Reporter Misty Ramon is in Lucky, Texas to write about the uniqueness of the town for her newspaper column. However, ever since she’s arrived, writer’s block has plagued her. Needing to do a bit of research, she comes up with a plan to seduce her neighbors—Fire Chief Brandon Reed, EMT Easton Cannon, and Deputy Rowdy Ferguson—into showing her the ways of the infamous bondage and menage town.

Brandon, Rowdy, and Easton are three foster brothers that grew up in the system and eventually made it to Lucky to escape the judgmental outside world. They share lovers and love bondage but they haven’t found a woman that has suited them for the long term. While Easton and Brandon instantly hit it off with Misty, Rowdy has his reserves. Trust doesn’t come easy to those that have been battered and bruised, but the sexy reporter has a way of making the men she wants come around. The three men propose a sexual adventure that knows no bounds, but the last thing Misty ever expected was to have feelings for them.

Lucky, Texas is a magical place where love lurks around every corner. Unsuspecting bystanders may be tied up and spanked until they learn that love is what Lucky is truly about.

Misty has been in Lucky, Texas for two weeks now. She’s writing a series of articles in her newspaper column, focusing on how Lucky as a town caters to the bondage and ménage lifestyles. Aside from a few creepy emails, there has been an overwhelmingly positive response from her readers. Misty is also seriously attracted to her neighbors across the street. Brandon and his foster brothers have more than caught her attention. Can they make things work between them?

What on earth should a girl do? Brandon, the fire Chief, Easton, the only EMT in Texas and Rowdy, the deputy Sherriff are foster brothers and more than interested in a ménage. How could anyone possibly say no to that? Misty sure can’t and I don’t blame her one bit. I found this to be a mostly character-driven story. There’s not a lot of plot outside the ménage coming together and working. I did enjoy how each of the men – but Rowdy in particular – were quite complicated, deep characters. I feel the author did a great job of making the dynamics between the brothers interesting and fun, but they still each had their own personality and flaws.

There were clearly lures for other books scattered throughout the story – but I found this could easily be read as a stand-alone novel. I didn’t need any backstory on the town or Misty’s friend and the other stories I presume have been written in the series. I found the sex to be smoking hot and deliciously explicit. I also really enjoyed how it wasn’t just the three men with Misty. They each had alone time with the other and this helped me understand their connections and strengthened their relationship together in my eyes. The BDSM was quite light – mostly a bit of spanking/flogging, toys and restraints. There was nothing I found extreme or overly hard-core and I feel most readers used to erotic romance should find it tasteful and hot.

Readers interested in a ménage story with some hot sex and a little bit of BDSM should find this a fun, entertaining read that ticks all the boxes.

Reeling from the recent Project Powering battle with the evil Nexus Group, were-lynx and veterinarian Lara Monroe struggles with thwarting the group’s plans to eliminate her colony while dealing with her own traumatic past. A formidable were-lynx and a physician, Booker has his hands full helping patients who were seriously injured in the battle. But nothing can repair his soul, broken from the loss of his wife and the PTSD from his service in Afghanistan . . . or can it? Now that his good friend Lara is standing by him in his emotional struggles, he’s finding there is more to their connection than he realized. But dare he open his heart?

In the epic conclusion of the Fierce Hearts series, the colony takes its biggest risk of all to shut down the Nexus Group forever – will Lara and Booker survive to take their second chance at love?

This story starts off with immediate tension. Our heroine, Lara, is in danger right off that bat. She’s attacked and does her best to protect herself (can I just say how much I love a kick-butt heroine?) but is simply overwhelmed. Thankfully, Booker is nearby to help.

Some time ago, I read another book in this series (Secrets), so have some insight into the backstory and world-building here. Still, I clearly missed something in between the books, so the martial law that’s been imposed on the town was unexpected. The tension due to this conflict is almost unbearable at times. Everyone is tip-toeing around and worried about a million different things. And it’s all building to the crescendo at the end…

Author Lynn Crandall has a wonderful way with words and description. She makes the scenes and characters come to life in her books, and this one was no exception. The shifters, the setting, the soldiers are all described clearly but not to the point where my eyes glazed over. She also balances the romance with the suspense nicely, and I’d say this book is split right down the middle, so should appeal to both romance readers and those who prefer suspense.

