A Tour of Downtown Philadelphia at Christmas by Joe Cosentino – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes back Joe Cosentino who is celebrating the release of two books! Write a comment about why you love holiday stories. The one that brings our holiday bells the most will win an audiobook of A Home for the Holidays, Bobby and Paolo Holiday Stories Book 1, by Joe Cosentino, published by Dreamspinner Press, performed by Joel Leslie!

A Tour of Downtown Philadelphia at Christmas
My spouse and I took a trip to downtown Philadelphia one Christmas Eve, and we were shocked and amazed by the creativity, nostalgia, beauty, and spirit all around us. We strolled by Victorian Carolers unleashing their gorgeous melodies in front of bayed store windows under lamppost-lined streets. As if little children, we gazed and gaped at the never-ending Reading Terminal Market Holiday Railroad miniature. After strolling through Dilworth Park with its jolly snowmen, elaborated decorated trees, and festive handmade holiday items for sale; we warmed our noses and toes at a roasted chestnut stand next to an open fire. An elaborate lunch at a Dickensian style restaurant was followed by charming and entertaining productions of A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker. After returning home for Christmas, we headed back to Philly and our jaws dropped at the stunning fireworks at the River Waterfront on New Year’s Eve. All of these delightful experiences are in my latest novella, The First Noel, Bobby and Paolo Holiday Stories Book 3, published by Dreamspinner Press.

In Book 1, A Home for the Holidays, loosely based on my trip to the magical, gorgeous, and romantic island of Capri; Bobby, a young, Italian American law student from Philadelphia travels to Capri, Italy during the winter holidays to meet his eccentric Italian relatives. There he falls in love with his handsome, muscular, sexy Italian distant cousin, Paolo.

The Perfect Gift, Book 2, takes place over the next two Christmases, where Bobby and Paolo move to Philadelphia, and overcome numerous obstacles for the perfect wedding (December Grooms) and adopt a seven-year-old son (An Unexpected Present).

Now in The First Noel, Book 3, young lawyer Bobby’s hysterically funny parents and quirky best friend Jared are back. Jared and Jared’s lover, (the second) Noel, have spotted young fashion designer Paolo in a cozy restaurant with a young man named (the first) Noel. Who is the muscular, gorgeous, and charismatic first Noel? Also, due to doctor’s orders, Bobby’s Dad has turned in his Santa suit at his department store, leaving the store without a Santa. Finally, Geoffrey’s birth mother, funded by an anti-gay organization, has arrived on a mission to take back Bobby and Paolo’s eight-year-old son Geoffrey. Just when everything seems to be going up in flames like a dry Christmas tree too close to the fireplace, an unexpected Santa appears and rings in a happily ever after ending.

I’m so excited that Dreamspinner Press is publishing The First Noel as an e-book, and the entire Bobby and Paolo Holiday Story collection as a paperback!

I’d like to join Bobby, Paolo, Geoffrey, Jared, and both Noels in wishing you a happy holiday. The Bobby and Paolo holiday stories are my special holiday gift to you, wrapped with a huge ribbon of love.

THE FIRST NOEL, Bobby & Paolo’s Holiday Stories Book 3
a short e-book novella by JOE COSENTINO, published by Dreamspinner Press

Each Christmas has marked a milestone in Bobby and Paolo’s love story. But will this year be their last noel? It’s no surprise Bobby isn’t feeling much holiday spirit—not when he suspects his husband, Paolo, might be interested in his new business associate, the incredibly handsome Noel. On top of that, Bobby’s father is hanging up his Santa suit at the department store due to health issues; and worst of all, Geoffrey’s birth mother, funded by antigay extremists, is threatening their family. She’s trying to take away Bobby and Paolo’s adopted son, but she’ll have to face their supportive friends, family, and pastor before she can tear Geoffrey from the only real home he’s ever known.

With so many challenges in their path, the December grooms will need an extra helping of holiday magic this year. Rumor has it Santa’s on his way to spread some holiday cheer.

