Lord Brandon Maxwell is a flawed man. He lives daily with the ugly memories of the death and destruction he witnessed during England’s war with Napolean. He has become a recluse, avoids people as much as he can, knowing anything can trigger the anxiety attacks that debilitate him. His only solace is the controversial column he writes anonymously for his brother’s newspaper, and the occasional glimpse of his enchanting neighbor, Lilliana.

Lilliana Staplehurst is about to be evicted. Having lost her parents in a horrible accident six months earlier, she knows the man set to inherit will be arriving any day to boot her from her home. The only distraction from her woes is her weekly correspondence with a mystery man who writes for the local newspaper. When he suggests they meet, she jumps at the chance to put the egotistical man in his place.

The two neighbors realize quickly they are destined to be together. Although they accept their feelings for one another and allow their love to grow, soon the memories from Maxwell’s past threaten what should be a happily-ever-after. Lilliana will have to be strong enough for both of them, to help him move beyond the past and embrace their future happiness.

They called it nightmares, they worried they were going insane, and they didn’t have a name for it back then like we do now, PTSD. Max fought in the Napoleonic Wars and came back a changed man where the scars are only on the inside. He’s so afraid his demons will scare off any potential bride yet as an earl he’s beholden to produce an heir. What woman of gentle breeding would have him?

This novella focuses on the growing romance between Lord Max and his next door neighbor, Lily. They’d known each other growing up but the hero is much older than the heroine, a huge expanse of eight years. Doesn’t seem like much these days but back then, it’s an age. What I found charming about this story is the gentle dance of courtship when chaperones were diligent, protocols were strictly enforced and saying what was on your mind was strictly restricted. No lady of good breeding would snort, fish and get muddy, spend time alone with a man or say what’s on her mind. The strictures of the time seem stifling as an over-tight corset to my modern thinking. It amazes me to read about all the little subtle flirtations that women had to use to get their point across. What amazes me even more is when a man actually GETS the hidden message. This convoluted means of communication is hazardous as far as I’m concerned. All one has to do is misinterpret one gesture and hopes are dashed, assumptions are easily made and a crisis is born. That drives me nuts. Good thing Max and Lily ‘think’ alike for most of the story; the crux comes from neither of them knowing it. Only through the courtship does the picture get fully painted.

I’m thinking fans of ‘proper’ historical romances might find this a refreshing read. I don’t believe any modernisms sneaked their way in.

The one thing that jarred for me is when Max earnestly, honestly and forthrightly reveals his biggest secret and fear to Lily. I thought that was rather brave and wonderful of him. Then comes the test – and he failed, spectacularly. I was rather astounded. He laid the perfect groundwork, Lily responded just as a loving wife should and bam! Max totally messed up. He’s a guy, he has his pride and in this case it didn’t do him any favors. Thank goodness nature has a way of making silly men smart again, like a biological reset button. The ending was truly a happy ever after on many levels and was completely satisfying. Lily is truly his perfect match.

All in all, The Earl Next Door is a delightful story about an endearing romance between two people who loved each other all along – first as young kids, then as adults. Those are the best kind because they know each other on a deeper level than two strangers meeting and falling in love. I enjoyed meeting Max and Lily and I thought her Aunt Bea a hoot of a secondary character. This is a nice story to spend time with and I recommend it to other fans of historical romances.

She’s quickly removed as her handler struggles to find a more suitable location to hide her. With six more months until the trial, they have to find a way to keep her safe or they can forget about locking Jinx up any longer. Agent Noah Constance, he is the fixer who the FBI calls in on special assignments when the risks are great…and Amaris’ teenage crush. Under the circumstances it doesn’t seem safe for them to pick up where they left off, but can they really resist what drew them together to begin with?

Amaris and Jinx have had a thing for each other for a long time. This is a modern, shifter version of the hero coming to the rescue of the heroine.

Amaris is a very beautiful woman but she didn’t get to this point in her life by depending on her beauty–she worked hard to get what she wanted. I liked that.

However, she was at the wrong place at the wrong time and witnessed the death of someone important. This criminal will do everything he can to make sure that Amaris never gives her statement in court. Scary!

