Once a year, from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve, Shay gets a visit from Harper, one of Santa’s Elves. Their magical time together may only last a week, but Shay anticipates it the entire year and throws himself wholeheartedly into the kink-filled week. The only way their time could be better would be if Harper could stay longer.

When November rolls around again and the kinky gifts start arriving, Shay can only hope he’s been a good enough boy this year to be granted more time with the Elf he loves. Will Santa be able to deliver this year?

Every year on Christmas Eve Harper turned up in Shay’s life and until midnight New Year’s Eve they indulged in every wicked, carnal delight imaginable. Shay loved Christmas. This year with a bunch of new sex toys to play with Shay knows he and Harper will have the best week imaginable. And particularly with those five golden anal beads…

This is a light, fun, wickedly delicious short story. I loved learning about Harper and Shay – and why they only get one week a year together – and wow they pack a whole year’s worth of loving and sex into that short break. It’s clear that both Shay and Harper are devoted to each other and deeply in love. I enjoyed their connection and commitment to each other, even if they only get to spend the one week a year together. The sex was smoking hot but also richly emotional and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. I found the kink to be tasteful and delicious – and will certainly make me think differently of pine tree branches…

With a happy, deeply satisfying ending I really enjoyed this quick read. Full of Christmas joy and steamy sex it had me licking my lips and eager to get back into that Christmas spirit.

When Edwin Barlow, the Earl of Blakeborough, agrees to help his best friend’s impetuous ward, Lady Clarissa Lindsey, in her time of need, he knows he’s in for trouble. He’s been hunting for someone to wed, and she’ll just get in the way. Although captivated by the whip-smart, free-spirited beauty, he fears she’d be all wrong as a wife … if she would even take such a gruff cynic for her husband. Too bad he wants nothing more than to have her for his own.

Clarissa has no intention of marrying anyone—not Edwin, whom she’s sure would be an overbearing husband, and certainly not the powerful French diplomat stalking her. But when matters escalate with the diplomat, she chooses Edwin’s gallant offer of a marriage between friends in hopes that it will deter her stalker. She expects nothing more than an amiable union, but their increasingly tempestuous kisses prove more than she bargained for. When her stalker’s vow to expose the lovers’ deepest secrets threatens to destroy their blossoming attraction, will their tenuous bond withstand public ruin, or will Edwin lose all that’s important to him to protect his bride?

The Study of Seduction includes a hefty emotional plot that deals with being a survivor of physical violence at a time when such things were never discussed, dealt with, confronted or acknowledged. Women back in the day were victimized twice over because for some twisted reason, society always seemed to lay the blame on the woman no matter how innocent, pure or precious she was. There were some men who had their heads screwed on straight, their compassion and willingness to put the blame squarely where it belonged, on the criminal, made them unsung heroes; and then there were other men who all too easily believed another man over a woman, misogyny at its most vile. This novel explores the results of those two types of men, and how it dominos in time, and a woman who has to struggle to be perfect for society, play by its rules, act like she’s like every other eligible lady looking to make a match, yet never reveals what happened to her. In fact she’s too embarrassed and has been dealing with it on her own – not that that’s working out too well for her. This is the backdrop of the story in which a reader will watch as a romance between Clarissa and Edwin emerges. The plot is a serious one for sure, but the romance between the hero and heroine is beautiful, poignant, challenging, frustrating (for Edwin) and delightful.

Ms. Jefferies even adds another plot conflict to spice things up. Seriously, The Study of Seduction isn’t for readers who want fluffy, cotton candy, brainless fun. This is flavored like a romantic suspense novel, with a mystery to solve and daring villains that seem to have unlimited power to plague the heroine. Certainly, this book is a page flipper because the pace is brisk, the dialogue is crisp and the personality byplays between Clarissa and Edwin were engaging, entertaining and many times, heart wrenching or just so incredibly romantic, they made me swoon.