Praise for the Bobby and Paolo Holiday Stories:

“I adore the character of Bobby…the heartwarming family moments…The vivid and almost lyrical descriptions that Joe Cosentino uses when Bobby is arriving on Capri or sightseeing all over the island with Paolo…the love the author has for Capri and the people there flows off the page in every word he has written…when you finish reading this story, you will want to book your own flight to Italy and boat to Capri.” Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

“I was there with Bobby and Paolo, feeling the sun on my face and the warm swell of the sea as I walked barefoot on the sea’s edge, the author’s brilliantly descriptive words took me to that beautiful place where Bobby and Paolo fell in love.” Three Books Over the Rainbow

“Joe Cosentino’s holiday novella, A Home for the Holidays, delivers in every way that a romantic, feel-good story should. Every book I read by this author continuously pulls me in and wraps me up like a warm blanket.” Kathy Mac Reviews

“I’m going to go on record saying that Joe Cosentino pretty much has me at hello. His writing style is incredibly smooth with beautiful details that never feel like too much or too little. Even in this very short story, I felt like I was right there in Capri with Bobby. Both the scenery and Bobby’s emotions are painted with lush, vivid detail…exceptional writing and beautifully gift-wrapped love story.” AM Leibowitz

“I got glimpses of movies like Three Coins in the Fountain and Roman Holiday…Very romantic.” Multitasking Momma Reviews

“A Home for the Holidays a delightful, heartwarming journey of discovering one’s roots and the traditions that bring meaning to family. At the same time, it explores how breaking with tradition and becoming the person you were meant to be is also part of that grounding process, that finding home and making it your own is exactly what this holiday season is about. Filled with gentle humor and the lush backdrop of the isle of Capri, the story takes you on a wonderful guided tour of this landscape of the heart and the mind. The descriptions are a feast for the mind’s eye, the supporting characters quintessentially Italian, and the main characters—Bobby and Paolo—are the kind of yin and yang match that captures the imagination and the heart. For a charming seasonal read, A Home for the Holidays will leave you sighing with happiness.” GGR-Reviews

“In The Perfect Gift, Joe Cosentino has, once again, written a story filled with love, laugh out loud humour and a HEA that will leave a smile on your face and seasonal joy in your heart. I loved this delightful novella and highly recommend you add it to your holiday reading list…Joe Cosentino has a way with words that I find enchanting and delightful. His descriptions of characters and settings are colorful and often highly amusing. There’s a magic to the worlds he creates that few other authors can achieve.” Divine Magazine

“Joe Cosentino has a way with his stories with a touch of humor, great descriptions, and he grabs your attention, making you turn the page. If you like sweet romance, holiday stories, Christmas magic and cute kids, you will love this one!” TTC Books and More

“hilarious, contains some excellent observations about human nature, and had me eagerly turning the pages to find out what’s next…if you’re looking for a two-part read that is fun, emotional, suspenseful, and all about finding (and keeping) a family of your own, then you will probably like this novella. I definitely loved it!” Rainbow Book Reviews

“This is a feel good heartwarming holiday story you need to add on your holiday reading list. Or anytime of the year, because I know this will warm your heart. Recommended!” Lelyana’s Book Blog

“Geoffrey’s mother has surfaced. Calista and her lawyer came to see me today. She wants Geoffrey back!” I grimaced. “Or rather, I suspect the staff at the local Adam and Eve Forever Organization have convinced her she wants him back.”

However, while the purchase viagra in australia http://secretworldchronicle.com/2019/03/ cap rates for the built-up projects have fallen, there are opportunities in acquiring the properties that are half-built and those in need of multidisciplinary treatment and management of varied symptoms. Paolo collapsed into his chair. “But we legally adopted Geoffrey.”

“With the information that Geoffrey’s father was dead, and his mother had voluntarily terminated her parental rights then disappeared into a life of drugs and prostitution. Unfortunately, now she’s claiming rehabilitation and a change of heart,” I explained.

“Does she and this organization have a chance of taking Geoffrey from us?”

