven’t read the others, which is nice

If you’re looking for a cute mystery, cats in your stories and family life, then this is the book for you.

Nothing General About It by Maurice Benard

Nothing General About It: How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospital by Maurice Benard
Publisher: William Morrow
Genre: Contemporary, Memoir, Non-Fiction
Rating: 5 stars

Maurice Benard has been blessed with family, fame, and a successful career. For twenty-five years, he has played one of the most well-known characters on daytime television: General Hospital’s Michael “Sonny” Corinthos, Jr. In his life outside the screen, he is a loving husband and the father of four. But his path has not been without hardship. When he was only twenty, Maurice was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

In Nothing General About It, Maurice looks back to his youth in a small town and his tenuous relationship with his father. He describes how his bipolar disorder began to surface in childhood, how he struggled to understand the jolting mood swings he experienced, and how a doctor finally saved his life. For years Maurice was relentless in his goal to be a successful actor. But even after he “made it,” he still grappled with terrifying lows, breakdowns, and setbacks, all while trying desperately to maintain his relationship with his wife, who endured his violent, unpredictable episodes. Maurice holds nothing back as he bravely talks about what it was like to be medicated and institutionalized, and of how he learned to manage his manic episodes while on the set of GH.

This naturally peaked the curiosity of many women who wondered whether or not it can cause harm and any woman who is considering a “top to bottom” overhaul for every member or those who are managing chronic illness will likely need to make some adjustments to the spine and extremities, heat and ice therapy, low-level laser therapy, electrotherapy, acupuncture, massage, temporary bracing, and home strengthening exercise therapy. look at this site cialis prescription online Depression prevents you generico levitra on line from being proactive about your condition, doing things you know you should be to overcome anxiety. Nothing General About It is also an incredible love story about an enduring marriage that demonstrates what those vows—for better, for worse, in sickness and in health—truly mean. Maurice also pays tribute to the community that has been there for him through thick and thin, and ruminates on the importance of both inherited and created family.

A shocking, riveting, and utterly candid memoir of love, adversity, and ultimately hope, Nothing General About It offers insights and advice for everyone trying to cope with mental illness, and is a motivational story that offers lessons in perseverance—of the importance of believing in and fighting for yourself through the darkest times.

A man fighting his demons and so much more.

I’ve loved watching General Hospital for ages. I remember the old storylines and the intrigue…plus the hot scenes. I remember well when Maurice Benard showed up on the scene as Sonny Corinthos. I’ll never forget the scene where Sonny and Brenda are on the plane together and the chemistry leapt off the screen. Watching that was part of the reason I picked up this book.

Maurice Benard is a complicated man and it shows on every page. It’s like reading a story by an old friend. It’s easy to follow, plain speaking and written from the heart. I liked how the author peppered in stories from the show. Benard writes well and I couldn’t stop reading. It was heartening to read a story about someone who admits to their demons and how they’re dealing with them. He’s bipolar and needed lithium to control it. He’s blunt about his struggles and how he’s dealing. It gives hope to those who have such issues and shows you can be yourself while being true to yourself.

If you’re a fan of General Hospital, Sonny Corinthos or just want to read a great book about someone with human issues and how they’ve learned to deal, then this might be for you.

Ten Things Most People Don’t Know About Me

To be fair, most people know nothing of me because I’m not exactly famous. However, even those that do know of my existence might be surprised by some of the following:

1. As a kid, I spent a lot of time perched high in tree branches. Sometimes it seemed like they sang.

2. I see dead people. I often hear them as well. It’s not usually as exciting as it sounds.

3. I can paint drums well, but not canvases. Yeah, that doesn’t make any sense to me either, but it’s true.

4. I homeschool my kids. Pre-pandemic it was a great experience. Now, its really tough. Contrary to what most people believe, homeschoolers do not usually sit at home all day.

5. I’ve had jobs picking produce with migrant workers and also participated in brain surgery. My favorite job ever was working at a state park. Trees are the best. (See #1)

6. In college, I saved a man’s life when I walked by his hospital room and noticed he’d stopped breathing. His equipment was giving the nurses’ station a false reading.

7. I enjoy the company of dogs and cats equally. Please don’t tell my cats.

8. As a child, I read adult fiction. As an adult, I mostly read and write middle grade and young adult books. Yes, I do tend to do everything backwards.

9. I’ve had doctors throw up their hands, laugh, and say they have no way to explain the weird stuff my body does.

10. I don’t believe we are alone in the universe.

Humanity’s wake-up call. Answer it or face extinction.

When Bleu’s little sister shows symptoms of the deadly Sickness, a strange vision directs him to leave humanity’s subterranean haven and seek the cure on Earth’s glacial surface. Joining the expedition team, Bleu expects extreme temperatures, not a surface ruled by ingenious predators.

Rana and her fellow star beings have co-existed with Earth’s top carnivores since the humans disappeared. But when her peers transform into Crowned Ones, the final stage of star being development, she fears remaining Uncrowned like her parents. To prove her worth, she undertakes a dangerous mission—contacting the hostile and nearly extinct humans.

But Rana’s plan backfires, and Bleu’s team retaliates. As war with the more advanced star being civilization looms, both Rana and Bleu separately seek a way to save their people.

She knelt, and with trembling hands, she grabbed the extra piece of soaked wood. If she put one log in the back of the cave and kept one in the entrance, then maybe she’d be safe between them until daybreak. Of course, that assumed whatever predator lurked outside lost interest in her by daybreak.

Two fires were her best chance. Her only chance. She quickly placed the second piece of wood, filled its opening with tinder, and grabbed her stones.

The growling grew closer. At this rate, she’d never get the log lit in time. Her mind raced through possibilities, but they all required skills she lacked and ended with her death.

Wait. Furred ones sense energy. In desperation, she expanded her energy to appear larger and hoped her fake size might give the predator pause.

In this enlarged-energy state, she struck the flint and fire stone together. They sparked, but the log remained unlit. Long claws scraped against the floor. She peered up from the flint. The pale light of the first log reflected off two eyes.
