If I’d never heard of me would I read my book?

I would because of the storyline and the reaction from readers.

Storyline: Thirteen-year-old Dirk’s Papa left to fight with the Dutch Resistance. Then Mama died. After the Gestapo abducted his older sister, he learned they’d come for him next.

Reactions to Hunger Winter:

“As my son Jairus read through this book over the last few days, he kept exclaiming how good it was and how excited he was to delve into it each night before bed. Thank you for writing and sharing this gem of a book with us, Dr. Currie! Jairus’s rating for this read is the full five stars!!!!!”

The Corrie ten Boom Foundation operates a WWII museum in the Netherlands. They wrote, “I read this book with great interest. I would love to encourage everyone to read this book. Hunger Winter succeeds in describing a very realistic picture of the situation in the Netherlands.”

Marsha Skrypuch’s WWII books for kids are very popular, including Making Bombs for Hitler. She describes Hunger Winter as “A well-researched novel on a topic that has rarely been explored in books for young people.”

“Exciting from the very start, Hunger Winter is engaging and draws you in so that you don’t want to put it down.”

“I am 11 years old and am in 5th grade. Hunger Winter, by Mr. Rob Currie, is a suspenseful novel keeping the reader on their toes every page-turn! The story takes place in the Netherlands during World War II in the winter of 1944. I highly recommend reading Hunger Winter.”

“I really enjoyed this book because of its unique setting and exciting plot. Though recommended for middle-school aged readers, I think anyone interested in WWII history would enjoy this story. Set in the Netherlands, this book explores a side of WWII history that I had not read much about, so it was fresh and interesting to me. All in all, this was an excellent read that kept me on the edge of my seat! I will definitely be recommending this book to my friends!”

“This novel was a non-stop adventure. Perfect for mid to late grade school. Readers will journey through the hazards of WWII Netherlands, tumbling from one adventure into another, Dirk is able to outrun, out smart, out talk, and outthink his oppressors while protecting his sister. This story will engage young readers and give them perspective on a chapter of history we should never forget.”

“Very informative and an endearing book. I loved the storyline of a teenager’s plight to keep his sister safe during WWII as they were being tracked by the Nazi’s. So many suspenseful moments for these two as they worked to get to the safety of their family. The detailed depiction of what the Dutch went through was eye-opening.”

“My high school son loved it and read it without prompting in just a few days (he couldn’t put it down). This is a great read!”

“I’m a WWII history buff and I really enjoyed this. My son (age 12) said it’s the best historical fiction he has ever read and that’s saying a lot because we read a LOT of historical fiction!”

It’s the Netherlands in late 1944. Thirteen-year-old Dirk’s Papa left to fight with the Resistance. Then Mama died. When the Gestapo snatched his older sister and he learned they were coming for him next, Dirk left home in the middle of the night. He had his pockets stuffed with food, his little sister asleep in his arms, and his heart heavy with a dark secret.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

Dirk Ingelse’s eyes flew open, and he raised his head off the pillow. Who could be knocking on the front door? Gestapo? His insides turned to ice.

The pounding resumed, the sound carrying easily up the stairs into Dirk’s bedroom. It didn’t sound like the rap of knuckles—it was more like the thumping of an angry fist. Or the butt of a rifle.

It had to be the Gestapo. They had been doing more raids lately, and they often came at night. Who else would pummel the front door of the Ingelse’s farmhouse in the middle of the night and risk getting arrested?

Dirk rolled out of bed and crept to his bedroom window. Easing the curtain open a bit, he kept his face away from the window, like Papa had taught him. He couldn’t see a vehicle. But what if they hid their car? Dirk’s right hand shook.

He couldn’t hide. They would tear the place apart to find him. And he couldn’t run—they would have the place surrounded. He’d heard stories. His right hand shook harder. It had been doing that a lot ever since—

The assault on the door resumed, even louder this time. “Open up!” growled a deep voice.

Dirk turned from the window and crept down the stairs.

Soon, the after-storm recovery makes bedfellows of these opposites. Until Megan’s old reflexes kick in—should she brace for betrayal or say yes to Whit once and for all?

She rescues cats and dogs. He needs to be rescued from himself. They shouldn’t work, but they do.

I love a good Catherine Mann book. This one had a cat on the front, so double win. This was truly a double win. I liked the premise, she’s rescuing cats and dogs left stranded by a tornado, and he’s looking for redemption. Once I started this book, I had to finish. I had to know what would happen next. The writing kept up at a great clip and I got a real treat.

Megan’s been burned before and she’s got a daughter to consider. Then there are the critters. She wants them to be taken care of and not abandoned. I liked her determination. Whit took a little time to warm up to, but it was worth the time. He’s a prickly guy, but he’s not too far gone. I liked the chemistry when he and Megan were together. They were a true pair.

A brutal killing takes place on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland: a land of harsh beauty and inhabitants of deep-rooted faith.

A TRAP

As Fin investigates, old skeletons begin to surface, and soon he, the hunter, becomes the hunted.

Detective Inspector Fin Macleod is sent from Edinburgh to investigate the murder of a high school classmate.