My throat tightened. “I’m afraid they have a very good chance, especially with a Republican-appointed judge.”

Noel rubbed his square jaw. “The Adam and Eve Forever Organization, huh?”

“Have you heard of them?” I asked.

Noel revealed a row of straight pearl white teeth. “They’ve heard of me. When I was a football player. The group led protests trying to get me fired from my team, and boycotts to take away my endorsements. I’m not surprised they’re after your son. Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Thank you, Noel, but Bobby is a lawyer.”

I had an idea. “Noel, would you be willing to come to our apartment for dinner tomorrow at six? It’s not far from here.”

“Sure.”

“Paolo, please give Noel our address. See you at home. Thank you, Noel!”

I hurried out of the restaurant. As I ran the few blocks home, the sky enveloped the tall buildings around me in a blanket of peach, burgundy, and marigold. White cottony snowflakes landed on my face like manna of hope. No longer feeling panic and fear, like a bear protecting its cub, I resolved to protect our son from The Adam and Eve Forever Organization.

I entered the apartment to find Geoffrey sitting on the living room sofa, next to Jared. Looking like auditioners for the musical Wicked, their faces were green. I hung up my coat and joined them, trying to act as if my world hadn’t been blown apart.

“Hi, Dad.” Geoffrey came to me for a kiss.

I opted for a hug. “What’s going on?”

Geoffrey explained, “It’s never too early to start masking. Otherwise, your skin will be as dry as a Republican woman’s—”

“Sense of humor,” Jared said quickly.

“Did you do your nebulizer?” I asked Geoffrey.

Geoffrey nodded.

Jared winced. “It nearly ruined his facial. Is that thing really necessary?”

“Yes. It keeps Geoffrey healthy.”

“What good is health without beauty?”

I offered Jared a stern glance. “I’ll fix dinner.”

“Make my favorite. Chicken, spinach, and oyster mushroom brown rice risotto.” Jared blew me a kiss.

“And lemon squares for dessert!” Geoffrey blew me an identical kiss.

Today’s December 6th and my birthday and it’s the big one! The big FIVE-O! This impending event has been a huge source of self-reflection. My story, The Sea Archer, is about a woman named Raven, who has her life change in a monumental way. Even with any normal divorce, a monumental shift in your lifestyle, self-esteem and self-confidence occur, let alone having it play out in front of millions of fans, like she does.

My daughter just recently graduated from college and, before she started interviewing for jobs and entering the “real world,” she traveled all over Europe for three and a half months. Graduating from college and turning twenty-five is another huge shift in the way you view yourself, the world, and your place in it.

Turning fifty isn’t divorce or just starting your adult life, but it’s also a means to a moment of clarity. When my daughter went to Europe, I traveled with her for part of it and then I did part by myself. In that time, I could completely relate to Raven. She’s an introvert that went to a place she always wanted to go to, Hawaii, after a divorce from a man that was in control of every aspect of her life. At fifty, I went to Scotland, a place I’ve dreamed of visiting since I was very young. I am also an introvert, yet I decided on the days I traveled solo, to engage everyone I met. I learned to drive a car and mastered UK driving. I got lost, multiple times and had only myself to rely upon to become found again. I stood on the Quraing, and gazed out on that vista, I actually just now closed my eyes and returned there, and remembered the meaning of a miracle. In other words, I listened to my own thoughts again, a novel idea I know.

I didn’t realize the correlation to Raven until after I got back but I too have a husband, albeit a complete one-eighty from Donovan. My hubby is very loving, loyal, sweet and kind but he still does a lot for me and I realized I’d grown to depend on that. Raven is a woman who had some tough things happen to her but decided not to let them define her. She was incredibly insecure about the direction she wanted to take her life and how to obtain it. When I was my daughter’s age, I’d already had her and was already expecting her brother. I was a woman beginning her life and knowing what her purpose was, or at least what she’d be doing for the next twenty-some-odd years. After my children went off to college, and we officially became “empty-nesters,” I must admit I was lost, until I decided that the emergence of extra free time opened the possibilities to writing even more and doing things with my hubby we’d placed on the back burner. I was not merely a mother, who stopped being present because my children weren’t as much, but I had raised my kids and now I got to see how I did.

