Erica Donato, Brooklyn girl, urban history grad student and single mom, is researching the 1930s when Brownsville was the home of the notorious organized criminals the newspapers called Murder Inc. She quickly learns that even in rapidly changing Brooklyn, Brownsville remains much as it was. It is still poor, it is still tough, and it still breeds fighters and gangs. Doing field research, Erica stops in at the landmark local library and meets Savanna, a young woman who is the pride of her mother and her bosses, and headed for an elite college and a future. A few days later, Savanna is found beaten and left for dead. Her anguished mother is everywhere, insisting someone knows something. After a massive, angry demonstration, a young girlfriend of Savanna s is found dead, too. Is there a connection? Did perfect Savanna have a few secrets? Erica s curious. But she s focused on the 1930s and has located a few women who are happy to share memories. Two are childhood friends who disagree on much but guard secrets, too ones kept for a lifetime. She’s doing a thesis on Brooklyn in the past. That involves looking into the people who were around then and their activities. When she finds an old file with photographs that depict life at that time, she starts trying to identify them.

The author has a good knowledge of Brooklyn. She talks about the past and the buildings that are gone as well as about the ones that still stand. She adds in the criminal element that is still present today. When she adds in a murder, too, it starts to get even more interesting.

Inner city gangs are still around. In earlier days they were different nationalities but the crime and fear squads have always been there. When Erica goes to the local library to do research, four black boys harass her. Luckily, the museum guard comes to her rescue.

Even when they know who attacked a young black girl, nothing can be done. They have solid alibis even if they are lies. Life starts to get dangerous in the ‘hood. When the next girl shows up dead, the case ramps up. While Erica is concerned about the girls, she also dealing with two oldsters who lived in the neighborhood in the time period she’s researching. One of them asks her to find out what happened to her brother. The two ladies are good friends but they fight as much as they get along.

This is a good look at what things are like in the poorer sections of town. Nowadays it happens in the heart of the city as well. Everyone is searching for power, money, and more. The story is good, the motives are mixed and the killer was a surprise. This isn’t any happily ever after but it is life. I’d read another in this series.

It might be love. If they don’t kill each other first.

Siberian tiger-shifter Dominec Giroux doesn’t play well with others. Horribly scarred by the Organization scientists who killed his family and tried to turn him into their pet assassin, his sanity has been hanging by a thread ever since his escape.

His one reason for living—revenge. But when he snaps during one of the shifters’ strikes against the Organization and goes on a killing spree, it doesn’t go over so well with his pride mates.

The last thing she needs to deal with is Dominec’s brand of crazy, but until she can get him under control, she’s his babysitter.

It would take a miracle for these two to find common ground, but when they’re sent on a mission that could impact the future of every shifter in the world, lioness and tiger form an uneasy alliance…and unleash an attraction that could be their salvation. If it doesn’t destroy them both.

A Siberian tiger shifter and a lion shifter make for one heck of a cat fight.

Dominec has gone through hell and back and the only reason he’s alive is revenge. Revenge for what he has lost. He’s determined to take revenge on the organization who has stolen his his family, gave him scars both mentally and physically.

After his escape from the organization that took so much from him, he became a member of the Lone Pine Pride for one reason, revenge. That’s what he wanted, planned for. Thanks to some volatile anger issues, he’s stuck with a babysitter. Grace is no Mary Poppins, but she’s the only female lieutenant of the pride. At first, I thought he’d hate her but, what he starts to feel more for his ‘babysitter’ isn’t anywhere near child’s play.

Dominec and Grace, well, their relationship from the start has been off the charts rocky. Grace, a lioness, is a feisty fighter but also someone who is, unofficially, the person that everyone comes to unload their stress and all. This made her an endearing character because she didn’t act like she had to be tough all the time.

Somehow Dominec trusts and cares about Grace. What I loved about their relationship was he understood Grace when her family had difficulty understanding her. He knew that she was perfectly capable of taking care of herself and did not try to smother her with over-protectiveness though he would follow her around everywhere he could and only interfere when he’s positive she needs helps.

