Dover Billings has sold his handcrafted wares at the Dickens Fair in San Francisco for over twenty years. He’s not as outgoing as the other artisans at this yearly Victorian celebration and prefers to observe the festivities from the shadows. That is until a new corset maker moves into the booth next door and unsettles his carefully constructed life. Landry Malcolm is handsome, well dressed, and the life of the party… one Dover wants no part of. Too bad he’s attracted to his confident younger rival.

Miscommunications plague any attempts to find common ground, though, leaving Landry wondering what—if anything—he can do to make things right. Will a custom-made peace offering open the door to friendship, cooperation… and maybe more?

Dover loved selling his wares at the Dickens Fair and had done so for many years, but when tailor and corset-maker Landry turns up with a ton of bawdy and over-the-top friends and patrons Dover can’t help but shy away from the exuberance of the handsome man. A few bumps in their initial meetings had both Dover and Landry unsure if they could be friends, let alone anything more like they each secretly hope for. Can the magic of Christmas help them both?

I enjoyed this short story and found myself pleased that Dover and Landry didn’t just immediately fall into insta-lust with each other. While the attraction was definitely simmering there under the surface Landry’s exuberance and Dover’s shyness and blunt, non-sugar-coating style of mannerism meant it took the two men a while to find an easy rhythm between them. I really enjoyed how this added conflict into the book without the usual mis-understandings or plot devices.

It took me a while to really believe in the potential for a lasting relationship between Dover and Landry. Despite the fact they’re both clearly attracted to each other their personalities are quite different and Dover seems to have deep and genuine reasons for not wanting to get too involved with someone as outgoing and over-the-top as Landry is. This kept me unsure of how the potential relationship between Dover and Landry could work both long-term and how well they were suited to each other since in many important respects they were very different people requiring different things from each other.

I was pleased, therefore, once the ice really broke between the men that even with their different needs and outlooks they could find plenty of common ground together and explore the potential of what could flourish between them both. With only a few chaste kisses between the men there isn’t an intensely erotic level of heat in this story but I found the will-they-won’t-they chemistry and tension more than made up for this.

Different and interesting, I really enjoyed this short story and was pleased to find it a lovely and heart-warming story of two men trusting and coming together to build something strong together.

She is really different from all the other old ladies (wife/official partner) in everything, but she is strong even though she has had a sheltered life from the public if you don’t count the sexual/wifely training. I loved the dynamic of their relationship. The changes that came up on him when he met her were interesting. This story is different, yes, and it had a bit of an insta-love story quality which I didn’t mind one bit. There are scenes that may disturb some, though. The sizzling chemistry was loaded with action. There was some light BDSM–tying up–during the scenes.

This story is perfect for readers who want a self-healing story with action and romance.

I have never climbed a tree in my life.

But I suppose there’s a first time for everything.

It’s a gaspingly cold mid-January morning with an ice-blue sky overhead – not exactly the ideal conditions in which to be lurking on the pavement outside a stranger’s house, nervously eyeing up the oak tree in their garden.

Camera gripped in my freezing hands, I stamp my feet and blow out misty breath as I psyche myself up to be bold. I’ve driven sixty miles from Newtown, where I live, to the pretty, chocolate-box village of Sunnybrook in Surrey – with the ultimate goal of climbing this very tree and taking photos of the view from up there.

The tree is almost exactly how I pictured it in my imagination – old and gnarled with broad, evenly-spaced branches. My eye homes in on one branch in particular. It reaches out to the left, a little over six feet from the ground; the perfect place to sit and gaze out over the village green and the duck pond. (As I knew it would be.)

Tears fill my eyes. But I’m smiling, too.

It’s all in a good cause.

Stop dithering and just do it!

When I push it open, the garden gate swings inwards without creaking and the windows remain blank. I drop my bag by the gate and head for the tree.

It’s amazing how fear can give you almost super-human powers. Under normal circumstances, I’d need someone to give me a bunk-up into this tree. But today, with adrenalin pumping through my system, I manage to swing myself up there with no problems at all . . .

About the Author:

Rosie has been scribbling stories ever since she was little.

Back then, they were rip-roaring adventure tales with a young heroine in perilous danger of falling off a cliff or being tied up by ‘the baddies’.

Thankfully, Rosie has moved on somewhat, and now much prefers to write romantic comedies that melt your heart and make you smile, with really not much perilous danger at all – unless you count the heroine losing her heart in love.