Another strong element is the secondary supporting characters. They were such a great asset to the novel as a whole. Considering the sheer meatiness of the plot and the intrigues that abounded, the main characters needed people in their corner and the author provided a wonderful cast to help out. The best part came at the end with a big, happy, unexpected surprise that made the happy ever after extra special and exciting. I was thrilled!

My favorite aspect of the book was Edwin’s love for Clarissa. For readers who feel a romance is healthier when physical expressions are explored, fear not. Edwin works magic and eventually, Clarissa gets into the swing of things and discovers her inner playful siren. It’s all good.

The Study of Seduction is a must read for fans of Ms. Jeffries. This one is a winner. It’s busy, and easy to read even if it’s about a subject that is a little dark because the author balanced everything just right. I cannot think of a single thing that I would change about this novel. It’s well done, well written and an easy book to recommend.

Liang is a painter. While there’s nothing else he’d rather do, he’s ready to be finished with his current commission; he’s been in one place far too long and it’s starting to wear. His only relief is in the lucid dreams he’s been having. They feature the same strange man, and though he seems to find Liang incredibly frustrating, he keeps returning to Liang’s dreams. The conversations are often odd, but the company is welcome.

Xerxes is an incubus. When he’s drawn to the dream of an attractive foreigner, he’s expecting a fun night and a tasty meal. He is certainly not expecting to be given a sweater. All his seduction attempts fail spectacularly, leaving him annoyed and confused.

Dreams don’t usually have any affect at all on what happens to people during the day when they’re awake. Sometimes, though, this rule gets broken.

I liked seeing how slowly the relationship between the two main characters developed. It felt completely natural to me because of how much time the author gave Xerxes and Liang to get to know each other. They worked well together as friends, and that’s something I really enjoy finding in romantic stories. If I can see two people being best friends, it makes it incredibly easy for me to imagine them as something more than that.

There were pacing issues. The beginning and ending were both exciting and well paced, but I did notice a slowdown in the middle. While part of this was due to the main character need to figure out what was going on with all of the weird dreams he’d been having, it was distracting for me as a reader to move from something so quickly paced to a storyline that was suddenly much slower. Either pacing style would have worked, but switching between both of them was confusing.

This was one of the funniest stories I’ve read in a long time. Liang’s personality was so innocent that the idea of him meeting an incubus made me giggle. These definitely weren’t two characters that I’d ever think to put into the same plot. It was hilarious to see them attempt to understand each other, especially later on once Xerxes realized why Liang wasn’t responding to his advances.

Porcelain Doll by Joe Cosentino – Q&A

Joe Cosentino has just released the second book in the Jana Lane mystery series, Porcelain Doll, and has stopped by to visit with us.

Can you tell us a little bit about creating the Jana Lane mystery series?

As a child I loved child stars like Shirley Temple, Hayley Mills, and Patty Duke, seeing their movies over and over. So I created a heroine who was the biggest child star ever until she was attacked on the studio lot at eighteen years old. In PAPER DOLL the secret behind that attack is exposed.

In PORCELAIN DOLL, it is 1982 and Jana is thirty-nine years old, living in a mansion in Hyde Park, New York. She makes a comeback film and uncovers who is being murdered on the set and why. Her heart is set aflutter by her incredibly gorgeous co-star, America’s heartthrob Jason Apollo. The other suspects include Jana’s James Dean type young co-star, her older John Wayne type co-star, her children’s Eve Harrington type nanny, the film’s gossipy makeup and hair artist, a local reverend trying to stop the film’s production, and Jason’s agent.

In SATIN DOLL (not yet released), Jana and family head to Washington, DC, where Jana plays a US senator in a new film, and becomes embroiled in a murder and corruption at the senate chamber. She also embarks on a romance with Chris Bruno, the ex-professional football player detective.

In CHINA DOLL (not yet released), Jana heads to New York City to star in a Broadway play, enchanted by her gorgeous co-star Peter Stevens, and faced with murder on stage and off.

