Former Marine Captain Brett Brennan loves a good practical joke—when he’s the prankster not the prankee. Unfortunately, his twin brother has learned a lesson or two from the master and springs Operation Payback on him, thrusting Brett into a fake engagement to his former corporal, Trisha Jennings, in front of her matchmaking, District Attorney father.

Relationships are so not his thing, but realizing Trisha is struggling to come to terms with a horrific incident from their recent deployment, Brett takes matters into his own hands, using their fake relationship to keep her on his family’s resort ranch, the perfect place for her to find peace and heal. After all, he would never let one of his own men down.

Except, Trisha is no longer a corporal under his command. Out of uniform, she is all woman, and his unexpected attraction to her soon has him forgetting their prank relationship is only for show. Who knew payback could be so sweet?

Proximity, mutual need, and a little white lie is one explanation for the attraction between Brett and Trisha, off the charts chemistry that had to be banked while they served together is another. After reading this novel, I’m firmly in the chemistry corner. Such a fun read and yet it had a poignant underlying story.

One thing that stood out for me about this story is that I didn’t want to stop reading to write the review. Normally, I’ll stop and write parts of the review as I’m reading but this one held my attention so well, I actually had to force myself to pull away at certain moments and write down my thoughts. The story flows quite smoothly and I so enjoyed watching Brett and Trisha fight their attraction, only to lose over and over again. They meant well but, it’s practically impossible to fight what two hearts want.

Both Trisha and Brett are former Marines who served their country honorably. That earned them lots of cred from the beginning. Then I started learning about what exactly Trisha did while serving and how it’s affected her since separating. I wanted her to not only find what she needed to heal at Royal Pines but it was just one more reason to cheer for her HEA with Brett.

That Brett, he’s a charmer and a stinker. The primary plot of this story is based on a prank retaliation. The first book in this series, Cowboy Fiance, details how Brett pranked his twin brother. Cowboy Payback is simply that, Finn strikes backs…and how! I haven’t read the first book but I will and very soon.

There’s another story in there for Trisha’s brother, Liam. He just needs to meet the right woman or maybe he’s already met her if the stilted greeting between him and the Activity Director for Royal Pines is any indication. That’s going to be a good book!

Readers who want a fulfilling romance that meshes two incredibly sexy character types, cowboys and military, will gobble this series up. It’s one I plan to follow as well as checking out Ms. Michaels backlist. If her other stories are as well written, with characters that have me falling in love right along side them, then that’s an author I can follow.

What if you meet your true love at the wrong time in his life? What if fate gives you both a second chance?

I fell in love with these two from the first couple of chapters. Their story is sweet and yet life has a way of complicating things. This story could have gone a whole different direction if the tragedy hadn’t occurred. But it does and it felt real.

I was a little concerned about witnessing the tragedy that the blurb alludes to. The author gives the readers a chance to get to know all the parties involved and it really made it that much more personal when it happened. Still, I could see why she did it that way. I needed to see how carefree Andrew, his brother Josh, and Tanner were before to appreciate how they changed in the ten years in between. Also, it was nice to see Andrew and Tanner as friends, only just becoming aware of each other before they reunite. That conversation and the scenes before Tanner leaves on the trip, though. Tissue alert!

I felt for Andrew. Sure he was already twenty-one when he becomes responsible for his kid brother but the amount stress and the mounting “what if’s?” are enough to break just about anyone. I know he hurt Tanner initially and I was hoping that their reunion would be one where Tanner came to understand and forgive him. Tanner grows up a lot when he hits the road. I liked the direction he took his life and how it molded him from a young adult to a man.

The first half of the story is from Andrew’s POV but it’s not a first person POV. I was glad. The second half picked up from Tanner’s POV before switching back to Andrew. It’s very defined and wasn’t an issue in knowing who was speaking. No head hopping involved. The story runs a little long in some places or maybe I was just so anxious to get them to their HEA that parts simply felt unnecessary. It’s one of those stories I’d read again to be sure I didn’t miss important stuff.

The way Ms. Starr describes Tanner’s nervousness about seeing Andrew after ten years, it was so detailed, I was nervous right along with him. I don’t want to give away too much but I’ll say it wasn’t the homecoming Tanner expected but that doesn’t mean it was bad, either.

There’s a lovely little tease at the end of this story that totally has me hooked and wanting to see what happens in the next book. Surely, there’ll be a next book. There actually is a book prior to this one, Charlie’s Hero, but I didn’t realize it until little details about Josh and Charlie started fitting together.

Readers who want a whole heart true romance should pick up this book. Andrew and Tanner both are full of personality and once they’re both off the leash to love each other, it’s just beautiful to watch. Well worth the read and an easy recommend.

I love a good mystery. I cut my teeth on Agatha Christie novels when I was in junior high, so when I saw this book up for grabs, I nabbed it.

The premise of Funeral Hotdish is exciting. There’s possible murder, overdoses, family drama… oh and a mob situation to boot. With all of that in the plot, the story kept my attention. I wanted to know how everything would shake out. I mean, Sammy Gravano and John Gotti in a book? Yeah, this has to be a winner.