Jinx, her former crush and her best friend’s brother, becomes her protector. I liked how he was so strong. I liked how the author built the attraction between these two. I felt the passion and hoped it would increase. I wasn’t let down. Amaris knows that he feels something for her but there’s his past–he needs to get over that before they can have a real relationship. It’s a serious cliff-hanger! Will they or won’t they? Amaris and Jinx have a hot and sizzling chemistry and reading about them is very good. It’s an intoxicating read.

I have to admit, this book is a cliff-hanger story and while I’m not fond of them, this story will appeal to many readers. The story allowed me to understand the characters and see the passion, but also see the bonds start to form. Its a good short read and I’m glad I read it. What would make this a fantastic read would be to have the entire story and all of the details. I read it in one sitting and loved it. If you want the first the series to try out this author, then this book is a good place to start.

After 27 years as a newspaper man, Peter Anderson’s career is slipping away, at least it was, until he stumbled upon the story of a lifetime. Sent to do a fluff piece about lights in the night sky over Arizona, he discovers far more than he ever expected when he comes upon a mysterious young woman held prisoner in a basement. After helping her to escape, she disappears before he can learn the truth about who she is or where she came from. His search for her leads him back to the lights in the sky and leaves him with more questions than answers. The only thing he knows for certain . . . the only thing he can count on are the two words offered repeatedly by his friend and guide . . . “IS BELT.”

Enjoy an exclusive excerpt:

Her scream filled the air, sending chills up my spine, as the table disintegrated under Bob’s weight.

My mind raced as I tried to decide what to do. I was looking for a spot to jump in between the two titans.

Suddenly, Fred reappeared from nowhere, lunging headlong, throwing himself at Carl with no self-regard. He was a lunatic, screaming, punching, scratching, biting all at the same time.

Carl brushed him away, striving to reach the woman scrambling on the floor, trying to get up.

No time like now. I jumped on his back, riding him like a child on his father’s back.

Somehow, she was free of the table but still impaled. She grabbed the spike in her left hand, pulling at it. Her skin stretched with the effort, clinging to the metal. Finally succeeding, she clutched it like a dagger. Getting to her feet, she lunged for Carl.

With shocking swiftness, she plunged the spike into his chest.

It was Carl’s turn to scream and he did… a howling snarl of a growl that curled my toes.

“You should have killed me when you had the chance,” the woman said through clenched teeth, trying to force the spike deeper with her weight.

“Fucking bitch,” Carl shouted, backhanding her, sending her to the floor again.

He seized the spike, yanking it from his body, throwing it at her; the woman, having gotten to her feet, removed the second nail and braced for another assault on Carl, her hands bleeding freely.

About the Author:

I was raised pretty much the same as everyone else… devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends I could conjure. Not that I wasn’t friendly, I just wasn’t “people orientated”. Maybe I lived in my head way more than I should have, maybe not. I liked machines more than people, at least I did until I met my wife.

The first thing I can remember writing was for her. For the life of me I can’t remember what it was about… something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married me shortly after that. I spent a good number of years after inventing games and prototypes for a variety of ideas before I got back to writing.

It wasn’t a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. My wife and I had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. “Be as detailed as you can,” we were told.

I was thrilled. If there is one thing I enjoy it’s making people believe me and I like to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mine you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn’t be sure if it were true or not. When I write, I always write with the effort of “it could happen” very much in mind and nothing, I guarantee you, nothing, makes me happier.

The world building was extremely well done. I was especially impressed with how the narrator explained the bigger picture of where these characters live and why their world is organized the way it is. There were so many different layers to it that this adventure could have easily been expanded into something full-length. While it worked perfectly well in the short story form, I’m hoping that the author will consider writing a sequel. I’d love to know what happens to Carter and Rani next.

I would have liked to see more attention paid to how the romance began. The circumstances the characters involved in it were dealing with at the time were difficult. While I definitely wanted these characters to end up together and was pleased with how the rest of their interactions went, I did have a few lingering questions about how it all began that could have easily been answered with the addition of one or two more brief scenes.

The pacing made my heart race. A big part of what made the most intense scenes so unforgettable later on was how much time the author spent building up to them. It was fascinating to see everything come together. As exciting as the beginning was, the plot only became even more interesting as it sprinted towards the conclusion.