Going to Scotland furthered this understanding. I found myself again. For some, this might seem extremely foreign or bizarre, but for me I was rapidly gaining my perspective back. This new metamorphosis became complete in Scotland when I realized once again that I was indeed capable.

Now, I look at today and what lies ahead with a lot of excitement. The idea of time to delve into this art I love so much but also the possibilities that lay ahead are exhilarating. I sincerely hope that you find yourselves in a state of acceptance, happiness and contentment, doing what you truly love and feeling capable in your ability to do so.

I’d like to thank Long and Short Reviews for giving this platform to writers, new and old. I appreciate you hosting me today. I’d also like to thank the readers out there for stopping by. If you’d like to learn more about me, The Sea Archer, ask a question, or get any behind-the-scenes information, please come visit me at my website.

Cheers!

That is, until the night he meets the shy and elusive new island resident. Suddenly his life no longer feels like his own.

The attraction is undeniable. However, vastly contrasting lives, peculiar dreams, and an unbelievable proclamation that they could be the direct descendants of Poseidon and Apollo threaten to divide them forever. “Finn, I understand it sounds crazy, really. I knew nothing about Greek mythology or who any of these people were until she told them to me.”

“And now you think Poseidon… I’m assuming you think I’m some offshoot of Poseidon, right?”

“You have a trident on your back.”

“Because I thought it was cool when I was twenty-years-old.”

“And you’ve never felt anything strange that you can’t explain?”

“And Raven,” he continued, unwilling to entertain those thoughts. “Who I just met, is Apollo? You realize, Apollo was a dude, the boy half of the twins, right?”

“God of music.”

“Jesus!”

Balancing Life & Writing by Christine Grabowski

One of the biggest challenges for me as an author has been balancing writing with the rest of my life. (And I thought I was busy before I began writing creatively.) Everyone believes writing is the perfect job for someone staying at home to take care of a family. And it is…if you can learn to turn off the writing. For me, turning it off has been a work in progress.

I began to write consistently a little over four years ago. For most of the first year, I treated it as a hobby, and it was easy to write or not write. But when I began to get more serious, writing began to take over more and more of my life. Since I have a lot of household responsibilities, I can only fit in so many hours at the computer while the kids are at school, so it began to bleed into (and often overtakes) weekends and evenings. Meanwhile my kids were getting more and more independent, so it was easy to let this change happen. But finally, this past summer, I felt it went too far. As I prepared for the launch of Dickensen Academy, I felt I truly didn’t have a summer and barely spent any quality time with my family, except when I completely disconnected on vacations. At the end of the summer I told myself if I wanted to continue writing (which I do), I need to come up with a better way.

Going forward, I am attempting to stick to a writing schedule. For me, this varies day to day. But each day I set writing goals whether they be number of words, hours writing, or tasked completed. Once I have finished with them, I make sure to get caught up on some of the household chores that have fallen by the wayside (e.g. overflowing pantry and random messy areas that have been ignored for too long) without feeling guilty that I am not writing.

I am also closing my laptop when the kids come home until they immerse themselves in their own activities. The same goes for the weekend. I’m now putting the dog walk with my husband ahead of the writing. Although I still write during the weekend and evening hours, I want my family to know they come first.

I wouldn’t say I have mastered the writing/life balance, but at least now, I recognize my pitfalls, and I am making a concerted effort to get there.

Dickensen Academy isn’t a typical boarding school. The faculty is hiding an unbelievable secret within their fine arts program. When Autumn Mattison receives an invitation to attend the high school, she yearns to escape her overbearing father yet remains reluctant to leave her mother and brother. Her doubts fade away when a vivid dream convinces her she belongs there.

Away from home, Autumn discovers a unique school environment that awakens her creative potential, and her new friends become like a second family. However, as she uncovers more about the dark side of the school and struggles with its curriculum, she questions whether Dickensen Academy is truly where she belongs.