Spring at the Little Duck Pond Café is the first in Rosie’s brand new series of novellas centred around life in a village café. Each novella is a ‘stand-alone’ read.

The devastatingly hot jock Austin Jacobs is just the man for the job. As the reigning campus sex god, he has the playboy act down pat. But underneath those six-pack abs beats a broken heart. He doesn’t trust people and he sure as hell doesn’t believe in love.

The odd couple strike a deal. Four weeks of ‘tutoring’ for five thousand dollars.

When Austin coaxes Elizabeth out from behind her computer screen, the attraction they feel is undeniable. They’re both a little broken, but somehow their jagged edges fit. And when their world comes tumbling down on top of them, they each have to decide if this weird thing called love is worth fighting for.

This trope is one that has seen a fair few stories – a shy, nerdy girl with an outgoing, athletic boy. Add into this the opposite wealth status and I thought it would be a fairly standard, run-of-the-mill story. I was so wrong!!! Elizabeth is a character that will charm you with her social ineptness. Austin will make you smile as you see past his defences and understand why he acts that way. And you will cheer for Elizabeth when she is strong enough to go for what she wants, rather than what she should accept.

I found this to be extremely well-written and was taken into the story from the very beginning. There are characters here to love, and those to dislike. One thing I loved about this story is what you see isn’t always what you get. Jessie is a brilliant character who added to the story, instead of being a one-dimensional Barbie!

I do love a good epilogue, and this one punches well above its weight! Superb, to put it simply. The story brought tears to my eyes, the epilogue set them free. A brilliant book, first in the series, and highly recommended by me. Can’t wait for the next!

Brent’s an ace at coding, but when it comes to handcrafts, he’s definitely at the far left end of the bell curve. Luckily he encounters seriously cute theater costumer Jonathan at the Goodwill Outlet. Jonathan offers Brent both an acceptably ugly sweater and his expertise in swants conversion. Attraction sparks on Brent’s side, but can Jonathan be interested in a guy like him?

After a nasty break up, Brent was thrilled to quickly be hired by HubPilot, the trendy, hip and oh-so-cool new graphics company that had exploded through every forecast possible. While nearly a decade older than most of his co-workers, Brent is exceptional at his job and quickly proves his chops from a work-perspective. The only problem is, Brent hates to stand out and usually avoids the more social aspect to work, and only now with the Ugly Sweater turned Swants Christmas party coming up is it dawning on Brent that if he’s going to make his career work, he’s going to have to at least partially get on board with the corporate attitude to having fun.

I actually really enjoyed this story. I was pleased that the term Swants (a sweater turned into pants) was explained early on, and at times I felt rather like Brent, battered from every angle with the new, hip and up-and-coming antics of a younger generation. I felt deep empathy at Brent, who simply wanted to enjoy a fairly relaxed and quiet social lead up to the holidays and meet his work milestones. I have to admit though, when Brent put his mind to the task of trying to mesh better with his co-workers he did an amazing job.

Brent met Jonathan over a charity bin in the desperate search for his ugly sweater and from the moment the two men started verbally tussling I loved every second of their interaction. At times I wondered if they were a little too sharp with each other, but just as I got to that edge of wondering, things would smooth out and so I found much of their interactions delightfully witty and interesting. This is not a placid or easy relationship that the two men embark upon and I have to say I adored every moment. The snark and off-beat sense of humour had me (very literally) snorting with laughter in a few places – the scene at Brent’s apartment when he and Jonathon go through the final three possibilities for the eventual Ugly Swants was something that will live on in my memory for ages to come. The author gets major, major kudos for their creative thinking with the three eventual options. They are hilarious.

With some steamy kisses but nothing else more intimate this might not reach the heat-level that most erotic readers are used to, but I personally found it a delightful, funny and interestingly modern short story. A great read and definitely a story I will enjoy again in the future. Recommended.

Steven is devastated after his mother’s death, but he and his brother decide the right thing to do is donate all her stuff to the small, local theatre company. Steve knows his high school boyfriend, Troy might very well be there since the theatre is owned by Troy’s twin sister, but when the two men meet up again after such a long time apart neither of them are ready for the flood of emotions and rekindled feelings that come back.

This is a lovely and somewhat sweet reunion style of short story. I enjoyed how while it was set around Christmas-time the plot mainly revolved around Steve and Troy rediscovering each other. Steve is a carpenter – and Troy’s theatre is in dire need of an upgrade and there are plenty of sets for the Christmas play that need the touch of a professional. This throws the two old friends into each other’s company a lot and it’s no small wonder that they reconnect.

