Brutal injuries can leave scars.

As the teenage survivor of a savage dog’s rampage, it’s a lesson Bryce Gallo will never forget.

Struggling to cope with his damaged appearance, along with a newfound fear of dogs and mounting anxieties at home and school, he flees his suburban home into the moonlit streets of St. Charles.

Along the roads of suburbia and through the shadowed heart of the city, he encounters Wheels, a maintenance worker for a series of apartment buildings; Paloma, known to some by the moniker of Lady Luck; and a woman in a dark house who is, as far as Bryce can fathom, like no one else he has met before.

His new life is not without obstacles or enemies, he learns. The future is a battlefield. Fire and smoke loom on the horizon, and his dangerous course may see the lives of his family and friends forever changed.

Some days are impossible to forget.

Bryce’s character development was incredibly well done. He’d been through a terrible experience that caused both emotional and physical trauma. His recovery was a slow and difficult one, especially when it came to how he responded to his memories of that awful day and the reactions of other people to his many scars. I had so much compassion for this character even when he was acting out. Many teens would behave the same way in his shoes, especially if they lived in the early 1980s when fewer people understood how trauma works and when medical treatments for this sort of injury weren’t as advanced as they would be today.

The mystery subplot could have used more development. I had some trouble following its developments, especially in the beginning when Bryce knew nothing about what was going on. There simply weren’t enough hints to show what was happening or why it was happening. A few more of them would have been very helpful.

One of the most interesting parts of this book for me was Bryce’s troubled relationship with his mom and stepdad. Their conflicts were incredibly complex and rooted in disagreements that had been going on for a very long time. Not only was this where the main character found a lot of opportunities for personal growth, it was also where some of the best plot developments came from. While I was satisfied with the ending, I sure would like to see a sequel that explores what their relationships were like hen Bryce was a few decades older. There was so much more room here for future storylines.

I’d recommend Anybody Want to Play War? to anyone who is interested in the 1980s or realistic depictions of mental illness after a traumatic event.

While deployed on a covert mercenary assignment, Johnny doesn’t have much in the way of holiday cheer. But the mysterious notes from Dex that somehow appear in his bunk—reminding him of the gifts, cookies, celebrations, and most of all, love, waiting for him back in Wisconsin—help him get through the long, hot days. Will they be enough to keep his spirits up when the rest of his unit goes home to their families and he’s left alone?

Johnny is deployed and he has no idea how Dex manages to send him notes, but these physical reminders of all he has waiting for him back at home help ease the pain of not being there for himself.

I absolutely loved this book and it has all the warmth and emotional feels that you could hope for. I have to give major kudos to the author – almost the entirety of this short story is told while Johnny is deployed, we only really hear from Dex through his letters and despite that disconnect I could really feel Dex’s presence throughout the whole story.

I found this really well written and I adored how deeply emotional it was. Johnny and Dex’s love – despite their having been together only a few months – really sang through each page and at no point did I feel like the story was one sided or uneven. While the ending was fairly predictable it left me with a warm smile and a really good warm-and-fuzzy feeling, which is what I personally want from any Christmas story.

Warm and lovely, this is a great quick read.

But life hadn’t prepared me for a biker who would lure me in, kidnap me, and abuse me for five years. I got Fawn out of it, my precious girl, and a lot of bad memories. Being tossed into a dumpster and left to die wasn’t at the top of my list, but Renegade found me. I’ve never had a man be kind to me or my daughter before — especially not a biker — and I’m not sure what to think. I want to trust him, but I don’t want to give him my heart only to have him turn out like every other man I’ve ever known. It would break me.

I trust them, and in my own way I love them, but it’s not the same as having a wife and kids. I’ll never go down that path. Then I found Fawn and her mother, Darby, thrown away like unwanted trash. Yeah, Fate’s laughing her ass off right now. They’re in my home, and slowly worming their way under my skin. Hearing their story is enough to make my blood boil and send rage flooding through me. I’ll exact revenge for all they’ve suffered, and then they’ll truly be free, able to move on without fear of being taken again. Except… I might not want to let them go.

Renegade, a member of the Devil’s Boneyard Motorcycle Club, was at the liquor store stacking up on booze when he heard a noise and decided to take a look in case someone was going to rob the store. Instead he finds a filthy young girl who wouldn’t talk but showed him to a dumpster. What he finds shocks him. A young woman, beaten, cut, and unconscious was left in the dumpster to die.