This is my new favorite author. His writing style drew me in. He has a wonderful talent for telling a story but also delivering the back story right along with it that helps deliver more about the characters, why the character is taking a certain action or it helped in giving me a more in depth understanding as the back story is so effortlessly tied into the storyline.

The description of the town reveals that the author took time to study the location and learn about the customs of the community. Reading the author’s descriptive words I can picture many of the scenes. This is an excellent novel that I imagine captures the landscape of Isle of Lewis very well.

The book wasn’t wordy nor did it deliver unnecessary fillers. The tempo was perfect. Though Fin was there to investigate a murder, the story goes into depth about his youth and how he ended up where he is now. I can try to explain it but you may not understand until you read the story. This book is more than the suspense of solving a murder like some author’s focus on. If you prefer your crime novels to focus solely on the investigation of solving the case this is not the book for you. There is a secret which is eventually exposed and this leads to the motive for the murder. Once this secret is revealed Fin’s investigations speeds up as he starts to put the pieces together.

The story is dark and gloomy but memorable. At times I forgot about the murder investigation and ended up focused so much on Fin’s life. I didn’t favor any character over another. I felt sorry for them all. The author impressively builds the character with subtle layers and when he’s done they are hard to part with. Fin having very recently lost his 8 year old son and facing the breakdown of his marriage he carried a sadness about him. And as I read about his youth his life seemed to have lacked love and bonding. While reading I didn’t realize this but now as I reflect on the story as a whole I feel sorry for Fin. While reading I felt like the towns people, looking up to Fin and seeing him as one that got out of the town and made something of himself despite his upbringing.

I can’t wait to get started on the next installment of the series. The author’s writing is incredible storytelling that should not be missed.

Emmett owns an occult store. He firmly believes in magic. His boyfriend, Jackson, does not.

Yet none of that matters because they are devoted to each other—until the night Emmett becomes the unexpected target of a sexual demon … an Incubus. My Incubus Boyfriend gives us a quick look into the lives of Emmett and Jackson, a gay couple who despite their different beliefs as it pertains to occult magic have built a rather nice life together.

We see right away that Emmett’s belief in Occult practices is still a point of tension with his long-term partner Jackson, and conversations involving anything to do with magic or spells is completely off the table for the two of them. But this fact does not disrupt their healthy sexual appetite.

Elizabeth Monvey gives the readers no shortage of steamy scenes within this short story, consuming most of the storyline.

The readers get a nice taste of the relationships formed before this novel begins and even gives a slight nod to other interesting characters in the story, but these are mostly small facts that will get us quickly back into a sexy romp session between Emmett, Jackson, and an unintentionally invited Incubus.

I think the story still works well in its short format without needing too much plot substance, but I had wished the heated scenes would have been a little more intense. As a reader if I am not getting a deeper plot with slowly developing character arcs that really help me get excited for the moment when the passion ignites, then I prefer to get down and dirty and that it really GOES there. I would have loved to spend a little more time in the heat of the moment, really getting into the tension with our main characters, but the scenes felt a little too rushed to actually connect to. After all, there is no need to play nice when a demon is involved.

It took almost no time at all to read, but it did draw me in with anticipation of what could paranormally happen. If you are looking for a quick read with an interesting concept, and a mostly sex-based plot, My Incubus Boyfriend could certainly be the story for you!

World building is important in this genre, especially when describing social systems that are quite different from anything we know here on Earth. Luckily, this tale was brimming with explanations of where The Seer came from, how she acquired her powers, and how she knew what to do with them.

The time jumps were confusing to me. Not only did they involve multiple characters that the audience hadn’t met yet, their relationships, if any, to everyone who had currently been introduced were unclear. While many of these questions were eventually answered, it was hard to know what was going on in the first half of it or so until those pieces slowly began coming together. This made it hard to stay focused on the storyline despite the fact that I was pretty excited by the blurb.

One of the most interesting parts of this story had to do with the powers The Seer had. They were described in vivid detail and were so rare that anyone who had them was someone very special, indeed. There were so many layers to these powers, and the advantages they gave to The Seer propelled the storyline forward in all sorts of surprising ways. As much as I want to gush about this in greater detail, it is really is something best discovered by each new reader for themselves.

The Woman Who Walked Among the Stars should be read by anyone who wants to escape into another world for a little while.

He has been exiled from polite society for years. But when Lady Regina makes a plea on her brother’s behalf, Marcus proposes an outrageous deal: her brother can court Louisa so long as Marcus can court Regina. Can the beauty and the beast survive a proper courtship when the devastatingly improper passion between them threatens to cause the scandal of the century?

A marriage they don’t want, but a romance they desperately need.

I know when I pick up a book by Sabrina Jeffries that I’ll be transported to a different world and immersed in it. This book was no different. I loved reading about Regina and Marcus. I enjoyed going into their world for a few hours. The writing was crisp and drew me right in.