The relationship between Lara and Booker was incredibly sweet… friends first and so much affection and trust from the start. They have their share of bumps, but I never doubted they’d make it through.

I do wish I’d read all the books in order. While the author does a good job catching readers up who aren’t entirely familiar with the series, I still feel that I missed things and that my experience with the book would have been much richer if I’d read them all. With the author’s writing skill and the interesting plot line, I’m sure I’d have been completely engaged in them all and am comfortable recommending this series to lovers of paranormal romance and suspense.

Griffin Stone knows the stats. Sons of abusers become abusers. This is his single fear.

Unable to persuade his mother to leave and wrestling with his resentment towards her for staying, Griffin volunteers at Holly’s House, a safe haven for abused women. Through sculpture, Griffin gives these women pieces of themselves they’ve long forgotten. Holly’s House is the only place where Griffin finds peace and purpose.

Until he meets Frankie Moore.

Frankie is an aspiring photographer, finding beauty in things most people miss, including Griffin. Griffin is attracted to her free-spirited, sassy attitude but fears Frankie will trigger the most intense part of him, the one he must keep buried.

Frankie’s got to get her act together. Her anything-goes behavior is leading nowhere fast. She’s hopeful that her latest hobby will be a building block for the future. But when a stranger appears on the other end of her camera, looking as complex as he is handsome, Frankie thinks this might be just the change she needs.

This story shook me to the core. It is so emotional and so layered. It is so much more than just another New adult novel.

Shatterproof starts slow but once it gets its momentum is absolutely amazing. Griffin Stone and Frankie Moore met at the shelter for battered women where Frankie lives after she went homeless and where Griffin is helping battered women by doing the sculptures for them. At first Griffin thinks that Frankie is also a victim of abuse, but when she tells him a truth (which is that she was never a victim, but almost become one) he is already too much into her to stop their relationship.

Griffin is a son of abuse and his mother never left his abusive father. He thinks that he will also become abusive and that’s why he doesn’t want a serious relationship. Frankie is a college graduate and she is “jump first, think later” kind of person. She knows that she would like to become a professional photographer, but does not pursue this goal very diligently. Their worlds, but especially Griffin’s, are completely changed when they meet and fall in love,.

Although Frankie is not sure what to do with her life, she is strong girl and she is the one who helps Griffin to cast away his demons. She does not take any stupidity from him and she pushes him out of his comfort zone. Griffin is a dark and complex character. At the beginning of the story he is full of rage. He resents his father and has strong mixed feelings about his mother.

The topic of Shatterproof goes beyond a love story. The author deals with issue of domestic violence, children who are witnessing it and the question why victims stay in abusive relationship. But it also demystifies the idea that domestic violence is related to poverty or particular social status, because Griffin parents are neither poor nor his father is alcoholic.

Shatterproof is a great story written from a dual POV that deals realistically with the issue of domestic violence. Readers should be warned that the story contains scenes of violence without which the story would not be authentic. So if one does not have problem with it, read this story, it is truly magnificent.

Men of S.W.A.T., Book 2

Just days away from finishing her temporary assignment in Haven and returning to her safe, lonely life in Columbus, office efficiency expert Emma Taylor toys with a deliciously sexy idea.

According to local rumor, decorated SWAT officer Jay Barnes is a dynamo in bed. Maybe he’s the man to unleash her inner wild woman—and maybe, finally, show her what the “big O” is all about.

From the moment Emma volunteers to play hostage for a S.W.A.T. training exercise, Jay itches to loosen her conservative bun and remove her uptight blouse. But while he’s thinking “forever”, she’s thinking “forget it”. He’ll have to come up with a whole new set of moves to convince her this bad boy is ready to settle down.