The young woman, Darby, had been kidnapped at the age of 15, raped and became pregnant soon after. Boomer, the leader of the Mayhem Riders Nomads, the man who kidnapped her used the two of them against each other to keep them in line. After being rescued by Renegade, she is confused whether or not to trust him with her and her daughter’s safety.

I enjoyed the plot and as soon as I started reading, I couldn’t stop. It is a sobering reminder of what can happen when someone makes a mistake that can change your life forever. We also get to see the resilience of the young and the protectiveness of a mother’s love. Then there is the fact that, although Renegade couldn’t see himself with a family, after a few hours he can’t imagine his life without them.

The characters were complex with their own issues and hopes. I enjoyed seeing Renegade opening his house and heart to the abused women. One of the cutest moments is watching Fawn, the young girl, run into his arms calling him daddy. Fawn’s trust was easy for him to earn as he was the one who rescued her mom but it was heartbreaking seeing her flinch away from everyone else.

Darby remembered Renegade and his sister, as she had gone to high school with his sister Nikki. She had a crush on him, but knew he was too old for her at the time. She was also impressed at how her daughter was treated, with care and love. Another funny moment was watching Renegade buy them both clothing and other items they would need, completely out of his element as he had no idea what they needed.

This is a book full of harsh truths, hope, and a love that overcomes tragedy. It shows that a family can be made from the worst circumstances and that the past isn’t going to hold back those who want to have a new future.

When the woman stopped the stroller next to the bus-stop bench and took a seat next to Kavenski, Cara knew something was up. For one, she would eat her phone if that woman would ever set foot on a public bus. Also, Kavenski, for all his hotness, was a big and intimidating guy. No one would casually plop themselves down next to a dangerous-looking stranger, especially with her baby right there.

With both Kavenski and the woman facing forward, it was impossible for Cara to see if they were talking. She was tempted to move closer to the pair to see if she could eavesdrop, but Kavenski had known she’d been following him earlier, and that made her hesitate. It was one thing for her to follow as he skulked around town, but this meeting seemed very shady and purposeful. He’d let her go once, but who knew what he’d do if she had incriminating information on him.

The woman turned her head toward Kavenski for just a few seconds, and Cara hurried to take a few pictures. With the oversize sunglasses, hat, and scarf, it was hard to get an idea of what the woman actually looked like, especially from a distance. The only things Cara was sure of were that she was white, tall, and fashion-conscious.

To Cara’s frustration, she saw that the woman’s lips were indeed moving. Once again resisting the urge to get close enough to listen to their conversation, Cara watched as the woman reached into the stroller and appeared to adjust the baby’s blanket. When she withdrew her hand, however, she was holding something white and rectangular.

Almost bursting with curiosity, even as her heart pounded from fear of discovery, Cara found herself leaning forward, straining to see what the woman had taken from the stroller. In just the split second it took her to pass the item to Kavenski, Cara was pretty sure it was a legal-sized envelope. Before she could see any other details or even take a few steps closer, he slipped the item into his jacket pocket.

The woman stood and pushed the stroller past Kavenski, and Cara realized that she would be passing right by. After a frozen second, she forced her gaze to her phone screen. Her hair fell in heavy curtains on either side of her face, hiding her profile from the woman’s view, and Cara was intensely grateful that she hadn’t pulled it back that morning.

The seconds seemed to tick by agonizingly slowly as the burr of stroller wheels and the sharp click of the woman’s bootheels drew closer. Cara didn’t breathe as the woman passed just five feet away, and her pounding heart was so loud it made it hard to hear if the footsteps were slowing.

When she couldn’t hold her breath any longer, she dared a pseudo-casual glance and saw the back of the woman a half block away. Sucking in a much-needed breath, Cara returned her attention to Kavenski, just in time to see him rocket off the bench right into rush-hour traffic. The movement was so sudden and unexpected that Cara jerked back a step, startled.

“What is he doing?” Without considering the wisdom of what she was doing, Cara bolted toward him, her eyes locked on his big, surprisingly nimble form as he played a terrifying game of Frogger with oncoming cars. Brakes squealed and drivers laid on their horns as Kavenski shot across the road to the far lane. Turning to face the SUV heading toward him, he raised both hands, palms out, like a traffic cop.

He faced down the oncoming vehicle barreling toward him. The tires squealed as the wheels locked, and Cara instinctively reached toward him as if she could somehow snatch him to safety. His huge frame actually looked small as the five-thousand-pound vehicle bore down on him.