Through the course of the books, Jana not only solves the mysteries, but also reclaims the courage and fortitude she had as a child. This is an important message for all of us. As one reviewer wrote, she starts out as a wounded bird, and ends as tiger.

Was PAPER DOLL well received?

Yes, here are a few of the rave reviews: “Paper Doll is a superbly crafted mystery with an eclectic cast of characters that will engage you and elicit some very emotional responses as you are completely caught up in the events that unfold in these pages. Everyone has secrets and the people in Paper Doll have them in spades!” Fresh Fiction

“If you like novels that are filled with new and old Hollywood, and a range of sub-plots, you are going to love this!” Saguaro Moon Reviews

“I liked that there was enough evidence for each of the suspects to keep me guessing until the very end.” Molly Lolly Reviews

“Joe Cosentino knows how to keep his readers’ interest with every page.” Universal Creativity Digital Magazine

“The setting, the characterization and the plot keep you turning the pages.” The Book Mistress

“Joe Cosentino has crafted an engaging tale of secrets, lies and deceit set in that crazy, ego driven scene called Hollywood.” Deb Sanders

“Mr. Cosentino has produced a masterpiece of mystery” “The story gripped me from the start and there were enough twists and turns, with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure, to keep hold of me until the end of the book.” “Great book, can’t wait for book 2.” Readers’ Favorite

Who is your favorite character in PORCELAIN DOLL? And why?

Jana’s agent, Simon, is my favorite character for five reasons. He is amazingly resilient, old world Hollywood, incredibly funny, loyal to Jana, and most importantly, I want to play him in the movie version!

Which one of your characters was the hardest one to write? And why?

Reverend Charlton, the reverend protesting Jana’s film, was difficult to write since he is so frightening. I could never understand why some people use religion to try to attack and demonize others.

Do you think Christians would be offended by his character?

I sure hope not. Jana seems like a true Christian to me since she tries to love her neighbor as herself, not judge others, and help the downtrodden and outcasts. Reverend Charlton doesn’t seem very Christian to me since he uses his power and wealth to demean others.

Which one of your characters did you enjoy writing the most? And why?

Jana’s young co-star, Trevor, was fun since he has such a huge ego and is certainly a rebel without a cause

You’ve acted with Bruce Willis (A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM onstage), Nathan Lane (THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT onstage), Rosie O’Donnell (AT&T Industrial), Holland Taylor (ABC-TV movie MY MOTHER WAS NEVER A KID), Charles Keating (NBC’s ANOTHER WORLD), and Jason Robards (Commercial Credit Computer commercial) to name a few. Did you use your background as an actor to write PORCELAIN DOLL?

Definitely! As one reviewer of PAPER DOLL wrote, I used my knowledge of show business to devilish ends. Actually, I used my background in each of the Jana Lane novels, since I know the ins and outs on a movie set. Thankfully nobody was murdered on my sets.

Why did you set the books in the 1980’s?

I love the music, hair styles, clothing, and decadence of that era. I had great fun writing about Jana’s mansion, wardrobe, makeup, and hairstyles. I was also able to incorporate some of the music, films, television shows, Broadway shows, and political and social events of the era, including the AIDS epidemic. I needed to do my research and remember back (though I was a mere child in the 1980’s-hah).

What are the difficulties in writing a series?

On the positive side, the leading characters are so real to me, each book is like visiting with old friends. I love Jana and I enjoy every moment with her. On the negative side, for continuity I need to keep a notebook full of information on each character and the various repeat locations—i.e. every room in Jana’s Hyde Park mansion.

How have the reviews been?