I’d heartily recommend Dangerous Territory to fans of romance and science fiction alike. This is a skillful blend of both genres!

Gloria Navarro met and married her soul mate. When he died, she felt she’d never know that kind of love again. But when she finds a love letter between the pages of a book and the man who wrote the missive, she starts to believe lightning might strike twice.

To Bryan Dunn, love is a four-letter word. He doesn’t go in for cheap sentiment or hearts-and-flowers. But he wants Gloria, and to get her, he’ll let her believe he wrote the silly letter. The longer he’s with her, though, the more he cares. If she discovers the truth about him, it just might break the heart he never thought he had.

Gloria has a very guilty secret. While perusing books of poetry at a used book store, she found a letter stashed away. The raw emotion, the clear distress at losing his love dripped on every careful word and seared her soul. Unable to help herself, Gloria had read the missive over and over to the point of having it memorized. Determined to return it – perhaps the letter’s real recipient might still find it – she is about to slip the paper back into the book of sonnets when a handsome man removed the book from the shelf. Bryan is a professor and one hell of a sexy man. He mightn’t be the writer of the letter, but he’s not one to let a small thing like that ruin the potential for such a wonderful relationship.

Initially I found that Bryan comes across as a bit of an anti-hero. He freely admits that his end goal with any woman is to get her into bed, and it’s not traditional hero behavior to start a relationship with a fundamental lie (that of authorship of the letter Gloria showed him). All that said, I genuinely found Bryan to be a complex and interesting character. While I strongly feel many more traditional romance readers might not warm to him – he doesn’t soften much until about half way through the story – I was drawn by his anti-hero characteristics. There are reasons – good and strong ones – as to why he doesn’t believe in happily ever after endings or the strength and bonds created through a good marriage. These layers made him interesting to me and helped me want to find out why he acts as he did and gave me patience to stick with him when some of his thoughts were less than charitable.

In some ways I found this to be a good-girl-turns-bad-boy-good style of story, but that label doesn’t do it justice. Gloria is older than many normal romance heroines (in her forties) and while Bryan is in his mid-thirties and definitely not some virginal young man, there is that age difference there. But it’s Gloria who in many ways is the innocent. She’s known real love – her dead husband was her soul mate in so many ways and Gloria still views the world through rose coloured glasses. Bryan might have some baggage and not really believe in love, but his feelings for Gloria grow deep and genuine. And I found this a very satisfying story to read and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Bryan twist and turn as he found himself emotionally and romantically growing and changing.

While this wasn’t the most realistic of stories, that normally doesn’t bother me too much. As long as the plotline isn’t outrageous I love reading for the escape. Readers who like their plots more logical and real might find some of the changes Bryan makes difficult to swallow, and other readers might not be able to see past his initial deceptions. The sex scene is sizzling hot and explicit, but there’s no kink or anything I found over the top. Readers who don’t like “bedroom door left open” style scenes might want to skip those parts, but personally I found the scene tastefully written and not added in merely for the sake of having sex. It fit the characters, situation and progression of the story very well to my mind.

I found this a sweet, wonderfully heartwarming story with vibrant characters and complexities in Bryan particularly that I found deeply satisfying to read. I really enjoyed both Gloria and Bryan’s characters and found their proverbial rocky path interesting and romantic. A great book I’ll happily read again.

He knows deep in his heart that her presence in his mountains heralds his release from purgatory.

Get ready for a romance story that will give you goose bumps in the best possible way. Don’t let the lower page count fool you because within the pages of Dinner with a Highland Ghost is one of the most complete, heartfelt, romantic and beautiful stories I’ve read in a while. I was left with joyful sniffles in the end because I was feeling that powerfully happy. And it’s the ending that gave me the goosebumps. It was the perfect wrap-up.

Ms. Barrett needs to be given a lot of credit for writing a story using a plot technique that’s been used before, but never like this. At least I have never seen it done in this manner. It made sense; it was magical, mystical and wonderfully loving and special.

John is a very lonely Highland ghost. No one to talk to for three hundred years, he’s so sad and alone that he’s tried to die many times over that span of time. The problem is, he’s already dead, how much more dead can a dead guy get? That’s why I rooted for the hero; I wanted to save him.