Well…kind of a winner. While the book was good and the plot had more twists and turns than a mountain road, I had a few issues.  Ms. Bommersbach has a definitive writing style and while she’s descriptive, the author tends to head hop a bit. I had to go back an reread to make sure I knew whose point of view I was in a few times. Some readers might not be bothered by this. Unfortunately, I was. Another thing I had a tick of trouble with were the descriptive parts. Now don’t get me wrong. I felt like I was right there with Joya sorting out this mystery. I did. But there were times the story felt more like informational dumps, rather than pulling me in with description.

Now I know it sounds like I wasn’t thrilled. Not so. There is a thread of family and heartbreak that runs through this tale and I’m glad it did. It made me more emotionally involved with the story. The teen and boyfriend who takes the ecstasy…that thread hit close to home because the time the story is set (the late 1990s) was a formative time for me. I could see my friends in the characters of Amber and Johnny. So kudos to Ms. Bommersbach for reeling me in that way.

If you want a book that’s got twists and turns to boot, has characters you won’t forget and heart, then this might be the story for you.

Chased by a man who believes Christiana is his, ordered not to start a war with France, and a sister who has her own thoughts on the way Neil should behave and you have a book full of….well, full of a bit of everything.

I really enjoyed this book. At first it seemed the story would be serious due to the beginning where Christiana’s husband loses his head, but once the two main characters meet, the conflict between them is intense but at times quite humorous. When Neil’s sister is added to the mix the levity increases. The book is not exactly lighthearted but definitely entrancing. It has serious moments, lots of tension in the right places and humor in other places. A good read and well written with strong characters.

Ben Freitag is frazzled; he’s barely slept in weeks. After delivering beautiful, healthy twin boys, his wife, Chloe returned home diagnosed with a severe case of postpartum depression. Listless and lethargic, she seems to want nothing to do with them or Ben, who is running low on everything: love, energy, patience and time off from work. So when Chloe’s estranged great-grandmother, the almost mythical, Baba Fête, offers her assistance Ben welcomes her.

The seemingly ageless and vivacious Baba whooshes in, effortlessly managing the household and convinces Ben to go back to work; she will take care of the house and his family. Now Ben can get some sleep and return to some sense of normality.

Overwhelmed by Baba and lured back into the warm rhythm of work, Ben doesn’t notice what’s happening; something had invaded Ben’s home and is eating his family away—literally.

Every family has its share of quirky relatives and old rivalries. What the Freitag’s are dealing with, though, goes far beyond anything you could possibly imagine.

The character building in this tale was excellent. I got to know Ben’s personality so quickly and thoroughly that it only took me a few scenes to notice when he suddenly wasn’t acting like himself. This is a difficult thing to pull off in a short story. The fact that the author was able to do it so early on in the plot makes me eager to check out everything else they’ve written. I was really impressed, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

This is an extremely minor criticism, but I would have liked to see the narrator spend a little more time explaining what Ben and his family knew about Baba Fête before she arrived at their home. There were a few things about her relationship with them that I found slightly odd because of how quickly Ben glossed over what should have been early warning signs that something was wrong. This could have easily been explained with a little more attention paid to her origins and what she was capable of doing. Had it been explained fully, I would have given this book a perfect rating as I loved everything else about it!

Anticipating what scary things could happen next is a big part of why I like the horror genre so much. The pacing in this book gave me plenty of opportunities to wonder what Baba Fête was up to and why so many of the people around her were suddenly getting sick. I couldn’t wait to find out what was happening, but I was also glad that the author revealed it all so leisurely. That pacing style worked perfectly for the plot and the characters.

Baba Fête is a must read for anyone who enjoys being frightened as much as I do.

There is quite a serious aspect to this book with only a few lighthearted moments. The pair meet many different groups of people, people they didn’t know existed, and on the way a mother gives them her baby, then promptly commits suicide. The two have now become three – well, two and a half – but they continue their journey.

Max sounds like a hunk of a man while at first Taylor is a wimp, but she soon comes out of her shell and the two work well together. The concept of the country is a little confusing at first but basically it’s science in the North with normal in the South. Taylor and Max have no idea what the rest of the country or the world is like.

A reasonably good read but this is not a “can’t put down book”. I found I had to take a breather for a few days, then get back into it again as I needed to assimilate what I’d read before I carried on to the next part.

Despite being the final book in Sandy Lender’s fantasy trilogy (which began with Choices Meant for Kings and Choices Meant for Gods, this book stands alone fairly well. While I’m sure that reading the books in order would greatly add to the enjoyment of the story, just because the reader would be more aware of the history and undercurrents of the relationships between the characters, I found the book’s action easy to pick up and follow without being familiar with the other books.

My favorite character is Amanda Chariss Derdriu, The Protector of The Master with the master being the god of Onweald. At the beginning of this book, Chariss has been captured by Jamieson Drake, an evil sorcerer who wants her for his own, and by Juliette, a goddess/dragon-shifter, who wants to rule Onweald.