Amazing so far. Here are two examples. “Porcelain Doll is Joe Cosentino at his finest. We are drawn back to the fashions and attitudes of the 1980’s in a character-driven story full of intrigue and passion.” Kirsty Vizard, Divine Magazine

“Beautifully written and intensely detailed, Porcelain Doll is one not to be missed. Flirtatiously decadent with a strong moral undertone, set in a decade of extraordinary social change this is a story of its period that is as poignant today as it was then. Joe Cosentino controlled the emotions that the book encouraged with a deft but delicate touch. Suspenseful and mysterious, Porcelain Doll is a masterful creation, one that was impossible not to be affected by.” Carol Fenton, BooksLaidBare Reviews

In DRAMA QUEEN theatre college professors are dropping like stage curtains. With the inept local detectives, it is up to Directing professor, Nicky Abbondanza to use his theatre skills (including playing other people) to solve the murders, while he directs a murder mystery onstage. Complicating matters is Nicky’s intense crush on Assistant Professor of Acting, handsome Noah Oliver, the prime suspect in the murder. In DRAMA MUSCLE Nicky and Noah have to use their theatre skills to find out why musclemen are dropping like weights in the Physical Education department while Nicky directs the Student Bodybuilding Competition. In DRAMA CRUISE (not released yet), Nicky and Noah go on a cruise to Alaska, and discover why college theatre professors are going overboard like lifeboats while Nicky directs a murder mystery dinner theatre show onboard ship.

Have you written other books besides mysteries?

Yes. My MM romance novellas are published by Dreamspinner Press. They are AN INFATUATION, A SHOOTING STAR, A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, and THE NAKED PRINCE AND OTHER TALES FROM FAIRYLAND. I also have my novels set in a New Jersey beach resort called Cozzi Cove. Though I hide under a beach umbrella due to my fair skin, I love the beach! Nine Star Press is the publisher of COZZI COVE: BOUNCING BACK and COZZI COVE: MOVING FORARD (not yet released).

What are you writing now?

Ragdoll, the next Jana Lane mystery, where Jana stars in a TV murder mystery series. You guessed it! Life imitates art yet again.

How do you deal with bad reviews?

Most of my reviews and reader response have been incredibly positive, which fuel my writing. What a gift it is for a reader to post a positive review on Amazon or Goodreads, relating how something I’ve written has moved them, made them laugh, made them cry, think about something new, or changed their life. I can’t think of anything better. As for the few bad reviews, I don’t read them. As my mother always told me, if you don’t have something nice to say about somebody, don’t say anything. I can’t imagine why anyone would continue reading a book after chapter one if he/she doesn’t like it. Just put it down and read something else. Why attack a book someone has poured his/her blood, sweat, and tears into? As the saying goes, just say no.

Who is your ideal reader of your books?

My ideal reader is a lover of mystery, romance, and Hollywood. Someone who craves being swept away by a story and becoming part of the novel. My reader loves clues, suspects, and plotlines that zigzag with numerous surprises leading to a shocking yet totally justified conclusion. Finally, my reader relishes in beautiful, lush locations and captivating characters as she/he enters the portal of my book.

How can your readers contact you?

3_18 porcelain dollIs art imitating life in 1982? Jana Lane, ex-child star, is doing a comeback film about murder. When a crew member is killed on the set, it looks like Jana could be next. Thickening the plot is Jana’s breathtakingly handsome and muscular leading man, Jason Apollo, whose boyish, southern charms have aroused Jana’s interest on screen and off. Will Jana and Jason stop the murderer before the final reel, or end up on the cutting room floor in this fast-paced whodunit with a shocking ending?

Enjoy an excerpt:

As Jana sat waiting for Jack to call for action, she looked up at Jason’s encouraging face. She again was taken aback by his incredible beauty.

Reverend Charlton and Gloria reentered the study.

Jack called for quiet and action. Jana and Jason played the scene, where the detective notifies her of her husband’s death. Jason delivered his lines with warmth, vulnerability, and obvious affection for Jana. In turn, Jana listened then reacted with deep emotions, conveying shock, loss, fear, and hysteria while being comforted by the man she trusted. Jana clutched onto Jason with such force, her fingernail accidently tore a hole in his jacket.

“Cut!” Jack hollered.

While the wardrobe woman repaired Jason’s jacket, Jana noticed Reverend Charlton step out of the study again, this time with Ryan O’Halloran.