Warning: Contains slippery curves, dangerous fantasies and handsome men with copious amounts of…equipment.

Be careful what you wish for, he may just want the same thing…or something more.

Talk about a fantasy come true. Suspend belief for just a little while and enjoy the sensual and sexiness of a plus size woman drawing the attention of a buff SWAT man who has made an art of seduction. It’s in the way he walks, talks and commands. Emma didn’t stand a chance.

The first scene of the book made me giggle a little because it reminded me of the famous 1994 Diet Coke commercial where the ladies are all standing in the office window watching Lucky Vanous (or 2013’s Andrew Cooper for younger generations) take off his shirt. Jay doesn’t take off his shirt but the way the girls are ogling him from the window as he prepared his team was classic.

Tactical Maneuver is well named. Once Jay decides he’s more than a little in lust with Emma he realizes he only has a week to out maneuver her objections to a real relationship. He pulls out all the stops, even using some specialized equipment. That was a hot bondage scene.

Emma is complex character. She knows what she wants and shows some spunk in asking for it but at the same time she’s self conscious about her body. She wants what Jay is offering but then seems to be surprised when he follows through. Boy does he follow through. They go from “nice to meet you” to “let’s get it on” in a pretty short span of time. I got that the premise of the story was them having a week to really get to know each other and the physical was obviously going to play a big part in that.

This is a short story, so the fact that they moved so quickly didn’t kill the story for me. I could see where it might feel necessary. I wouldn’t have minded if they’d had at least one date first. Some additional time to build the tension besides the hostage simulation. I did appreciate that the author gave them a little time to talk before the “rescue” and after the first bedroom scene.

It takes a special person to handle loving a cop. I liked how the author showed growth in Emma as she went from thinking there was no way to eventually realizing that there was no way she couldn’t love him. It was romantic and really lovely to witness. Jay gives her very compelling argument for staying in Haven, staying with him in spite of her fears. Very well written piece.

Quick little read with loads of heat. Readers who love a man in uniform type story should give this one a try.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Stokes was already at the bar when Big Joe arrived. The PI was a smidgen under six foot, and not very impressive. That fact and his patient persistent nature served him well and enabled him to blend in almost anywhere. His light brown receding hairline and brown eyes framed by wire-rimmed glasses didn’t garner much interest.

An overly attentive young hostess escorted Big Joe to his usual table at the back corner of the dining room where he had an excellent view of who came and went. He had more than a few enemies. That was to be expected. He was a rich, ruthless, powerful man who was about to move JD to the top of his enemy list.

He ordered another bourbon when Stokes joined him and waved off the waiter as he returned for their lunch order. “Get on with it.”

Stokes disliked Big Joe, but he paid well and had a lot of well-heeled connections. Things were tight, so he took on the assignment to follow Cassandra Hoffman. “Not much happened after she got back from Denver. She works at her studio and spends a lot of time at home with her grandmother. Other than a couple of altercations with her ex fiancé, not much to interest you until JD showed up, but it is all in the report.”

Big Joe took the packet with the report, complete with photos, and set it aside. He would review it in private. “Get to the part about JD.”

“He must have arrived by cab. I didn’t know he was there, but stuck around a while when she got home. It was obvious that something was out of the ordinary that Friday evening. She broke the speed limit and then some. A short time later she, her grandmother, and JD went out to eat. He stayed the night, but before dawn they were on the road. I followed them with the little tracking beacon I’d placed on her vehicle when I’d first taken on the assignment. They spent the day at a horse sale with some of her friends. Early Sunday morning, the pair of them went to a local boarding stable where her purchase of the prior day was delivered. They returned home to escort her grandmother to church.”

Stokes placed a flash drive in his laptop and activated the file he wanted, and then he slid it over for Big Joe to view. “Sunday, the lights went out around eleven. I stayed for a while and figured they were in for the night. It was raining, and I was ready to pack it up when JD opened the door and seated himself on the small covered porch. Things got interesting when Miss Hoffman joined him.”