They had understanding as well as burn-your-clothes kind of passion. According to Grace, Dominec is unpredictable and according to Dominec, Grace is a pain in his tail, but a pain he’s willing to protect if she needed that.

Descriptive, with a plot about a nightmare organization and the shifters fighting to protect themselves. The plot unfolds with each page read and ensnared me to the end. Reader’s who like a strong female lead and man who’s strong enough to follow, should give this one a try.

Josh McClintock is a hard worker, helping his father on their family ranch. But by night he parties hard. The consummate playboy, it would be hard to truly dislike Josh and to his credit he is attracted to Nettie, he just didn’t plan to marry her. Actually, his plans didn’t extend past the next willing bed partner. There was some real humor in the situation that forces Josh and Nettie to wed. That was nice because the author could have taken it into a different direction when Nettie’s dad walks in demanding answers.

This is a historical novel where the setting, language and colorful descriptions felt very accurate. It was easy to picture the story as it played out. The story is simple, not overly complicated. What really makes this story special are the characters. They were easy to cheer for and it was nice to see them end with a HEA despite the rocky start. The writing and the plot are good. But the story highlights the characters, at their best and their worst.

McClintock’s Reluctant Bride shows how family and love can come into your life in different ways. It has humor, heart and just enough heat to satisfy readers who enjoy a good western historical romance that begins with a shotgun wedding. Worth the read.

One hundred years ago a deadly super-virus infected humanity, killing off the world’s male population. Women have ruled alone ever since. When a cure is finally discovered, man was born again, and women began gradually reintroducing the boys back into society. But not all women were happy about that. A secret cult called the Sicarii wanted men to remain extinct.

Nancy Rose is a US federal agent under the powerful Department of Safety (an institution that insists everyone conform to their safety rules, or else). Nancy and her fellow agents are specially charged with protecting men from the murderous Sicarii.

After Nancy receives a tip that leads to a party of man-killers, she is set on a path to confront one of the formidable Queens of the Sicarii, the so-called Queen of Spades. Nancy will need to shoot from the hip, aim straight, watch her back, and keep her own secrets from being uncovered if she wants to track down and stop the Queens of the Sicarii.

It isn’t easy to track down an organization that has only ever existed in the shadows, much less figure out who is leading it. Nancy definitely has her work cut out for her. Only time will tell if she’s smart enough to piece together all of the clues in time.

Wow, what an action-packed storyline! I ended up taking a handful of short breaks from reading this novel because of how rapidly certain scenes made my heart beat. The tension was so strong that I simultaneously wanted a chance to catch my breath and couldn’t bear to go another moment without finding out what would happen next. It was simply that suspenseful in a good way.

I would have liked to see much more time spent developing the characters’ personalities. While I can easily imagine exactly what they all looked like, it would be much harder for me to say what it would be like to have a conversation with them. The narrator never showed me if the characters were outgoing, cheerful, irritable, kind, or any number of other personality traits. Not having this information made it harder for me to relate to Nancy in particular as not knowing these basic facts about her made it difficult for me to predict how she’d react to a stressful situation.

One of the most interesting things about reading books set in the future is discovering what traditions and social mores from our world an author thinks will still be practiced generations from now. Finding these connections between our contemporary life and a futuristic society is my one of my favorite parts of reading this kind of science fiction. Luckily there were many of these connections to discover in this tale. Some of them revealed themselves right away, while others took a little more effort. All of them were absolutely fascinating for reasons I can’t share here without giving away spoilers.

After the Queens of the Sicarii should be read by anyone who enjoys dystopian science fiction.

However, an assault on Hannah and a terrible loss make her question her behavior and send her running back to her roots to find the answers.

Hannah is an Amish widow who falls for her sexy Dom next door.

This was a surprise since I’d never though of an Amish and a Dom. That scenario was a little difficult to imagine but thanks to the author, I could safely say that this was a great book.