After the two men returned, and the jacket was mended, Jack called for slate and action for take two. Jana and Jason did the scene two more times. Each take was more realistic and heart-wrenching than the next, and each appeared as if it were the first time Jana was given the sad news.

After the third take, Jack shouted, “Cut! It’s a wrap. Ryan, let’s move on to the next location.”

Jana wiped the tears from her cheeks.

Jason placed his hand on the side of her face. “You’re amazing.”

“You’re not so bad yourself, partner.”

“You make me better,” he said with adoration in his true-blue eyes.

They shared a smile as again people hurried around the room like ants after a picnic.

Suddenly, Jana heard a loud crash followed by a scream. Leaping from her chair, she followed the horrified gazes of the others in the room to Ryan O’Halloran lying motionless on the floor with a Fresnel tungsten shuttered light next to his head, and blood dripping from his scalp onto the hardwood floor.

Texas Montgomery Mavericks, Book 7

Lydia Henson’s four-year-long engagement to Jason Montgomery is about to end in a Texas wedding everyone is anticipating. She’s come to accept Jason doesn’t want children. She can live without children. She can’t live without the man she loves.

Everything he swore he didn’t want seems as natural as breathing. But just as he gathers the courage to grab for the golden ring, another unexpected twist threatens to tarnish what could have been a shining future.

Warning: Sticky fingers and dirty diapers can change a couple forever.

This book was by far my favorite on this series, and let me say that I have loved them all.

This is a sexy romance about two people in love and perfectly willing to make sacrifices for each other, but what happens when tragedy changes their lives forever. Jason is the last of the Montgomery Mavericks to tie the knot but he’s been hiding a big secret from everyone, including the woman he loves. Lydia’s family is rocked by tragedy on the eve of her wedding and leaving her with custody of her sister’s three small children. Now Jason’s lies come back on him and threatens to tear them apart.

As usual, this book was really well written and realistic. Lydia had a hard time being an instant mother to three little ones. She was frustrated and felt inadequate at times and also conflicted about her relationship with Jason. It seemed that he was too good at convincing everybody that he had zero interest in ever being a father. It wasn’t that way at all but that lie nearly cost him the one thing he wanted more than anything. This story was certainly loaded with drama and angst and the characters were wonderful. Also, I loved the special twist and the epilogue was beautiful.

This was the final book in the Montgomery Mavericks series and I absolutely hate to see it end. I love the author’s writing and getting to know all the wonderful characters and watching their drama play out toward so many happy endings. Lastly, I enjoyed every page of this book and look forward to the next book from Cynthia D’Alba since reading this series has definitely made me a fan for life.

While this book mostly focused on Peter and Christian and the progression of their relationship, I enjoyed the quick look-in’s we got to see of Damon and Toby too. The earlier books in this series centered on Damon and Toby’s relationship so it was fun to see some resolution of those plots happen. That said, this book really does show a lot of progress and deepening of Peter and Christian. I’ve loved this couple (Christian in particular) as complex characters in the earlier books and was thrilled to really dig deeper into their stories.

This is book five in the series. I feel it would be best if readers had read at least a few of the previous stories – but I have to admit the author does a great job of writing this book as a self-contained story. I feel readers could read this without any of the previous ones and the reader will still enjoy a great, emotional BDSM story. But the story is much richer, more complex and deeper having read the previous installments. I feel the experience is far greater having come the full journey.

I loved reading both Peter and Christian, as well as Damon and Toby’s stories continue. I’ve grown really attached to these characters and hope there are more books coming down the line. Hot and sweet, filled with interesting, multi-layered characters this is an awesome book and one I know I will reread many times to come. Recommended.

From the moment the Nelson brothers took a lonely young girl from the wrong side of the tracks under their wing, Rachel Andrews loved them both with all her heart. But it was James who won her hand.

As time runs short before Kyle ships out again, the desire Kyle and Rachel have suppressed breaks free in a fiery rush. Tempting her to reveal a secret that could give him a reason to stay or burn their love to ash.