Regina wants to be sure her secret never gets out–she can’t read. She also wants to ensure her brother isn’t getting himself into trouble. Marcus wants to protect his sister and to prove he’s not the nasty person everyone believes him to be. How to fix this? Regina and Marcus get together. I liked their chemistry and their ability to dodge what they knew was coming–love. Regina could be a bit of a pain because she’s so determined to hide her secret. But I liked how she grew through the story. It was great to see her come into her own. Same goes for Marcus. He grew a lot, too.

It’s September 1902, and Mary MacDougall has fulfilled her greatest dream—opening her own detective agency. But the achievement doesn’t come without complication.

Mary’s father insists that an older cousin come to work with her—as both secretary and minder. This arrangement, embarrassingly, makes Mary the only detective in the state with a chaperone.

There’s the affair of the nicked napkin rings…the problem of the purloined pocket watch…and the matter of the four filched felines.

Mary and Jeanette have not the slightest notion that one of these modest little matters will blow up into the most consequential and perilous case of the heiress-sleuth’s budding career. What begins in triviality mushrooms into disappearance, betrayal, international intrigue, and murder. As she learns more and more, Mary’s prospects for making the acquaintance of an assassin’s blade improve dramatically.

Witty, fast-paced, and enthralling, A Fatal Fondness—the fourth tale in the series—delves deeply into Mary’s world and paints the portrait of an unconventional young woman ever-ready to defy propriety for the sake of justice.

A quick moving read. An enjoyable story about a young lady with an over-bearing father and a huge desire to be a Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple of some sort. Actually it sounds as if I’m making light and yet this joking and disbelief is something Mary MacDougall goes through with many of the people she deals with. The idea of a woman sleuth in 1902 is beyond comprehension to both men and women.

This is a light, clean, mystery. I had no trouble finishing it in a few hours and while not deep, it always kept my attention. I don’t think this is listed as a YA genre, but I think it can be read by both teens and adults. It’s a feel-good type mystery and we all need to feel good now and then, don’t we?

Richard Audry (a pen name for D. R. Martin) has made his characters each have a unique personality which I think often makes them seem more real. He’s created a well-written and entertaining story.

This is Book 4 in a series titled “ Mary MacDougall Mysteries”. Audry also has another series published. All of his books have good reviews.

Inspired by the discovery that many leading environmentalists now believe we’ve passed the point of no return, Roberta Park set out to write her own account of our fears and responsibilities at this extraordinary point in human history. But instead of taking the usual nonfiction route, she chose to examine our deep moral quandary in an enigmatic three-part novella.

The Disappearing Shore imagines what might happen if the nice environmentalist next door finally snapped and started telling the truth—the real truth about his overwhelming guilt, rage, and fear. From there it gives voice to others who join him in a desperate bid to save their corner of the world, while providing an account of our recklessness for those destined to pick up the pieces.

From the confessions of today’s unlikely heroes—full of candour and dark humour—The Disappearing Shore depicts a much different tomorrow, and the struggle of those determined to continue the human story.

Life on Earth will be very different for our descendants than it was for us.

There’s something fascinating about trying to predict what the world will be like 50 or 100 years from now. This was heavily alluded to in the first portion as people from many different walks of life gave monologues on how our planet has changed and what they think will happen in the coming decades. This part almost felt more like a non-fiction essay than anything in the science fiction genre but that would change rapidly once the story unfolded further.

I was confused by the large number of narrators. It jumped around between them so often that I never got to know more than the absolute basics about any of them. Even then, I had some trouble remembering which details about their occupations and backgrounds belonged to which narrators. They would have made sense in a full-length novel, but including all of them in something of this length made it feel crowded to me.

By far my favorite section was the one that jumped ahead to the future to see which predictions, if any, were true and what life was really like for young folks who were born long after our planet’s ecosystem and environment were permanently altered by pollution and the overuse of fossil fuels. It reminded me of the differences between the accounts of people who actually lived through life-changing historical events like World War II and the recollections about it their descendants chose to keep passing down through the family tree. The specific details of the future generations are best left up to new readers to discover for themselves, but the generation gap aspect of it was extremely well done.

I’d recommend The Disappearing Shore to anyone who is concerned about climate change and what it might mean for the lives of future generations.

An unforgettable novel of a young woman’s surrender to excitement darker than she’d ever imagined…and a love more passionate than she’d ever known.

She’s pulling the wool over someone’s eyes, but it just might be her own!

I’d never read anything by Fern Michaels before I picked up this copy of Vixen in Velvet. I will certainly read more by this author. I enjoyed the author’s style and the characters were interesting, too. I couldn’t put the book down. I have to state right away this book was published in 1976 and does show a bit of it’s age. There is the occasional head hopping, which could be a tad jarring, but not terrible.

Tori wants to be in a marriage of love, not convenience. I get it. She wants to be loved and not by someone who essentially bought her. She’s headstrong and sometimes almost too much for her own good. I liked her willingness to get into trouble and to put in work. Then there’s Scarblade. Honestly, he’s a pill, but he could’ve been worse. I rather liked him. The attraction happened rather fast, but it’s romance and I liked it.

If you want a book that’s original, then this is the one for you.