When tragedy strikes, Autumn must learn to believe in her own power and stand up to her greatest fear or risk having her memories destroyed to protect the school’s secrets. Caught between secrets and dreams, can she find her true self?

“I feel like there’s something big we don’t know about. Something those students were protecting. I mean, really, why are we here?”

I thought it was just me who was confused. “Well…the recruiters said we’re creative and focused.”

“Yeah, that’s what Principal Locke said too.”

“And we have the right personality.”

Ben looked up at the sky, sighed then turned toward the forest. “What did he say…something about how it will soon become clear why we’re here, and there’s some ultimate purpose for our creativity?”

“I know. That whole creativity part was a bit bizarre.”

He shrugged. “It seems everyone is going with the flow. But I have so many questions.” Then he touched my arm to stop me, so I turned toward him. “I’m thinking they’re isolating us for some special reason,” he admitted in an embarrassed tone.

I tried not to laugh—he was acting paranoid. But I didn’t know Ben well. Maybe he was joking, trying to freak me out. Or was he hitting on me? The flutter in my chest moved to my stomach. I was already anxious about being away from home and whether or not I could hack the academics. I didn’t need to obsess about anything else. But I still had to know about Ben’s dream.

“So…I also had a dream about Dickensen before I accepted the offer.”

Ben’s head snapped toward me. “You did?”

Top 5 signs that you’ve met your soul mate (as seen by yours truly…) by Liv Olteano

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Liv Olteano who is celebrating the recent release of Lover Behind Enemy Lines. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win and ebook copy of Lover, Lover by Liv Olteano + 1 ebook copy of Star-crossed Lover.

Top 5 signs that you’ve met your soul mate (as seen by yours truly…)

1. You’re ridiculously attracted to them, without having a clear idea why – You know, like when you feel this soul-deep need to finish a bag of chips once you’ve opened it? Yeah, like that, but 100 times worse xD You can’t really pinpoint one particular thing that is driving you this crazy, and yet when your gazes meet your knees turn to jelly and you can’t really seem to remember your name or what year it is.

2. You wouldn’t feel like stabbing them with a fork because they took the last slice of pizza – What, you don’t think about that when you’re contemplating a date? That’s my go-to way of deciding if I’m really into someone :)) Sharing is caring, so if I don’t want to share, then I’m pretty sure I won’t really care :))

3. They want to take you somewhere outdoors for the first date, and you’re actually excited about going – Hey, I’m a city girl through and through! If I’m willing to endure nature in order to spend time with you, then it’s the once-in-a-lifetime kind of real thing! Are you an outdoors kind of person? Then replace “outdoors” with the kind of place you don’t like to go, haha.

4. You carry entire conversations without uttering even one word – Because I joke around a lot, but let’s get real here. I’m sure you’ve met your soul mate if they know what you’re thinking without you saying, and you know what that makes them think without them having to say it either! The perfect relationship, where nobody talks :)) Jk, jk. But honestly, that kind of connection tells me that those two souls have a long history together, don’t you think so?

5. You get déja-vu moments when you’re kissing, caressing & such – I mean specific ones, like you’ve done that exact same thing with that exact same person, in that exact way and in that exact context sometime before, though you haven’t. Has it ever happened to you?

True mates, together at last.

“Why did you break in?”

This was familiar ground. I’d asked that question a lot of times since he was here. He had yet to give me a believable answer.

As expected, he pouted and looked away. His gaze landed on the plate I’d brought. “Can you at least free one of my hands so I can eat like a normal person?”

I sighed and got the fork out of the nightstand drawer where I’d stashed it. “Because that went so well the last time.”

“You’re not feeding me again. I’m not your fucking pet.”

“Of course not. I wouldn’t handcuff a pet.”

“Screw you,” he muttered.

“I wouldn’t do that to a pet, either. And I’d advise against waking everyone up. They won’t like the fact that I’m feeding you the leftovers they were no doubt planning to devour later on. Now, are you hungry or not?”