“Warning: Contains a hot military man who will steal your panties as well as your heart.”

This was such a great book. It’s an incredibly sweet, emotional romance that I couldn’t put down.

This book had a lot of conflict in the plot. The heroine Rachel was in love with two brothers, James and Kyle. But it was James who made the first move so Rachel became engaged to the wrong brother while Kyle stepped aside and let his brother claim the woman he loved. Then an argument led to one passionate moment and a huge secret between Rachel and Kyle. Now five years later Kyle is back home from the military and Rachel is a widow. The nearly tangible attraction is there but the weight of guilt still lies between them. The beauty of this plot is that although mistakes were made and hearts were broken there wasn’t any clear betrayal from anyone. That’s why it worked out so well.

His Reason To Stay is the first book that I’ve read in this series but it definitely won’t be the last. It’s a sweet story that was fast paced but beautifully written. Kyle and Rachel were wonderful characters who had always loved each other but made some wrong choices. They were both vulnerable and I was easily pulled into the tension of how Kyle would react when the Rachel’s secret was revealed. I might just add that Rachel’s little girl, Ava, actually stole the show in this book. Her character was absolutely adorable and really livened up the story.

This book can be read as a stand alone for anyone, like myself, who hasn’t read the series. There’s really not much else for me to say except that I really loved it and intend to read the rest of the series as soon as possible.

After a painful divorce, a determined Olivia Fletcher returns to her hometown of King’s Bluff, Wyoming, to rebuild her life. She finds a public relations job at a new, exclusive lodge. But the owners of the lodge—and the on-site BDSM club—are powerful Dominants who are as fascinating as they are unsettling.

Alex and Kane MacKenzie share everything from their international construction business to their home. The two Doms had hoped to find a woman to share as well, but Alex’s past has taught the remote alpha that women are incapable of caring for anyone but themselves. To his surprise, their new PR consultant shows a loyalty that pulls at his heart. Kane, the rebel, is committed to learning the spirited redhead’s dreams and fears. When they discover her suppressed interest in BDSM, the former SEALs set out to convince Olivia that surrendering to them doesn’t mean losing her identity.

Kiss a stranger in a dimly lit hallway and your wildest dreams will come true. Sounds like a cheesy fortune cookie line but it’s exactly what put Olivia Fletcher on Kane McKenzie’s radar. That kiss though. Ms. Archer knows how to pour so much into the art of describing a kiss. Beautiful! The hard part is going to be getting his brother on the same page. I could tell from my first meeting with Alex that he was going to be a hard nut to crack but so much fun to watch.

Speaking of Alex, Olivia’s first meeting with him was fraught with tension of a whole different dimension. So much for first impressions but it was such a clever set up since Olivia was meeting him for the first time to interview for a job. I felt bad for her but was totally looking forward to the crow he’d be eating once he had time to cool down. On the flip side, Olivia is a worrier. Big time! I liked how Alex and Kane help her work through her issues and bring out the fire in Red (adorable nickname Alex gives her).

That’s one of the reasons I really like the McKenzie men. They appear to be polar opposites, and are different in many ways but, then they begin to focus on Olivia and in that they are single minded and intense. This trio has great chemistry when they all come together or even when it’s just Olivia plus one.

Readers who like clearly defined bad guys are gonna love this one. Seriously, I couldn’t decide who I loved to hate more but Claudette, the guys’ mom, would probably win the prize. She defines cunning, conniving and manipulative. Evil draws evil and so I wasn’t surprised to see who she was ultimately linked to but it made the ending so much sweeter. Tasha, for her treachery and shallowness, runs a close second. Or maybe the ex-fiance, Caroline. Yeah, Alex has plenty of reasons to not trust women in general. Olivia had her work cut out with teaching him different.

There’s a lot going on in this novel. Some issues are simple annoyances and others are down right evil. I had to read closely to see how it all intertwined and catch all the players. As the blurb alludes to a part of the plot has to deal with Alex’s fear of betrayal. That part both broke my heart and yet, I had to love how the author handled it. It felt real, rather than a convenient way to move the characters along.