When Hannah moves into the city, she had to learn some of the simple things like driving a car and navigating the bustling city. She also has to get used the number of changes that came with it. Her willingness to try is one of the things that made her endearing as a character.

Mitch is a very good with his hands and he promised his neighbors that he would keep an eye on their niece when she came to house sit for them. Somehow keeping an eye changed to keeping a hand and everything else on her, too. Mitch feels an instant lust for her and vice-versa, however with the amount of time they spend with each other, it became obvious very quickly that there was the chance for more.

Mitch is a Dom and Hannah’s only relationship was her husband. Sounds like a potential for trouble. She was completely innocent to Mitch’s ways, but she didn’t give up. Her determination is awesome. Neither character let up and that was great to read.

The characters were interesting and detailed. They had fantastic chemistry that steamed off the pages. Their story isn’t long but it was satisfying and an easy recommend.

His old gang’s leader and his friends don’t understand why he wants to distance himself from them. Riley just wants him. Too bad her dad’s dead set against Hanzi and keeps asking him to do some pretty shady favors. Is he trying to trick Hanzi back into his criminal life or just take advantage of his skills? Then his old friends come after him, and being a good man starts to seem like more trouble that it’s worth, especially if it won’t help him protect Riley.

An ex-con falls for an innocent young college student. He wants out of the con business but her daddy has other ideas.

Hanzi has, over the years, become the main go-to guy for a vicious gang but he really wants nothing to do with the gang anymore and is willing to completely to turn his life around for good. However, one look at Riley, and he wants her. What he didn’t know, or maybe didn’t want to know, was how important she would become for him.

Hanzi is a guy with an ego. That was my first impression within the first couple of pages. But he also loves his elder sister a lot. Hanzi is two sides of conflicted coin. He has a sweet side and a hard one, which Riley comes to know extremely well.

Riley on the other hand is simply a sweet girl with a father who is probably as dangerous as any criminal Hanzi has dealt with, seeing as he may be doing some illegal stuff. Riley, though she loves her father, would rather stay as far away from him as possible. When Riley first sees Hanzi, her womanly parts wake up. I’m not sure it’s love at first sight or lust at first sight but, in the end they do fall in love.

This was an up and down book. Meaning there were parts that was interesting while other parts that totally put me off. Like he is sweet and caring towards her at times and then he intentionally or unintentionally hurts her. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I can owe that to the fact that Hanzi has always had one night stands, not real girlfriends.

I do think Hanzi could have been characterized a little bit better. He needed a little more depth to be true hero material. Otherwise it has a good plot and flows well. Ms. Fallen is a very descriptive writer and helped bring the story to life.

Readers who like bad-boy redemption stories should give this one a try.

Now scarred inside and out, Gabriel discovers a kindred spirit in Ariah—and feelings he imagined lost forever reawaken as he observes her strength in the face of adversity. But when Ariah’s own lethal secrets unfold, their new love is threatened by ancient ghosts. Can Gabriel and Ariah find hope in the wreckage of their pasts—or will the cycle of history repeat again?

There’s a reason for everything and sometimes the most important battle we fight is one that allows us to forgive ourselves.

Finding Gabriel is historical romance about a wounded hero and the heroine who teaches him how to be brave off the battlefield. Together, they learn to live again and reasons to love again. It’s a beautiful and poignant story of healing the wounds that can be seen and the deeper, potentially more fatal wounds that can’t be seen, This is a smoothly written novel that took me back in time to live each and every scene in detail.

Gabriel is a commander, a soldier who have fought wars and came home when others of his squad didn’t. War is never easy on anyone but especially for those on the front line. What made this book more personal, more real is that Gabriel is fighting an internal war that is every bit as harsh and painful as what he sees on the battlefield. PTSD is more in the forefront of national news today but it isn’t a new condition since wars have been fought since the beginning of time. Gabriel’s a hero who doesn’t want the notoriety, he welcomes and even pursues death. When death alludes him on the battlefield he takes matters into his own hands. Fate has other plans and sends him an angel in the form of widower and single mother, Ariah.