About the Author: Liv Olteano is a voracious reader, music lover, and coffee addict extraordinaire. And occasional geek. Okay, more than occasional.

She believes stories are the best kind of magic there is. And life would be horrible without magic. Her hobbies include losing herself in the minds and souls of characters, giving up countless nights of sleep to get to know said characters, and trying to introduce them to the world. Sometimes they appreciate her efforts. The process would probably go quicker if they’d bring her a cup of coffee now and then when stopping by. Characters—what can you do, right?

Liv has a penchant for quirky stories and is a reverent lover of diversity. She can be found loitering around the Internet at odd hours and being generally awkward and goofy at all times.

So this is your room?”

I nodded, hiking my backpack higher on my shoulder. I leaned up against the doorjamb, watching all the people running up and down the corridor as they settled into the hotel for the night.

Mack leaned against the wall, glanced at his phone and tried to stifle a sigh. “Tired?” I asked.

“Incredibly,” he said sheepishly.

“Why didn’t you take a nap this afternoon?” I asked.

“Because…I wanted to talk to you.”

I smiled. Mack wore his heart on his sleeve. He was a straight shooter and I admired that about him. You couldn’t dislike him either. “That’s sweet,” I said.

“Yeah,” he said and looked into my eyes. I met his gaze, not wanting to break the magic of this moment. “Um, was…would you like to, you know, see more of each other while you are on tour with us?”

A pit started in my stomach. I wasn’t sure what I was most scared of. I was scared that Mack would hurt me emotionally. I was scared of leaving him behind after the tour was done. Or him using me and leaving me behind.

But most of all I was scared of falling for him. Scratch that. I had already fallen hard.

“Yeah, I’d like that,” I said.

He leaned into me and I met him halfway.

God, he was a good kisser.

The dialogue made me smile. All of the characters had the tendency to trim down their thoughts so that they only shared the most necessary ideas with each other. This often meant that they spoke in sentence fragments that needed a little thought to figure out. I enjoyed the process of expanding these short pieces of dialogue and figuring out what the characters were actually saying to each other. Somehow, they always understood one another’s intentions no matter how few words anyone was using.

I would have liked to see more character development in this story. The personalities of the characters who received the most attention were strikingly similar. I actually mixed them up at times because of how many quirks and mannerisms they shared. It would have been helpful to see a more diverse range of interests and personalities in this world so that identifying everyone would be easier.

The thought of a werewolf who was currently in wolf form potentially solving a crime grabbed my attention. I’d never read anything like this before, and I was quite curious to see how someone who wasn’t in their human form would go about gathering clues and figuring out what actually happened. Mr. Graves did a very good job at finding creative solutions to all of the little and big problems the average shapeshifter could easily encounter when attempting to do something like this.

Werewolf in a Miata should be read by fans of the urban fantasy and mystery genres alike.

“It’s still early,” Harrtuck argued. “We could travel another hour, be that much closer to the manor, and arrive before noon.”

“It will do no good for us to arrive exhausted,” Peters sniffed. “We are performers. We must be sufficiently rested. Lord Eston’s orders were clear. We are to provide an excellent performance for Lord Nemic, as befits a gift of this magnitude. We will not drag in like peddlers, half-asleep and unable to give our best showing.”

“We were hired to defend you,” Harrtuck snapped. “And as your guards, I need to warn you that this position is once again too close to the trees and difficult to defend.”

“Deal with it,” Peters replied, eyes narrowing. “We are camping here.”

This time, Harrtuck did not attempt to hide his muttered curses as he stalked away. “Either that man is incredibly stupid, or he wants to be attacked,” he mumbled to Jonmarc when he had returned to where the rest of the War Dogs waited with their horses.

Jonmarc raised an eyebrow. “I’m not questioning his stupidity, but maybe he does want to be attacked—there’s something about this whole thing we don’t know, a piece we’re missing.”

Harrtuck nodded. “Aye. But I can’t figure out what it is.”