Big Joe closed the laptop. “Stokes, I want that flash drive.”

Stokes ejected it and gave it to his client who dropped it into the packet with the rest the results from his assignment.

“Go back and keep an eye on her. I will take care of JD.”

Stokes didn’t like the sounds of the implied threat, but he caught the next flight back to Cleveland.

Though still feeling bitter with Lelan for leaving him, Rhen agrees, because if there’s one thing he’s good at, it’s playing the odds.

Sometimes love doesn’t work out the first time around. Maybe a second try will make things turn out differently this time.

The dialogue often made me chuckle. I enjoyed seeing what quips the main characters would come up with next as some of them were pretty clever. My favorite scenes in this tale were the ones that showed these exchanges between Rhen and Lelan. They were a lot of fun to read and also gave me valuable glimpses into their personalities and romantic history.

Unfortunately, the chemistry between Lelan and Rhen never felt right to me. They didn’t seem to particularly like each other as friends anymore, so it was hard for me to imagine how they’d work out if they decided to get back together. While I liked them a lot as individuals and definitely wanted both of them to be happy, it was hard for me to imagine how they’d find that happiness together because of this. It would have been helpful to have more information what about their relationship was like before they broke up so I could have had a better sense of what they’d originally seen in each other.

Festivals are magical for many reasons. Not only do they provide a break from our daily routines, they give people a chance to do things and go places that they wouldn’t normally think about trying. There was a lot of magic to be found in the Vis-a-Vis festival. The food and drinks sold there sounded nearly as amazing as all of the sights and sounds the characters experienced during those four days. I really liked the scenes that described what it would be like to be there because of how many of the senses the narrator used to describe what takes place during it.

I’d recommend King of Diamonds to anyone who really enjoys romantic fantasy stories.

Janny might be bridesmaid to her best friend, but that doesn’t means he has to magically approve of the new man in her friend’s life. Escaping for some air, she meets Nik, and is sorely tempted to ditch the festivities for something far more interesting. Good sense, and loyalty to the bride, holds her back, but once duty is done Janny is more than ready to let off some steam with the handsome biker.

This is a wonderful, family-orientated story that I greatly enjoyed. Sexy and fun I couldn’t help chuckling a number of times throughout the book. The two families are huge and the author has done a wonderful job keeping all the characters as individuals and as the wedding is a major plot-point everyone has come together and there’s plenty of fun, frivolity and fireworks. I loved watching everyone clash and reunite, but central to it all Janny and Nik and the explosive chemistry they provide kept me fanning myself and eagerly turning the pages.

I was a little surprised at the hot role-play style sex scene Janny and Nik indulged in. Usually that sort of thing doesn’t work well for me but the author did an excellent job and I found it seriously steamy. I’m not sure it will be every reader’s cup of tea – Janny and Nik didn’t slip “out of character” much in their fantasy role-play so it would be quite easy for a reader to take their actions and discussions seriously. But personally I found it added to the spice of the story and I surprisingly enjoyed it a lot. There are plenty of plot twists – nothing is ever more complicated than family! – and I thought there was plenty of interesting turns to spice up the lovely story of Janny and Nik coming together.

A fun story with heaps of interesting characters and a great read I thoroughly enjoyed.

Wes loves his life traveling the Pagan festival circuit, but he loved it more when he wasn’t harangued by women a little too fond of his picture in a popular charity calendar—a calendar that mucked up his bio by stating that he’s single, but leaving out that he’s not straight.

But though Wes quickly grows fond of Nash, and the interest seems mutual, the calendar problem shows no signs of being fixed…

Being famous – even on a small scale – isn’t always all its cracked up to be.

I liked how playful the dialogue was. There were times when the plot wandered into much less lighthearted territory, so it was nice to balance those more serious scenes out with the kinds of joking around that Wes and Nash were so good at. I giggled a few times while I was reading, and that wasn’t something I was expecting to do at all.