Cara reached the curb, a useless shout of warning building in her chest. Kavenski stared down the SUV, not even flinching as it rocketed closer. Just inches from Kavenski, the vehicle lurched to a halt, rocking back from the force of the stop. Cara’s breath escaped her in a rush. She stopped abruptly, realizing that she had been about to run right out into traffic. She’d been so focused on Kavenski’s near death that she hadn’t even thought about her own safety.

As the driver of the SUV rolled his window down and screamed invectives, Kavenski turned and strode over to a small dog huddled in the center of the lane. Scooping up the tiny furball, Kavenski stepped out of the street, waving casually at the still-yelling driver to continue on his way.

Cara gave a small gasping laugh at Kavenski’s nonchalance. He was acting as if risking his life to save a tiny dog was no big deal, while Cara’s heart was still trying to pound out of her chest and her hands shook with an overdose of adrenaline. As if he’d heard her slightly panicked laughter, Kavenski met her gaze across the four lanes of traffic. They stared at each other for an eternal moment before the corner of his mouth kicked up in more of a grimace than a smile.

“Take me hostage,” Jaime whispered.

Lai frowned and kept her eyes on the officers in the room. They all had their guns pulled but were unsure if they were to advance.

“Take me hostage, now!” he whispered with more urgency.

In a rush Lai understood his intent. She spun and flung an arm around her friend’s neck. She shoved her gun into the side of his head and faced the room. She allowed her fury to show on her face.

“I am taking my cousin and I am leaving!” she shouted. “If we are not allowed to leave, I am going to shoot Jaime in the head.”

“Please, don’t hurt me,” Jaime pleaded.

Lai could have kissed him for his cleverness. “Shut up.” She pushed the gun harder into his head and hoped he would forgive her for the bruise he would have the next day.

“You don’t have any bullets left,” Kieran called from the other side of the room. The other students nodded their agreement. This caused the four officers standing guard to all come forward. Lai took her gun from Jaime’s head for the moment and aimed it at the ceiling. She fired once and quickly returned it to her friend’s head. Everyone flinched at the shot.

“I have plenty of bullets left, and I will use them all to get out of here,” Lai warned. She fixed her glare on the sergeant, who sat on the ground in a small pool of her own blood. She pressed her hands firmly against the wound as she met Lai’s death stare.

“Tell an officer to unchain her,” Lai ordered.

The sergeant did nothing.

“Do it now or I’ll shoot both of you!” Lai screamed.

After a long moment, the sergeant nodded to an officer. “Give her what she wants.”

The officer in question frowned in confusion. “Sergeant Washington, are you sure—”

She cut him off. “That’s an order, officer.”

The officer nodded once and found the keys on his belt. He stopped next to Mel and undid her ankle shackles, followed by her handcuffs. She pulled the gag out of her mouth and walked quickly over to Lai. She was shaking wildly, and she was still crying.

“The three of us are going to walk out that door,” Lai said quietly. She nodded to the door in the corner of the room that led outside. “If anyone tries to stop us, I will shoot the sergeant again, and this time I will shoot to kill.”

No one moved. The four officers had their guns lowered. The sergeant met Lai’s eyes with a cold glare of her own.
“You don’t want to do this, Lailani,” she said coolly.

“It’s too late for that now,” Lai hissed through clenched teeth. Without saying anything further, she began carefully walking herself and Jaime toward the door. Mel followed them with a hand on Lai’s shoulder. A distant part of Lai’s mind told her to stop this, to lower the gun and apologize and accept her punishment. The adrenaline pushed those thoughts aside and left her with only her objective.

She had to keep her cousin alive.

Self-publishing v. Traditional publishing

When I decided to write my first book I would research on the topics of the book as well as the type of publishing I wanted. During a lot of my research I found that a lot of authors didn’t like authors who self-publish. They thought it was taboo and if you want to do well then you to get an agent, editor and publishing deal.

I didn’t understand what was so bad about self-publishing. It seemed similar to me. I didn’t put much thought into it. I started getting a list of agents that I thought might like my manuscript and started sending them out electronically. After a few months of either not hearing back, being rejected and one that asked me to send more I decided to really look into self-publishing.

The more I researched it the more it seemed to be the perfect fit for me. Sure traditionally published authors turned their noses down on it, but everyone is different. As I continued to research I realized it is the same thing except I pay for everything up front like editing, a cover designer, and I am in charge of all of the marketing.

With traditional publishing you have a lot less control and a big chunk is taken out to pay for the services your agent and publisher get for you. You may end up with next to nothing unless you become a best-selling author with millions sold.

I am not dissing the traditional route, but for the type of person I am I like the idea of having more control over everything. Amazon makes it easy to self-publish and I get a high percent of each book sold.