It was up to the heroine from America, Emma, to be the first one, the only one, to ever see him and speak to him. Not only that but she could TOUCH him. Can you imagine the sheer overwhelming volume of feelings that can overcome a man when not only a woman can see and talk to him, but a beautiful one at that? John went into sensual overload but it turns out that Emma was with him all the way. Her life was in a tailspin and what she found in those hours and days with John was more than anything she ever dreamed of and certainly never got from all the men she had had in her life. They both grabbed onto the experience of being with one another with both arms and legs wrapped tight. Emma and John both needed that physical connection for different reasons but what they discovered in each other’s arms was pure magic.

The problem with being a ghost is, when your time comes, it comes and sometimes even love can’t ground you. That’s when my emotions were completely engaged and I truly felt Emma’s pain and loss. But, she found strength too and in embracing the gift of time she’d been given with John, she moved on with her life. In doing so she made an incredible discovery. It blew my socks off and it’s the reason why I commend Ms. Barrett for her clever writing and exceptional craftsmanship because she presented a reader with a wonderful, believable premise for bringing the lovers together again. It was a welcomed surprise and it made my day. It’s the best happy ever after ever!

Dinner with a Highland Ghost is a true gem, a romantic marvel that engages the senses and delivers a full bodied romance that is sure to please. I’m thrilled that I can put this book on my keeper shelf. When I need a quick dose of satisfying ‘happy’, I’ll know exactly which book to pick up:  Dinner with a Highland Ghost. It’s that good.

Being the wood craftsman and the creator of Unique Toys didn’t help matters. He was the go to guy for crafted toys around the holidays and while everyone else were enjoying the season. He worked up till Christmas Eve to fill orders.

But maybe this year would be different with his new shop helper, Tia Davis. With skin like cappuccino and a silver streak in her hair, she came in to the shop each morning with a cup of hot chocolate and a smile just for him. Danny felt his attraction grow with each passing day and vowed to make Tia his naughty little elf. Especially after their first kiss, he saw another side of Tia that wasn’t just cheerful. She was wickedly arousing — and damn if he didn’t want more.

Few people have any idea what their coworkers do when they’re not at work, but Tia and Danny might just find out the answer to this question.

The chemistry between the two main characters was sizzling hot. What I adored the most about their interactions was how much history there already was between them. The fact that they’d known each other for so long before the events of this tale began meant that there weren’t any awkward moments of introduction. They already knew so much about each other as friends that the transition to something that might be more than that was a silky smooth one.

There was one subplot that I would have liked to see more attention paid to understanding it. It involves Tia’s mother and so much time was spent building up to what it might be that I was surprised by how it was handled once it was finally discussed. The subject matter of this subplot was interesting both on its own, as well as what it showed me about the characters who were involved in it. All it needed was more time to develop and a sense of closure.

Both of the main characters in this tale had fascinating backstories. While I can’t say anything about them without giving away spoilers, of course, but I really liked getting to know both Danny and Tia as complicated, nuanced individuals. It made me wish even harder that they’d find their happy ending than I might have otherwise.

Silver Bells made me smile. I’d recommend it to anyone who is in the mood for something romantic.

Set during the Bronze Age, The Wolf Queen is a fantasy romance with a heavy dose of the paranormal. Ms Heckart cleverly weaves in a lot of background history throughout the tale.

Alara is a princess from a foreign land, soon to be wed to a sorcerer king. However, she realizes that her betrothed knows a big secret about her tribe that he plans to use for his evil purposes. So she flees to the one person who can help her, Lycaon. A former king, he’s cursed to roam the earth in his half human, half wolf form.

Alara has a kind heart and a strong will but she’s also a strong fighter. She knows herself. And she knows when to retreat and when to fight.

With every day she spent with Lycaon she learns more and more about him and about the secrets long hidden. This was a surprising book. Honestly I wasn’t sure I’d like it this much, let alone finish it in one sitting.

Though this is the second book in the series and even though I haven’t read the first book in the series, I can safely say that it can be read as a stand alone. The plot was very good. Detailed. But not so much so as to be too much. It was descriptive and deep.