Because of the sheer volume of characters in this fantasy with many entwining relationships (as an example, Nigel Taiman, Chariss’ fiancé, is also the son of Juliette who wants to destroy the Master) I was thrilled to see (and actually read first before even starting page one) a list of characters (as well as a pronunciation guide) and a map of the world, which helps a lot in keeping everyone straight! I referred back to it often, especially at the start when I wanted to make sure I knew who was who.

Ms. Lender supplies us with non-stop action from the very beginning, and happily Chariss is not a helpless captive who sits back and waits for her man to rescue her. She is always looking for a way to save herself and get back to her job of protecting the Master. She’s a great, kick butt heroine that I enjoyed. And, the entire story is very exciting. The author’s writing style is smooth and non-intrusive but very clear and descriptive. I never felt as if reading the book was a chore. Instead it was more like a movie running through my brain. The best kind of reading!

I fully intend on going back and reading the other two books in the trilogy, then rereading this book so I can get an overview of the entire world and see all the little things I likely missed from not knowing these characters as well as I would have liked. Well done and recommended to fantasy fans.

Riona is by no means a shrinking violet, but she is also no match for big Hugh McCallum. They don’t meet in a drawing room, but in her bedroom. Their discussion is neither polite nor genteel…

In fact, we readers sympathize with Riona’s fear and desperation. This is not one of those stories where a pre-made match goes awry – but where a woman must tackle life with her own courage and decisiveness. There is indeed a “mistake’ but eventually we know putting it right will end up costing both of them.

The Wrong Bride is unexpectedly unpredictable, with strong characters that evoke some real emotion. The ‘wretched Highlander’ is and is not what Riona fears. There are quite a number of characters actually, (not all human, as I loved little Hamish-the-terrier, and thought the dog a nice touch.) Though there are quite a number of human characters, the book is beautifully written, so there never seems a point where the author is juggling characters in a confusing way.

Ms. Callen offers us a wonderful historic context as the lifestyles and backdrop are simply perfect: both in giving a picture of the times and in contributing to the story-line.

Witty, fun and ultimately satisfying,  The Wrong Bride is everything a historical romance fan expects.

Poor Quinn, he was determined to be a very grouchy patient, Their first face to face meeting is hilarious! I wasn’t sure who was more surprised at how much damage could be done in such a short time. One thing that I found to be very refreshing about this story was that no one was in denial. Sure Quinn had only been out for a couple of years but it was nice that his anxiety about coming out to his friends and family wasn’t the focus of this story since it’s a short. That left more time to simply develop the relationship between him and Spencer and it could be at a more natural pace rather than rushing it.

I purposefully set out to find a good rom-com when I picked this book. It fulfilled my expectations to a tee. How could I not love Quinn’s family? They are Cuban to perfection and exactly the push Quinn needed to see Spencer as more than a friend. It’s not all fun and giggles, though. Quinn has the friend who can barely be called that. I won’t say which one but I would cheerfully pour some lemon juice on him if he had a paper cut.

This is an easy recommend for anyone who enjoys a lighthearted MM short, though I would have been happy for it to have been twice as long. I’ll be watching this author for future books to see if she continues with this family or maybe Quinn’s friends in other books.

Now Taylor is heading back home for a wedding and since his mother is threatening to set him up if he comes alone, he needs a date. Asking Kevin to be his pretend boyfriend sounds like a perfect solution.

What happens when they arrive in Harrington Hills and learn to see each other in a different light? With their relationship changing, can they drop the act and realize that what they have is real?

When a little lie turns into a big reality it can be overwhelming in more ways than one.

I love a good “fake date” story. I know going in that there’s going to be uncomfortable moments, funny situations, expected PDA and then that dawning realization on one or both parts. This is a fun little twist since it’s a shifter story. Their sense of smell is so keen that deception isn’t easy. The fun part of this story is that it’s only deception from one of the men and then only because he’s a little slow. But sweet, so he’s forgiven.

I love little intimate gestures in romance books. Touching. Snuggling. Kissing, of course. But with wolves there’s scent marking. Oh man! When Taylor and Kevin exchange shirts so they can mingle their smells and then Taylor focuses on Kevin’s smell to calm his nerves, I was totally hooked! I think what made it all the more special is that he didn’t realize at the time the significance of that comforting/home feeling he felt around Kevin. It was a true light bulb moment for sure when he did.

Really only one minor-ish issue. When people speak to each other they don’t generally say stuff like “I will” they say “I’ll”. I mentally kept changing some words, while in dialogue, to the contractions more commonly used. Not a story killer. I just tend to notice the stutter in tempo. Also, there’s this whole backstory about Taylor’s parents. The death of his father and grandparents. How his mothers got together. This is the first in the series so, depending on who stars in the next book (s), maybe we’ll find out more about the Harrington Pack. Then the Beta comes and talks to Kevin and some of it started to fall in to place. I still had questions but, she shed some light on a few question marks.

This is a quick read with some fun, lighthearted moments but, there’s some intensity here as well. Kevin’s lone wolf had to work through his issues and Taylor had to recognize what his wolf knew all along. Home comes in many forms. I enjoyed this short and look forward to seeing who comes next in the Harrington Hills series.