I think they are both equally great with each having pros and cons. I think it should be up to each person what works best for them.

Ella noticed that Daniel was starting to get fidgety and had a nervous energy. She held his hand and smiled at him. He kissed her hand and held them tight. “Ella, you have always been my best friend and for the past six years, I have been lucky enough to call you the love of my life. We may fight at times, but I know that I could never be without you by my side. Words could never describe how much you mean to me. You are the reason I wake up in the morning and the reason I never want to go to sleep at night. When I think about my future, the only thing that I know for sure is how much I need you in it. You are my everything.” He grabbed a box out of his pocket and got down on one knee. He looked her right in the eyes and said, “Will you do the honor of making me the happiest guy in the world and be my wife?” Ella was shocked. She shouldn’t have been surprised, as this had been a long time coming. But still, she didn’t think it would happen now when her life had just fallen apart. Tears formed in Ella’s eyes. “I…uh…I need a minute.” Ella said before slipping her heels off and taking off down the beach.

This hysterical coming-of-age tale is jam-packed with enough nostalgia to satisfy anyone who grew up in the ‘80s or at least had the good fortune to travel through them.

This was just fun. That’s the first word that comes to mind. Although it is set in the 80’s, I don’t think there is a person of any age who couldn’t identify with various happenings or maybe I should say shenanigans. The actual format of an event of the 80’s might have been a little different but the same problems, even the same complaints still exist.

Steven Manchester wrote a memory story for some of us and a good fiction story for those of a different age. A belly-laugh type story full of fun and hard times too. Somehow people made them fun then, managed with what they had, while others before them thought they were spoiled.

Mr. Manchester’s “boys” or the three brothers in his story are a great depiction of how siblings interacted in pretty well every era.

A good read that evokes a lot of memories and a really good picture of the 80’s which is an era I don’t see as much literature on.

The narrator in this book had a wonderful sense of humor. One of the coolest things about it was that they appeared to be aware of the genre they were working with and made many sly references to what an audience expects from a mystery. I giggled my way through these references as I waited to find out what would happen to the characters next.

There were times when I found it tricky to follow the plot because of how many times it slowed down to explain something that was loosely related to what the characters were currently experiencing. While these asides were often pretty funny as I mentioned above, there were so many of them that it was hard to stay focused on the main point of the storyline.

One of the things the narrator did a very good job of was subverting the audience’s expectations. There are certain tropes in the mystery genre that most people who are familiar with it will expect to see. It was amusing to take note of the narrator’s creative twists on these tropes, especially when it came to the audience’s expectations of what a government agent should be like. While this was firmly rooted in the suspense genre, the author also wasn’t afraid to borrow liberally from many other genres in order to make things fit together. The combination of that alongside the reinvention of tropes made this a memorable read for sure.

Tales of Adventure with Nap Lapkin should be read by anyone who enjoys a tongue-in-cheek approach to the mystery genre.

His mind swipe left Zoe aware of only a small portion of her powers, which she now uses to grow vegetables for her busy café. But when her brother is kidnapped and the existence of the Talents revealed, she must ask Jake for help—even though being near him triggers panic attacks she doesn’t understand.

A BDSM club is the perfect place for Jake to manage his endless need for dominance and the underground world the Talents inhabit. When Zoe needs him, Jake must lead the charge and take on the only power greater than themselves—a superhuman army modeled after the Talents—and the one woman who can threaten his entire world.

Imagine being told for your whole life to keep a secret. And not only that, but you have no desire to share said secret, and just do whatever is necessary to keep your family intact and functioning whilst keeping all your heads down. This is what life is like for Zoe, at least to begin with. All that changes when someone walks into her café and tries to rob her.

This was a great take on Talents, and each chapter gave you something else to think about and focus on. The connection between Jake and Zoe was hot, even more so when it becomes clear just what he did to Zoe when they were younger. There are hints of BDSM in here (they are based under a BDSM club, after all) but the reasons for this all become clear. About Jake – I understand why he did what he did, but I don’t like it. As for Zoe, she is doing what she thinks needs to be done. As for whether it will work or not, well, that remains to be seen.

The writing is smooth, with plenty of steam thrown in too. There are plenty of characters here to like or loathe, and some you won’t even know which way to feel.

As you may have guessed, this book ends on a cliffhanger and will definitely leave you wanting more. This was a new-to-me author and one I will absolutely be keeping an eye out for. Plus, I need to continue with this series!! Cliffhanger, remember?!