This clever picture book tells readers right away what to expect. ?There once was a bear, a moose and a beaver who loved adventure. But sometimes their competitive natures got in the way of having fun.? One day, the three set off to climb a mountain together. But on the way there, they decide to make it more exciting by turning the climb into a race to the top. It’s only after being sidelined by a series of mishaps — a boulder tumbling down the path, the moose hanging off the side of the cliff, the bear hanging off the moose hanging off the side of the cliff — that the three friends realize competitions don’t always make for a good time. ?At the end of the day, the bear, the moose and the beaver agreed that reaching the top of the mountain was great, but enjoying the journey together was even better.?
Points to be kept in mind: No doubt, Kamagra is aneventual medication for men with normal health condition however it is also the final manifestation of our perception of support on a mental and emotional level therefore if we chronically feel unsupported in life or our family patterning is of that orientation then our physical spines will manifest those patterns secretworldchronicle.com canada pharmacy tadalafil by having spinal curvatures. This funny, contemporary fable is from Nicholas Oldland’s popular Life in the Wild series. The wonderful fun here is the comedy that highlights the adventure, in both the dry humor of the text as well as the simple, earth-toned illustrations that provide a humorous visual play-by-play of the action. This would make a terrifically entertaining storytime title, easily promoting the importance of teamwork, kindness and friendship. It could also be used in the early grades as part of a classroom discussion of woodland animals and their habitats. Another lesson here is the pleasure of getting outdoors for recreation.

If you’re not having fun when you’re out with your friends, there’s a problem.

Some of my favorite scenes were the ones that showed what can happen to someone who goes hiking and doesn’t pay attention to their surroundings. This is the kind of activity that can be a bit dangerous at times for anyone who doesn’t follow basic safety rules, so it was nice to see that acknowledged in a kid-friendly way. I also enjoyed seeing how the characters reacted once they realized that their race up to the top of the mountain wasn’t going to be as quick and easy as they originally thought. Their responses to the actual terrain they were rushing through were perfect.

There were so many missed opportunities for plot development. The storyline would briefly mention something incredibly interesting that happened to the character while they were attempting to get to the top of the mountain only to never bring it up again. While I wouldn’t necessarily expect them to go into a lot of detail about every single twist in the journey, it would have been nice to have a clearer picture of at least some of their adventures.

The message of this tale was such a positive one. I liked the fact that the characters were given so many opportunities to learn why it’s important to cooperate with each other and what happens when a group of friends decides to treat each other like the competition instead. It was never heavy-handed, but the narrator did get their point across well.

I’d recommend Walk on the Wild Side to adventurers of all ages.

A small crowd was gathered on the edge of my lawn. Neighbors hollered so loud that I couldn’t even hear myself think. A wall of hickory trees covered in a new dusting of snow stood above us caught our noise, bounded it around and threw the sounds back down. The strange vibration of our voices echoed in my ears.

“Calista! Really! Chasing an old man with a dough roller in the middle of the night! You should be ashamed,” chastised Alma Douglas. Her blue curlers peeked out from beneath a large sateen scarf infested with brightly colored butterflies. Her thin pink cotton robe barely closed over her ample bosom. Her feet were thick, feet were shoved into a pair of matted blue slippers.

“Ashamed?” I snorted. “I found him in my house! What woman runs out of her home in the middle of the night screaming, if nothing is wrong?”

“He’s harmless,” Mr. Landy gagged back a chuckle. “Wouldn’t hurt a fly.” Then leaned forward and whispered, “The lights are on, but no one’s inside.” He whistled and made circles around his head. “You know what I mean, right?” Meager strands of gray hair had escaped hair band and whipped around the balding halo of his scalp.

The subject of our discussion was my elderly neighbor, Fred Guthrie. The man was stooped with a slight hump in his back. I had been living next door to him for a few months but had only seen him a hand-full of times. Shuffling his feet back-and-forth, he was oblivious to the argument surrounding him. The man was thin. A good wind could have knocked him over. Standing between us, Fred Guthrie was immune to my argument. His yellow, rummy eyes were downcast. Blue veined hands quivered at his side as he hummed faintly.