Word to readers who choose this for it’s BDSM elements. These guys are not soft-core BDSM. They are serious about their kink and the woman who wins them has to be just as much.

I love every opportunity to revisit King’s Bluff and catch up with the Chloe, Reagan and her friends and the men, oh yeah, the men. Nice! Oh and Olivia’s mom, gotta love her and getting to know her back story was actually pretty cool because of the way it tied into the main plot of the book. Also, I can’t wait to read Caleb and Purdy’s story and it looks like their third will be resident Dom Eli. He sounds yummy and can definitely handle the spitfire little music teacher.

Fantastic addition to the King’s Bluff series. The stories are all stand alone and fully satisfying reads. If you haven’t been to Wyoming, they grow they hot and dominate out in the wild. Now is the perfect time to go exploring!

Faye Longchamp-Mantooth has dug herself a deep hole and she can’t make her way out of it. Joe Wolf Mantooth has never felt so alone, despite living in his house with the wife he loves, the son he adores, and the father who hasn’t got around to telling him how long he’s been out of prison or what he did to get sent there. When one of their close friends is brutally murdered, Joe begins to wonder whether Faye will ever be herself again, and he knows he needs to help her. As crimes against women rock Micco County, one after another, he realizes that Faye is in danger from both her inner demons and an outside evil. And all the while, the danger snakes further into their lives, threatening the people they love, the very ground beneath their feet, and even their home and the island where it stands. No man is an island, and no woman. Faye and Joe must break open the isolation that grips them, or they will lose everything.

Ms. Evans adds a bit of history to her books, writing about often forgotten history trivia that adds an interesting aspect to the tale she’s telling. She mixes past and present and ties it up with a big bow to make it all fit together.

Faye has a husband, a daughter and a son. Her father-in-law is staying with them currently. She has plenty of reason to live if she can just get out of her funk. Joe is trying to be patient but it bothers him.

With inspectors checking out the fuel (which turns out to be kerosene), she meets with a man who searching his ancestors. He uses her great grandmother’s name in connection with a soldier who never came home from the war even though he was married. He thinks she was keeping him captive. She knows that couldn’t be true, but what was the truth?

When the local marina’s diner owner is shot and killed, Faye has something else to interest her. She doesn’t realize how close and personal that death is going to become to her.

My favorite part is watching Faye trying to figure out why the soldier would be there at all and where he might have lived. When she finds arsenic, it’s a clue. But a clue to what?

This is a very good read with exciting parts, some trauma, and family secrets being unearthed. It’s a fascinating read that keeps you glued to the pages. I’m ready to read the next in this series.

How much would you risk to help a stranger?

I was impressed with how much attention the author paid to the setting and backstory. The world building was so well done that this felt like the introductory chapter of a book. It was simply that complex and vivid in many small but important ways that are hard to condense into a review. Everything from the slang the characters used to the descriptions of the harsh land they lived on made me feel like I’d truly stepped into another world. This isn’t to say that this doesn’t work as a short story. It worked beautifully, in fact. I just didn’t want it to end!

The chemistry between Kara and Sarit never quite felt right to me. I liked them both quite a bit as individuals and thought they would be great friends. Their personalities were so different, though, that I had trouble imagining them in a romantic relationship. I would have liked to see a few more examples of them interacting in non-platonic ways before the final scene. The line between friendship and love can be a fuzzy one sometimes. All these characters needed was a nudge in the right direction. Having that extra information would have earned this tale a much higher rating as I loved everything else about it.

Kara was incredibly likeable. The plot didn’t waste any time describing all of the difficult things she’d lived through in her short life so far. Any one of them could be enough to make someone give up on helping other people, so her empathy caught my attention right away. Seeing how kind and sensitive she was to someone she didn’t know only made me want to get to know her better.

Stinger should be read by fans of science fiction and romance alike. It blended these two genres together wonderfully.