There were character development issues. One of the main characters made a decision that completely contradicted everything I knew about his personality and code of ethics. Learning about this was so jarring that I actually briefly wondered if he’d been lying about everything else he shared with the audience as well. That was how out of character this choice was for him. It abruptly pulled me out of what was otherwise a great book. This arc might have worked better if it had been gradually explored over the course of a full length novel, but it didn’t work for me in its current form.

The various festivals that the main character talked about working at sounded so interesting. I’ve never been to a festival before, so I had to rely on the author’s descriptions of what they’re like to picture what was going on. Ms. Aaron-Hughes described them so well, though, that by the end of the storyline I could imagine what it would be like to sleep in a tent in the woods for a week and attend all kinds of lectures and special events. It sounded like fun!

The fact that Cam has been in love with him from a distance since they were teens was certainly an influence on Brad’s ability to talk him into whatever scheme but, Cam’s not stupid or blindly following. His calm, handle whatever comes his way (or Brad’s way when necessary) is part of his appeal as character. I was glad the author didn’t make Brad a macho douche who simply took advantage of a friend because he could. I liked Brad. He was a little oblivious but is was actually pretty charming.

The story moves back and forth between both Brad and Cameron’s POV but it’s always clear who’s head the reader is in because the chapter is labeled. I appreciated the fact that I did get to see the story from both angles. I got to feel Cam’s anxiety and excitement and thought processes for deciding to accept Brad’s offer. But then I also got to see the light bulb come on for Brad when he realized what he had right in front of him and what everyone else had already figured out. It was sweet. And then it got really, really sexy.

The dialogue was fun and for this to be a self-pubbed story, it was pretty clean. I wasn’t constantly stumbling over grammar issues though there were some odd extra punctuation marks. That could have been a formatting issue though. It doesn’t take away from the story itself.

This little short is so worth the read. I know that an often used trope in MM books is friends/family that have a problem with the couple. That isn’t a part of this story and I appreciated that. It’s entertaining without taking me on an emotional roller coaster. It’s perfect for someone looking for a light read, a feel good story.

Reverend Oxford Christie visits a patient in a strange nursing home, one of a number owned and operated by The Group, Inc. Its profit far exceeds that of the typical nursing home, and patients seem to disappear. The state’s system of nursing home inspections is deeply flawed to the extent that severe and continued abuse easily goes unchecked. The Group, Inc. becomes aware of Christie’s nosing around and orders are given to do whatever is necessary to stop his snooping. Ox, aware that he is being watched, is torn between the possible danger to his wife and children and the suspicion that the incredible abuse of helpless patients is even worse than what’s been observed.

Few people are more vulnerable in modern society than the ones who are sick or frail enough to require a nursing home. Who would ever take advantage of this group?

The dialogue was nicely done. A lot of the character and plot development happened as a result of certain conversations people had, so it was nice to see all of these things develop. I often felt like I was eavesdropping on other people’s conversations in a good way. It was simply that smooth and natural.

There were a few too many clues provided about what was going on at the nursing homes. I was able to figure out the mystery early on in the plot because of this. While I enjoyed the rest of the chapters, I would have had an even better time if I’d needed to put more effort into piecing everything together. Reducing the numbers of clues or making them more difficult to figure out would have made it a more challenging reading experience.

One of the things I liked the most about this story was how complex it was. Nearly all of the characters had completely understandable reasons for everything they did regardless of which side they happened to be on. Sometimes the bad guys had a surprising amount of empathy, and sometimes the good guys actually made things worse when they tried to fix things. No one was ever one hundred percent helpful or harmful. That made the plot incredibly interesting because I was able to relate to the motivations and thought processes of so many different characters at the same time.

This is part of a series, but I had no trouble at all reading it as a standalone novel. I’m now looking forward to discovering the first book.

Patients in Purgatory was full of intrigue. I’d recommend it anyone who likes mysteries that explore real-life issues.