While it’s clear Troy and Steve’s relationship finishes in a good and positive place I couldn’t help but feel there was a lot of potential for a longer story to continue where this left off as there were a few aspects of both Steve and his brother’s grief over their mother – and the main characters’ plans for the future – that I would have enjoyed seeing come to more fruition.

Happy and sweet, this is a lovely story about revisiting the past, dealing with the present and looking forward into the future. I enjoyed also that it wasn’t overly Christmassy – but a good, modern contemporary romance.

Billy was nearly an hour late when he finally rushed down Fulham Road and into the entrance of the Royal Marsden hospital where he ran into a black haired, brown-eyed vision of masculinity. Literally ran into. Publicly crashed into a stunning man wearing a white fitted t-shirt, a linen suit, tan loafers, and stood tall like a catwalk model. Too late Billy skidded to a halt, and into the arms of the handsome stranger.

“I’m so sorry,” Billy blurted out.

The vision of masculinity reached forward and grabbed his shoulders to stop him from falling.

“No problem.” The man looked directly at Billy and held on to his shoulders for a moment or so longer than was probably necessary.

Billy wanted to crawl away and hide in a corner. He had never considered himself a cool guy. The roles he played in soap operas as a sensitive-looking young man with an apologetic, hesitant manner were in truth no more than an extension of his own personality. He was uncomfortable in large social gatherings, and preferred his own company.

But this man with wavy black hair, deep brown eyes, and strong arms was someone he would dearly like to spend more time with. Billy struggled to find a witty phrase, a bright piece of banter to rescue the moment.

“Sure.”

Sure? Billy shook his head at the crassness of his response. The man smiled, dropped his arms, and strode off.

Shit.

Five Weird and Wonderful Things to See in Oregon and Washington by Kim Fielding – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Kim Fielding who is celebrating yesterday’s release of Love Has No Direction.

*****

Hi! Kim Fielding here to celebrate the release of Love Has No Direction, my 26th novel!

Most of the action in this book takes place in Oregon, with some scenes in Washington State. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest; it’s still a favorite place to visit. And it’s also delightfully quirky. Here are my personal Top Five Weird and Wonderful Things to See in Oregon and Washington.

5. Oregon Vortex. This attraction is in southern Oregon, not far from where one of the characters in my book lives. If you’re traveling on I-5, you can make a stop. Over a hundred years ago, a small building slid partway down a hill, and the resulting angles make for some fun optical illusions. Objects seem to roll uphill, people’s heights change. Kids love it, and I do too.

4. Enchanted Forest. This little theme park near Salem, Oregon, was one of my childhood favorites and, years later, my kids enjoyed it too. It was created by—and is still run by—one family, and it has cute little rides, various storybook scenes, and a theatre where they do short plays. When I was young I especially liked the haunted house, but my girls favored the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe slide. The entire park is adorable and low-key.

3. Ye Olde Curiosity Shop. This Seattle curio shop was first opened in 1899 and has moved around a few times since. Today it perches on the waterfront. You can buy ordinary souvenirs there, but the real attractions are the exhibits: shrunken heads, artifacts from around the globe, weird things in jars, and two mummified human bodies. My husband calls this place Ye Olde Tourist Trap, but I figure a tourist trap that’s been around for 120 years deserves some respect. And it’s free.

2. Shaniko. This town in central Oregon was once the wool capital of the world, serving as a shipping center for cattle, sheep, and wheat. But in the early 1900s the railroad lines shifted, and Shaniko went bust. Today it’s a ghost town where about three dozen people live. I adore ghost towns.

1. Maryhill Museum. Back in the early 1900s, railroad magnate Sam Hill had a lot of ideas, some of them more feasible than others. He built a life-sized replica of Stonehenge in south-central Washington as a memorial to the dead of World War I. He also built a mansion, Maryhill, which he named after his wife. But the mansion wasn’t completed in his lifetime, and instead it became a museum. Hill had a wide circle of interesting friends, which means the museum houses works by Rodin, objects that once belonged to Loie Fuller (of the Folies Bergère), and a bunch of stuff donated by Romanian royalty. Not what you’d expect in this fairly isolated location, and it’s all very cool. There are also lovely views of the Columbia River Gorge.

Do you have a favorite quirky attraction?

When he attempts to make amends, he encounters Parker, a beautiful and colorful young man, and he agrees to Parker’s impulsive request to join him.