Ariah is the wife of a soldier who has not answered his letters in months. She fears the worst. When she finds a floating almost dead body of Gabriel in the River Seine. She cannot find in her self to let him die. Ariah was an easy heroine to cheer for. She’s not had an easy life, she wasn’t a part of the French aristocracy, she’s a commoner who was dealt a bad home life and chose to make a better life for herself and her daughter.

When I originally chose this book, I first noticed the page count and thought It would take me at least a couple of days, if not longer, to finish it. I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading straight through. The story flows seamlessly and the emotions, especially for Gabriel, are just so raw. The romance builds slowly between Gabriel and Ariah but the timing is perfect.

This book is a must read for those who want to experience a man taken to his lowest possible point and then the glory of healing love. This is one of those stories that you still feel even after the last page. Pick up a copy and be prepared to immersed into beautiful world building and characters who steal your heart.

But then Simon becomes a regular, a bright spot more interesting than the inside of Beckett’s head, and daydreams start to seem like they could be something far more tangible—if reality doesn’t get in the way first.

Beckett has been working for years as a barista at The Percolation Station and was astonished his path had never crossed with sexy regular, Simon. As their ten o’clock meetings became somewhat regular, Beckett couldn’t help but become infatuated. Their conversations were so easy, but Simon wasn’t single and so Beckett kept their conversations light and carefree. Then suddenly, Simon was available, and Beckett was determined to turn his daydreams into reality.

This is a wonderful, steamy romance story of two men finding each other and sharing their passions. Beckett is about to studying post-graduate work in environmental courses, and Simon is passionate about his writing, but very eco-conscious too. The chemistry between the two men is intense and wonderful to read. While I felt their story was a little rushed, the shortness of the story could indicate the author didn’t have much space to slow the pace down. I really wish we’d been given more depth to some of the scenes – like the laptop poetry scene and the final family scene in particular. As a reader I felt a little shortchanged that two such important, passionate scenes had the feeling of being rushed and almost glossed over. Those two scenes were pivotal in Simon and Beckett’s relationships and even after rereading them I was left with many questions – like how the men reacted and felt emotionally from such important discoveries. I was a little frustrated that more time and words weren’t spent on them, even if other scenes would have been cut shorter to ensure that.

I really enjoyed the relationship growing between Beckett and Simon, I was pleased they seemed to fit together so well and found the sex between them both steamy and enticing. The bedroom door was certainly left open, but I didn’t feel anything too daring was described in detail. Readers who enjoy M/M romance and don’t mind a bit of spice in their story should be as satisfied as I was.

Aside from wishing a few of the scenes had been longer and better fleshed out, I found this to be an emotional, romantic story. I enjoyed the intimacy between the two men and appreciated the pacing of their growing relationship. This is a lovely book and one I have enjoyed.

The main character, Gracy is a midwife in a Colorado town during the gold mining days. Her voice pulls you into the story and you like her straight away. She seems kind and sweet so when she’s suddenly accused of killing a baby, you’re put on edge and want to start reading more chapters.

It’s not just Gracy who’s a great character in this story, but just about everyone she comes in contact with. Each one seemed to jump off the page and I liked the way the author gave them all some sort of secret to keep hidden.

The author did a wonderful job portraying the town and how people actually lived and sometimes suffered through this period of history. You get a feel for what women went through during pregnancy and childbirth and just how tough the female of the family had to be to survive.

I felt like this book not only offered me a wonderful read but also a well told history lesson rolled in there too. The pacing was perfect and I found myself spending more time reading each time I picked up this book. This was the first time I’d read anything by this author and now I’ll be looking for more titles written by her.

Ms. Dallas has set the bar high for my New Year reading and I hope the next book I read is just as enjoyable. It’s one I suggest you add to your winter reading list.