The characters, good and bad, were well developed. I could almost see them in my mind’s eye every time.

Alara and Lycaon had passion and a lot of it. Their relationship was not easy but their love was strong. I know it’s a little corny saying that but it’s the only way I could describe it without revealing too much.

A read any paranormal reader could love and one I highly recommend.

If I had to sum up The 8th Circle in one word, that would be gritty. There’s lots of violence and people start dying in sometimes gruesome ways, as the plot continues.

The storyline grabbed me from the opening chapter, especially when the main character’s friend drives his car into his pond and is the victim of an obvious shooting. Speaking of the main character, that’s Danny Ryan, who is likeable from page one. You feel for his pain and you’re cheering him along as they story takes more twists and turns. Did his friend drive to his house to give him something, are the deaths of Danny’s wife and child somehow connected to what’s currently happening in Danny’s suddenly nightmarish world?

One thing I liked most about this story was the natural sounding dialogue. So what didn’t I like about it? There wasn’t much but sometimes the story jumped to another chapter and another character’s viewpoint, one we hadn’t been introduced to before and it somehow seemed jarring, at least it did for me. Also, it wasn’t until later in the story that a character that we had been introduced to suddenly got a voice in this story which also seemed somewhat jarring to me.

There is a huge cast of characters in this story and not all of them very nice people. Even some you thought were okay, turned out to be not so nice people who would do anything to save their own skin. This story will certainly have you turning the pages, trying to figure out who’s behind every misfortune and death that seems to be befalling Danny.

I’d recommend this if enjoy your mysteries on the gritty side.

Welcome to Brighton in 1988 and the University of Sussex, where kids sport Mohawks and light up to the otherworldly sounds of the Cocteau Twins, as conversation drifts from structuralism to Thatcher to the bloody Labour Students. Meet David Heller, an American studying abroad who’s left the States to escape his own family still mourning the death of a daughter ten years later. To extend his stay, David has taken a job nursing Hans Bromwell. The son of a former MP, and playboy in his day, Hans was left paralyzed by a mysterious accident. When David moves into the Bromwell house, his life becomes quickly entwined with those of Hans, his alcoholic sister Elizabeth, and her beautiful fatherless daughter, as they navigate their new role as fallen aristocracy. As David befriends the Bromwells, the details behind the family’s staggering fall from grace are exposed: How Elizabeth’s love affair with a Portuguese physician carried the young English girl right into the bloody battlefields of colonial Africa, where an entire continent bellowed for independence, and a single event left a family broken forever.

David has quite enjoyed his year studying abroad in England. More than soaking up the culture and experiencing the world, he’s fallen in love. So, what’s a smitten young man to do when it’s time to return home and leave his dream girl behind? Find a way to stay, of course. Enter Hans Bromwell, the son of a wealthy family paralyzed in a freak accident. In order to stay in England, David agrees to care for Hans and winds up getting more out of the experience than he ever dreamed possible.

No. 4 Imperial Lane wasn’t anything like I expected it to be. It began like any ordinary novel, telling of David’s adventures in Sussex after arriving from the United States for a year abroad. You get to know him a bit and follow his life as he meets and eventually falls in love with Maggie. In a last ditch effort to stay in England and continue his love affair with Maggie, David takes on a job caring for the paralyzed Hans. This is where the novel deviated from the norm and delved into the new and interesting for me.

While caring for Hans, David becomes friendly with his employer’s sister, Elizabeth. Although at first, he only listens out of politeness and to ease the boredom he’s experiencing, before long, David is as engrossed in Elizabeth’s story as the rest of us are. Listening to her tell her tale of adventure and excitement between meeting the love of her life in Portugal and how she wound up in a Portuguese colony in Africa, I not only got to experience a good story, but I also learned something I had forgotten about world history. Even more interesting is watching David move from an uninterested outsider to part of the family, going so far as to befriend Hans and become more than just a disinterested caretaker.

Beautifully written and engaging, No. 4 Imperial Lane is one of the most unique novels I’ve read this year. I loved the weaving of the past into the present and the way the author managed to bring them together into the future. With exotic locations and interesting characters, I was sucked in and held tight all the way until the very end.
